April 29, 2022 To the Rev. Protopresbyter Paul Palesty; the Rev. Economos Aristidis Garinis; the gracious Aspasia Hatzoglou, President, and Maria Siakavellas, Vice President; and all of the esteemed officers, administrators, faculty, students, staff, parents and friends of the Saint Nicholas William Spyropoulos Greek-American Day School Parent Teacher Association in Flushing, New York: It is with sentiments of heartfelt gladness and paternal delight that I embrace you warmly in the ineffable joy of our Lord and Savior’s Resurrection, while merrily proclaiming: Χριστός Ἀνέστη! Christ is Risen! As you gather together again in jubilant fashion in order to celebrate your 43rd Annual Dinner Dance — following a two-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic — I would like to offer to all of you these words of wholehearted commendation and paternal praise in appreciation of your strong perseverance and unwavering dedication in overcoming the unique challenges and uncertainties of the last year. Indeed, as you draw near to another fruitful and edifying school year, your steadfast and selfless commitment to preserving and advancing the noble values and ideals of our HellenicChristian faith and culture remains as inspiring as ever. These early adolescent years constitute a major formative opportunity and experience in the lives of our children, and it is our sacred duty and privilege to earnestly equip them with an education and upbringing that properly encompasses a well-balanced understanding of all fields of education. To this extent, then, I would like to congratulate all of you for the sincere conviction you demonstrated in continuing to uphold this most venerable task. Even in the face of newfound adversities, you worked together with one another in a mutual spirit of understanding and unity, so as to instill and upbuild within your pupils a very precious wellspring of knowledge, as well as an unabated desire for academic excellence. And thus, this worthy accomplishment of yours constitutes a source of deep emotion and pride for me personally. May you always worthily nurture and cultivate the budding hearts and minds of these young and delicate seedlings of our future, so that through the wholesome nourishment of your instruction, they may mature and “blossom forth as the lily…strike root as the poplar…spread out their shoots…and [possess] a beauty like the olive tree and a fragrance like Lebanon.” (Hosea 14:5-6) Extending to you my archpastoral blessings and prayers for much peace and enlightenment, spiritual prosperity and success from above, in all of your scholastic efforts and endeavors, I remain With paternal love in the Risen Lord,

April 29, 2022 Dear P.T.A.
CHRIST IS RISEN!!!
Our presence this evening is to celebrate the workings of our beloved St Nicholas P.T.A. One of the reasons our school has distinguished itself among similar institutions is because of our dynamic parents who are involved with their children’s educational growth, but, also, know how to respect the administrative process for such success. I’m sure our honoree this evening, Mrs. Elaine Mallios can testify to this collaboration. Elaine has been a successful force in enhancing the learning environment of our school during her eleven-year tenure as School Board President. We thank her for her educational focus and genuine love for the education of our children. As we give all, parents and educators turn our attention to our children’s academic growth we must consider seriously their spiritual formation in the life of the Church, their salvation is depended upon this work. Being a good parent can be a difficult and challenging venture, but at the same time can be the most rewarding and fulfilling thing we ever do. The tradition of our Church and Bible has a great deal to say about the way we can successfully raise our children to be men and women of God. As a good parent, the first thing we must do is teach them the truth about our Faith and His Holy Word—Who is Jesus. Along with loving God and being a godly example by committing ourselves to His commands, we need to heed the command of Deuteronomy 6:7-9 regarding teaching our children to do the same. This passage emphasizes the ongoing nature of such instruction. It should be done at all times—at home, on the road, at night, and in the morning. Living our life in Christ should be the foundation of our homes. By following the principles of these commands, we teach our children that worshiping God should be constant, most especially on Sunday mornings when we come into the presence of the living God through the Holy Eucharist. Discipline and instruction are integral parts of being a good parent. Proverbs 13:24 says, “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.” It should be noted that “rod” does not necessarily denote physical discipline, but the act of disciplining. Children who grow up in undisciplined households feel unwanted and unworthy. They lack direction and self-control, and as they get older, they rebel and have little or no respect for any kind of authority, including God's. At the same time, discipline must be balanced with love, or children may grow up resentful, discouraged, and rebellious. God recognizes that discipline is painful when it is happening, but if followed by loving instruction, it is remarkably beneficial to the child. “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). As a good parent, it is important to involve your children in the church family and ministry when they are young. Regularly attend the Holy Liturgy, allow them to see you worshipping and meditating the Word of God and trying to live in the tradition of our Holy Church. It is important to discuss with them the world around them as they see it and teach them about the glory of God through everyday life. “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not turn from it” (Proverbs 22:6). Being a good parent is all about raising children who will follow your example in obeying and worshipping the Lord. May our Lord Bless all those who work with our children Priests, Teachers, and Parents and may we collaborate to achieve desired results in their academic, spiritual, emotional, psychological, and social lives. Yours faithfully, Protopresbyter Paul C. Palesty, pastor
