Wearables can play great role in ecosystem Wearables

could

(eventually)

be

a relevant part of the mobile campus ecosystem. Assuming wearable devices can be designed to work seamlessly with other technologies, they could play an important role in campus life. Appropriately designed, inexpensive and lightweight wearables could be path-breaking devices for educational, medical, home automation, sports and many more. The closer the connection becomes between wearables and smartphones/ tablets, the greater the potential impact. This could add a new dimension to place-based augmented reality / simulations without the need for constantly ‘hold’ a device.

mobility October 2014

Future Multi-Functional Smartphones Technology is always moving forward, and when it comes to smartphones, sometimes the pace of improvement can be incredible. The smartphone of the future will be a device that stays in your pocket acting as a server for your wearable devices, be it a watch, glasses, a heart rate monitor, other health-related sensor or even a chip in your brain. These wearable devices will become like personal assistants, anticipating your every need, but they will be powered by your smartphone. This solves the big issue with wearable technology right now - the challenge of meeting the power requirements of these small devices without sacrificing battery life and affordability. By offloading the processing and connectivity issues to the smartphone, the wearable device can be small and inexpensive.

Wearable technology is forecasted to make a big impact over the next few years. As that technology evolves so will our smartphones. The battle of the smartphones will no longer be about the size and resolution of the screen but the way your watch, glasses or other devices communicate with it. While we can't predict everything that will come, perhaps the best way to get a glimpse into the future of mobile technology is to watch and read science fiction.

Things to know while changing your smartphones Important tips and precautions regarding mobile phones, chargers and batteries

N

o one expects cell phones and their batteries become the reasons for accidents. But we often hear about incidents like someone’s mobile blasted in his pocket causing serious injuries to him; someone killed in mobile blast while talking on phone or while charging; a housewife unexpectedly lost her life while putting the cell phone chargers in socket; and so on. We can avoid such incidents if we take care of a few things regarding mobile phones, chargers and batteries. These days you can buy a mobile phone from a store near your area starting from as low as Rs 300 and a smart phone for Rs 500. Thanks to increasing availability of China made cheap mobiles and batteries and consequently accident rates are increasing. Many incidents occurred with these devices, so beware.

# Cell phones batteries (lithium ion) are more powerful than torchlight batteries and remote control (Alcoleen AA, AAA) batteries, so don’t play with these batteries. Don’t touch battery charging points with ornaments.

# Don’t put your cell phones at high temperature places like stoves, heaters, etc.

# First thing, purchase only recognized branded mobiles.

# Don’t put immediately on charging when your phone accidentally drops in water or is wet when are drenched in rain. First let it dry, but don’t dry it exposing direct sun rays. If it is still wet, go to recognized service centers and they will clean and dry the phone with chemicals. # Don’t leave the phone on charger for long time even after the phone is charged. It decreases your cell phone battery’s life. Also overcharging lead to wastage of power. Sometimes overheat can lead to blast. # Scrap the battery if the phone battery size abnormally increases. Reason for this is overcharging. Overcharging changes lithium ion batteries cathodes. Cobalt oxide forms in cathodes and hence increasing its size.

# Always purchase original batteries for your mobile. Don’t purchase duplicate batteries which are available at low cost. No manufacturing precautions will be

taken for duplicate batteries. So it may lead to dangerous situations.

Bose SoundLink Color Quality with affordability

B

ose introduced the latest SoundLink model of portable Bluetooth speaker in India with a complete new design. Targeting the youth, Bose introduced SoundLink color with more playful design and an array of palettes. The SoundLink Color Bluetooth speaker is a completely new SoundLink design -- but is still every inch a SoundLink. Features: It weighs just 0.5 kg, and measures 12.7 cms wide, 5.3 cms deep and 13.4 cms high to fit easily into a handbag, knapsack or the palm of your hand. Bose combined exclusive dual-opposing passive radiators with two high-efficiency transducers for full-range sound, including deep, low-note performance. Bose keeps all the controls like the pause/play button on top and there are volume controls but no speakerphone capabilities. And for added versatility, a 3.5mm stereo auxiliary input is integrated on the back of the enclosure. It connects wirelessly to a smartphone, tablet or other Bluetooth enabled device, and uses voice prompts -- available in several languages to simplify setup, and identify which source is connected. Using a lithium-ion battery it recharges with most USB power sources in as little as 3 hours. The exterior tested housing is made of elastomer and plastic and comes in Black, White, Blue, Red and Mint. Performance: The SoundLink Color Bluetooth speaker is very easy-to-use, pretty decent and compact Bluetooth speaker. We had no problem pairing it and re-pairing with our devices. Lookwise it fits very nice in any kind of ambiance; after pairing the speaker remembers the last eight devices you've paired it with and has artificial voice prompts for assist. Like the more expensive SoundLink Mini, the speaker plays a lot louder than you think it would for its small size, with a reasonable amount of bass. What we are disappointed with is its Bluetooth range. You have to keep your device always close to the speaker, otherwise you might witness sound drops. We played different genres from our playlist and it gives us the quality of sound that we expect from a Bose product, not at all disappointed us. All-n-all for its speaker class, it performs quite well and also plays loudly without distorting. Impressed with the sound it puts out, particularly in smaller rooms. Unlike the older Bose -- which requires a proprietary AC adapter -- this newer model charges via a standard micro-USB cable (it takes about 3 hours to fully charge). That's

much more convenient for traveling, especially if you have an Android phone. And gets you up to 8 hours of battery life, which is pretty decent for a very compact Bluetooth speaker. Verdict: If you are looking for affordable Bose speaker then SoundLink Color is for you. Price: Rs 11,138/Pros: Compact, many color options, easy to carry sound quality Cons: Bluetooth reception, design might not go well for some.

