VOCE

Voices of Children Everywhere is an afterschool choral program that is offered to 1st - 5th graders in participating schools. VOCE provides age- appropriate instruction in choral singing, music theory and performance in a fun environment.

STUDENT PREVIEW

Middle and High School students have the opportunity to experience Opera first-hand by attending a final dress rehearsal. For many of our children, live performance and Opera is not something to which they have been exposed. In conjunction with the Student Preview, a Mobile Opera Teaching Artist visits the participating students prior to the performance to tell them the story of the Opera and to discuss their role as an audience member.

OPERA SCHOOL TOUR

This season’s Opera School Tour, The Tortoise and the Hare is an operatic version of the childhood story based on Aesop’s fable with music from the operas of Gioachino Rossini and designed for K-5 schools. With themes of persistence, courage, and acceptance, this tale teaches that possessing talent does not bring success unless that talent is applied with determination.

SYNOPSIS Act I Two young officers, Ferrando and Guglielmo, are arguing with their friend, Don Alfonso, who insults them with the cynical statement that all women (including their fiancées, sisters Dorabella and Fiordiligi), are fickle and cannot be trusted. A wager is made and the officers recklessly agree to test the girls’ fidelity. Above the Bay of Naples, the sisters each dote on a locket with a miniature portrait of Guglielmo (for Firodiligi) and Ferrando (for Dorabella). Don Alfonso rushes in with bad news. The men must leave for war immediately. Ferrando and Guglielmo drag in sadly to bid the sisters farewell. It is a ruse and the test begins. The officers leave and the girls pray for their safety. The sisters’ maid, Despina, is in the house when the brokenhearted girls return, Dorabella is hysterical. Despina tries to cheer her up by noting the opportunity to have some fun. In her opinion, the fickle nature of men should be rewarded in kind. Don Alfonso slips in to enlist (“bribe” shall we say) Despina to help introduce two lovesick strangers from Anduria to the sisters. The Andurians are, of course, Ferrando and Guglielmo in wild disguise. The sisters reject the ardent declarations of love and it appears the officers’ wager is won as Fiordiligi declares their fidelity to be like a rock. Then the men make their second mistake. They press the issue, pretending to take poison in despair over rejection. Terrified, the girls call for Despina to fetch a doctor. Left alone with the “dying” men, the sisters find it difficult not to be moved. The doctor arrives (Despina, in another ridiculous disguise) and affects a miraculous cure with the latest magnetic therapy. The revived Andurians beg the girls for a kiss to complete the cure. Rejection again. Act II Despina persuades the sisters to give the suitors another chance. Dorabella is tempted and Fiordiligi gets caught up in the

excitement. Each girl chooses the stranger they find the more attractive – in fact, they choose the other’s partner! In the garden the Andurians sing a serenade but conversation dries up as the girls approach. Don Alfonso and Despina suggest a stroll. Ferrando and Fiordiligi take the hint, leaving Guglielmo alone with Dorabella who proves quite willing to exchange Ferrando’s locket for a heart necklace from Guglielmo. Meanwhile, Fiordiligi is being pursued by Ferrando. She begs him to leave her alone. The men meet to compare notes. Guglielmo is triumphant, Ferrando is both heartbroken and furious at his friend’s success with Dorabella. Don Alfonso arrives to remind them that the wager is not over yet. Despina congratulates Dorabella, who is ready to run away with her new beau (Guglielmo). Fiordiligi is appalled and determined to stay true to Guglielmo (you see the difficulty here?). She forms a desperate plan to disguise herself and follow him into war. Ferrando makes one last charge and Fiordiligi loses the battle and admits that she has fallen for her new admirer. Now Guglielmo is furious and would fight with Ferrando but Don Alfonso intervenes. He says the best revenge (as if anyone should be thinking of revenge) would be to take the test to the limit with a fake wedding. A hasty wedding is prepared. Toasts are made and the past will be drowned in wine and love. Don Alfonso announces the arrival of a Notary (Despina again) with the marriage contracts. The ink is still drying when drum beats announce the return of the (ex?) boyfriends. The terrified girls rush the Andurians out of the room. Guglielmo and Ferrando quickly change into their uniforms and re-enter to discover and unmask the ‘Notary’ (to the sisters’ astonishment) and the signed marriage contract. The whole deception is revealed, Don Alfonso wins his wager and (incredibly) they all make up and live happily ever after (at least we think so).
