device prices and better network coverage aided by operator investment will help deliver over 330 million new unique subscribers by 2020, taking the penetration rate to 68%. India is now the world’s second largest smartphone market, overtaking the US in the first half of 2016, with an installed base of 275 million as of June 2016. India is also seeing an ongoing technology shift to mobile broadband services. With a gradual reduction in data tariffs and growing availability of affordable smartphones for consumers, the mobile broadband connection base is forecast to reach more than 670 million by 2020. By this date, almost half of the total connections will run over mobile broadband networks. There

As more users migrate to high-speed broadband, mobile data traffic is expected to grow 12-fold between 2015 and 2020, at a CAGR of 63%. Mobile operators in India have so far reported limited revenue contribution from data services, generating 17% of service revenues at the end of 2015. This is forecast to increase to 23% by 2020, still well below advanced countries in Asia Pacific, which are in the 30–35% range. Operators have made capex investments worth INR154,100

crore ($23 billion) over the last five years, a figure forecast to increase sharply to total around INR227,800 crore ($34 billion) for the period to 2020. Operating cashflow margins in India stood at just over 12% in 2015, well below both the global and the regional averages. Competitive pressures and network investments mean cashflow margins in India will remain subdued, highlighting the need for consolidation if operators are to justify the high levels of investment required to support ongoing mobile broadband network expansion. Mobile industry contributing to the digital economy In 2015, the mobile industry was responsible for 6.5% of India’s GDP, a contribution that amounts to more than INR9 lakh crore ($140 billion) of economic value added. Mobile operators and the ecosystem provided direct employment to approximately 2.2 million people in India across both the organized and unorganized sectors, while approximately 1.8 million jobs were indirectly supported. The mobile ecosystem also makes a highly significant contribution to the funding of the Indian public sector, with approximately INR1.4 lakh crore ($21 billion) in 2015. The Indian government’s Digital India initiative was launched in 2015 and aims to use the potential of digital technologies to address some of the significant socioeconomic challenges in the country. Mobile networks and the broader mobile ecosystem are helping to address the goals of Digital India. A new regulatory regime for mobile money should help accelerate moves to improve financial inclusion in the country: four of the eight licensees for the new payment banks are operator led (with a combined footprint of more than 620 million mobile connections). Mobile is already the dominant platform for Internet access and will play a pivotal role in delivering the Digital India vision of broadband as a utility for every citizen. As of mid-2016, around 430 million had access to mobile internet services, a figure that will increase to almost 670 million by 2020. This is equivalent to around half the population but will still leave India trailing the regional average of 63% penetration. Despite progress to date, mobile operators and the mobile ecosystem have the capacity to make a much greater contribution to delivering the Digital India initiative and continue to seek a greater role in the overall program. Policy and regulatory reform can help boost mobile broadband Review and reform in three key areas would accelerate mobile broadband access and adoption across the country: • India will benefit by adapting regulation to the realities of the new digital ecosystem. Obligations tied to a specific technology, rather than the service provided, distort the market, preventing operators from competing equally with other digital market players. • Mobile operators in India carry significant debt as a result of the high prices for spectrum, administrative fees and levies. Reductions of these costs would free resources and foster an atmosphere conducive to investment, which is needed to keep pace with network expansion and improvements to achieve the goals of Digital India. • To cater to rising mobile broadband adoption, India should commit to the spectrum bands supported at WRC15. More importantly, India needs to allocate the 470–698 MHz band for IMT in order to boost mobile broadband and the broader digital economy. (Courtesy GSMA Report)

Mobility NOVEMber 2016

In the coming three years, most mobile users in India will connect to 3G and 4G networks, resulting in more data consumption. The national Digital India and Smart Cities programs are showing great progress, which will also speed up data consumption Mr. Alasdair Grant Head of Asia, GSMA

Q. How do you find the response to the present conference? A. The response has been very good - we received over 1,000 registrations for the inaugural Mobile 360 – India conference this year, which was much more than we expected. We are extremely happy with the results.

