BLUE is BACk Since collecting young artist accolades a few years ago, U of R alum soprano Angel Blue has put in her time professionally — sharing the stage with the likes of Plácido Domingo, David Foster and Chaka Khan, performing in “La Bohème,” “Carmen” and “Tosca,” as well as hosting on the BBC. This summer, she returns to the Redlands Bowl.
JUNGLE sONG With a treehouse built on a series of platforms, a cast of 100 singers and dancers portraying life in the jungle and an artist committed to the athletics of swinging through the trees while embracing a pop rock soundtrack, “Tarzan,” a musical based on the Disney movie, is not to be missed.

CatChing up with Southern California’S own Celebrated Soprano, angel blue

B
efore celebrated soprano vocalist Angel Blue graced theater stages around the world, she studied music at the University of redlands as a classical pianist. But the Apple Valley native says her heart was always in opera. “To be honest, I didn’t think I had what it took to be a singer,” admits Blue. “I was playing a lot of rachmaninoff and loud show pieces. I was good at that, [yet] it didn’t feel like what I wanted. There was always something missing.”
Blue, who also plays sax and bass guitar, graduated from Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and won the redlands Bowl’s Young Artists Competition in 2002. She helped fund her college tuition by entering regional beauty pageants (including claiming a 1st runner up finish in the 2006 Miss California pageant). After obtaining a bachelor’s degree from the U of r, Blue received her master’s in opera at UCLA. She trained at LA opera’s prestigious Young Artist Program under the tutelage of General Director Plácido Domingo. Since then, the award-winning vocalist has performed internationally with prominent symphony orchestras in operas like “La Traviata,” “Carmen,” “Tosca,” “Porgy & Bess,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Don Giovanni.” A few years ago, Blue became a TV presenter for the BBC Proms, London’s long-running summer classical music festival (she helms BBC Cardiff Singer of the World in Wales on June 18). on July 11, when she returns to redlands — a place where she likes to spend free time — many friends and family members will be in attendance. We caught up on the phone with Blue in Dresden, Germany, where she just finished a stint as Myrtle in “The Great Gatsby” before moving onto the role of Mimi in “La Bohème.” Question: Did winning the redlands Bowl competition have a major effect on your burgeoning career? Answer: It gave me more confidence and helped me see that I could make a mark in my field. That award was one of the most meaningful times at the start of my career. It allowed me to see that I could move forward in the art form. Also, I got to do

Z zZzZzZzZzZ [a song from] “La Traviata” by Verdi. That meant a lot, because opera singers are often told “You shouldn’t sing this until you’re older.” It made me feel like an opera star. That’s a great feeling. Q: When you return to the Bowl this summer, what are you looking forward to the most? A: Working with Frank Fetta. I met him when I was 19 and had no idea what I was doing when I auditioned [for the Redlands Bowl competition]. I was just a young college student who really liked opera. I was competing against people who were more seasoned than I was. … I went in and everyone else had an accompanist. I only had a stereo player. He said, “If you can come in and sing like that with a ghetto blaster, you deserve to win.” Q: How does the Redlands Bowl compare to other places you’ve performed? A: I’m biased because I went to the University of Redlands. … No matter where I’ve traveled, coming home to Redlands and being able to sing there will always represent my roots.

