Airtel has announced price cuts on its third generation or 3G mobile data plans by about 70%, making it the cheapest 3G data provider in the country. In an apparent bid to woo more subscribers to its already swelling base, the mobile operator has stated that the new rates would apply to some of its plans. 3G services have also been launched in India last year by the several companies. Although these services allow substantially faster internet access on mobile handsets, adoption rates have been slower due to excessive tariff. The smartphone segment is forecast to see a much higher growth at 63.4% from 2011-15 and may achieve a shipment of 77.5 million by 2015 in the Indian market. For these reasons, the applications deployed there must guarantee privacy and integrity of the information they handle. The auction has to be organized before 31August, 2012. The TRAI has proposed a reserve price of Rs 3,622 crore for 1MHz of pan-India 2G spectrum in the 1800 megahertz band as against Rs 380 crore, which was set for auctions in 2008. ndia is expected to witness a huge business opportunities with the optical fibre network getting completed by the Government of India. While speaking at the inauguration of 3rd LTE India 2012 International Conference at New Delhi, Shri J.K. Roy, Member Technology, Ministry of Communications & IT said, “For an effective utilisation of the possibilities which can be offered by LTE (Long Term Evolution), back haul is one of the most important components. The optical fibre network which is being put in place by the Government of India will close this gap and there will be range of opportunities in the rural areas which can be availed by LTE technology providers.” In his introductory address, Mr. Adrian Scrase, Head of Mobile Competence Centre, 3GPP said that couple of years ago India was not much decided about LTE. “LTE was a dream for the Indian operators, but today releasing the growth & the level of satisfaction required, LTE has become a reality in India,” added Mr. Scrase. Mr. Shashi Dharan, Managing Director, Bharat Exhibitions the organizer of LTE INDIA 2012, says, “This business event on 4G services is a timely opportunity to discuss about evolving from 2G / 3G or 4G to LTE

and exploring the solutions for transforming ones network including the backhaul. The conference provided an update on the mobile broadband, current capabilities, the eco-system, drivers and directions for future evolution to the next generation/LTE and beyond.” On the emerging scenario of “humongous demand” in cell phone market, which is already taking place in the Indian telecommunication industry Mr. Abhay Savargaonkar , Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for mobile services, Bharti Airtel Limited said that to meet the demand for better services and applications the launch of LTE with its high speed and high spectral

efficiency was required. “The major drivers for LTE and its superiority were lowest cost per bit, use over a wide range of spectrums and flexibility regarding bandwidth,” Mr Savargaonkar added. The technology expert underlined that LTE is the only technology that will sustain the level of telecommunication demand in future. Mr. Cui Liangjun, Chief Executive Officer, ZTE India said, ZTE is fully determined to build a strong LTE ecosystem that offers a scintillating experience for mobile broadband users and participates in the country’s economic growth by supporting several government initiatives and schemes in sectors like health, education and governance. Giving details of system deployment scenario and the advantages of LTE, Mr. Takehiro Nakamura, Director-Radio Access System Group, NTT DOCOMO said that LTE could be deployed as an overlay on 3G network. “Legacy 3G facility was also there which meant 3G services could continue outside LTE even as this new technology was in use. The capability of this technology was 100 Mbps, with maximum downlink speed of 75 Mbps with 5 MHz bandwidth capable of handling 37.5 Mbps, he added.

IBM to help Axis Bank provide efficient customer care service

T

echnology giant IBM Monday said it has been engaged by Axis Bank in a large project to provide more efficient customer care services to its customers. As part of this alliance, IBM will consolidate and manage the contact centre operations from the bank's existing 58 regional asset centres to a single mortgage contact centre, IBM said in a statement. The contact centre will cater to inbound voice and email communications from bank customers, it added. This will help Axis Bank benefit from additional potential revenue generated as a

result of cross selling or up selling services or applications at the consolidated mortgage customer care centre. Axis Bank, a private sector bank, has more than 1,250 branches and 7,500 ATMs across the country. "We evaluated various companies and found that IBM understood our requirements best and was able to demonstrate true value and a partnering approach that gave us the confidence to entrust this critical operation to them," Axis Bank Senior Vice President (Consumer Lending) Jairam Sridharan said. 8 | May 2012

