VOICE India, China Set to Boost Global Smartphone Sales

A

researcher has said that low penetration in developing countries was to cause fast shipment growth, as phone sales in advanced nations are set to decline further. As we are set to move towards 2013, global smartphone shipments are expected to grow by 30.2 percent to 865 million units next year, accounting for about 43.9 percent of total cellphone shipments, boosted by strong demand from developing countries such as China and India, a Taiwan’s DigiTimes Research and forecasted this. This year, global smartphone shipments are expected to grow nearly 37 percent year-on-year to 664.6 million units. Smartphones are likely to grow at a fast rate in emerging markets such as China, Russia, India, Indonesia and South America, due to low smartphone penetration. Meanwhile, demand for high-end smartphones in Western European countries may be affected by the countries’ economic condition, because most have announced austerity measures that would weaken consumer spending. Next year 2013, growth for smartphone brands will depend on their partnerships with software developers, hardware manufacturers, the strength of market demand and telecommunications carriers’ policies. In addition, Nokia Oyj and Research In Motion Ltd may face growth limitations while attempting to transform their businesses, and online retailer Amazon.com Inc is poised to enter the already crowded smartphone market next year. But consider that according to a Digitimes Research report, worldwide smartphone shipments are set to expand by 30.2% to 865 million units next year — 43.9% of total cellphone shipments — with strong demand from the likes of China and India largely responsible for the increase thanks to their low current smartphone penetration. Here in India we are set for another round of spectrum battles ahead in the year 2013.

Shyam Networks Unveil Distribution Strategy for Middle East The company is looking for distributors in Dubai to drive its IP/E1 Radios and Wi-Fi Access Points Range in the Middle East Region

A

lcatel-Lucent is set to introduce new network technology that will enhance communications for utility companies to make power distribution across an entire grid, for the first time, ‘smart’ – from power generation through to customer delivery. Stuart Ravens, Principal Analyst, Energy & Utilities Technology with analyst firm Ovum said: “Alcatel-Lucent has long focused on IP/MPLS as the technology which can drive communications convergence in the utilities industry. This announcement puts Alcatel-Lucent in a strong position to exploit the transition of legacy networks to all-IP.”

A

Mobility Interview

”Government lacks action towards Indian manufacturing in Telecom” At a time when the Government of India has issued a policy paper which clearly states what is known as Preferential Market Access or PMA, the government has not done much to actually implement the same. Mobility magazine interacts with Mr. Ashok K. Aggarwal, DG, TEMA on the issue of India manufacturing and how serious is the government’s will on this? Q (1) What is the core focus of activities for TEMA? Please share your long term and short term objectives? The Core focus of the activities of TEMA are aimed at the development of Indian Manufacturing Sector including Innovation, R&D, Creation of IPR and the growth of Indian products in the Indian Telecom Sector. With that in mind, we have been pursuing at all levels in Govt. of India to bring in a conducive environment for the development of this Industry hitherto totally neglected by the Govt. Q No. 2. While TEMA and such organizations have tried to make a strong case for local manufacturing of telecom equipment, nothing major has happened in India. How can things change in the near future? The support of the Government for the telecom equipment manufacturing sector has been disappointing ever since the telecom sector started growing with the introduction of Mobile Telephony. On one hand the telecom service sector has grown manifold in the last one decade, on the other hand the manufacturing sector is still languishing at the initial stages itself. Despite the Government policy announcement from time to time (NTP -94, NTP – 99 PMA & now NTP – 2012) and the concerns raised by the Hon’ble Prime Minister in this regard on various forums over the last several years, no concrete steps have been sincerely initiated to understand & address the woes of the 12 | December 2012

