GDPR –
Embracing the new world order
I
n two days, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will become enforceable. A tectonic shift in the global privacy paradigm, the data protection law will herald a new era in consumer trust. As a company, Microsoft has individual privacy rights and security in its DNA. That is why in February of last year we announced we would be GDPR compliant across our cloud services by the deadline. We embraced GDPR proactively. It is also a matter of great pride that we have helped customers round the world be GDPR-ready ahead of time. Data at the center As we stand amidst the fourth industrial revolution, maintaining the integrity of personal data has become as imperative to national security as protecting a country’s cyber borders. Organizations are under increased scrutiny, with everybody from lawmakers and investors to employees and consumers examining the relationship between what’s good for business and what’s good for individuals. Regulations like GDPR will begin a dialogue about what nations and multilateral stakeholders can to do to streamline a system of checks and balances on a digital planet. The impact GDPR is the biggest change in European data protection laws in more than 20 years, bringing this area of law into the digital age. It designates individual choice as a priority over everything else. It stands on the pillars of mutual trust and respect, both of which are core to running any sustainable, ethical organization. It will govern how organizations within and outside the EU will collect, manage, process, and protect personal data while respecting individual choice. To me, this is a golden opportunity for India to drive thought leadership in the global market. We can build expertise and capabilities, create new lines of advisory and consulting businesses, develop a market differentiator and be a source of competitiveness. One merely has to look around to witness how fast India is making strides in its journey towards cloud migration. With millions going online for the first time, protecting their vulnerabilities cannot be compromised in our long march forward. The Supreme Court of India demonstrated its commitment to its citizens when it declared privacy a fundamental right last year, and now the onus is upon us as an industry to play our part. Enabling companies for the transition At Microsoft, we understand how critical our role is, in enhancing the privacy of customer data. Upholding customer trust in digital technology is at the heart of what we do. Staying secure in a digital-first, cloud-first world can be tough, especially

with constant cyber threats and the rules and regulations surrounding cybersecurity. We recognize that we and others in the tech sector have the first responsibility to address these issues, as we are in the center of things, building the products and operating the platforms. However, security is increasingly becoming a shared responsibility – between security providers and customers, and only by working together can bold ideas be developed for overcoming the security challenges of tomorrow. We began work on GDPR as soon as it was adopted by the European Union. We have over 300 full-time engineers focused on GDPR compliance and have adopted over 30 controls based on GDPR. Our preparations for GDPR touch every part of our company – from our senior leadership who drive our commitment all the way to individual engineers on our product teams who write code. We have made significant investments in our products and services to help our customers with GDPR compliance within Azure, Office 365, Windows, EMS, SQL Database and Dynamics 365. We designed our cloud products with industryleading privacy policies and security measures to safeguard customer data in the cloud, including the categories of personal data identified by GDPR. We have always taken an ecosystem view of things. In our experience, sharing knowledge and best practices has inevitably proved the best path to progress. We have been helping customers be GDPR-ready in time by providing the best data governance, security, and privacy tools in the market. We are proud that many of the largest global companies are entrusting Microsoft to support them in GDPR compliance. In fact, we were the first major cloud provider to offer the contractual commitments required by GDPR to its customers. Through our cloud services and on-premises solutions we are helping them locate and catalog the personal data in their systems, build more secure environments, simplify management and monitor personal data. Yesterday, Julie Brill, Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Privacy and Regulatory Affairs, published a bloghighlighting our commitment to GDPR compliance in our own offerings, as well as our commitment to extend key privacy rights in GDPR to customers outside of the EU. She also highlighted our focus to support our enterprise customers with their own GPDR compliance obligations. As digitalization shapes the contours of our new economy, we will continue to shoulder our shared responsibility and empower entities that work with us to comply. Through transparency and accountability, we will also strive to preserve the trust our users and organizations have in us, and continue to empower them to achieve more.