LG G3 An elite smartphone worth considering

T

he LG G3 is the 2014 successor to the popular LG G2 flagship device. There are a lot of excellent options this year when it comes to choosing a new smartphone, especially now that most the major manufacturers have unveiled their flagship devices for 2014, there is very little to choose between top range Android phones these days. They almost all pack Qualcomm’s latest system on a chip and it is no surprise that the LG G3 follows suit.

Mobility Ratings

LG G3 gives a stiff competition to Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8.

Performance

Overall

Features:

The G3 retains styling elements of the G2, but improves on internal hardware and screen size. LG's G3 goes bold with a new high-resolution QHD display, as well as adding a laser-guided autofocus for the camera. The display is a 5.5" QHD IPS LCD with a resolution of 1440x2560. The device is powered by a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, and 2GB or 3GB of RAM depending on the model. Internal storage is available in either 16GB or 32GB. The 13-megapixel camera is located right above the rear buttons and on the left is the laser autofocus feature, which uses an infrared laser beam to measure the distance between the camera and the intended subject of your picture. On the right is the dualLED flash. Located above the display is a 2.1megapixel camera for taking selfies. The 3.5mm audio jack is located at the bottom of the phone, next to the Micro-USB jack. The exterior features a scratch-resistant metallic polycarbonate finish. All this is backed up by a 3000mAh battery. LG G3 is just 149g, that does make it 4g heavier than the Galaxy S5, but it is more than 10g lighter than the HTC One M8 or Sony Xperia Z2. Its height and thickness are almost identical to the HTC One M8, although it is half a centimeter wider (dimensions: 146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9 mm).

Performance:

The first thing that you notice about the G3 is the screen. LG has dropped the 5.2-inch HD display of the G3’s predecessor in favor of a

16

5.5-inch, quad-HD screen (that’s four times the pixels of a 720p display – or 2,560x1440 that's easily superior to iPhone 5s the S5 and One M8. The screen looks especially sharp showing LG’s pastel-colored and restrained take on the Android operating system but where the company has really excelled is in minimizing the bezels - making the handset feel simultaneously larger and more usable than its rivals. The LG G3 has solid call quality and LTE data speeds, a great camera, a brilliantly sharp display, a snappy quadcore processor, and a flat UI that makes Android 4.4 look good. LG's flagship has also improved on the previous model -- the new G3 comes with a removable battery and microSD card slot, both things the G2 lacked. The only drawbacks that we found in this is the new QHD display with its 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution is quite a power hog, so the phone will barely last you a day without a charge. And also the speakers possess neither the volume nor the depth of other phones in its category – audio is weak and thin. However, the LG G3 does come bundled with some reasonable earphones. These offer much better sound quality and noise isolation.

Price:

Rs 37,939

Pros:

Great screen, good camera,

Cons:

Battery life and speakers

Verdict:

With unique features like QHD display, camera with OIS+, laser auto-focus LG G3 gives a stiff competition to Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8.

A pioneer in technology, Intex has PAN-India presence through its wide network comprising 30 stock and sales offices and over 800+ service touch-points. The company is known for its consistent policy of transparent, fair and ethical trade practices. Intex is one of the most successful Indian brands. Intex, which has been manufacturing their products In China, now started their own factory in India to manufacture feature phones and smartphones. In an interaction with Mobility magazine, Sanjay Kalirona, sr. GM - IntexMobile Business, shares mission, vision, plans and goals of Intex in India. Sanjay says, “Intex was founded in 1996 with the vision of providing products that will make the life of people easy and productive. Initially we started with one product, Ethernet card. Now we have more than 100 products. In the beginning years, Intex started providing IT accessories suc as keyboard, mouse, speaker, headphone, cabinet, etc. Today, we are No. 1 in speaker segment, selling the highest number of speakers. In mobile segment, we started in 2007 initially with mobile feature phones. At that time, most brands in India were MNC brands. First differentiation we made was we started with dual SIM, whereas most other brands were with single SIM. In 2008, we came up with phones with long battery life as a differentiating point. With regular differentiations, we started grabbing the market share and attention of the customer. In 2012, we started providing smartphones of 3.2-inch display at Rs 4000. Later we added several models and today we have 18 models in our basket. Our smartphones are now available from Rs 2000 to Rs 12,000 at 5 to 6 price ranges, like Rs 2000-4000, 4000-6000, and so on.” Providing products with differentiated and unique features keepsIntex ahead of its rivals With decades of experience in innovation, supported byan invaluable asset of more than 2000 employee-force, Intex Technologies has established itself as a trusted brand in the industry today. These facilities ensure that products are offered in line with the latest global standards.Intex's manufacturing domain comprises factories in India and China manufacturing diverse products.

months. Also we are planning to manufacture a basic model of smartphone, to start with. In India, we are among the top 10 brands taking into account all the brands, Indian and MNC; and taking only Indian brands into account, we are among the top 4. Currently we are selling 15 lac handsets a month, and among them 11 lac are features phones and 4 lac smartphones. People are fast shifting towards smartphones, but feature phone base is still there. Right now we sell nearly 70% feature phones and 30% smartphones. In a few months time this may become 50% and 50%.”

