mobility July 2014
Dear Readers, This issue brings you two interesting stories. The first story will be on the long awaited budget. Telecom industry welcomes the Budget 2014-15 as an overall progressive budget. The rural broadband vision of budget will allow telecom companies to be a part of inclusive growth. Government’s 100 smart cities project will open further opportunities for the telecom industry. The flip side of the budget is it did not address the burning telecom issues such as retrospective tax, excises and customs on telephony hardware and equipment and TRAI rules & regulations which often stunt the IT and Telecom industry’s growth in India. The next story is on brown box (fake battery & adapter) market. Most of us who use laptops often find it difficult to buy authentic laptop batteries. We have seen many instances where users face problems after replacing the old laptop battery: either the laptop goes off or it gives bad battery backup
or there is overheating issue or sometimes more hazardous leaks and explosions. These days there are many small/big shops selling fake batteries openly displaying well-known brand names. It is a difficult task for a user to identify which one is genuine and which one is a fake. In the current issue of Mobility India, we are covering this story to educate users how to identify and avoid fake. We have written a critical review of this fake segment analyzing how consumers as well as partners can play safe from these fakes. Hope this will benefit our readers including partners and vendors. Also there are several product reviews covering smart phones, accessories and peripherals along with other interesting topics for your perusal.

"No health concerns due to mobile towers" Ravi Shankar Prasad
T
he Communications Minister told Lok Sabha that there is no convincing scientific evidence that the radiofrequency signals from base stations and
wireless networks cause adverse health effects and ruled out any change in present safety limits of tower and mobile emissions. "After due consideration of the human health concerns on account of EMF radiation being raised in public and the Report of the Committee,( Allahabad High Court) the Government has decided in February 2014 that the present prescribed precautionary EMF safe exposure limits are adequate and need no further change at this stage", The Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad
told the Lok Sabha in a written answer. The Minister also clarified that there is no order on removal of towers from hospitals and schools as Supreme court of India has "extended the time limit till further orders and the matter is sub judice. "In his reply to DEVJI MANSINGRAM PATEL, member of parliament, the Minister also endorsed the view of the World Health Organization (WHO) that there is no convincing scientific evidence that the weak radiofrequency signals from base stations and wireless networks cause adverse health effects. Responding to a question raised in the Lok Sabha on the threat of occurrence of fatal diseases like cancer was rising due to installation of mobile towers, Ravi Shankar Prasad said quoting a WHO Fact Sheet that "considering the very low exposure levels and research results collected to date, there is no convincing scientific evidence that the weak Radio Frequency (RF) Signals from the base stations and wireless networks cause adverse health effects." In his answer, Minister said that the WHO has referred to the International Exposure Guidelines developed by International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has already prescribed stricter precautionary limits for Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) radiation from mobile towers. The present prescribed limits for EMF radiations from Base Stations in India are one-tenth (1/10th) of internationally-prescribed limits of ICNIRP.

TRAI working on guidelines for modern telecom networks
T
he India's Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) body has initiated the process of setting up a series of rules aimed at modern networks that are to be installed in the country soon. These rules are set to provide special importance to 4G services which are gearing
up to start a major boom in the market later this year. The main purpose of these guidelines will be to regulate the issues that are arising, even as traditional telecommunication systems are moving towards modern internet protocol-based communication systems. This is resulting in the co-existence of legacy networks along with them which definitely needs regulations to be imposed. The presence of both these systems, could give rise to various operational, inter-connection and service quality issues that will need to be solved before successful migration to IP based networks. This is being addressed by TRAI now. www.mobilityindia.com

