After Camp Activities After Camp Academics: Individual Lessons with Ms. Elizabeth Falls Ms. Elizabeth will be teaching private lessons from 3:30 - 5:15 p.m. each afternoon. Lessons will focus on math and language (reading) and is open to all preschool and rising kindergarten students. Lessons are filled on a first come first serve basis and will be offered every afternoon in 45 minute increments (3:30-4:15 & 4:30-5:15). In order to keep the lessons individualized, please note there is a two student maximum per session. Note: there is an additional fee for these lessons. Ms. Elizabeth is the Lead Teacher in one of the Preschool/Kindergarten classes at MMS. This is Ms. Elizabeth’s fourteenth year teaching at Millhopper Montessori School. She started as an Assistant Teacher in the Lower Elementary Classroom. Ms. Elizabeth holds her 3-6 AMS Montessori Certificate, is trained in Phono-Graphix and has completed the Montessori Key Concepts Workshop. She has thirteen years experience in the Lower Elementary level. Elizabeth has a background and interest in working with special needs children. Elizabeth holds her BS in Psychology/Child Studies. She also holds an Associate of Science degree in Medical Administration. She is a mother of three, all of whom have attended MMS.

Every Friday is SPLASH DAY, excluding week 1. Splash Day is a fun filled hour of water related activities. There will be thematic dress-up days on Thursday of each week.

SCHEDULE & FEES Ms. Crystal Sorrow Ms. Crystal began working at MMS in the fall of 1999 after graduating from the University of Florida with a BA in English Literature. She was the Assistant Teacher in the Preschool/Kindergarten class for the 1999-2000 school year, was part of the administrative team from summer 2000 – fall 2001, and took over as Lead Teacher in the Early Childhood/ Beginner’s Class in October 2001. Ms. Crystal holds the Early Childhood Montessori certificate. She supervises the fifth grade Safety Patrols who assist the school by providing a morning and afternoon drop off service. Ms. Crystal has also taught Cooking and Creative Movement in after school studios at MMS.

Elementary/Middle School

MEET THE TEACHERS Richard Aslanian has been teaching at Millhopper Montessori School for the past eighteen years. During that time he has been an assistant in preschool/ kindergarten and K-1 classes and a Lead Teacher for classes containing grades first through fourth. Richard holds a BA in History from the University of Florida. He received his AMS certificate in 1997 and has been trained in Phono-Graphix. Richard is married to Ms. Sylvia, the Technology and Drama Instructor. Both of his sons attended Millhopper Montessori School. His younger son attended the school for twelve years; and now attends Eastside High School’s Pre IB program. His other son is attending Santa Fe College and is employed part time at MMS. Richard hosts Chess Club on Tuesday afternoon during the regular school year and coaches our middle school basketball team. Sylvia has been a part of the MMS family for nineteen years. For the past nine years, Sylvia has co-directed the Elementary/Middle School End of the Year Show. She has adapted many plays for the Summer Drama Camp, including several Shakespeare works, and assisted Richard during the summer programs. She is the director of the Elementary/Middle School Drama Club and the Annual Shakespeare Festival at the Thomas Center. Theater took her to Los Angeles after attending SFC where she pursued a career as a Producer’s Assistant at Trans World Entertainment/Epic Productions. There she learned many aspects of the business for four years. Sylvia also worked as a puppeteer assistant for Fun Amusement Inc. where she learned television production. She has worked as a Kindergarten assistant at Nova Elementary with the special needs students of Creole, Canadian, and Spanish backgrounds. She worked at the front desk as well as an assistant in the Preschool/Kindergarten class. Sylvia has also taught Spanish to Preschool, Kindergarten, and Elementary students. Both of her sons attended Millhopper Montessori School. Her younger son attended the school for twelve years. He is attending Eastside High School’s Pre IB program. Her other son is attending SFC and is employed part time at MMS. Ms. Susan Salvatore holds the AMS Montessori Elementary Education teaching credential and has been teaching at MMS for thirty-four years. She has experience ranging from age two through eighth grade. Susan has overseen the operation of the Elementary/Middle School Morning Program for six years and is also the Study Hall Supervisor. Susan teaches US History, Math and manages many aspects of the Senior Elementary Class.