manufacturing sector. But the hard reality is that the manufacturing sector has got totally neglected and completely manoeuvred by the foreign vendors. As a result, over the last one decade, the private telecom operators have, by and large, inducted equipment supplied by foreign countries to the extent of almost 100 %, not only giving rise to serious security threats to the nation but also virtually rendering Indian telecom Companies out of business with a near zero scope to compete and enter the market. Things can change in near future provided: • List of ‘Security Sensitive Network Products’ to be identified and notified by DOT. • Identified ‘Security Sensitive Network Products’ be divided into 4 to 5 Groups depending upon the criticality in the network from a national security perspective. • Identification and priority grading be done by a Committee constituted by the DOT with representations from DOT, Manufacturing Sector and a couple of other major stakeholders. • Items under group ‘1’ to be mandated to be procured only from “Indian Manufacturers” in the Ist year, extending to Group 2,3 and so on in the subsequent years progressively. • Indian Manufacturers would mean a company registered in India with equity of not less than 51% held by Indian Promoters who are also Indian Nationals. • Furthermore, its Chairman, Managing Director, and majority of Directors on the Board of the said company are Indian Nationals holding representative character of 51% equity holders. • It will result in Indian development and manufacturing of almost all critical telecom products by Indian Manufacturers over a period of next 4 to 5 years time in tune with the NTP 2012 vision.’ • It will ultimately result in an all inclusive development of the manufacturing industry not only in R&D, design and IPR creation but also address Security concerns of the nation progressively. • The Indian Telecom Network can thus become by and large fully secured over a period of next 4 to 5 years with the dominance of Indian made equipments by Indians. Q No.3 How does an organization like TEMA fight with global players which have established themselves quite strongly on Indian soil? There is basically no fight of our Organization with global players. As such, our fight is with the Government on policy issues which are favorably inclined to help global players who have virtually laid a siege on this huge Indian market ranked as No.2 in the world at the cost of real Indian Manufacturers. These non cohesive policies and the prevailing Tax structure have acted as a catalyst in offering the Indian market on a platter to these global players with both direct and indirect support accruing to them. This has also virtually wiped out the competition which could have come from Indian companies. Q No.4 What more can be done from the government side in order to encourage local manufacturing of telecom equipment in India and then promoting it as well? The onus of providing a thrust to the Indian Telecom Manufacturing Sector lies on the Government which has been MOBILITY

Mobility dec2012.indd 13

showing lip service to this segment of the telecom industry but has actually done nothing to put it on track. In fact, various policy decisions like Zero Customs Duty on import of equipment of the Govt. over the last two decades have resulted in not only helping the foreign manufacturers keep growing at a rapid pace but also a slow death for Indian manufacturers. We have suggested the following things to the Government: • Putting in place an appropriate mechanism to support funding and promotion of domestic R&D, IPR creation and Product development in a time bound manner. • The preferential market access referred to in the NTP 2012 need to be objectively framed at the earliest to ensure that real Indian Products start getting market access to help us in finally achieving our cherished dream of making India a global Telecom Equipment Manufacturing Hub by 2020. Q No.5 We have heard about the government's PMA policy. What has happened on the ground level? is there any preference which is being actually given to Indian manufacturers today? The PMA Policy of Government of India was announced in February, 2012 which envisages preference in procurement to domestically manufactured products for all Govt. purchases and for products which could have security implications in the country. However, we are quite disappointed that this policy has not been implemented as of date and as per the Industry reports the DOT is planning to make it effective with effect from 1st April, 2013 thereby losing more than a year. Whilst the Govt. has issued the list of products which will fall under the ambit of this policy for all Govt. purchases, they are still to notify the list of security sensitive products to be covered under the policy. This is despite that fact that the Preferential Market Access Policy in the present envisaged format where Domestically Manufactured Products are defined on the basis of ‘Value Addition’ criteria in the country is a misconceived initiative of the Government. We have been expressing this on all forums since then. The basic concept of Value Addition as such, does not benefit Indian companies at all. The definition of domestically manufactured product has to be first adopted properly as suggested above so that the real benefit accrues to Domestic Products. Q No.6 How can things change for those manufacturers who have Indian manufacturing right into their core focus? Things can change quickly for those manufacturers who have Indian Manufacturing rights in India through their own focus as they are sitting on the fence and only need one shot to enter the market. Some of the challenges having faced by these companies and which need to be taken care of by the Government are: a) Government’s ‘WILL’ to crack a whip to break the nexus between few dominant telecom operators and a few foreign telecom equipment suppliers. b) Proper Definition of domestically manufactured products as suggested above. c) Policy intervention as enumerated herein above d) Thwart suitably the intense lobbying against their interest by foreign telecom equipment manufacturers, trade associations of US and other countries. e) Timely and effective steps to promote domestic products in a time bound manner in pursuit of the objectives and targets laid down in NTP-2012

