California Water Service Group (Cal Water) is Proud to Be Named a Top Workplace in the Bay Area for the Fifth Year in a Row Now!

A

t Cal Water, we believe that in order to fulfill our promise of quality, service, and value to our customers, communities, stockholders, and — of course — employees, we must empower employees through teamwork, professional development, a safe workplace, and transparent communication. Because, after all, our employees are our greatest advocates. What makes working at Cal Water special? Our employees have the opportunity to collaborate and solve challenges that affect all of our service areas throughout the state. Plus, employee development is a key factor in retention at Cal Water, as people are consistently offered the chance to learn about roles outside of their own jobs, which helps them make educated decisions about their career path with the company. Employees are also encouraged to be involved in the community, both here and abroad. More than being part of a team that supplies a reliable supply of high-quality water, it’s important to our people to be connected in the many communities in which they serve and help others who don’t have access to clean water like we do. Whether it’s taking the time to raise money for a local charity or donating time to build a well for clean water in Guatemala, our employees are connected to their communities at home and globally.

Hear what some of our employees have to say: “Cal Water has provided for my family and me for many years, and there is simply no better place to work. Every employee at Cal Water has an opportunity to grow and advance within the company. Everything I have I owe to Cal Water, and I’m truly blessed to be an employee.” “Our customers trust us because we will always do the right thing by putting their health and safety first. In addition, [the company] helps employees reach their highest potential by developing Cal Water’s future leaders. It’s an honor, and I’m grateful for the opportunity!” “California Water Service has provided me opportunities to learn skills which enable me to grow, not only in my professional career but also in my personal life. At Cal Water, we utilize well thought-out processes in order to achieve success for our efforts. We are all treated fairly, ethically, and respectfully. We are provided an atmosphere which enables us to excel and are provided the tools to do so.”

“I am valued for my experience and hard work. My supervisor appreciates my input and works with whatever needs or circumstances arise.” “I feel part of a team, and what we do is very important – delivering safe and reliable drinking water. I enjoy being a part of a company that encourages community involvement and personal growth.” “I have a supervisor who cares about my development as an employee, but also as a person. My supervisor supports me and wants to help me reach my goals. The people I work with are genuinely good people. I am able to effect change for the good of the company, and my ideas are heard.” “I work for a company that actually cares about our customers and is willing to do whatever it takes to provide a high level of service.” “My manager encourages me to grow and improve, while giving me the flexibility I need to learn new things and make important decisions.”

What it takes to be a TOP WORKPLACE

2016

California Water Service Group

By Carole Lucido Correspondent

I

t’s that time of year again, your chance to get a glimpse of what it’s like to work at the top companies in the greater Bay Area. This year the list of the Bay Area’s Top 100 Workplaces includes software makers, financial services firms, utilities, non-profits, engineering firms, medical technology developers, retailers, law firms, and others. A common thread runs through the way these top employers have built their businesses. They have built corporate cultures that make their employees a priority. Many have unusual rewards, like Bolt Threads, a company that creates renewable materials, that rewards its employees with billiard competitions, gingerbread house challenges and a spelling bee. Some companies foster an environment that encourages personal growth, like California Water Service Group, established 91 years ago. Then there are companies that embrace the notion of experimenting with new and powerful alternatives to the standard ways of doing business, as does Cohesity, a Santa Clara-based start-up.

Cohesity

The concept was summed up by Alom Technologies, a part of the Top Bay Area Workplace list for the third time.” We care, and our employees and clients know we care. We care about the little things so they don’t become big things.” President and CEO Hannah Kain said, “Our culture is built on a very solid foundation of inclusion and respect. The voice and opinion of every employee matters.”

they are part of something meaningful. On the Top Workplace list for six years straight, employees share “a passion for helping patients and their loved ones,” and they “care for them and about them as if they were our own families.” The company uses the data gathered by the Top Workplace survey to improve and strengthen their culture of empathy, connectedness and excellence in patient care.

at 150+ prestigious campuses across the country. Employees are rewarded with generous PTO, team building events, monthly celebrations and quarterly Shark Tank meetings in which employees pitch innovative ideas directly to the CEO.

At the Del Grande Dealer Group, the secret to being a Top Workplace is all about having happy employees and ultimately happy customers. To encourage health and wellness, the company provides healthy meal options at events and training classes, hosts monthly seminars on topics from stress management to better sleep, and even offers free flu shots and health screenings. Ascent is a staffing and workforce management company that applies the same promise to its customers and to its employees. They “listen, connect and deliver” exceptional value for Fortune 1000 companies and their own employees alike. Part of GoDaddy’s motivation for excellence comes from its customers, many of whom are entrepreneurs driven by their passions. GoDaddy works to instill that same sense of entrepreneurship, ownership and ambition to succeed in its employees by giving them the support and resources they need to learn along with the space to create and innovate.