Q. Please brief us on the present metrics of the mobile Industry in India? A. Today, there are 616 million unique mobile subscribers in the Indian market, which equates to 47% of the population. By 2020, an additional 330 million subscribers are expected to join, bringing the total to approximately 1 billion. The penetration rate in India will rise to 68%, and over 50% of Indian citizens are expected to have smart phones.

Q. What are the projections for data flow and smartphones? A. There is a huge amount of data being used in India. Although traditional voice calls still dominate currently, data flow is expected to increase twelvefold by 2020. India now has 275 million smartphones, and has overtaken the USA as the second largest

special story

smartphone market in the world. In fact, two-thirds of all smartphones in the country are now assembled in India. We are experiencing a remarkable paradigm shift.

Q. What are the statistics on economic front? A. Mobile operators and the ecosystem provided direct employment to approximately 2.2 million people in India across both the organised and unorganised sectors, while approximately 1.8 million jobs were indirectly supported. This means that the mobile industry employs 4 million people in total, and by 2020, this total figure is expected to reach 5 million.

Q. There is a big gender and social gap in India, where men use widely the services available on mobiles, and women’s participation is far less. What does that metrics say about this? A. In India, over 90% of people do not have their own bank accounts, and the bulk of these “unbanked” citizens live in villages. The gender gap is substantial - men are the primary users of

mobile apps for banking, healthcare, and so on. GSMA research shows that women in India are 36 per cent less likely to own a mobile than men, which equals an estimated 114 million fewer women who are benefiting from mobile services. The GSMA launched the Connected Women Commitment Initiative in February 2016, aimed at reducing the mobile gender gap. I’m happy to share that Airtel, Aircel and Vodafone are the newest signatories to the Connected Women Commitment Initiative. All three operators have made a commitment to increase the number of women accessing mobile internet services, with additional commitment from Vodafone to grow its base of female mobile money customers, all of which are very encouraging.

Q. What future changes do you foresee? A. In the coming three years, most mobile users in India will connect to 3G and 4G networks, resulting in more data consumption. How the carriers rank across categories (Performance, Quality, Variability, Coverage)

According to State of Mobile Performance Report by Twin Prime, if we talk about the carriers rank across all the 4 categories based on performance, quality, variability and coverage we found Airtel as the fastest carrier and Jio is the most consistent. We traced the specifications: – Performance in terms of speed when downloading static files such as images – Performance variability between the fastest and the average users – Quality of the network in terms of network response time – LTE Coverage as measured by the likelihood that an LTE user will access an LTE network when using an app The results are revealing. First, we notice speeds in the range of 1-2 mbps across the board. Airtel tops our rankings in performance across 2G, 3G, HSPA, and LTE. It is also has the highest quality network. Jio, which launched in 2016, is slightly slower than Airtel, but tops our charts in consistency, which suggests that it provides a more uniform experience for its users. Jio also ranks first in our coverage metric, which is somewhat expected given that it is a 4G/LTE only network. It is important to highlight that these are live performance numbers as experienced by mobile users in India. Static files, such as images, provide a good proxy of network performance, since the backend serving the images has to perform a simple memory lookup. We excluded dynamic files, such as JSON, from our results to avoid cases where slow performance would be an outcome of slow backends.

We measured performance for all networks (2G, 3G, HSPA, and LTE) and found that Airtel is the fastest carrier across the board. In LTE, Airtel is 1st (15% faster than Tata Docomo) followed by Aircel and Reliance in 3rd and 4th, and BSNL and JIO in 5th and 6th. To put this performance ranking into perspective, it would take on average 222ms to download a 40KB image on LTE over Airtel. When looking at HSPA, Airtel’s dominance is undeniable, measuring 24% faster than Vodafone and 40% faster than 3rd ranked Tata Docomo. Given that HSPA is the most dominant network technology in the Indian market, Airtel and Vodafone emerge as the best carriers (for now) in India. Airtel and Tata Docomo are definitive performance leaders in 3G, averaging about 300ms-400ms faster when downloading a 40KB image. Aircel, Vodafone and BSNL are ranked as 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively. Overall, we are seeing a 20% bump in speed from 3G to HSPA and 100% increase from HSPA to LTE. Finally, when comparing the performance of HSPA-Plus to HSPA, we see that numbers are identical. So HSPA-Plus deployments have not led to improvements in speeds experienced by users.

