C

alifornia Water Service (Cal Water) is honored to be named a Top Workplace in the Bay Area for the sixth year in a row! Cal Water has the best employees in the industry. Our employees take great pride in providing reliable, high-quality water around the clock, and they are always willing to go the extra mile for our customers.

Hear what some of our employees have to say: •

[Cal Water] truly cares about doing the right thing for customer and employees. They go above and beyond what an employer should do and always strive to improve. This job helps me grow as a person. They show appreciation to employees.

At Cal Water, we believe in providing a supportive atmosphere for our employees and providing them with the tools they need to realize their potential and career goals. We know that an investment in our employees is an investment for the future success of our company.

My job challenges me to be successful, allows me to grow and develop, and gives me the commitment to teach others.

We have a great officer team that sets a clear vision for the future, fully engages the employees, and helps us to be our best.

I am encouraged and trusted to work independently. When problems occur, my manager and coworkers work together to solve problems regardless of fault.

[My company] constantly challenges me and offers the opportunity for me to keep growing professionally. [Yet], it gives me the worklife balance that I need.

I love my job because it fits who I am outside of work. I [oversee] all employees in our district. The variety of tasks keeps me challenged, and enables me to find creative ways to help everyone stay organized in their daily tasks.

I am surrounded by a supportive team. Management is supportive of ideas to improve programs. I am challenged in a healthy [manner], which makes the job interesting, but not overly stressful.

I love this company. There is a genuine feeling that you are cared for here at Cal Water.

At Cal Water, we believe that in order to fulfill our promise of quality, service, and value to our customers, communities, and stockholders, we must facilitate an environment for our employees where they are afforded a safe workplace, opportunities for professional development, transparent communication, and an experience where they feel valued. What makes working at Cal Water special? Our employee development program offers the chance for our employees to learn about roles outside of their own jobs, which helps them make educated decisions about their career path with the company. Our employees also have the opportunity to collaborate and solve challenges that affect all of our service areas throughout the state. These practices, along with a comprehensive benefits package, help keep retention rates at Cal Water high. Cal Water is also committed to making good things happen in our service areas, and our employees are part of making that positive difference in their local communities. Employees are encouraged to be involved in the community, both here and abroad. Whether it’s taking the time to raise money for a local charity or donating time to build a well for clean water in a developing country, our employees are connected to their communities at home and globally.

• [I enjoy] getting the chance to be a part of something meaningful and very important to the communities we serve.

Thank you for Naming Us a Top Workplace in the Bay Area! Success takes a team of talented and committed people who believe the work we do for our clients can make a real difference in their lives. Our people are driven by a simple purpose, to champion our clients’ goals with passion and integrity. Our spirit of service fosters employee engagement as well as client loyalty, making Schwab a special place to work.

During Schwab Volunteer Week in May 2017, Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz (center), president of Charles Schwab Foundation, with Schwab employees Jeri Ellison-Beauford and Kris Anest, Schwab’s 2017 Outstanding Community Service award winners, at San Francisco’s Boys & Girls Club of Visitacion Valley. A

t Schwab, we believe in the power of investing, which helps turn earners into owners. Great outcomes in any aspect of life require engagement and we believe investing can be truly transformative when people actively engage and work collaboratively with the right investment services firm. Since day one, we’ve helped our clients take ownership of their financial futures. That means seeing the world through their eyes and keeping that perspective at the heart of everything we do.

Schwab’s culture of service extends beyond its clients into local communities. During the company’s annual Volunteer Week in May 2017, Schwab volunteers prepare and serve a meal at St. Anthony Foundation, whose mission is to feed, heal, shelter, clothe, and lift the spirits of those in need. (0517-7GZV) (Photo by Orange Photography)

This perspective guides our actions and behaviors as a company. It’s how we disrupt the status quo on behalf of our clients – the individual investors, independent advisors, employees and others we serve – and how we challenge long-held assumptions about products, services and solutions.

Life at Schwab is inclusive – a place where people with different interests and different backgrounds can work together in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. We are a driven team, dedicated to building and maintaining a dynamic organization and culture, in a team-oriented, collegial environment, that reflects the individual strengths of every person who is part of the company. Through diversity we gain a wider range of perspectives and experiences, which benefits everyone and helps us see through clients’ eyes. We are committed to the health and well-being of our team members, their families, and the communities in which we live and work. Being recognized as a great place to work is very important to us, and we are very proud to again be named a Bay Area Top Workplace – for the fifth year in a row. We are also proud to have received the Gallup Great Workplace Award for five consecutive years, to have been recognized as a Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality (100% rating on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index since 2004), and to be recognized as one of the FORTUNE “World’s Most Admired Companies®” 2016.

Intacct is dedicated to employee happiness and success, because we know that fulfilled employees result in satisfied customers and partners.