Other growth factors relate specifically to the rugged sector of the market where conditions determine the correct balance of portability and functionality. The most obvious characteristic that sets tablets apart is the lack of a physical keypad for data input. However, the widespread nature of smartphone technology means users are now accustomed to touch-screen technology to operate applications and perform functions like data entry and retrieval. Further, developers are skilled at writing applications to incorporate these faster, more-efficient user interfaces. From an operational perspective, a standing worker can easily use a tablet while holding it in one hand, whereas using a notebook computer requires that it be placed on a surface for keyboard utilization. Tablets are compact and take up less space when mounted in a vehicle. And they offer a display size that works best for mobile employees. Handheld devices like smartphones provide a high degree of portability, but their displays are often too small for efficient field operations or for presenting complex information to the mobile worker. And most importantly, in addition to their resistance to water, dust, shock, and vibration, rugged tablets are designed for the type of work performed by mobile

by an array of communications tools, including access to broadband internet, Wi-Fi service, Bluetooth connections for peripherals, and global positioning. These integrated systems are designed to function in rugged environments and adverse conditions. Adding computer power has adverse impacts on battery life and the amount of heat that is generated and must be dissipated. Radios draw a significant amount of power, especially when transmitting, which increases battery heat. Thus, tablet designs make trades between weight and total available battery capacity, selection of battery chemistries, thermal design, and power management to optimize user performance. The growth in the use of rugged tablets depends on achieving the right balance of capabilities and performance characteristics for the type of work our customers perform and the kind of environment they operate in. Finally, tablet growth will also be driven by business results. Businesses that embrace mobile computing report a gain in efficiency because they can reduce the amount of time or number of people needed to perform specific tasks. This lowers cost and often improves their customer satisfaction ratings. Increasingly, businesses are achieving a lower total cost of ownership for rugged tablets compared to consumer-grade products such as the iPad because of the significantly higher failure rates of non-rugged hardware.

oday there is a need for mobile communications which is outside the office environment and keeping this need in mind, private GSM networks are being designed. Unfortunately GSM phones are so convenient that employees call each other’s mobile when both parties are in the same building, which impacts on the phone bill. There are solutions for “corridor warriors”, but they rely on a combination of Wireless LAN technology and the use of dual-mode (WLAN and GSM) phones, so there is a significant investment cost. MOBILITY

Mobility dec2012.indd 19

Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have reacted to the broad threat posed by wireless VoIP and they are marketing new services based on existing and new technologies. In today’s scenario, a significant percentage of the average workforce has a 2G or 2.5G mobile phone and for employees the benefits of ‘anywhere, anytime’ communications outside the office outweigh the high cost of cellular telephony. Companies are prepared to pay a premium for road warrior calls, but their use by so-called corridor warriors is wasteful and it can add up to a significant percentage of the bill received every month. An ideal solution would allow these legacy devices to become PBX extensions, TDM or IP, when a road warrior walks into the office. This means that the mobility benefits would not only continue, they would be enhanced by the functionality of the corporate PBX, and internal calls would bypass the cellular network reducing or eliminating call costs. The result would be one preferred ‘anywhere, anytime’ device, and the ‘where’ would include the office environment. Moreover it would ideally be realized without the need to invest in new dual-mode phones. At present, there is a lot of hype and confusion about fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) and the benefits of dual-mode (WLAN / GSM) phones. The business proposition is the ability to make lowcost VoIP calls from fixed locations, i.e. homes, hot spots and offices that have engineered their WLAN to transport voice traffic. This development can also be used to intercept calls made from mobiles when both parties are in the same office building. Intelligence in the IP infrastructure can detect the presence of both parties and will transfer what would have been an external cellular call to an internal VoIP call. In addition, dual-mode phones will select the strongest signal, which will normally be that of the WLAN when in the office building or campus. In both cases the process is transparent to the user: calls are made in the same way. However, what the market wants is the ability to use their mobile phones in homes and offices and to be charged at fixed line rates. Dualmode phones are one way of realizing this objective, but there are others, as this paper will demonstrate. MNO’s have responded to the threat of wireless VoIP in a variety of ways. There are so-called zoned services for homes and flatrate pricing deals for all calls made within an organization. In addition, the industry is currently promoting the use of small mobile network cells in offices that provide coverage www.mobilityindia.com

