California Water Service Group is proud to be named a Top Workplace in the Bay Area for the eighth consecutive year! It is an achievement that we do not take lightly, given the many businesses in the region.

hen we reflect on how we got here and have maintained this distinction throughout the years, it all boils down to the commitment we have made to our employees, customers, and communities. From the start, we have been dedicated to providing quality, service, and value. To our customers, this means delivering a safe, reliable, and high-quality water supply around the clock. To our communities, it means improving the quality of life in the areas we serve and supporting local organizations committed to doing the same thing. To our employees, this manifests in opportunities, empowerment, and competitive pay and benefit packages. We encourage our employees to grow and offer team members from across all parts of our organization to learn about roles outside of their jobs, which helps them make informed decisions about their career path with the company. We also offer tuition reimbursement and encourage employees to advance their educational pursuits. Not only do we empower our employees through professional development, but also through teamwork, a safe workplace, and transparent communication. We have also developed a peer-to-peer support network to help fellow employees who are going through a traumatic experience or crisis.

And, our benefits package supports work-life balance, immediate needs, and long-term goals, including competitive pay, personal time off, medical/dental/vision insurance, a 401(k) matching plan, pension, an employee assistance program, and more! We believe that when we take care of our employees, they will take care of our customers and the communities we serve. But don’t take our word for it; read what some of our employees have to say about being part of our company: • “I’m given the freedom to perform to the best of my ability. There is room to learn and explore new things. The company is willing to invest in tools that modernize and make procedures better.” • “I’m given room to grow and am treated respectfully. If any concerns arise, you’re not just heard, but are actually listened to, with your feelings being cared about. They trust you with making many decisions on your own, using your own judgment. They trust that you’ll do your job, and do it well.”

• “I have a wonderful boss who is supportive and very bright, who gives us just the right level of support. Additionally, the entire organization is very focused on our customers, being constructive members of the communities we serve, and consistently doing the right thing. Because of the corporate culture, I take great pride in working for Cal Water and truly believe that we are the best water utility in the country.” • “My job gives me the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives. I love helping customers with their issues. Water is somewhat a thankless career; however, it’s one of the most important in the country. We can’t live without it!” • “I consider myself lucky to be among a team of very nice people. Also, the job is very challenging technically, and there is a lot of room to learn new technologies and to advance our professional careers.” Advertorial content provided by California Water Service Group.

• “Working in the water industry is an important job. I love the fact that I play a role in providing something so essential for so many people. And to know that we do it very well adds to that feeling of pride.”

Seneca Family of Agencies 2019

As a Top Workplace, Seneca recognizes that our staff are our greatest resource! “[Being a Top Workplace] means that the efforts of Seneca staff all across the agency who bring so much commitment, compassion, and creativity to their work every day is being honored,” shares one of our Bay Area Program Directors. “It also means that we are recognizing that every child and family, especially those who have been underserved or pushed to the margins by systems in the past, deserve the best quality services and supports available, which at Seneca we call Unconditional Care.”

T

he mission of Seneca Family of Agencies (Seneca) is to help children and families through the most difficult times of their lives. Seneca was founded in 1985 from a belief that all youth are capable of success, belonging, and happiness when provided thoughtful supports that are responsive to their unique needs and experiences. Starting as a small residential and day treatment program for the Bay Area’s most struggling youth, we aimed to address the failure of public systems to adequately meet the needs of youth impacted by profound trauma, loss, and disability. Far too often these youth end up isolated from their families, peers, and communities, being moved between treatment settings that lacked the capacity to help them heal and thrive. Our agency’s founding commitment of providing Unconditional Care — doing whatever it takes to support youth’s success without the option of giving up — has driven our efforts for more than three decades.

Seneca’s impact as a 2018-19 Top Workplace ■ 97 staff received professional development scholarships ■ 76 staff were selected to participate in Seneca’s embedded graduate programs ■ 9 Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) ■ 4 Language Practice Groups for bilingual staff members ■ 98% of the adoptions that Seneca facilitates are successful and permanent ■ 10,601 students received whole-school interventions ■ 835 children served in foster care

“To have Seneca be recognized as a Top Workplace for the 5th year in a row further validates what I already know about our unwavering commitment to not only the children and families we support, but also to our incredibly talented staff,” shared Seneca’s Chief Advancement Officer, Nathaniel Foster. “This award fuels our dedication to provide the support and opportunities that our staff need to do the meaningful work that they do.”