What I love about the atmosphere is it’s very enchanting. Standing onstage and seeing the audience with smiles on their faces and their picnics, it makes my job much easier. Q: Did you attend shows there while growing up in the I.E.? A: My parents would take us to see the summer concert series for kids; I went to a couple of those. When I was about 15, I saw a musical. Q: After completing the LA Opera program, you performed with Plácido Domingo several times. What were those experiences like? A: I first met him when I was 23. It was a weird time because my father had just passed away. I really needed to find someone who could continue what my dad had started — my love for opera. Maestro Domingo provided that and was very encouraging. He continues to be. Singing with him is just awesome. I feel blessed to be able to say that I’ve sung with him all over the world — in Asia, the Middle East, the United States. The only reason I’ve been to South America was to do a concert with him in Brazil. One thing I really enjoy about being onstage with him is [seeing how] he’s a great musician and really good actor. On top of that, there’s something about the way he performs that brings everybody who’s onstage with him up a notch. Working with him has made me a better artist. Q: Did he ever give you any advice that helped with your singing? A: Absolutely. He said, “Make sure you always have time to spend with your family.” My mom and I have been to his home. We had a concert in Acapulco in 2013. Q: How many languages did you learn to be able to sing opera? A: Italian, German, French, Spanish and Russian. I studied Russian for a year. Young Artists competition shifts format, adds orchestra Since 1950, the Redlands Bowl has spotlighted the region’s most promising talent on the rise. This year, some changes have been implemented to improve the vocal/instrumental contest. Now known as the Young Artists Concerto Competition, it features a more compact group of finalists — no longer divided by age group — who will perform up to 15 minutes each with orchestra. Valerie Peister, Redlands Bowl Performing Arts program director, says the previous piano recital format was “always a wonderful evening, but one of the more lightly attended concerts of the season.” As a result, organizers sought to “showcase these young artists in a way they really deserve.”
I can understand them. Q: You’ve performed “La Bohème” many times in the past. Would you consider it to be one of your favorites? A: Definitely. … Mimi is a wonderful character with some really fantastic music. Q: In 2011, you shared a stage with Chaka Khan, the late Donna Summer and other prominent pop/R&B acts during the David Foster & Friends show in Las Vegas. What was that like? A: I was so nervous, but I had a great time. … The atmosphere around his concert is relaxed, but serious. He’s responsible for some of the greatest music that has ever been recorded. I felt totally honored. I learned a lot from him and Chaka Khan. There was a strong sense of camaraderie that I think the opera world needs more of … Donna Summer was at that concert. Then I saw her again in Napa Valley at the Festival del Sole, which I’m doing this year [“Porgy & Bess,” July 22]. What an incredible, supportive woman. Q: Three years ago, you released a solo album, “Joy Alone.” Were you satisfied with how it turned out? A: For the most part. I am very thankful to have an album, more so for

The camera presents [everything] straight down the lens. In a way, that’s more intimidating. The BBC has been very kind to me. They continue to use me, and I’m grateful for that. Can I add something? Swing time Tarzan’s venture into the Bowl requires strength and new techniques By Amy Bentley

hen producer and director Paul Jacques brings the Disney musical “Tarzan” to the Redlands Bowl this summer, audiences will see a visually stunning, grand production featuring unique theatrical tricks. Jacques, a Riverside resident who previously directed the Redlands Bowl productions of “hairspray,” “Oliver!” and “The Music Man,” is going big with “Tarzan” for the Redlands Bowl’s 94th season. Almost 100 actors and dancers are participating, portraying stampeding apes, plants in the jungle and a killer leopard — and that’s just the animal and plant characters. Tarzan — wearing his signature loincloth and a dreadlock wig — will swing through the stage with the help of trapezes and some clever illusions. “It’s a combination of smoke and mirrors,” Jacques said, not wanting to give too much away about his method of bringing Tarzan and the jungle alive. The set will include Tarzan’s tree house built on a series of platforms about 10 feet high. Redlands resident Jimmy Saiz plays Tarzan and Melissa Smith of Beaumont is Jane in the well-loved story about a baby boy who washes up on the shores of Africa after a shipwreck and is raised by gorillas. Jacques described Saiz as “an extremely athletic actor with a killer voice.”

Saiz previously played Tarzan last year in a smaller production of the show at The Box in Riverside, and this will mark his debut at the Redlands Bowl. Smith previously played a Disney Princess at Disney World in Orlando so she is familiar with Disney lore. Saiz, 30, who works as an actor, singer and voice coach throughout Southern California, said Tarzan is a challenging role that requires a lot of physical strength. “not only do you have to look a specific way aesthetically, with a specific body type, you have to be incredibly strong. everything is all me.
“On top of that is Phil Collins’ music. It’s pop rock-oriented and requires a specific sound. So while you are jumping around on platforms, your vocal stamina has to be sound. It’s all around one of the most challenging roles out there,” Saiz said. Compared to his Tarzan performance at The Box, “everything is bigger this year. everything has to be bigger, better and more intense. That’s a big challenge, going from a small theater to this massive, outdoor amphitheater,” Saiz added. Rounding out the large cast are local adult and child actors and more than 40 young dancers from Inland Pacific Ballet Theater in Claremont. Audiences are sure to enjoy the music score by Collins, including the hit song, “You’ll Be in My Heart.” Jacques is seeking to make the stage production similar to the Disney film. “Part of the challenge is so many people have seen the Disney movie so we’re trying to keep it as much like the movie as possible,” he said. Jacques faced many unique technical challenges in staging this show. For the opening shipwreck sequence, he is using a projector, a new technique for the Bowl, he said. The Bowl’s ballet floor also will be used for the large dance numbers, he said. “It’s kind of fun to push the envelope like this to get new concepts.” The use of trapezes is also new for the venue. other major productions are building trapezes throughout the set, and professional aerialists will help train the cast. “You’ve got to teach the actors how to move like the apes. We’re spending a
couple days on movement and how apes move,” he said. “TARZAN” Public dress rehearsal is Tuesday, July 25. Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursday-Sunday, July 27-30.

