Keep Your Smartphone Secure The smartphones usually support a wide range of functionality – web browsing, email, voice and instant messaging over the internet, capturing, storing and transmitting audio, videos and photos, enabling social networking, multi-user games, banking and many other activities. This is why we rely so much on our smartphones and store so much sensitive data on it to make our lives easier. With all these sensitive data onboard a tiny device, we should pay more attention to keeping it safe and away from anyone unwanted. However, many of these tools and features introduce new security issues, or increase existing risks. Nowadays smartphones are capable of doing so much more than the mobile phones of a few years ago – but this greatly extended range of capabilities has also seen the introduction of some new security risks.

Advertisers: Prodot Intex STK

Because we’re using our phones for a much wider range of activities, so we all need to take sensible precautions to ensure our phones and our information are safe from malware attacks and cybercriminals. The more you use smartphones, the more you need to become aware of the associated risks and take appropriate precautions. Smartphones are powerful amplifiers and distributors of your personal data. They are designed to provide as much connectivity as possible and to link to social networking services by default. This is because your personal data is valuable information that can be aggregated, searched and sold.

Microsoft’s Satya Nadella shares more on reinventing productivity

A

t Future Decoded in London, an event for UK business leaders to discuss the future of work and business, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke about Microsoft’s vision for the future of productivity. During a moderated Q&A with Microsoft Chief Envisioning Officer Dave Coplin, Satya shared more about how Microsoft is thinking about productivity in a very broad way and how Microsoft is uniquely positioned to help people get our scarcest commodity, time, back. You can read more about

recent momentum behind Microsoft’s focus on productivity in this blog post from Frank Shaw. Satya mentioned that at its core, Microsoft is the productivity and platform company for the mobile-first and cloud-first world. He said “we will reinvent productivity to empower every person and every organization on the planet to do more and achieve more.” You may have seen recent news from us, such as the Incubation Apps from the Microsoft Garage, Dropbox partnership, Cities Unlocked and Office Mobile Updates, all of which illustrate how Microsoft is helping people achieve more by giving people the right tools – for work, home and on the go, on any device. You’ll continue to see more from the company on this front.

Analytics to Ensure Profitability for CSPs and Customers Many people are under the assumption that ‘Analytics’ is the silver bullet to derive insights from data but among all the bells and whistles people forget to see through the real problem. Srinivas Bhogle, Director and Country Manager, (TEOCO) Telecom Analytics Company

Combining roaming data with geolocation information can help CSPs detect exactly where these highmargin services are being used and where they are not performing correctly

I

n the current mature telecom market, the main source of growth available to communications service providers (CSPs) comes from poaching subscribers from competitors. And since the cost of gaining new customers is much higher than the cost of maintaining existing ones, keeping current customers happy has become a top priority for CSPs. In the quest to maintain high customer satisfaction levels, CSPs are taking a page out the retail playbook, using Customer Experience Management (CEM) tools to identify premium 'VIP' customers and provide this elite group with superior customer service, including customized promotions and perks. But understanding exactly who service providers should consider VIPs isn't always clear, as the following example illustrates. A well known communication service provider wanted to understand their roaming costs and approached us for help. On assessing their data, we found a single customer who was generating over ten thousand dollars in revenue a month as a roamer. From a marketing perspective, this subscriber is of high value - a VIP. But when we looked beyond retail revenue, including the roaming business partnerships and the wholesale agreements, we found this subscriber was actually generating almost three dollars in costs for every dollar of revenue brought in. This one subscriber created a loss for both their own accounts almost twenty thousand dollars a month - and for the larger group within the CSPs organization. One outlier can wipe out profitability for a whole sub-segment. 12

mobility November 2014

What is the moral of this example? It's not just about a great customer experience; it is about ensuring a great, profitable customer experience. More revenue does not always mean more profit Ensuring profitability and making sound business decisions, not just subscriber acquisitions and retention, need to be top priority. After all, a CSP may have the happiest subscribers in the industry - but if they aren't profitable, then what's the point? Many traditional initiatives undertaken by CSPs have a direct impact on the bottomline. For instance, Margin Assurance has traditionally been a finance-driven set of processes, practices and technology solutions to improve business performance. This means maximizing revenues from customers, minimizing operational costs, and optimizing profitability. Service Assurance has traditionally been a network-driven set of processes, practices and technology solutions to improve business operations. This means minimizing network faults and downtimes, maximizing successful transactions and optimizing network utilization. And as mentioned earlier, CSPs worldwide have embraced the collective push for CEM. It is clear that both Margin Assurance and Service Assurance remain key initiatives for every operator. What is apparent is that new CEM solutions cannot be created in a vacuum, but must interface with key solutions across the organization to provide a consistent and unified view of the subscriber experience, along with network and business performance. By analyzing

data acquired from all of these sources, CSPs begin to really understand how making a change at one level will impact other parts of the business. The traditional 'stovepipe' management style - where the network team has its own data, the marketing team has its separate data, finance has its data, and customer care and billing have their data hinders the ability to make the best business decisions. Being able to analyze data sets from across the organization is what will really drive a better, more profitable, customer experience. For instance, combining quality of service data from the radio network with profitability data from finance can help CSPs determine and prioritize their small cell strategy to reduce congestion and enhance call quality. Which customers are most profitable -and should they be prioritized? Combining roaming data with geo-location information can help CSPs detect exactly where these high-margin services are being used and where they are not performing correctly. With limited company resources, both in terms of financial and human capital, which problem areas get prioritized? To answer this question, CSPs need to have an understanding of profitability down to the individual subscriber level. As the above example illustrates, even though a customer may be generating significant revenues, he can actually be an even larger source of loss. Is this a subscriber you want to devote valuable resources to and label as a 'VIP'? Possibly, but this you know only if you can first identify the problem and understand it from both a business - and a bottomline - perspective. www.mobilityindia.com CMYK

Swipe Sense 5.5" Phablet A budget device with some extra flair

S

wipe Technologies introduced Swipe Sense phablet in August. The unique feature of this device is that it gives you some added features in the budget segment. Features like fingerprint sensor and off-screen gesture sensing is some key feature of this device.