The start-ups will also be able to leverage the company's Metro user interface on Window 8 and Window Phone to operate in a cloud environment. Cloud computing uses a network of computers, data centres and storage systems as an integrated IT infrastructure for seamless operations, eliminating investments in stand-alone IT installation by enterprises and small and medium businesses. To be selected for the four-month incubation, prospective start-ups can apply online from Wednesday till July 1 and join the programme from September at the company's office in this tech hub. The company will also facilitate meetings between start-ups and venture capitalists and prospective investors in addition to mentoring.

ome June 2012 and we are set to see personal computers — notebook, netbooks and desktops — getting expensive by almost 10 per cent. At least this is what the sources close to the IT market say and confirm. Weakening rupee against dollar is leading major personal computer manufacturers in India to increase prices of their products. IT companies such as Acer India, Hewlett Packard (HP) India and Dell India are facing the reality of rupee depreciation, which they think would continue at this level of Rs 54-56 against the dollar for at least next few www.mobilityindia.com

months. The players felt information technology hardware market's margin is already driven by various factors such as excise duty and input costs. If forex movements also come into play at steep level since beginning this month, it would have to be passed on to the customers. However, 8-10 per cent might be more than what has been earlier for the industry level of around 5-7 per cent. Therefore, by and large, the increase in products cost will happen before end of this month, though demand from consumers are not yet down. MOBILITY

t a time when cloud computing is getting firmly entrenched in the global as well as Indian marketplace, the mobility segment is not left behind and we have already seen a lot of cloud based action on the device front. While Chinese telecoms and ICT major Huawei has clearly taken the lead, on global as well as Indian turf in terms of providing cloud technology on the handset level, China based Baidu (China’s version of Google) has just launched its cloud phone as well. In simple terms, this refers to any switchboard system, and because cloudbased phone technology exists on the Web, it can be accessed from anywhere — a desk phone, a cellphone or even a PC or tablet. Cloud-based phone service lets customers do almost anything on a phone inside and outside the office, enabling greater mobility and flexibility than conventional phone systems allow. Talking about Huawei’s recently announced cloud phone technology, Victor Shan, President India Device Business, Huawei said that today the

company is offering its Cloud+ feature on its smartphones. “We launched 2 smartphones last year Huawei Sonic and Huawei Ideos X3 with cloud features and we got really good response from the market. Huawei was the first player globally and in India to launch cloud Smart Phones. We are offering Cloud+ features on 4 Smart phones currently; they are Sonic, Ideos X3, Honor and the new Ideos X5. Huawei Cloud+ offers a range of next generation features like Cloud+ drive (16GB Free Net Space), Message+, Streams, Phone finder, SNS, Contacts Integration and any where any device access for content saved on drive. Speaking about the importance of cloud technology at the smartphone level, Sunil Lalvani, Director, Enterprise Sales, India, RIM said that Cloud Computing solution comprises of hardware and software components. “Recently RIM announced general availability of BlackBerry Business Cloud Services for Microsoft Office 365 – a new service for business and government organizations that extends Microsoft Exchange Online to BlackBerry smartphones and allows customers to manage their BlackBerry deployments in the cloud. The service is available at no additional charge to current medium-sized or enterprise subscribers of the Office 365 suite or standalone Exchange Online and works with BlackBerry smartphones on business or consumer data plans. Additionally, RIM

also offers Cloud based solutions such as HP ePrint Enterprise mobile printing solutions which enables employees to print from their BlackBerry smartphones to printers on their trusted network. This is a unique feature that provides mobile enterprise workers a secure remote printing experience. Another unique solution called the Handset Cloud,is exclusively tailored for application developers, offering access to a variety of BlackBerry smartphones operating on live networks around the world. Through this service, developers can easily install applications and test their functionality and compatibility with a variety of BlackBerry smartphones without having to actually obtain the handsets or settle for virtual simulators and emulators. The Handset Cloud supports a variety of BlackBerry smartphones and offers developers a variety of features and automated testing tools such as file transfer and over-the-air widgets to quickly download applications,” he explained. Benefits of Going with Cloud

Providing the much needed flexibility at the hands of end user, cloud-based phone systems leverage the power of cloud computing to give customers the functionality of multiple tiered storage systems. In plain English, cloud-based systems are hosted on off-site servers and are provided as a service. Because they don’t require customers to buy and maintain expensive telecommunications equipment, they’re much more affordable than conventional methods of communications. As Lalwani from RIM emphasizes, there are a number of benefits that can be accrued through mobile cloud computing. It enables companies to share applications without incurring a huge capital expenditure on hardware and software resources. Users of smartphones have the advantage of storing data and information with their cloud service providers and all services are available wherever the users are located, as long as there is network connectivity. “Since complex computing operations