n exotic atmosphere will envelope the redlands Bowl this summer. mystic india, a journey through the country’s past and present, emphasizes ancient traditions and Bollywood through a production featuring more than a dozen dancers, musicians and vibrant costumes. Last year, mystic india played in pasadena. it opened a carrie Underwood performance in Las Vegas two years earlier and routinely tours around the world. “there has been a huge demand for us to visit california again,” says creative director/choreographer amit shah, via email. “the show has been evolving since our last visit, and many people are coming back to see it.” shah came up with the concept in 2010 during a family visit to india. “i wanted to create a show that encompassed the beautiful sights and sounds of india, while maintaining a modern approach to the way it is presented,” regarding production values

and how the stories are told. “it was important for me to showcase the diversity of the nation and teach the audience about india’s vast history,” he adds. “commercially (especially on american television), indian dance is sort of misrepresented, and i felt the need to change that. it has been quite exciting to see the number of people we have educated and entertained over the years.” the music in mystic india encompasses

Bowl Associates add Cuban spice to a rich community tradition By Don Sproul

whisper of cigar smoke, the taste of mint and lime mojitos, small talk at the blackjack table and strains of Cuban music floating in the breeze, ernest hemmingway might be around somewhere. ... it can only be havana Nights, this year’s July 8 benefit for the redlands Bowl performing Arts. The 54th annual event, hosted by the Associates of the redlands Bowl, supports the rBpA’s summer music festival, children’s workshops and educational programs. Last year, ticket sales along with live and silent auction proceeds raised nearly $70,000. how did they land on Cuba? with the recent easing of travel restrictions to the island nation and a desire for something bright, colorful and distinctly different from last year’s hamptons-style white party, the women settled on havana Nights as the launch pad for the evening’s fun. so pull out your bright colorful garb, dress causally and be ready to roll into the esri Café to enjoy a buffet of Cuban fare, live music, dancing, sweets, gambling and a cigar lounge. The evening will begin with a patron reception at 5 p.m. with doors opening for all comers
at 5:30 p.m. Also scheduled are live and silent auctions, perhaps a brief dancing lesson — and, of course, fun. Tickets are $110 per person, or $165 per person for patron tables of 8 or 12. For shook, working on the benefit and participation in the Associates represents the completion of a life’s full circle and what the Bowl is all about: free music and the opportunity for everyone to enjoy the arts. when she moved to redlands years ago, shook was raising two children by herself and was looking for activities she could do with her children. “The Bowl was
here, and it was free. … That was the culture they got when they were little.” Twenty years later, the children are grown and have their own lives, and Shook is an associate giving back and remembering. “Every time I see children running around the Bowl … kids dancing [to the music] and twirling like ballerinas, it’s just a very moving experience.” While the Bowl’s musical roots are classical, the programs have expanded through the years. In addition to the symphony, today’s seasons include a musical, jazz and ballet, and it’s amazing how many people come, many of them families with young children, Shook says. De La Ossa says being part of the Associates and supporting the Bowl has been a wonderful, amazing experience. She’s in year three of a five-year commitment to the Associates, but her relationship with the Bowl dates to 1976 when she first moved to Redlands. The nation’s longest running free outdoors music program isn’t just about arts and culture, it’s also about community — in the numerous committees that do the behind-the-scenes work of the benefit, with the women at the hostess booth during the season’s concerts and those who help support the children’s workshops. The women come from diverse backgrounds, but they all share a commitment to the Bowl. Her favorite moment through the years? The opening of the musical “Oklahoma!” last year.
It began with the lead on the balcony of Mission Gables, followed by a horseback ride through audience to the stage. The staging and the caliber of performance were amazing, De La Ossa said. If supporting the incredible variety and artistry of the Bowl performances isn’t enough to get folks to the benefit, Canada is eager to share details on the auction items. How about a preChristmas celebration day at your own home? It will start with folks showing up to decorate the house, wrap your gifts and serve brunch; carolers and a visit from S. Claus included. Or consider a girls’ escape to the beach weekend at a 1912 cottage with yoga, wine pairings, an art class, swimming, a sunset Duffy boat ride and perhaps even a scavenger hunt. There’s more: house boating, a limosupported progressive dinner, a stay at the Disneyland Hotel. … Canada says the live auction typically features experiences and things to do, add to that perhaps 60 to 80 items in a silent auction and there’s something for everyone. started salivating the minute the truck pulled up with our new outdoor grill, an electric woodpellet cooker that looks like a cannon and weighs just as much. “Over here, no over here! Maybe in the garage.” i try to steer the poor delivery guy and his gigantic overweight parcel around the patio like an awkward dance partner. He is demonstrating more patience than i deserve. the box lands with a thud. i am eagerly tearing it open before the truck is down the street. i had been waiting for this. sentenced to cooking only indoors. today, we were about to join the 75 percent of U.s. adults who own an outdoor grill, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue association. We were like two inmates just released from kitchen jail. i could already smell the wood fire, and taste the mesquiteinfused chipotle chicken. dC could not assemble the grill — a traeger eastwood 34 — fast enough. after the grill was together, we cooked outdoors every night for a week. We grilled burgers and kabobs. We seared steaks and roasted veggies. We wondered why we had waited so long. Why? Because choosing a backyard
barbecue is not as easy as it used to be. do you want gas, charcoal, electric, or the wood-pellet burning variety? What size? What color? Built-in or free-standing? i just want dinner. i did my homework, then let dC pick. and he did. after dC had cooked up a couple excellent meals, i asked for his review. “it’s the best grill i have ever used,” said dC, who has had both fancy gas and charcoal grills before. “i like that you don’t need to worry about a propane tank running out or blowing up, a gas line or a supply of charcoal. i like that all you need is an outlet and wood pellets, which aren’t nearly as messy as charcoal.