Kids’ Country operates before and after-school childcare programs at 13 elementary schools in the San Ramon Valley School District. Employees are respected and challenged to make an impact on the children they serve and to help them grow into who they are meant to be. OneLogin, a company that brings enterprise solutions to the world’s highest high-tech firms, believes in building strong relationships between its teams at quarterly off-site meetings that have taken the form of classes in cooking, silk screening, and microbrewing; sailing trips, go-kart races, and trips to mountain resorts. The company also hosts two extravagant parties each year. “We believe excellence comes from empowering our people with the tools they need, the space to have a voice and autonomy to solve problems in new ways.”

With four years on the Top Workplace list and four familyowned stores in the Bay Area, Hassett Ace Hardware made a choice to focus on employees several years ago. They set clear expectations for upholding the company’s core values of hard work, clarity and consistency. The result is a happy, positive culture within its stores that produces happy employees and happy customers.

PernixData prioritizes its employees by offering top-flight amenities like free catered lunches twice a week, free gym access, full coverage medical plans, on-site ping-pong and laser tag, as well as classes in yoga, meditation, and controlled breathing. Team building events exercise both the mind and body with activities like frisbee, bowling, boat rides, and more. Community Involvement

Community service runs the gamut By Daphne O’Neal Correspondent

E

very company has its own identity, its culture, its customs, its internal standards. But at the heart of any organization is its people. And those people need to feel a sense of purpose in their work, as well as a connection to the corporation as an entity. Employees who participate in volunteer community support programs feel more positive about their companies, according to an LBG Associates survey. They also tend to feel more engaged, even inspired, studies show. Such programs have been demonstrated not only to foster a sense of cohesion but to positively impact productivity. “Organizations are realizing that if you give employees the opportunity to give back, they’ll have a renewed appreciation for the importance of their jobs,” according to Causecast.com. Consequently, for the forward-thinking organization, supporting the community is a win-win-win. In the Bay Area, firms are coming up with ever more interesting ways to serve the wider world and at the same time nourish that allimportant sense of unity. Read on…. When CEO Christopher Cabrera founded Xactly Corporation in 2005, one of the first things he did was start a company philanthropic organization, XactlyOne. The employee-run organization arranges volunteer opportunities and encourages team members to donate their time and talents in their local neighborhoods. Over 20 percent of Xactly’s employees serve on its XactlyOne committee and many more participate in various events. The company provides all employees with three days’ paid time off to volunteer in the community. Xactly is also part of the Pledge 1% Foundation. While Collaborative Solutions focuses on moving clients to the cloud, its demonstrated dedication to community service helps it keep its feet on the ground. The firm actively encourages employees to “give back” to charities in their respective communities. The company has a longstanding commitment to autism research and treatment and sponsors the annual Walk Now for Autism event, which is hosted by AutismSpeaks, the nation's largest autism science and

Crowdsourced learning platform creator Course Hero, Inc. doesn’t feel its core business — providing a massive library of course-specific study resources — is enough. The concern has just begun donating free tutoring to college students — to the tune of $1 million! It also inspires college students across the U.S. to give in kind to Books for Africa. t Schwab, we believe in the power of investing, which helps turn earners into owners. Great outcomes in any aspect of life require engagement and we believe investing can be truly transformative when investors actively engage and when they work collaboratively with the right financial provider. Since day one, we’ve helped our clients take ownership of their financial futures. That means seeing the world through their eyes and keeping that perspective at the heart of everything we do. This perspective guides our actions and behaviors as a company. It’s how we disrupt the status quo on behalf of our clients – the individual investors, independent advisors, employees and others we serve – and how we challenge long-held assumptions about products, services and solutions. Success takes a team of talented and committed people that believe the work we do for our clients can make a real difference in their lives. Our people are driven by a simple purpose, to champion our clients’ goals with passion and integrity. Our spirit of service fosters employee engagement as well as client loyalty, making Schwab a special place to work. Life at Schwab is inclusive – a place where people with different interests and different backgrounds can work together in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. We are a driven team, dedicated to building and maintaining a dynamic organization and culture, in a team-oriented, collegial environment, reflecting the individual strengths of every person who is part of the company. Through diversity we gain a wider range of perspectives and experiences, which benefits everyone and helps us see through clients’ eyes.