within the office environment and supplement the macro GSM network. A third development has emerged from the migration of mobile network cores to IP and involves the deployment of UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) services using unregulated spectrum such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. And a fourth is a service bundle which provides free calls to parties who are on the same cellular network. A key element of the MNOs FMC proposition is the ability to move seamlessly between fixed line (WLAN) locations and mobile (GSM) networks. The objective is to

The mobility benefits would not only continue, they would be enhanced by the functionality of the corporate PBX, and internal calls would bypass the cellular network reducing or eliminating call costs. generate the perception that there is a single network and dissolve the difference between communicating in local and wide area networks. UMA realises this objective, but UMA services are thin on the ground and a UMA client device is required. Moreover, the technology is used to carry VoIP traffic back over the cellular network, so there is an additional charge. Seamless handover can also be realised using a public or private network server and client software. However, right now seamless handover looks like a solution that’s searching for a problem. New Service Models One model focuses on Voice over IP (VoIP) and the deployment of WLANs in offices, homes and hot spots. Another extends the GSM network into the office using micro-cells (aka femtocells), the sales proposition being free internal calls using regular mobile phones. A third is UMA and a fourth is flat rate pricing. The first approach is data-centric and it represents the extrapolation of a technology designed to handle one task (data) being used for something else (voice). The data-centric model is predicated on engineering WLANs for VoIP. In this case the communications device has to be a dual-mode (WLAN / GSM) phone, so a significant investment in new handsets and in additional WLAN hardware is required and a lot of internal GSM calls would have to be made before these costs could be justified. Mobility Trends for 2013

The emergence of a "New Consumer Economy"

W

e live in a world where consumers can buy just one song from an album, rent a car or a meeting room by the hour and purchase a single TV episode. It is a changed world, where people routinely buy or rent products and services at a very granular level - and they are becoming used to the idea. In 2013, we will start to see some of this thinking infiltrating the mobile world with more examples of application-centric, fine-grained data plans. "Buckets" of data have always been tricky, but people will understand data plans that give you 50 hours of Internet browsing, ten hours of video streaming or unlimited social media. And operators will have to be ready for this and package their mobile data provision differently, but those that do can ride the wave of this 'New Consumer Economy'. Policy Engagement Up until now operators have been

The network will start to act more like a guide, delivering a 'curated' experience to users, via real time, multi modal interactions that lend to easy adoption of new and contextually relevant services. In summary, the goal of policy engagement is to make these offers easy to understand, easy to adopt and easy to manage for users leading to greater monetization of data services for operators.

focused on simple policy enforcement of data traffic such as blocking, throttling etc. Policy engagement, on the other hand, focuses on richer and more meaningful interactions with users that are consuming data. Users will receive price plan offers and promotions based on how and when they interact with content and network services.