Industry Report
Supply Chain – The New Weak Link In Business Security As Ransomware Attacks Increase, According To Dimension Data 2017 saw a worrying increase in ransomware and other cyberattacks targeting the supply chain, with the business and professional services sector receiving a significant increase of attacks, particularly in the EMEA region, which saw 20% of all attacks targeting this sector. This is according to Dimension Data that today published its Executive Guide to the NTT Security 2018 Global Threat Intelligence Report. The businesses and professional services sector received 10% of global ransomware attacks, the third most targeted industry (up from sixth position in 2016), behind finance and technology. It also ranked third in the Americas (9%) and was the most vulnerable sector in EMEA, receiving 20% of all attacks. As ransomware-related outsourced incident response engagements against financial institutions declined (a drop from 22% in 2016 to 5% last year), the business and professional services supply chain has clearly become a prime target for trade secrets and intellectual property theft, potentially exposing customer and business partner data. Despite the drop in outsourced incident response engagements, the finance sector remains the number one target for cyber criminals who carry out regular reconnaissance to spot potential infrastructure and application vulnerabilities. Murtaza Bhatia, National Business Head, Cybersecurity, Dimension Data India said, “In India too, there are numerous moving parts to supply chains and outsourcing companies, which often run on disparate and out-dated network infrastructures, making them easy prey to cyber threat actors. Service providers and outsourcers are also a prime target, due to their trade secrets and intellectual property. Businesses need to wise-up to the very real threats against them, and ensure all aspects of their operations are robustly and securely protected.” Technology was the second most cyber-attacked industry
Mobility MAY 2018
in 2017, with a 19% attack volume, with business and professional services moving to third place. Interestingly, attacks on the government sector last year dropped to 5% from 9% in 2016. In 2017, there was a massive 350% rise in ransomware, representing 7% of all global malware attacks (up from 1% in 2016), and is set to continue due to the popularity of cyber adversary campaigns. Other highlights in the NTT Security 2018 Global Threat Intelligence Report include: • The technology and finance sectors account for 70% of all attacks in the Americas. The US is a world leader in technology innovation while the finance sector collects and stores a vast amount of personal data which cyber criminals can monetise • Education was the most attacked sector in Australia (26%). With an open network model and collaborative environments that enable connectivity and research between students, campuses, colleges, and universities, this is a valuable target. • Attacks on the APAC manufacturing sector have dropped to a mere 7% (32% in 2016), because of the adoption of enhanced security governance and proactivity in raising cyber defenses. • Attacks against the finance sector decreased from 46% in 2016 to 26% in 2017, but it remained the most attacked sector in APAC. This was caused by servicespecific attacks. • Increased attacks against education doubled: from 9% in 2016 to 18% in 2017. • China was the top attack source for manufacturing cyber-incidents, accounting for 67% of hostile activities targeting the sector in EMEA.

Special Story
The pace at which human-machine technologies are evolving and getting seamlessly integrated into our lives is unimaginable. Here’s a look at the top technologies that are impacting the way we think, love and communicate. Artificial Intelligence (AI) AI is the biggest trend that has grown exponentially. Combined with machine learning, AI has the potential to not only bring about enormous changes in business, it can help create solutions for prevalent social issues. A large number of organizations have begun to realize the direct implications of infusing AI in their operations. While the ground work in AI has already begun, the times ahead are exciting as the ideas and prototypes are taking shape in real projects across multiple sectors – healthcare, retail, construction, banking, manufacturing, etc. AI-powered software improves the efficiency of document analysis for legal use and machines can review documents and flag them as relevant to a particular case. Once a certain type of document is denoted as relevant, machine learning algorithms can get to work to find other documents that are similarly relevant. Machines are much faster at sorting through documents than humans and can produce output and results that can be statistically validated. They can help reduce the load on the human workforce by forwarding on only documents that are questionable rather than requiring humans to review all documents. It’s important that legal research is done in a timely and comprehensive manner, even though it’s monotonous. Today, AI is an umbrella term that encompasses everything from robotic process automation to actual robotics. It has gained prominence recently due, in part, to big data, or the increase in speed, size and variety of data businesses are now collecting. AI can perform tasks such as identifying patterns in the data more efficiently than humans, enabling businesses to gain more insight out of their data. According to Constellation Research, by 2025, the AI market will surpass $100 billion and IDC states, by 2018, 75% of developer teams will include AI functionality in one or more application or service. Internet of Things (IoT) “Things” in the IoT sense, can refer to a wide variety of