Intacct is growing and innovating quickly, and we are actively recruiting great people to join our team. (Once you join, you won’t want to leave!) Fortune magazine and Great Place to Work recently named Intacct one of the Bay Area’s Best Workplaces. This award is just the most recent in a long line of accolades that provide ongoing validation of Intacct’s commitment to employee satisfaction. Kidder Mathews recently formed a committee charged with managing the Kidder Mathews Foundation. Its mission is to direct and encourage strategic and charitable giving by both the corporation and employees. The foundation supports underprivileged members of the communities in the areas of basic needs and education. The NVIDIA Foundation accelerates solutions to the world’s most pressing issues in health and education. They leverage employees, partners, technology and financial resources to advance the fight against cancer and to help youth excel in learning. Moreover, Project Inspire is a large-scale community service event held each year in place of a holiday party. In its Santa Clara headquarters, 1,650 employees, family, friends and community members come together over two days to transform a local school or other nonprofit organization. Real-Time Innovations hosts three annual charity events a year and gives employees the option to contribute to them. They have a backpack drive, which provides a backpack and school supplies to underprivileged children. Their Family Giving Tree gives gifts to children

that would otherwise not receive them during the holidays. They also work with the Second Harvest Food Bank drive in an effort to help end local hunger. Doing its part to give back to the community, RiseSmart Inc. participates in events and raises funds for local charities that include Second Harvest Food Bank, Family Supportive Housing, The Giving Tree, Hire Hope and Freedom House. ABOUT THE TOP WORKPLACES 2017 SURVEY

Provided by WorkplaceDynamics, who conducted the Bay Area Top Workplaces 2017 project. OUTREACH WorkplaceDynamics reaches out to employers with at least 40 employees in the Bay Area to participate. We use a combination of print & online ads, and direct outreach to employers using direct marketing lists (e.g. infoUSA).

EMPLOYEE SURVEY We survey employees at participating employers using either paper surveys or an online survey application. Each of the statements has a positivity score. The positivity score on the Positivity page shows the overall percentage of positive responses for each statement. Responders rank our statements on a 7 point likert scale, ranging from ‘Strongly Disagree’ to ‘Strongly Agree,’ so the score shown is the percentage of responders who answered ‘Slightly Agree,’ ‘Agree’ or ‘Strongly Agree’ to each statement. Each of the statements has been tested to ensure it has a high correlation with how employees feel about their workplace, which is calculated by correlating the statement responses to a control question which asks each employee to rate their workplace on a scale of zero to 99. The Statement Importance page lists the statements that were part of the survey.

RESPONSE REQUIREMENTS We require a response rate of at least 35 percent for employees based in the Bay Area. In addition, employers with 85 or fewer Bay Area employees must have at least 30 responders. We encourage employers to survey all employees, but large employers can choose to randomly sample their Bay Area employees. At least 500 employees must be included in the random sample for employers 2,500 or less. For those employers over 2,500 but less than 5,000 employees, we require 20 percent minimum distributed. For employers 5,000 or more the minimum is 1,000 surveys distributed.

TESTING FOR QUESTIONABLE RESULTS After the survey is complete, we first run a series of statistical tests to look for any questionable results. We disqualify a small number of employers based on these tests. As the effectiveness of these tests depends on employers not being aware of them, we do not publish the details.

SELECTION OF TOP WORKPLACES We categorize the employers into size bands because smaller employers tend to score higher than midsize employers, and midsize employers tend to score higher than large employers. We then rank the employers within their size band based solely on the employee responses to the survey statements. The top employers in each size band are then selected as the Top Workplaces in the Bay Area for 2017 and listed on the Top Workplaces Summary page. We also determine a list of special awards based on standout scores on specific survey statements, which are listed on the Special Awards page.

INTERESTING FACTS

Bay Area Top Workplaces are fascinating, unique and downright fun places to be BY ANDY COFFARO

CORRESPONDENT

H

alloween costume parties, cooking classes, Mardi Gras bashes complete with a contortionist and “Jeans Week” are just a few of the fun and quirky things that forward-thinking Bay Area companies are doing right now to lure some of the top talent from around the globe — and keep their current employees happy. Some Top Workplace winners have been contributing locally since 1934, and others are celebrating 25 years of becoming an employee-owned company. And while the products and services they provide might be vastly different, one thing is for certain: These Top Workplaces are some of the coolest and most enjoyable environments to work at in the entire Bay Area. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, ALOM Technologies is a female-owned business and global supply-chain management leader. On the first Friday of every October, the company opens its door to students for guided tours to help demonstrate the many career opportunities in the manufacturing industry. Arena Solutions secured its first office space in 2000 in what can only be called a truly one-of-a-kind location. The company leased a vacated flower shop inside a Mountain View strip mall. When they needed to describe the location to visitors, the company would say, “We’re between the Laundromat and convenience store.” They are now headquartered inside a Foster City lakefront office with gorgeous views of the San Francisco Bay Area skyline. One company that knows how to celebrate in style is AVer Information Inc. Americas. The visualcollaboration solution gurus recently held a Mardi Grasthemed party complete with a contortionist, 9-foot stilt walker and a vast array of casino tables.