Biggest adavantages of using cloud phone As Enterprises are looking for ways to cut down costs, eliminate multiple vendors and communication providers, reallocate resources and allow employees to easily connect regardless of location and device. Partnering with a service provider can offer these benefits through the adoption of cloud-based phones. Following are some of the benefits of using cloud phones: • Business continuity: continued access to all forms of communication through mobile devices as the system is clouddependent and does not rely on local internet to continue functioning • Reduced operating costs: lowered are run within the cloud environment, handset users do not need highly technical hardware and this reduces the cost of mobile computing to the client. Moreover, this also enables end users to create location based social networks. The introduction of cloud have also brought about a wave of customized solutions for the SME sector that reduces cost, offers greater scalability and flexibility while providing on-demand services. In fact, 40% of midsized organizations in India have already deployed mobility solutions with another 25% have planning to embrace at least one mobility device in the future. Enhanced communication across the organization, real-time collaboration among SME staff as well as enabling people to stay in touch with all the latest developments are some of the benefits of the adoption of mobile cloud for this segment. Cloud computing has also led to an increase in IT spends through the development of simpler product and solutions with mobile cloud,” he illustrates. so they can take advantage of scale economies in designing and implementing their networks. Cloud-based systems are vastly less expensive than physical storage and networking systems, while delivering the similar applications and capabilities on the go. Securing the Cloud According to Victor Shan from Huawei, securing the cloud is one of the biggest priorities and the company is providing all the tools to make sure that security on the cloud is taken care of. “We have taken the following measures to protect user security interests: a. Account verification: During Cloud+ account creation, at most care is taken in validating the end-user mobile number. The Cloud+ account is associated with not just enduser but as well with his/her device. All user actions with Cloud+ is associated both the account ID and as well with the mobile number. Generally, mobile numbers can be tracked to get the entire user information. This helps in zeroing the user, who could perform malicious, illegal activities with Cloud+ account. b. All communication between the end-user and the Cloud+ server are controlled through SSL protocol. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), is a cryptographic protocol that provide communication security over the Internet. SSL encrypt the segments of network connections at the Transport Layer, using asymmetric cryptography for key exchange, symmetric encryption for privacy, and message authentication codes for message integrity. c. User Data is backed in more than 2 servers distributed geographically. The backup system ensures atmost security to user data, MOBILITY

including the occurrence of natural calamities, such as earth quakes, in certain regions,” he explains. Talking about the security features of BlackBerry, Lalwani says that achieving true cloud security through the maintenance of an adequate level of application experience and maturity requires time and effort. For this reason, cloud providers must excel especially in application security and be able to demonstrate that they have the application security team knowledge and processes to protect client data in the cloud. “Security is the cornerstone of the BlackBerry solution and we are quite robust in this space - A recent report by industry analysts and Trend Micro revealed BlackBerry 7.0as the platform of choice for the most rigid mobile roles. According to the report, BlackBerry had the highest score, qualifying several parameters such as built-in security, application security, authentication, device wipe, device firewall and virtualization. In fact, RIM’s BlackBerry Business Cloud Services directly links Microsoft Exchange Online with BlackBerry smartphones to offer reliable, mobile access to synchronized email, calendar, contacts, tasks and memo pads. This facility offers complete data protection as is secured by the service provider and also enables users to remotely wipe out data and reset their password in the event of the device getting misplaced or lost. This service is also beneficial to SMBs as they can leverage BlackBerry’s BES offerings through BlackBerry Cloud Services while leaving the administration and maintenance of the backend infrastructure with the company. This will also provide administrators with the tools and flexibility to alleviate security risks. This also helps balance the personal and professional use of mobile devices. Additionally, wireless application of IT policies and settings can be carried out over one or more BlackBerry smartphones in real time,’’ he explains. www.mobilityindia.com