Sanjay asserts, “Our focus is always on how to offer value-for-money and the best benefits to the customer. For example, if someone purchases a phone for Rs 10,000, we examine and evaluate how we can give the best features, quality and service for that price. Basing on that, we identify the specifications and prepare the design. We have two R&D teams—one based in Delhi and the other in Shenzen, China. In China, we also have a separate design team in addition to R&D team. A total of 100 engineers and other experts work in our R&D and design teams. We have tied up with 3 OEMs to design hardware, software and components and to manufacture them. Design and specifications are provided by us and we have total control ofproduction. In India, we recently started a factory inBaddi, Himachal Pradesh, where we are manufacturing feature phones with brand name Alfa. We have already started marketing these phones. At present, the production rate is only 20,000 per month. Our plan is to increase it to 100,000 in the coming

"It is all about brand perception! We at Intex endeavor to create a brand image that people can flaunt about" Keshav Bansal Director-Marketing Sanjay explains, “We are planning a new smartphone with Android 1. Smart watch is also one of the options we are examining. We are very quick in following the latestmarket trends and launching new innovations at the right times. We take quick decisions while selecting a new product and then designing, developing and launching that product. Being a North-Indian company, we have been strong in North-India and West-India, but our presence has been limited in SouthIndia. We have strong competitors in the South, one based in Bangalore and the other based in Hyderabad. We tried everything to get a break in the South, but that did not work. Then we thought that we should try something different—let us try regional brand ambassadors and make them our face there and then proceed further. So we chose Sudeep, a Kannada actor, for Karnataka; and Anushka, an actress (who acts in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films), for Andhra and Tamil Nadu as brand ambassadors. It worked amazinglywell and we gotthe break in the South and now we are doing well there. East has not been a problem for us. We have strong presence in Jarkhand and other areas in the East. Northeast had been a challenge for us earlier, but later we started doing well there too.” Lack of favorable conditions andL government support discourages Indian manufacturers Nowadays everything is manufactured in China and imported to India. This in fact adds up to transportation costs, import duties, and then, the worst thing, flight of money to China from India, which goes into manufacturing costs including salaries to the personnel. Despite all that providers prefer China as a manufacturing place. In spite of the fact India boasts of a large pool of English-speaking technocrats and low labor costs compared to China, we are unable to manufacture goods in India. The problem is lack of right facilities & infrastructure in India and lack of will on the government’s side where government policies are often discouraging to the domestic manufacturers. With regard to manufacturing in India, Sanjay clarifies, “One major problem in India is nonavailability of the components; whether it is PCB, chipset or battery; for everything we have to look towards China. What government should do is they should make components available in India by encouraging local manufacturing with favorable policies. Already three or four chipset manufacturing units have been approved by the authorities, but they have not yet started manufacturing. Once that starts, gradually other components also should be manufactured in India. Once we can get at least 30-40% of the components in India, we can provide India-made devices. At present, only India-made components that are available are batteries, chargers and earphones which constitute 15-20% of the needed components. We have to import rest of the key components from China and assemble them here. In China, government policies, working conditions, infrastructure setup and facilities are www.mobilityindia.com

very favorable and encouraging. For example, when we started manufacturing speaker in India, we were into losses for 3 years. Then we increased volumes and slowly improved profits. We want to manufacture at least 50% our handsets in India in future. If we manufacture all the necessary components in India, we can have better control over quality and design. Even if something goes off track, we can get into line quickly and easily. The recent budget abolished tax on importing certain components which are not available in India. That is a good move. Though Indian brands could not manufacture successfully in India so far and are getting them manufactured in China, now Indian brands have stabilized and there is hardly any difference in quality and reliability between the Indian brands and MNC brands. Now Indian brands are able to control and monitor their R&D, design, manufacturing, etc as good as MNC brands, though all process takes place in China. Initially when we started manufacturing and assembling in India, we had many challenges, but over a period when things stabilized, we were able to control R&D, quality and manufacturing.” Online retailing is a threat to some but an opportunity to those who know how to manage it sensibly There is a general complaint from the traditional distributors and retailers that online retailers such as Flipkart, Snapdeal, eBay, etcare offering the same products at much cheaper prices, compared to the traditional channel, and are upsetting the MOP, posing a threat to the traditional sellers. Nowadays thisprice differences between e-commerce sites and traditional channels have become a big issue. In this regard, Sanjay opines, “Nowadays all Chinese brands are launching online at very competitive prices. 6 months back, online sales were only 3% now they have increased to 8-10% in general in India so we too want our nearly 10% sales should come from online sales. Recently we have launched some of our brands on Flipkart, eBay and Snapdeal.Initially we are launching only a few exclusive models via ecommerce sites so that we can have better control over them.Since we do not launch the same models online and on traditional channel, for us the price differential is not an issue and we control MOPs well. But in case we launch some model online and offline simultaneously, we will ensure that they will not breach the MOP of the traditional channel. Online is a great opportunity without any doubt. Next, online is an easy way to launch new products, whereas launching via traditional channel involves many complexities. Online sales will continue to grow in future. Right now online retailers are working with low taxes compared to traditional channel, but let us see what the government will do in the coming months.Yes, there has been panic among traditional distributors, retailers and LFRs (Large Format Retailers), but these online sales usually stabilize at 15-20% and do not grow beyond that, I think. Next online sellers are working on very less margins and this will also be a deciding factor in future how they can sustain on such low margins. AccordingSanjay to me,Kalirona, traditional channel Sr. GM has its own confidence level and will remain there with a big share. Future will tell how things will shape up. People have higher confidence in traditional channel because they directly interact with the sellers, whereas online sellers and buyers interact remotely. Buyer is often doubtful about the online sites when he thinks about service.” All other things being same, a better service provider has edge in the competition In a tough competitive market while

