Airtel Appoints Adarsh Nair as Chief Product Officer Bharti Airtel said that it has appointed Adarsh Nair as Chief Product Officer. In his new role Adarsh will be the custodian of Airtel’s digital products and platforms, and play a pivotal role in the company’s digital transformation journey. Gopal Vittal Appointed as Board Member of GSMA Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO (India and South Asia), Bharti Airtel has been elected to the Board of GSMA for the 2019-2020 term. Gopal will join 25 other distinguished leaders from across the

RJio Continues to Lead with High ARPU & Profitability: India Ratings & Research India Ratings and Research (IndRa) has published the September 2018 edition of its credit news digest on India’s telecom sector. It highlights the trends in the telecom sector, with a focus on subscriber additions, subscriber market share, broadband subscribers, data usage, average revenue per user (ARPU) and profitability of the key incumbents. The key highlights of the report include Ind-Ra’s views that Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited has continued on its market share growth trajectory, with high ARPU levels and increased profitability. The growth has been supported by large data allowances at low prices, aggressively priced tariff plans and tie-ups with over the top (OTT) players. Steady Subscriber Growth: In August 2018, 9.8 million wireless subscribers were added in the telecom sector. RJio continued on its strong subscriber growth trajectory and added 12.2 million subscribers, led by the launch of 4G feature phones, while other telcos either reported flat subscriber growth or a decline. Aircel Cellular Limited has not reported subscriber numbers since April 2018. Most of its subscribers would have moved to other telcos due to the closure of its services.

Rosenberger Working Closely with Leading Telecom Partners for 5G Deployment Rosenberger, a German technology company announced that it is keen to work with all the leading telecom companies in India for the deployment of 5G technology. India has leapfrogged into the 4G arena and there is growing anticipation around 5G. In the current scenario, the biggest issue the operators are

facing is that of capacity crunch. At the recently concluded India Mobile Congress 2018, Rosenberger demonstrated capacity enhancement solutions in Base Station Antennas to address this issue. It is critical for India’s highly competitive marketplace, that such solutions are deployed that would result in customers’ satisfaction on a continuous basis. In line with this, Rosenberger showcased next-generation wireline and wireless solutions. With multiple bands and technologies, availability of tower space is a major concern with operators and they need

Xiaomi Sells Over 8.5 Mil Devices in One Month During Festive Sales Xiaomi announced that it has sold over 8.5 million Xiaomi devices in one month during festive sales period. This milestone was achieved between 9th October and 8th November, 2018. This roughly translates to Xiaomi selling over 3 devices per second during this month. Xiaomi also went on to achieve record breaking GMV of $1 billion during this period. Xiaomi devices include Xiaomi smartphones, Mi LED TVs, Mi Band 3, Mi Power Banks, Mi Earphones, Mi Routers and other Mi ecosystem and accessory products that were sold across mi.com, Mi Home and partner channels. Xiaomi also announced that it had sold over 6 million smartphones in this period. It is the highest number of smartphones Xiaomi has ever sold in the mentioned period. Last year, Xiaomi sold 4 million smartphones during the period across same platforms. Xiaomi sold over 400,000 Mi LED TVs and over 2.1 million Mi Ecosystem products and accessories, which also marks the highest number of Mi LED TVs Xiaomi has sold in a 30 day period.

NFAP’s spectrum identification to help the Delivery of ‘Mobile broadband’ The National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP) was announced at the recently concluded India Mobile Congress 2018 at Aerocity, New Delhi and is expected to provide a necessary roadmap for the evolution of the Indian Digital Communications industry. The NFAP as a document lists the use of all spectrum bands in the country by various users/services. Basis the identification of bands for various services in the country, the Government allocates spectrum to concerned stakeholders. Every country has a form of NFAP, which is meant to harmonise the use of spectrum across the globe. The NFAP launched at IMC 2018, the biggest mobile, internet and technology events in South Asia, identified certain dedicated spectrum for IMT (International Mobile Telecommunications). A remarkable number of top government officials, industry leaders, global experts, brand representatives and consumers attended the event.

As the year 2018 is coming to an end, let glance back and see how the market fared this year so that we can get a fair idea how it is going to perform in 2019. India has been an attractive target for the smartphone manufacturers with the country being the second largest smartphone market and among the fastest growing smartphone markets globally. Last year we saw a total shipment of 124 million smartphone units, and registering an annual growth of 14%. This being the story, it is always interesting to follow up with the Indian smartphone trends as each year the country witnesses fresh advancements. Before we dive into the smartphone trends of 2018, let’s look further back at a few highlights the smartphone market saw in 2017: • China-based vendors further strengthened their positions in the smartphone category with the col lective share of China-based vendors reaching 53% in 2017 from 34% a year ago. • The Indian telecom operator Reliance Jio shipped huge shipments of 4G-enabled feature phones taking the leadership position on its maiden quarter in this category. This resulted in a total of 164 million feature phone shipments in 2017 from 140 million a year ago. • In terms of features the 18:9 aspect ratio and 120 Hz smartphone screens became more common among a few high-end devices pleasing game lovers. • iPhone and One Plus with the release of iPhone X and One Plus 5T respectively, introduced to the masses the technology of face detection. Another year gone by, now in 2018 we have witnessed many groundbreaking trends and adoptions in the smartphone industry. The smartphone market in India is scaling up day-by-day and has seen a massive growth this year too. Some great trends of 2018 are discussed below.

In-screen fingerprint sensors The in-screen fingerprint sensors as a technologyadvancement have replaced the button that is required to sense the fingerprint before unlocking the device. Towards the end of 2017, Synaptics announced that it had cracked the problem of embedding fingerprint sensors into displays and was mass-producing the tech for Vivo. That makes Vivo the first smartphone manufacturer to have in-screen fingerprint scanners on its mobile devices. And right now though limited number of devices like the latest iPhone and OnePlus 6T have this feature, this will go to mainstream pretty soon. However, the technology is still nascent and smartphone manufacturers are testing the efficiency of this feature and the feasibility of this option on their devices. A constraint here would be the fact that in-

screen fingerprint sensors can only be embedded on OLED screens. However, Japan Display Inc (JDI) has recently announced a new breakthrough in the race. The company claims that it has achieved a transparent fingerprint scanner that is built right into the glass of a display instead of the traditional under-the-display fingerprint scanner technology that most other companies have been working on. The new scanner technology is an extension of JDI’s existing capacitive touch-technology called the Pixel Eyes, which integrates the technology into LCD panels. Year 2019 can expect to see this trend kicks off and becomes available to the masses.

Bezel less phones Bezel is the outside frame of a device, be it a


special story monitor, smartphone or any device. In simple terms, bezel for a phone is that padding that surrounds the screen space in devices.
