VOICE Cloud, social to accelerate growth in SME Convergence

S

in India. Though there were some initial concerns on data moving away from their premises, today’s next generation ready SMEs are pretty well understanding how ICT can accelerate their business growth and take them to the next level of prosperity as well as create better opportunities for them in the real time marketplace. With convergence of devices and the spirit of mobility, IT can transform the way SMEs operate and the ability of enterprise is directly related to its technology's ability to quickly transform and align them towards the changing business ecosystem. Today, more and more people are losing trust in advertising and depending more on social media posts of user experiences. This in turn will shape the feedback mechanism and the entire product design lifecycle. In the SME world, technology adoption has already taken over pen and paper scenario. And hence, mobility, social networking, cloud, and big data will be the four major trends for the next decade that the SME segment will be looking forward to and it is high time for IT vendors to start listening to the SME chatter in order to deliver exactly what this community needs.

Lenovo remains bullish on its India business, plans to sustain its growth

A

s one of the fastest growing PC markets in the world, India continues to remain a significant contributor to the success of Lenovo in the global PC arena. As the year 2012 came to a close, Lenovo achieved the unique distinction of being the leading layer in five out of the seven top PC markets (China, Japan, India, Germany and Russia), and further narrowing the lead between itself and the No. 1 PC maker globally. The company has upheld its streak of outgrowing the overall industry globally for the 14th quarter in a row and its impressive growth in India over the last nine quarters reflects this global average. Lenovo entered India in 2005, by acquiring IBM’s PC business and since then has grown its market share exponentially in all segments of the PC market. For the quarter ended September 30, 2012, Lenovo retained its numerouno position in the country with 16.9% market share – a position, it has maintained since Jan 2012 (as per Asia from Pacific PC shipment tracker IDC for CY Q3, 2012 - JAS quarter). Even as the final data for the OND quarter for India is awaited, preliminary estimates from IDC point out that Lenovo continues to grow faster than the overall PC market.

Cyber criminals set their sights on gamers

A

ccording to data from KSN, Kaspersky Lab experts recorded 7,000 attempts to infect gamers around the world every day in 2012. These attacks are launched in an attempt to gain access to personal user data, such as passwords to online games and online banking systems. Where games are concerned, malicious users attempt to steal avatars and in-game items to subsequently sell these virtual goods for real money. In the case of online banking, cybercriminals aim to steal money directly from real bank accounts. One of malicious users’ most favored tactics in the world of online games is, of course, social engineering — phishing in particular. For example, cybercriminals invoke the names of well-known gaming worlds and desperately try to lure gamers to their fake websites in order to harvest passwords from registered gaming accounts. In 2012, Kaspersky Lab experts recorded 15 million attempted visits to phishing websites designed to look like the pages of one of the largest developers of online games. As it turns out, there were up to 50,000 attempted redirects to phishing sites each day. Fortunately, all of these trusting users were saved by the professional anti-phishing system built into Kaspersky Internet Security, which promptly detected the threat.

s things are moving in the right direction, 2013 would be the “Year of the Tablet.” In retrospect, it was more like the “Year of the iPad,” as Apple’s category-killer dominated the scene, forcing competitors to table or delay the launch of their own tablet products. On the other hand, it’s not just gadget enthusiasts who have snatched up the more than 14.8 million iPads sold since Apple debuted the 1.5pound slate last April. The iPad is already making an outsized impact in state and local governments, with everyone from mayors and police departments to schools and legislatures adopting the tech tool for everyday use. More and more, tablets are turning up in the hands of techsavvy public servants – when we talk about US, New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg and several cabinet members use it to monitor city data and take notes at meetings. But cities and states increasingly are incorporating tablet computers for official uses, including education and crime fighting. The tablet trend is only going to increase this year, as more competitors enter the market. More than 24 million tablet computers are projected to be sold in the U.S alone this year, according to Forrester Research. Tablets in Action within India As far as India is concerned, if the Centre and state governments convert their stated intentions into actions, an explosion in tablet sales is around the corner. Several governments are lining up huge orders for low-cost tablets to either meet the computing needs of their staff or, in what is seen as a quasi-political statement, to hand out to citizens, mostly children. The intention currently visible from various governments adds up to 10 million tablets, according to numbers released by hardware body Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT). Although it is not clear over what period this offtake will materialise, this number is about five times the total sales that research firm IDC expects in India in calendar 2012. The government is fuelling demand for tablets to the most MOBILITY