Mediaman always aims at providing valuable and result-oriented channel connections.
M
ediaman is one of the largest Information Technology distributors in India with wide range of products including, but are not limited to, memory, motherboards and laptop batteries of prominent global brands. They also provide their own products under Mediaman brand. With over 25 yrs of presence in the Indian market, Mediaman, headquartered in Mumbai, has over 40 sales offices and stocklocations spread across India and they are continually expanding their operations. With over two decades of expertise in distribution and an established channel network, Mediaman offers its vendors access to more than 5000 channel partners, retailers, corporate resellers, VARs & system integrators (SIs). Mediaman also offers a variety of business development services such as supply chain management, product handling and retail program management. As the Generation Next leader of the company, Digant Mehta, S/o Dushyant Mehta, in a direct interaction with NCN shares his views, plans and vision for Mediaman.
Decision To Enter Family Business Regarding his decision to enter his father’s business, Digant shares, “I joined Mediaman 2 yrs back. Even before that I had a fair idea of what my father had been doing. On and off during holidays, I used to visit him and see what he had been doing. Even I used to accompany him during his abroad trips. First, I was part of marketing team of Mediaman brand, our own product. Then we started doing business for a new Brand and Product range. Nearly a year after joining, my father started putting me into the mainstream business. Slowly he started making me understand finance, accounts, marketing, admin and so on. I myself did not realize how much I have learnt; I got familiar with many things and of course I am still learning. Every now and then he teaches me what the different aspects of business are, peculiar tendencies of business and how one should react to those situations? I started with marketing and I have come a long way since then. There is an interesting flashback about how I took a plunge into my father’s business. After my graduation, I was making up my mind what to do—whether to study further, to work somewhere or to join my father’s business. Then it so happened we went to Computex Taiwan. There I used to ask my dad what activities I should practice. My dad kept on telling me, ‘I will tell you later.’ During Computex we had a chance to share the company of the Chairman of Transcend, Peter Su. He casually asked me www.mobilityindia.com
what I planned to do for the future. I told him I had nothing specific in mind and I was just going around with my dad to see what he was doing. I told him I might study further or I might work somewhere. That time he told me,‘ Why do you want to learn here and there? Your best teacheris your dad. While coming back in flight, I told my dad I that I had decided to join Mediaman, our family business.”
Mediaman accepts and offers business deals only with decent margins and quality products Mediaman is one of the prominent distributors in the country. About the driving factors behind Mediaman’s success, their policy regarding channel, vendors, margin, etc, Digant explains, “As a policy, we at Mediaman do not do business for thin and risky margins. We always accept deals with decent margins so that we as well as our channel would be safe. Of course, we never hesitate to add value from our side. Next, we are present almost everywhere in the country. Most important thing with us is as a policy we do business with long term relationships with our end customers. We give them complete knowledge about the product and we also tell them the expected future trends for the product. On the other hand, many traders are interested in just selling products and closing the matter. That is the reason customers trust us and stay with us over a long term. Now we are also focusing on mobility segment, which is expected to give us better margins.”
Mediaman Facilitates Valuable And ResultOriented Channel Connections Willingness to embrace change is Mediaman’s key to its continued success. Mediaman continually innovates its order management and delivery systems to improve customer satisfaction, ensuring growth and higher profitability for business partners and
Digant Mehta
shareholders. Localized expertise and knowledge are the driving forces behind Mediaman’s IT supply chain solutions. Regarding their focus on logistics, vendor selection and the related things, Digant details, “Mediaman’s principle is to focus on proven andquality-driven manufacturers and Mediaman’s core competencies in distribution are better logistics, efficiently monitored inventory management, flexible credit financing for dealers, a national channel reach and an excellent reseller account management system.Mediamanprovides valuable and result-oriented connections for vendors and brands from India and abroad.
Mediaman Aims to Be At The Top In 5 yrs Time Somewhere down the line elders want to pass on to their children what they acquired as inheritance. But it is possible that the beneficiaries may not have the same ideas or zeal as the benefactors to carry forward the business built by elders. “I do not see anything uninteresting in our ICT business. Every now and then some new products or new innovations keep coming up and you see something interesting happening there always. Yes, sometimes things are hectic in this business but that has its own fun. What in my mind is, so far we have been selling other brands but now we want to create our own brand and promote it as actively as we did for other big brands. The most important principle that I inherited from my father is ‘keep Long term relationships like Family with the Dushyant Mehta Business Partners, Bring Profitability to the partners and stick to Ethical way of business,’” admits Digant. “In 5 yrs time we do not want to be less than a company of Rs 5000 to 10000 cr. Also, we want to make Mediaman a big brand. We want to continually maintain and upgrade ourbusiness skillsets, scalability and momentum.”