Looks and Features The Swipe Sense sports a 5.5 inch (960 x 540 pixels) qHD IPS display. It is 7.8mm thick and weighs 158 grams. The phone has a sturdy build with rounded edges. At the front, the phone has a 3.2MP front-facing camera along with the proximity and ambient light sensors, earpiece and LED notification light. Below, the phone has three capacitive buttons for home back and menu. Using these tools does improve your selfies to some extent; a self timer is also present for selfies. On the top we have the 3.5m audio jack and the micro USB port, the power button is present on the right side of the phone, Volume rockers are seen on the left. At the back we can see the Swipe logo in the center on the plastic rear panel of the phone. The Swipe Sense has a 8MP autofocus rear camera with LED Flash at the back. Below the flash we can see the fingerprint sensor. Swipe Sense has a removable back cover and a 2250mAh removable battery. The phone has two SIM card slots, one is normal SIM and other is micro SIM. Also a micro SD card slot is present.

Performance Swipe Sense is not that attractive in build but is sleek and lightweight. It gives you smooth performance for your day to day general usage. The graphics look good on the large 5.5 screen, which enhanced the gaming experience. No heat up issue even with continuous gaming but call quality is not that great. Now that main USP of this device which is the fingerprint scanner, which takes quite sometime for registering the fingerprint, but once registered you can use your finger print to unlock the phone which is a good option for security reasons. However, it takes time to get used to the scanning process and hence the phone has an alternate password system to unlock your phone. Another feature in the Swipe Sense is the gesture sensing which allows user to move your hand over the sensor to navigate. This feature can be accessed for Gallery, Music and Camera. Moreover, there is also an “Off Screen Gesture” feature that once enabled will let users draw, double tap the screen to start and control www.mobilityindia.com

apps. Actions like launching camera, flashlight, controlling music can be done with these offscreen gestures. The front camera is good for selfies and video chats. In order to enhance your selfies, it has feature called Face beauty that offers three categories like Wrinkle removal, Whiten and Shape. All these three categories can be selected from Low, Medium and High. Using these tools does improve your selfies to some extent. Finally, a self timer is also present for selfies. The battery life of the phone is an area of concern due to its 5.5 inch screen. The phone’s battery will disappoint you as it drained fast if you play games, so in heavy usage it will give you about 6-7 hrs of battery life only.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha Finally Some Metal

T

his is a much improved better looking smartphone from Samsung. And its launch gives tough time to iPhone and Sony Z3. So we feel this is the right device at the right time from Samsung. At IFA 2014, Samsung Galaxy Alpha impressed many with its looks and feel. Samsung comes with its new design approach with the Galaxy Alpha. It features a sophisticated design in a carefully constructed compact body with a metal frame and a solid finish that gives you a premium feel.

Looks and Features:

Galaxy Alpha is slim and light and equipped with a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display and is powered by an Octa Core processor which delivers high performance via Advanced Multiprocessing, alternating between the cores as per the workload. There is also 2GB of RAM, a 4G modem and 32GB of internal storage. It has 12 MP (rear) / 2.1 MP (front) camera and 1860 mAh of battery. It runs on Android 4.4 KitKat with Samsung’s TouchWiz overlay. The Galaxy Alpha also includes innovative features such as Ultra-Power Saving Mode, S Health, Finger Print Scanner, Private Mode, Heart Rate Monitor and connectivity with the latest Samsung Gear Fit, Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and the recently announced Gear S wearables. The Galaxy Alpha supports 4G, LTE CAT 6 which supports up to 300 Mbps download speeds.

Performance:

The entire design of the handset is very fresh from Samsung. The chassis is super slim and the metal frame is similar to that on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 design. In the hand, it feels wafer thin and feather-light, with a weight of 115g. Samsung has kept the back of Alpha a removable polycarbonate back rather all-metal uni-body chassis. Samsung has decided to put a 720p screen on the device which is a bit of a disappointment. The 4.7-inch Super AMOLED screen on board boasts a resolution of 1280x720 and images & videos look bright and clear. The Galaxy Alpha is a speedy performer across the board. It is blisteringly fast and handles most tasks with ease. It's also a pretty good gaming performer. The Galaxy Alpha's software follows a well-worn path Samsung's TouchWiz UI atop the latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat. And for the most part, it is identical to the software you'll find on the Galaxy S5 and the smartphone comes with 32GB internal storage. However, Samsung

Performance

Galaxy S5 comes with microSD slot of up to 64GB for additional storage, while the Samsung Galaxy Alpha has no external storage. Content looks great on the Alpha’s screen, especially that captured with the smartphone’s rear camera; you can have a shortcut to the camera straight from the lockscreen. For Selfies, the 2.1 megapixels front-cam has enough software to ensure photos retain focus. The Alpha continues the tradition of coming with a heart sensor and a finger scanner. Battery life is also very decent as we found the 1860 mAh battery runs 23-26 hrs in day-to-day usage, but power saving mode can give you a 39 hrs of battery life in a single charge. The Alpha blew away most of its competitors in the benchmark scores on the 3D Mark Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark test it scores 20,458. The Galaxy Alpha also scored high on the Quadrant benchmark, coming in at 23,334.

Verdict: Samsung has taken a fresh approach

to design by adding metal in its smartphone. Powered by an Octa Core processor it delivers high performance via Advanced Multiprocessing.

Karbonn Sparkle V The Cheapest Android One Smartphone: A Deal Worth Considering

A

ndroid One is finally out and the first three smartphones look similar and offers the same set of specifications. Karbonn Sparkle V is one of the three smartphones in the Google’s Android One lineup that was launched to penetrate deeper into tier-2 and tier-3 markets. As the other Android One smartphones, Spice Dream UNO Mi-498 and the Micromax Canvas A1 have similar specifications. Let’s look how this cheapest Android One smartphone is performed in the test. This will not only allow Android to penetrate deeper into tier-2 and tier-3 markets, it will also boost the sales of Indian smartphone OEMs. We take a look at the smartphone, Sparkle V, from Karbonn which is priced at Rs. 6399.