Jio is the Most Consistent in Performance **We only focused on LTE coverage as this is the fastest network

The gap is bigger for Airtel, Tata Docomo and Vodafone at 70%. Idea is the most variable carrier, with a variability index of 2.2.

Looking at network quality as measured by network response times, Airtel is the best in LTE and HSPA. Reliance is second in LTE with 17ms, BSNL is third with 21ms slower response times. All measurements are for 75% of users. In general, it takes devices about 100ms to access a network. In HSPA, Airtel tops our charts with 107ms, Tata Docomo is second with 113ms, and Reliance is third with 125ms. Network response times are similar for 3G networks. The top 2 carriers are in the 115ms range. However, slower networks are in the 210-240ms range, which is fairly slow. For example, Vodafone has a fairly high response time of 213ms to reach our accelerators. Aircel

METHODOLOGY For the State of Mobile Performance H1 report, we analyzed over 6 billion data points collected from 600 apps with traf c across the US, India and Europe. We tracked more than 1,500 different network operators to measure their performance over 2G, 3G, HSPA, HSPA-PLus, LTE and Wi. DATA COLLECTION Using the Twin Prime SDK and our globally hosted Twin Prime accelerators, we are able to report on actual user experience as measured on the device side while users perform dayto-day tasks. Our data points are not network probes that measure overall network capability, which usually leads to an overestimation of the speed that the user experiences. ANALYSIS Due to the characteristics of mobile performance datasets (such as extremes and skewed distributions), we use percentiles for our analysis. We have also excluded accelerated traffic, as this would bias the results.

LTE: BETTER PERFORMANCE BUT ALSO GREATER VARIABILITY

When looking at the the performance variability by network, we observe that Wifi is the most variable of all. This can potentially be attributed to the high variability in Wifi speeds offered by ISPs. On the cellular network side, variability has decreased compared to 2015. 3G is the least variable of the networks. LTE, while the best performing, is also the most variable. Fast users get 170% better performance than median users.

Be it a product for aftermarket or

OEM or ODM, AIPL is always on the front-foot move provide you with the right impetus to become a dominant player in the OEM mobile battery segment? VK: We were the first budget-ready company and we have been moving in the right direction even after some changes in the Government policies. We are today India’s largest mobile battery and portable charger manufacturer for the OEM/ODM business. We are the oldest too and thus have first mover advantage on our side. Be it a product for aftermarket or OEM/ODM, we are talking to most of manufacturers today. Few tie ups already have materialized. Q. Keeping the various consumer verticals in mind, are you bringing any new products in the current and forthcoming quarters? VK: A lot of new models will be added in the current product portfolio in the coming months. We are also geared up for new verticals related to. Currently we have enough on our platter but we do understand the need of bringing in new things to keep the freshness alive. We may add products if they are consumercentric.

Mr. Vikram Kalia

Director Sales & Marketing, Adit Infratel Pvt. Ltd.

Q. What kind of channel engagement program are you planning? VK: Our current focus is to have a footprint all across India. We have a good coverage pan-India but still there are some territories that we need to cover. We have not announced any specific channel engagement program other than monthly and quarterly discount schemes, but soon we will announce our new schemes.

Q. Currently which product segments of AIPL are doing well in the market and which are you focusing for the current financial year? VK: Other than mobile batteries and portable chargers, we are getting very good response for Mobile Chargers, Car Chargers and Earphones. Initially it was tough to make the channel partners understand higher price because of superior quality but now the momentum has picked up well. We have renewed our focus on multimedia speakers and have launched a few models currently which are yet to pick up.