Bose Sound True Headphones Bose Sound True Headphones: Signature sound with a fresh new look
B
ose recently updates its headphone lineup with the FreeStyle earbuds, SoundTrue on-ear headphones and SoundTrue around-ear headphones. We got a chance to review the SoundTrue onear headphones. Bose announced their new series of colorful Bose SoundTrue headphones this year, which replace the fantastic older and more conservative-looking Bose OE2i (On-Ear) and AE2i headphones. With these new range of hedadphones Bose is certainly reinventing itself with more fashionable and budgetfriendly models. These Bose SoundTrue onear headphones come in black, white, mint, mint/black or mint/purple colors. And these headphones certainly look more vibrant than their predecessors for targeting the youth. The SoundTrue on-ear headphones we were using were a pale mint which look quite attractive but not flashy. The design itself is very simple and neat, and the headphones can be easily adjusted. The cups are mounted on collapsible hinges and can be folded flat so that you can carry the headset in a small pouch (which comes in the box). The earcups can turn 180 degrees to let them fold flat enough to fit in the palm of your hands. This makes the SoundTrue On-Ears great for people who are on the move and like to stash their headphones in their backpack. The SoundTrue’s inline microphone-toting cable is removable and attaches only to the left earcup. You can also remove and replace the memory foam earpads, each of which is tailored to the particular headphone it is sold with. The plastics used in the rest of the construction of the SoundTrues are great — typical hardwearing, solid but light weight. The audio that
Pros you’ll get from the Bose SoundTrue on-ear headphones is not exceptional but decent enough. We expected much better than this from Bose. Though it handles well all kinds of genres and sound, sometimes it lacks that measured and balanced sound. The headphones cable also has an integrated microphone for taking calls. Voice quality seemed fine with no distortion.

Cubix from Portronics An ultraportable AUX speaker, a perfect match for your travel bag
C
ubix is a new range of ultra portable speakers from Portronics. These Aux speakers are very lightweight and one can easily carry them around in his backpack or even in his pocket. They come in three silicon casing colors of blue, orange and yellow. Lookwise we can say that it fits in any corner of your room or office desk and looks very attractive. It has a very simple boxy design and only one controller on the top to help you to power on and raise the volume of the speaker. Cubix has great adaptability and can easily be played with your smartphones; tablets; Mp3 players; notebooks; desktops; hand-held gaming consoles or any other audio-enabled devices. The most unique feature of Cubix is that it needs no separate power source to run. Just connect the speaker to an Aux port of the device you wish to play music from and you are ready to enjoy. The AUX cable, hidden under its back cover, making the cables storage safe and secure, all you have to do is just remove the back lid to find the in-built cable or to store it back. Cubix contains high quality dual coil 2W drivers that help amplify the sound. The sound output of Cubix is decent enough. Don’t expect a room filling sound from this device but it will help you to liberate the music from your smartphone or tablet or laptop. It not only amplifies the sound but also gives you distortionfree audible output. It contains a special 18650 Li ion cell that is additionally protected through the PCB at both ends. The play time of the speaker in a single charge is more than 4 hours at full volume.

F&D: F1200U Powerful sound at an affordable price
F
&D has ventured into 4.1 speaker category with ‘F1200U’. The sub-woofer comes with a 4 inch full-range driver and the satellite speakers are powered by 4-inch full range drivers output. With this range of speaker system F&D is targeting the consumers who need quality sound for music, movies and games in-house. The F1200U home theatre speakers offering 3600W PMPO has a built-in digital FM player providing storage up to 100 stations which works on PLL technology. The home theatre speakers can be easily connected to various media devices such as USB/SD card, PC, TV, MP3, CD and DVD player.
Usability & Performance: First the set up part: as we all know these wired 4.1 and 5.1 speakers are always a big problem to set up. And this F&D 4.1 F1200U also has these long wires to deal with. But not so complex to set up as all the wires are color coded so you can easily identify the slots. It features a round shape satellite design and a heavy duty metal grill. The subwoofer of F1200U flaunts a wooden cabinet which promises to deliver a strong and low distortion bass. Once you are through with the setup by placing the satellite speakers according to their place, you are ready to play your media through various sources as one can easily connect these speakers to PC, TV, MP3, CD and DVD players. The output is very impressive as always, and F&D never disappoints you with its performance. Though we played through various sources the speakers performed really well without any major issue. The sound output is very decent and distortion-free in most of the genres. While playing games we noticed few distortions in max volume level with few action games. Other than that not many negatives in these speakers. This is again a very good pocket-friendly home theater option for people who are looking to enhance their home entertainment.

