Spotlight on some Fall Festival of the Arts newcomers BY NOAH HERTZ noah@beacononlinenews.com
The Fall Festival of the Arts brings together some of the most talented artists in and around DeLand, as well as artists from far and wide, to show off their works in DeLand. Here are some of the Festival’s newcomers. Sue and Charley Dellinger Art comes in all shapes and sizes. But not everyone can, say, sweep their floor with an art piece, can they? Sue and Charley Dellinger, two Orange Park artists, are creating brooms that are pretty enough to hang on your wall but functional enough to still use. “Our brooms are primarily art-type brooms, which means they have a lot of character,” Charley Dellinger told The Beacon. “It’s functional art. You could put it on the wall and then take it off the wall
and sweep with it. But a lot of people say it’s too pretty to sweep.” The Dellingers are a team — each using their skills to put together their unique art pieces. Their art brooms are made with recycled wood for the handles and highquality “broom corn,” the sorghum fibers that make up the broom’s tassels. “When they come around our booth, we find that people say, ‘That’s unique!’” Charley Dellinger told Th Beacon. Their works of art certainly are unique, too. Sue Dellinger estimates there are approximately 200 broom makers across the U.S. Not only are there a limited number of artisan broom makers, but the Dellingers don’t sell their works online, either. “It’s like a painter painting three of the same picture of a duck,” Charley Dellinger said. “We wanted to create something that would be unique. Everybody would say, ‘This is my broom; it’s not like any other broom.’” Scott and Jenny Martin Michigan-based ceramists Scott and Jenny Martin make art you have to look at more than once to understand. Their clay creations are a bit unorthodox compared to the vases and platters typically expected of pottery. “They’re like little sculptures that grow on the wall,” Scott Martin said. “They have a very organic look. It’s going to strike you right away with deep, vivid colors.” The Martins have been making and selling their ceramics since 2008. With their summer home in Sarasota, their works are inspired by creatures they spot while scuba diving. It’s the glazes they use, Scott Martin said, that give the clay works of art their otherworldly beauty. “There’s so many different variations you can achieve with these five glazes,” he said. “It’s like paint: Artists can take five or six colors and yield infinite possibilities.”

Macrophotographer among the newbies Deborah Berry Daytona Beach photographer Deborah Berry wants to show people a brand-new world they’re unaware is all around them already. “I take pictures of colored water drops colliding. It’s very different; there’s very few people who do this kind of work,” Berry told Th Beacon. “It’s all created by literally a drop.” Photography of something as fast as drops of water requires precision and incredible timing, which Berry achieves through macrophotography, taking closeup photographs of very small subjects. “It happens in about 10 thousandths of a second. You can’t see it with the naked eye. It’s a hidden world not available to everyone to see,” Berry said. “It’s revealing something the average person will never see. Every time it rains, this is happening, but you can’t see it.”

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE — Rusty Hamil, a Realtor during the day, has booked the musical acts for the Festival since its second year.
When asked if any festival years stuck out to him in particular, Hamil couldn’t quite pinpoint one. “It’s all a blur. Every year has been fantastic,” he said. “We’ve had a few years where we’ve had weather events, either a monsoon or freezing cold. You tend to remember those more than all the good times you’re having; but looking back, I don’t have any complaints.” If you’ve been to the Fall Festival of the Arts over the years, you’ve probably seen Hamil, at least from a distance. This year, you might spot him, even if he’d prefer to remain behind the scenes. Hamil encourages attendees who are enjoying the art festival to have fun and remember the countless hours put in by all of the festival’s volunteers. “Without MainStreet, the museum, the volunteers and all the people involved, this festival wouldn’t happen. I don’t think a lot of people realize that when they go to an art show,” Hamil said. “These people aren’t getting paid. Buy some art!”

DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts Entertainment Chair Rusty Hamil likes to be “the guy in the background.” But after volunteering with the Festival for nearly 30 years, eventually people start to notice you. Hamil is a real estate agent with Greene Realty and a local by choice. He moved to DeLand from Atlanta 30 years ago and became too involved to even think about leaving. “I kind of got thrown into the art festival when it first started,” Hamil said. “It was only the second year, but I got thrown in to handle the entertainment. The festival’s grown a lot since then.” In the 1990s, when Hamil worked as a manager at Cafe DaVinci in Downtown DeLand booking musical acts, he was tapped to do the same for the Fall Festival of the Arts. His role has changed a bit over the years, but the key mission has stayed the same: booking musicians to play the festival. He’s the chair of his own one-man entertainment committee. It’s not an easy job, and he didn’t have a particularly huge budget when he first started. “Sometimes organizing musicians is like herding cats,” he said. But it’s not the 1990s anymore, and the Downtown DeLand Festival has grown to have multiple stages and plenty more attendees. For this year’s Festival, Hamil said, there’s a little something for everyone. “We’ve got everything lined up — blues, jazz, rock and roll, Americana, folk,” he said. “I’m really excited to have Eugene Snowden headlining this year. He’s a friend and also one of the best showmen I’ve ever seen.” Snowden is an Orlando-based funk and soul performer.

In memoriam Ryder Gledhill
, photographer and DeLand resident, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 9. He was 59. An authentic Anglo-American, Ryder grew up in Briarcliff, New York, and London, England, before settling in Central Florida in the early 1990s to be close to his retired father. Already established as a photographer in London, Ryder’s initial Florida lenscraft focused on portraiture. He shot everyone from prom queens to firefighters and became a champion of the body painting scene. When digital techniques transformed imagemaking, he evolved into a master of manipulation, enhancing pictures sometimes pixel by pixel. On returning to DeLand after a stint in New York, Ryder applied his ingenuity to the photography of artwork. He connected with his first artist clients at the DeLand Fall Festival and became the go-to lensman for many in the community. If you wanted to be accepted at a show, you commissioned Ryder to shoot your creations. A problem-solver, his studios at 117 1/2 Woodland Blvd. and in Glenwood comprised ingenious solutions for the perfect representation of an artist’s work. Tall, blue-eyed and handsome, Ryder spoke with a transatlantic accent and drove a Jaguar in a nod to the old country. He could often be spotted bombing around DeLand on his bicycle, and was a familiar face at Cafe Da Vinci. Ryder is remembered for his prestigious skill as an imagemaker, his keen sense of mischief and his fondness for cats. Family and friends miss him deeply.
Mary Ann Lawrence was an artist, but
she was also a key player in developing and sustaining what we all now enjoy as DeLand’s arts community. Lawrence had a leadership role on the committee that first conceived DeLand’s Cultural Arts Center, and she was one of the founders of the Fall Festival of the Arts, which she served many years as treasurer. Her artistic nature found its expression in oil and acrylic painting, stained glass, quilting, sewing, embroidery, and theater. Add actor, teacher, businesswoman, bookkeeper, Realtor, director of plays and former Miss St. Augustine to the list of Lawrence’s roles and pursuits,
Don Alois Nedobeck
and his whimsical animals were a treasured tradition at the Fall Festival of the Arts. Fans would stop by Nedobeck’s booth to purchase prints, paintings or calendars, and in hopes of finding and watching Nedobeck at work on his latest creation. He had something for everyone who loved color and whimsy, and he understood that not all those in attendance at the Festival could afford hundreds of dollars for a painting. At Nedobeck’s booth, that was perfectly OK. Nedobeck died in October 2020 at the age of 85. Lucky ones also knew him as a musician as able to delight the ear as well as the eye. Nedobeck had
and you get an inkling of the many skills she contributed to area arts organizations, and an inkling of the depth of the loss felt by the arts community when she died in April at the age of 80. “Thank you to Mary Ann, who set the building blocks of where we are today as a Festival,” said Becky McDonald, who took over as the Festival’s treasurer after Lawrence’s tenure. “She claimed her space in the world — with her art, her love of the theater onstage and off, her adventures across the world, and her laugh. Oh, that laugh! It filled a room!” family member Ronette Lawrence commented on social media, upon Lawrence’s passing.
served in the U.S. Navy and graduated from the Naval School of Music. A master of many musical styles, he was known for his playing of Dixieland jazz in DeLand-area venues. Nedobeck’s obituary describes him as “a husband, father, grandfather, artist, musician, author, daydreamer, pathological optimist and kind soul.” His absence will be felt at this year’s Festival.

