T

he Museum of Art - DeLand continues to review its operational procedures, enhance its exhibition programming and implement its membership and donor policies in preparation for application for national accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums. Addressing the credibility and stability of this corporation’s financial organization is crucial to the achievement of its future goals as set down in its Five-Year Strategic Plan. To this end, an Investment Policy was adopted by the Finance Committee. Soon after, the Museum engaged Dickinson & McDonald, P.A. to prepare its first all-inclusive institutional audit. According to the results of this examination the Museum “had no material weaknesses in its internal controls.” The By-Laws were reviewed, updated and passed by the Board of Trustees on August 8, 2013. In order to expedite the development initiatives it needed to accomplish, it was decided that the full Board would meet quarterly and the Executive Committee would continue to convene monthly. After learning that the Florida Museum of Women Artists (FMWA), located in the historic Miller/Fish Building at 100 North Woodland Boulevard, had decided to close and give up its lease with the City of DeLand, the Museum of Art - DeLand’s Board of Trustees asked Staff to investigate the feasibility of expanding its programs into this vacated facility. Following a thorough review of the FMWA’s financial records, discussions about the lease with various members of the City Commission, and calculating the impact of anticipated “startup expenses” to the next fiscal operating budget, the Staff concluded that both the Museum’s current financial stability and its projected Five-Year Strategic Plan could support this additional expenditure and that the annexing of this facility would provide the following benefits: • Direct access to walk-in traffic - a new audience composed of downtown pedestrians, tourists and business professionals • Increased visibility to benefit development and membership solicitation • Potential retail space on the ground floor showcasing Museum related products and seasonal merchandise • Space that could be reconfigured to fulfill “Social Art” community needs, such as artists’ studios, intimate theater, small concerts, etc. • Attract high-profile, international and national exhibitions and their underwriters Because the exhibition organized by the FMWA did not conclude until September 30, the Museum did not have the time to renovate completely all the gallery spaces prior to the opening of its first exhibit entitled Small Masterpieces From the Butler Museum of Art - DeLand

Message from CEO

George Bolge Institute of American Art; however, the second floor exhibition galleries and the stairwell were repainted, computers were installed in the Store and at the Reception Desk to keep track of sales and admissions, and the security system was extended to incorporate the first floor areas not currently leased. Since these areas will be utilized for sales space, rental and fundraising events, Teri Peaden was hired as Manager to oversee all satellite gallery operations and to supervise ground floor retail and rental activities. Ms. Peaden, a former Winter Park jewelry designer, established DeLand’s successful Artisan Alley shop Nest specializing in custom-painted furniture and eclectic home decor. To apprise its community and its local, regional and national peers of the Museum’s name change, the revision of its Mission and its expansion from its current location near the campus of Stetson University to its satellite location in the Miller/Fish Building in downtown DeLand, the Marketing Department embarked on a complete rebranding campaign. A new logo was designed and applied to all interior and exterior signage. To reinforce this change of philosophy, a new website was launched to include online membership registration and payment as well as provide the public with essential information pertaining to exhibitions, educational programming and special events. The new brand messaging carried through to social media platforms and in all media outlets. An additional marketing tool in the form of a triannual newsletter is planned for 2014. During the past year, with the cooperation of the Board of Trustees, the leadership and largess of Board President Judy Thompson, the loyalty of the volunteers and the unwavering support and expertise of my Staff, this organization has expanded its physical footprint into the downtown area, revised its Mission and rebranded its image, enhanced the quality of its exhibition schedule and implemented its inhouse educational programming, while at the same time, produced its first annual audit. In order to maintain this threshold of success, the Museum needs to focus its efforts and resources on soliciting major donors, foundations and corporate members, and to explore innovative marketing strategies to heighten the community awareness of its activities. The Museum’s programming initiatives attracted nearly 65,000 visitors this year. To many, what really matters is the private quality of the Museum experience and how it manages to bring art to life. And yet the enlightenment of the public has always been the compelling justification for growing local museums in this country. Founded on the premise that art and its humanitarian context were inseparable from education, the Museum of Art has addressed its Museum of Art - DeLand

primary appeal to the man in the street rather than to the artist, the scholar or the connoisseur, who are nevertheless, welcome on their own terms. It is for this reason that it has prospered and become relevant to its community and its citizenry, whose support it covets for future survival. Far from becoming a “mausoleum” for the visual arts, the not-for-profit organization has played a continuously significant role in the social and cultural development of its community and has influenced the lives of its audience in ways unforeseen by its founders.

