California Water Service Group reaches a decade of recognition as a top Bay Area employer

T

his year marks 10 consecutive years of California Water Service Group being named a Top Workplace in the Bay Area by the Bay Area News Group. It is an honor to be recognized year after year, as we remain committed to always doing the right thing for our customers, communities, employees and stockholders.

With the emergence of the coronavirus, this past year tested all employers. Within a matter of days, state and local regulations were put into place, changing how all businesses operate. During this trying time, our essential workers stayed committed to our customers and communities, ensuring they would have the water they needed for drinking, cooking, handwashing, and other important needs to stay healthy and safe. We were just as committed to our team members as they were to our customers, and went the extra mile to protect our employees by introducing new safety protocols and benefits. To help stop the spread, we established staggered shifts, employee “pod” units, and did daily screening and health checks. Further, we provided employees with the appropriate personal protective equipment, extra hand sanitizer, as well as cleaning stations in addition to increased cleanings of all our facilities. Because we knew that communication was critical to ensuring our workforce felt safe, we held enterprise-wide calls to keep employees updated about the status of the pandemic, explain our response, and offer guidance from outside experts.

We also offered 15 additional days of sick time for COVID-19 matters, such as illness, quarantine, highrisk factors, or child care/caregiving, even before similar accommodations were required by the state. We also recognized those employees who reported to work each and every day through the pandemic, and stayed healthy, with the opportunity to earn additional paid time off. While taking care of employees’ physical well-being was the top priority, we also worked to keep morale high. During the nationwide toilet paper shortage, we secured enough supply to provide industrial-size rolls to all of our employees. Children of our employees were sent a gift to acknowledge their parents’ sacrifice being away from home as an essential worker, critical in the fight against COVID-19. And, a newsletter full of uplifting content — with submissions by fellow co-workers — was created to lift employees’ spirits. But, even outside of the pandemic, California Water Service Group is a great place to work. We offer a comprehensive compensation package including 401(k) matching, competitive wages, health care, family college scholarships, a pension, and more. We help our employees reach their career goals through tuition reimbursement, industry training, and developmental opportunities. And, we listen to what they have to say. Our employees work crossfunctionally, collaborating and solving challenges that affect all of our service areas. This helps enhance employees’ overall knowledge and expertise and shows their input matters.

Being named a Top Workplace for 10 years in a row is an honor, and not one that we take lightly. You have heard why the company thinks California Water Service Group is a great place to work, but don’t take our word for it. Here is what our employees have to say: • “The company allows me to take training and improve my technical skills in order to excel in my job. They listen to my ideas and respect my views. They trust me to make important decisions and appreciate that I am a reliable source.” • “California Water Service (Group) is the Cadillac of water companies—there is no better one out there.” • “At California Water Service (Group), they value each employee. They show you they care by providing wonderful benefits, stock options, high-level pay, and the opportunity to advance. In addition, they offer education and leadership training.” • “We have multiple opportunities to share our thoughts with management from internal calls, to suggestion boxes, to team lunches, etc. The opportunities to share different points of view are too numerous to document.” • “When the pandemic hit, upper management went above and beyond to come together as a team to inform employees of COVID-19. Our company also secured and provided PPE and even supplied us all with toilet paper. They went out of their way to make sure our mental health was being addressed too.”

Seneca’s Todo Por Mi Familia provides mental health services and support to children and families separated at the U.S. border

I

magine starting a perilous journey with your family with nothing but the clothes on your back, your child’s hand clutched in your own and the hope of a better life. You reach the starting point of this “better life” only to have your child taken from you, and you are not reunited with your child for months. Even if you do eventually end up together, your family has experienced extensive trauma from this forced separation. This was the experience of thousands of families affected by the U.S. Department of Justice’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy, implemented on May 7, 2018.

