Update on Heritage Minerals Mount Morgan Gold Project

The innovative drilling uses a small percussive drilling rig that recently completed the deepest hole ever drilled for this type of drilling rig. The crew are all long time Mount Morgan mates that have never previously worked in the drilling

weeks, however, before the project can be given the goahead, several permits need to be updated and approved by State Government agencies including the Environmental Authority. This permit specifies water quality, dust, noise, and vibration limits from the mining operation. It is expected that removing contaminant tailings from the mine site drainages will result in an overall improvement in Dee River water quality. Areas on the mine site impacted by the tailings reprocessing project will be rehabilitated to comply with conditions regulated by the Environmental Authority.

industry but have now become proficient at their tasks. Results from the drilling program will be incorporated into Heritage Minerals feasibility study for reprocessing the tailings to recover gold and copper. Although the tailings have been drilled in the past, additional information is required because of the innovative processing

technique Heritage Minerals are planning. Gold and copper will be extracted from the tailings using a resin-based technology. This will make the metal recovery process more efficient and cost effective than traditional processing techniques. The feasibility study should be completed in the next several

When the project is in operation, over 80 jobs will be created and there will be an emphasis on local employment. Although previous plans to reprocess the tailings by several companies have not eventuated, Heritage Minerals is optimistic that the project will proceed. However, the technical studies, permitting and finance raising needs to be completed before there is a commitment to develop. ROTARY NEWS

The Rotary Club of Mount Morgan requires more members to enable us to continue as our community’s club. Would you like to be a member of a Rotary Club which gives you opportunities to assist your community, your country and help communities world wide? Our Club in Mount Morgan has been working for 64 years providing assistance in our community and world wide with humanitarian issues. Some of our members have travelled overseas to countries such as Cambodia fitting artificial hands to people who have been injured by land mines or in accidents. Members have assisted with hospital upgrades in the Solomon Islands. There are many other opportunities such as providing water tanks or wells to communities who previously had to carry water many kilometres to their communities. Recently in our community we have been able to provide ramp and parking access to a home to allow the occupant, who had serious mobility problems , to leave his home and allows the ambulance to park to get him to hospital and doctors appointments. Another project was to provide a shelter over a seat at the hospital where people waited for transport home. Many other projects have been completed since the Club first began and are documented in a booklet printed to celebrate the Clubs 60th anniversary. Our Club also supports our local schools awards nights and other youth programs such as National youth Science and Driver Awareness. We are really appreciative of the support given by our community buying our 100 club tickets and tickets for special days such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day Christmas and Easter. This money allows us to finance our projects. If you think you would like to be part of this world wide service club please contact us via our email rotarymountmorgan@gmail.com, a club member if you see them selling tickets or if you know them or by calling 0418186124. FESTIVAL NEWS Announcement from Golden Committee 15 January, 2021

Mount

Festival

Your new Golden Mount Festival Committee was elected in late 2020 and set about deciding what a festival in 2021 would look like. Initially, it seemed Page 4

like 2021 it was a possibility. The committee had to undertake an analysis for a Covid safe event plan. As the festival attracts crowds in excess of 1500 spread over multiple days and sites under the Covid Event Safe planning requirements there are significant restrictions and requirements. As a result of the complexities this presents sadly, we have made the decision we will be postponing the Golden Mount Festival in May. You can rest assured it was a decision none of the committee found any joy in. It was the last outcome we wanted. In planning an event under the Covid Safe Event plan there are many restrictions placed on organisers and the crowds attending which meant huge changes to the structure of the whole weekend. We know this decision will cause much upset but we are as bitterly disappointed as you are; the decision was not taken lightly. As much as we tried all alternatives we came up with meant it wouldn’t be the event we all know and love. We love catching up with our mates, we love embracing old friends and relatives and welcoming people from all over the State, nation and world! We love jostling in the crowd, watching the parade, wandering the markets freely and let’s not forget the signature event cheering on the Running the Cutter! After the recent three day lockdown in Brisbane, we decided to make our announcement early so as not to inconvenience people making travel and holiday plans. Whilst, it is very disappointing, we find it is our most prudent course of action to minimize risk to our community and wasting resources. On the up side however, the committee has a number of smaller events in the planning stages for throughout 2021 for the community so watch this space. These events which we can plan under smaller category Covid Safe event plans will enable us to forward plan and fundraise for what we hope will be a mighty comeback festival in 2022! Our next meeting is on 10 February, 6pm at the Soldiers’ Rooms. You can become a full member of the Festival or join as a Friend of the Festival. For further information see our Facebook page Golden Mount Festival or touch base with a committee member. RODEO NEWS Mount Morgan’s intrepid Rodeo Association is busy planning for the 2021 May Day weekend Rodeo to be held on Sunday, 2 May. With the September held Junior Rodeo and the full rodeo held at the end of November, the Rodeo Association have the Covid-19 requirements in hand and have made necessary changes to the layout of the venue to ensure social distancing is observed. One such change is moving the arena over closer to the bar area where the landscape provides a natural amiptheatre. In December, the Association held a Christmas/ Thank you lunch for the helpers of the rodeo. All supporters and workers were presented with a gift for their contributions. The Association also presented a cheque to the Mount Morgan State High School for the students’ help with the rodeos in 2020. MOUNT MORGAN JUNIOR BOWLERS COMPETE IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

