What’s the Story Project Overview This anthology, What’s the Story? ,is the culmination of a collaborative project between the Museum of Art – DeLand and Edith I. Starke Elementary 4th grade teachers: Keyosha Green, Anika Hudak, Heather Turner and special area teachers: Alvernise Gentilhomme - Ve, Robin DeCamp – Art and Deborah Johnson – Media. The project was developed as part of the Museum’s Arts on the Grow education program for the exhibitions, Wonderland: Photographs by Kirsty Mitchell and What’s the Story: Selections from the Permanent Collection on exhibit January 11, 2020 through May 31, 2020. The project focused on the connection between illustration and text, with an emphasis on fairy tales, folklore, myths and narrative writing. Illustrations can be an excellent tool for developing students’ analytical and interpretative skills, as well as enhancing their enjoyment of art. Illustrated books improve students’ understanding of the story and provide them with an immediate vision of the characters, setting, and mood of the story allowing them to instantly respond to characters from their visual appeal. The multi-phase collaboration included:
a planning meeting with participating teachers and the museum curator of education
a classroom visit by the museum educator
a museum field trip for all 4th grade students
a post-field trip teacher and student survey
teacher supervised classroom research on fairy tales, myths, fables and illustrations
student created fractured fairy tale with illustration
a set of 21 books featuring fractured fairytales with illustrations for each participating cl
teacher guide for the exhibitions with lesson plans
professional printing of What’s the Story? anthology with copies for the participating students, teachers, administrators and media center
a final school reception and book launch party for the project participants and guests