Seneca Family of Agencies, a nonprofit mental health agency with Bay Area roots, made an explicit commitment to do whatever it takes to support those who cross our border, particularly those who journeyed to the U.S. only to be met with unfathomable harm via the Zero Tolerance Family Separation policy. Though many of our services have long benefited immigrants, asylum-seekers, and newcomers, Seneca directly advocated for justice through support of a class action lawsuit for the thousands of immigrant families who suffered as a result of this family separation policy. Our mental health professionals acted as pro bono expert witnesses and consultants, providing key research on the effects of trauma, the impact of family separation, and the critical need for therapeutic services for all those involved. In May 2019 Judge John A. Kronstadt ordered the federal government to provide immediate mental health screenings

and treatment to the thousands of immigrant families who suffered as a result of this family separation policy. From this decision, Seneca was entrusted with a contract from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to connect families with free, confidential, culturally and linguisticallysensitive mental health services. Within days, Todo Por Mi Familia was launched. Seneca’s Todo Por Mi Familia (“All For My Family”) team has worked tirelessly to locate families that were separated at the border and connect them with the mental health services they so critically need and deserve. Through our work, we have listened to families share their experiences of separation and have been in awe of their resiliency. We have provided basic needs that often exceed the parameters of our contract, engaged our community to rally around the families served by this initiative, and shared the heartache and triumph of this work with a global audience in partnership with celebrity advocates and renowned media outlets. In one memorable instance, Seneca’s Outreach Coordinators located a mother and young daughter living on opposite sides of the country as a result of their forced separation. The family desperately wanted to be together but were unable to afford airfare. Seneca donors sprang to action and provided funds to purchase two tickets on the first flight available for the young girl and her social worker. On Christmas Eve, 2020, the mother and daughter embraced for the first time since being separated. We wept alongside them.

Seneca is driven by a core commitment to do whatever it takes to support young people and families in times of struggle, crisis, disenfranchisement, or marginalization. Todo Por Mi Familia is an extension of this work, and the stories we bear witness to remind us that while reunification may be the first step toward healing, it does not remedy the trauma of separation. Our work continues, as thousands more families remain separated and in need of support. The task is herculean, but the promise is simple: We see you, we support you, we will do everything we can to nurture your healing, and we will do it all for your family. Seneca’s team has connected over 1,000 families so far, and enlisted more than 250 providers to help. Todo Por Mi Familia embodies Seneca’s vision of supporting children, empowering families, and advocating for traditionally unserved and underserved communities. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a lasting difference for families in your community, consider a position at Seneca. Seneca’s nationally recognized training center will take your career to the next level in the field of trauma, attachment, and children’s mental health. If you’re looking to join a collaborative team of individuals who are passionate about mental health — you’ve found it. We are currently hiring social workers, therapists, program leaders, and Bachelor’s level counselors and administrative support. hen the businesses that serve and employ the people of the Bay Area also give back to the nonprofits in the region, the results include stronger communities, happier residents and fulfilled workers who value their employers. Several of the 2021 Top Workplaces described to us the ways that they and their employees give their time, talent and thoughtfulness to make our communities better places to live, work, and play. The team members of ABD Insurance and Financial Services, Inc. are as passionate about community service as they are about professional service. ABD participates in the Week of Giving and scholarship programs through the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation and historically has held a golf tournament to raise money for cancer research. Also dedicated to youths, ABD partners with the Golden State Warriors’ Learning Without Limits program. The leadership and staff at ALOM Technologies take great pride in the company’s dedication to high standards of corporate governance and financial management integrity while remaining deeply committed to environmentally and socially conscious practices. ALOM and its employees actively support community organizations through mentoring, food and toy drives, open house tours, fiscal underwriting, and in-kind donations. When it comes to supporting local communities, BigCommerce employees are inspired to be change agents. In addition to BigCommerce’s matching donation program, employees receive two paid Volunteering Leave days per year and offices support toy drives, food drives, holiday gift programs, and school supply drives. These are just some of the many efforts run or supported by local offices. The people of BKF Engineers believe that when they give back, the community grows stronger. Among the many philanthropies and events supported by BKF Engineers are the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk; The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure breast cancer walk; Second Harvest Food Bank; Rebuilding Together; and the American Heart Association.

Management and teamwork.

PremierOne Credit Union Not just a Top Workplace. A PremierOne!

A

t PremierOne Credit Union, we didn’t randomly pick our name. It was chosen because that’s always been our goal — to be the premier credit union in every community we join. However, our goal to be the best isn’t only focused on our members. We want our employees to feel as valued as any customer who walks through our doors.

