In a move that brings her career full circle in more ways than one, sculptor Carly Gibran is the featured artist for this year’s DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts. The DeLand native and Stetson University fine-arts graduate recalls making her first-ever piece of pottery at the age of 6, at what was then the DeLand Museum of Art, the festival’s primary backer. “I was so shocked when they called me,” Gibran said. “I was like, ‘What? You’re kidding!’” Exhibiting in the fall show for a third year, Gibran’s love of art goes back to her childhood. During high school, she recalled taking all of the art classes on offer, save for one — ceramics. “It either wouldn’t fit into my schedule, or it would be full,” she said. “I had to walk through the ceramics department to get to my other classes, and thought I would always do it someday.” Shortly after graduating from Deltona High School, she purchased a potter’s wheel, along with a used kiln,
and began experimenting with her craft. Working in three dimensions appealed to Gibran almost immediately. “I drew well enough, but I was never a strong drawer, so I thought maybe 3D was my thing,” she said. “When I started working with clay, it just kind of clicked, like when you meet someone and you know you’re going to be friends with them immediately.” Gibran remembers volunteering at the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts while in high school, to get required volunteer hours. “I was able to work behind the scenes at the festival. It was really interesting, and so I got to see not from the artist side but from the administrative side, to see how all the pieces worked,” she said. “It was really amazing to see how much goes into it.” After high school, Gibran initially enrolled at the University of Central Florida, with her mind on an advertising degree. The degree proved to be more of a business-oriented program, rather than a creative outlet, as she hoped, however, so she soon transferred to Stetson University,
where she graduated in 2003 with a degree in fine arts. Gibran did pick up some techniques from taking art classes at UCF, she said. “I took a printmaking class there,” she said. “Now I use the linoleum and carve it, and I use those for texture. I used a few kinds of 2D techniques for my 3D work.” After college, Gibran and her husband opened a pottery studio at their house, and in 2004, a gallery in Downtown DeLand. She also taught art classes at the elementary-, middle- and high-school levels in Volusia County’s public schools. The gallery closed around the time the Great Recession began, but Gibran continued creating. “Sometimes it was making to sell, but sometimes it was making because I felt compelled to make,” she said. In 2014, Gibran left teaching and became a full-time studio artist. “It’s like anybody else who’s self-employed — sometimes everything easy, and sometimes everything a little harder,” she said. “In the summertime, there aren’t any art festivals, because it’s so hot in Florida. That’s kind of my hibernation time.”

In 2014, Gibran left teaching and became a full-time studio artist. In fact, most of the work Gibran will be showing at this year’s Fall Festival of the Arts consists of pieces she’s made from May to September. Those works range from functional pieces like bowls, to decorative works like intricately designed vases. “When I make the functional work, I’m sitting down, and it’s very rhythmic, she said. “I think I’m going to make bowls or mugs, and I make a batch of them, like 20 of them at a time. It’s very rhythmic. Other works have a more intricate process, often beginning with inspiration found in nature. “For my more sculptural work, like my vases or my wall sculptures, it starts as a sketch in my notebook, Gibran said. “Sometimes, at the beach, I find something that washes up, or we go to Hontoon Island and go on walks, and I find a form in nature that is interesting. Gibran next makes a small piece, or maquette, to work out some of the design
elements of her work before scaling it up into a full-size sculpture. “Most of them are single elements, or two or three different elements formed that are repeated, because I’m looking at the relationships between the different shapes,â€? Gibran said. Those elements can be things like leaves or seedpods that are used to decorate a vase, for example. In all, Gibran is happy and humbled to be the featured artist at this year’s Fall Festival. It’s a show like none other, in large part because of how the DeLand community supports it. “What always strikes me about the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts is how much the community is really proud of it, and [how it] really comes out,â€? she said. “At other festivals ‌ there’s not as much hometown pride, I’ve noticed.â€? “When I do the DeLand festival, people say, ‘Oh, you’re from here!’ and they’re really proud of it.â€?