devices such as heart monitoring implants, biochip transponders on farm animals, cameras streaming live feeds of wild animals in coastal waters, automobiles with built-in sensors, DNA analysis devices for environmental/food/ pathogen monitoring, or field operation devices that assist firefighters in search and rescue operations. Legal scholars suggest regarding “things” as an “inextricable mixture of hardware, software, data and service”. These devices collect useful data with the help of various existing technologies and then autonomously flow the data between other devices. There seems to be a general consensus that term “the Internet of things” was coined by Kevin Ashton of Procter & Gamble, later MIT’s Auto-ID Center, in 1999. The first written and referable source that mentions the Internet of Things seems to be the White Paper published by the MIT Auto-ID Center in November 2001 (but made public only in February 2002), which cites an earlier paper from October 2000. The first research article mentioning the Internet of Things appears to be, which was preceded by an article published in Finnish in January 2002. The implementation described there was developed by Kary Främling and his team at Helsinki University of Technology in Finland. Contrary to the rather RFID and Supply Chain Management view of the Internet of Things, the vision of the Internet of Things presented there was closer Mobility MAY 2018
to the modern one, i.e. an information system infrastructure for implementing smart, connected objects. It has been predicted that IoT will comprise 200 billion ‘smart’ devices by the year 2020. That roughly equals 26 ‘smart’ devices per person on the planet. These smart devices would need to be collaboratively connected through the internet, converting the devices into one big integrated system driving a major shift in human-machine interaction. Implications of this technology are immense, which can be as simple as a smart home to an entire city! At present, IoT is being used by businesses to increase process efficiencies and deliver better customer experiences, thus generating new revenue streams. Blockchain Blockchain is a digital ledger that provides a secure way of making and recording transactions, agreements and contracts. Coupled with cryptocurrencies, it has incited a media frenzy, however, the opportunities it presents for business is yet to be truly explored. After the initial hype around blockchain in the financial services’ industry, we are seeing many more potential use
cases for the government, healthcare, manufacturing, supply chain/logistics, F&B and other industries. In 2018, many blockchain technology platforms will move from development phase to pilot phase in the banking, media and industrial sectors. Information held on a blockchain exists as a shared — and continually reconciled — database. This is a way of using the network that has obvious benefits. The blockchain database isn’t stored in any single location, meaning the records it keeps are truly public and easily verifiable. No centralized version of this information exists for a hacker to corrupt. Hosted by millions of computers simultaneously, its data is accessible to anyone on the internet. Anything that happens on it is a function of the network as a whole. Some important implications stem from this. By creating a new way to verify transactions aspects of traditional commerce could become unnecessary. Stock market trades become almost simultaneous on the blockchain, for instance — or it could make types of record keeping, like a land registry, fully public. And decentralization is already a reality. A global network of computers uses blockchain technology to jointly manage the database that records Bitcoin transactions. That is, Bitcoin is managed by its network, and not any one central authority. Decentralization means the
Special Story network operates on a user-to-user (peer-to-peer) basis. The forms of mass collaboration this makes possible are just beginning to be investigated. Cloud-based architecture Cloud based architecture has been around for quite a while now but in 2018, we expect to see many more organizations take advantage of the simplicity and highperformance the cloud guarantees, as well as a sharp uptick in cloud-hosted Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) that provides an opportunity to grow computing capabilities without costly investments in infrastructure, physical or technical. Cloud computing resources are delivered by server-based applications through digital networks or through the public Internet itself. The applications are made available for user access via mobile and desktop devices. This much is pretty obvious. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), these are the five specific qualities that define cloud computing. Like on-demand self-service; broad network access; resource pooling; rapid elasticity or expansion and measured service Front End This is the visible interface that computer users or clients encounter through their web-enabled client devices. But it should be clear here that not all cloud computing systems will use the same user interface. Back End On the other hand, back end is the “cloud” part of a cloud computing architecture, comprising all the resources required to deliver cloud-computing services. A system’s back end can be made up of a number of bare metal servers, data storage facilities, virtual machines, a security mechanism, and services, all built in conformance with a deployment model, and all together responsible for providing a service. It is the primary authority and responsibility of the back end to provide a built-in security mechanism, traffic control, and protocols. The operating system on a bare metal server – known popularly as a