North Toowoomba Bowls Club for the second successive year held the State Junior Bowls Championships. It was an opportunity for junior lawn bowlers from all over Queensland to compete against each other in under 15 and under 18 age groups in singles, pairs, triples and fours competition. Mount Morgan junior bowlers Eddie and Isaac Evers made the trip south to fly the flag for Central Queensland. Eddie (14) and Isaac (12) are members of the Wowan Bowls Club, but regularly play at Welfare Bowls Club.

the boys formed a team with an under 18 player from Helensvale. Again, the draw was tough with the team coming up against the newly crowned under 15 pairs champions and a singles finalist from 2020. The team played some excellent bowls but they were eliminated due to their opponents superior ability to draw on the day. In the singles, in what was called “typical Toowoomba weather”, Isaac fought gallantly but was unable to come up with a win, going down in his three games 2110, 21-13, and 21-9. Eddie had more success winning

two of his games 21-6 and 21-9 but was stopped from advancing to the finals series by the eventual runner-up. Both boys had a great experience and bowled very well overall. They came away from the tournament with great confidence that they can match their skills on the green with the best players in Queensland. Above left: Eddie during the competition and above the Evers brothers.

They are coached by David Hatfield of Diggers Bowls Club in Rockhampton. The boys weren’t required until day two of competition with the pairs. Eddie & Isaac had a very tough draw with the 2020 defending champions and semi-finalists in their section. Despite some excellent bowls and an absence of luck, the boys were defeated in their three games 4210, 21-13, and 22-12. Day four was the open triples and 3 - 17 February 2021

BRIDGE WORKS COMPLETE happy with the outcome,” Cr Williams said. “The recently completed upgrade is great news for students of Mount Morgan who can once again use the bridge on their way to and from school. “The team at Hutchinson Builders did a fantastic job replacing the old timber decking as well as carrying out inspections and refurbishment to areas that needed attention. “Thanks to these upgrades the bridge is now in tip top condition.” Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford can’t wait for the community to get plenty of use out of the newly refurbished bridge. “The works started in October last year and finished in January,” Cr Rutherford said.

Mount Morgan’s iconic replica swinging bridge is now back open to the public following some major upgrades. Infrastructure Councillor Tony Williams was pleased to see the upgrades completed in time for the new school year. “The bridges are very special to the Mount Morgan community and I am sure they will be extremely

“We know how central the bridge is to the community so we opened it up over the Christmas holiday period and then closed it off again to finish the upgrades in the new year. “The bridge is now open for good and will hopefully be open for many years to come.” “I want to say a special thank you to the Mount Morgan community for their patience while these works were undertaken, we know how valuable the bridge is to the community and hope you are just as happy with the outcome as we are!” Pictured: Cr Cherie Rutherford and Tony Williams.

TRANSFER STATION HOURS REMINDER

Rockhampton Regional Council is reminding residents that new hours at the Gracemere and Mount Morgan Waste Transfer Stations began on Monday, 1 February.

Waste and Waste to Resource Implementation Councillor Shane Latcham said the decision to move to new hours balanced customer demand with operational efficiencies. “We’ve been handing out flyers notifying customers of the change at both Waste Transfer Stations for the last couple of months,” Cr Latcham said. “I’ve been told that the majority of customers coming through have Page 8

been understanding about the changes, so I really wanted to say thank you to these communities.