Features and looks:

The Karbonn Sparkle V comes with decent specs to mark its presence in this segment. It runs on 1.3 GHz quad core processor, 1GB RAM, 4GB ROM (inbuilt storage for apps only), and offers external storage support up to 32GB. The dualSIM phone supports 2G and 3G connectivity, WiFi and Bluetooth. It comes with a front (2MP) and a back (5MP) cameras. The phone sports a 4.5inch FWVGA IPS display with 480x854 resolution and 240 ppi pixel density, the power source is a removable 1700 mAh Li-Po battery and it supports FM Radio as well.

Overall

Performance:

Best part is that Google brought the similar stock Android experience (as we have seen on the Nexus devices and the Google Play editions of the some flagship smartphones) to entry-level Android smartphones. All the usual apps runs smooth and without any lag. Currently Karbonn Sparkle V runs on Android 4.4 KitKat, but as the phone has been jointly developed by Google and Karobnn, you can expect it to soon get the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Camera is decent enough, but the 2MP front camera is available only for video chats, and not for photographs which is a major drawback of this device. Though the device is 3G-enabled, like the Moto E, you can’t set your mobile network to only 3G (though you get a preferred choice), and is a major drawback as the phone keeps on switching between Edge or GPRS and 3G. IPS display with 480x854 resolution and 240ppi pixel density, which is decent for a comfortable viewing experience. www.mobilityindia.com

Price:

Rs 5999 at Snapdeal.com

Verdict:

The question many people ask is why Android One, and why is it different from other similarly priced smartphones? The answer is the software Sparkle V gives better is than its same priced competing brand. And as Google has promised Android 5.0 Lollipop update to Android One devices, we believe that those devices will receive the update much faster than their competitors. So this Karbonn Sparkle V is a great option in this price tag.

Pros:

Affordable Price, attractive features, better battery life

Cons:

Getting it Right Blaupunkt became an independent company in 2009 when it was separated from Bosch. Since then they have been growing by more than 40% a year. Rahul Devjani, Director, Blaupunkt India, in an Interaction with Mobility magazine, shares his views.

Rahul Devjani, Director, Blaupunkt India

Mobility: What is Blaupunkt India's roadmap for India and Global?

• Smart Phone Integration • Android.

Rahul Devjani: Blaupunkt has a 90-year history of innovation in the Industry--since the world first car radio was launched in 1930s and innovation continues to be an integral part of our DNA. Today, Blaupunkt is the best placed to drive the technology changes in the infotainment industry-–we have the technology platforms in place. We are the only Tier 1 player present in both the after-market and OE segments. Most new technologies are first introduced in the retail/ CE segments and then extended to the OE space, giving us a first mover advantage. We have also developed a scalable Android-based connected car platform which positions us well to cater to OEM requirements in 2015-16.

Mobility: What big news can we expect from Blaupunkt?

Mobility: How many product lines does Blaupunkt have currently? Rahul Devjani : As a company Blaupunkt has a wide range of product lines and a comprehensive portfolio for OE and retail segments in the infotainment space including radios (from integrated to 1 and 2 din systems), multimedia navigation, rear seat entertainment, sound (including speakers subwoofers and amplifiers) and accessories. In addition to automotive, we also have products for the building, aviation and marine segments. In automotive, we serve passenger and commercial segments with 12-24V solutions for passenger cars, trucks, buses, construction and land moving equipment, caravans, etc. We are working with most of the world leading automotive OEMs in these segments

Mobility: What are the new technology innovations you are coming up with in this segment? Rahul Devjani : We have developed a scalable Android platform which will serve us in the coming years. Blaupunkt will be focussing on three technologies and will aim to be market leaders in these technologies in the coming years. • Navigation www.mobilityindia.com

Rahul Devjani : Lot of new exciting products and innovations are planned for 2015 both in the OE and retail segments, details will be made available in the near future.

Mobility: Any tie-ups and mergers you are entering into in India? Rahul Devjani: We are currently working with or discussing with all major OE in India but cannot disclose any names or projects. We also continue to expand our footprint globally – we currently operate in 64 countries and will be making a big push into the MEA and Latin America region over the coming months.

Blaupunkt is the world first infotainment company and we have our own manufacturing for over 90 years Mobility: What is your current growth rate in India, and what are you look for in next one year? Rahul Devjani : Blaupunkt became an independent company in 2009 when it was separated from Bosch - since then we have been growing by more than 40% a year. We have always enjoyed brand loyalty and a premium perception in India, and now with an expanding product portfolio across price segments and a pan India footprint, our retail operations have been growing by more than 50% a year. We expect retail to continue to grow at 20-30% over the next few years.

Mobility: Which are your products that are doing well in the Indian market? Rahul Devjani : As a company Blaupunkt has a wide range of product lines and a comprehensive portfolio for OE and retail segments in the

infotainment space including radios (from integrated to 1 and 2 din systems), multimedia navigation, rear seat entertainment, sound (including speakers, subwoofers and amplifiers) and accessories. All these products are available in India.

Mobility: Please give your final take on this industry segment Rahul Devjani: It’s a very interesting time to be in the automotive infotainment industry technology, connectivity and convergence are fast changing the landscape. The car radio is no longer just a tuner or music system, but has become an entertainment, productivity, information and communication console in the car. Today, connectivity is not just about connecting with external media sources like USB, aux, SD or even Bluetooth but instead opens up a wide range of possibilities including connectivity (command and control) of smartphones, connected navigation with life traffic and additional layers of data, connectivity with the car (CAN) for display of vehicle parameters, driver assistance, etc. "Asia has always been an early adapter of technology and the Indian customer is also demanding a truly connected experience in the car." The trends that will shape the industry are: • Today connected navigation with life traffic is becoming a highly desired feature with increasing inter-city travel • Vehicle connectivity – for driver information and assist • Android platforms with Internet connectivity and applications • Smartphones integration and leveraging full functionality and processing power of smartphones in the car • Connected rear seat entertainment solutions • Smarter more intuitive HMIs including voice Our OE radio platforms incorporate all the above technologies and our 2014-15 retail product portfolios also includes a number of these features, so expect to hear a lot of exciting news from Blaupunkt in the coming months. In addition we have established a market leading position in the OE rear seat entertainment space. mobility November 2014