Seneca Family of Agencies Stands Up For Family

O

n May 9, 2017, Raquelle and Javier Acosta took in their three nephews, ages 6, 10 & 12, when Raquelle’s sister had been arrested for drug possession. “All of a sudden I was faced with an overwhelming responsibility that I was truly not prepared for,” said Raquelle, who already had two children.

In the months that followed, the trauma the boys experienced began to manifest in their behavior. Not able to function in school, the boys struggled with bouts of violent behaviors and an inability to communicate.

“There came a time where I just broke down and wanted to give up. But that’s when we met Seneca Family of Agencies,” shared Raquelle. For the past 34 years, Seneca has helped thousands of children and their families find new beginnings. This happens because special people step forward and provide a loving home and family for children in need. Seneca provided the Acostas with family therapy, parent mentoring, and 24/7 crisis support. The children received intensive therapy that helped them work through their feelings of loss.

With Seneca’s support, the Acostas were able to overcome this difficult time. On November 9, 2018, Javier and Raquelle adopted their three nephews - officially becoming a forever family. Here at Seneca, we offer children and families a simple but profound promise: They will be supported every step of the way, no matter what challenges they face. When you stand with us, you are not only giving a child the gift of hope but also the opportunity to become a healthy, thriving adult.

Seneca Family of Agencies Empowers Families with Unconditional Support Seneca’s Professional Parents show an advanced ability to connect and support children and youth in need of special guidance and positive role models. Professional Parents work as team members with Seneca staff to provide Unconditional Care to one youth at a time for up to six months. With unwavering commitment, Professional Parents help children and youth transform their lives and move towards a positive future.

Brenda, Seneca Professional Parent “Seeing youth progress in your home is incredibly rewarding. There were many times we had to react to behaviors in a way that our youth wasn’t expecting — with love, patience and grace. Today, she’s no longer in our home but we remain connected to her. We have committed to practicing our belief that permanency doesn’t have to end once a youth leaves our home.”

Verlesha, Assistant Director of Bay Area Placement Programs “My favorite thing about my job is working with a team that has the same goals and values as I do. Our team is like a small family. We have built strong relationships with one another while fostering mutual respect and sharing common goals. We have learned how to move through difficult times and lean on one another. We uplift and encourage each other to be our best selves.”

Sondra, Seneca Professional Parent “Working through the process of becoming a Professional Parent proved to be thorough and very encouraging. Each staff member I met with presented themselves with professionalism and dedication that I have not often seen demonstrated. They are nothing short of wonderful and I marvel at the impact on my youth the collaboration affords. To sum it up, I could not be happier with my decision to become a Professional Parent.”

Top Workplaces Advantages

2019

Find out how these companies became a Top Workplace BY ANDY COFFARO

CORRESPONDENT

A

s Top Workplaces celebrates its 10-year anniversary, we thought it would be enlightening for this year’s winners to share their unique stories about what makes each of them such a fabulous place to work. This is the sixth consecutive year that Wind River Systems has been named a Top Workplace — a testament to the fact that the company fosters a fantastic work culture and provides employees with a great place to work. This ranges from offering a gym, fitness classes and massage therapists on-site to having dogs at work. Mountz Inc. is an ESOP and shares one-third of all profits with employees through a variety of programs. They also offer health and wellness programs that include daily team exercise, an on-site gym plus ongoing wellness, training and education. Provident Credit Union strives to keep their employees happy and healthy through comprehensive benefits, weekly yoga and tai-chi classes, an on-site gym, and summer holidays to allow employees to take half days on Fridays. All work at Proteus Digital Health is centered around three core values: quality, teamwork and leadership. With a unique team comprised of innovative engineers, data analysts, clinicians and other digital health pioneers, Proteus is creating a new category of pharmaceuticals to actively transform the health care industry. Gusto’s mission is to create a world where work empowers a better life, and they achieve this in part by serving customers with its people platform and creating a great workplace for employees. The company wants everybody to love work, and they succeed by finding alignment in motivations and values among its team.