competing with MNCs and big players, with all other things being same, service quality will decide the winners and losers. Related to their service policy, Sanjay comments, “Service has been our strong point since beginning—we give the best and quick service to the end users. Topclass service and unique features have always been our strong selling points that kept us ahead of our competitors. We have good control over our service network; we have our own TRCs, call centers, managers, technicians, etc. We have nearly 70 TRCs and about 700 ICTs. TRCs are our own, but ICTs are third-party. All in all, we have close to 800 service points pan-India.” Along with good products, fitting accessories are essential to win the customers Smartphone accessories segment is a fast growing market in India. According to Sanjay, “Mobile phone accessories are an attractive market today. For accessories, we launched a separate vertical that functions in coordination with other verticials. We are providing battery, charger and cover. Whenever we launch new models, we are now separately providing accessories. We have started manufacturing batteries for all our models in our factory in India. Now even chargers and flipcovers are also available. In the next 3 months, we are coming up with more powerful batteries, 3000 mAh and above, so that people can continuously operate their smartphones for a longer time.” Due to their invaluable support, Intex has been able to build a high credibility amongst several million satisfied end users. Based on transparent, fair and ethical dealings, Intex has a simple channel strategy - how to increase sales in every market and at the same time ensure that all channel partners make money and work in harmony.

Intex has a simple channel strategy how to increase sales in every market and at the same time ensure that all channel partners make money and work in harmony. Regarding future plans,Sanjay concludes,“Now our penetration and reach have increased a lot. Out of 612 districts in the country, we are present in over 550 districts. After 2 years, we want to be among the top 3 brands in India. In the coming months, we want to sell 20 lac handsets including feature and smart phones (as I mentioned,at present, we sell 15 lacs per month). We want to increase the share of smartphone sales and not expecting a big increase in feature phone sales. We want to increase smartphone sales to 8-10 lacs per month.Earlier we were into tablets but later we kept that vertical on hold completely six months back, because there were lots of cheap brands available, margins were low and the market was messy. Since the markets have stabilized now, we again plan to comeback into tablet market. Already we have 18 models for smartphones, as I said, and now we are launching 6 new models every quarter. In feature phone segment, we have 25 models starting from Rs 800 to Rs 2500.Initially we had one experience zone namedIntexSquare in North India, but we kept it on hold due to some reasons and now we want to open IntexSquares pan-India again by the end of this financial year.”

ndustry experts predict that the mobiles of the future will become remote controls and ultimate multifunctional devices that will dominate most of our daily activities— both professional and personal. The technology involved in mobile phones and mobile communications has been developing so rapidly over the last few years that the possibilities for the future seem limitless. The mobile industry is moving at such a fast space, it is often hard to keep up with the new innovations. Let us sift through some of the big, predicted future trends coming to smartphones within the next two or three years. With every major mobile phone release, users are treated with an ever-expanding list of advanced features. Some are more useful than others, but they all represent an industry that is always on the move and always changing. The next big feature to make our lives easier is usually only an upgrade away but we have decided to gaze a little further into the future. Features are getting more in number and sophistication, and prices are coming down, making them more and more affordable to a common man, as never before. “Consumers are looking at an evolved mobility experience from a smartphone which not only gives them the ease to communicate while on the go but enable them to become more productive at the same time. Right from completing everyday tasks like reading and writing to watching movies and searching the web, smartphone users are now opting for mobile devices that have a wider screens, quality views and higher speeds,” according to Ashish Gupta, Director--Carrier Sales, BlackBerry India.

Advance Designs and Better Features Smartphone adoption in India has seen a rapid increase over last four years and smartphones are increasing becoming inseparable gadgets in people’s lives. In today’s world, smartphones are becoming one-stopsolutions for communications, entertainment, capturing moments and connecting with what is happening around the world. Sachin Devsare, Executive Director, Karbonn Mobiles, envisions, “In future, we may find more 4k ultra HD TV coming on smartphone displays. 3D on smart phone has flopped because one has to wear 3D glasses which nobody likes. People want to see sharper, brighter and clearer picture and that desire is never going to end so high resolution and powerful displays are going to appear.” Internet penetration in India has also pushed the adoption to a new level. Companies like LG believe in being in direct interaction with customers to know what features and designs they want and what gives them the best comfort and experience. Amit Gujral, Marketing Head, LG Mobiles, clarifies,“If you look at LG’s mobile portfolio, you can see that we try and incorporate smart, interactive and intuitive features in all our products. The idea is to keep things easy for the consumer when he uses an LG Smartphone. In addition, here at LG, we treat the feedback from consumers as the most vital information for designing the smart device and adding new features. We first ask the consumer what he wants, and then test and incorporate those solutions into our products. To give an example, LG realized while studying users, that as phones got larger, it was getting more difficult t o properly access s i d e

keys and hence we introduced the rear key on our products. We introduced the camera with OIS technology to prevent blurring. Apart from this, LG brought in three core UX features, the Smart Keyboard, Smart Notice and Smart Security. The Smart Keyboard functions on adaptive technology that learns as you type for faster input and reduced errors. The height of the keyboard can be adjusted and individual keys can be customized with frequently used symbols. Smart Notice is a personal assistant that offers suggestions and recommendations