We’re honored to be chosen as a Top Workplace in the Bay Area as we continue to make PremierOne a great place to build a career and a business where people want to come to work! How do we do it? Well, here’s a look. It starts with our values. “People helping people” is our motto and the culture we’re building at PremierOne is exemplified both externally to our customers and internally to each other. Every day, employees at PremierOne strive to live the values we’re built on: • Extraordinary service •Teamwork • Respect • Fun • Accountability • Commitment Where we live and work is so vital to our employees, and we want to give them every opportunity to make it better. We know giving back to the community is important to them, so that means it’s important to us. Every year we use our branches to raise money for local charities like the San Jose

Police Activities League and the San Jose Firefighters Burn Foundation. Historically, we’ve donated thousands of dollars each year to various groups. Just read what our employees say about us: “I like how here at PremierOne Credit Union, we are like a big family. We all are very supportive of one another and we also take great pride in supporting our community.” ~ Senior Accountant We also collect cans of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank and toys during the holidays for needy families in the neighborhood. And throughout the year, we provide several ways to volunteer for organizations near and dear to our employees. We ensure everyone who works at PremierOne is fairly compensated and enjoys a range of benefits, including multiple insurance options to choose from, plenty of time off, a 401(k) with employer match, and many work perks like employee loan discounts, referral bonuses, and more.

the year. We’ve purpose-built a learning culture that extends to all corners of PremierOne to help our employees meet their career objectives. “I enjoy working at PremierOne because I am inspired by the leaders. I feel proud to be a part of an organization that values its membership with such high regard.” ~ Branch Manager Of course, to earn a Top Workplace designation, everyone’s day-to-day work with co-workers should be equally rewarding. We know it’s a fact that building bonds with co-workers makes work more enjoyable, so we always look for opportunities to celebrate the special people who make up PremierOne. From employee recognition events and goal achievement activities to team building and holiday parties, we pride ourselves on not being a “check-in/check-out” workplace but one where employees look forward to coming to work and being with friends.

“PremierOne Credit Union is more than a team. We are a family that strives to make the dreams and hopes of our members a reality.” ~ Loan Officer

“What I like most about PremierOne is the credit union feel; you’re close to everyone. You can talk to anyone and not feel intimidated. I feel comfortable talking to the VPs or CEO. Everyone is so close it’s like family.” ~ Assistant Branch Manager

We want people to join us for more than just a job, though. With numerous professional development opportunities, we strive to make PremierOne a place to learn and grow, as indicated by our Nationally recognized 2021 Educational Excellence Award. Workshops for new employees expanded training, and leadership and management development activities are available throughout

“People helping people” is our motto. The culture we’re building at PremierOne means that’s exemplified both externally to our customers, and internally to each other. And as we continue to grow and improve, we look forward to joining the Top Workplaces in the Bay Area for many years to come.

