The Redlands family YMCA presents: the 47th annual

Holiday Home Tour Sunday, Dec. 7; 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

W

elcome to the 47th annual Y Holiday Home Tour! This holiday tradition is made possible through the generosity of the homeowners who are sharing their homes with us on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Along with the home tour, we also have the Home-Baked Goods Pantry and Art & Gift Boutique open Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6-7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All proceeds from the Home Tour, Boutique and Pantry go to support the Legal Aid program, which was offered by the YWCA and now by the Redlands Family Y. For decades, the Legal Aid program has been one of the most valuable and impactful services available in San Bernardino County. Its goal is to offer affordable legal services to individuals and families dealing with domestic

matters — including divorce, custody and guardianship. To learn more about this important service, please see the story on Page 8. Six homes are featured in this year’s tour: the Nelson/Cahraman home, at 214 W. Cypress Ave.; the Barnes home, at 815 W. Cypress Ave.; the Greene home, at 726 Chestnut Ave.; the Kelly home, at 907 Walnut Ave.; the Gonzales/Loza home, at 649 Los Altos Drive; and the Bangsund home, at 648 Palo Alto Drive. Please help us thank our sponsors and opportunity basket donors by supporting their businesses. The YMCA Holiday Home Tour is also the product of a community of volunteers who bake for the pantry, sell tickets, recruit sponsors, host in the homes, provide parking assistance and so much more. Their efforts make this event a success!

In a time of need, help Legal Aid Clinic helps women and working poor resolve civil issues By Amy Bentley

G

etting a divorce, resolving child custody issues or fighting an eviction can be costly, daunting tasks for someone with no legal knowledge or experience, but for Redlands-area residents who need help, the YMCA of the East Valley helps fill the gap. The Y’s Legal Aid Clinic has been helping San Bernardino County residents for 40 years. The clinic is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. San Bernardino County attorney Steven A. Becker launched the program in 1973, when he was developing his family law practice. It began as a program of the Salvation Army in Redlands.

8

| redlandsmagazine.com | winter 2014

“Demand for the services, I can assure you, has not decreased,” said Becker, who is 70 and hopes to retire next year. “Walk into any family law court and you see the kinds of devastation that happens.” For the program’s first six or seven years, Becker volunteered handling cases and making group presentations to clients along with San Bernardino County attorneys Jim Glick, the late Carroll M. Lawson and the late Kenneth Nydam. “There’s an overwhelming need for a service like that. Family law problems happen to the rich, the poor and everybody in between, and the cost is prohibitive, especially for working class and poor people. We were trying to level the playing field,” Becker added. Ann McMahon of Redlands, a longtime volunteer, says that many clients just need guidance.

YMCA of the East Valley’s Legal Aid Clinic • Annual budget: about $118,000 • 85 percent of clients fall into the extremely low to low income range, as specified by federal guidelines • Approximately 30 percent of clients are from Redlands • The program offers free consultations and provides clients with waivers that eliminate court fees • 100 percent of the net proceeds from the Home Tour go directly to the YMCA legal aid program • The Holiday Home Tour is the primary supporter of the Legal Aid Clinic

“It can be difficult for the client going to court,” she added. “The clinic has had court preparation workshops conducted by attorneys so when people go to court they at least have an idea what’s going to happen.” The Legal Aid program primarily helps people with family law issues, such as child custody, guardianships, divorce and legal separation, as well as in other civil matters like landlord-tenant disputes and domestic violence restraining order requests. Services are provided at a low cost, based on income. Volunteer attorneys and para-professionals help the clients — most of whom are women — with paperwork and preparing for court hearings. During the past seven years, the program has seen a steady increase in clients, and nearly 3,600 people were served in 2013, according to Ariana Whitehouse, development director of the YMCA of the East Valley. A year after the program started, it moved to the Redlands YWCA, and it later became a YMCA program after the merger of the YWCA and the YMCA in 1998. The program is now located at the Redlands YMCA facility at 500 E. Citrus Ave. Richard E. Bawden, a family law attorney in Redlands and a former member of the YMCA board of directors, also volunteered for several years. He says that many of the clients are hard-working folks with jobs but nowhere near enough money to pay for an attorney. The program’s volunteers also have benefited in their own way over the years, he adds. “Every once in a while you’d see somebody who really was in a tough spot and you could help them out, and that made you feel good.”

