SCRAP PIPES |Design of outdoor space for ICE CAIRO center The Project being presented is the ‘ice cairo‘ hub outdoor space. The material used is a variety of scrap pipes of diffenet diameters and sizes. The different pipes are made of plastic & Metal. These scrap pipes are widely available in the Egyptian market in construction sites or in scrap markets (wekala). Pipes will be assembled (put together) to form wall particians and various sections of the lanscape including a stage and water. Other pipes will be used to compose various pieces of outdoor furniture .
OVERVIEW
The use of scrap PVC pipes is the domain aspect & concept of this project.Through the compilation of various sizes of the pipes; different diameters & different lengths, various different pieces of furniture can be formed to serve the users of ‘ICE CAIRO‘. Using the pipes only along with the environmental friendly bonding material, the creation of workspaces, exhibition space & stage. ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO IV
18
Studio on the Art of Structure and Technology. This studio’s primary objective is to link the two basic components of architecture- art and engineering. Based on a firm understanding of structural systems and their appropriate application to architectural design, projects will be designed to incorporate both aesthetic beauty and structural thinking. The influence of technology in the form of new materials and methods will be examined through their design potential. Three-Dimensional manual and digital models will play an essential role in the design development processes of this studio.
DESIGN IV|Design of Earth division in Cairo Expo 2030 Cairo Expo 2030 - Dichotomy of Humans & Earth The Cairo Expo 2030 is a project that aims to explore the Human Earth dichotomy. The project intends to raise awarness and generate a statement to the visitors about our relationships as humans towards our mother earth addressing several aspects and directions. The project consists of six different divisions, each of which entitles an aspect within the dichotomy; Humans, Earth, Water, Energy, Raw materials and Air. The division being to be presented is the ‘Earth’ division.
RESEARCH OUTCOMES
After conducting an extensive amount of research it has been concluded that the Human & Earth dichotomy could be tore down into a number of different phases where humans understanding and attitude has alternated towards mother Earth along with time. Observations showed that it all initiated by having both Humans and Earth living in harmony; where simplicity and survival altogether entitled the scenery. Later on in time, Humans attention started bit by bit to neglect the Earth and strive to explore and achieve the very purpose achieving standards of living through the means of invention. Time after time humans attachment to advancement has grown and has led them to harm Earth . Harming Earth and neglecting its well being and presevation does not only mean harm for the place we live in; it means harm to us. It is at this point that some people have come to realize their effect on Earth and started to strive to re adjust our attitude as mankind to re shift our focus back to earth and reverse the equation we have created.
HUMANS + EARTH ==> TECHNOLOGY HUMANS + TECHNOLOGY ==> EARTH
REVERSING THE EQUATION; DOWN TO EARTH In order for the building to convey the statement, it had to express to the visitor a uniform language of structure that would strike them with different emotions. The composition of the frame and folds had to be used in order to show two different entities in the building that complement each other: - In the first entity, the visitor experiences a fascination by everything related to the interior of the building, thus he is secluded from the outdoor nature. - In the second one, he is walking over the structure, mainly exposed and preoccupied by the beauty of the nature around him, more specifically, how the structure itself is used to beautify the nature around it. The key element of reversal being expressed on both the PHYSICAL and EXPERIENTIAL level.
PHYSICAL
Expo displays clear reversal through the literal reversal of the frame structure (from above you to under you) that work in parallel with the folds (from sharp edges to smooth edges, accentuating the blend with the surroundings) Folds of different sizes and different intensities of exposure to the surrounding landscape are the main language components that express the nature of various spaces of the project.
EXPERIENTIAL
Spaces of the expo are created based on the various stages of the human dichotomy with Earth. The building being in place of technology. -Harmony -Neglect -Attachment -Realization -Reversal -Shifting interest

Basement floor (Choice of countries)
Countries are selected based on cross-correlation study of top technological ranking in 2012 and epi ranking of 2012 (environmental ranking) as these are the countries that prove most interested and able to influence true change of our statement; shifting interest to Earth. Various designs of interiors distinguish between different countries based on their nature and character.