the community. Staff, family and friends enjoy coming together to volunteer at events supporting local causes that make the community a better place. Prominent fundraising efforts benefit the San Jose Police Activities League and San Jose Firefighters Burn Foundation. An in-house volunteer committee also collects nonperishable foods for the Second Harvest Food Bank, supports the San Jose Animal Shelter and participates in local toy drives as well as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Pacific Service Credit Union prides itself on being a good corporate citizen and an active part of the communities they serve by providing charitable donations to local nonprofit organizations that enrich and strengthen the lives of members in the communities we serve. With a particular focus on children, education, disaster relief and health/human services, Pacific Service Credit Union in 2020 donated $212,000 to approximately 30 nonprofit organizations including the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano, Children’s Miracle Network, Youth Homes, Shelter Inc., the Monument Crisis Center and Valley Children’s Hospital. Through Panda Restaurant Group’s philanthropic arm, Panda Cares, the company promotes a spirit of giving that is dedicated to providing food, funding and volunteer services to children’s organizations, local schools, and disaster relief efforts. The group has raised more than $107 million to support children in the communities their restaurants serve, in addition to funding worldwide disaster relief. Panda Restaurant Group actively supports organizations that educate at-risk youth, promote academics and that promote the restaurant trade. earn how these companies have benefited from being named a Top Workplace. Not only does this honor improve their company culture, but it also greatly increases their ability to attract top talent. 1st United Credit Union views this award as a testament to their efforts in remaining committed to their foundation and legacy of putting employees first. They work hard to make the company a place where people are excited to come to work. As an essential service, they had to react immediately last year to ensure the safety of their staff and members while still remaining open. 1st United acted quickly to develop a remote workforce while keeping their branches open to serve the community. They adopted online conferencing and utilized our intranet for fun, engaging activities. These efforts allowed them to remain connected with each other while they worked from home. For the 8th consecutive year ALOM Technologies stands out as a Top Bay Area Workplace. This provides a sound validation by ALOM’s staff that supports their strong culture and commitment to diversity and inclusion. ALOM’s recruitment efforts are highlighted by opportunities like providing a National Manufacturing Day open house offering (virtual) tours to student groups interested in supply chain as a career destination. Their commitment to their staff as an employer of choice has benefited ALOM through employee loyalty and expertise, with the average staff tenure exceeding 7 years. At BKF Engineers, the employees and staff are often referred to as “Team BKF” because they are serious about wanting everyone who works at BKF to feel as if they are part of one big team. The BKF recruiting team has networked and talked to countless candidates throughout the last year to ensure that we have a talented pipeline for when positions open up. Our hiring efforts have ramped up and know that all of the networking has paid off. Throughout the interview process, we don’t solely search for strong technical skills, we also are interested in finding people that have strong soft skills. This is how we strategize on finding the best of the best BKF employees!

Being ranked as a Top Workplace for 7 years in a row is a testament to Bynder LLC’s commitment to an inclusive culture. To maintain an inclusive environment, Bynder has implemented recruitment strategies to ensure our workforce reflects the diverse communities they work and live in. They have taken a closer look at how inclusive the job descriptions are written to partnering with job boards that reach out to underrepresented communities. Building a strong culture that promotes collaboration, unity, and growth has always been a top priority. Bynder is thrilled to be recognized as a Top Workplace in the Bay Area and

To do so, their recruitment team strives to hire the right people who align with their company culture. looking for those who are the best at the job, they are hiring those that make a great culture fit as well. Dudum Real Estate Group points out that there has been a great amount of competition which makes it easy to lose sight of what’s important — the people: agents, staff and even clients. When recruiting, sometimes it’s important to unwind the mindset of new hires to better understand how Dudum Real Estate Group operates and how this provides a benefit to them and those they serve. What new agents benefit from is not measurable. It’s not tangible. It’s something that is felt through experiencing it… Once they reach this point, they can truly understand the positive impact being a part of a Top Workplace environment has on them. East Bay Agency for Children (EBAC) understands that the competition for direct service staff in the social services field is very challenging as nonprofit, communitybased organizations. They have to compete with traditionally betterpaying positions within government entities and large companies. In recruiting, they point to their track record as a Top Workplace

to underscore the many intangible benefits of being part of the team. East Bay Agency for Children’s Top Workplace standing communicates to prospective employees that they would be joining a team in which their peers and managers respect, value and appreciate one another, the clients, and the agency’s equity-based organizational culture. Finding top talent for Evisort can be difficult, but finding talent that especially aligns with their company’s culture adds another layer of complexity. These candidates are a team of skilled, passionate, and driven professionals who also possess a strong sense of community and humility throughout their daily lives. These qualities and values are rare to come by. When they do find the right people, it sustains the healthy heartbeat of Evisort. Frequence is challenged by recruiting efforts that are similar to many other companies their size; they have a small team of folks working to bring in the best and brightest talent while also balancing their day-to-day priorities. They have been successful at tapping into networks to find top talent, but they hope to expand beyond their

current recruiting methods to find more talented people who share their passion for disrupting the digital advertising industry. Those who embrace the Top Workplace company culture will find a place at Frequence where they can grow both professionally and personally. Harris & Associates recognizes that talented A/E/C professionals have ample options for employment these days, especially with the heightened focus on aging infrastructure, the housing shortage, and risks associated with climate change. While compensation will always factor into job seekers’ decisions, top-tier candidates today also want to feel appreciated, contribute to meaningful work, know their perspectives are valued, and have opportunities for personal and professional growth. Harris & Associates is confident their Top Workplace recognition will vault them to the top of the list for job hunters seeking this kind of environment.