rom the gently curved exterior to the extended corners of some of its rooms, this home is all about the angles. Built in 1910, the 5-bedroom, 2-bath structure opens to a circular foyer, with a graceful staircase leading up and French doors leading out just beyond. Through pocket doors, an angled living room with stepped brick fireplace and chimney veer off to the left of the foyer, while to the right is a large square dining room, featuring original built-in, glass-front cabinetry halfway up one wall. A newly remodeled kitchen in various shades of green blends seamlessly with the period architecture of the 2,848-square-foot home, which also includes a large open living space at the top of the second-story landing. Another unique aspect of the home is its many stairs and steps. The kitchen is down several steps from the bottom stairway landing, while a handful of steps lead to an upstairs bedroom off the main staircase. The simple creamy white on the walls of most of the home’s entry and interior is a lovely backdrop for the polished oak and fir floors and the gleaming wooden stairway banister. A pool and garden area, featuring three enormous Queen Anne palm trees, and double-story balconies create a tranquil respite along a busy thoroughfare.

The Barnes family moved in a year ago and the home has been transformed to suit a modern lifestyle, while staying true to its heritage. A broad lawn, more than 100 rose bushes and a sweeping covered porch welcome guests to the nearly 4,000-square-foot house, considered one of the city’s old grove homes. It includes five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a living room/parlor, formal dining room, family room, second-story porch/playroom, a first-story office, wine cellar and an attic.

The two main floors shine with period details including much of the original oak flooring, built-in cabinets and bookcases, a butler’s pantry, and dozens of windows, about 95 percent of which retain their original glass. Subway tile and two skirted pedestal sinks lend period authenticity to the master suite, which also features a collection of beveled and leaded windows. Old mingles with new as solid-core doors and three claw-foot tubs remain in the house, where honed Carrera marble now covers the countertops in the kitchen and used brick is underfoot. Double staircases — one in the entryway, the other in the kitchen — recall the home’s original time period, when servants and children used only the latter.

T

he city of Redlands is home to only a handful of true adobe homes and, happily, one of those is part of this year’s tour. Built in the mid-1940s, this single-story, 3-bedroom, 1½-bath home features 18-inchthick white walls and soaring wooden ceilings that evoke the aura of a hacienda. That ambience is further accentuated in the home’s décor, with numerous colorful artifacts — including statuary, tile and furniture — from Mexico. Red Saltillo tile covers the floor throughout the 2,200-square-foot home, while Talavera ceramic tiles provide accents. Among the more stunning pieces are double Talavera sinks in a peacock pattern in the home’s main bathroom. The adobe construction keeps the home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and the home’s plethora of doors and windows — including new crank windows — allow for tranquil breezes to float through. The lazy-u-shaped home surrounds an enchanting courtyard, filled with an array of vivid pots and plants, as well as a brightly painted sunflower yellow iron table and chairs. A 6-foot-tall sculptured iron gate leads from the courtyard to an expansive yard/pool area, which the current owners transformed dramatically after purchasing the home three years ago. They are also responsible for rejuvenating the entire home and completely renovating the kitchen area, where gold and cobalt blue tiles lend a splash of color. The Greene family is only the second family to live in the home. It was previously occupied by Frank and Betty Greenway. Her father built the adobe.

Adjacent to the dining room, the kitchen has a tile counter and wood cabinets.

rom the top of its gabled roof to the newly painted wrap-around white porch, this home is filled with a sense of time and place — of the era when the home was built and the city of Redlands was new. Constructed in 1891, only three years after the city was incorporated, the three-story home — referred to as Colonial farmhouse style — encompasses 5,200 square feet and sits on a 30,000-square-foot lot. It was the first home in town to have indoor plumbing and the swimming pool previously did duty as a reservoir. Indoors, the restored 4-bedroom, 4-bath home features pocket doors, soaring ceilings, arched doorways, slate and wood flooring, burnished wood banisters, and six fireplaces, one of which includes an ornately carved marble mantle. The home’s owners are avid collectors

of vintage and repurposed items, which fill the home. Among these are oversized vintage prints and signs, three stained-glass panels in the living room, and a coffee table on casters using the reclaimed wood from the home’s old front porch. A robin’s-egg blue shelved alcove among the white walls in a small sitting area offers even more whimsy. Bedrooms with vintage flair inhabit the second floor, while the third floor is turned over to the “Man Cave,” outfitted with a projection screen, bar, antique pool table, drum sets and an old refrigerator fitted with beer taps. A small room off to the side includes a closet and bathroom behind two original hotel room doors — Nos. 206 and 306 — from the long-demolished La Posada Hotel in downtown Redlands.

