Edith I. Starke Elementary 2019 3rd Grade Student Anthology A Collaborative Project with the Museum of Art - DeLand
We Too Dream Project Overview This anthology, We Too Dream, is the culmination of a collaborative project between the Museum of Art – DeLand and Edith I. Starke Elementary 3rd grade teachers Brooke H. Anderson, Penny C. Carver, Elizabeth M. Lizalde , Lorraine V. Worster, Art teacher Robin DeCamp and their students. The project was developed as part of the Museum’s Arts on the Grow education program for the exhibitions, 19th and 20th Century African American Art: We Too Dream America, and Purvis Young: Overtown’s Visual Poet, (January 20 through March 17, 2019). The project focused on the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights Movement and important events and people highlighted during Black History month.
The multi-phase collaboration included:
a planning meeting with participating teachers and the museum curator of education
a classroom visit by the museum educator
a museum field trip for all 3rd grade students
a post-field trip classroom visit by the museum educator with student activities
teacher supervised classroom research and writing on an important African American and student art project inspired by their research and writing
teacher and student assessments
a set of 21 books about the Harlem Renaissance, African American artists, and important African American historical figures for each participating classroom
teacher lesson plans
professional printing of We Too Dream with copies for the participating students, teachers, administrators and media center
a final school reception and book launch party for the project participants and guests