Being included as a Top Workplace is a tremendous honor for UserTesting. For a company of its size, the opportunity to grow a career or take it in a completely new direction is very unique. The culture its employees helped create is what makes others want to join the company.

Mountz Inc.

The Soquel Creek Water District crew is a fun and active group. Many staff members are daily bike commuters, including the general manager, and they have a lunchtime walking group and a community coed softball team. On staff, you’ll find avid surfers, boaters, paddlers, anglers, mountain bikers, riders, hikers and runners.

As an organization, Harris & Associates develops and maintains employee trust by honoring a commitment to providing an exceptional place to do what they love and have fun doing it. It has been The Harris Way for over 40 years, which honors the fact that employees are all different people with different strengths but are on the same team. The iD Tech family is beyond thrilled to accept their ninth Top Workplace award. It’s a symbol that their year-round team is happy, healthy and deeply committed to maintaining the awesomeness that defines their work-life balance.

ACTenviro became a Top Workplace through a comprehensive approach to ensuring the best work environment for employees. Not only do they pride themselves in providing outstanding benefits, competitive compensation and employee perks, they also strive each year to improve these items. Being voted one of the best places to work in the Bay Area is a very important recognition to Oportun. It helps validate the company’s efforts to create an inclusive, diverse, engaged and motivated workforce that sees the value of their daily work and how they are making a positive difference in the lives of customers. 1st United Credit Union works hard to make the company a place where people are excited to come to work. Being named a Top Workplace year after year is validation that California Water Service Group is doing the right thing for employees. It shows that the company culture they have carefully cultivated is working and that their employees are satisfied, which in turn creates employees who will go the extra mile for customers and the company. For Loring Ward/Buckingham Strategic Wealth to be recognized as a Top Workplace would be exciting in any year, but it is particularly meaningful at this time as the organizations recently completed a merger more than doubling its size in the process. Rather than diluting what makes them a great place to work, the coming together of firms has only elevated the employee and client-first environment they’ve worked so hard to build.

Talent managers at RoseRyan Inc. enjoy using this honor for exposure and branding. They feel it gives the company real credibility with candidates in the finance and accounting community. It adds a nice pop to messaging with candidates — especially with people in the workforce who are in their 30s and 40s.

“Each member of the 49ers family takes so much pride in the franchise’s body of work on the field and in the community,” said San Francisco 49ers Vice President of Human Resources Harpreet Basran. “I’m proud of the culture that’s been built within the walls of Levi’s Stadium, and I’m honored to have the 49ers recognized for the fifth year in a row as a Top Workplace.”

Happy employees are the key to happy customers

S

age Intacct, the innovation and customer satisfaction leader in cloud ERP software, helps growing companies improve performance and make their finance teams more productive. Intacct is dedicated to employee happiness and success, because we know that fulfilled employees result in satisfied customers and partners.

For most organizations, one of the most tracked and discussed statistics is their customer satisfaction rate. Poor customer satisfaction, regardless of the cause, can have devastating consequences on a company’s ability to grow and profit — especially with the ubiquitous availability of online ratings systems and social media platforms that give an elevated voice to users and consumers who wish to express dissatisfaction. Companies often devote considerable time to increasing customer satisfaction rates, from improving product quality to implementing customer-driven features to refining customer service interactions. One company with a long track record of high customer satisfaction is Sage Intacct, a leader in cloud financial management software. Over 11,000 customers use Sage Intacct’s cloud-based accounting software products to automate complex processes and surface rich financial and operational insights. One of the key reasons for Sage Intacct’s success is that its management team learned early in its history that a high rate of employee satisfaction led to higher overall customer satisfaction. Sage Intacct has always had a strong management