Dear Compatriots, dear Hellenes, Χριστος Ανεστη! It is my distinct honor and pleasure to have the opportunity to reach out to you and congratulate you for your achievements in fostering Hellenic education, culture, and strengthening the bonds between the Greek community in the United States and the homeland. I have had the opportunity to visit a number of schools and educational institutions during my short tenure here, and in each and every one, I have felt that the spirit of Hellenism I encountered strengthened me morally and made me a better representative of Cyprus in the U.S. I have said this before, and I say it again: your actions, your perseverance, your faith, and your resilience, to preserve, bolster and share the Hellenic values of your ancestors, pass them on to your children, and through these empower them in their future, is worthy of the heartfelt gratitude of all metropolitan Greeks, in Greece and Cyprus. You are a model for us, and we thank you. At this time, I would like to offer my congratulations to Mrs. Elaine Mallios, for her tremendous contribution to the school, but also to the teachers and the parents of the St. Nicholas William Spyropoulos School. It is your commitment that is keeping these ellinopoula in touch with their heritage, the language of their forefathers and the faith of an entire ethnos. Ένα μεγάλο ΕΥΓΕ! ΑΞΙΟΙ! It is with great joy that I greet all of you here tonight at this beautiful event that, for as long as I can remember, has always been an event we looked forward to every year. Unfortunately, for the past two years, this event became one of the causalities of the pandemic and, thus, we have not gotten together in a long time to celebrate our school as a family; therefore, the joy of being here tonight with all of you is great. We can finally get together again to “break bread”, dance, relax and have a good time. As we are approaching the end of this school year, we can reflect on the events that occurred, the struggles, the rewards, the success and the accomplishments. The past two years have tested our strength, our resilience, our capabilities. We had to fight an invisible enemy that wanted to take control and make us weak. We did not, however, let this enemy have the upper hand. We fought, we persisted, and we persevered. Thanks to the tireless efforts and cooperation of our Parish Council, our School Board, our teachers, our parents and students, we were able to overcome and emerge intact and stronger. We were united; we were strong; we were a team… the St. Nicholas, William Spyropoulos Team. I would like to take this opportunity and thank every single one of you for your invaluable support and contribution to our successful fight against COVID and for all that we have accomplished together. As a school we worked together, and we made it. As a team we joined forces and we persevered. Thank you! There is one person, however, who deserves a special thank you… a person who, at the very onset of COVID, made her mark and made it possible for us to start strong and be ahead of the game in the darkest hours of the pandemic. Thanks to her foresight and determination, we were technologically ready to fight the challenges of COVID head on. Thanks to her passion for technology and her resolve, in March of 2020, we were able to have our teachers trained and ready to welcome their students in their virtual Google Classroom without skipping a beat. This woman is the woman we honor here tonight. This woman is Mrs. Elaine Mallios who, through the years, has served the William Spyropoulos students in many roles: as a teacher; as an administrator and as a School Board President. Tonight, we celebrate her as the School Board President who has distinguished herself through her professionalism, her integrity, her wisdom and her love for perfection. Thanks to Elaine, the Wm. Spyropoulos School has a brand-new website and cutting-edge technology with a state-of-the-art Computer Room, a brand new Art Studio, and Smart Boards in every classroom. Thanks to Elaine and her experience, knowledge, wisdom, encouragement, and strong leadership our school endured triumphantly during that first year of the pandemic. Elaine is a dedicated, caring, conscientious individual who sets high standards and noble goals, and she does not rest until she achieves them. I truly consider it an honor and a privilege to call Elaine Mallios my colleague, my friend, a person I have known and worked with for many years and who, as a School Board President, made my life as a Principal during very challenging times easier, happier and more rewarding. Thank you, Elaine, for all you have done for our beloved William Spyropoulos School and for making such a positive impact on the school lives of our teachers and students. We will forever be grateful. Congratulations to Mrs. Aspasia Hatzoglu, the Dinner Dance Committee, and the entire PTA for this beautiful event and for everything they do for our school throughout the year. We are fortunate to have parents like you who work very hard for the benefit of our students and who contribute so generously to the emotional, social and intellectual growth of our Spyropoulites. Καλη Διασκεδαση! Respectfully, Mary Tzallas, Principal

