Regulatory Framework The system of standards, rules, and guidance for wayfinding as well as the bodies that produces, maintains and enforces them.
Survey View Maps are survey views of an area; they provide a two-dimensional representation of the physical world from the viewpoint of the map maker or surveyor.
Sustainable Transportation Sustainable transportation options reduce reliance on finite sources of energy and resources. These normally include walking, cycling, transit, and shared transportation services.
Tactile surfaces and Braille Raised lettering, relief maps, and Braille, which is a writing system using patterns of raised dots, can be used to assist people with blindness or visual impairments who have learned these systems.
Wayfinding The process of navigation assisted by our senses, decision-making skills, and memories, that builds our understanding of the world around us. • Standard Wayfinding: Primarily uses regulated signage to assist navigation of the state’s public
transportation network. Standard wayfinding is consistent, predictable, efficient, and effective.
• Enhanced Wayfinding: creatively builds from the foundation of standard wayfinding to offer greater opportunity to target a larger audience, meet wayfinding goals, and incorporate sponsor identity. Enhanced wayfinding is unique, targeted, flexible, effective, and conveys wayfinding information through use of multiple senses. • Community Wayfinding: A type of extended wayfinding that differs from traditional highway signs to reflect local character and identity under guidelines contained in Section 2D.50 of the MDMUTCD.