George S.Bolge, Chief Executive Officer (Above) George Bolge holds a Master of Arts degree from the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University with a Major in Greek and Roman Archeology and a Minor in Museum Studies and Conservation. Bolge is also a Fellow of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, holds an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Nova University and is the recipient of the Butler Institute of American Art Medal for distinguished contributions to American Visual Arts. In addition to being a decorated Vietnam Veteran, Bolge has been a leader in the Florida Art Community for more than three decades and served as the Executive Director for the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art for 18 years and numerous other leadership positions in the arts. He served as Executive Director of the Boca Raton Museum of Art where, with his Board’s commitment, raised funds to construct a 44,000 squarefoot museum facility in Mizner Park. He has brought many important exhibitions to the State of Florida, including retrospective exhibitions of the work of Ansel Adams and Norman Rockwell, the graphic work of Renoir and major exhibitions of the works of Edward Hopper, Alice Neel and Andrew Wyeth. Bolge received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Art Museum Director’s Association. 3

Judy Thompson Walk, and a joint grant application for sculptural pieces at Earl Brown Park and at 600 N. Woodland Boulevard was submitted to the National Endowment for the Arts for review by mid-summer 2014. The Museum continues to work closely with other area cultural organizations, and MACDeLand (Mainstreet Arts and Culture – a committee of the DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce) serves as an effective vehicle for these partnerships. Through MACDeLand, the Museum participated in the second annual Smithsonian Day which offered free admission to all area museums and historical sites, including the Athens Theatre and Stetson University. Joint advertising and an umbrella website promotes member organizations by providing general information and links to individual websites, while local artists are served through the “Remarkable Art” tab on macdeland.com. Participation with the River of Lakes Heritage Corridor Committee ensures that the west Volusia cultural community is well represented in tourism brochures and on the River of Lakes website. I

t is with great excitement that the Museum of Art – DeLand delivers the 2012-2013 Annual Report to its members and stakeholders, and as President of the Board of Trustees I want to begin by thanking each of you for your support throughout this transformative year. Change sometimes comes about incrementally through deliberate steps taken toward a desired outcome. Just as often it happens when opportunities arise unexpectedly and are embraced. The recent Museum name change, rebranding and physical expansion are the result of both. Through the national and international professional associations of CEO George Bolge, we are able to present exhibitions of global importance and develop related programs that reach far beyond the boundaries of the State of Florida. The new name, Museum of Art – DeLand, Florida, more accurately reflects our logistical and philosophical position. As in the past, we will continue to support the work of established artists who live and work in Florida while providing exceptional exhibitions without geographical restrictions. The dissolution of the Florida Museum for Women Artists in the Miller/Fish Building in downtown DeLand opened the door for physical expansion into the heart of DeLand. The Museum has maintained a presence downtown for many years through the Legendary Florida Collection at the Historic Volusia County Courthouse, the Fall Festival of the Arts and the DeLand Sculpture Walk; however, use of the beautiful galleries, large retail venue, and potential event space in the Miller/Fish Building will help establish a permanent cultural presence on mainstreet. In addition to the new lessee relationship through the municipallyowned satellite location, established public art collaborations with the City of DeLand continue. The City provides installation, insurance and maintenance services to the DeLand Sculpture 4

Community partnerships, the dedication of the Board and staff, and the support of our members, volunteers and donors each contributed to the advancement of the Museum of Art – DeLand during the past twelve months. It is this firm foundation, along with a clear vision of our potential, which gives us much to look forward to in the future. Judy Thompson, President of the Board of Trustees Judy Thompson holds a degree from Vanderbilt University and has a juris doctor with high honors from Samford University. She is certified as a mediator by the American Arbitration Association. She has served as both President and Chief Executive Officer and Vice-President and General Counsel of her family’s business, Thompson Tractor Co., Inc, Caterpillar. Thompson served in Birmingham, Alabama, her hometown, as President of the Alabama Symphony, the Metropolitan Arts Council, and the Alabama Ballet. She also served as the Alabama Representative to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Since moving to DeLand in 2004, she served as an Officer of the Dressage Center, Inc., in DeLeon Springs, and, as a Museum Board Member, founded the Equifest Celebration and art show. Ms. Thompson has served as Treasurer of the Museum for several years and has also served as a Member of the Board of the Cultural Arts Center, briefly as President. She prepared and reviewed documents for the merger between the Cultural Arts Center and the Museum. As Museum Board Member, Thompson has also chaired the Development Committee and the Committee for Accreditation of the Museum by the American Museum Association. Ms. Thompson has served as an officer of the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts and as a member of the Steering Committee for the DeLand Street Sculpture Committee. Museum of Art - DeLand

Volunteer & Intern Support

T

he Dorothy Johnson Award for the Arts is a prestigious award established through the generosity of lifetime arts advocate and educator Dorothy Johnson. As a former Museum Board Member, it was Dorothy’s desire to recognize an individual or organization whose contributions, support, and service has significantly advanced the vision of the Museum of Art - DeLand. The Museum’s 2013 Dorothy Johnson Award for the Arts was presented to Ray Johnson. Ray is a retired architect, art lover and visionary, who has spent incalculable hours in his pursuit of Henry DeLand’s mission to make DeLand the Athens of the South, a place where art and culture are integral to the everyday experience of its residents and visitors. In that effort, Ray imagined a museum- sponsored project to bring art to public places while also enhancing the aesthetic experience, the cultural image and economic viability of historic downtown DeLand - and so came about the DeLand Sculpture Walk. In addition, Ray has chaired the Museum of Art - DeLand’s Facility Committee, using his expertise to ensure that the operational systems are in good working order and the facility, inside and out, is a warm and inviting place for its many visitors. The Museum Board, Staff and community alike, wish to thank Ray for his dedicated years of volunteer service. Ray Johnson, recipient of the 2013 Dorothy Johnson Award for the Arts