Mobility Feb 2013.indd 13

extent. there are a lot of education related schemes where tablets are playing a important part when it comes to imparting the content and education. This January, the Central ministry of rural development bought 600,000 solar-powered tablets from Bharat Electronics at $72 (`3,600) per unit for its staff to conduct the socioeconomic and caste census. In the pipeline is a jumbo-sized order of 5.86 million tablets from the ministry of human resources and development, which it plans to give out at a subsidised price of $35 (`1,750). The first phase of this is for 100,000 units of the Aakash tablet, the second version of which is due to be released by Canadian manufacturer Datawind next month. Also waiting in the files are significant orders from at least four state governments - Goa, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh that went to polls in the past two years and whose ruling parties made the free supply of tablets an election promise. UP, for example, has promised free tablets to all students clearing the class 10 exam and Tamil Nadu the same to all students in government schools. And then, in what could set a precedent, there's also a plan to procure 795 tablets for Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs (members of Parliament) to reduce their consumption of paper. According to IDC, 250,000 tablets were sold in India in calendar 2011, which is expected to increase to 1.74 million in 2012. The government's appetite for lowcost tablets is birthing manufacturing businesses. For example, Wish Tel, which started in surveillance systems (like security cameras), entered tablet manufacturing in December 2011 with the specific intention of catering to government demand. The company participated in the HRD ministry's low-cost tablet bid and was the second-lowest bidder, after Datawind. It has invested Rs 70 crore in a unit in Ahmedabad that has the ability to assemble 30,000 tablets every month. Micromax is another player which is targeting the tablet market in a big way. Another home grown player in tablets is Simmtronics. This company is delivering truly www.mobilityindia.com

Indian manufactured products which are giving tough competition to global brands on not only home turf but globally as well. Pantel, another player, started in February 2012, with an assembly unit in China and Bangalore. The company imports tablets from China and sells half of its 100,000 units outside India. The tablet computer market is exploding. At last count there were more than 200 models that someone could use to do Web browsing, e-mail, word processing and general office tasks on the go. They run everything from full versions of Windows to various flavors of Android to BlackBerry to Apple’s iOS, and take many different forms, from near-smart phones to powerful computers with giant displays. What Government looks for? But not all tablets are created equal, or for the same purpose. Some are great for entertainment but not so good for conducting business. Others are great for working, but not as a personal device. And putting a tablet into government service is a further step in performance that few devices can take. When we look at what makes a good tablet for government, the field narrows down pretty quickly. For a government agency to feel comfortable deploying a tablet, it needs to have several features, the most important of which is security. A tablet should have multiple authentication methods when booting, be able to encrypt files and have the ability to connect securely to government networks. If it can erase its files if stolen or provide clues to aid in recovery, so much the better. Secondly, a government tablet should be at least somewhat rugged. Too much depends on the device to have it wiped out by a bump off a coffee table. Finally, like all tablets, it should be easy to use and have great battery life. That’s not too much to ask, is it? Demand for mobile devices is high among government employees as well, leading many agencies to reallocate funding for laptops in favor of tablets. Moving forward this trend is likely to continue and take tablet market to the next level of growth and profitability. February 2013 | 13