Some of the basic must-have features of cloud phones would ideally include the following: - Storage facilities to store pictures, music, videos, documents and so on - Synchronization and back-up to synchronize contacts from the smartphone to the server in real time as well as back-up information in the event of device getting lost or misplaced. This feature should also ideally be able torecover back the data on to the new smartphone and get back the same experience - Security for complete data protection in the event of losing or misplacing the smartphone - Remote Trackingto be able to remotely track the handset’s location as well as safeguard it from intruders by setting a password and locking the phone to keep information private May 2012 | 15

ireless interlinking of mobility focused devices – or WiFi is the wireless way to handle networking. It is also known as 802.11 networking and wireless networking. The big advantage of WiFi is its simplicity. You can connect computers, other devices anywhere in your home or office without the need for wires. The computers connect to the network using radio signals, and these computers or devices can be up to 300 feet or so apart. Initially, the Wi-Fi technology was intended to be used only for wireless devices and LANs, but is now often used for Internet access. It enables a person with a wireless-enabled computer, tablet or personal smartphone to connect to the Internet when in proximity of an access point called a hotspot. According to Nafis Kazim, Senior Vice President, Shyam Networks, today we already have 4G roll happening and in this kind of scenario, it becomes very important for the operator community to realize the full potential of their network investments. “WiFi can provide that value add for their end customers. The key is to integrate Wi-Fi hotspots within their overall mobile network infrastructure. This will make WiFi a seamless extension to the operators' mobile infrastructure, delivering seamless mobility for their end customers. This type of network will move towards letting their customers roam freely into their own business or private zones and still have the critical connectivity with them. So today, mobile operators have an opportunity to combine forces of Wi-Fi and LTE small cells to work towards their advantage and deliver much more value for their end customers,” he adds on. The necessary market drivers are in place to propel the growth, development and deployment of Wi-Fi into a mainstream technology across the country. • As broadband wireless access grows, according to market estimates, the WLAN network gear sector will exceed $275 Million by 2012-13. • The combined Wi-Fi market (described as consisting of WLAN networking gear, systems integration, professional services and not including embedded devices and laptops) is expected to exceed $744 million by 2012 end. With the Indian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology set to encourage Broadband MOBILITY

Mobility May2012.indd 19

penetration in the country, the priorities are clearly set. The ensuing battle for market share currently on in the mobile space will likely spill over into broadband as a nation starved for connectivity will begin network roll outs. Over the next few years this will create a new digital India with ubiquitous broadband connectivity, both wireless and wired, teeming with an always-connected young generation that is mobile and empowered. This is now set to change as the Government spearheads a strong broadband penetration into the country. The combined effect of a number of macro economic and social factors together with a large domestic demand seem poised to bring in a phenomenal growth in wireless broadband in India. Advantages of WiFi There are many benefits that a WiFi technology brings for the operator as well as for the end customer. As far as

Nafis

Kazim,

Networks the customer is concerned, WiFi is one of the most secure form of network so it brings a very high level of security for the customer. “In addition to this, on the operator side, with the help of Wi-Fi infrastructure, operators can take care of most of the effort needed to roll out LTE small cells, with the help of securing a network of permitted Wi-Fi access points and small cell sites with power, backhaul infrastructure. Hence, WiFi can deliver more value adds for their networks than any other technology,” Nafis Kazim explains. It is important to note that as connectivity focused technology Wi-Fi is not new to India and has been deployed at the enterprise level, campuses and SOHO sectors for several years. However, now more than ever before it is clear that all the enablers for creating a sustained WiFi network will emerge. The availability of a robust national data network backbone remained somewhat unutilized all these years due to the following reasons: high costs of data circuits and generally