The launch of a blazing future from the heart of the dusk past.
PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT
The existing building lies in the NDP building in downtown Cairo at the Kournish. The building is at a very influential and important area of downtown as it is located beside the Cairo Museum, Tahrir square, 6th of October bridge and finally infront of the river Nile. The building is of great historical value as it is the location of the mainformer ruling egyptian democratic party led by all Egypts former presidents. Its importance has grown after the glorious egyptian revolution as it had been subject of attack and a main cause of the revolution in the first place. This is why this building should be preserved in order to tell a story.
PROPOSED MAIN ELEVATION PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT
BRIEFING
PAST VS. FUTURE The library is created to emerge from the core of the old existing building. The luminous curtain walls and high tech screen along with the dynamic form moving out of the existing building give clear indication that the existing old ndp building is nothing but a shell that the library has been trapped into and is finallyemerging from its core to become the dominant component. The remaining parts of the NDP facade will remain preserved with their present condition (burnt & partially destroyed).

DESIGN V|The Gateway Library. Re-Design of NDP building. BREAKING THE BARRIERS
PLANS
The goal of breaking the boundaries and creating connections on several different levels is amongst the main goals of the project.
Seventh floor
PERSONAL (HIGH TECH LIBRARY)
PHYSICAL
Library uses cloud networking & servers in order to connect various users of the library. People could assist each other in finding books. Send each other articles and e books, and finally discuss various topics with the common interest of knowledge.
The building is located across the street from the river Nile and from the Cairo museum on the other side. The library is to be directly connected to both in order to serve several functions. - Give locals space to walk and enjoy this beautiful location of cairo (users of current kournish and 6th of october bridge) - Give users of both the library and the museum an opportunety to interact and make use of both the spaces. -Water front activities such as a marina for feloukas & a water based open air theatre are created for people to use since there are no such places along our dear old river nile. The connection will be created by moving the kournish vehicular to the underground (creating a tunnel).
GLOBAL
Fifth floor
Huge High tech screen that displays material designed by everyone. Content could be anything that expresses users thoughts, ides, experiences or feelings to be shared by users with all his fellow egyptial citizens and media. It is an idea that enables a large collection of expressions to be viewed by random people. Other than this the screen could be used for : i. Polls ii. breaking news iii. expressions iv. commercial content

Building structural system is basically a reinforced concrete slab and column system. The old existing column locations are to be preserved although a number of columns are to be eliminated to give a more flexible space for use. New allocation of columns create a grid of 5.5m x 8.5m which are good spans to flexibly design spaces of various natures.
Vertical circulation There are three different types of vertical cirulation that enable the users to move from one floor to another. There are the existing staircases and escalators on both sides of the building that will be preserved from the existing building alongside the escalators that are placed in the center open space that add a sense of exploration and connect the different slabs together.
Horizontal circulation All spaces of the same level are connected through a rotating 1.2m slab alongside the elevation walls of the building. The slab allows the users to access the services and the buildings main circulation zones. They also allow the users to experience various views of the buildings interior overlaying slabs.
Services Services are located at the side of the buildings in excluded zones that do not cross the experience of the library itself. Services include bathrooms, kitchens, storage rooms...etc

“The interlace of the past and the present The use of layering and expansion to incorporate sidewalk into the building experience. The expression of modern techniques is elaborated through the placement of the ismalic pattern over the layer of glass. The creation of roofgardens on each floor is of an environmental and aesthetical value.

