The History of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded January 16, 1920 at Howard University by five co-eds, Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Neal. The organization was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations - to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. These five women dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood. Today, the sorority consists of over 100,000 women in more than 800 chapters in the United States and abroad. The sorority's national and local programs include endowment of its National Educational Foundation, the Stork's Nest Prenatal Program, Z-Hope - an empowerment program that aims to enrich the mind, body and soul of target populations, and supporting multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliary groups have given un-totaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth provide scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change. Since its inception, the sorority has chronicled a number of firsts. For example, Zeta Phi Beta was the first Greek Letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948), to form adult and youth auxiliary groups, to centralize its operations in a National Headquarters, and to be constitutionally bound to a brother fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The History of the Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. The Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was chartered in September 1955. In 1962, the chapter organized the Zeta Amicae of Wilmington, and the New Castle County Stork’s Nest opened its doors in 2002. In an effort to further community outreach efforts, Zeta CAN! – The Zeta Community Action Network was born, and in 2006, the Katherine B. Ross Scholarship was added to the chapter’s education portfolio. For over 50 years, the chapter has given un-totaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth,

provide scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change. The membership is comprised of professional women from many walks of life. Chapter members hold Baccalaureate, Master’s, Doctoral and/or professional degrees in fields from Education, both secondary and higher, to finance, law, social work, corporate management and technology. This expertise allows the chapter to provide a myriad of service to the New Castle County area. Thus, the chapter continues to hold high the torch that was kindled at Howard University in Washington, DC on January 16, 1920. May the torch holding the light of Zeta burn eternally……

Zeta Amicae of Wilmington As early as 1940, graduate chapters of Zeta Phi Beta began to realize the importance of the prestige, good will and of cooperation women who, for various reasons, were not members of any Greek-letter organization. Under the administration of Soror Lullelia Harrison, the first Amicae chapter was organized in Omaha, Nebraska in 1947 making Zeta the first sorority in the National Pan-Hellenic Council to organize an auxiliary group. Zeta Amicae are affiliated through local graduate chapters. Today, these auxiliaries have rendered invaluable services to the sorority and their communities. They are located in areas wherever there are active chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Each local Amicae Auxiliary is a member of a state-wide Zeta Amicae Conference in which rules, regulations, policies and procedures apply to the state as a group. This structure is also applicable to Regional and National levels within the organization. These larger bodies provide an excellent forum for networking with Amicae from other auxiliary chapters, a chance to garner successful programming ideas, and stay current with your knowledge of information and activities on a broader scale. The ultimate value is that you develop relationships that last a lifetime. Amicae Auxiliaries conduct community service projects on an ongoing basis. Many times collaboration with Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter. In addition, they participate in special observances of the sorority, and conduct projects or programs related to the national programmatic thrusts. They are expected to participate in the activities that you help to plan and organize.

Members are expected to support the organization financially through their membership. The organization exists because its members are committed to advancing the principles, values and standards for which it purports. This support is tangibly demonstrated by members paying dues in a timely manner and through support of fund raising activities.

Youth Auxiliary Groups of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. The mission of the youth auxiliaries of Zeta Phi Bet Sorority, Inc, is to provide a carefully designed program of activities that will enhance youth members through mind, body, and spirit as they work within their various communities to help others. In order to provide age specific programming, our Youth Auxiliaries are divided into 3 age groups. Miss Blue Revue Debutante Mentor Program m ission is to foster the educational goals of college-bound young women. Miss Blue Revue is a comprehensive mentoring program, focusing on etiquette, community service, and college preparation. The goal of the R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue program is to provide young ladies with the opportunity to be involved in educational and personal growth activities that can open doors for them as they transition into womanhood. The program is open to young women who are sophomores/juniors attending high school in the state of Delaware during the 2011-

2012 school year. The R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue Debutante Program will culminate with a Debutante Ball held in the fall of 2012.The R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue Debutante Mentor Program is the capstone program of the youth auxiliary programs/clubs of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter. Each R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue program participant is assigned a mentor who is a member of Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter. The role of the mentor is a vital component of the R.O.Y.A.L. Miss Blue Revue Debutante Program, as the goal of the program is to provide mentor-ship to young ladies. History of Blue Revue Blue Revue or iginated in th e K appa Zeta Ch apter in 1933. Ch apter founder, Dr. Helen Wilson Johnson and charter member Mildred Davis initiated the first Blue Revue and then introduced the idea at the Sorority's 1933 national convention. The idea was adopted as a national program and implemented by chapters of the sorority across the country. Blue Revue’s purpose is twofold. Primarily, Blue Revue is a conduit to promote higher education through scholarship and other financial resources. Secondly, but just as important, Blue Revue was established to encourage and inspire young ladies to uphold the admirable ideals of finer womanhood as well as cultivate and put into practice acceptable ways of social behavior.

I remember the day that I first met you. I saw and felt a unique spirit in a beautiful little girl trying to fit in a world that was so unkind to the beauty that you possessed. Your beauty was being overshadowed by you because you did not see it yourself. The moment you stopped trying to be accepted by this world and started building your own world by working hard and learning how to study, your true aptitude began to show - a smart and beautiful Princess; and now everyone is standing in line to be in the world that you built filled with love, fun, and happiness .