Transparency in smart phone designs, may vary from partial transparency to full based on user behavior, phone usage patterns and location-based information. To secure confidential data, Smart Security like the Knock Code was developed by LG that unlocks the device with the help of a knocking pattern, a personalized code set by the user that can be entered anywhere on screen. With G3, LG became the pioneer in gesture selfies. Simply clench the fist into a gesture that the phone will recognize, and an automatic countdown timer will launch, snapping your self-portraits in seconds. All these features were introduced keeping in mind the consumer. In future too, our innovations would be around consumers’ needs and all our R&D is about making life easy for our consumers. For LG, ‘customer is the right teacher and guide’.” Indian market is currently witnessing an ever changing technology influx from various brands across the globe. From dual core to quad core, VGA to 41 MP much has changed within a short span of time. And this trend is set to continue. Enhanced and powerful battery technology is definitely going to be a feature smartphone players will work on while keeping the smartphone as thin and light as possible. Cameras are becoming more and more powerful. Arvind Vohra, India Head, Gionee Smartphones, states, “Increasing focus on style

In the future there will be more focus on a unified form of communication where the user can access to daily utility icons and application with just a simple touch gesture or the click of a button

quotient especially in terms of slimness will be a key factor. Gionee has already created new benchmarks by first launching slim S5.5 and now beating its own record by announcing the arrival of S5.1 which has been acclaimed by Gunnies Book of World Records as World’s Slimmest Smartphone. Clicking selfies has become a trend nowadays and a rotating camera is going to be ideal for all selfie lovers. Gionee Elife E7 Mini also has a 13 megapixel rotating camera that was a big hit with the youngsters and allowing them to take selfies from any angle. Camera that actually matches up to a professional range or surpass them will be the next attempt. Smartphones are getting more powerful and feature rich day by day. Battery life is always a crucial component in any smartphone. In future gaming is expected to take user experience to a higher level combining all the best hardware and software features on a device. Some of the key features that will change the gaming will include better UI ecosystem, Optimization, Extended battery life, Style quotient and camera as well as a professional camera.” From features perspective smartphones have

taken innovation to the next level where we are witnessing them to work as ‘helpers’ in the form of a ‘digital assistant’ which are now available on most of the smartphone operating systems ranging from BlackBerry OS, iOS and Windows. With advent of technology, not only the software has improved but the hardware too especially, the camera which has seen a drastic shift in quality both terms of camera resolution and image quality. All this added to the rising trend of taking ‘selfies’. Seeing the high adoption of smartphones with a clear focus on the quality of cameras, smartphone makers are now introducing front high resolution cameras which are now available on low end as well as flagship smartphones. Ashish Gupta of BlackBerry adds, “Recently launched BlackBerry Passport encapsulates many desired features and caters to the ‘power professional’ in the most efficient and productive manner. The device is an amalgamation of new design innovation with its unique square form factor and is the first of its kind. It is packed with a long lasting battery with an updated OS (BlackBerry 10.3) and offers a seamless user experience while on the go. Its touch QWERTY keypad makes the device more functional. In the future we see further advancements in smartphone technology. All these innovations should be well aligned to the consumer requirements so that users get the best experience.” According to Jerold Pereira, CEO, Videocon Mobiles, referring to LTPS Screen of (Infinium Graphite), their focus is more on brighter displays with accurate color reproduction and lower power consumption and since curved screens have not worked, new technology that is awaited is bendable displays. He further believes that software is going to be a big player in defining features in future. “The advent of MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical systems) cameras to replace the conventional VCM (Voice Coil Motor) enabling you to make slimmer devices & faster focus times. Moving forward there is a new technology called Array cameras under development which will render the entire concept of Auto Focus cameras completely redundant. The height of array camera is only 3mm with no moving parts,” adds Jerold Pereira. Smartphones will wirelessly control the communication between various devices including home devices, according to Praveen Valecha, Regional Director – APAC BU India, Alcatel Mobile. Much higher

resolution cameras with smarter integrated apps on how to enhance while taking the pictures will come up. According to Amit Gujral of LG, the Camera on Smartphones should not be seen as just a snapper to click photographs. The key focus of all manufacturers would be to improve the quality and capabilities of a smartphone camera to shoot DSLR-standard pictures. Hence, one can expect a lot of innovations happening in this space in future! Amit Gujral further adds, “With G3, LG is already offering a very powerful front camera which is excellent at taking selfies. The G3’s 2.1 MP front camera incorporates new enhancements like a larger image sensor and larger aperture for more light input and better selfies. Apart from the 2.1 megapixel front facing lens, the G3 also boasts gesture controls to allow for perfect selfies. The G3’s 13MP OIS+ Camera captures stunning imagery, acquired through the use of its Laser Auto Focus, a first of its kind feature in any smartphone till date. This feature measures the distance between the camera and the subject using a laser beam to capture images. This simplified image capturing process utilizes the tap of a finger to bring the subject into focus, simultaneously triggering the shutter.”