Mobile data pricing to diversify Mobile data pricing will diversify in 2013, which will make the market more complicated and more interesting. One of the reasons for this will be the increase in 4G adoption. Although many will keep with similar pricing strategies used for 3G, for fear of alienating subscribers there will be operators globally who adopt more innovative ways of pricing their 4G data. This has already been demonstrated in the US, where one regional operator has reported success with a lower-cost 'no frills' application-based data plan with a timelimited video streaming allowance. This has allowed the operator to upsell video passes on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, resulting in extra revenue from users who want to upgrade while reducing network traffic from those who are not interested in video enough to pay for it. This is all against the backdrop of regulators globally keeping an increasingly close eye on mobile data pricing and plans, meaning that leftfield decisions in some regions could force pricing innovation even if it is not currently planned. Monetization opportunities of overthe-top content have appeared at the top of analysts' predictions for some time now; nevertheless, there have been very few real and conclusive success stories so far. In developing countries, however, both sets of players are looking for ways to attract users and gain quicker service adoption as

the business growth will primarily come from mobile. Mobile, actionable data dominates Gartner's 2013 tech trends Mobile device management, HTML5, personal clouds and actionable data will be among the key disruptive forces in 2013 for companies Mobile devices, applications, cloud and big data companies can actually use for strategic advantage are the headliners for Gartner's top technology trends for 2013. Windows 8 will bring 140 form factors to market. The theme for 2013---according to Gartner---is that the information technology department has to navigate cloud, social, mobility and information as those trends play off of each other. Mobile as the top two picks isn't all that surprising. Most technology execs here have bring your own device on the brain. Mobile device management is top of mind too. Meanwhile, employees are bringing all sorts of devices to work. That trend could get worse since Windows 8 will bring 140 form factors to market. Android and iOS will dominate smartphones, but Windows Phone will gain "substantial share." For tech execs, the actual players don't manage. They have to get a handle on securing data and managing choice. • Android shipments will top iOS on tablets. • Windows 8 will be an option for enterprises more than individuals. • Enterprise app developers will see Windows tablets as a target device in 2013. • HTML5 will be the mainstream enterprise app vehicle. • Companies will have to exploit three different architectures for mobile apps. • Private app stores from enterprises will balloon. RIM is betting on such a move. Personal clouds will also play into the mobility theme for enterprises. In other areas, the Internet of things will digitize all businesses. The challenge will be making sense of all the data from image recognition, embedded sensors and other information related by physical objects. And by the year 2015, 70 percent of companies will have one executive in charge of overseeing Internet-connected devices and objects. The payoff will be in the supply chain, control and information services. December 2012 | 21

here is no doubt that Cloud computing services can deliver clear cut benefits to a host of companies, offering an outsourced, elastic, pay-as-you-go computing infrastructure. But on the other hand, there is skepticism when it comes to securing the cloud infrastructure for an enterprise. Just as the benefits are obvious, however, so too are the security concerns. When outsourcing data storage, applications and infrastructures to cloud service providers, how do organizations ensure that sensitive data remains secured? How do companies remain in control of critical information assets and compliant with all mandates and policies?

Risks to Data in Cloud Adoption Today, issues of risk, data privacy, and compliance are the chief inhibitors to most organizations’ adoption of cloud services. In fact, Gartner Group identifies data location risk, risk of data loss, and data security risk as three of the top five barriers to cloud adoption. While security can be seen as an obstacle to the broad adoption of cloud computing, it can in fact be an enabler. By finding a way to effectively safeguard data in the cloud, enterprises can begin to fully maximize the business potential of cloud offerings. The “virtual” nature of the cloud removes many of the physical work-flow and perimeter-based control points to contain sensitive information. Therefore, it is essential that cloud security platforms take on a data-centric approach. Enterprises are looking at security solutions that can fully leverage the business benefits of cloud environments—while ensuring trust, compliance, and privacy. Security solutions that offer intelligent, data-centric solutions that persistently protect data throughout the information lifecycle and evolve to support changing cloud delivery models—from today’s SaaS and private clouds, to the evolving demands of hybrid and public clouds. Today’s enterprise IT managers and CIOs are looking at cloud security solutions that can deliver broad set of solutions that enable both enterprises and cloud providers to protect data in the cloud. Hence, solutions that offer features including central key and policy management, robust encryption support, flexible integration, and more—that make cryptography as a service practical, efficient, and secure re being evaluated at various levels. Ensuring that only authorized users gain access to cloud-based resources is critical for cloud providers and enterprises. Providers need to ensure proper access controls for www.mobilityindia.com