T

he Internship Program at the Museum of Art - DeLand

provides students with first hand professional experiences in a museum setting promoting an awareness of museum careers and other aspects related to a non-profit business. Museum internships are designed primarily for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in art history, art education, museum studies, communications, business and public relations, arts administration or information technology. These non-paid internships are typically available in the Curatorial, Education, Exhibition, Development, and Marketing departments. The Museum also provides a variety of volunteer opportunities for students in grades 10 – 12 and undergraduate and graduate students. Volunteer service hours are documented and can be submitted for school-based community service credits. Together with college interns, 28 Volusia County High School students volunteered for the Museum during the 2012-13 fiscal year, providing more than 1600 hours of service.

The Guild welcomes new members to its monthly meetings on the second Monday of each month, from September to May. The meetings consist of educational programs, hospitality, and friendship with fellow art lovers. Participation in the Guild simply requires a Museum membership and a willingness to give at least three hours of volunteer service a month. The Guild provides trained docents for tours of the Legendary Florida Collection at the Volusia County Historic Courthouse; it also staffs the Gallery reception desks and the Museum Store at 600 N. Woodland Blvd., which offers visitors a wide variety of original art by Florida artists in the way of fine jewelry, scarves, paintings, drawings, prints, photography, pottery, children’s games, greeting cards, books and exhibition catalogues and other gift items. The Guild hosted several receptions for Museum exhibition openings and special events during the 2012 - 13 fiscal year. In addition, each November during the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts, the Guild hosts the Patrons’ Retreat where light Museum of Art - DeLand

This figure reflects the efforts to identify new groups to solicit, to evaluate interested individuals who wish to serve on the Board, to capture the imagination of corporate sponsors, and to the development of programs that warrant the support of granting organizations. Memberships increased by approximately 30% from the previous year as we welcomed the members of Krewe Nouveau, a community fundraising group that designated the Museum of Art - DeLand as their beneficiary organization. A Corporate category was added to membership and the following businesses came aboard to support the Museum: Boulevard Tire, Florida Hospital 14

Membership T

he fiscal year 2012 - 13 was a springboard year for great anticipation of upcoming changes to and within the Museum of Art - DeLand. With interest piqued, Museum membership increased by 32%. For the first time, new and renewing members had the time-saving option to complete a membership application and pay their dues on the Museum’s website at MoArtDeLand.org. A new membership application was created to coincide with the online application. This new version provides complete details of the many benefits afforded to each specific level of Museum membership. As in the past, membership to the Museum continued to provide unlimited free admission to the galleries, opening receptions and gallery talks & lectures. Members also received a 10% discount at the Museum Stores and special discounts on classes, workshops and camps. Another benefit enjoyed by many Museum members is reciprocal free admission to up to 700+ (depending on membership level) museums throughout North America.

The most significant benefit of Museum membership is knowing that it makes it possible for us to continue serving the community with exceptional exhibitions, programs, classes and tours and community outreach opportunities. Suzi Tanner Manager of Guest Services, Membership & Special Events

Marketing Following many months of planning and deliberation, and through the direction of the Museum CEO George Bolge and support of the Board of Directors, the newly organized Marketing Department was tasked to develop a plan designed to improve the Museum’s brand and overall image. Three main goals were developed as part of the initial stages of a Phase I Marketing Campaign that began in 2013: • To create and promote a new brand identity that would result in immediate recognition with an association of a higher quality product based on the enhanced presentation of regional, national and international exhibitions and related educational programming • To create a consistent sharp look, and voice, of the Museum across varying multimedia with engaged messaging to retain current/attract new members and supportors and inform community constituents • To facilitate the online experience when searching for a Museum to visit when traveling to Volusia County It was clear, that prior to any rebranding to the physical building and to various print materials, the Museum website needed rebuilding to adequately represent the exceptional artwork and related programming Museum staff was continuing to augment. With the pivotal focus lying on Exhibitions, Education and Engagement, a new website was designed. The all-important museum website tabs of Home, Visit, Exhibitions (Current/Archived), Learn and Membership were streamlined, new user-friendly buttons for Calendar/Special Events, Sponsors and Contact Us were created, as were Quick Links to local, state and national arts and culture news feeds, and to social media and video outlets. The Store tab on the website was introduced, as were relevant keyword and HTML coding to optimize search engines and web analytics, which will be further developed in a larger SEO campaign following the planned expansion into the downtown area. The overhaul of the website took place in conjunction with the creation of a new Museum logo and the replacement of exterior and interior signage. This can be viewed on pages 4 and 7. Press releases related to the rebranding were blasted to hundreds of media sources, news articles were written by staff and local journalists; social media interaction (Twitter and Facebook) grew as a result of increased frequency and detail of shared images captured from exhibition openings, gallery talks, workshops, art camps and fundraisers. The development of a new Museum portfolio with branded marketing collateral began and continues. When completed, essential components will include biannual Exhibition Calendar brochures, Field Study & Touring pamphlets and postcards, 18
