A few special words from our donors “When my late husband, Evans, and I first became supporters of the Museum of Art - DeLand decades ago, it was transitioning from a children’s museum to one that would serve all ages. I have been pleased to watch it grow to the excellent organization it is today. In keeping with its original mission, the museum’s Camp Create scholarship program provides opportunities for our children to experience the fun and beauty of art, regardless of family income.” - Museum Legacy Circle Member Betty Drees Johnson “At Starling Chevrolet Cadillac, we believe in the power of art to teach, motivate and inspire. That’s why we’ve partnered with the Museum of Art - DeLand and support their Camp Create Scholarship Challenge.” - Jack Starling of Starling Chevrolet Cadillac “Institutions that offer (summer camp) programs need and deserve our support. We are most grateful that proceeds from our Patrons Day events allowed us to sponsor scholarships for Camp Create. We believe every child should have the wonderful experience of attending Camp Create, and want to thank the volunteers and the museum for making this possible.” - Marcie L. Camp Create 2014: Masters & Muses This was my second summer with the Museum of Art Deland as Camp Create Coordinator. It has been a blessing to work with so many talented and wonderful people. Our philosophy for Camp Create is to provide an educational environment where children can explore their creativity, enhance their knowledge of art and art history, reinforce skills such as problem solving, observation, and cooperation and most importantly have fun! Each of the seven weeks of camp had a theme based on different master artists, and the lessons and art projects were designed to highlight that week’s Bonny Bryan, 2014 Camp Create Coordinator theme. Having different teachers, lessons and themes made it interesting for campers who came for a single week as well as those who participated in multiple weeks. The teachers brought their own individual personalities, knowledge, gifts and talents which enhanced the campers’ learning experience. Our teachers were amazing and did an exceptional job as always. Thank you all so much. Another key component to the success of Camp Create was our student volunteers. Many of our volunteers assisted for multiple weeks and helped in all areas of camp. These incredible student volunteers contributed more than 1400 hours of their time, energy, enthusiasm and creativity. They truly went the extra mile to make camp enjoyable, and we are extremely grateful and appreciative of their efforts and contributions to the success of Camp. In addition to all of the individual projects that the students created each week, they also worked on a group project. Every week the teachers and campers toured the museum’s exhibitions and worked collaboratively to develop ideas for a group project incorporating the weekly theme. The result is 14 unique projects reflecting the diversity, individuality and cooperative effort of the groups. To all of the parents who selected the Camp Create experience for your children, we truly appreciate your support and trust. Thank you for allowing us the privilege of becoming friends with you and your children. We hope everyone who participated in Camp Create 2014 will continue to be inspired by their experience and build on that knowledge of creativity. Bonny Bryan, Camp Create Coordinator

Week One: Breaking the Rules (June 16-20) Taught by Tiffany Blushiy and Emma Field

Week One campers learned to break the rules by incorporating multiple views and geometric shapes and forms to create Cubist inspired 2-D and 3-D original art works in a variety of media. Cubism was an innovative abstract art movement pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. These two artists “broke the rules” by showing objects from many angles at one time. They believed that artists should not just present realistic views of subjects. Instead, they wanted to show every part of the whole subject. Other Cubist artists included: Fernand Léger, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Juan Gris, and Marcel Duchamp.

Week Two: INspired Environments (June 23-27) Taught by Sharon Fithian and JoAnn Raulerson

Week Two campers experienced the wonder of our natural world through art. They explored the visual, tactile and sensory qualities of things found in the environment that could be used to make art with reference to "sustainability". Art projects were designed to enhance our Campers’ artistic voice and encourage an appreciation of nature and ecological concerns. The environmental art movement began in the late 1960’s and has the power to change the way we view our world. Some of the artists who are included in this movement are: Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt, and Andy Goldsworthy.

Week Three: Color Me Wild (July 7-11) Taught by JoAnn Raulerson and Marcy Hall

Week Three campers went wild with color as they experimented with a variety of media to create original, bold, abstract masterpieces. The Fauvists of the early 1900′s, created art that revolutionized attitudes towards color in art. In French, Fauves translates to “wild beasts.” The Fauvists used wild brush strokes, intense colors and abstraction to convey the sheer joy of expression. Color choices represented the mood, emotion and symbolic purposes the artist was trying to express. Fauve artists included: Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck, André Derain, Albert Marquet, George Braque and Marc Chagall.

Week WeekOne: Four:Breaking Who’s Your the Dada? Rules (June (July16 14-18) - 20) Taught by Tiffany Blushiy and Emma Amy Holzer Field

Week Four campers explored a wide array of art in response to Dada inspired questions such as: Does art have to be seen in a specific place? Where does one encounter art? What is art supposed to accomplish? Who is it for? The Dadaists believed that art should serve to comment and reflect on contemporary events rather than provide an escape. The Dadaists meant to turn our world upside, to make it seem crazy, making us reconsider the items that surround us so that we might rethink our world. Dada artists included: Jean Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, George Grosz, Max Ernst and Man Ray.

Week Five: Express Yourself (July 21-25) Taught by Nancy Hatch and Jeanne Wolf

Week Five was a time for our Campers to express themselves! They discovered the connections between art and emotions in order to foster a deeper appreciation for art on a personal level, and gain a better understanding of how emotion can be communicated in the visual arts. The traditional goal of representing nature as accurately as possible was thrown out the window by Expressionist artists, and replaced with vibrant colors, wild abstract shapes, distortion, exaggeration and fantasy to create vivid or jarring emotional response. The following artists are included in the Expressionist movement: Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Paul Klee, Otto Dix, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, K채the Kollwitz and Edvard Munch.

Week Six: Bits and Pieces (July 28-August 1) Taught by Amy Holzer and Marla Basli

Week Six combined bits of this and pieces of that to create one-of-a-kind collage and assemblage works of art inspired by master artists. Collage and assemblage evolved from the Cubist art movement and covers a wide gamut from modern and pop art to abstract art. Assemblages are 3-D artworks consisting of different materials that "fits" the design and texture requirements of the artist. Collage is 2-D art composed of photographs, paper, newspaper cuttings, string, etc. Collage and assemblage art has been explored by such artists as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Hannah Hoch, Joseph Cornell, Louise Nevelson, Henri Matisse, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Romare Bearden and Karl Zerbe.

Week Seven: Life Is But A Dream (August 4-8) Taught by Nancy Hatch and Brenda Loring-Smith

Week Seven campers were amused, surprised and inspired as they discovered the whimsical and fantastic world of surreal art. Surrealists wanted to free their minds of rational thought, to write or paint the ideas that were buried deep in their minds. These artists did not wish their work to make simple, logical sense. This is why many of the themes for their artwork looked like scenes from a dream (or nightmare) with an amazing array of strange and fantastic things. Surrealist artists included: Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Paul Klee, Rene Magritte, Joan Miro and Yves Tanguy.