Cover Story Mittal from NEC says that as organizations start attracting young talent, BYOD will be reality soon. “In fact some of the enterprises have started pilots around BYOD. Currently securing external devices is challenge because the on-premise applications are not designed to be enforce common policies which can be managed centrally as security (such as authentication and authorization) are built within applications. Technologies such Open authentication, authorization, enforcing common policies on multiple application , and application access on web will be some of key consideration for mainstream adoption of BYOD,:” he adds on. Putting his thoughts forward on BYOD, Srikanth Karnakota from Microsoft says that Cloud is much more secure compared to the security that exists in most of the internal environments companies have. “We also build Disaster Recovery Management solutions into the cloud which add safety to the security. Nowadays tons of customers are using these cloud services. Security in the cloud is no longer an issue. It is just a matter of Cost-Benefit analysis for individuals as well as businesses while using the cloud. Yes, many organizations have concerns about the security associated with BYOD, because certain data is in the possession of the employees when they are outside the office. But now they are many solutions that help to manage data that the employees access and store with them. These solutions will allow the employee to access only certain data that he is authorized to access. Hence BYOD does not add any extra element of insecurity,” he explains.

enforced standards are on the horizon (compare this with strict environmental requirements for factories or financial regulation for banks). Indeed, regulation is frequently a consequence of systemic failure. Until recently, most cloud providers used their own proprietary technology and there was significant scope for security flaws as well as vendor lock-in; migrating from one cloud provider to another was almost impossible. But recently, many companies have joined hands and tried to come up with a mutually agreed "standard" for cloud computing, hoping to improve the security and interoperability of the entire cloud computing space. OpenStack and CloudStack are two such efforts, supported by many big companies. It remains to be seen how wide the consolidation can span, and there is still a long way to go, but these efforts are certainly a step in the right direction. Until such a standard becomes pervasive, we need to be careful as cloud service consumers about how we utilize the cloud. It would be prudent to stick with reputable and proven companies such as Amazon or Rackspace,” Majmudar explains. Explaining the cloud offering, Amit from Dell says that most of the customers understand both the immediate and the long term advantages of adopting the cloud. “Cloud is their future. Their challenge is how they can get there with the least disruption to their organization. At Dell we believe that each customer will have a different path to the cloud but whatever that is, cloud should work for them, not the other way around. Our customers want a provider that is easy to do business with and that helps them get what they want when they want it. Dell offers a highly simplified path to the cloud though solutions built on a foundation of Open, Integrated and Secure Cloud. We help our customers take a pragmatic approach when adopting cloud, adopt cloud as a business strategy and not a technology, and give IT back time and money to drive business innovation,” he adds on.

uried inside many of the latest smartphones is a capability that few people take advantage of. A feature called tethering lets a phone go beyond talk, email and Web surfing to act as a mobile hotspot that can supply Web access to nearby computers, tablets and other devices. It lets smartphone users always have the Web with them without taking any extra equipment along. Like dedicated mobile hotspot devices, these phones connect to a mobile data network and then act as a Wi-Fi router, distributing the bandwidth to nearby clients. There is a price to pay for the convenience that hotspot phones provide: There are networks that charge an additional fee to use tethering. On the other hand, you don't have to worry about finding a public Wi-Fi hotspot or having another device to buy, lug around, keep charged and accidentally leave behind. What is tethering? Tethering is the ability to share a smartphone's Internet connection with computers or other devices. It can be accomplished by connecting the devices with a USB cable, a Bluetooth wireless link or a Wi-Fi connection. This story concentrates on Wi-Fi hotspot tethering because it's convenient and can service more than one client at a time — and because just about all laptops and tablets have Wi-Fi built in these days. How does a hotspot phone work? After connecting to the mobile phone data network, the smartphone can distribute its Internet connection to several clients via a Wi-Fi connection. Any Wi-Fi-enabled computer or tablet can connect to it, and the real bonus is that the Wi-Fi router is inside your phone so there's no extra stuff to carry with you and no other device to recharge. Does Wi-Fi tethering make the phone any bigger or heavier? No. Wi-Fi tethering requires that the phone have a Wi-Fi chip built in, but smartphones already have this for connecting at Internet cafÊs or at the office. The hotspot ability is enabled by software and doesn't add to the bulk of a phone. In fact, there are hotspot phones that weigh as little as 3.2 oz. Is the setup hard to do? Anyone who's set up a Wi-Fi router or used a mobile hotspot can enable Wi-Fi tethering. To get the phone to act as a Wi-Fi hotspot, you need to start the tethering app by tapping on its icon; it usually has some variation of "mobile hotspot" in its name so it's hard to miss. The details vary based on the phone in question, but after clicking a box to turn the hotspot on, you'll typically need to configure it by typing in a network name, choosing its encryption type and designating a security password. (You only have to do this once.) Most hotspot phones are up to date with WPA2 protection so that outsiders can't tap into your mobile network or read any data. Setup takes a couple of minutes; when you're done, the phone is ready to be used as a hotspot. How difficult is it to connect devices to the phone's hotspot? It's no more difficult to connect a notebook or tablet to a hotspot smartphone than it is to connect one to a home or office Wi-Fi router. The network name shows up on the Wi-Fi connection screen, and you are required to type in the network's password the first time you connect. After that, you can set it up to connect automatically. What clients can connect to the hotspot and how many clients will it support? A hotspot phone can link to any device that has Wi-Fi networking. I've used hotspot phones with various laptops, an iPad and several Android tablets. The phone can supply an Internet connection to as many as 5 to 8 clients, depending on the model. Be warned, though -- the connection speed is often not enough to spread across several users, and you might be disappointed.