AUC Educational Hospital - Downtown Cairo Design 6 - 2013
For long has the image of hospitals and medical care in Egypt been perceived by users as dull, mechanical, contained and isolated spaces that promote and increase user’s tension and stress. This is due to the heavy procedures, requirements and measurements that are implemented to preserve and maintain the highest levels of hygiene and functionality that accompany the process of treatment and healing. In addition to the dominating phenomena of building to the fullest of allowable space to attain highest revenue while neglecting the user experience component and how it may reflect on their conditions. Today, with the development of architectural techniques and development of science a lot of doors have been opened and explored in an attempt to redefine and develop the standards of spaces to better fit and satisfy the human needs. In fact, recent studies have proven that the atmosphere in which a patient is allocated could have a recognizable impact on their recovery and response to treatment and medication. It is truly essential that a hospital which is a space of healing to provide a place that reflects openness, hope and a comfortable environment for its users in order to fulfil its potentials and provide better performance. Hospitals in Egypt could be generally characterized as enclosed, dull and overwhelming and this is why it is found essential to accommodate and imbed outdoor spaces within the entity of hospitals in a clear attempt of ‘redefining the outdoor’.
32
Observing the plot of the project and the nature of the context it lies within, it could be verified that the building is part of a densely developed and occupied zone. The plot located in downtown Cairo is aimed to serve a high occupancy load of users in an environment that is subtle, sensitive and imperative. In order to achieve the acquired environment, a wise treatment was approached in order to overcome the challenge of providing a suppressed zone of comfort and functionality in a relatively small area and harsh environment. Observing the calculations and space program formulated, it was concluded that the acquired FAR for the hospital was 6. Given the plot dimensions, it was decided to break the plot to several planes that would then rise vertically and interplay with one another in a manner that defined outdoor spaces embedded within the building core on different levels. This interplay has created a continuous language and experience for users of the hospital providing them with spaces that would break the tensioned and overwhelming atmosphere exerting continuous pressure; patients could restore their spirit and grasp an opportunity to have a break from their depressing moods.
Concept | Generation & illustration
In this task , the design of a general hospital to take place in the piece of land neighboring the AUC downtown campus is required.
In the process of dividing the plot and zoning the different allocations of departments and units, a clear approach and concept of treatment was developed to provide a logical and functional design component. The concept lied in the distribution of the zones of reduced severity such as the educational, administrative and recreational towards the outer shell of the building mass while preserving and positioning the therapeutical and diagnostic zones in the heart and core of the building mass forming a protected ‘nucleus’. The zones are designed to overlook the open spaces and to be sheltered from the harsh contextual chaotic environment of downtown Cairo.

Skyline clearly displays variation in height of the buildings and facades of the designated block. There is a lack of consistency if viewing the area from a wide scope (many buildings), however some consistency is apparent when zooming in to view the skyline of neighboring buildings that seem to have been built in the same time frame. Skyline is variant also in terms of material; there are spaces built on the roofs of the buildings made out of wood and sometimes steel unlike the rest of the building. These structures are built by poor people who are residents of the roofs.

The rhythm of spacing follows a modular grid throughout the whole experience of the buildings. A clear, neat and linear aspect generally characterizes the exterior of the buildings. There is no consistency of spacing between the buildings though; many of the buildings are built directly on the border line of the plot sticking to its neighbors while others that seem to be more recent are spaced from the neighbors. Buildings or facades are generally proportionate when comparing their heights to their widths. It is visually pleasing in a sense that there is a clear consistency of ratio.