Going the extra mile, from home: How Seneca Family of Agencies made the most of remote learning

W

hen Seneca’s Occupational Therapist and Speech Language Pathologist first met Eva, their first impression was, “Ball of energy!” Eva, an elementary student at one of Seneca’s partner schools, is always on the move. Joyful, loud, excitable — perhaps Eva’s most quintessential trait is that she adores any and everything to do with unicorns.

other service providers — to ensure that she receives the support she needs to make progress toward her goals during a uniquely challenging school year. Much of Seneca’s work with Eva over the past year included activities to strengthen fine motor skills, self-expression, reading comprehension, and selfregulation techniques such as yoga, dance breaks, and coloring. Over time, they learned that perhaps the most effective way to engage Eva is to incorporate unicorns into therapy activities, much to Eva’s delight.

Everyone knew that distance learning would be hard, especially for young learners and students receiving special education services. In Eva’s case, accessing her education and receiving the individualized support she needs — virtually — has been a daily struggle. Eva is developmentally delayed and has trouble both focusing and staying on task. For much of her year of distance learning, Eva was accessing her three hours per day of Zoom instruction from a day care setting, surrounded by infinite distractions and without one-on-one in-person support to help her remain engaged.

Eva’s joy and positivity are infectious and have made a lasting impression on the adults that work with her, particularly during a year marked by hardship and loss. As she has transitioned back to part-time in-person school, Eva’s progress is accelerating. She will continue to receive specialized services from her Seneca team as well as social-emotional supports and academic accommodations to help her learn and thrive at home, at school, and beyond.

Seneca’s Occupational Therapist and Speech Language Pathologist worked creatively with the other members of Eva’s support team — her mother, general education teacher, special education teacher, and

of their lives. Since then, Seneca has expanded to provide a broad continuum of permanency, mental health, education, and juvenile justice services, which today reach over 18,000 youth and families throughout California and Washington state each year. Seneca’s growth has been guided by a commitment to a revolutionary Unconditional Care model — doing whatever it takes to help children and families thrive, even when faced with tremendous challenges. Seneca offers each child and every family a profound promise: You will be supported at every step of your journey, no matter what obstacles you face along the way. Seneca’s impact and success as an organization is made possible by our most valuable asset: our staff. Our teams are expanding in California and Washington state as our programs evolve. We seek extraordinary individuals with diverse experience to work with the remarkable young people we serve. day its own challenge to better serve its partners on the front lines. Fortunately, the transition to full-time remote work during protective measures went very smoothly, in part because they made sure to shepherd a culture of collaboration, enthusiasm, and mutual support to various online platforms. They are honored to be included in this year’s Bay Area Top Workplaces. 2021 is their first time being listed, but they don’t want it to be the last. They are looking forward to more people joining their mission! Like all employers, Keysight Technologies is in competition with other companies for top talent. With the U.S. economy opening up, top candidates have more choices. Additionally, competition over software engineering skills continues to be an in-demand skill set. As a market leader in measurement science, Keysight is at the heart of the technology revolution. Being ranked as a Top Workplace helps them recruit top talent in two ways. First, it increases their visibility overall. Second, it becomes part of the story they tell candidates about working at Keysight, substantiating the value of their robust culture, along with their cutting-edge technology, impressive business results, and bright future focused on growth. As a beer and beverage distributor, Markstein Sales Company has many opportunities for fun and exciting employment. Whether on-site company celebrations or community-wide event sponsorships and volunteer efforts, employees are always having a good time together and making people smile. Team members also work hard, giving their best to the customers, brands and fellow colleagues. One of the biggest challenges is recruiting team members that can balance the “play hard and work hard” mentality needed to fit within the successful company culture. First-time winner OnQ is eager to see how being named a Top Workplace impacts our ability to recruit effectively. It’s no secret that attracting and retaining top talent in the Silicon Valley is challenging. With so

