PANEL DISCUSSION

Technology, Trends and Latest Innovations that will drive the Mobility Industry

The panelists in the Panel Discussion on ‘The current trends in technology & innovations in the mobility industry’ included Mr. Sarabjeet Singh, SwiftKey Country Manager India, Microsoft, Anil Tiwari, Product Head of Comio, Syed Tajuddin, CEO of Coolpad, Dev Kumar, CTO, of Niron. The Panel Discussion discussed how the latest innovations and trends are going to affect the user experiences in 2018 and up to 2020. The Panel Discussion was skillfully coordinated by Arvind Passey. Mr. Arvind: By 2018, 67% Americans and 28% Indians will have smartphones in their hands, but India’s population is very high, so there will more smartphones in India than in USA. To what extend AI is expected to dominate the scene? Please give some insight into the implications of this development on the business and users habits. Mr. Tajuddin: In the last 3 years, it was the hardware and then the software that dominated in the feature-set of smartphones, but now it seems to be the turn of AI (artificial intelligence). Of course, the demand for higher RAM and memory will continue on the hardware side. Mr. Sarabjeet Singh: Swift Key from Microsoft is the first step in the direction of AI that is set to dominate the user experience in the coming 3 years and beyond. The app, over time, will adapt to the habits of the user. It can translate audio into a language that you can understand. Many times,

MOBILITY JANUARY 2018

we speak to people whose language we do not know. This app is a first step in that direction to help the users to break this barrier and decipher the unknown language. They can now record the speech and translate it and understand that. With practice they can do better. Such translation apps are already available over internet, but Swift Key for mobiles is much advanced app that will be a great help to users. Mr. Arvind: Yes, transcribing even the language we know is a very painful task. If the app like that of Microsoft can really transcribe an unknown language, it will be a great help to users. I am sure this will be a revolutionary app. Next, safety and security of user’s data and personal information are becoming main issues nowadays. Can you throw some light on these aspects? Mr. Tajuddin: Breach of security can happen two ways: first a hacker can intrude into our devices and steal our information. And second, several times when people download apps, they do not read terms & conditions, they simply click ACCEPT. While doing this, without their knowledge they are surrendering many things: they virtually give the app provider

9

many rights over their information unknowingly. For example, Reliance Jio has software that tracks all your purchases, visits, movements, etc. Consumers should be careful not to give permission on their private information as there are apps that can copy your data and use it for other purposes without your knowledge. There is going to be AI revolution by 2020 by which time the real and wider usage is expected to come into the market impacting the lives of the people. Mr. Sarabjeet: I think government in future will impose more security norms. Today everything should be compliant with BIS and I think this is a first step towards improving the safety and security of the users. Mr. Dev Kumar: Security and privacy are important factors. For instance, Android is an open source platform. So the telecom carriers can obtain all the information like what you purchase, where you purchase, for how much you purchase, which places you visited and so on. Many times the users may give permission without being conscious of it. So manufacturers should provide all the right protections to the handset users. Mr. Tajuddin: Manufacturers should focus on what the users need, rather than on loading too many features which only increases the prices. Nothing is free, everything costs directly or indirectly. Gov also should take more initiatives to ensure the security of the handset users so that the handset providers and carriers do not mislead or cheat the users and steal their information. Mr. Arvind: Pricing is another issue. If we introduce high technology, does it increase the cost of the phones enormously? How can we balance the prices and the features & technology that we can offer to the users? What do you foresee for the future? What forms major component of price, hardware or software? Mr. Anil Tiwari: I feel software and hardware are equally important for the performance of the handeset. Today, along with hardware, users want good performance of the hardware. They want dual cams, finger print recognition, long battery life, good aesthetics, highly responsive & bigger displays, high power processors, higher RAM and so on. Along with the speed of the Internet, users also need higher processing power of the handsets. Today handsets need 6GB RAM and octacore processors. Also we need apps that can be optimized according to the need of the user. With more people using them with time, users will get more apps and features at lesser prices. Mr. Tajuddin: As economic standards and per capita income rises, people will become less price-sensitive and grow more feature- and function-sensitive. They do not mind paying a few bucks more, but they want better features and performance.

