thYear in TopWorkplaces

I

t is quite an accomplishment to be nominated and ranked as one of the Bay Area Top Workplaces even once. However, this year we wanted to highlight seven companies that have managed to achieve this honor each year we have compiled the rankings. Over the last five years, we have received a total of 616 nominations for companies, and we have collectively invited 6,405 companies to participate. This has led to the ranking of 200 small, 125 midsized, and 70 large companies over the years. From all this, only seven companies have managed to make the ranking list consecutively each of the past five years.

iD Tech The repeat honor speaks to the connection between the company and its employees. Standards are continuously set higher and higher, and the only way to meet company goals is for everyone to be striving together. It’s not only the recognition of company“wins”that keep employees motivated, but the commitment to trusting employees, appreciating their efforts, aligning their talents, and sharing generous perks when possible. The company is open with its employees and in turn, employees are motivated to dedicate themselves to the company and everything it stands for. Everyone celebrates through multiple company outings, paid time off, in-office meals and get-togethers, and much more. As an example of inclusiveness, if the company reaches its target goals for the year, every employee goes on the annual company trip.

We reached out to these seven companies and asked them how they felt about this great achievement and what were the contributing factors that led to their success. These are some of the responses we received:

Pet Food Express As a company, one of our highest priorities is to be who we say we are, and that means making a real difference in both humans’and pets’lives, not just making sales. We are incredibly grateful to our amazing employees, who are out there actually making this difference day after day, and so we work hard to maintain a company culture that allows our people to express their talents and realize their potential. Taking the time and money to extensively educate and train our employees and then trusting them to do the right thing is the only option, and we have a continuing faith that our communities will recognize the difference between us and our competitors. Being honored for the fifth time in a row in the Top Workplaces survey is incredibly important to us, because it means that not only do we appreciate and believe in our employees, but that they return the feeling. Getting this nowyearly confirmation that our people enjoy coming in to work every day – and even welcome all the extra training we put them through – reaffirms our belief in serving others first, and we are more committed than ever to continue to impr improve on that.

McManis Faulkner McManis Faulkner has been ranked as a Top Workplace by the Bay Area News Group for five (5) consecutive years. These rankings are a testament to our attorneys and staff. Their commitment to excellence in client service and professional development creates an environment of fellowship for all of us and success for our clients, the firm and our community. We all strive to do our best work because we are part of a team that recognizes the value of each individual. Every success is celebrated with special events or personal acknowledgement as a firm but we all take pride in sharing our achievements with the entire community. This award allows us the opportunity to do so. ~ Beth Semilof

About the Top Workplaces 2014 Survey Provided by WorkplaceDynamics, who conducted theTopWorkplaces Bay Area 2014 project. OUTREACH WorkplaceDynamics reaches out to employers with at least 40 employees in the Bay Area to participate. We use a combination of print and online ads, and direct outreach to employers using direct marketing list (e.g. infoUSA).

EMPLOYEE SURVEY We survey employees at participating employers using either paper surveys or an online survey application. Employees respond to a set of statements using a seven point Likert scale. Each of the statements has been tested to ensure it has a high correlation with how employees feel about their workplace, which is calculated by correlating the statement responses to a control question which asks each employee to rate their workplace on a scale of zero to 99.

RESPONSE REQUIREMENTS We require a response rate of at least 35 percent for employees based in the Bay Area. In addition, employers with 85 or fewer Bay Area employees must have at least 30 responders. We encourage employers to survey all employees, but large employers can choose to randomly sample their Bay Area employees. At least 500 employees must be included in the random sample for employers 2,500 or less. For those employers over 2,500 but less than 5,000 employees, we require 20 percent minimum distributed. For employers 5,000 or more the minimum is 1,000 surveys distributed.

TESTING FOR QUESTIONABLE RESULTS After the survey is complete, we first run a series of statistical tests to look for any questionable results. We disqualify a small number of employers based on these tests. As the effectiveness of these tests depends on employers not being aware of them, we do not publish the details.

SELECTION OF TOP WORKPLACES We categorize the employers into size bands because smaller employers tend to score higher than midsize employers, and midsize employers tend to score higher than large employers. We then rank the employers within their size band based solely on the employee responses to the survey statements. The top employers in each size band are then selected as the Top Workplaces in the Bay Area for 2014.

He communicates! He values EMPLOYEES as being critical to Workday’s success! Customers are also a focus, but he realizes that if you have HAPPY employees, everything else falls into place. He encourages ideas, he encourages employees, he fosters success and growth and padding his pocketbook is not his main goal in life! He genuinely cares about employees. He is down to earth, and very approachable too. I like and appreciate that! Dave is completely different and the same with Aneel. I love that about them and I don’t feel like my contribution is going to fund lavish hobbies. I think Dave and Aneel really rock!

CHANGING the

WORKPLACE

and the

WORLD

It’s not every day employees show up for meetings on pedal go-karts. Or spend the lunch hour rock climbing. But here at GoDaddy, it’s just another day at the office. Our vision is to radically shift the global economy toward small business. We do this by empowering people to start, grow and run their own ventures. We live our strategy and ruthlessly prioritize our work to create simple, elegant technology that delights our customers – all while delivering service that’s second to none. At GoDaddy, our people are at the core of our success. We’re thousands of exceptionally talented and passionate individuals united by a desire to change the world. And that number is growing.

GoDaddy

We opened our first Bay Area office in Sunnyvale in February 2013, but quickly had to make room for an influx of new talent. In March 2014, GoDaddy moved to the Moffett Towers, joining companies like Google® and Amazon®. GoDaddy is on a mission to change the world. However, our leaders understand employees need time away from the office to stay healthy and succeed. To help create a healthy work-life balance, we recently began offering unlimited flexible time-off for salaried employees. We also

VALUES

provide access to wellness coaches, on-site counselors and debt management services. In the past year, we’ve gone through an incredible transformation. We’re evolving in visible ways – opening new offices, redesigning existing facilities for open collaboration, attracting top talent, relaunching our brand and making our values known. These values are our North Star, powering our success at every turn. They’re paramount to attracting, hiring, promoting and rewarding the best employees.