www.mobilityindia.com

high bandwidth costs. This has changed significantly today. Advantage WiFi • Uses an unlicensed bit of the broadcast spectrum, this means less regulatory controls in many countries. • Frees network devices from cables, allows for a more dynamic network to be grown. • Many reliable and bug-free Wi-Fi products on the market. • Competition amongst vendors has lowered prices considerably since their inception. • While connected on a Wi-Fi network, it is possible to move about without breaking the network connection “Today we are witnessing growth of networks where new technologies like 4G or LTE is being embraced and hence, it is perfect timing for a technology like WiFi to make further inroads into the country. WiFi technology has huge potential for a country like India. As a connectivity technology, Wi-Fi allows the users to take advantage of the wireless networking delivering the flexibility of multiple usage location clubbed with multiple devices. As more and more mobile devices such as smartphones, Tablet PCs and laptops are being equipped with Wi-Fi chips, usage of wireless broadband via the same has seen significant growth inShyam the country,” Nafis Senior Vice President, Kazim from Shyam adds on. And as we move forward in the connectivity realm, very soon, all businesses and enterpsies will be unwired. Some smart companies have cut the wires and knocked down the walls, and some are just getting started. But it's not too late to go the WiFi way. Shyam’s WiFi Offering • Wifi Access Points, gateways, CPEs and backhaul radios are all in the product basket of Shyam Networks. • For Home segment, Shyam has a range of ADSL Wi Fi routers and 3G Wi Fi Routers. • For SMEs, Shyam Networks has WLAN routers. • For campus Wi Fi solutions, the company has indoor/outdoor APs and CPEs. • In addition to this, the company is also providing end to end Wi Fi solutions for residential buildings, malls and campuses. However, with the Increasing competition, the price of mobiles is expected to come down along with more features Being available at lesser prices. ABI Research credits iPhones and smartphones for explosive growth in aftermarket phone accessories as suppliers of aftermarket mobile phone accessories earned some Rs.1.24 lakh crore ($26.5 billion) in revenues in 2009. This figure could reach more than Rs.2.33 lakh crore ($50 billion) by 2015, estimates a new report from ABI Research. Senior analyst opine that accessories sector is seeing "explosive growth" as consumers rush to buy cases and other items that would help protect their expensive smartphones. High end consumers are now buying higher-quality and therefore more expensive accessories. Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS spurred the accessories market but even high-end feature phones such as Samsung models are also seeing more accessories available. Also becoming more popular are scratch protectors for screens; Bluetooth headsets, particularly those in the high end of the market; and wired stereo headsets. ABI Research notes that while memory cards are still selling well, the fact that handset makers are including highcapacity cards with the phones mean that less consumers are buying cards on their own. Most Popular Apps According to a recent study, games continue to be the most popular category of apps for both feature phone and smartphone users alike. Sixty-one percent of smartphone owners and 52% of feature phone owners report using a game app in the past 30 days. Weather apps are the next most popular category. But while all categories of applications are more popular on smartphones than on feature phones, the difference is more pronounced in categories such as Maps/ Navigation, where more computing power, larger screens and touch interfaces deliver a more satisfying experience. When it comes to the popularity of individual apps, Facebook reigns supreme on all smartphone operating systems. The most used apps are popular among users of all operating systems, although there area few minor differences: Twitter is among the top five only on the BlackBerry, perhaps because the device’s keyboard is optimized for typing. And while YouTube is popular on Android and Windows Mobile, it doesn’t make the top five on the iPhone or BlackBerry operating systems. Naturally, iPod/iTunes is popular only among iPhone users. The emergence of category champions with a significant lead over the competition. Facebook is the leading social networking app, the Weather Channel is the top weather app, Google Maps dominates Maps/Navigation and Pandora is the most popular Music app. Discovering Apps Searching application stores on their phones is the preferred way for discovering new apps for users of feature phones and smartphones alike (57% and 40%, respectively). The next most popular “preferred” form of app discovery is through the recommendation of a family member or friend. Free vs. Paid Apps users who go to the Apple App Store tend to download nearly twice as many apps as those who go to the Android Market or the BlackBerry App World Store. They also seem more willing to pay for their apps: Apple App Store MOBILITY

customers report that for every two free apps they download, they typically pay for one. In contrast, apps users who frequent the Android Market and Blackberry App World stores report downloading more than 3.5 free apps for every one they buy. Meanwhile, BlackBerry owners are the least likely to convert from a “lite,” free trial version of an app to a full, paid version. Apps users also have clear preferences when it comes to how they want to pay for mobile apps. Given that users’ primary concerns are convenience and security, it is no surprise that they would prefer to have charges appear on their cellphone provider or credit card bills. Smart Advertising Mobile advertising is increasingly finding its way into mobile apps, with teenagers being much more receptive than their elders. Fifty-eight percent of teens say they “always” or “sometimes” look at mobile ads. In general, men of all ages are more receptive to mobile ads than women. Only 37% of men say they are not at all likely to respond to an ad on a mobile device, compared to 44% of women. Across all operating systems, apps users would prefer to view mobile ads within an app. Android users are more likely to click on an advertisement within an application, while iPhone users are the least interested in having ads take them outside of their application. Approximately one-in-five apps users say they have used a search engine or looked elsewhere online for more information after viewing a mobile advertisement or told someone about the advertised product or service. Seventeen percent have forwarded a link or video to others and 10% have recommended an advertised product or service. Sixteen percent have used a coupon and 14% have entered a contest or sweepstakes. Beyond Cellphones As connected devices such as touchscreen tablets, eReaders and media players gain in popularity, mobile apps are likely to flourish there as well. It should be no surprise that the iPod Touch currently sees the most apps downloads. Games are the most popular app category on all connected devices, just as they are on smartphones and feature phones. Conclusion www.mobilityindia.com

