he Design Center at the Merchandise Mart™ and LuxeHome® hosted Design Chicago, the Midwest’s largest residential design conference and inspirational trade fair, on Oct. 6 and 7. Downtown Chicago’s Merchandise Mart accommodated more than 2,000 attendees from across the Midwest in its 100 showrooms spanning more than 550,000 square feet of meeting space.

The show featured a variety of educational and innovative programming including: • More than 35 educational presentations and CEU seminars.

TRENDS IN FASHION HAVE LONG BEEN CONSIDERED TO BE CYCLICAL. WE JOKE ABOUT KEEPING SOMETHING TUCKED IN THE BACK OF OUR CLOSETS JUST LONG ENOUGH THAT IT COMES BACK IN VOGUE. THE SAME CAN BE SAID OF INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS, AND THIS YEAR’S “BELLE OF THE BALL” IS BRASS. 10

hat’s right, brass is back. We’re drifting away from the chilly clutches of silvery finishes and allowing the warmth of nostalgia to creep into designs.

Michelle Bradley, principal at BRADLEY, considers the

resurgence of brass to be both a nod to the past and a trend that’s focused on the future.

“As designers, we’re always looking for the next big thing to help express ourselves in a space,” says Bradley. “Everything in design is getting a little lighter, a little more pastel, which I think is a direct reflection of the

economy recovering and the new hope that comes with an election year.”

IT’S HERE TO STAY Brass has been considered “out” for so long that many manufacturers within the U.S. no longer have the capability or the skill set to braze brass. For

companies that prefer to do the majority of their manufacturing on home soil, like BRADLEY, this means they are often limited in size and scale regarding the pieces they can create.

“We try to get most of our work manufactured in the U.S.,” says Bradley. “Because the art of brass brazing is a rare skill,

we’re implementing this trend on smaller scales, such as brass legs on a glass coffee table or the feet of a sofa.”

High desirability and low availability means brass is still at the very beginning of its trend cycle and is mostly available in furniture accents and tabletop accessories. However, Bradley suspects it won’t be too long until U.S. manufacturers add brass brazing to their list of services, and when that happens, she predicts “we’ll see some different variations in the color treatments, such as rose gold, and new textures.”

NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER’S BRASS Unlike the perpetually shiny lacquered brass that was last popular two to three decades ago, designers are actually looking for the metal to be unfinished or raw. Pieces may require occasional polishing, but the goal is no longer blinding glossiness. In fact, the more patina the better, which Bradley calls “perfectly imperfect.”

Left on its own without any intervention, unlacquered brass will begin to darken in about a month and will continue to take on a deeper patina with age and use. Be warned, Bradley notes, that not all consumers are

prepared for the aging affects of brass.

“The mass market isn’t quite ready for the brass revival to the extent that the designers are.

Some clients call and complain that their new brass finishes and fixtures are changing color or look dirty.”

MIX AND MATCH YOUR METALS A solid option for incorporating brass into a design without overwhelming clients with the trend is to mix metals and textures.

“Nothing in design should really match anyway,” says Bradley.

To achieve this, Bradley suggests avoiding sticking to one stylistic time period in your design.

“Brass is traditionally an antique metal, but if you fill your space with antiques, it will look very old-fashioned. Instead, consider mixing a traditionalstyled sofa with a brass coffee table that has clean, modern lines for a curated and high-end look.”

The new versatility of the brass trend also means designers

are no longer restricted to one design style or another.

Bradley stresses that designers shouldn’t shy away from blurring the lines between traditional style categories and suggests something as simple as using a forged iron shelf accented with brass accessories.

“If you layer brass upon brass upon brass, your space will look very monotonous and stodgy, but if you add a little bit of that nostalgia with the brass to things that are new and fresh, it will add interest to the room and become somewhere people want to be.”

Stronger and harder than copper, but not as strong or hard as steel, brass is easy to form into various shapes.

It’s also decent conductor of heat and generally resistant to corrosion from salt water.

The manufacturing process of brass usually depends on the desired shape and chemical compounds of the brass you’re using, but, generally, the end result is achieved by turning the raw materials into molten metal and allowing the various properties to solidify as desired.

hrow out your rulebook on color. Everything you thought you knew about it will be challenged in 2016, as forecasters take color to another dimension—one where there are no hard and fast rules, where there are many color contradictions and where you are invited to not only see color, but to experience and feel it, as well.

The Pantone Color Institute®, a provider of professional color standards, and Benjamin Moore Paints, an authority on color in its own right, have each unveiled a color forecast for 2016 that highlights trends for the home interiors marketplace.

MADE IN THE SHADE “As media continue to move toward more evocative, imaginative and innovative uses of color to woo consumers, unexpected color stories are emerging,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

“To capture attention and keep product lines relevant in the consumer’s eye, it’s important to understand the impact that this always-morphing innovation will have on color and design trends for 2016.”

Pantone View home + interiors 2016 – Innovation and Impact, is a trend forecast highlighting color trends for the home and interiors marketplace in 2016. Containing nine key trend palettes, plus individual color and material direction, Pantone View home + interiors provides home furnishings and interior designers with the color information they need to make those critical color decisions.

“These color trends are influenced by anything and everything,” says Laurie

Pressman, vice president of Pantone Color Institute, “including lifestyles, playstyles, new technologies, traveling art exhibitions, street art, upcoming movies and sporting events, new travel destinations, social values and the economy.”