Securing Smartphone A W

ith more and more enterprises going in for better and efficient mobility driven applications, the latest smartphone applications foster more mobility and productivity than ever before—as long as a secure mobile network is in place. It’s no secret: Smartphones are infiltrating the corporate world and making employees more productive. Their use is no longer dictated by IT departments that provision them to executives and salespeople. And thanks to increased processing speeds and the availability of a wide range of corporate and consumer applications, the role of the smartphones is growing—as well as the risk they potentially 22 | February 2013

pose to the corporate network. More than 40 percent of smartphone users have clicked on a link in an e-mail received on their phone. In fact, according to the survey, Windows, Palm, and Symbian OS smartphone users are significantly more likely to click on e-mail links from their smartphone than from their computer. These are alarming numbers considering that smartphones have historically been deployed to provide users with mobile e-mail access, and e-mail is a primary vector for phishing schemes. Today’s devices are loaded with more memory and processing power than ever before. The average mobile phone has been transformed from just a simple cell phone into a www.mobilityindia.com

minicomputer. Naturally, users want to connect their minicomputers to the corporate network to access e-mail and business data, and IT departments are hard-pressed to grant them this access. The pressure comes in many forms, from the employee who receives a new smartphone for Christmas to the desire to attract a new generation of workers who want the flexibility to work from anywhere, at anytime. But connecting these devices means exposing the network to potentially insecure computing devices and the questionable applications running on them.

hreats benefits,

mobile applications introduce a number of threats to the corporate network. Consumer-based smartphone users can download mobile applications from the operating systems’ application stores. A Study of Strategies and Adoption Trends indicated that the median number of smartphone devices would grow 100 percent in three years, with access to corporate applications from those devices growing 196 percent in the same amount of time. And application availability is the primary driver for the rise of smartphones. The average mobile phone is no longer just a voice and e-mail device. Smartphone users have access to hundreds, if not thousands, of

applications at their fingertips. Employees at every level of business recognize the convenience and productivity benefits of running applications on their smartphones. But users are often unaware of the valuable data stored on their smartphones and of the potential security risks. Aapplications have not necessarily been certified, and there’s no guarantee that they’re free of bugs or malware. For example, applications such as FlexiSPY capture emails, texts, browsing history and telephone calls, and store the information on a server. Though marketed as tools to catch cheating partners and protect children, the applications are, essentially, spyware—and if the smartphone they’re downloaded on is also used to access corporate data, that data will be comprised. All that information is sent off to a server for retrieval by an unauthorized individual. Other spyware applications call a number on the user’s phone without leaving evidence in the call history, and then turn on the microphone to listen to everything said within the phone’s vicinity. It is challenging for companies to detect these applications because they attack the device, not the network. But that doesn’t mean that someone won’t write a piece of malware that can infect the network. Some consumer-based applications make seemingly legitimate use of the data users have on their smartphones. For example, laws against mobile phone use while driving have spurred the development of applications that offer text-to-voice services so that users can hear their incoming text messages. These applications take a copy of the message, send it off to a server that converts it to an audio stream, and send the audio stream back to the phone. These applications may be helpful to folks who are on the road a lot, but they release potentially sensitive corporate data to thirdparty sites. Even if an enterise chooses to block all third-party applications except for those pushed to users’ devices by IT, it still has to www.mobilityindia.com