team, with several members repeatedly earning industry recognition and leadership awards. Rob Reid, CEO of Intacct prior to its acquisition by Sage and now EVP and Managing Director of Sage Intacct, won a Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award honoring Top CEOs in 2018 — his second time making this prestigious list. Among the 770,000 companies reviewed on Glassdoor, the average CEO approval rating is 69 percent. Comparatively, Reid’s approval rating is among the highest at 98 percent. Reid, who still famously meets with each qualified candidate as part of the hiring process, discussed his leadership style in an interview with The New York Times. “If you create an environment that inspires people in the good times and bad, good people will figure out the right strategy and will do the right things from an execution perspective,” Reid stated. “I used to think strategy, execution and culture were a three-legged stool. Now I realize that if you create the best culture, the other two will follow. So we really look for team-oriented and results-driven people who want to contribute and make a difference.” “Sage Intacct has been built on the tenet that our organization’s success is tied to the development and satisfaction of our employees. Ensuring that each Sage Intacct employee has the tools and resources they need to succeed, and receives recognition for these achievements, is one of our top priorities,” said Reid. “We know if we have employees empowered to achieve success, it will support our overarching goal of superb customer satisfaction.”

At Sage Intacct, the focus on employee satisfaction is built into all aspects of the company and goes well beyond the standard perks found at many Silicon Valley companies. Ongoing training and career development opportunities ensure that employees can achieve their professional goals; a focus on wellness and a healthy work/life balance prevents stress and burnout and leads to employees who are happier, more focused, and more productive in both their personal and professional lives; and a commitment to hiring the right people fosters a collaborative environment where employees feel valued and stay engaged. Sage Intacct has consistently been recognized for its outstanding work environment. The company was recently included in the Bay Area News Group’s Top Workplaces in the Bay Area for 2019 list, marking the eighth consecutive year that Sage Intacct has garnered this award. Earlier this year, Fortune magazine and consulting firm Great Places to Work named Sage Intacct as one of the 2019 Best Workplaces in the Bay Area for the third consecutive year. Further evidence of Sage Intacct’s award-winning culture is its high employee retention rate, a notable achievement in the competitive Silicon Valley job market. For this growing company, putting the conscious effort into creating happy employees has definitely contributed to its goal of having happy customers.

Sage Intacct proud to be a Top Workplace for 9 years in a row

A

t Sage Intacct, the innovation and customer satisfaction leader in cloud financial management solutions, we consistently win awards for our workplace culture. Over the years, we have found that it is only possible to sustain a truly great corporate culture through innovative programs and a strong commitment from the top down. Our focus on employee satisfaction has been an integral part of the company culture since we were founded. From quarterly wellness challenges and teambuilding events to ongoing training and advancement opportunities, Sage Intacct has succeeded in creating an overall company culture that provides each employee with the encouragement and tools to achieve their goals. This has led to consistently high employee satisfaction ratings, as well as an employee retention rate that is uncommonly high among Silicon Valley companies. Recently, Sage Intacct received two awards for employee health and wellness — one of the biggest trends in measuring an employer’s commitment to its employees’ well-being. We were recognized as one of the 2018 Bay Area Healthiest Employers, an awards

program presented by the San Francisco Business Times and the Silicon Valley Business Journal to acknowledge organizations for their commitment to employee health with exceptional corporate wellness programs. We were also recognized by the National Association for Business Resources as one of the Nation’s Best & Brightest in Wellness for 2018, a program that honors organizations who celebrate quality and excellence in employee and worksite health. Sage Intacct is also known for taking a lead in innovative employment programs. Last year, we partnered with Path Forward, a nonprofit agency that is dedicated to helping experienced professionals re-enter the workforce after taking a break in their careers for caregiving. The program offers full-time, 16-week “returnship” programs for experienced professionals returning to the workforce. Of all the participating companies in the Bay Area, Sage Intacct had the highest number of returnships offered. With strong support from our executive team, we were able to place returnees in a variety of departments throughout our organization.

Advertorial content provided by Sage Intacct.

These and other initiatives are why Sage Intacct is consistently recognized for our outstanding work environment. Our recent inclusion in the Bay Area News Group’s Top Workplaces in the Bay Area for 2019 marks the ninth consecutive year Sage Intacct has been named to the list. Earlier this year, Fortune magazine and consulting firm Great Places to Work named Sage Intacct as one of the 2019 Best Workplaces in the Bay Area for the fourth consecutive year. In previous years, Sage Intacct has also been recognized as a Best Place to Work by Glassdoor, a Best Place to Work in North America by Best in Biz Awards, and as one of the country’s 50 Best Workplaces for Recent College Graduates by Great Place to Work and Fortune magazine. Sage Intacct is growing quickly, and we are seeking skilled, talented, and motivated people to join our team in key roles across the company. DESIGN YOUR CAREER WITH US Back in 1915 our founder, Willis Frost, started BKF based on the simple principle of taking pride in your work from start to finish. Today, we have built on that foundation, creating a firm where the values of hard-working, professional people are appreciated and where innovative ideas are encouraged and welcomed. BKF has helped shape the infrastructure of California – by participating as an integral partner in the development of numerous communities we serve and live in, we are proud that our legacy includes work on projects which have strengthened and enhanced the local fabric of each. It’s a gift to be able to say that we’ve been an important part of that local history… we don’t take that lightly.