Smartphones as Future Multifunctional Devices With all of the great technology available, it’s no surprise that people are upgrading to the newest smartphones on the market. A recent survey spotted some interesting trends among smartphone users. The new breed phones are more like tiny laptops; people prefer using their smartphones to their computers. In a survey, 70% of smartphone users preferred using their phone to access the Internet to using their computers. People are relying on phones far more for standard features like calling, texting and e-mailing. Approximately 53% of the survey’s respondents said that they

used all their smartphone functions sometime or the other. That percentage dwarfs the other 17% who admitted to only using only the basic essential functions. The consumption of content via web browsing on smartphone has been increasing. Additionally, the innovations in technology have helped in using smartphones and desktops in sync with one another. As we progress towards a connected and ‘smart’ lifestyle, it is becoming extremely important to have access to multiple devices so that content is readily available on a different screen, if one screen is not sufficient. Although, smartphones today are proving to be productive tools while on the move, consumption of content on several different screens including smartphones, laptop, tablet and desktop is an option that is now available to the consumer, which was not there earlier. This feature is going to improve further to give the users a better experience. As processor manufacturers continue developing smaller, less power hungry and increasingly powerful smartphones, users are shifting more and more of their activities to smartphones away from the traditional desktop computers making later less and less desired. “Keeping the present trends in mind, BlackBerry has made various feature enhancements on smartphones which work extremely well with desktops, laptops and tablets. BlackBerry has the innovative BlackBerry Blend feature on BlackBerry OS 10.3 based devices which offers instant view of notifications, text messages, personal e-mail and access to contacts and media on a real-time basis on Blackberrypowered computers and tablets. BlackBerry Blend works on desktop operating systems including Mac OS X 10.7 +, Windows 7+ and Android tablets running Android 4.4+ via cellular, USB or Wi-Fi connection. In addition to that, the Miracast Technology on the BlackBerry OS 10.2 works as a second screen and enables the consumer to create their own ‘Gadget’ ecosystem using their BlackBerry devices,” says Ashish Gupta of BlackBerry. It is an experienced fact that PC shipments

www.mobilityindia.com

are falling because users are now shifting to tablets and smartphones. Using the internet on the go is on the rise. “Smartphones may not be able to literally replace laptops and desktops, but definitely more and more integration going on and expected to increase further in future. Desktops and laptops will be used only for limited and more cumbersome works like office, professional jobs and heavy works at home. All simple and routine works will shift smartphones,” believes Praveen Valecha of Alcatel. “Holographic projection, laser projection are still design concepts. The introduction of MHL allows a mobile device to be adapted as a computing device. However huge improvements within the operating systems are required before mobile phones can replace conventional desktops/laptops. Another limiting factor is the heat generated by typical computing cores,” clarifies Jerold Pereira of Videocon. According to a CISCO report, data consumption is going to jump 200% in the next 3 years. Within this data consumption pie, video consumption is going to be a major share. You need higher processing capabilities for that. More advanced processor architectures will be needed. Sachin Devsare of Karbonn foresees, “An important factor for future is transferability and Internet of Things. Now we are looking for smartphones that can talk to our TV, computer, home appliances, etc. Data consumption is going to skyrocket in India in the coming years. To deal with enormous amounts of data consumed in future we need more advance processors. In a nutshell, future smartphones need to do more things, more

Mr. Jerold Pereira, CEO, Videocon Mobiles

Wearable technology will interface with mobile device to constantly monitor critical parameters such as Control cameras, fingerprint sensors, voice recognition, Blood pressure sensor etc things simultaneously and more things faster with superior quality. Karbonn’s 4G devices are in the pipeline. We are also launching 2G and LTE combination; and 3G and LTE combination. Multimode PCDAs are also in our consideration. Cloud usage will gain momentum by next year.”

Augmented Reality and Biometrics According to Jerold Pereira of Videocon Mobiles, gesture wearable technology will interface with mobile devices to constantly monitor critical parameters such as control cameras, fingerprint sensors, voice recognition, blood pressure sensor, etc. The mobile devices will serve to compute and transmit this data and serve warnings if required. This will revolutionize healthcare. But Arvind Vohra of Gionee believes Indian ecosystem is not yet ready for such a feature yet. According to him augmented reality is combined metrics of various elements and just having a feature would not help the cause at least for the coming few years.

How Smartphones are Going to Play on the Cloud? Along with the power and flexibility of tomorrow's devices, we can see a leap to cloud computing be smartphones. We will witness the emergence of multi-platform cloud enterprise mobility management solutions which will enable businesses to easily secure and manage corporate and personal devices in a low-cost

and easy-to-use way. The new cloud solutions and services will minimize the complexity of managing a fleet of disparate devices from a mobile device. Ashish Guptaof BlackBerry reveals, “In recognition of how critical the cloud is for today’s modern enterprise, BlackBerry will soon launch a new, easy-to-use cloud service for managing mobile apps and devices. The new cloud service is something enterprise clients have been demanding for a long time.” Flexible controls for users, like self -service management, groups, web-based apps and content, each organization will be able to define the level of management that’s right for their business and users. “Cloud computing is a key element with increasing data consumption across devices but cloud usage reaching smartphone level to its fullest is still a few years away. At this stage it is majorly restricted to computers,” adds Arvind Vohra of Gionee.