manage data stored on the device itself. Increasingly, organizations are mobilizing CRM applications and outfitting field service representatives with smartphones capable of accessing back-office applications. These applications may be fully certified by the IT department, but their use means that corporate data is being stored on smartphones. Since smartphones are easy for users to lose and for thieves to steal, that valuable data can fall into the wrong hands. And smartphones are not exempt from disclosure laws if they are lost with unencrypted personally identifiable information (PII ) in their memory. If a smartphone is lost with unencrypted PII , a business can face fines, negative publicity, damage to their reputation, and lost business. Though it might be tempting to lock down smartphones to avoid data loss, this can negatively impact productivity. To ensure that users can take advantage of the functionality provided by smartphone applications and that corporate data is protected, smartphones should provide a number of security measures. Centralized Management: First and foremost, look for a smartphone OS that offers centralized management— and in order for this to be effective, enterprise needs must be part of the product’s DNA. Security Baseline: While standardizing on a single mobile OS is helpful in ensuring corporate data security and easing smartphone management, preventing the use of other operating systems can be difficult. Corporations should enforce a security baseline for user-owned smartphones. Enterprise need to realize that smartphones are an evolution of the PC five years ago. It’s not a completely different device. They’re basically PCs on the network these days, and we have to think of them accordingly. Consider how you control desktops and mobility, and how you can extend that to the smartphones your users want to connect to the network. The important thing is to have a clear set of requirements. This removes the emotion behind the decision to connect any one person’s smartphone to the network. February 2013 | 23

Lenovo A2107 Tablet – Primed for Performance

I

t is a fact today that Android tablets have matured from single core processors to dual core ones with quad core already flooding the China market and waiting to be introduced here pretty soon. With dual-core tablets already retailing, Lenovo has recently launched the 7-inch A2107, which features a single core processor. Read on to find out how it fares and about its chances of survival in the present market situation. Unlike other budget Android tablets (usually the Chinesebased ones) Lenovo has done a pretty good job on the build and design front. The A2107 has a very rugged frame which looks strong and firm. The shell is made from plastic with a mattefinished rear panel that feels rubberised. The front is only glass with black borders and there are no buttons, either physical or capacitive. the chassis is around 11.5 mm thick and has rounded edges with a dark chrome colour. The power button is placed on

the top (when held in portrait mode) along with the 3.5-mm audio jack and the micro USB PC interface. The right side has the volume rocker. The back panel has the company logo and a stereo speaker grill below it. The top houses the rear camera. The top also has a removable rear panel, which is a little more than an inch in size. This panel when opened, exposes the micro SD card slot and the two GSM card slots. The entire tablet looks neat, rich and very classy. The tablet weighs a good 400 grams, which is pretty heavy for a 7-incher. The Lenovo A2107 Tablet is a dual SIM GSM+GSM/WCDMA tablet only for 3G internet and no voice calls. It runs on a 1 GHz Cortex A9 processor and 1 GB of RAM. The SOC featured here is the MTK 6575 chipset, which includes the PowerVR SGX531 GPU. The display is a 7-inch LCD panel sporting a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. The cameras present here are the 2 megapixel main rear shooter and a standard VGA front facing. The internal storage on this one is a large 16 GB, but around 3.5 GB is used by the system storage for the data, apps and the operating system leaving the user with only 12.5 GB for data files. You do have the option of extending the storage by using a micro SD memory card. Connectivity options are Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, WCDMA 3G and micro USB for PC connectivity and USB OTG. Lastly, the operating system installed is Android ICS v4.0.