California Water Service Group

California Water Service Group was there when a community needed it most. When the Oroville and Marysville service areas were impacted by the Oroville Dam spillway emergency in February, the company was there to help. The employees not only assisted the Oroville and Marysville teams as adjustments were being made to the water system pre-evacuation, they also helped raise the spirits of evacuees who stayed in temporary homes in nearby Chico. The company passed out water, Valentine’s Day candy and even treated hundreds of displaced residents to a movie. Arena Solutions

Self-described as “quirky,” Bolt Threads likes to hand out animal-themed awards to recognize top performers at its all-hands meetings. The team of engineers, scientists and apparel experts dedicate their days to crafting renewable fibers that take inspiration from spider silk. The sustainable fibers are then used for high-performance textiles and cutting-edge consumer products.

A company working diligently to close the gender gap in the technology sector is GoDaddy. The company experienced a 25 percent growth in both female technical interns and technical hires by going from 14 percent in 2016 to 39 percent this year. MuleSoft is doing its part to close the technology sector’s gender gap by encouraging young girls to pursue their passion for coding. To help support girls

A third-generation family-owned hardware store, Hassett Ace Hardware has weathered the ever-changing landscape of the Bay Area to serve customers since 1957. Much of the company’s magic resides in its open-door policy that encourages employees to share thoughts and ideas. When it comes to safety, J&J Air Conditioning Inc. takes it very seriously. Field personnel receive $50 per employee in the winning department after 26 weeks of safe driving. When service departments reach 52 weeks, each receives $100 cash. Part of the company’s success is due to biweekly and quarterly safety meetings.

When it comes to fun fall festivities, The ABD Team enjoys throwing Halloween parties complete with costume contests and pumpkin-carving competitions. No matter how busy things get during the holiday season, the company always makes time to kick off this special time of year with a festive bowling party. LESSONS FROM THE TOP

5 keys to a better workplace BY DOUG CLAFFEY

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER WORKPLACEDYNAMICS

W

hat distinguishes a Top Workplace from an average one? The truth is, there’s no single practice, no onesize-fits-all solution for achieving great results. But there are common qualities of success you should be able to identify in every company.

We know from our decade of research it’s not perks or “coolness” that makes the difference. The best employers carefully craft a positive workplace culture. We also know these organizations on the Bay Area News Group’s list of Top Workplaces for 2017 share a common foundation that supports a healthy culture — and employee engagement. Here are five key lessons:

1 2

PEOPLE REALLY ARE THE GREATEST ASSET: It goes beyond lip service. It’s a core principle that’s brought to life every day, with leadership putting employees at the center of their thinking. Done right, the feeling is returned: Employees consistently tell us that a sense of appreciation and confidence in leadership are among the most important factors for their workplace satisfaction. LEADERS LISTEN: The best leaders listen to the feedback provided by employees both formally and informally. While some leaders might dwell on the inherent risks of giving employees a voice, leaders at Top Workplaces are clued in to their team’s challenges and use this knowledge in decision-making. This builds a sense of commitment and accountability.

3 4

EVERYONE IS IN THE LOOP: It’s difficult to be fully committed if you’re kept in the dark. Employees want to be well-informed. Leaders in Top Workplaces recognize this. They’re committed to sharing information as much — and as often — as they can. And they don’t just share the happy news. Organizations that fail to communicate with staff on a regular basis, substantively, will leave an information void. That gap will be filled quickly with rumors and speculation. LIVE WITH A PURPOSE: Employees want to feel their work contributes to something meaningful. Effective leaders deliver an inspiring vision, which the entire team connects with day to day. In 2016, among the top 10 percent of companies we surveyed nationwide, 96 percent of employees reported feeling motivated. Compare that to the bottom 10 percent of organizations (which most closely represent a “typical” workforce), where just 62 percent of employees felt motivated. This 34 percentagepoint gap represents a massive drop in productivity. Motivation matters.

5

BUILD COMMUNITY: Neuroscience teaches us the importance people place on feeling accepted and safe in their “tribe.” It helps them stay focused and contributes to success. In forging productive employee experiences, Top Workplaces care about building community. They hold regular, purposeful events that foster a sense of belonging. That sense of appreciation also keeps employees connected. We see it in the WorkplaceDynamics survey comments, like this one from an employee at Bolt Threads: “I work with pretty amazing people in a teamwork environment. I feel like I have a purpose, and my skills are useful.” The best workplaces always look to improve. After all, it’s a journey, not a destination. Even top-ranked companies will find things to work on in a process of continuous improvement. If done right, employees will know their workplace is special. Employers shouldn’t be shy asking for extra effort in return. Ensure staff remains active in the ongoing success of the organization — with all the necessary accountability. And remember to celebrate along the way. TWP