When smartphone is on your mind, focused research has several key takeaways for apps publishers, mobile advertisers, device manufacturers, mobile ad networks and wireless operators trying to fuel (and profit from) the growth of mobile apps. A is for Android and Ads: • Android owners show a clear preference for free apps. This may be due in part to the browsing interface on the Android Market, which makes it easy to browse free titles exclusively. However, we also know that Android owners tend to be younger and less affluent than iPhone users. Either way, they are more likely to click on an ad within an app, and that spells a clear monetization strategy for anyone targeting the fast growing Android user base. B is for BlackBerry: • Despite a huge installed base, Blackberry app usage lags the iPhone. It remains to be seen whether RIM’s new devices and revamped store will persuade BlackBerry owners to embrace mobile apps. C is for Consumer Convenience, Carriers and Credit Cards: • Consumers crave convenience, security, and consolidated bills when it comes to paying for their mobile apps. Carriers and credit card companies should already have consumers’ trust and are eager to carve out a central role in a world often eager to pass them by. T is for Teens: • The young continue to be more receptive to mobile advertising than their elders. Will they continue to be more receptive as they age due to their comfort with technology, or will time temper their openness to mobile ads? Alternatively, will older generations become more receptive as they gain more experience with mobile? Future research should shed light on this issue. T is also for Third Parties: • Apps users value the recommendations of third parties, whether it is a family member, a friend, or a site or service offering ratings and reviews. Those seeking to market mobile apps would be well advised to emphasize two tactics: Word-of-mouth marketing that also includes social media and securing favorable ratings and reviews. It is very important to note that mobile focused applications are still a very young market and the leaders of today may become the laggards of tomorrow. There remains plenty of room for innovative newcomers, and new categories will emerge with applications we have yet to imagine. May 2012 | 23

Measuring 5.3" (l) x 2.8" (w) x 0.4" (9 mm) (d), the phone is too big for one handed use. Thanks to its polycarbonate body though, it is relatively lighter at 130 grammes. The One X is one of the slimmest handsets from HTC's lineup. Additionally, its polycarbonate unibody makes it look premium. Having said that, the accents around the lens look terrible. Overall, HTC has managed to build a slim and sturdy smartphone. This gadget's 4.7" Super IPS LCD2 panel has pixel dimensions of 1280x720, with the pixel density being as high as 312 ppi. The screen is bright, and impressively sharp. Additionally, it offers wide viewing angles and great contrast ratio. fter going different ways with Ericsson, Sony has brought out its first flagship product, the Xperia S into the market. This Android handset features a pixel-packed 4.3" screen, with the much-hyped BRAVIA engine. Additionally, the phone features a 12 MP snapper. Unlike Sony Ericsson phones, this handset from Sony has a clean design. The body is composed of scratch-resistant glass and matte plastic that makes it look decent. Additionally, the curved back provides a better grip over the device. This phone has a microSIM slot that can be accessed by removing the back cover. However, the battery is not user replaceable. To sum it up, the phone has a pleasant design and great build quality. The handset is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU, coupled with an Adreno 220 GPU. Other specs include a 12 MP primary and a 1.3 MP front camera, 1 GB of RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, a 1750 mAh battery, and a bunch of sensors. n line with other handset manufacturers, Maxx Mobiles is now trying its luck with projector phones as well. Apart from the onboard projector, the MTP9 - Focus also features a 5 MP camera touchscreen, and dualSIM functionality. This is no ordinary phone, and to prove that point you get not one, but two boxes on purchase. One contains the phone and usual accessories such as a pair of earphones, charger with detachable USB cable, and a 4 GB microSD card; while the other box contains a projector stand. The device measures 4.1" (l) x 2.2" (w) x 0.7" (d), and weighs 92 grammes. To accommodate the projector lamp, the device has been made pretty thick. It feels very bulky to hold. The phone's 2.8" display is reasonably bright, but it produces dull colours. What's worse is that its resistive touchscreen panel