Schwab’s spirit of service extends beyond its clients into local communities. During the company’s annual Volunteer Week in May 2016, Schwab volunteers prepare food at the SF-Marin Food Bank, whose mission is to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin. (Photo by Katelyn Tucker, Orange Photography)

Being recognized as a great place to work is very important to us, and we are very proud to again be named a Bay Area Top Workplace – for the fourth year in a row. We are also proud to have received the Gallup Great Workplace Award for four consecutive years, to have been recognized as a Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality (100% rating on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index since 2004), and to be recognized as one of Fortune’s Top 50 Most Admired Companies for 2016.

ELS Architecture & Urban Design

Principals at ELS Architecture and Urban Design proffer a significant amount of their time in the initial stages of accepted pro bono projects. Boasting a staff with strong ties to UC Berkeley, the firm volunteers time and design services to promote good urban design and thoughtful development throughout the city. In 2015, ELS participated in the Petchitecture fundraiser for PAWS, a non-profit that helps low-income seniors and people living with HIV/AIDS keep their pets in the home. GoDaddy, despite its happy-go-lucky public image, takes community support seriously. In addition to grants and event based sponsorships, the company donates products and services to nonprofit partners. Donation matching and micro lending programs encourage employees to get into the giving spirit. And the firm buttresses its volunteer time off program by offering $1,000 to a charity on behalf of any employee who donates more than 30 hours in a year. Even customers can get in on the act by rounding any purchase amount up to the nearest dollar and donating the difference to charity. Veracyte Inc. is all too keenly aware of need in the surrounding area. “Hunger is a big issue for our neighbors and we wanted to help in a hands-on way,” the company relates. Its employees answered the call by volunteering at local food banks in 2015 and 2016. They also boxed food packages to be distributed to Seniors in local counties. KeyPoint Credit Union fulfills its community commitment

by offering financial literacy courses at local schools and colleges. The organization also provides onsite instruction about finance-related careers.

NVIDIA Corporation

The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District — in addition to its central mission — works with the Tri-Valley Education Collaborative to help integrate in-school education with work-based learning opportunities. Recently, high school engineering students participated in “Seniors Helping Seniors,” designing, engineering and building customized tools to support local senior citizens. MOC Insurance Services has expressed its drive to serve by supporting the Mill Valley Film Festival for the last 20 years. The festival presents international features, documentaries, shorts and children's films. NVIDIA Corporation is not to be outdone when it comes to community support. After nine years, its Project Inspire has evolved into a two-day effort that includes 1,500 company volunteers. Employees have made over community farms, restored historical parks, and revamped high-need schools across Silicon Valley. The company has also donated nearly $3 million to support six area schools. In offices around the globe and in lieu of a holiday party, NVIDIANs and their friends and families come together each year to restore local community resources. And, to students from around the world, NVIDIA’s internship program provides

meaningful career experience. Students work on real projects side by side with some of the industry’s brightest minds. RoseRyan delivers the same energy and enthusiasm to the community as it does to its vaunted client list! Holiday time for employees means volunteering as a group at Second Harvest Food Bank. About the Top Workplaces

2016 SURVEY

Provided by WorkplaceDynamics, who conducted the Top Workplaces Bay Area 2016 project.

OUTREACH

RESPONSE REQUIREMENTS

Beginning in December, the Bay Area News Group ran articles and advertisements encouraging people to nominate companies as Top Workplaces. Our research partner, Philadelphia-based WorkplaceDynamics, invited employers with at least 40 employees in the Bay Area to participate in the program. The organization could be public, private, nonprofit, or governmental. WorkplaceDynamics invited 4,357 workplaces to participate, and 148 agreed to be surveyed. The surveyed firms employ 38,879 people in the Bay Area. Of those employees who received questionnaires, 24,475 responded.

A response rate of at least 35 percent is required for employees based in the Bay Area. In addition, employers with 85 or fewer Bay Area employees must have at least 30 responders.

EMPLOYEE SURVEY WorkplaceDynamics surveyed employees at participating organizations using either paper surveys or an online survey application. Each of the statements have a positivity score. Responders rank statements on a 7 point Likert scale, ranging from “Strongly Disagree” to “Strongly Agree,” so the score shown is the percentage of responders who answered “Slightly Agree,” “Agree” or “Strongly Agree” to each statement. Each of the statements has been tested to ensure it has a high correlation with how employees feel about their workplace. This is calculated by correlating the statement responses to a control question which asks each employee to rate their workplace on a scale of zero to 99. The employee survey seeks responses from 24 statements covering seven factors: Alignment, Effectiveness, Connection, Leadership, My Manager, Engagement (loyalty, motivation, and referral) and The Basics (pay, benefits, training, work/life balance).