Dearest Saint Nicholas William Spyropoulos School Family, Christ Has Risen! How heartwarming and wonderful it is to once again be a part of this beautiful occasion. Our spiritual fathers, administrators, teachers, parents, students, and supporters of our school have gathered this evening to celebrate together at the annual William Spyropoulos Parent Teacher Association Dinner Dance. The last two years have been difficult ones for everyone, but in these challenging times, the Saint Nicholas William Spyropoulos School has endured and persevered, and this could not have been possible without the support and help of our dynamic Parent Teacher Association. Thanks to the generosity, dedication, and efforts of our PTA, our Spyropoulites were able to return to school for in-person instruction in the fall of 2020. And, throughout the pandemic, the PTA continued to support in any way possible, ensuring that our students would remain safe as they received uninterrupted and continuous classroom instruction. On behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, I would like to extend a very heartfelt THANK YOU to our PTA for all that you do for our school! This year our William Spyropoulos Parent Teacher Association is honoring a very remarkable woman- Mrs. Elaine Mallios. I have had the pleasure of personally working with Mrs. Mallios and have witnessed firsthand her devotion to our school and her dedication to the education of our children. As President of the School Board, Mrs. Mallios worked tirelessly to achieve the mission of our school; that is, to provide students with a solid education focused on achieving academic excellence and character development in a nurturing environment. Before anyone else, Mrs. Mallios had the foresight to recognize the growing role of technology in education, and because of her vision every classroom in our school is equipped with an interactive SmartBoard today. Among other things, Mrs. Mallios was also instrumental in the launching of our school’s website, the renovation of our Science Lab, and the transformation of our Art Studio. Mrs. Mallios impacted our school in so many beautiful ways, and for that we are truly blessed and very grateful. Congratulations to you, Mrs. Mallios, for this well-deserved honor! Congratulations to our vibrant Parent Teacher Association for organizing such a beautiful event!
Respectfully, Georgia Kakivelis

Dear St. Nicholas William Spyropoulos Family and Friends, Christ has Risen! Χριστος Ανεστη! On behalf of the William Spyropoulos PTA, I would like to welcome each one of you here tonight to celebrate our 43rd annual dinner dance. It is with great privilege and pleasure that we can gather again and celebrate another successful year. The past 2 years have been challenging for many in our community so being able to celebrate today is a true honor. We would like to extend a very big Thank you to our Principal Mrs. Mary Tzallas and Assistant Principal Mrs. Georgia Kakivelis. The support they give our PTA is very much appreciated. The dedication and love they hold for our children and school is amazing. Their hard work and endless efforts of support to our William Spyropoulos Families and St. Nicholas Community is truly a blessing. We also would like to thank Father Paul, Father Aristidis, Peter Valasiadis, Georgia Athanasopoulos, and all our teachers, staff as well as the entire St. Nicholas Community for their continued support of our PTA. Class of 2022! We congratulate you on your achievements. We are so proud to be able to share this wonderful moment in your lives. As you have all heard before “YOU are a SPYROPOULITE.” May God guide you in your new chapter of life and keep you safe in all future endeavors. Today, we honor Mrs. Elaine Mallios. Mrs. Mallios’s commitment to our students while serving as our School Board President is constantly seen in our school building. The smart boards in the classrooms, the science room our children get to experiment in, the art room they get to be creative in, all have a touch of love from Mrs. Mallios. We are truly grateful for you and all you have accomplished for our children. May God bless you and your family. As I am writing this, I can’t help but think how truly privileged I am, that I was given the opportunity to serve as your PTA President. I thank you all for trusting me, I thank you for having faith in me and I thank you for supporting me. This year the success of the PTA would not be possible without the support I received by my officers of the PTA: Maria Siakavellas, Xanthi Schreiner, Sonia Tsilogiannis, Angie Koutsivitis, Anna Xerakias, Popi Evdos, Alexia Kontogianis and Irene Xylas. I would also like to acknowledge all Executive Board members who supported me throughout the year and showed your dedication to our school and most important our students. Without all of you the traditions our children have learned to love while attending William Spyropoulos would not be possible. The William Spyropoulos PTA is an outstanding group of volunteers and dedicated people. We are one of a kind that many seem to envy. We accomplish any task requested or any idea created and make it come alive. I believe by the grace of God this is possible because we all have the same goal of maintaining and keeping our faith, school and students fulfilled with happiness and success. I am truly grateful and honored to be part of the St. Nicholas, William Spyropoulos Community. Sincerely, Aspasia Hatzoglu William Spyropoulos PTA President