hypervisor – makes use of well-defined protocols allowing multiple guest virtual machines to run concurrently. The hypervisor guides communication between its containers and the connected world beyond. The server virtualization methodology used by hypervisors bypasses some of the physical limitations that stand-alone servers can face. Virtualization allows software to trick a physical server into thinking it is in fact part of a multiple server environment, and therefore capable of drawing on extra, otherwise underutilized, capacity. As the numbers of services hosted by a cloud computing provider grow, the demands of higher traffic and compute loads that obviously grow with it must be anticipated and accommodated. But exponentially growing demands for storage space can’t be ignored. To properly maintain and protect a client’s data, a cloud computing architecture requires greater redundancy than might be needed for locally hosted systems. The copies generated by this necessary redundancy allow the central server to jump in and access backup images to quickly retrieve and restore needed data. In a cloud computing architecture, all applications are controlled, managed, and served by a cloud server. It’s data is replicated and preserved remotely as part of the cloud configuration. A well integrated cloud system can create nearly limitless efficiencies and possibilities. Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) Worldwide spending on AR and VR is expected to reach $17.8 billion in 2018, which is 95% more than the $9.1 billion spent in 2017. Businesses are quickly understanding the potential of AR and are integrating the technology into their business and marketing plans to make most of the first-mover opportunities available. Industries like telecommunication, manufacturing, energy where the workforce is scattered to remote areas are already using AR extensively for communication, training, etc. The scope is even greater in healthcare where AR can be used in the operating room by bringing the virtual elements to the real world. F8 2018: Open AI Frameworks and New AR/VR Advancements F8 focused on the long-term technology investments in
three areas: connectivity, AI, and AR/VR. Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer kicked off the keynote, followed by Engineering Director Srinivas Narayanan, Research Scientist Isabel Kloumann, and Head of Core Tech Product Management Maria Fernandez Guajardo. From advances in bringing connectivity to more people throughout the world to state-of-the-art research breakthroughs in AI to the development of entirely new experiences in AR/VR, Facebook continues to build new technologies that will bring people closer together and help keep them safe. At F8 artificial intelligence research and engineering teams shared a recent breakthrough: the teams successfully trained an image recognition system on a data set of 3.5 billion publicly available photos, using the hashtags on those photos in place of human annotations. This new technique will allow researchers to scale their work much more quickly, and they’ve already used it to score a record-high 85.4% accuracy on the widely used ImageNet benchmark. This image recognition work is powered by our AI research and production tools: PyTorch, Caffe2, and ONNX. They also announced the next version of our open source AI framework, PyTorch 1.0, which combines the capabilities of all these tools to provide everyone in the AI research community with a fast, seamless path for building a broad range of AI projects. The technology in PyTorch 1.0 is already being used at scale, including performing nearly 6 billion text translations per day for the 48 most commonly used languages on Facebook. In VR, these tools have helped in deploying new research into production to make avatars move more realistically. The PyTorch 1.0 toolkit will be available in beta within the next few months, making Facebook’s state-of-the-art AI research tools available to everyone. With it, developers can take advantage of computer vision advances like DensePose, which can put a full polygonal mesh overlay on people as they move through a scene — something that will help make AR camera applications more compelling. For a deeper dive on all of today’s AI updates and advancements, including our open source work on ELF OpenGo, check out the posts on our Engineering Blog or visit facebook.ai/developers, where you can get tools and code to build your own applications. Facebook’s advancements in AR and VR draw from an array of research areas to help us create better shared experiences, regardless of physical distance. From capturing realistic-looking surroundings to producing next-generation avatars, we’re closer to making AR/VR experiences feel like reality. Our research scientists have created a prototype system that can generate 3D reconstructions of physical spaces with surprisingly convincing results. The video below shows a sideby-side comparison between normal footage and a 3D reconstruction. Realistic surroundings are important for creating more immersive AR/VR, but so are realistic avatars. These advances in AI and AR/VR are relevant only if you have access to a strong internet connection — and there are currently 3.8 billion people around the world that don’t have internet access. To increase connectivity around the world, we’re focused on developing next-generation technologies that can help bring the cost of connectivity down to reach the unconnected and increase capacity and performance for everyone else. To conclude, half of the year has gone by and it already looks very promising for technological innovations. The exponential improvement of technologies will not only allow every business industry to flourish but also impact our daily lives.