Wickedleak Wammy Passion X : Spec heavy water proof device
F
ollowing the Wammy Passion Z and Z+, the new Wammy Passion X has quite is loaded with few new features. But overall design-wise the Wammy Passion X looks exactly like its predecessor, the Wammy Passion Z or Z+. It's based on an octa-core processor and has a full-HD screen, but the headline feature is its water-repellent "super-hydrophobic" coating, which the company claims makes the phone largely impervious to all kinds of liquids. Features: If we look into its features then we can say it has some decent specs in this category. Apart from the water resistance feature, this smartphone comes with a 5-inch IPS touch screen with DragonTrail scratch-resistant glass (1920×1080 px), powered with a 1.7GHz octacore Mediatek MT6592 processor and 2GB RAM. It has a 16GB internal memory and supports microSD up to 64GB. The camera features a 13MP rear camera that is capable of capturing 1080p FullHD video recording and the 5MP front camera is able to record 720p HD video. The Passion X has Dual-SIM (GSM + GSM) capability and supports connectivity to 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4 GPS with A-GP. It has a 2500mAH battery and runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
Performance: The Wammy Passion X is very light and we feel is cheap. The build quality is not that great as the plastic material is of a low quality and back panel, for instance, does not seal tightly and you can see gaps. It uses capacitive touch buttons, making full use of its bezel, which is always good but in this case, there is no backlight for those buttons. So if you are using the phone after switching off the lights, you can't see the buttons and will often press the wrong one. The 5-inch full HD display is crisp with rich colors and offers good viewing angles with scratchresistant Dragontrail glass. The device runs pretty smooth in day to day tasks. We haven’t noticed any lag in games or in multitasking, though the device is prone to smudges. The key highlight of this device is its AquaProtect feature, which is a waterproof nano-coating that helps to protect the samrtphone from rain, coffee spills but it is not that ultimate rugged phone. The 16GB of built-in memory is a good move by Wickedleak. Plus, you can always expand it via microSD. Camera is not that great in this Wammy Passion X; it is not for
those people who are looking for quality images in any given scenario. The Passion X is fine when you are clicking photos outdoors in the day, but in low lighting condition, the noise levels go up disproportionately. Taking photographs at night, even with the LED flash on, is not a good experience. Battery life of this device goes up to 12-13 hrs of day to day task and 8-9 hours in heavy usage.

he first Union Budget 2014 by the Modi Government announced by Finance Minister ArunJaitley covers a lot of ground, and at first glance, there are some very interesting announcements that apply to telecom and IT sector. As part of the announcements, online and mobile ADs will also come under the service tax ambit, which could impact a lot of online businesses; and 10 percent basic customs duties on importation of telecom products could also raise prices. Some promises, like village level broadband connectivity, have been doing the rounds for years now,the government has also announced incubators and startup funds, and promised a special focus on technology startups. 20 mobility July 2014
More satellites, more communication
FDI in e-commerce
The Mars Orbiter is expected to reach its destination on September 24, and the finance minister also said that more GSLV satellite launches will take place. This will only increase the communication enablement and can also create more opportunities to reduce on the communication costs.
TheFinance Minister also announced that the manufacturing units will be allowed to sell its products through retail including e-commerce platforms without any additional approval. This could simplify brands getting a presence on online sites like Flipkart, eBay, Amazon, Snapdeal, etc. The minister has also announced increasing the FDI level for the e-commerce sector.
Integrated Online billing platform As part of the Budget, it is also announcedthat there will be a unified bill payment system a single website from where all bills can be accessed and paid. What this might do is pull the rug out from under payment gateways, as you could pay for products online directly through the RBI, instead of an intermediary.
Gadgets becoming cheaper Mobile phones are set to get cheaper now. The government has announced that LCD and LED monitors under 19-inches will become cheaper. There is an announcement of4 percent exemption on smart card components as well. Also announced is no import duty on the www.mobilityindia.com