requires you to use your fingernails to work. Additionally, the viewing angles aren't wide, but it gets the work done. The MTP9 Focus is powered by a 200 MHz CPU. It features a 5 MP fixed focus camera, micro-USB port, microSD card slot supporting upto 32 GB of memory, 1200 mAh battery. Projection is the USP of this device, and MAXX has been generous enough to ship it with a projector stand. The stand is easy to assemble and operate. To activate the projector mode, you need to press and hold the camera key for about 3-4 seconds. The device is capable of projecting up to around a 40" display, but at that size the images look grainy. The onboard 5 MP, fixed focus camera is good enough for daylight photography. However, like most fixed focus snappers, it produces a lot of noise in low-light shots. What's more, the recorded video clips are so grainy that it made me wonder if it's actually a 5 MP module.

Aesthetically, the iOS hasn't changed much in its fifth iteration. However, it's the most flexible and useful version of the platform yet. Other than Siri, the most notable addition is the Notification Centre, which is a blatant copy of Android's notification bar. There's also an option to replace the usual pop-up alerts with banner-like notifications, as seen on the WP7 platform. This is a welcome change, as pop-ups appearing in the centre of the screen can get quite annoying.

The device measures 4.4" (l) x 2" (w) x 0.5" (d), and weighs 85 grammes. The phone has the same boring design that we have been seeing for a couple of years from the Korean giant. The front is all glossy, while back panel has a brushed metal finish. The phone is powered by an 832 MHz CPU. Other specs include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 2 MP camera, 3.5 mm jack, microSD card slot, Assisted-GPS, and a 1200 mAh battery. Its 3.2" screen has pixel dimensions of 480x320. The gadget is based on Bada 2.0 OS with TouchWiz UI on top of it. The interface looks like a cheap intimation of the Android OS. The interface features up to 10 homescreens and a notification bar.

The music player shares its UI with every Samsung Android in the market. The sound quality of the device is pretty good. Additionally, the Koreans haven't forgotten to include the FM radio. On the flipside, equaliser settings are absent. The onboard 2 MP, fixed-focus camera produces strictly mediocre images. But then you can't expect better from a 2 MP snapper.

Still, RIM has retained the optical trackpad as an alternative to the touchscreen. As expected from any BB phone, the physical keyboard is good. The keys are perfectly sized, but there's no spacing between adjacent keys. This can be uncomfortable for many. The phone is powered by a 1 GHz CPU and has 768 MB of RAM. Other specs include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, a 5 MP camera, 3.5 mm jack, microSD card slot, and a 1230 mAh battery. The 2.4" LED-lit screen has pixel dimensions of 480x360. The device features BlackBerry's touch-friendly OS 7. The interface is pretty smooth, but I didn't like its icons and colour scheme. The OS features an app drawer that reveals apps and settings when slid upwards. However, it's a touch and type phone, BB has played safe by retaining the trackpad as an alternative to the touchscreen. All in all, BlackBerry has done a decent job with the new user interface. Off late, Blackberry has been making phones with good sound quality. Sadly, this handset is an exeption. On the other hand though, the video player is quite good, and it supports MP4, DivX, XviD, and WMV videos up to 720p.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 620 – Owner's Pride

S

amsung has brought out several variants of tablets under its GALAXY range, in multiple screen sizes. Of these, the 7" version is the cheapest of the lot. Boasting of HD video playback, the device makes an impressive initial impression. The device measures 7.6" (l) x 4.8" (w) x 0.4" (d), and weighs around 345 grammes. The build is steady and the slate is light to hold. It comes with 7" TFT LCD touchscreen with pixel dimensions of 1024x600. The touch device is powered by a 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU, Mali 400MP GPU, 1 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of internal memory. Other bells and whistles include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G support, 3.5 mm audio jack, USB 2.0 charging port, 3 MP rear and 2 MP front cameras, GPS, a 4000 mAh battery and a bunch of sensors. The gadget runs Android 3.2 (Honeycomb), with Samsung's TouchWiz UX UI on top of it. The touchscreen is responsive, but the tablet is laggy, which seems to be more of an Android optimization issue. By default, the screen adjusts brightness automatically, which is great when using the device outdoors. Even though the tab is Flash-compatible, interactive games literally crawl on it. Apple iPad 2012 — The Hottest One