Mrs. Elaine Mallios So many facets of Mrs. Elaine Mallios’s life have been spent within the walls of the St. Nicholas William Spyropoulos School, and she cannot imagine things any other way. An active and dedicated member of the community, through the years she has not only served as School Board President, but she has also been a William Spyropoulos Day School teacher, St. Nicholas Sunday school teacher, and William Spyropoulos parent. She reflects on her journey with gratitude, acknowledging that the community has played a crucial role in her life. “It’s a complete honor: I was a teacher, a parent and then school board president … I was just blessed over and over at St. Nicholas,” she says. Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Mallios eventually moved to Westbury, Long Island as a young girl and remained there through her elementary, middle school and high school years. She then attended Oneonta State College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Upon college graduation, she began teaching fifth grade at a Central Islip school, a position she held for four years. During that tenure, she met her husband Costa; they married in November 1969, and soon moved to Flushing, Queens. With that move, Mrs. Mallios began working in a school in Westbury to be a bit closer to her new home. She remained a teacher in Westbury until 1974, at which time, she began her first year of maternity leave. Four years and two sons later, her journey with the William Spyropoulos School commenced, as in 1978, Mrs. Mallios began teaching first grade part time. The following year, she became a full-time second grade teacher and held that position for eleven years. All in all, Mrs. Mallios spent twelve years teaching at the William Spyropoulos Day School and thirteen years teaching Sunday School for St. Nicholas Church. While working at the William Spyropoulos School, she also attended St. John’s University where she was awarded a Certificate of Academic Excellence for completing her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration & Supervision with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Following her time at the William Spyropoulos School, Mrs. Mallios began work as a math specialist at PS 81 in Ridgewood, Queens. Soon after, she became a New York State Math Mentor, representing NYC’s Community School District 24. In her capacity as NYS Math Mentor, she attended meetings with the district’s Math Coordinator to learn first-hand any new testing and math curriculum requirements from the state. To convey this information to fellow teachers, Mrs. Mallios modeled lessons, strategized teaching methods and presented new ways to instruct math to students.
During her time at PS 81, Mrs. Mallios recognized a resounding need for the efficient acquisition and distribution of supplies for the school’s staff and faculty. So, she went on to establish and lead the Curriculum Committee, which became the purchasing agents for PS 81. Under her guidance, the teachers and faculty of the school were wanting of nothing, and supplies were plentiful for all to utilize in their day-to-day work. Throughout her years as a teacher within the NYC public school system, Mrs. Mallios was also an instructor for the NYC Board of Education. She taught graduate classes through Fordham University and in various locations in Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. She enjoyed collaborating and engaging with fellow teachers in this way, helping them finetune instruction methods to maximize student learning. After six years, Mrs. Mallios moved on to a new position, acquiring the role of math specialist for Manhasset’s Munsey Park School in 1997. There, she learned the workings of a new math program, strategized with teachers on the most effective ways to teach the program, modeled lessons and, for ten years, proved invaluable to the Munsey Park faculty. She retired from her position at Munsey Park in 2007. Following only a year of retirement, Mrs. Mallios was approached by a former principal with a new opportunity to act as math specialist for Buckley Country Day School. There she
Mrs. Mallios teaching in her William Spyropoulos classroom.
worked part time for nearly twelve years, once again proving indispensable to the faculty and staff she supported. It was during her time at Buckley that Mrs. Mallios was approached by the Parish Council of St. Nicholas Church and asked if she would consider the position of President of the William Spyropoulos School Board. In what she says, “was the greatest honor she could ever end up receiving,” Mrs. Mallios began her role as President of the William Spyropoulos School Board in late 2011. “It was astounding that I could come back and work for the school, work alongside the administration, the teachers and the parents to move forward,” she says. And move forward she did. Under her guidance, the William Spyropoulos School Board initiated changes in technology that modernized classrooms and ushered the school into the digital age. Changes that students would benefit from for years to come.