Q. Can we look forward to any surprises in the near future for the AIPL? VK: Sure, but they won’t be surprises if we discuss them now.

Q. What is your overall market outlook and where do you currently focus? VK: Our roots have been deep into manufacturing and with the current Make in India initiative, we have invested into another unit to manufacture mobile batteries and chargers for mobile manufacturers. So our primary focus will be OEM sales and we will be strengthening our relationship with the OEMs. Market outlook looks good and market has accepted our brand very well.

Q. Last but not the least, what are your future plans? VK: We make multi-directional approach. We launched our online portal and much needs to be done on that. Our new manufacturing unit will start turning out units which will give us a 3-digit growth. Another facility is around the corner and hopefully the same will be up and running by 2nd quarter next year. On the Channel sales front, we will be expanding our brand penetration to more than 100 cities by the end of this year. We own two brands for the channel – Advent and EBAK. EBAK has a history behind it and now we are ready to go all out for this brand and expand to B, C and D tier cities. Advent is relatively a new brand but is catching up fast.

Q. Through the company’s Make in India strategy, AIPL has set up first Lithium polymer battery facility in Haryana. Does this

Mobility NOVEMber 2016

Q. How far has been AIPL able to position products uniquely in the market? VK: We have been trying our bit. The positioning in the battery trade is definitely much better because of our consistent quality. Consumers are assured.

1. Insufficient Storage When you keep getting the insufficient storage error, the first thing to do is, uninstall all the unwanted apps that have been occupying tons of space on your phone. This will free up some space and keep your device running smoothly. The next thing to do is, move some of the apps, pictures and large files from your device to the SD card and you’ll be amazed to see the amount of space you’re left with. Lastly, make it a habit to clear the cache (phone’s temporary storage area). Remember, every app on your phone fills space with cached files and clearing these can create enough space. To clear the cache * Go to your settings * Select Apps * Choose an app which has cache (Facebook, Twitter, Game, Chrome) * Hit clear cache 2. When Your Phone Freezes

mess up your phone’s speed, so change it if you must. Also, check for updates on your phone and if that doesn’t work, do a factory reset. Factory resetting clears everything on the phone and makes it look like what it was when you first opened the box. 4. If Your Battery Drains Quickly The simplest way to prolong your phone’s battery is to change your brightness settings. Avoid the auto brightness setting and keep it as dim as possible because it consumes too much battery. Remove unnecessary widgets from the home screen, like the social networking and news apps that stay on your home screen for real-time updates. If you can, turn off your notifications and especially, GPS when not in use. By the way, did you know that it’s good to let your battery die once in a while? Yes, fully discharging and then recharging your phone’s battery is actually good for the battery. Jokes apart, it helps maintain its charge capacity.

Phones usually slow down when the internal storage is almost full. So again, delete unwanted apps, move your photos and videos to the drop box or SD card and avoid using live wallpapers.Do not forget to close all the open apps that cause your phone to freeze or you could try restarting your phone. We also highly recommend the Clean Master app, which is available free of cost on the Google Play Store. It does clean up your device by removing all the junk and improves your phone’s performance.

Your phone was super fast when you first bought it, right? But it isn’t as zippy as it used to be. Well, we’ve all been there! When your phone starts to slow down and apps take longer to open and run, try deleting some apps, clearing the cached data and check your SD card if you have one. An SD card can actually

This isa verycommon issue with almost all handsets. The next time you face problems connecting to bluetooth, Wi-Fi or the cellular network, just switch on the airplane mode for a few seconds and turn it off. If that doesn’t work, try switching off your cellular network and switching it on again.

Most of us depend on some apps to get through our day-to-day lives and we know how frustrating it can be when those apps keep crashing 10 times a day. Well, there’s no specific reason for app crashing butif this regularly happens, check if there’s an update available for the app or phone and update it. You could also try uninstalling and re-installing the crashed app on your phone.
