PANEL DISCUSSION

Panel Discussion was centred around l

Indian Mobile Handset Market: Opportunities and Challenges Ahead

l

Scope of Feature Phones Domestic Vs Imports

l

Govt. Policies (GST, BIS)

l

Key Focus: 4G, Price bands, Tech ahead

Some Highlights of Panel Discussion Mr Bhattacharya, VP, IMRB: For a right decision, one needs the best and right data—from internal and external sources. The data is important as it helps to understand the industry and the ecosystem and take the right decisions. Incomplete, erroneous or misleading data can result in wrong conclusions and lead to bad decisions. This can have a debilitating effect on the whole process, the industry and the economy. Next, the data sources should be reliable. Right data, correct analysis and meaningful interpretation are necessary while managing the organizations and taking decisions. Seeking opportunity is not just fixing percentages and aiming at numbers, but most important is judicious assessment of the right target segment and the best strategy to reach out that segment. For instance, before launching a smart phone, the vendor should have clear information in terms of his target segment, the demand in that segment, the state of competition, demographics, the future projections, etc before taking decisions. Mr N.K. Goel: Yes. If we compare GST to a soup, the dif-

ferent entities, like central government, state governments, the industry and the last and the most important entity—the end consumer--who often bears the effects of the policies but cannot directly make policies, all have different interests and different expectations of this soup. Now, the GST, before it is finalized has to accommodate the opinions of 32 state governments and union territories. At last now the GST taking a shape, but we cannot know exactly how this soup will taste and how we are going to digest until it finally comes out, seen in implementation and experienced in practice. The government has been struggling for the last 2 years to accommodate the opinions and interests of different entities with new hindrances coming up at different stages. Now the soup is ready and it will be served soon hopefully by July 2017. Each of us has to taste and tell finally how he feels about the taste as different people have different tastes. Though everyone will not appreciate it, let us hope it will taste well to the majority.

PANEL DISCUSSION

Mr Syed Tajuddin: As Goel ji said, the soup or GST is already prepared; now we should just wait and taste it, try to digest it and tell how we feel. We are still waiting for the clarifications as there are many concepts not yet clear. Let us wait and watch and hope the best. In my opinion, Make in India concept at present is more a wishful thinking than a practically beneficial concept, because there is a long way before our Indian ecosystem evolves to the state where Make in India becomes a reality. Now it is just ‘Assemble in India.’ Make in India is just a label we put on it. Many of the components are not available at present in India. And on the other side, it is not clear how this ‘Assemble in India’ well generate employment, prevent flight of foreign currency and make the national economy strong before it evolves into real Make in India. Government is giving tax exemptions that will benefit the manufacturers (or assemblers) but the government is losing tax there at the same time. Then this will affect the common man or the end user indirectly, because the government has to generate that lost tax from somewhere else which in turn will increase the cost of their precuts and services. So the government should focus more on how well the components can be made available locally to make the Make in India successful. Otherwise, it will be an experiment without a clear direction. Government should focus on development of the ecosystem from the ground level, to make the initiative successful. w Moderator Mr. Arvind Passey: Mr Tajuddin ji, please tell us how we can Make in India successful, rather than simply a grandiose plan? Mr Syed Tajuddin: First, the government should invite and

attract the component manufacturers from abroad to India. Next, the government should instill confidence in those manufacturers by developing the necessary infrastructure. And third the government should define the right tax regime that makes India an attractive destination to the component manufacturers. Right now conditions are not conducive enough to attract foreign manufacturers and there is no ease of performing business operations in India. There are a lot of variations from one state to another in India in terms of ease of operation. Also, there is a lot of data available in India—internal and also external—but which is not being used to take objective and results-oriented decisions. People still follow traditional methods, and Indian business ecosystem still advance to the levels to properly analyze and evaluate the available data, and then use to get the best possible results.

Mr. Kumar Deep: Vodafone has rapidly expanded its

4G footprint in Haryana and continues to invest in order to deliver a superior network experience to customers. Our 4G services are now available across 440 towns in Haryana, which is a strong leadership market for Vodafone India. We understand and support our customers changing behaviour and our vision is to provide them with the best digital experience by continuously expanding our 4G network.

Mr. Rajesh: “Indian economy is expected to become a $5

trillion economy by 2025 and to achieve this India needs to strengthen SMEs as it is a back-bone of the nation’s growth. As per the Ministry for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, 45% of the country’s industrial output is produced by SME sector for national and international demand. Over 30 million SMEs of India is the next big thing that central government will have to take care for. SME sector contributes a lot in terms of its GDP share, Employment, Innovation etc. Touted as the biggest tax reform of independent India, the new indirect tax regime is on its way to become a reality starting 1st April 2017. The final rollout of the GSTbill will have a significant impact on every business and consumer, in the new, unified national common market that India is poised to become. In this regard. GST being a destination based tax is widely expected to smooth conduct of business in the country with faster movement of goods, easy and unified compliance by reducing classification hassles, and avoid distortions due to multiplicity of levies and exemptions. It will increase market buoyancy and help to expand the organized sector. “The microSD card has been an integral part of the digital revolution by providing more options for high performance, high capacity storage for smartphones,” Since the popular memory card format launched more than a decade ago, microSD cards have been instrumental in driving new segments in digital imaging like action cameras, drones, dashboard cameras and surveillance systems, and have significantly impacted the evolution of the smartphone. Today, approximately 75 percent of smartphone models on the market contain microSD slots, according to data from Strategy Analytics 2 . Mobility APRIL 2017

With Bring Your Own Device (also known as BOYD) gaining increasing acceptance among corporates, there is an exponential growth of mobile phones and tablets even in the official activities. Everyone is waiting for the final version of GST that is expected to come into force with effect from July 1, 2017. Industry high hopes for GST.