Dell Latitude 10 Tablet – The Elite Class

D

ell’s Latitude 10 tablet is a fascinating product. It is perhaps the only tablet with a removable battery. It isn’t trying to be the slimmest or lightest model around, which sets it apart from everything else on the market. It uses an Atom CPU and doesn’t bother much with multimedia bells and whistles. It’s built for business, although it isn’t clear how many of its target users would willingly trade their laptops in for tablets. In a world rapidly filling with hybrid Ultrabooks, the Latitude 10 is just a tablet—there’s no keyboard dock and no twisting or transforming body. A plastic stylus is included in the box, for scribbling notes and drawing diagrams. A docking stand, available separately, adds four USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet and a full-sized HDMI port, but you’ll have to add your own monitor, keyboard and/or mouse to turn it into a desk-bound workstation. While most phones and tablets these days look like they were designed to win beauty pageants, the Latitude 10 is staid and sober. The bezel around the screen is surprisingly wide, and the sides and back are encased in rubberized plastic for a good grip. In this tablet there is a lone USB 2.0 port on the right edge, along with a mini HDMI output and a 3.5mm stereo headset port. The top edge houses the power button, rotation lock button, SD card slot and twin stereo microphones. There’s a volume rocker and Kensington security slot on the right edge, and two options

for charging—the proprietary dock connector and a standard micro USB port—are all you’ll find on the bottom. The all-glass front panel is broken only by the mandatory Windows 8 Start button, which is a physical button rather than a touch-sensitive point. The bezel around the screen is over an inch thick on each side, detracting somewhat from the unit’s looks. You won’t be able to see the front-facing camera and its LED indicator above the screen unless you look quite hard. The most interesting side of this tablet is the back, thanks to the removable battery. The 30 Watt-hour battery which came with our test unit fits flush with the rest of the rear panel, but an optional 60 Watthour pack will stick out around 5mm. The, 16:9, 1366 x 768-pixel LED-backlit IPS screen has truly excellent viewing angles but is just far too low-res at 10 inches to look good enough next to competitors with 1080p or better screens. 16:9 is also pretty awkward for anything but watching videos. The screen can detect 10 touch points and has an active digitizer, which works with the bundled stylus and Windows’ on-screen input panel to enable handwriting recognition. Built-in storage tops out at 64 GB and there’s 2 GB of non-upgradeable DDR2800 RAM. Dell’s Latitude line is targeted squarely at business, and products such as the Latitude 10 come with options for specialized on-site service, inventory management, data recovery or secure deletion, remote management, etc. The device also uses Intel’s Trusted Platform Module 1.2 architecture for encryption and security in corporate environments.

f we closely look at the newer tablets entering the market, they all look pretty impressive and will definitely make it a tough decision for the buyer. Take for instance the Micromax Funbook Pro, Wammy Desire, HCL ME Tablet G1, the Zync Z1000, and a few others that sport a classy look. Same is the case with the newly launched Swipe Velocity. It is sleek, slim, light and awesome looking. Let’s check out this tablet and see if it is really a beauty with brains. Swipe Velocity Tab – is an 8-incher Dual core Android tablet with JB v 4.1.1 Experts do feel that the Swipe Velocity Tab is definitely one of the slickest Android tablets we have come across till date. Measuring just 10.5 mm in thickness and 330 grams in weight, the tablet feels very nice to hold and operate upon. The chassis is a dual-tone silver and black. The rear panel is made of mattefinished aluminium and is very neat and tidy with no large, distracting or gaudy looking manufacturer logos. The rear panel just sports a speaker grille, a camera and the volume rocker. Towards the left side is a black plastic patch, which highlights the markings for the ports or interface slots. Lastly, the front panel sports the 8-inch IPS display panel along with a front facing camera and nothing else. The display panel is lined with a black matte-finished plastic skirting, which neatly tucks in the display panel to give it a detail. The Velocity Tab packs a powerful ARM v7 CortexA9 NEON dual-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz, under its hood. The processor is complimented with a MALI-400 GPU and 1GB of RAM. This hardware runs on the latest Android operating system— Jelly Bean v 4.1.1. An internal storage of 8GB is provided for user

Mi

data, which is not entirely available for data storage. It is shared between the ROM, app storage and app data and the remaining available space of around 4.13GB is available for user data storage.