Diversity & Inclusivity Committee: Black art, artists and stories New to the planning portion of the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts is the Diversity & Inclusivity Committee, which has developed a speaker-series program to highlight Black artists, art and history. “Most committee members are longtime residents of DeLand and prominent representatives of the Black and white arts communities,” committee member Judi Bradford said. Br ad ford a nd the other committee members have been hard at work preparing for the November event. The speaker series, a collaboration between the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts and the Museum of Art - DeLand, was developed to foster the mingling of the Black and white art communities. “We wanted to see what we could do to kind of knit the two communities together,” Bradford told Th Beacon. The initiative has opened doors for more artists to join the festival. One of the speakers was Timothy Babatunde Adebule, also known as Bushman #1. Adebule took his passion for art and used it to transform himself into a businessman.
“He is a real entrepreneur,” Bradford said. “He is not just an artist, he is also a producer that creates an art environment for other people to participate in.” Another well-known member of the West Volusia arts community who’s involved is Mary Allen. Allen is a retired teacher and is the power behind the African American Museum of the Arts in DeLand. She said the start of her dedication to diversity and inclusion came about with joining the National Council of Negro Women when she first moved to DeLand. This is where Allen was able to learn about and expand her involvement with African American history, art and culture. “Our services will continue to help educate through cultural programs, historical programs and educational programs,” Allen told Th Beacon. “Working together as one community, doing what we can to make life better for everybody.” Past lectures in the speakers’ series are available to watch on the Fall Festival of the Arts website, www.fallfestivaloftheartsdeland.com. The next part of the series is set to begin in January. Information about future schedules and how to see the lectures will also be available on the Fall Festival website.

The judges for 2021
Valerie S. Goodwin
is a mixed-media fiber artist and architect whose works of fine art are included in museum and private collections. Most of her work is inspired by a love of aerial views of landscapes and cities. Many of her quilts are based on maps. Goodwin’s art has moved through various stages from traditional quilting to an interest in abstract expressionism and,
currently, it is inspired by real and imaginary landscapes and cities. In some cases, her work shows an architectural sense of space with an archaeological perspective. In others, the network of the city and its built form are more prominent. These compositions work on several levels, from close up and far away as if one was looking at it from above. Goodwin received degrees in architecture from Washington University and Yale University. Her award-winning work has been widely published and exhibited. She also lectures and gives workshops nationally and internationally. For more than 26 years, she taught architectural design at Florida A & M University. Her book Art Quilt Maps: Capture a Sense of Place with Fiber Collage-A Visual Guide, is widely available. For more information about Valerie Goodwin, visit https://www. valeriegoodwinart.com
Nan Liu
began to study Chinese brush painting and calligraphy at a very young age in Tianjin, China. At the age of 16, Nan won the prestigious title “Young Artist of Tianjin” by the Cultural Committee of Tianjin City. In 1992, he was admitted to the Oriental Art Department of Nan Kai University and majored in Chinese brush painting. Nan was most influenced by the renowned contemporary Chinese painter Fan Zeng, especially by his use of simple and vigorous brush strokes emphasizing dynamic delineation form. In 1999, Nan came to the United States and studied art education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in pursuit of his Master of Arts degree. In 2002, Nan began his pursuit of a dual degree that included both a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and a Ph.D. in art education at Florida State University. Nan’s work has been exhibited across the