A

lthough Apple's third generation tablet isn't called the iPad 3, it's just the new iPad, and that's what matters to the fans. It promises to deliver a power-packed performance and a "sharper than ever" screen. Let's see if this gagdet is a worthy sucessor to the highly successful iPad 2. The iPad's retail box contains the tablet, charger, USB cable, and a couple of Apple stickers. I wish at least a pair of earphones should have been bundled with the retail package. The tablet itself looks very similar to its predecessor. Despite the lack of innovation though, it is still the bestlooking tablet in the market. Measuring 9.5" (l) x 7.3" (w) x 0.4" (9.4 mm) (d), the new iPad is slightly thicker than its older variant. Additionally, tipping the scales at 652 grammes, it's also on a heavier side. Overall, with a shining new scratch-resistant glass and metallic finish, it's excellent for showing off. The gadget's 9.7" screen has pixel dimensions of 2048x1536, which delivers pixel density of 264 ppi. This is the arguably the most pixelpacked screen ever slapped on a tablet. As expected, the screen is bright and sharp. Colour reproduction is excellent; the only minor annoyance here is its reflectivity. The gadget runs the iOS 5.1, which hasn't changed drastically from the previous iteration. MOBILITY

However, there are a few iPhone-like features, such as the pull-down notification bar, have made it to the new iPad. Additionally, there's an option to replace the usual pop-up alerts with banner-like notifications, as seen on the Windows Phone platform. The default browser has HTML5 support, but gives a cold shoulder to Flash. The browser is quick at rendering pages and is capable of showing websites in desktop mode. Additionally, thanks to the pixel-packed display, the text looks crisp. Although you can't enjoy 4G speeds in India yet, the device works perfectly with 3G networks. Intex i-Tab – Value for Performance

I

ntex's i-Tab is one such tablet that features Android 2.3, full HD video playback, and a 3G data card. The gadget measures 8" (l) x 6.3" (w) x 0.5" (13 mm) (d), and weighs around 475 grammes. The tablet looks cheap from the every possible angle that you see it from. Intex has come up with an uninspiring design, and has sprinkled tackiness on every possible part of the device. The only saving grace here, is the sturdy build. Overall, this is not a device that you can show off, which in effect, defeats the purpose of buying a tablet. The i-Tab's 8" touchscreen has pixel dimensions of 800x600. The screen is bright and colour reproduction is decent. Having said that, its awkward screen ratio of 4:3 and reflective screen are slightly annoying. The tablet is powered by a 1 GHz CPU and has 512 MB of RAM. Other specs include Wi-Fi, 8 GB internal memory, a microSD card slot, front VGA camera, 3.5 mm jack, mini-USB port, full sized USB host, HDMI, and a 5000 mAh

battery. Thanks to the bundled Ethernet adapter, you can access the wired internet. Additionally, the bundled 3G data card allows you stay connected, while on the move. However, similar to

most entry-level tablets, this one lacks the main camera and Bluetooth. The device's sound quality through bundled earphones is decent. The speaker is loud enough, and there are plenty of equalizer settings to play around with.

iberry BT07i – The Mass Tablet

H

ong Kong-based iberry has introduced a 7" tablet called the BT07i. What makes this tablet stand out from the rest, is its 1 GHz CPU that is capable of 1080p video playback.

The manufacturer has been generous enough to stuff the retail package with a lot of goodies. It contains the tablet, mini-USB cable, charger, earphones, and a leather cover. Despite being affordable, the device has decent looks. The bezel is too big to my liking, but the back panel has a nice matte finish to it. It not only adds to device's appearance, but also gives it a better grip. The tablet does not creak at any point. Overall, the tablet's build quality is very good, considering its price tag. The 7" touchscreen has pixel dimensions of 800x480. The screen is reasonably bright, but the colours look dull. Like every low cost device, its screen is highly reflective. This becomes more annoying when used outdoors. The tablet is powered by a 1 GHz CPU and has 512 MB of RAM. Other specs include Wi-Fi, 4 GB internal memory, a microSD card slot, front VGA camera, 3.5 mm jack, USB OTG-enabled mini-USB port, and a 3600 mAh battery. The BT07i's sound quality is good, and the bundled earphones are quite loud. Having said that, the earphones are so ugly, that you may not want to wear them in public. Since iberry hasn't bothered customising the software, equaliser settings are missing. Video playback is one area where the tablet outshines its competitors. This tablet not only plays the 720p videos, but can also handle the 1080p ones.