“We focus on providing the best possible customer experience” V

ideocon, with 27 years of association with Indian consumers, is one of the India’s largest Consumer Durables Company providing latest technology products in categories such as TVs, washing machines, ACs, refrigerators, microwave ovens and other home appliances. With 3 global R&D centers, 7 manufacturing units and highly skilled work force of over 25,000 employees including over 7000 outside India, Videocon has been introducing latest technologies and products to consumers in India. In 2010, Videocon launched its most successful venture Videocon Mobiles. Mr. Jerold Pereira, CEO, Videocon Mobiles, shares, “We are the only domestic player in India who is focusing seriously on convergence of technology to create smart homes where appliances like refrigerators, televisions, washing machines, air-conditioners all can be connected and controlled by smartphones. We have 360 million households in India and convergence is at the top of our mind. As you know, Videocon has different verticals like telecom, satellite television, home appliances, etc. We have been in the Indian market for the last 27 years. We have 3%-4% share in the smartphone market in terms volume. But I would like to say that our objective is not pushing up volumes. We want to do that in a way that is profitable to the company.” The desire to innovate and the passion to enrich consumers lives, has earned Videocon a place in India’s top 15 Business Houses and among 100 emerging Giants of the world (BCG Study).

‘Make In India’ concept is still not economically feasible Jerold avers, “We are designing and manufacturing feature phones in India. As far

Mr. Jerold Pereira, CEO, Videocon Mobiles, www.mobilityindia.com

as smartphones are concerned, we are designing in India and we also add apps in India, but we getting the volume manufacturing done overseas. Before we can start full-scale manufacturing in India, the ecosystem in India has to rise to a level that makes domestic manufacturing economically feasible.” Driven by ideas, led by innovation is at the core of everything, from conceptualization to product design, the company could come up with products that not just meet the needs of the consumer but exceed their expectations. Be it a cutting-edge smart-phone or a basic yet feature loaded multimedia phone, Videocon Mobile Phones make sure that each new product is a fresh delight to its customers.

Expected future trends Regarding future trends in smartphones, Jerold opines, “Screen sizes will increase in future. Nowadays 3.5-inch phones are on the decline and 4-ich screens are replacing them. 3G segment is increasing and we can see 4G making its entry. Smartphones are selling more than anticipated in terms of numbers which shows how well smartphones are being accepted in the Indian market. But I do not think feature phones will disappear completely, because some people of certain age-groups, who just need to talk still use feature phones which are also easy to carry and handle, still prefer feature phones. Convergence will be the new trend with smartphones.” Videocon’s range of Tablets & Smartphone are a perfect combination of technology & style which gives you access to thousands of apps, runs on superfast processors and latest Android technology. You will also never miss on the fun with powerful battery support & light weight that give effortless and sustainable experience. There is an ongoing debate on the issue of online retailers cutting into the pie of traditional channel. In this regard, Jerold states, “Videocon’s supply chain has been built on traditional model of channel network and the traditional channel has been and will remain the winner of bread and butter for us. That does not mean that we should ignore the ecommerce opportunity, but we have to play with caution

in a way that will not impact the traditional channel. We launch only specific models on the ecommerce sites which are not released on the traditional channel. This will ensure that there would be no clash. In US ecommerce forms 8% overall. In India, only in certain segments like smartphones, online sales may be 8% or 10%. But taking the sales of all the consumer goods, online sales in India can be less than 1%. In future online sales will increase.” Videocon’s innovative and world class range of phones is backed by prompt and efficient customer service thorough its countrywide network of over 500 service centers and dedicated customer help desk. This combined with the heritage and consumer-centric business approach, places Videocon ahead of others.

Videocon’s marketing strategy Regarding marketing strategy and areas of operations, Jerold asserts, “We are cautious and steady in our approach; we don’t believe in moving superfast and then crashing out. We have 2 manufacturing plants, 1 in Aurangabad and 1 in Kashipur for feature phones. We are also planning to open plants in Hyderabad and Mangalore. As far as smartphones are concerned, it is not possible to manufacture everything in India, but we are making effort to manufacture at least partly in India. We are doing well in high-end feature phone segment. For example, we have launched a high-end feature phone with camera, powerful 3000 mAh battery and local language support. It is doing pretty well. We are targeting some specific regions for sales. In Punjab, we have a good market. In Telangana and AP put together we have good share. In Karnataka, we have good value-share with more smartphones selling there. In UP and Bengal, we are doing well. We felt it is not wise to focus on all states at the same time. Once we are well established in targeted states, we will focus on other states. We have been in the market for the past 27 years means customers have faith in us and also do expect certain quality standard from us. We deliver what the customer expects from us in terms quality, reliability, contemporary technology, etc. We put the best info into the smart phones we sell in terms of features, software, etc to give the best possible user experience at particular price point. ” mobility November 2014

Smartphones collect and compile an increasing amount of sensitive information to which access must be controlled to protect the privacy of the user and the intellectual property of the company.

M

obile security or mobile phone security has become increasingly important in mobile computing. It is of particular concern as it relates to the security of personal and business information now stored on smartphones. More and more users and businesses employ smartphones as communication tools, but also as a means of planning and organizing their work and private life. Within companies,

these technologies are causing profound changes in the organization of information systems and therefore they have become the source of new risks. More and more users and businesses employ smartphones as communication tools and also as a means of planning and organizing their work and private life. Within companies, these technologies are causing profound changes in the organization of information systems and therefore they have become the source of new risks. Indeed, smartphones collect and compile an increasing amount of sensitive information to which access must be controlled to protect the privacy of the user and the intellectual property of the company. According to a research, the Mobile Security Services market will total around $1.88 billion by the end of 2013. All smartphones, as computers, are preferred targets of attacks. These attacks exploit weaknesses related to smartphones that can come from means of communication

Prime Targets for Attackers

Who are the attackers?