L

overs of mid-century modern design and décor will be thrilled with this home in the Country Club Estates area. Built in 1964, the house has retained much of its original style: terrazzo aggregate tile in the entryway and on the fireplace surround, two grasscloth-covered walls, green sinks in the powder room, and speckled green Armstrong Montina Corlon vinyl flooring in the kitchen. The current owners, who moved in a year ago, have continued to lovingly bring their home’s time period to life with furnishings old and new that reflect the era. A hi-fi stereo and working phone booth occupy prime spots in the sunken living room, while a pair of white bubble chairs beckon in the den just beyond. An authentic laminate-topped table and chairs fill a spot in the kitchen, while a more formal Danish modern set beams in the dining room, where the new flooring is period-perfect composite vinyl tile. Fresh starburst-patterned wallpaper in the kitchen and a silver-toned geometric design in the dining room evoke the era even more. In the master bedroom, however, the wallpaper is original to the home — a classic Van Luit print. The large master suite also includes his and hers dressing areas and doors that extend to a small side patio. Newer items, such as a Jonathan Adler room divider screen, mimic designs original to the home and complete the seamless merging of old and new in this unique dwelling, which recently was granted historic status.

erched on a hilltop above Country Club Estates, this once viewless home has been transformed into a modern and airy living space, with beautiful vistas of the surrounding neighborhood and the hills beyond. Built in 1964, the home retains some elements of mid-century modern design, but its new look is more clean-lined contemporary, with soothing tones of beige, tan and gray in the décor. Pops of color are provided by an array of stunning paintings by local artists, as well as a lavender wall just off the kitchen. At 2,500 square feet, the home’s original footprint remains the same, encompassing 3 bedrooms, 2½ baths, formal living and dining rooms, and a den. A recently renovated dressing area in the master suite includes a bank of unique pull-out drawers for easy storage. The renovated kitchen offers pendant lighting where cabinets formerly hung and neutral glass tile on a portion of the walls. A small bar area with floating shelves nearby provides a cozy gathering spot. Windows cover most of the home’s back walls, with doors opening to a large patio and charming seating areas that take advantage of the view. A winding, stepped path curves downward from the yard toward the street. At the front of the home, an array of tiered, glossy succulents and native plants welcome guests en route to the front door.

A

ll painters have their inspiration — that person, place, thing or feeling that moves them to create art. For Redlands-area painter Dennis Hare, his inspiration was an 1888 Vincent Van Gogh oil painting, “Entrance to the Public Garden in Arles.” The Van Gogh work depicts a street in front of a walkway leading into a public garden. At the entrance stands a man reading a newspaper. Along the walkway are four people sitting on benches and a woman with her back turned. None of these figures has distinguishable features or faces. The trees, sky and walkways are heavily textured.

32

| redlandsmagazine.com | winter 2014

Hare saw the painting during a visit to a museum in San Francisco about 35 years ago and knew instantly that he wanted to be a painter. A former beach volleyball star, Hare has a degree in physical education and a teaching certificate. He was ready to launch a coaching career, but scrapped those plans to paint instead. Today, Hare, 68, paints from a home studio in Mentone, where he has lived for 15 years. Never one to shy away from different techniques, he’s created many

sculpture-like works by incorporating discarded junkyard materials — such as car parts, bedsprings, books, pieces of metal and clothing, and tar — into his paintings. This all came about during an economic recession when Hare couldn’t afford to spend thousands of dollars on supplies. He feels these pieces have more texture, depth and character. “I would go out to junkyards and get collectibles that I liked. I would go through them and started adding them onto canvas. These have a soul and life like anything else. I felt these would get a second look.” Today, Hare focuses on oils, and his style is abstract. Like the Van Gogh masterpiece that inspired him, his faces are blurred and without detail. He uses texture skillfully. When asked how he describes his art, Hare explained, “It’s about humanity, not too much about the process. I like something that’s authentic and spoken from the heart.” He dislikes gimmicky art. Hare’s works have been exhibited at, and sold from, galleries nationwide. His home was included on the Redlands YMCA 2013 Holiday Home Tour. More than 1,000 people came through and saw his works,

and he has donated a piece to the Redlands YMCA, where it hangs in the entryway. Hare is grateful that he’s been able to spend his life doing what he loves. For this, he thanks the lessons he learned from beach volleyball. “It gave me the confidence and the work ethic to do art. If anybody sticks with it and does a lot of work, they can be successful. You have to get it out there and promote it.” Hare attended Yucaipa High School and became a top beach volleyball player after graduating from San Diego State University. He wrote the first book about the sport, “The Art of Beach Volleyball,” which was published in 1979. “I did the illustrations for the book so that got me into painting,” he said. He was playing and coaching until he saw the Van Gogh. “The art was more important. It affected my life. I already had art within me. We all have things inside of us but sometimes they don’t come out. It was just a connection that I had within me with this painting.” Hare moved to Mexico for two years to paint, learn about color and develop his style. Hare has never been married