How the Present Operating Systems will Upgrade and New Ones Evolve Smartphone makers, along with the launch of a new device are also offering updated versions of operating system that are not only visually pleasing but offer enhanced user interface (UI) which helps in seamless experience. We also see that in the future there will be more focus on a unified form of communication where the user can access to daily utility icons and application with just a simple touch gesture or the click of a button. For us the most important point has always been to cater to the requirement of the end user and with regular feedback, smartphone experience can not only be improved but can be taken to the next level. “With regards to operating system, innovation is limitless as technology evolves, we will see smarter smartphones with unique operating systems that will enhance the overall experience of the end user,” according to Ashish Gupta of BlackBerry India. Regarding operating systems, Sachin Devsare of Karbonn believes, if a new OS has to evolve, the

winner will be the one who will lead the evolution the fastest way—it has to be made simpler to use, attractive, faster, efficient and hassle free. To add to that a robust ecosystem should be developed for the developers who develop the OS.”

4G and Beyond 4G is here and with it comes a new array of functionality and speed to enhance our mobile lives, 4G LTE Advanced will bring in speedy wireless connectivity that will provide consumers cable-free home Internet connectivity options allowing download and upload speeds of up to 150 Mbps and 50 Mbps, respectively. 4G will allow businesses far greater flexibility and higher speeds and can help in online payments. Could will amplify the benefits of new technologies like data analytics, by putting them right on the front line. Praveen Valecha of Alcatel believes that with 4G upcoming, all dish TV/satellite TV being replaced with smartphone technology with 4G support and also the smartphone will redefine the meaning of digital & electronic media from technology perspective. According to Sachin Devsare of Karbonn, “At

If a new OS has to evolve, the winner will be the one who will lead the evolution the fastest way—it has to be made simpler to use, attractive, faster, efficient and hassle free present availability and coverage of networks is a limitation. Even 3G is available only in 52+ cities. A major initiative is need from the government as well for service providers to increase the availability of network across the country.”

In a nutshell

The future smartphones will be multifunctional devices with much smarter and powerful features. Devices will become slimmer and will have more powerful batteries offer longer working hours. Displays will have resolutions and will give much sharper and clearer picture. Smartphones will be able to control several devices such as desktops, laptops, home appliances, printers, remotely and more effectives. People are going to shift most of the simple and routine tasks to smartphones leaving only cumbersome and heavy work like such as office and professional work, heavy home, etc to PCs and laptops. Cloud computing via smartphone will gain momentum. Data consumption will double within three years with video occupying a major share and 4G adoption will increase data speeds. And the list seems endless. mobility October 2014

"We are not shutting down;

we are here to stay"

Sunil Lalvani, MD, BlackBerry India, in an interaction with Mobility India at the launch event of Blackberry Passport in Delhi, shared about the Blackberry Passport launch, the landscape for BlackBerry in India, and what the company is focusing on.

We are coming back with greater strength, building more and more services solutions to go with our strategy on IOT and security. BlackBerry Passport is a symbol of mobility

strengths; the third being ‘unified communication and collaboration cutting across’; and the fourth is day-by-day growing Internet of things. We have been always synonymous with the security over the years; never more so than today, when all networks worldwide complain about security and their concerns, etc.

Sunil Lalvani, MD, BlackBerry India What are the latest trends you see in the smartphone industry these days and what kind of strategy Blackberry has adopted to match or set the trend in this segment? We at Blackberry are very excited about Blackberry Passport; there is a lot that everyone talked about this product for the last few months. It was already unveiled globally in three different countries simultaneously before the India launch. Almost on a weekly basis, we are tracking the plethora of devices that are coming into the market in recent times. In today’s connected world, we all need to be socially active to stay in touch with the latest trends. Today, we are heading towards Internet of things for endpoints connected devices such as smartphones. Blackberry recognized this and acted in accordance. Few months back when we restructured our business, we reorganized ourselves into four key verticals: First one is ‘devices and hardware pieces’ continues to be the key element of our business; the second one ‘the enterprise software’ which we have been synonymous with over the years is one of our key www.mobilityindia.com

What is your outlook and business strategy for Blackberry? A lot of critiques wrote us off a year ago. People are doubting Blackberry’s long term strategy and even our existence. People are saying that we will be out of business after a year. The recent quarter result declared showed that our cash and investment continues to grow which is sign that we are on a comeback trail. Our device and hardware focus will continue, but we are rapidly growing on services and enterprise software business front. We sold almost 3.5 million new enterprise software licenses in the last two quarters. It showed one thing corporates trust us; they rely on us and they are buying, updating and using the software licenses that we have been rolling out. Our BBM base has grown from 85 million to 91 million.

What is your take on IBM-Apple tie-up? Is this a bad news for Blackberry? The market is fragmenting; there are many smaller players. The IBM and Apple tie-up is actually very good which will open up the market and there is going to be a greater proliferation of smart devices. Blackberry is several notches above all the competition when it comes to the

security certifications and enterprise technology, because we manage cross-platform devices right from BB10, BBOS, Android, IOS and by the end of the year, we will have Windows manage as well. What is more we have the largest number of third party, independent security certifications in the world; these are the things corporates want to be answered before they secure their network infrastructure with the vendors. We have 45 third party independent security certifications.