Data: Smartphones are devices for data management, therefore, they may contain sensitive data like credit card numbers, authentication information, private information, activity logs (calendar, call logs).

Professionals: Whether commercial or military, they focus on the three targets mentioned above. They steal sensitive data from the general public, as well as undertake industrial espionage. They will also use the identity of those attacked to achieve other attacks.

Identity: Smartphones are highly customizable, so the device or its contents are associated with a specific person. For example, every mobile device can transmit information related to the owner of the mobile phone contract, and an attacker may want to steal the identity of the owner of a smartphone to commit other offenses.

Thieves: They want to gain income through data or identities they have stolen. The thieves will attack many people to increase their potential income.

Availability: By attacking a smartphone one can limit access to it and deprive the owner of the service.

www.mobilityindia.com

Black hat hackers: They specifically attack availability. Their goal is to develop viruses, and cause damage to the device. In some cases, hackers have an interest in stealing data on devices. Grey hat hackers: They reveal vulnerabilities. Their goal is to expose vulnerabilities of the device. Grey hat hackers do not intend on damaging the device or stealing data.

like Short Message Service (SMS, aka text messaging), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS),Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth and GSM, the de facto global standard for mobile communications. There are also attacks that exploit software vulnerabilities from both the web browser and operating system. Finally, there are forms of malicious software that rely on the weak knowledge of average users.

Emerging Solutions In the wake of frequent security breaches and data theft, enterprises globally are under tremendous pressure to provide an end-toend secure framework. The BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) trend is adding to the woes of the modern day CIOs. Devices nowadays are extremely powerful and a small incident like misplacing or losing a mobile device can translate into a major security breach. For optimal security, organizations should seek out solutions that are capable of meeting corporate

When a smartphone is infected by an attacker? # The attacker can manipulate the way smartphone can communicate and send commands which will be used to send unsolicited messages (spam) via SMS or email. # The attacker can easily force the smartphone to make phone calls. # A compromised smartphone can record conversations between the user and others and send them to a third party. # An attacker can also steal a user's identity, usurp their identity and thus impersonate the owner. This raises security concerns as smartphones can be used to place orders, view bank accounts or are used as an identity card. # The attacker can reduce the utility of the smartphone by discharging the battery. As they can launch an application that will run continuously on the smartphone processor, requiring a lot of energy and resulting in draining the battery. # The attacker can remove or misuse the personal (photos, music, videos, etc) or professional data (contacts, calendars, notes, etc) of the user.

Data safe in cloud storage Today, the world is more connected than ever before but in a decade wearable technology will be the norm – whether a smart glass or a smart watch you wear at the gym hooked up to your heart rate and connected to the cloud. “As the cyber threat environment evolves, threat protection must evolve as well. With the emergence of targeted attacks and advanced persistent threats, it is clear that a new approach to cyber security is required in cloud. Traditional techniques are simply no longer adequate to secure data against cyber attacks. Advanced persistent threats (APTs) and targeted attacks have proven their ability to penetrate standard security defenses and remain undetected for months while siphoning out valuable data or carrying out destructive actions. And the companies you rely on most are

network requirements while concurrently providing three layers of security at the device, server and network level. With the right mobile container solution, organizations don’t have to compromise their security requirements to allow employees to carry the devices they choose. But the challenge becomes preventing the secure mobile computing environment from encroaching on the user experience. Manoj Khilnani, Country Marketing Head – Enterprise, BlackBerry India suggested some

some of the most likely targets – financial institutions, healthcare organizations, major retailers and others. The ideal solution would weave your entire security infrastructure into a custom and adaptable defense tuned to your particular environment and particular attackers. It would enable you to not only detect and analyze these attacks, but fight back against your attackers. Businesses today are intrigued by the promise of cloud computing – the agility, flexibility and cost savings. Invariably, questions such as ‘How secured is the cloud?’ arises. In addition to Trend Micro’s portfolio of security solutions for cloud computing, Trend Micro is proud to announce a new, cloud-based, productivity tool for enterprises as well as SMEs to secure their journey to cloud,” said, Mr. Dhanya Thakkar, MD, India & SEA, Trend Micro

points to set up a secure Security Solution. These are as follows: Encryption of Data: A key element of security is encryption technology, which is critical to protecting the confidentiality and integrity of a digital transaction between two endpoints, such as a mobile device and a corporate server located behind a firewall. Providing an integrated approach to mobile security, in which data is encrypted while at rest (stored on a digital device) or in transit, is the best protection against the loss of data

Mr. Manoj Khilnani

Country Marketing Head – Enterprise, BlackBerry India

BlackBerry has delivered that solution for the past 15 years and we will continue to deliver that solution to our valued customers for years to come. Our focus is on building the most resilient platform in the industry that enables our customers to better protect their key assets. 26

or a security breach that could impact the profitability, competitiveness or reputation of an organization. Strong encryption guards against data integrity compromises in these environments, which are typically treated by network engineers or mobile security experts as hostile and untrustworthy. It is important to note that encryption technologies differ significantly in the degrees of protection they offer. Containerization: For employees, the ultimate value in BYOD is the ability to have both work and personal functionality on a single device that is capable of keeping their data separate and secure. With the right BYOD solution, organizations will be able to strike the right balance between security, user experience and total cost of ownership. This concept is known as containerization. The concept of containerization refers to a solution that creates an encrypted zone or container on a device within which corporate apps and data can reside. Policy controls apply only to what is included in the container, instead of the entire device. It simply means separating the corporate mobile apps and data from the personal. Access to data in the container requires secure authentication independent of any other device settings or restriction. “Mobile security is an extremely fast growing area and focusing on how these changes and trends impact the way BlackBerry delivers products and services is a huge part of our business. Blackberry is the only Enterprise Mobility Management provider that can secure a multi-platform environment based on varying levels of risk and compliance, from meeting the strictest requirements with BlackBerry 10 to providing the most flexibility with support for www.mobilityindia.com CMYK