“I like that you get a smoked-wood flavor, and that you can set the temperature like you do on an oven, shut the lid and walk away,” he added. Apparently, his reaction echoes the marketplace, where “electric wood-pellet grills are the fastest growing segment,” said Dan Parrilli, senior merchant of grills for The Home Depot. “Consumers love that you can grill, smoke, bake, roast, braise and barbecue with the same cooker, and set the heat for low and slow or fast and hot.” Beyond this blazing grill trend, America’s passion for outdoor grilling in general is still hot, hot, hot. “Our national pastime for gathering around the grill is strong and showing all indications of continuing to grow,” said Jack Goldman, president of the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, in a statement. He attributes the trend to our “continued passion for culinary adventure.”
Parrilli also credits the strong interest in shows on the Food Network. As a result, “outdoor chefs are moving way beyond burgers and dogs, and are cooking pizzas, poppers and even French toast on their outdoor grills.” As outdoor grilling season starts to heat up, I looked into what the hot trends were in a cooking method that dates back to the cavemen — and women — days.
No signs of cooling This year, 37 percent of U.S. adults plan to purchase a new grill or smoker, according to the latest Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association survey. Most buyers will be replacing or upgrading their current grills. Of the 10 percent of grill owners who have outdoor kitchens, one third plan to add to them in the next few years.
It’s all about the flavor Of the grill owners surveyed, 71 percent said improved flavor was the
number one reason they used grills. However, I think women — with all due respect to the female pit masters out there — aren’t admitting that it’s really about getting the man of the house fired up to cook a little more.
Bells and whistles The biggest advancements in outdoor grilling are in accessories, said Parrilli. “Today’s outdoor grills feature side burners, searing burners (a super-heated area for steaks), rotisseries, warming racks, smokers, broiling baskets, vegetable baskets, pizza stones, pizza ovens and oven thermometers. Also new are pans specific for such favorites as grilled cheese sandwiches or jalapeno poppers.
Game changer The new Bluetooth grill thermometer is Parrilli’s favorite new gadget. “It lets you monitor the food and grill temperature on your phone,” he said.

l Barilla and rick Wineman have opened a second restore Kitchen in redlands, offering an array of breakfast items and a larger selection of entrees than at their lugonia location. it’s truly a taste of americana, and the flavors leap off the plate. less gastropublike than the original, it has more of a feel of a Sunday brunch or supper meal establishment. Breakfast items are superb, and you also get a huge piece of moist pineapple upside-down corn bread topped with Craisins with your breakfast order. The veggie patty and eggs are spectacular. The patty consists of a blend of edamame and garbanzos as well as rice and quinoa served with orange-flavored hollandaise. Even better are the Bananas Foster waffles made from spent grain drizzled with a Vermont maple syrup and goat cheese blended with a beer caramel sauce that tastes very much like sweetened mascarpone.