Co-working spaces essentially provide 3 things that make them a popular phenomenon - competitively priced infrastructure, plenty of networking opportunities, and a relaxed work environment. Ankur Gupta, Cofounder, ABL Workplaces Q. Tell us everything about your startup, what
does it do? What were the challenges of setting up and scale and how did you overcome them? We are more than year old startup based out of Delhi operating in the Co-working Space segment with an aim to position ourselves as a premium player in the serviced office industry. Products we offer currently include open seat, private office and virtual office. Our clientele includes 20% of Startups and freelancers, and rest is a balanced percentage of SMEs and Corporate. We are currently available in premium locations like Connaught Place, Green Park and Okhla. The total combined area we are operating in currently is 14,000 sq ft with about 300 seats. While main challenge in setting up ABL Workspaces was right investors and smooth funding, but through our in-depth analysis of the industry and timely plan alteration, we were able to tackle the situation. Instead of going the traditional way of pitching the business model to prospective investors, we started off as a bootstrap startup. However, we knew this is not going to sustain long and we would soon require funds. That’s when we leveraged our connections and associated with investors in our peer group for funding on per project basis. Apart from that, we did face some trouble in finding the right pricing that is ‘premium but convenient’ and ‘elegant yet approachable’. Q. How did you come up with the idea and what was the Eureka moment? It’s actually the concept of the segment that impressed me so much. Sometime back I was working on a real estate project of 80,000 sq ft which I had to monetize and garner footfall. But due to a certain inadequacy of the space, it failed to grab the attention of retailers, anchor tenant and fnb enthusiast. Monetizing the project becomes a challenge and I had to study the different methods and ways how the project can be

commercialized. That’s when I educated myself to ways co-working spaces are disrupting the traditional real estate market. Naturally as a solution, I proposed a business plan from a serviced office space point, unfortunately, due to lack of budget, the idea didn’t get a green signal from the property owner. Well, the moment when the idea didn’t get an approval became the Eureka moment when I decided to implement it and make it a reality. As not only did the method of co-working seemed to be interesting but being from the real estate background I did realize that it’s going to flourish at lightning speed and there lies a great opportunity to redefine the way co-working space functions currently. Q. How did you build the core team (co-founders and initial employees) - How did you meet and how did everyone align with the idea? What is the total team size? As you may know it’s a co-founded company by my wife Akshita and myself. Aksita is from hospitality industry while I have real estate background. To run a co-working space efficiently you need to have great knowledge about designing, management & sales of the space along with the warm and comfortable environment. That’s where both of our expertise lies in and responsibilities are streamlined accordingly. We will try to restrict our core team to both of us only as we want to remain watchdogs to our respective jobs for the sake of keeping up with the quality of our service. Apart from that, we have outsourced around 20 employees who support us in different verticals and help us execute our thoughts. Q. Give us a background of your core team and yourself with the age. As mentioned earlier Akshita and I form the core team and we both are in our early thirties. commerce graduate from Meerut University, Akshita
Solution is a trained photographer from National Academy of Photography. She always had that instinct of entering the hospitality industry, which is why even after studying business she pursued her dream of becoming a cabin crew and successfully flown with Kingfisher Airlines for around 3 years before enrolling herself into photography. Her first exposure to entrepreneurship happened when she formulated a probiotic drink that became an instant hit. Although due to some initial production glitches, her maiden project discontinued since then there was no looking back and innovation continued in partnership with her entrepreneur sister. While Akshita had a dynamic career, I groomed myself to fit in my 4-decade old family business of real estate. The foundation stone towards this direction was laid when I went to study Business & Management at The University of Bradford, UK. As mentioned earlier, when the idea of optimizing the space didn’t pan out with the heads of that project, I discussed