“I also wanted to say thank you to those who have raised concerns about the new operating times. We will be reviewing the operational hours within the next 12 months, and community feedback will play a big part in that. “In making the decision to move to new hours a lot of consideration was given to when our Waste Transfer Stations are at their quietest and we made reductions at those quiet times. “Decisions like this aren’t easy. It can be a bit of a balancing act to make sure we’re providing the MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

best level of service at the most efficient return to ratepayers. “Going off customer attendance fluctuations, however, we believe that the majority of community members shouldn’t be impacted by these changes, yet we will see some real cost savings. “We will also be exploring the feasibility of other solutions for our Waste Transfer Stations in the future to ensure the best service for our communities.” Division 4 Councillor Ellen Smith said the new hours would continue to see 7-day a week service at the Gracemere WTS. Continued on Page 9 3 - 17 February 2021

Waste Transfer from Page 8 “The operating times aren’t being trimmed too much, and customer attendance reviews tell us that the hours we are trimming are normally very quiet, so most residents shouldn’t be impacted,” Cr Smith said. Division 5 Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the Mount Morgan community would also see the changes come into effect. “We know this will be a change for residents, however, customer demand on Tuesdays and Thursdays is currently quite low, which gives us confidence that we can achieve cost savings and still continue to meet the needs of the Mount Morgan community,” Cr Rutherford said.

QCWA NEWS Hello everyone well how times change. In 1950 the Mount Morgan Branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association was opened. At the start the members would hold their meetings in the Council Chambers but with a lot of help from the community and fundraising the branch bought the hall off Mr Barnicoat who owned it and used it to run as a second hand furniture shop. As I said in the last write up in the Argus we have been looking at the hall and the decision has been made to sell the hall. This has not been an easy path to take but with the upkeep on the hall, the members voted to sell. We can continue to be a part of our community. We can meet in other places and have functions where ever we wish. But our branch will continue. We will get more members and remain a part of the Mount Morgan Community for many years to come. We invite all women in the local community to join us and enjoy the journey of discovery as we showcase our branch, our achievements past, present and future with new members, lots of skills, fun and friendship. We will still uphold the 3 - 17 February 2021

Mr Knox D’Arcy: gold & oil magnate

of his Mount Morgan stock in the event of it reaching a certain price … In D’Arcy’s absence, the stock in the Mount Morgan mine had gone up to £17 a share [in 1888]. His agents had acted up to instructions, and D’Arcy had £1,200,000* in cash to his credit, which was increasing every minute. Ninety-nine out of every 100 men would have been content with the fortune already won, but not so D’Arcy. Another gift of Mother Earth loomed up large in his mind - Oil …’ (‘Knox D’Arcy. Gold and Oil Magnate. Romance of Money. Mt. Morgan and Anglo Persian’, The Sun (Sydney, NSW: 1910-1954), 13 February 1924). * The Reserve Bank of Australia provides a guide as to today’s value of D’Arcy’s 1888 Mount Morgan fortune: ‘a basket of goods and services’ valued at £1,200,000 in the 1901 calendar year (the earliest calendar year in its pre-decimal inflation calculator) would cost about $187,000,000 in the 2019 calendar year.

‘Like a chapter in a romance reads the career of William Knox D’Arcy, the patron saint of the AngloPersian Oil Company [later, British Petroleum (BP)], and one of the founders of the famous Mount Morgan Mining Company. To begin with, D’Arcy … eked out a more or less precarious existence as a solicitor in Rockhampton … Squatters were his principal clients, and among them was a well-known character named Sandy [Gordon]. One day [Gordon] entered D’Arcy’s office, and throwing a piece of quartz on the desk, inquired what it was. “There is a whole mountain of it on my place”, [Gordon] told D’Arcy. Knowing at once that it was gold quartz, D’Arcy sent it to Sydney to be assayed, and on receiving the report had visions of fortune. And so it turned out. When he piled up about £100,000, D’Arcy took his wife on a trip to see the world. Before leaving, however, he instructed his agents to sell a big block Page 12

The Mount Morgan Library is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 31 Morgan Street. How you can show love to your library? The best way to celebrate libraries is to use them. This year Library Lover’s Day falls on a Sunday but don’t fret! You can still show your love towards the library by accessing our online content or by visiting in person during the month of February. The Rockhampton Regional Libraries have a wide range of digital content including eBooks, eAudiobooks, online courses and eMagazines! Visit our website to take advantage of this free content. How the library can help you celebrate Valentine’s Day? If you are celebrating a different event on February 14 the Rockhampton Regional Libraries would love to help. Valentine’s Day movies and novels can be found at all of our libraries. The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library. —Albert Einstein

Rockhampton Regional Libraries are located in Mount Morgan, Gracemere, South Rockhampton and North Rockhampton. For more information please call the Mount Morgan Library on 4936 8169 or the Rockhampton Regional Library on 4936 8043.