Likening her time within the community to a longitudinal study, Mrs. Mallios maintains that the William Spyropoulos School is to her something far more precious and unique than any other institution. “I’ve seen individuals as kids; I’ve seen them grow up, become professionals, raise their own families and now some are even becoming grandparents. It’s a wonderful thing. I don’t see any of the kids I taught in Central Islip, no kids from PS 81, but I see the Spyropoulos kids everywhere I go. And that’s amazing,” she says. “The legacy that Spyropoulos offers people. You may not understand it now. But if you keep up with the church, you will see it. These people will be your lifelong friends. They are the people that make that whole time of your life there in the school, never leave you.” Mrs. Elaine Mallios is married to Costas Mallios and has two children: James and Andrew. James (WS class of 1988) is married to Janell Vantrease, and they have two children, Luella (9) and Nestor (6). Andrew (WS class of 1990) is married to Chrisoula Politis (one of Mrs. Mallios’s second grade Spyropoulos students, WS class of 1991) and they have Alexander (14) and Daphne (11). Her grandchildren are her pride and joy, and she loves relishing life’s simple pleasures with them. “It is the blessing of all blessings to take care of your grandchildren,” Mrs. Mallios shares. “People will say, ‘When do you have time for yourself?’ and I always say, ‘But I am doing this for myself.’”
Mrs. Mallios with her husband and grandchildren (above) and her sons (right).
Among the most notable projects the school board completed during Mrs. Mallios’s near ten-year term as President, are the installation of smartboards in every classroom, a complete overhaul of the school computer lab, the addition of a state-ofthe-art science lab for the junior high school, a cloud-based student information system, as well as the launch of the school’s web site. Moreover, the school board’s grant application with Google for G Suite software and programming two years prior to the start of the pandemic, allowed for a seamless transition to virtual learning in March of 2020, and enabled William Spyropoulos teachers to continue their invaluable work throughout the last two years without interruption. Together with William Spyropoulos administrators, faculty, PTA officers and executive board members, alumni, donors, volunteers and clergy, Mrs. Mallios tackled tasks with steadfast determination to further enhance the learning environment for students and teachers alike. She remained President of the William Spyropoulos School Board until retiring from the position in January of 2021.

CHRISTINA KANTLIS ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH WILLIAM SPYROPOULOS SCHOOL GRADUATE CLASS 2022
It has been surreal watching you grow from that smart, bubbly little girl to the independent, beautiful young lady you are today. Every day you manage to warm our hearts with your bright smile and lift our spirits with your sweet laughter. You have embraced challenges like a pro and showed us you were ready for the “big world” from the age of seven when you trekked to school on the NYC buses and trains through rain, heat, and snow. You did it all with such enthusiasm, inspiring us all to grow and learn in so many ways. Continue to push forward with your diligence and determination to reach whatever goals you set out for yourself. You’ve shown us what you’re made of, and we couldn’t be more proud. Congratulations on your graduation! Stay humble and remember to always keep God as your center. We promise to love and support you always. Love, Mom, Dad, Vageli, Christo, Georgia and Peter
Vasia, Congratulations on this wonderful achievement! As you graduate the 8th grade and enter a new chapter, always remember to embrace life with passion and keep reaching for your star.
Keep shining! We love you, Dad, Mom and George

Precious memories, laughter and fun Years long gone by thoughts of you son. You’ve filled our lives with so much joy How we love you darling boy! Each day you learn so many things new And we are truly so proud of you! When faced with a choice of right or wrong You remember your values and stand so strong. As the years pass your strength will be put to the test, But you believe in God and you’re a child who is blessed. Strive to make all of your dreams come true There’s nothing “my son” that you can’t do! Congratulations to all the graduates of 2022! Congratulations Tommy! May all good things come your way! Love, Mom, Dad, Taso, Mario and Angelique
Our dearest Christina, Words cannot express how proud we are of you and your accomplishments. Keep smiling and reaching for the stars! Always remember you are BRAVER than you believe STRONGER than you seem SMARTER than you think and LOVED more than you know! Congratulations to you and the Class of 2022! Love, Mom, Dad, and Maria
To Our Wonderful Son and Graduate Nicholas Xanthakos You stole our hearts from the very moment you entered this world. You have always been a very loving and kindhearted boy, as well as the best big brother and role model to Gabriel. We have always been very proud of you and your accomplishments. From your very first steps, to this wonderful accomplishment of graduating from Wm. Spyropoulos middle school and forging ahead to high school. Nothing could have prepared us for this moment. The moment we no longer see a little boy, but an amazing young man who has overcome so much to get to a place where he can choose for himself, a high school to attend, after being accepted by all the schools he applied to. Your hard work and resilience, along with the support of your teachers, has brought you to a place where you have longed to be. We are positive that your compassion, hard work and will to succeed will carry you through this new chapter of high school, and you will once again come to achieve your goals, hopes and dreams. Be confident, persistent and true to yourself, and to those you love, and you will never falter. Remember to smile, because “when you smile, the whole world is beautiful”. We love you beyond words and are very proud of you. Congratulations! With All Our Love, Mom, Dad and Gabriel “You have the brains in your head. You have the feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose!” Dr. Seuss