the business plan with my father who encouraged me to do it myself. This approach inspired me to start up ABL workspaces in Green Park in January 2017 and then there was no looking back. Q. What has been Revenue, traction and growth from the date of inception till now? We are fortunate enough that our product was accepted in the market well, therefore the growth has been quite steady since we began. This has been our constant encouragement to come up with new spaces one after another. As we mentioned, the total combined area we are operating in currently is 14,000 sq ft with about 300 seats. Across locations, we were able to sell out 100 percent space in a month’s time from the day of the launch. Approximately the monthly revenue has been around 25 lacs. Q. What is the one thing that sets you apart from your competitors and what’s your revenue model? Co-working spaces essentially provide 3 things that make them a popular phenomenon - competitively priced infrastructure, plenty of networking opportunities, and a relaxed work environment. All players do emphasise on these areas but what set us apart from the competition is the approachability to the founders which you would not find in any other serviced office provider. We communicate with our clients directly and there’s no executive or a middleman involved. Even on our website, my personal mobile number is mentioned so that I myself can answer all queries of prospective clients. From visiting the space till conversion and followed by their experience, Akshita and I personally takes care of the consumer’s journey. That not only allows us to provide customized service to each of our users but also helps us improvise our offerings by incorporating their feedback. Apart from the service quality, our direct connection with clients have helped us cut on the time for internal processes and approvals and issues are resolved within the shortest time span. Apart from this, we have a very transparent costing. Unlike others, we don’t have any top-up service for different amenities that we offer at our spaces. It’s a onetime fee that our user has to pay and they can enjoy the entire serviced office for that stipulated time. The client must have peace of mind that they don’t have to worry about extra billings end of the period. Our revenue model is also quite thought which we think is another most important takeaway for our clients.
We often launch various One-Time-Offers for limited bookings like we are running one currently. The package comes for 15,000/- in which you get 150 days of desk + 150 hours of meeting rooms + business address. The pricing comes to as low as 100/per day which is light on the pocket too. Otherwise, there have both fixed and flexible desk options, which can be rented on monthly to yearly basis. We also provide Private Office Spaces with four or more seating, which are again rented on monthly to yearly basis and virtual office. Q. How are you funded? As mentioned earlier we have project-specific investors. Q. Future plans? How you aim to achieve it? In just about a year we have successfully established ourselves in 3 significant locations and one more in the pipeline. We aim to become a local giant with a prominence in Delhi NCR, then slowly expand in this fashion, capturing the market city-by-city. We aim at launching at least 15 more spaces in Delhi NCR in coming two years time. We are looking for local partnerships and funding by end of the year. Our experience so far with project wise partnerships has been fruitful and we wish to continue the same model. We are always in search of wellconnected locations and good deals. The journey of creating a quality end product begins with an appropriate property. Q. Talk to us about the industry you are currently working on and its challenges. What has been the brand’s strategy to disrupt the sector? As reported by CBRE Group, the co-working space segment in India is expected to touch 10 million sq ft by 2020, with 2017 witnessing the absorption of nearly 1.5 million sq ft of space. The way people are shifting from own car to Ola and Uber is how clients are moving from their own offices to serviced office. Challenges are huge with global brands entering India and the speed in which local players are mushrooming. Apart from the steep industry growth, easy entry to the business is attracting new players every day. Well, the strategy has been always to offer the best experience to the users even if it comes at a cost. Every aspect of the service is technically sound be it the premium locations to as minimum as the furniture’s that are used in the interior. We are always trying to build a space that we would like to work in and spent 9 hours of the day and not from the perspective of selling them to make money.

The limited-edition Silk White uses pearl powder to create a subtle shimmering effect.