TESTING FOR QUESTIONABLE RESULTS After the survey is complete, WorkplaceDynamics runs a series of statistical tests to look for any questionable results. It sometimes disqualifies a small number of employers based on these tests.

SELECTION OF TOP WORKPLACES WorkplaceDynamics categorizes the employers into size bands because smaller employers tend to score higher than midsize employers, and midsize employers tend to score higher than large employers. Employers are ranked within their size band based solely on the employee responses to the survey statements. The top employers in each size band are then selected as the Top Workplaces in the Bay Area for 2016. Why is a particular employer not on the list? Perhaps the company took the survey and scored too low. It might have been disqualified. Or, it might have chosen not to participate. Nominations are open for 2017 at www.bayareanewsgroup.com/ nominate.

Health & Wellness

Work-life balance plus health and welfare By Daphne O’Neal Correspondent

K

eeping employees healthy bolsters the bottom line. But wellness — well, it can be catching. According to the Centers for Disease Control, studies show programs that tend to mind, body and soul can result in improved work team cohesion and a sense of “pride, trust and respect” among employees. Top Bay Area workplaces seem to have accepted this wisdom and have fully integrated wellness offerings into broader benefits programs. Of course, one person’s wellness activity might be another’s form of torture. Finding the right balance of activities and events for each and every employee can reap rewards that ripple through an organization. Interesting Facts Did you know... Bay Area Workplaces share

S

their unique and fascinating successes

ometimes, what’s unique about a company has nothing to do with the products it creates or the services it provides. With competition for quality job candidates ratcheting ever upward, it’s the identifiable quirks — the “warm and fuzzy” factors about a firm that can attract talent and enhance the public profile. With its notable penchant for iconoclasm and independence of thought, the Bay Area has no shortage of offbeat internal practices, making life more fun for employees and granting the surrounding community a peculiar point of pride. Founded to develop sustainable fibers to eschew reliance on petroleum-based polymers, Bolt Threads is also pushing the envelope in the area of employee motivation. Activities include a company spelling bee, a gingerbread house design competition, billiards competitions, and an internal Star Wars film festival to celebrate the latest release. “Each member of our team goes through an interactive course on leadership and communication where they learn to most effectively express themselves and understand others,” the company reports. A materials science / fashion lecture series, a Listserv to elicit “cute and thought-provoking ideas,” and animalthemed, bimonthly all-company meetings round out the novel list. California Water Service Group provides a life-sustaining, finite natural resource, and as such, has historically operated using sound environmental practices. Today, the firm plans to continue providing affordable water and wastewater services by focusing on water quality and reliability, conservation, and efficient operations.

Profitable since its inception, Campaign Monitor acts to foster kindness, happiness and health among employees. Taking time away from work for any reason has forever been at the discretion of employees and the team regularly celebrates personal and work successes with the same enthusiasm.

Clari keeps staffers motivated by offering “moving one-on-one” meetings (walking, running, or biking); team hikes and sports and game tournaments (badminton, ping pong). At annual active offsites, the entire company might participate in an overnight retreat that begins with a 15-mile hike. CD & Power prides itself on nurturing employee growth. Which just may explain the company’s 86 percent non-management employee retention rate! What’s more, founder Charles Uischner’s daughter Jill Collaro now runs the company. Hassett Ace Hardware terms itself a third-generation “hardware family.” The award-winning retailer’s staff includes several artists and musicians. No wonder, as its core values include integrity, innovative thinking, respect for others, and accountability, among other factors. iD Tech proffers to its trusty staffers an epic ugly sweater competition, gaming tournaments, corn hole competitions, and an in-house version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, where an employee won $1,000.

Our Board of Trustees, District and site leaders, and every employee, work in tandem to create an environment that enables our students to reach their full potential. We are living proof that a career devoted to public education can be fun, challenging, rewarding and truly fulfilling.

In June 2016, the LVJUSD passed a General Obligation Facilities Bond which will upgrade and modernize our school facilities, and incorporate enhancements to our technology infrastructure.

Livermore’s high schools are home to premier specialized programs including the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, Biotechnology Pathway, Culinary Arts and Green Engineering Academies. High competition athletic teams and a range of service and activity clubs provide engaging extracurricular opportunities.

Livermore is an arts-rich community. Our students develop and fine-tune their visual and performing arts skills, express their creativity and showcase their talents at the local, regional and national level.