The libretto, or story, was written by Emanuel Theatre Schikaneder. “The Magic Flute was Mozart’s final opera that was composed during a time when opera was mostly composed in Italian; however, Mozart decided to use a German text that was still in the Italian style and with a spoken dialogue,” Franks said. “Stetson Opera Theatre will be performing many arias, duets and ensembles from both acts of the opera, including the famous Queen of the Night aria with its three high Fs.” DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts attendees have a chance to watch a performing art that dates back to the 16th century. “The Magic Flute is one of Mozart’s most fanciful operas, with colorful characters in a fairy-tale-like story that’s great for all ages,” Franks said. “Stetson Opera Theatre enjoys bringing opera to unexpected places and to an audience who may not have experienced opera before.” Experience the fully costumed opera in its entirety with the Stetson University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Anthony Hose, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 13, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 15, at the DeLand High School Theater Center, 800 N. Hill Ave. Tickets for that production cost $10 for adults and $5 for youth, and are available online at stetson.edu/music-tickets or at the door. — Carr writes for Stetson University.

From ancient Greece, to even the modern Olympics, poetry slams have combined the art of the written word with the skill of oration. “Poetry slams were an Olympic event until 1948,” Campbell said. And now, DeLand, befitting its moniker of the Athens of Florida, is becoming a spot to be for aspiring spoken-word poets and writers. “We’re bringing light to our county,” co-founder Vivian Campbell said. “We want to give young people the chance to show their talents and really make that space for them.” “People in the poetry slam world — they know where DeLand is,” Kevin Campbell said. “If you love poetry, this is something you can’t miss.” All are welcome, the Campbells said. The poetry-slam event at the Fall Festival of the Arts will be a competition: first place will take home $1,000, second place $500, and third place $200. The event is free to attend, but the Campbells urge anyone who wants to compete to register online at www.creativehappiness.org or email macdelandslam@gmail.com for details. The event is set for 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, in Chess Park, 112 W. Indiana Ave. in Downtown DeLand. In the event of rain, the poetry slam will be 3-6 p.m. at The Blind Pig pub, 148 W. New York Ave. For more, see https://www.facebook.com/events/500037854167107/.

Nurturing the next generation of artists
BEACON PHOTOS/MARSHA MCLAUGHLIN
SHOW WITHIN A SHOW — Young Volusia County artists have their own juried art show within the Fall Festival of the Arts, and you’re invited to visit. The exhibition, open both days during the Fall Festival, is in the rotunda of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center at 123 W. Indiana Ave. The exhibition will feature the artwork of more than 1,600 students in 30-plus public and private schools in Volusia County. An awards ceremony for the Youth Art division will take place at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the rotunda. Also as part of the festival’s Youth Art commitment, Fall Festival visitors can take part in learning opportunities, hands-on art projects, face painting and other youth-oriented activities — all free — in the special area set up in the parking lot just south of The Table restaurant, in the 100 block of South Woodland Boulevard, on the east side of the street. In the photo above, visitors browse the Youth Art exhibit during the 2018 Fall Festival, while, at right, Marcie Warner shows her 3D works in 2018.

Taking a risk BY ANTHONY DeFEO anthony@beacononlinenews.com
Sculptor Mila Belle is exhibiting for the first time in this year’s DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts, but she’s no stranger to the festival or the arts in DeLand. “I was a DeLand Museum of Art camp kid,” she recalled. “I remember being at summer art camp and making this elaborate tower with scrap wood and painting it black and then scatter-painting it with all different colors, and [sculptor and former museum director] Harry Messersmith was just going crazy with how good it was.” That would mark Belle’s first real experience with sculpting. Her exposure to the DeLand Fall Festival came early, as well. “I attended the festival for years, around the time it started,” she said. “It was always a great place to experience art outside of museums and galleries.” Walking into each booth of each exhibiting artist was like going to another world, she said. “What was so cool about experiencing the festival is that in every artist’s tent, you get to walk into their little world, and just see what kind of medium they’re in,” Belle said. “I think every art festival is just a little microcosm of the art that’s out there.” Belle creates her art through metalworking — mostly steel — but she also does some clay-based works. “The metalwork right now is very 2D sculpCONTINUED ON FACING PAGE READY, SET, SHOW — Sculptor Mila Belle, at left, is ready to show her works for the first time at the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts. It’s a city, but it really has a small-town vibe, and it really values the arts in a way that a lot of places don’t.” She pointed to support from groups like the MainStreet DeLand Association and the Rotary Clubs, and from local businesses. She also appreciates that the Fall Festival is promoted year-round. “And as an artist, that’s really special for us, to see it promoted all year long,” Belle said. “When you do a festival, it’s such a risk to put yourself out there.”