United States among public institutes, museums, and galleries. Many of his paintings and drawings have been collected by private patrons. From 2007 to 2020, Nan has held nine solo art exhibitions, and participated in 104 regional, national, and international invitational or juried art exhibitions, and won 17 awards. FEATURED DESIGN — At left, Artist Lauren Austin, unveils this year’s Fall Festival of the Arts poster. Austin’s work Merlin/ Tula and Owl Boy, was featured in the poster. Below, patrons of the Festival, and the public, attend the unveiling ceremony, which was held in September.
Lauren Austin, who created
the design used for this year’s Festival poster, has been designing and making quilts for more than 30 years. Prior to turning to art and art education full time, Lauren worked as a U.S. diplomat in Latin America, as a human rights and civil rights lawyer and as a legal writing professor at Syracuse University School of Law. Austin is a mixed-media quilter, using photo and printmaking techniques, dyeing and other materials to illustrate her storytelling on fabric. Austin freehand “draws” with stitches on her quilts, using an industrial-sized
long-arm sewing machine. She also practices new techniques in addition to traditional needlework: French knots, meticulous hand-stitched hems and indigo dying, paired with cyanotype photos of her relatives and ancestors, and hand-cut stamps of new Ghana symbology. She freehands faces into the backgrounds of her quilts. “My art is alongside activism. Being a Black artist means that you are political because you’re not supposed to be that,” she says. “You decide what you want to be involved in, and you do it deliberately.” “My heart is with Black museums, run by people who want to document and nurture our history and culture.”

Performing the slam at DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts
BEACON PHOTOS/MARSHA MCLAUGHLIN
COMPETITION — At left, Festivalgoers enjoy one of the poetry slams at The Blind Pig in Downtown DeLand, in 2019. This year, poets will compete for $3,000 in prize money.
BY NOAH HERTZ noah@beacononlinenews.com
The DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts is home to art of all kinds, including the performing art of the poetry slam. What’s a poetry slam?Organizer and poet Kevin Campbell explains. “Poetry slam is an arts competition,” Campbell said. “In this case, the arts in question are mostly a combination of literary skill and theatrical excellence. There is an element of chance involved, mostly due to the fact that no one can predict exactly what those judging the slam will like or dislike.” Campbell is the slam coordinator for the MainStreet Arts and Culture Slam of DeLand and the Florida State Poets Association, performing under the moniker “NoirJente.” As coordinator and a poet, Campbell loves the theatricality of slam poetry. “A good slam poem performance is every bit as entertaining as your favorite band or comedian, and often you will hear a poet use singing or humor in their pieces,” he said. “I think that’s part
of what makes slam unique as an art form — you can be entertained in so many different ways.” Campbell’s ties to the Fall Festival of the Arts go back several years. The very first MainStreet Arts and Culture Slam event took place during the 2014 Fall Festival of the Arts in DeLand’s Chess Park. In 2019, the poetry-slam competition joined the Fall Festival as an officially sanctioned part of the arts celebration. “We are very happy to return this year with an expanded three-day format and even more prizes for the winning poets,” Campbell said. Poets will compete for $3,000 in prize money. The winner across all three nights of slamming will take home $1,250, with second-, third- and fourthplace winners taking home smaller cash prizes. The 2020 Fall Festival of the Arts was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, but this year, Campbell and the other poets are ready to throw down. Want to hear some poetry for yourself? All of the poetry slams come with a warning: Performances may contain adult content. There are three poetry slams for attendees to
enjoy: • The first slam will be hosted by poet Bo “MF” Ellis, the King of Erotica. Per Campbell, Ellis is “a veteran of countless poetry slams over the years. He has amazed fans with poetry, comedy and theatrics since 2005. Bo describes his performance style as a cross between the raw comedy of Redd Foxx and the sexual passion of Hugh Hefner.” This slam will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at The Dreka Theater, 112 E. New York Ave. • The second slam will be hosted by Campbell himself. Campbell does more than just performing poetry slams, he also has a collection of poetry, Ruby and Blood and Salt, releasing in the near future. This slam will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at The Blind Pig Pub, 148 W. New York Ave. • The last slam will be hosted by Orlando Poet Laureate Shawn Welcome. Welcome, Campbell said, has been very involved with Orlando’s arts community, sharing his talents through various nonprofit organizations and events. This slam will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at Chess Park, 125 W. Indiana Ave.