Micromax A116 Canvas HD – The Stylish Handset

E

asily the most awaited budget handset for the Indian market, the Micromax A116 Canvas HD is finally here and already is proving very difficult to find. Micromax managed to sell over 9,000 units on the first day itself and the demand seems to be only rising, and for good reason. This is the first handset, ever, in the sub-Rs. 15,000 price bracket to feature an HD IPS screen and a quad-core SoC. These are pretty remarkable specifications for a budget Android handset and it certainly looks very tempting on paper. But, as we’ve seen in the past, glowing specifications on paper needn’t necessarily translate to good real world performance. The A110 didn’t exactly blow our minds. Sure, it was a good option given the price, but the build and finish seemed unrefined and didn’t measure up to the competition in that respect. Can the A116 raise the bar for budget droids when it comes to build quality and aesthetics, and not just impressive specs? Let’s find out. The entire handset bears a striking resemblance to the HTC One X, so it scores high on aesthetics as well. The battery cover is easy to remove thanks to the soft plastic. Inside, we have two GSM SIM slots with the

microSD card slot in between. None of these are hot-swappable and you’ll need to remove the battery to insert the cards. The power and volume rocker buttons assume their usual place on either side of the handset and are easy to reach. The headphone jack and microUSB port are placed on the top. The Canvas HD is slightly narrower than the A110 thanks to the smaller bezel around the screen; it is lighter as well at 157 g. The handset is quite comfortable even if you don’t have large hands and fits snugly in your pocket. You’ll want to be careful where you place your phone, though, as the protruding camera lens could get scratched easily. Overall, we really like what Micromax has achieved here; it is definitely a step above the its previous offering. IPS panel makes a return in the Canvas HD, but instead of a lowly WVGA resolution, the A116 boasts of an impressive HD (1280 x 720) resolution, which makes all the difference in the world. Text is sharper, images are more vivid and crisp and the UI simply looks better. The panel itself has good viewing angles along with good colours.

The sides feature a mesh-like trim, Xperia Z, followed by Samsung and other OEMs. As it stands now, which does nothing for the cooling of the handset but is simply there the HTC Butterfly is the only handset in the market with a Full HD for aesthetic value. We like the attention to detail given to the power display that gives full reign over the high-end segment. Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos I9082 Value for Money

T

hese days, it is not easy finding a high-end dual-SIM phone from a top-tier manufacturer. The only one available in the market until recently was the HTC Desire SV, which is a well-designed and built handset with an impressive spec sheet but is heavily crippled in the multimedia department due to its chipset. This leaves the playground wide open for the just launched Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos, which has been making a lot of noise in the market. We quite liked it when we first saw it, and now it’s time to put it through our gruelling tests to see if it manages to come through unscathed. The Grand Duos looks like a clone of the Note II, but with the finish and build of the S III. The phone seems a bit chunkier than the Note II and that chrome trim around the edge will wear off with time, so it’s better if you use a cover with it. The finish of the plastics is more akin to the Galaxy S III. The rear cover has a fine mosaic-like pattern which actually manages to mask most of your fingerprints. The Grand Duos feels strong and durable

but is on the thicker side at 9.6 mm and quite heavy as well at 162 g. Just like the other Galaxy handsets, we have all the sensors lined up along with the front facing 2MP camera. The 5-inch display takes up most of the space in the front with a thin bezel on either side. When Samsung first announced the Grand Duos, there was a lot of cry about the low resolution display. Even we thought back then that this would be the Achilles’ Heel of the handset. As it turns out, the 480 x 800 resolution is not completely terrible and other than a slightly larger set of icons, it’s not bad at all. The fluidity of the interface can be attributed to the spiffy ARM Coretex-A9 MPCore SoC under the hood. This consists of a dual-core CPU running at 1.2GHz each along with 1GB of RAM. The SoC also has support for NEON video decoding extensions and ARM TrustZone technology, amongst others. The GPU is not the typical Adreno or Mali chipset but is a Broadcom Video Core IV.