third-party devices,” said, Khilnani of BlackBerry india. “BlackBerry has delivered that solution for the past 15 years and we will continue to deliver that solution to our valued customers for years to come. our focus is on building the most resilient platform in the industry that enables our customers to better protect their key assets. we engage with governments and enterprises around the world to understand the corporate needs as it relates to security and we actively work with the independent security research community to get insight into the state-of-the-art thinking around both attacking and protecting platforms. we support responsible disclosure to ensure that security vulnerabilities are patched in a timely manner,” he added further. “eScan range of security solutions for Android comprises of two editions; eScan Mobile Security for Android and eScan tablet Security for Android. these security solutions are tailor-made to fulfill the security needs of it users and ensure advanced protection from viruses, malware, trojans and other such cyber threats,” said, govind rammurthy, Ceo&Md, eScan. According to Pankaj Jain, director at eSet india, as per eSet’s 2014 Annual threat trends Predictions, three main areas of trends for 2014 are loss of privacy and mechanisms to improve protection on the internet – the trend of going to the cloud and how it effects privacy; the nSA and the privacy debate and how the user can protect his information on the internet (e.g. data encryption). Computer threats for Android oS - Already in its 2013 report, eSet has predicted major increase of Android malware. Comparing the detections that occurred in 2012 and 2013, the threats have increased by more than 60%. this significant increase continued in 2014. other trends are new spread of malicious code in form of ransomware (e.g. filecoders like Cryptolocker); vulnerabilities in Java, ever-present and more complex botnets. “nowadays, people are using several devices in their households, PCs, smartphones and tablets, that all have access to the internet. All of them are susceptible to a growing list of increasingly complex online threats. however, are all these devices need equal protection and hence multi-device protection concept is gaining popularity. we have Kaspersky internet Security – Multi-device, easy-to-use, one-license, multi-platform security solution that protects virtually any combination of PCs, Macs, Android smartphones and Android tablets,” pointed out Altaf halde, Md, Kaspersky lab--South Asia. “trend Micro is an industry leader in

A key part of an overall complete user protection strategy, trend Micro Mobile Security reduces complexity and costs compared to standalone mobile security and MdM solutions that require new management structures,” thakkar added further.

Best practice for data safety

Altaf halde, Md, Kaspersky lab--South Asia suggested some points regarding data safety. he said, “enable automatic updates in all applications you use daily. first of all, take care of your operating system, web browser, mail clients and instant messengers. Also keep in mind Pdf readers, flash player and Java. All should be done on a single occasion. it takes just three minutes, but it strengthens your PC’s protection against viruses and malware multifold. you wouldn’t start eating a meal without washing your hands – so why wouldn’t you apply the same habits to your PC? don’t use a ‘dirty computer.’ if it is your own machine, it has to have an up-to-date and reliable antivirus software installed. the more the better here – consider an end-to-end solution like internet Security. run a five-minute scan before typingin your passwords to your corporate email, online banking tool or social network sites. Checking your firewall sounds complicated, but it really isn’t. if you own a windows-based system, just go to your control panel and type ‘firewall’ in the search box. if your firewall is ‘on’ or ‘connected,’ then you’re good to go. if you own a Mac, click the Apple icon on your toolbar, go to ‘system preferences,’ then ‘security,’ then ‘firewall.’ Making sure you have a firewall in place

can go a long way toward keeping criminals out. Backing up your data protects you in the event of a computer crash or electrical outage or surge, like a lightning storm might produce. It also helps if you fall prey to the newer type of ransomware, which encrypts your sensitive data.” “Spotting a rogue website can be difficult, but there are a few things you can do to hone your skills. Look for a green lock in the address bar and the code prefix “https://” at the beginning of the URL while visiting banking sites, entering your credit card data or accessing your web mail. Be careful when shopping at a website that ships items from overseas, and don’t click on links sent to you in email messages, go directly to the website itself instead. No matter what website you’re on, be careful of the sensitive information you reveal. Although it’s pretty much common knowledge not to give out your social security number or credit card information unless you trust a website completely, you should be just as careful with your social media profiles as well. Never open an email from an unknown or suspicious source, and definitely never open any attachments contained in them. You have to be careful of emails coming from people on your contact list as well, especially if the sender’s account has been hacked. If an email from someone you regularly communicate with has a suspicious link and unusual content, delete it and immediately alert this person that his or her account may have been compromised,” added Halde. “The following tips can help users to keep their personal information safe and secure. Secure your device with strong password: As the first step to protection, it is essential for 28

mobility November 2014

users to set a password on their smartphones. The BlackBerry Password Keeper allows users to securely store passwords or banking PINs on their BlackBerry smartphone. User information is encrypted and protected by a single userdetermined password. Install tracking/ protection apps: There are various apps that allow users to track and remotely wipe data in case of device theft or loss. BlackBerry Protect app allows users to remotely lock, locate, and if necessary, wipe the data from their BlackBerry smartphone remotely (provided a network

connection is still available). The free application also allows users to take advantage of several features such as automatic backups of their contacts, calendar entries and more. Use File Encryption for your Media Card: Enabling file encryption ensures that user files stay unread should their media card fall into the wrong hands. Keep smartphone software updated: It is a good rule of thumb to keep apps updated to their latest versions,” said, Khilnani of Blackberry India. “With technology becoming a big part of how employees work, it makes no sense to segment mobile devices away from everything else. Instead, IT organizations should be adapting, integrating new technologies and operating the core company systems via control of these devices that employees bring in. Mobile devices left unchecked within a company can mean multiple security holes and chances for breaches or data leaks, but if there is a good system in place, businesses should be able to see cost savings and improvements in efficiency,” said, Thakkar of Trend Micro. Ritesh Chopra, Country Manager, India, Norton by Symantec, suggested that some best practices that consumers can keep in mind for their mobile devices are be careful when clicking on advertisements for free software. Many times these ads may direct you to a fake Android Market that hosts malicious versions of known applications. Avoid opening unsolicited text messages; attackers can use text messages to spread malware, phishing scams and other threats among mobile devices. Don’t click on links sent from unknown sources, this includes email, messaging, Facebook, Twitter and other Social websites. Be suspicious of applications