Jeanne-Marie returned to MMS in 2006 to assist in the Beginner’s Class and to teach Spanish in the Early Childhood program. She had been a French and Spanish teacher, as well as an assistant teacher in our summer programs (PK-5th grade) in 1995 and 1996. She also taught the Spanish classes (K-8) during the fall semester of 1999 and developed a Spanish program for Millhopper Montessori School at that time. She taught Spanish and French (grades 6-12) at Oak Hall School for twelve years and helped to develop the MS Foreign Language Program and the Foreign Language Curriculum (PK12) while she was there. During her graduate work at the University of Florida, she taught beginning French classes and tutored students in both French and Spanish. She earned a BA in Romance Languages with a minor in business from Catholic University. She worked in International Business before coming to Gainesville to do an MA in Romance Languages with an emphasis on Second Language Acquisition and a minor in Education from the University of Florida. Since August of 2010 she has been in charge of teaching all the Spanish classes (Beginner’s – 8th Grade) and continues to be the Morning Care Supervisor. Her daughter attended MMS from 4th8th grades.

Coach Cam Parker has been with MMS for five years! He has worked in summer camps for fourteen years. His sports background includes facilitating youth leagues and refereeing youth sports, not to mention being an avid sports fan. Coach Cam received his Bachelors degree from UF (Go Gators!) in Family, Youth and Community Sciences. He completed the State of Florida teacher certification program for Physical Education K-12 at Santa Fe College.

Mr. Obed Resendez is a graduate from the University of Florida, with a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration and a minor in Music. In his spare time he teaches percussion at a competitive level-with Drum Corps International and is a well renowned cymbals instructor in the DCI and WGI community. He has won two competitive world medals and has been featured in the book, Cymbal Technique 101 (for his innovative way of approaching cymbal techniques and practices). While at UF, he was a drummer for the Florida pride of the sunshine gator marching band and performed for the entertainment of the 2008 championship game and the 2009 sugar bowl. As a drummer, he has also had the opportunity to perform with pop artist, Enrique Iglesias. His musical theater experience includes a production of West Side story for JSU and Ocala civic theater’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Drama: Good Manners: A Medieval Quest for Polite Behavior (rising 2nd—6th graders) Production Crew (rising 7th-12th graders) It’s the Middle Ages, and a wicked spell has been cast on the kingdom: good manners have suddenly disappeared, and it’s up to Sir Gwendolyn and Sir Dancelot to bring them back. The two knights (both relatively new to this “quest” thing) have no clue what to do, and of course things go terribly wrong. But luckily for the kingdom, they run into just the right characters to help them (re)discover polite behavior: an alchemist has invented hygiene, a baron teaches them social etiquette, the Black Knight encourages them to learn to help others, a damsel (definitely not in distress) reveals the importance of asking permission, a spoon-loving abbot shares the joys of table manners, and a dragon explains why it’s mean to call people names (dragons have feelings too).

Baseball (rising 2nd—6th graders) Scheduled in rhythm with the MLB All-Star Break, campers will play a wide variety of baseball related mini-games, including the daily homerun derby and learning to throw crazy pitches with wiffle balls (or trying to atleast!). Campers make predictions for the all-star festivities while learning about the players involved. Each day will consist of a variety of games, skill drills, knowledge based activities and even crafts relative to the weeks theme sport(s). We will not be playing any particular sport exclusively. Drma: It’s Electrifying! (rising 2nd—6th graders) - Production Crew (rising 7th-12th graders) Historical figures such as Ben Franklin and Thomas Edison guide students through such topics as how electricity was "discovered," how it travels, different forms of production of electricity, and conversation.

Aquatics (rising 2nd - 8th graders) Camper will participate in two onsite water extravaganzas where we introduce some H20 to a few popular games. This will go along with trips to two local swimming venues (TBA) and a voyage to Aquatica in Orlando. Registration priority will be given to campers who participated in other weeks of the Wild World of Sports Camp. *The price of the field trips will be in addition to the camp fee listed and will be collected with the permission slips.

Summer Camp 2012

8505 NW 39th Avenue Gainesville, FL 32606 Thank you for your interest in Millhopper Montessori Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2012 Summer Camp! Our camp is in itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 33rd year! Millhopper Montessori School (MMS) will offer an enriching and exciting day camp for Preschool/Kindergarten, Elementary and Middle School students June 11th-July 20th. The camp activities will include specialty classes, crafts, games, sports, and special events that revolve around a variety of themes. The Preschool & Kindergarten students will experience a Montessori hands on curriculum, weekly educational fun themes, arts & crafts, music and playground fun! The First through Eighth grade students can choose from the following options: Enrichment, Theater, Science, Wide World of Sports, Afternoon Academics and Fit Club camps.