The “virtual” nature of the cloud removes many of the physical workflow and perimeter-based control points to contain sensitive information. Therefore, it is essential that cloud security platforms take on a datacentric approach. users at client sites, and for administrators within the service provider’s organization. Any cryptographic system and trust in the protected data is only as strong as the underlying protection of the keys used to encrypt data. A centralized, hardened security appliance manages cryptographic keys, access control, and other security policies. In addition, a virtualized instance of this appliance is deployed in the cloud to replicate policies and security enforcement on the data. Security administrators can dictate policy based on business content, documents, and folders in order to ensure only authorized users and groups access sensitive data. And hence, hardware security modules offer centralized, FIPS- and Common Criteriacertified storage of cryptographic keys. Driven by a need to use the cloud’s elastic storage, enterprises can securely store data in the cloud, effectively using the cloud for the backup, disaster recovery, and archival of data. CIOs look for protection of stored data through a hardened appliance that centralizes encryption processing, keys, logging, auditing, and policy administration across file, application, and database systems. And most importantly, cloud is a target rich environment for cyber attacks on the interconnected critical fabric that weaves together the elastic computing, storage and connectivity in the back-end of the cloud data centers. Layer 3 and Layer 2 link encryption solutions are setting ideal examples when it comes to cloud security in order to harden this critical network infrastructure while maintaining low-latency -- high throughput data exchanges to keep the cloud operating at peak efficiency. Together, these solutions deliver the critical capabilities required for an enterprise to ward off any threat coming from the cloud side. December 2012 | 23

Apple iPhone 5 – As Perfect as it Gets

T

he sophistication and elegance that embodies Apple Iphone 5 is every bit as evident as the previous additions. But the overall finesse has definitely been taken up a notch or two with the slightly new design. Even if it was one of the most anticipated devices of the year, the expectation of a drastically different iPhone hasn’t really been met—to an extent. While the iPhone 5 is certainly slimmer (7.6mm) than the previous versions and longer, with a larger display at 4 inches (still Retina intact at a 640 x 1136 pixel resolution at 326 ppi and 800:1 contrast ratio), the overall design looks very similar to the 4 or 4S. The display also features a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating that serves its purpose to an extent. Smudges will still need to be dealt with the old fashioned way – a quick wipe on your sleeve or shirt. The elongated shape does, however, make for better handling and the ultra lightweight (112g) handset makes portability much better. The aluminium and glass casing, although looking quite premium, lacks a certain mechanical weight we’ve come to expect from feature rich high-end handsets. All that being said, just like those that came before it, one will still have that feelgood-factor that comes with owning an Apple device, even if they can’t afford it. The buttons beside the little switch-to-silent option as well as the power key are still by far the best example of premium furnishings for a handset. There’s zero play with the fixtures and even though the handset feels quite delicate, it has a pretty solid structure. But if anyone says that the rear panel is scratch resistant, they’re lying. After a few trysts with keys and coins in my pockets, the handset emerged with a few bruises. The new Lightning connector fits snugly into the socket and stays put quite firmly. The latest iPhone iteration ships with the latest iOS version, i.e. version 6.0. iOS 6 has brought some much needed features to the iPhone/iPad/iPod line-up, but this pretty much covers all Apple devices and is not unique to this specific model. 26 | December 2012