What is the target audience of your latest product Passport and how it is going to benefit? Our target audience is power professionals. The wider screen of the Passport gives the productivity or the added edge, there is powerful battery life, it has top of the line specs and the new innovative qwerty keypads with flick and swipe gesture, which is first of its kind. Hence it is a great device for professionals like lawyers, doctors, CAs, people who analyze lots of numbercrunching analytical work.

How Blackberry Passport is different from your other flagship devices? We launched Z3 in June and there is no price change till date. We have been getting good response. We had two price revisions of Z10 over a period of 18 months as we had to write down some inventory and we are now coming out of it. Passport is competitively and aggressively priced with great specifications. Blackberry Passport stands out better compared to other flagship devices of competitors in terms of specifications. mobility October 2014

"We offer Feature-rich Smart Phones at affordable price"

M

agicon Impex Pvt Ltd, incepted in 2004, is an implied manufacturer, importer and distributor of products & services including smartphones. Launched in 2011, Jivi Mobiles is the Magicon Impex’s own brand. Jivi aims to offer mobile phones rich on features at value-for-money prices. With their setups in China, Hong Kong and India, Jivi’s product range caters to different segments of the population, starting with the entry level feature and touch phones with FM to highend 3G Android-based smartphones. In a direct interaction with Mobility magazine, Pankaj Anand, CEO, Magicon Impex PVT LTD, shares his views on their plans, strategies and philosophy about their company and their own brand Jivi. Pankaj explains, “We started in 2004 as an importer & distributor. We have been pan-India distributor for several mnc brands like Nokia, SonyEricsson, etc. We are state level distributor for Apple Iphone. With over 10 years of experience in distribution, we know all the ins and outs of distribution trade. We also do sourcing of Electronics, Home appliances & many more products for various well known brands of India. We launched our Jivi brand with feature phones in 2011 in North India. Later we extended it to other regions in India. Our main emphasis from the beginning has been offering quality aftersales-service for the end users. Initially we started with 7 feature phone models. Now we have smart phones at different price points.” Jivi Mobiles ensures end-to-end service right from the R&D of the products to manufacturing, product testing and supply. While the sourcing team ensures the best in class products and accessories are offered, the technical team ensures that the best quality parameters are maintained with all the statutory compliances adhered to. Jivi believes in customer satisfaction and this is ensured through their vast network of service centers spread across the nation. Pankaj asserts, “This Jivi JSP 20, launched at MRP of Rs 1999, is the India’s thinnest smart phone with 9.4 mm thickness. It weighs just 96 grams and runs on Android 2.3 OS. For display, we have a single glass solution whereas others use ‘glass plus plastic’ or two pieces of glass. With a single camera, the phone’s battery gives 7 hrs talk-time

and 235 hrs standby time. At Rs 1999, this phone gives a feel of Rs 4000 phone of other brands. Our target audience is the people who are shifting from feature phones and touch phones to smart phones. All-in-all, we sell nearly 200,000 handsets each month without ATL activities. We were selling only through distributors channels & now we have introduced Jivi smartphone through ecommerce giant Amazon.” With more than 20 branch offices, 533 distributors and 25,000 dealers under its umbrella, Jivi, besides making a mark in India, has expanded its operations offshore Pankaj Anand, CEO, to countries like Magicon Impex PVT LTD

India, Myanmar, USA, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Africa, Hong Kong, China & Dubai. Recently Prime Minister has launched the ‘Make In India’ campaign. In this regard Pankaj explains, “As patriotic Indians, we too wish we should manufacture in India, but it is not yet feasible. In India availability of components and skilled manpower is a big problem. In China facilities, infrastructure and skilled manpower are excellent. Instead of in China, if we attempt manufacture the same in India, it would cost several times more. Made in India will be profitable if we have well-trained labor and if the components are available. At present, importing from China remains the best option. Let us hope in near future India will become an efficient manufacturing hub.” Besides having the right product, it is also

important to have the right distributors. In this regard, Pankaj states, “We have experience at all levels. We know how to select the right partners. We always focus on providing quality products through quality partners, because the quality and standard of the partners is also as important as the quality of the product. Our distributors stay with us over a long time and we believe in long time relationships based on trust and creditability. We carefully evaluate the general product line of distributor, his connections in the market and commitment. One criterion is a distributor should have 40 good retailers under him. In every area, we have service coordinators.” Regarding promotion strategy, Pankaj clarifies, “We are launching online. Soon we are launching a new model Jivi JSP 11 for Rs 2400 with more features. We will promote this through FM, print media and we also participate in small exhibitions in small towns. We have complete promotion programs planned, but often our stocks are sold out even before we launch our promotion programs. In small towns we put up canopies near colleges to promote our phones to the students and also near gram panchayats. We will work on 360 degrees. We have an excellent channel network. Our marketing team regularly takes feedback and then technical team in consultation with the marketing team and management determines the requirements. After that the desired specs are forwarded to our R&D and design team in China. We provide only the necessary apps with our phones so that cost remains reasonable to the buyers. Some apps the buyer can load himself. Whenever a buyer purchases our handset, he will get the complete kit which tells him where our service centers are and how to get the service, etc. We also provide quality accessories. So far we have been selling 200,000 feature phones. About the recently launched smart phone, we hope to sell 200,000 smart phone handsets (in addition to feature phones and touch phones which we have been already selling) a month within a few months. As far as online is concerned, we first post it online for the people to know and after that they will go to offline dealers. We maintain price parity between online and offline selling so that there is no clash between online and offline sales.”