The nine palettes for 2016 are: Natural Forms, Dichotomy, Ephemera, Lineage, Soft Focus, Bijoux, Merriment, Footloose and Mixed Bag. • Unambiguous colors, including shades that are plumbed from natural sources such as warm rosy clay and sheepskin beige, give us Natural Forms.

• Dichotomy reinforces the concept that opposites do and can attract as silver metallic, sunny yellow and bright cobalt blue combine with calmer versions of the hues.

• Pastel-focused Ephemera blends delicate shades of wan blue, pale peach and tender yellow.

• Lineage is a palette where shades of navy, black, tan and regimental green co-mingle with touches of brighter colors.

• Soft Focus reveals subtle and/ or muted colors, sometimes being described as “smoky” and always versatile.

• In the French language, Bijoux means “jewelry” – a fitting title for this palette that gleams with drama and intensity across many jewel tones.

• Merriment is full of joyful shades including vibrant greens and yellows contrasted with pinks and oranges.

• Capricious color combinations with vacation-destination blues and blue-greens create Footloose – a palette that

supports the idea of throwing off the constricting scheduling of everyday life and simply enjoying the freedom of the outdoors.

• Mixed Bag is an assortment of eclectic patterns and prints, with exciting and unique colors like pirate black and mandarin red as well as violet and florid orange.

FASHION FORWARD A separate, yet similar, color palette was chosen by Pantone for the fashion industry. Look for these colors to overlap into home furnishings as well, says Pressman.

“While the top 10 shades we called out for Spring 2016 NY Fashion Week were not the exact hues as those featured in our Pantone View home + interiors

2016 color forecast, each of the top 10 colors is very close in appearance to the colors we are forecasting for home 2016 and the color feeling is the same,” she says.

“With home furnishings following closely on the heels of fashion, yes, the top 10 colors from the catwalk for Spring 2016 absolutely do have a place in home.”

Those color include Rose Quartz, Peach Echo, Serenity, Snorkel Blue, Buttercup, Limpet Shell, Lilac Gray, Fiesta, Iced Coffee and Green Flash.

GREAT WHITE In a colorful way, Benjamin Moore is calling for your surrender; for you to raise the white flag in honor of its Color of the Year for 2016: Simply White.

After months of studying

trends, the paint mogul decided to feature white in 2016 because white is elegant, refined and deliberate. White accepts and embraces anything you put next to it.

“It may be controversial (as Color of the Year), but it’s timeless, transcendent and there is not a more versatile color to use,” says Steve Baumann, designer showroom representative for Benjamin Moore. “It goes with everything.”

Benjamin Moore, which has 250 whites in its catalog, specifically chose Simply White because it is the most neutral and constant in various light sources. Even though it stands out as this year’s featured color, Benjamin Moore’s 2016 color palette also includes six other whites, proving just how important white will be in 2016.

White doesn’t go in and out of style. In fact, designers have always relied on white in some of its most classic forms via subway tile and wainscoting, but this year, white will take the forefront as designers layer it, use it with black to create contrast and combine it with other on-trend colors to develop innovative looks for their clients.

THE LOOK OF LAYERS If you really want to do white right, layering is going to be the look that elevates this silent hero to its greatest potential.

“Layering the whites adds texture and interest,” says Baumann. “Simply White has some warmth to it, so when you add a crisp white, they really look beautiful together. Our Ballet White is even warmer— truly the color of a ballet slipper,

with almost a tan undertone.

Layered together these colors really make a beautiful presence.”

An all-white color palette with layers of different whites instantly adds ambience and a subtle beauty to any room. It promotes mental clarity and encourages us to clear clutter. It represents wholeness.

WITH BLACK, IT’S MAGIC The contrast of a white and black palette has almost universal appeal. Angles and 16

edges become sharply defined when white is cut with black. It’s an invitation for a room to take shape. A celebration of form.

“Black will always be a great companion to white. Black Ink is one of our 2016 trend colors, as well,” says Baumann.

“Blending the two is a perfect way to define a space.”

Black’s softer side, gray, will continue to be popular in 2016 and can be used in much the same way with white.

“Gray is a great complement to white,” says Baumann.

“Layer our white Mascarpone with soft grays, like Gray Owl, one of our trend colors, to create a stylish room that has a soothing harmony.”

COLORING UP Just because white is hot this year doesn’t mean you have to give up color. Baumann says white actually invites the use of other colors because it’s such a blank canvas. Working in some saturated hues, like Benjamin Moore’s Ravishing Red and Banana Yellow, are really going

wto make that white pop.

Think of white as the guide that directs the eye to multiple color encounters. Use it to accentuate shapes, he says. Just don’t overuse it.

“White is a crisp backdrop for darker furnishings and, of course, artwork,” Baumann says.

“Use color as trim or as accent on doors and behind bookshelves.

Just a dose of color to add some fun, to highlight architecture.”

Furniture is, of course, another great way to add color.

Painted and lacquered furniture

will continue to be a trend.

“With a coat of paint, furniture can be transformed, be it vintage or new,” says Baumann.

“So painted furniture is an innovative way to introduce another finish besides wood tone and it is a great way to carry over a color palette—especially our 2016 accent colors. It makes the overall design more cohesive.

“A good mix of metal, wood and painted pieces will add variety and make an interior more interesting,” says Baumann.