Mr. Sarabjit: India is today an attractive market so many mobile players are converging on this market today. With increasing competition and more brands in the market, people want better value-for-money. For example, AI needs different type of hardware and software, which can push up the price. But since people today want better performance and experience, they are willing to pay that extra. Mr. Anil Tiwari: In our Comio handsets we included free anti-virus, anit theft and anti-data sealing features. Mr. Arvind: It seems out of the 300 million handsets currently imported, 200 million are imported, since we do not have the infrastructure to manufacture them locally. Do you think this aspect can also compromise on security to the foreign manufacturers? Mr. Tajuddin: We need a lot of steps from the government to improve the infrastructure like tax rebases, security, availability of raw materials and components, etc to encourage local production. Just manufacturing cabinets will not help. The Make in India scheme is good, but the ecosystem should improve a lot before we can implement the scheme successfully to make it really beneficial to the industry and country. Mr. Arvind: Can you throw some light on the current Internet speed and its effects on usage? Can we expect improvement on the speed of mobile internet in 2018? Mr. Niron: Currently, though the carriers claim to provide 4G, we are in fact getting only 3G speeds. The latest features like video calling, video conferencing, doctor consultation, etc need higher Internet speeds. Our ecosystem still needs to evolve to that level. From the ways things are going I feel it be 2020 by the time the Internet speed evolves the comfortable levels. Mr. Arvind: What happens when you drop a phone and the data is lost? Earlier, we used to keep record in paper notebooks, but today, keep all in phone. If phone is gone all that is saved is gone. Today we are conditioned that way. Mr. Sarabjeet: The innovative Swift Key from Microsoft, the more you use it the more it will customize things according to your habbits. Even if you handset gets damaged, your info is saved on the cloud which you can retrieve any time later you want. Reliance Jio is a smart feature phone. With margins shrinking, software apps are going to be the major differentiators and revenue earners for the smart phone makers in future. Hardware will more or less get standardized. To Sum Up From the panel discussion, we understand that with a plethora of apps on the Internet, stealing information and tracking the users’ habits who often give away permissions to without their knowledge is a dangerous trend. The government should give some clear guidelines to the app providers who should clearly inform users of the implications. Next, industry experts see more AI apps will be use starting from 2018 and reaching common usage levels by 2020. The coming years will also see more improvements on hardware side, like higher power processors, higher RAM and higher Internet speeds in the coming 3 years. As per capita income increases, people will look for better phones than cheaper prices.

PANEL DISCUSSION

Panel Discussion: Make in India

The panelists in the Panel Discussion on ‘Make in India and Mobility Industry’ included Mr. Ashwani Budhiraja, Co-Founder & Chief Technology Officer, MSAI, Mr. Kumar Deep Banerjee, Head External Communications, Vodafone India, Ms. Nirmalatha M Vice President - IT Promotion Andhra Pradesh Electronics & Information Technology Agency, Mr. Dev Kumar, CTO, Neron, Mr. Manuj Adlakha, Manager Business Developer, Cargo People Logistics & Shipping Pvt. Ltd, Mr. Vinay Dixit, President, Kolkata Mobile Retailers Welfare Association, 7. The Panel Discussion discussed how the how India mobility industry progressing in terms of Make in India. The Panel Discussion was skillfully coordinated by Mr. Arvind Passey. Mr. Arvind Passey: Skill training is something everyone is concerned as well as confused. The general complaint is that in India there are a lot of educated people the availability of people with right skills is poor. NSDC says the percentage of skilled people will go from the current 2% to 10% in the coming years, but it is still to be achieved. Some people say that the current Make in India is just Assemble in India or we have today are just screwdriver shops whereas all the components are imported from abroad. Let us hear what the experts gathered here say about this. Mr. Kumar Deep Banerjee : According to reports, in the coming years India’s digital economy will be 1 trillion dollars, which includes, ecommerce transactions, digital payments, telemedicine, etc. Of this, nearly 40% will be contributed by mobile ecommerce. To facilitate digital economy, we need lot of infrastructure and equipment which is expected to eventually boost Make in India. Ms. Nirmalatha M : Today, Make in India is only Assemble in India but definitely we took the first step in the

MOBILITY JANUARY 2018

direction of making things domestically. For example, in AP, Fox Conn’s mobile phones factory is providing 15,000 jobs and Celkon’s plant is providing 6000 jobs. Buy 2020, AP Chief Minister wants to create 2 million additional jobs under make in India. We could clearly see Make in India is bearing fruits in AP. Getting the right location, right workers and the presence of right infrastructure are main concerns for those who want to make in India. They have to pick and choose. Now, in AP, government is encouraging lot of schools and agencies to provide right training to the people in assembling and testing. Now in AP, the schemes are being actively and effectively being implemented, they are no longer confined to papers. South India is far ahead in software technology. Mr. Ashwani Budhiraja : While making in India, security is also important. We have to manufacture devices that are safe and also that perform well, which needs multi-level testing. Next, security is also important. For example, an SMS can be intercepted at any stage. We need to encrypt all the messages and decrypt safely. Mobile chipsets have