Defined focus on domestic manufacturing & infrastructure, investment allocations to build Smart Cities & to increase broadband penetration of Indian villages, liberalization of FDI in ecommerce sector, promised actions to finalize GST this year, clarity on transfer pricing along with a collaborative framework to minimize future disputes, etc are all steps in the right direction and indicative of a positive start to a long-term process. To conclude, this Budget is quite optimistic with clear roadmap ahead and it will be quite interesting to track how it plays out eventually”

Veerasundar Veluswamy, EVP & Chief Financial Officer, CSS Corp. Negatives: • No major incentives for IT/ITES industry; • Contrary to industry expectations, Minimum Alternate Tax (18.5% including surcharge &cess) still continues to apply for SEZs . Also there was no indication about the time lines for removal or reduction of MAT rates • There is no change in the Corporate Tax rates (domestic companies almost 34% & foreign companies close to 43%). Industry expectations is that the Government would take steps to align India's direct tax rates in line with those in ASEAN to make Indian Industries internationally competitive. • Retrospective amendment still continues but however cases affected by such amendments will be handled by a committee; • Non Deductibility of mandated 2% CSR expenditure for Income tax purposes
Positives: • Introduction of a “Roll Back” provision in the Advanced Pricing Agreement (APA) scheme so that an APA entered into for future transactions is also applicable to international transactions undertaken in previous four years in specified circumstances. This helps reduce long standing litigation affecting the IT/ITES industry severely; • Introduction of advance ruling for payments made to residents – This measure provides much needed clarity on the taxability of the transaction and avoiding litigation; • To allow use of multiple year data for comparability analysis under transfer pricing regulations. This helps provide much needed respite/clarification from a long-standing dispute pending before Indian Courts; • Continuation of tax rate of 15% on foreign dividends received without any sunset clause. This helps continue the cash repatriation from foreign arms of India IT/ITES companies. mobility July 2014 21

Amazon India The Finance Minister’s statement of allowing manufacturing units to sell their products through e-commerce platforms without any additional approvals is a positive statement of intent for the e-commerce industry. Following this statement, we are hopeful of a more positive and liberalized policy on e-commerce in the near future aimed to help grow the manufacturing industry.
Ajjay R Agarwal, CMD, Maxx Mobile: “The reduction in investment allowance limit from Rs 100 crore to Rs 25 crore will help in encouraging ancillary units. But, the budget does not have any specific measures to incentivize largescale domestic manufacturing of mobile phones, like increasing the duty differential between imported and indigenously manufactured mobile phones. Some more concrete steps could have been taken.”
“We feel that the new government has presented a progressive budget, which will help in creating an investorfriendly environment and attract more foreign and domestic investment in the Telecom sector. Allowing FDI in telecom will attract more investment across functional technology areas like 4G and Wi-Fi enablement of cities, railway stations and trains, will create more opportunities for telecom solution providers like UST Global. Another key highlight of the budgetis the creation of rural broadband vision which will allow telecom companies to be a part of inclusive growth and improve the penetration of technologies to rural households, thereby improving the living standards of the citizens. Government earmarking Rs 7060 crore in this financial year for developing 100 smart cities in the country would also help create communication infrastructure.” 22 mobility July 2014
Praveen Rajpal, CEO, Rockstand “The Union Budget 2014 is an optimistic move by the government for the entire IT and telecom industry. We welcome the recent developments and applaud the government’s decision to support start-ups especially in the Technology and software space. The government’s decision to support start-ups through incubation centres will propel young entrepreneurs to initiate private ventures and reinvest in the nation’s economy. The government decision to allocate separate funds to support various e-governance projects and to uplift the education system across the country is a great move.”
N K Goel, Chairman Emeritus, TEMA:“TEMA & CMAI Welcome the budget of the present government to impose 10% duty on specified telecom equipment that are outside the purview of the Information Technology Agreement. This will go a long way in encouraging the domestic manufacturing of telecom equipment and creation of new jobs. We expect the generation of nearly 5 lac direct and indirect jobs. This budget lays further emphasis on expanding broadband which will guide the next phase of India’s growth. Another positive aspect of the budget is, the government for the first time talked about startups, entrepreneurs, domestic products and R&D with a budget provision of Rs 10000 crores.”
AdityaAgarwal, Director and Co-founder ICE (smart phone and tablet brand): The FM has removed SAD for tablet components, which means lesser taxrelated complications for companies. Earlier, we were supposed to claim a refund on SAD after the components have been used for manufacturing or assembling. The refund process was not only complicated but time consuming too. Removal of such a tax component is a step in tax simplification direction.