Mobile phones have become a point of danger for cyber crime, either by hacking mobile devices or simply accessing confidential information by stealing phones. Attacks can exploit weaknesses in text and data messaging services, wi-fi, Bluetooth and other mobile communications. there are also ways to exploit software vulnerabilities in web browsers and operating systems, sometimes caused by downloaded apps from third party sites that contain so-called ‘malware’ or ‘spyware.’ Many companies increasingly use ‘bring your own device’ and ‘corporately owned personally-enabled’ strategies, according to Bt, with 95% of uK organizations allowing employees to use their own phones for work purposes. this has heightened the risk of attack on mobile devices, which are often used for both work and personal purposes. executives at more than four-fifths of companies said there were insufficient resources in place to prevent a mobile security breach. mobility November 2014

“Comhard Technologies targeting Rs 100 crore for next year” “W

e started in 2000 as an IT distribution company and then added smartphones to our portfolio in Jan 2014. At present, nearly 50% of our revenues come from IT hardware and software and the remaining 50% come from mobiles. Earlier, our revenues from IT segment used to be Rs 7 crore per month but there was a steep drop during the last few years. Now our revenues from IT products shrank to Rs 3.5 crore/month, but we compensated the drop in IT products by selling smartphones Rs 3.5 crore per month. IT sales are expected to rise from now onwards with economy started looking upwards. Our IT portfolio includes Intex peripherals, TFTs, Microtek UPSs and Dell notebooks. Our smartphone portfolio includes Intex mobile phones, ASUS smartphones and tablets, and Gionee smartphones. Over 50% (nearly Rs 2 crore) of our mobile division’s revenues come from selling Intex brand products and the rest from Gionee and ASUS smartphones. We sell ASUS tablets, but tablet sales are dropping with smartphones with bigger screens started appearing.” Ravi Kant clarifies. With more than a decade of technology & industry experience, Comhard specializes in providing all major IT products & solutions under one roof. They have a strong team of energetic and talented individuals who are empowered to deliver complete satisfaction to their valued customers. Comhard’s mission is to provide value-added products to the end customers through their wellestablished channel network.

regions of operation and the supply channel Ravi Kant clarifies, “Our head office is in Laxmi Nagar, East Delhi, and we have 3 three branch offices in Delhi, one each in Nehru Place, Jankpuri and Wazirpur. At present, we are strongly positioned in East and North Delhi. We have just started in South Delhi and soon we will expand to West Delhi. We have no plans to go beyond Delhi since Delhi itself is a big market and we have a lot to explore and exploit here. We have over 1400 resellers of whom about 650 are for mobiles and nearly 750 for IT. We are steadily expanding our mobile division. We are launching a new product every 3 months. Nowadays it is essential that a distributor himself should have retail outlets. Right now we have our own retail outlet in Laxmi Nagar, East Delhi and soon we want to open one more. We also have one LG service center. As far as service is concerned, we 30

Challenges and mobiles market trends

Comhard Technologies Pvt Ltd, incepted in 2000, is a prominent Delhi-based distributor of information technology products-hardware & software and smartphones. In 2014, they forayed into distributing smartphones. In an interaction with Mobility Magazine, Ravi Kant Gupta, Director, Comhard, shares his views, his experiences in the trade and the mission and vision of their company. do not directly involve; we guide the customers to vendors’ service centers.” Comhard has taken a big leap in the past 3 years by branching into PCs, notebooks and

Regarding challenges and market trends, Ravi Kant reveals, “One major challenge we are facing is from online retailers who are upsetting the MOP by selling the products below market price, but we have to live with it; there is no way we can change this trend at present. Even vendors do not want to lose their share of sales they get from online retailers and so vendors want to push their products via both online and traditional channels. As far as current trends are concerned, feature phone sales are shrinking fast with smartphone prices falling. Now everyone wants to purchase only smartphones. Tablet market sales are dropping with the appearance largescreen smartphones. We distribute only ASUS tablets, but the demand is decreasing. “ In addition to the above mentioned products, Comhard also distributes desktop PCs, PC building blocks & upgrades, printers/scanners, antivirus, accounting Software – Tally.ERP9, storage devices/ optical drives, input devices (mouse, keyboard, etc), offline/ online UPS systems, multimedia speakers, projectors, etc

Expectations from vendors and future plans Regarding vendors support and future plans, Ravi Kant concludes, “Vendors should give more ads so that it will create sales pull for the dealers and distributors. Gionee and Intex are giving regular TV and newspaper ads. Vendors should also give more support to dealers through inshop branding, newspaper ads in the dealers name, attractive incentive schemes for dealers, etc because at the end of the chain, it is the dealers who supply products to the end users and generate business. Regarding future plans, in 2015, we want to achieve a sales target of Rs 100 from our mobile phones segment. We also want to open more of our own retail outlets.” www.mobilityindia.com CMYK

Save Money

&

Protect the Environment Saving energy means decreasing the amount of energy you use while achieving a similar outcome of end use. Using less energy has lots of benefits – you can save money and help to protect the environment. Generating energy requires precious natural resources, for instance coal, oil or gas. Therefore, using less energy helps us to preserve these resources and make them last longer in the future. Why is it important to save energy? If people use less energy, there is less pressure to increase the available supply of energy, for example by constructing new power plants or by importing energy from a different country.

What to do to save energy? l There are many sources that give you ideas of what you can do to save energy. Here are a few ideas to get you started: l Change your travel behavior, think more in terms of public transportation, if possible, walk or ride your bicycle instead of taking the car l Reduce your house heat by 1C, keep the windows open while heating, dress in way you need less fan usage l Choose products that come with lightweight packaging

www.mobilityindia.com

l Turn off lights and appliances when you are not using them, use energy-saving light bulbs l Reuse plastic bags for shopping and storage l Use a microwave instead of a stove to reheat food l Use rechargeable batteries instead of disposable batteries l An average home has about 5-10 appliances constantly sucking power.