Approach
‘The Cloud: Two Connected Luxury Residential Towers’ MVRDV
This concept rose from the analysis conducted, the focus and aims of the phase that were described above. The concept puts in focus the main aspect of creating a parallel-level of living that inhabits a very diverse function that contrasts with the existing site dynamic giving the site a new layer and dimension. The additions applied to the site are a key factor for the alleviation and up-cycling of the living, social and economic status of the users in the site and its surrounding.
[About the project]
Who? Project targets the workshop owners of the Khayala site. Middle class citizens that are responsible for purchases, sales and supervising the workers or craftsmen.
Why? The workers and workshop owners were re-located from the Basateen zone in the 90s. Their workshops used to be in their very own neighborhood near their homes, friends and neighbors. The Khayala site they were moved to is a site of heavy physical boundaries. Workers feel isolated and homesick.
How?
Urban Island Prototype 01 / Erick Kristanto
The Khayala site is a site of a rough nature being an industrial site of a craft that produces a large amount of waste, and due to the fact that the site displays a complete dominance of males and a complete absence of women; it is proposed to create a PARALLEL PLATFORM above the workshops in an attempt to partially segregate the two zones.
Approach justification - Existing workshops have cultural and sentimental significance - Project execution will not involve stopping these workshops from functioning. - Built based on special needs of each individual based on functional logic. - No space to extend horizontally. Doubling the footprint of the site.
In addition, the introduction of essential services and auxiliary functions that the site lacks will take place within this project.
Goals & Project objectives - Re-rehabilitation of ground floor workshop area - Creation of a semi-segregated parallel community - Addition of various service serving the community with various services. - Addition of communal space that breaks the harshness of the site. “To create a parallel platform floating above the existing workshops that works on en-housing a newly introduced community of families to this industrial site. The parallel community works on introducing residential units, recreational spaces for interaction and services to serve the community. On a whole other level, the existing workshops and ground floor are rehabilitated to lighten the roughness of the site and increase its productivity and feasibility to outside visitors.”

Since the structural system and grid used to support this building are situated within the core of the buildings and not on its boundaries, along with the fact that there is a modular consistent structural system, there exists flexibility in the process of extruding and intruding spaces. This along with the numerous configurations of residential units creates an interplay of masses and allows for an irregular, non symmetrical building with various social spaces.

Design reasons & logic
Axis is mainly inspired from two basic physical components:
- Creating maximum openings to the workshops in an attempt to expose the workshop walkways to sunlight. - Create intermediate zones that inspire interaction between community on an intimate scale creating a social hub. - Giving the workshop zone a third dimension and dynamic
- View to the newly introduced fruitful garden - Orientation towards the optimum North-West

In order to design the platform, there had to be a study of spaces and their hierarchies. The main spaces being the plaza ( far right of illustration below) and the main circulation node (far left of the illustration below). The secondary spaces are the nodes at which the main circulation passes through being open public spaces. The third being the residential buildings who should be private and could be reach from the secondary nodes who act as connectors.

URBAN DESIGN |Design of coastal resedential area compound BRIEFING The project focuses on a residential subdivision development located on a 25 to 30 feddan land that is overlooking two peripheral natural features. the project is to design single family dwelling units up to 350 meters squared ground floor area with maximum 8 meters height on 600 to 700 meters plots. With no back to back plots permissible and covering 25% of the total land, the challenge is to place and orient the units for best view and natural wind reception. The single family dwelling units has to cover 50% of the land area that ranges between 600 and 700 meters squared. The unit should include spacious reception and dining areas, living rooms, office, kitchen with outdoor access, a minimum of 3 bedrooms (one of which is a master bedroom) as well as the services and water circuits needed for the spaces.
PROTOTYPE CONCEPT & DEVELOPMENT The concept and approach to the design used breaking of the facade to create more surface area facing wind direction and to allow for better view for spaces located in the back. On the spatial level, all living and bedroom zones are designed for best wind reception and access to view. The spaces define a large backyard in the plot overlooking the view.

URBAN DESIGN |Design of coastal resedential area compound Proposal 1
Hierarchy of spaces: Using the design approach described this alternative is able to achieve a clear hierarchy of spaces moving from private to semi private to semi public and finally reaching public spaces. Each having their considerations and activities.
Vehicular vs. pedestrian circulation: A total segregation of pedestrian and vehicular networks is achieved through the focusing of pedestrian network on open public spaces limiting pedestrian walkways to sidewalks in areas that have vehicular roads. The pedestrian walkways are continuous even above the water feature located along the main axis of the project by the creation and use of bridges. Both networks cover all land to give access to all areas being public or residential. Solid vs. Void: The density of the solid is respectively low leaving a lot of open spaces surrounding each unit allowing for different auxiliary activities and services to be happening on the project area resulting into moderately harsh urban texture. The organization of the plots following the coastal line creates an interesting placement within the project.
