EXCHANGES

It is with great honour that the SCOPRE team presents the second edition of its annual MMSA Exchanges Booklet for 2021-2022. This would not have been possible were it not for the dedication of the entire SCOPRE-Out and SCOPREIn teams, and Julia Woods who designed and Gerald Sammut who updated the booklet. The process of making all these exchanges available to the MMSA student body was very challenging and was made more complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic but seeing all this come to fruition fills us with great pride. Exchanges have a long history within our organisation and for many years they have provided students with new friends, family, knowledge and experience. Exchanges are truly the perfect opportunity to broaden one’s horizon and learn so much more about being independent and working with people from all around the world. There is no better opportunity to travel and learn: exploring the globe and your inner self.

Moreover, every medical association abroad organises some sort of social program for its incoming exchange students. This social program provides all travelling students with the chance to sight-see, make new friends, go to parties and much more. That being said, there’s nothing stopping you from creating your own social program with the friends you make!

Above all else, an exchange is the perfect opportunity to train to become a better doctor. Whether you’re interested in research, medicine, surgery or public health, there’s an exchange for you. Exchanges are often more handson than opportunities here at home and medical associations abroad will often provide students with Upon-Arrival Training or other lectures to further increase training. Truly, participating in an exchange is a must for any hopeful doctor.

Naturally, all of this comes at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has raised a large amount of uncertainty surrounding so many of our daily activities. That being said, we remain determined to deliver quality exchanges to our students and we hope to be able to help any students with any queries or worries they may be having pertaining to exchanges and their travels.

So you’re thinking about going on an exchange? The first thing you need to know is that exchanges are divided into SCOPE (Standing Committee of Professional Exchanges), SCORE (Standing Committee of Research Exchanges) and SCOPH (Standing committee of Public Health) exchanges. Like last year, we will also be offering the Stirling elective as part of our program (See UK for more info on Stirling electives).

All the above opportunities are allocated to students depending on how many MMSA points they have at the time of the Final Points Ranking. The more points a student has, the more likely they are to be awarded the top exchange of choice. Points are allocated to students depending on how involved they are in the MMSA according to the MMSA Points protocol. The final points ranking and the applications for exchanges will be opened on the 19th of November. Students will be able to rank their top 10 exchange destinations. You can apply either by yourself or with one or more students. Exchanges are preferably awarded to those who have more MMSA Points. If you choose to apply with a friend, then the average of your points will be taken for your application. That being said, last year many exchanges were not taken up so you have nothing to lose by applying! Chances are you’ll still get something even if you don’t have many points! Applications will then close on the 26th of November and the allocation of exchanges will be posted on the 30th of November. If there are more places left afterwards, there may be a second and even third call. Those who are allocated an exchange will then attend a pre-departure training session with information on how to finalise a proper application for the exchange.

Once you are allocated a country for an exchange, you will be guided to send a proper application through the IFMSA website where you’ll be able to select your preferred cities and projects/departments.

For exchanges there are 2 fees: €185

exchange

fee

-

includes

This is refundable if the student is not awarded an exchange or if something extraordinary comes up that prevents someone from going on their exchange €15 application fee (non refundable) - needed for the MMSA to keep exchanges going.

wherever they can. While most SCOPE exchanges are reserved for clinical students only (3rd year and up), there are a few SCOPE opportunities for preclinical students too. Students will be able to select their preferred departments for the exchange.

Research exchanges allow students to choose a particular research topic and work alongside a research team on said project. Research varies from lab work with clinical experience to working with data and so much more. In some countries, students may also have the opportunity to present or publish their work. Whilst pre-clinical students are more likely to apply for SCORE exchanges, clinical students can also equally benefit from these exchanges! Click here for the list of projects

scoph Like research exchanges, students participating in SCOPH exchanges will pick an internship project and do a mixture of research and clinical work on an aspect of public health. SCOPH exchanges are unique opportunities to be exposed to more endemic problems as well as deal with more personal public health issues.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has affected nations all over the world. Through all of this, the MMSA has put measures into place that prioritise student safety whilst ensuring our campaigns and even exchanges can keep going. That being said, due to the pandemic, exchanges in certain countries could not be planned as normal and as such, Malta was unable to sign contracts with them for this year.

As the exchanges team, we remain cautiously optimistic and hope that we’ll still be able to offer the student body quality exchanges for the Summer of 2022. Should any exchanges be cancelled, all students affected will receive a €185 refund.

Gratuity is normally included at restaurants, so check for this before you tip. Many shops and restaurants close on Sundays. 14-22°C with rain on roughly half of the days and 18 hrs of sunlight with the sunsetting at 10:30 pm

Tips: Don’t forget your night mask as Finland being so far north boast around 18 hrs of daylight and so getting your sleep may be a bit hard until you adjust. Finnish people are polite but not majorly interested in endless chit chat and in talking to strangers. Tipping is not compulsory, but is appreciated. Don’t forget to pack warm clothes as it can get quite cold at night. You can pick wild berries and mushrooms, but not someone’s apples or plums. You can go canoeing and camping, but not too close to someone’s house. Finland is known to be very safe. Finland has a strong drinking culture. People over 18 can only drink alcohol up to 22%, while if you are above 20 you can buy alcoholic drinks of any kind from an Alko as openly beers and ciders are sold in supermarkets.

ABOUT It's hard to beat the range of experiences that Indonesia has to offer, being made up of over 17,000 diverse islands. The people are as radically different from each other as the variety of landscapes you'll see. The great thing about adventure in Indonesia is that it happens when you least expect it.