How to manage energy consuming products and minimize energy wastage? Plasma TVs: Plasma TVs can suck up over 1400 kWh annually. The simplest way to save energy with your TV is to unplug it when you leave the house. LCD screens still consume energy too, though substantially less. Game consoles: PlayStation, Xbox and Wii can consume around 230 kWh a year! If you don't want to unplug your box, appliances often have a second ‘off’ switch hidden on the back. The first off-switch puts the device into standby mode-that's why there's still a little green light on--but when you press the other off-switch, it actually kills the power. Laptops: Your laptop is another energysucking culprit. While you may love charging it while you're gone all day, it's far more energy conscious to unplug it and wait until you get home to charge the battery. Even if your laptop is fully charged, if it's plugged into the wall, it's still using energy.

Cell Phone chargers: The amount of energy sucked out by cell phone chargers while not plugged into your phone isn't huge on its own, but add that to your DVD player, laptop, TV and video game console, and it's a lot of vampire energy down the drain. Cell phone chargers are the easiest items to unplug--they're useless without your phone! In our daily life, we rely on many materials. Wood, metal, glass and plastics all have environmental consequences. More consumption of energy also means more erosion of the environment. Think about the impact of every product you use. Also, the lighter an object, the lesser the fuel required to transport it. A heavy suitcase on the boot of a car will require the car to consume more fuel during its journey. The same goes for all products and their packaging.

A Right Startup that achieved a landmark figure in e- commerce space Unicommerce is an e-commerce management software & fulfillment solutions company in India operating on B2B and B2C models. Established in 2012 by three friends Ankit Pruthi, Karun Singla and Vibhu Garg and later joined by Manish Gupta, the venture serves the e-Commerce industry by solving their hassles of payment, logistics, warehousing and order management.

A

nkit Pruthi, Co-founder & CEO, Unicommerce shared with us that how they have achieved this success after initial challenges. Unicommerce created

a product using which an Online Seller can sell on Multiple Marketplaces like Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon, etc. Because of this the seller does not have to divide his inventory at 10 diff places while

selling online. He can expose his entire inventory at every place. This leads to huge improvement in inventory utilization and thus impacts the costs positively.

Building such a product was a great technical challenge. Because tying

together

50-60

different

marketplaces, understanding their technology, making them work together in tandem - was a tough challenge. And doing this reliably to give a seamless experience to the online seller requires a great product team. Unicommerce has successfully delivered a stable and feature rich product which is solving major pain points of online sellers. 36

“We provide space for sellers to set up their online shops”

skme, the flagship product from Getit Infomedia, is a one stop destination to find information related to multitudinous number of brands, products, services and more be it restaurants, travel, matrimony, jobs, education, mobile, gadgets, etc. They cater to the requirements of enquirers, searchers, buyers, etc through mobile, Internet and voice. Askme has an extensive directory of information that covers the sellers and providers spread across India that is both accurate as well as diverse. Launched in June 2011, is available 24X7 for consumers across all major cities in India. They have a unique number through which users can reach / call them 4444 4444 44 (10 times 4) for information on companies, products and services. Askme Voice service works to ensure that the customer gets real-time and accurate information. Ashish, Head of Technology, askmeBazaar. com, in an interaction with Mobility magazine, shares askme Bazaar’s mission, plans and goals.

What is AskmeBazzar? AskmeBazaar ‘Online Shopping Indian Style’ is an effort to recreate the great Indian shopping experience online. Defined by its simple, easy-touse buying process with basic Indian features, we are a bazaar with many stores from across India. Buyers can see products from multiple stores and buy their choice of product with great value offers from the store of their choice. Indian brands, unbranded goods, local specialties, special festival offers, bargain before you buy, pay as you please and share what you want to buy with your social circle are some of the key Indian features. Askme Bazaar guarantees every purchase with its unique getit trust seal and allows user ratings on every seller and their products. We are India's premier online bazaar where sellers from across India can open their online store and display all their products for free. With zero upfront investment, the seller can now sell their products online by just paying fixed fees for processing every transaction on the platform.

How it all started? We are owned by Getit Infomedia. We started initially with information services, 35 years back. DNA of our company has been we understand SME, we understand sellers. About 12 years back we started this digital directory sort of thing. Now we are online. Online being a new medium, today still less than 3% of the retailing of consumer durables takes place online, the rest is happening offline. We are like a bazaar rather than a supermarket. What a bazaar does is it gives a place or platform for different sellers to set up their shops. To setup e-commerce site, you need to know how payment is handled and how the logistics are managed. For example, a seller is in Jaipur and the buyer is in Pune. Once an online order is placed, someone has to pick up the stuff from Jaipur and deliver it

to Pune and complete the financial transaction. What we are doing is we are taking care of all the distribution and logistics. We have our own partners. We have offices in many cities across the country. We have retail distributors for different regions. Using this infrastructure, we manage the inventories of different e-commerce vendors. These offices and retail distributors manage all the supply and transaction-related activities. Earlier promotion used to take place through ads in TVs, newspapers, etc. The sellers need a promotion engine that is compatible with e-commerce. We recommend the vendors the right methods for different products and different areas. Finally, it would be for the sellers to choose the methods. Promotion and infrastructures make 80% of the total cost.

How much you are charging to your seller for your services? We are charging a fee of Rs 100 for a successful transaction. We do not charge if the products are returned. Sellers in our bazaar, by definition, include vendors as well as resellers— anybody who wants to sell via our site. Whenever a buyer places an order, we will inform the seller about the order. Then our guy will go and pick up the product and then it is routed through our distribution network to the buyer. In different regions, we have local retail distributors (RDs).

How many sellers are using your platform? Currently we have 15,000 sellers on our site and most of them are happy with our services. Most of the products that are routed through our portal are non-perishable physical products. Our marketing person will approach the sellers and ask if they want to sell through our portal. If they say yes, then we evaluate the seller and his products and sign up the deal if it is feasible.

What’s your take on future of ecommerce in Indian and what are your future plans? Nowadays ecommerce is on the growth path with most companies starting educating their personnel on ecommerce. Our goal is to add 20,000 sellers next year. Ecommerce will become more popular in future due to its convenience.