12

PANEL DISCUSSION

a lot of vulnerabilities. India is far behind when it comes to cybersecurity. Device compliance to the security is important. IoT is going to change a lot in the coming years. Through IoT soon we will have cars that can communicate with other cars using the captured data from sources like Google. India is going to change a lot in future. Mr. Vinay Dixit: WB is industrially backward due to trade unionism. West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Mukherjee is trying her best to change the situation, but still there is a long way to go before making things favorable to Make in India. Ms. Nirmalatha M: Today, the trend is even students are rejecting good placement offers as they want to become entrepreneurs. The startup mentality is catching up. This trend is very impressive. Mr. Arvind Passey: Now several mobile carriers are planning to invest trillions of rupees in infrastructure in the coming years. What effect will it have on Make in India. Mr. Kumar Deep Banerjee: Vodafone has invested 3 lakh crore rupees in India and is the single largest FDI Investor in India. There is scope for innovation at every level with today so many interactions taking place via telecom with many apps riding on the SIMs. Latency will decrease in the coming years enabling faster and trouble-free interactions. There is no surprise if in the coming years a doctor in Hyd operates a patient in Delhi by directing a robot remotely. Mr. Dev Kumar: In one case, when a doctor was dealing with a cancer patient via video, the video failed but at the end we could give the patient medicine. Carriers and government should work in tandem to provide high speed Internet. Carriers say they offer 4G speed, but at present we get much less. Along with Make in India we should also focus Make Things Better in India. Mr. Arvind Passey: We often talk about technology and innovations, but let us throw some light on the role played by human element while making and implementing things in India. Mr. Manuj Adlakha: Logistics in one area where India is still lagging behind. For instance, imported things take 18 days to arrive from China to Bombay, but from Bombay to Delhi, they take 25 days. These transit times should shorten to make Make in India successful. Right now Make in India is only a concept and a lot many things have to improve before it becomes a real practice. Mr. Arvind Passey: Success of Make in India also depends on the availability of manpower with right skills. Please let us know your views on this. Ms. Nirmalatha M: In AP, fortunately, we do not have much problem of trade unions. A negative type of trade unionism can pull down the industry and severely hamper Make in India program. It is necessary that the management

MOBILITY JANUARY 2018

and workers sit across the table and settle the matters in an amicable manner. Mr. Arvind Passey: Finally, what improvements do you suggest? Mr. Manuj Adlakha: Right implementation is very crucial, not just policies on papers. We need quick and effective decision making at the government level. We need a lot of improvements on infrastructure level. Mr. Vinay Dixit: We should also focus more on using domestically developed software apps to ensure security. For example, in China, they use only locally made apps. When apps are developed abroad, we just do not what hidden features they have which seriously compromise the security. Mr. Ashwani Budhiraja: The bottom line is India is a democracy and here we cannot implement as effectively as an authoritarian regime like China can. We should learn to walk before we run a marathon. In spite of many constraints, I think, Make in India making slow but steady progress. I hope it will soon take off to bring lot of beneďŹ ts to the nation and the society. There is also a big gap between qualiďŹ cations and skillsets. We have to take Make in India from the current Level 0 to Level 1. Right now hackers are looking for vulnerabilities at different levels and they becoming more and more sophisticated every next day. Now we need to take Secure India as seriously as we take Make in India. Security should be ensured at different levels thus minimizing the scope of cyber intruders. Mr. Manuj Adlakha: For the Make in India to be successful, we need to have good logistics system. We need a holistic ecosystem. Our company is assisting many Chinese manufacturers to set up their plants in India. We see good progress in Make in India. Mr. Dev Kumar: For Make in India to be successful, we need technically trained people available. We need to encourage technology transfer and innovation in India and most importantly ensure the availability of components and infrastructure. For example, if someone wants to manufacture in India, he still have to procure RAM, Camera, processor, etc from outside India; this is big hindrance as of now. Arvind: What initiatives you feel the government should take to drive Make in India? Mr. Dev Kumar: We identiďŹ ed several pain points and took them to the government. They are being examined by the government. We also installed our equipment in a lot of government departments. Our devices besides being innovative also justify commercial viability.