At a time when there is a large set of consumers who look for better mobility driven solutions, the answers come in the form of laptops and it is the batteries of laptops that power these mobility solutions. Easy availability of fake laptop batteries is a huge menace and we all should rise up to fight it with all the heart, mind and clear understanding.

ost of us who use a laptop often find it difficult to buy authentic laptop battery. We have seen many instances where a user faces problems after changing the laptop battery; either the laptop goes off or it gives bad battery backup or heating issue or sometimes far more hazardous explosions. And these days there are many shops which are selling fake batteries openly and it is a huge task for a user to identify which is genuine and which is fake. Second, they need to understand the type of battery their laptop needs: nickel cadmium, NIMH, Li-ion or lithium poly. Some types are simply outdated. laptop batteries do, however share some common characteristics that differentiate them from regular household batteries. Rechargeable batteries are more complex than standard batteries. This is because the electrochemical reaction that provides power must be reversible. Care has to be taken when recharging them to ensure they perform at their best. Some companies offer used "cheap laptop batteries" for sale, saying that they have refurbished each battery and restored most of its useful life. The fallacy of this is that, although possible to refurbish a second-hand laptop battery, the cost to do so would be more than the price of a new battery. So, "Buyer beware," and if you must buy discount laptop batteries, better you go for new batteries. www.mobilityindia.com

Laptop Battery Buying Advice Every laptop battery hits old age, depending on how heavily the user uses his laptop. On an average a genuine laptop battery lasts from 18-36 months. After that the battery slips into a gradual decline and loses its ability to take a full charge or sometimes it simply does not charge. In general, a typical battery can be recharged between 300 and 500 times before the chemicals inside start to wear out. After that the battery that once powered a system for three hours may now run for only an hour or less. That is the time when you need to replace your laptop battery
Types of battery The next main thing a consumer should look for is the type of battery. Batteries can be made using several chemicals. For laptops, there are four main types of batteries. They are Ni-Cad, Ni-MH, Li-Ion and Li-Poly. There is no major manufacturer who still makes Ni-Cad laptop batteries, as they are outdated and primitive type of batteries. NiMH is the newer and more advanced, but is not as good as its Li-Ion and Li-Poly counterparts. If we compare the last three types (Ni-MH, Li-Ion and Li-Poly), we find that Ni-MH batteries weigh more than the other two, but produce less current than the other two. Li-Ion and Li-Poly are the most advanced types of batteries in the market and you should try to get one of these two types if possible. Most laptops that come with one type of battery cannot use any other type of battery, meaning that if your laptop came with a Ni-Cad, it must be replaced by another Ni-Cad. The same goes for the other types. Please note that in some cases, this does not apply. Some laptops that come with a Ni-MH battery can be replaced with a stronger Li-Ion one.
Options available
warranty on this type of battery is very minimal. Refurbished batteries do not hold as much power when compared to new batteries. Also, they can go dead suddenly since you really do not know how old they are. Our recommendation is to stay away from refurbished ones.
Our Verdict It is always better to buy a genuine laptop battery from the listed authorized center of your laptop brand, as that comes with a part number, warranty and company service option but you might have to shell a few extra bucks. If you are looking for a third party option, then a one year warranty is a must. Don't buy any battery with a warranty less than one year. Batteries have been known to die early and a three month warranty could leave you high and dry.
What to do with your old battery Go for recycling as many vendors organize free laptop Battery Recycling Programs in India for consumers. To avoid adding to e-trash go for this solution, as this will also help you avoid refurbished ones or dupes.
There are two basic types of notebook batteries: the standard branded batteries and the aftermarket batteries that are available from thirdparty resellers -- often for a significantly lower price. All of us want to save money, but not if it puts our notebooks at risk. Buying an aftermarket battery often goes against the advice of laptop manufacturers, and in some cases can even void the warranty. So you have to be very sure whether it is worth to save a few bucks?
Other option which you must avoid Refurbished battery is another option that a few local shops can offer you. Usually the www.mobilityindia.com