BKF IS UNIQUE BECAUSE WE: 1. Foster entrepreneurial spirit where personal growth is reward based on aptitude, caring, and hard work…; many of our principals started at BKF as staff engineers... 2.

Balance our company size, as each group is small enough that we really get to know each other well and work collaboratively, yet large enough that we have the resources available to chase and win exciting work.

3.

Embrace new ideas and disdain the “it’s the way it’s always been done.” We recognize that we can all learn something from one another, at any level.

4.

Recognize staff members for their contributions, and offer numerous opportunities for personal growth.

5.

Value employees as our leaders truly believe that this results in a healthy workplace. Our high employee retention rate is a testament to this priority.

We also determine a list of special awards based on standout scores on specific survey statements, which are listed on the Special Awards page.

Employee survey We survey employees at participating employers using either paper surveys or an online survey application. Each of the statements has a positivity score. The positivity score on the Positivity page shows the overall percentage of positive responses for each statement. Responders rank our statements on a 7-point likert scale, ranging from Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree, so the score shown is the percentage of responders who answered Slightly Agree, Agree or Strongly Agree to each statement. Each of the statements has been tested to ensure it has a high correlation with how employees feel about their workplace, which is calculated by correlating the statement responses to employee engagement. The Statement Importance page lists the statements that were part of the survey.

Response requirements We require a response rate of at least 35 percent for employees based in the Bay Area. In addition, employers with 85 or fewer Bay Area employees must have at least 30 responders. We encourage employers to survey all employees, but large employers can choose to randomly sample with Bay Area employees. At least 500 employees must be included in the random sample for employers 2,500 or less employees. For those employers over 2,500 but less than 5,000 employees, we require 20 percent minimum distributed. For employers of 5,000 or more the minimum is 1,000 surveys distributed. The Activity page shows the total number of employees sent surveys and the total number of employees who responded.

s Top Workplaces enjoys its 10th anniversary, these winners remind us that there are 101 ways to provide an engaging and creative environment for employees. These companies also possess an original story that established the flourishing culture it enjoys today. Let’s learn a little bit about them.

Through its Aiming for the Stars program, Aimco recognizes team members who exemplify the company values of integrity, respect, collaboration, customer focus and performance culture. At weekly “standup” meetings, team members are acknowledged for outstanding customer service and community involvement. At the female-owned business ALOM Technologies, a collaborative working environment that focuses on employee satisfaction, diversity, inclusion and information sharing is championed. The company environment is performance-oriented yet fun and highly supportive, while emphasizing time off, wellness, and engaging company events. American Income Life maintains a mutually beneficial relationship with its team members. Management goes above and beyond to invest in its people to show a commitment to individual growth. As a result, the company develops motivated and invested leaders. In an effort to remain holiday neutral, Arena Solutions decorated its office with plush snowmen one December. They became a favorite of the team and visitors can find them adorning the office every holiday season as they delight with whimsical poses and unexpected antics. With new offices in Germany and Australia, Avi Networks Inc. continues to expand around the globe with its employee base crossing the 300-plus threshold. The company believes its people and culture are its most important asset and differentiator, and it provides a

BKF Engineers was founded in 1915 by Willis “Jack” Frost, and most managers and owners started their careers at the company right out of college. CD & Power was established by the outstanding diesel mechanic Charles Uischner. Recognizing that a diesel engine is at the heart of diesel generators, his dream was to make his company a leader in generator service, repair, sales and installation. Course Hero currently offers more than 7 million study materials from more than 11,000 schools, making them the biggest and best digital library for course-specific study resources.