many amazing companies located so close by, employees often have their pick of great jobs. OnQ needs to stand out from other employers. It’s also incumbent on them to hire people who live and breathe in the retail realm. Qualifications are key, but it’s equally important in their recruitment process to identify candidates who share their deep love of the retail space. Oportun’s biggest challenge in recruiting top talent is competing with some of the world’s largest technology companies and brands based in Silicon Valley. The vast majority of new team members join Oportun because of their strong belief in their mission of providing affordable and inclusive financial services to people who have been traditionally left out of the financial mainstream. The global pandemic of 2020 brought challenges to Personal Capital’s “virtualfirst” business model. Keeping current employees safe while still connected has been a huge priority, especially while keeping the corporate culture intact. That’s why being nominated as a Top Workplace for the 7th year in a row is a huge honor and testament to the people who make up their strong company culture today. This nomination will not only help attract top-notch candidates but also serve as a reminder that the company culture can withstand virtually anything. Securly Inc. understands that talent attraction is the name of the game and not so much talent acquisition. Top companies often run their talent acquisition team/recruiting departments much like marketing and view it as talent attraction. Being a small organization and competing to win the “war for talent” against more well-known and established brands is always a challenge. One key part of getting good talent is being able to educate them about the Securly brand, culture, and products. This is where external awards, recognition, and accomplishments can really leave an impression. Being ranked as a Top Workplace is an honor for Service By Medallion. They

Oportun

Synack

see this as a reward for the team that has worked hard to build a resilient and prosperous company. The growth they have achieved over the past decade coupled with their leadership’s vision and core values has given them the opportunity to gradually invest more resources into enhancing the employee experience. Employees see Medallion as a responsible employer who offers a wide variety of benefits, giving their company an edge over other outstanding employers in the Bay Area.

At SmartRecruiters, they believe “you are who you hire.” They employ incredible people, and as a result have built a strong employer brand and a culture of high performance, anchored by their values. Being named a Top Workplace is an honor and they promote achievements like these so that potential employees receive a positive and transparent candidate experience when applying for jobs with SmartRecruiters. It provides a competitive advantage in recruiting top talent. They’re also proud to offer a best-in-class talent acquisition suite that they use to drive hiring success, which also helps top enterprises transform their global hiring processes.

At SI-BONE, Inc., candidates have an extraordinary opportunity to make a direct, positive impact on improving people’s quality of life. It’s a challenge for the recruitment team to connect with talented subject-matter experts who also share their mission, vision, values, and culture. For a growing organization, they seek supportive team members of integrity who are driven by excellence, creativity, and curiosity. The Top Workplace designation will help attract future SI-BONE talent who will enable them to reach even more patients and help them through the often long and challenging patient journey toward pain relief. Sigler Wholesale Distributors is thrilled to be recognized as a Bay Area Top Workplace because it shows they’re doing the right thing by putting their employees first. By taking care of their employees, it creates a culture where every employee takes care of their customers. Happy customers come from happy employees! Since this is the first time Sigler has won this award, they are looking forward to the advantages when it comes to recruiting new team members. Finding motivated employees with a passion for customer service has been a challenge in 2021. They’re a growing business and they believe this award will help that effort.

At Synack, willingness to be accountable to one another is what creates the culture they have and it’s also what affords them opportunities like being ranked as a Top Workplace. They are thrilled to be able to recognize their team for this effort. This award will help highlight the positive company culture to talented candidates. Synack will continue to seek out individuals who can authentically add to (not “just fit into”) our company culture by bringing new experiences, perspectives, personalities, and ideas. They realize that being on the list as a Top Workplace will unlock the greatest potential for individuals, teams, and Synack as a whole. Being ranked a Top Workplace for eight consecutive years is an achievement Wind River is extremely proud of and it inspires and drives them in their efforts to continue making Wind River a great place to work. This significant recognition is not only great for their internal pride, but it’s how Wind River can differentiate itself and stand out as a leading company in their efforts to recruit top talent. We categorize the employers into size bands because smaller employers tend to score higher than midsize employers, and midsize employers tend to score higher than large employers. We then rank the employers within their size band based solely on the employee responses to the survey statements. The top employers in each size band are then selected as the Top Workplaces in the Bay Area for 2021 and listed on the Top Workplaces Summary page. We also determine a list of special awards based on standout scores on specific survey statements, which are listed on the Special Awards page.

At Wind River, the Wind Gives Back program allows employees days off to volunteer at a charity or nonprofit of their choice and participate in quarterly site or team events.