Micromax Superfone Canvas 2 A110 – the Real Super Phone

ith the huge success of the Superfone Canvas A100, Micromax has decided to the bar once again for what a sub-10K Android smartphone should have. With the same massive 5-inch screen making a comeback, they’ve managed to fit in a dual-core CPU this time – all for the same price as the previous one. Too good to be true? With this handset, you get a nice chunky volume rocker on one side along with a power/sleep button on the other side. The phone appears larger than it actually is due to thick bezels on either side. There is a row of sensors beside the chrome plated earpiece and the back cover is quite sturdy and doesn’t scratch easily. The matt finish helps keep fingerprints away. The 8MP shooter produces quite a bulge at the back so you need to be careful as the lens cover will scratch easily. The 5-inch LCD display has quite a low resolution of 854 x 480 which makes images, icons, etc. lose their sharpness. The screen doesn’t appear to be of a very good quality either as the viewing angles are pretty poor and there’s terrible banding throughout. Overall, the Canvas 2 is built well but is too bulky and quite heavy as well. We could have done without the chrome trim along the edges which quite frankly, gives the phone a cheap look. But then again, it is a cheap phone so there’s that. Unfortunately, the placement of the microSD card does not allow for hot-swap as the battery gets in the way.

LG Optimus Vu – The Cool handset

riving better value for the end users, LG has delivered decent, value for money Android phones in the past, with the Optimus One P500 being one of the more popular ones, but only with moderate success. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and seeing the success Samsung has achieved with the Galaxy Note, LG has decided to take that route in hopes of wooing some undecided customers. The Optimus Vu is by no means an ordinary smartphone; in fact, we doubt it even qualifies as one, or even a phablet for that matter. Unlike the Galaxy Note, which still maintains its 16:9 aspect ratio, the Optimus Vu sports a 4:3 aspect ratio. Any sense of ergonomics goes for a toss here when you pack PRICE IN INDIA a 5-inch screen with this aspect ratio. 34,990 The Vu has a row of four capacitive buttons below the screen—the first three being the CONTACT same as the ones on the Galaxy Nexus and the fourth one being the ‘Option’ menu. ZenFocus myZenTab 708BH – Value for Money

T

ablet PCs are soon changing the way people communicate and entertain themselves on the move, and 7-inch budget Android tablets seem to be highly welcomed by the Indian market. As per the manufacturer, the myZenTab 708BH is built using a metal shell, but it doesn’t seem like it. The rear panel is completely madec of plastic and the frame could be metal. The exterior has a matte-finished steel-grey colour, which looks like it is made of metal, but is not. The tablet is around 11.7 mm thick and weighs about 347 grams. The shell is firm and rugged but not as sturdy as one would expect. The front panel sports the 7-inch display along with a front facing VGA camera and three capacitive touch buttons for Home, Back and Menu. The volume rocker and power/standby buttons take their place on the top, while the right side sports all the necessary interfaces. These include the power and headphone sockets, a microSD card slot, the mini USB PC interface and a mini HDMI port. Alongside these interfaces is a tiny hole for the microphone and a small window for the speaker grille. The rear is a plain back with a curved surface and features only the necessary port names and the company logo. Features The 708BH is powered by the Allwinner Boxchip A10 chipset SOC, which is codenamed as Sun4i Crane. The processor

is an ARMv7 clocked at 1GHz and uses the MALI-400 GPU for acceleration. The RAM supplied is 512MB, while the internal storage is a good 8GB. However, of this 8GB internal storage, 5.35GB is available for user data and 1GB is reserved for app installation. The display is the regular 7-inch LCD screen seen on all the 7-inchers around and has a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The front-facing camera is a 0.3 MP. The operating system installed on the 708BH is Android ICS. Connectivity options are Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and 3G support via USB dongles. Lastly, the battery supplied inside is a 3200 mAh battery, which the manufacturer claims is capable of giving you at least a 5-hour runtime. The 708BH has a similar variant in the family—the 708B, which is a slightly downscaled version of the former. It features identical specs except for the Box A10 chipset, half the built-in storage, a lower rated battery and a plastic shell in place of metal. It is also thinner and cheaper than the 708BH. The 708BH uses the Android ICS 4.0.x operating system with the stock interface. Though the tablet uses 1GB of RAM and a MALI-400 GPU, the user interface is a tad sluggish. The sensitivity of the touchscreen seems like it is the culprit for the underperforming UI. We did try to tweak all possible settings, but it does not improve the performance of the UI. Moving on, the 708BH has only a twitter app thrown in with no other freebie apps, unlike other budget tablet manufacturers who flood the app drawer with too many useless apps.
