VOICE Bullish on Tablets
W
ith vicious competition eroding margins in the mobile handset business, India’s own telecom heroes such as Micromax, Lava and Karbonn are now focusing on the tablet market, following the footsteps of their global counterparts. Completely entrenched players such as Micromax and Olive have already launched tablets for the Indian market at a price point ranging between `5,000 and `7,000. The latest entrant is Karbonn mobiles. Another brand, Lava, is all set to make it debut in the category this month with the launch of its tablet priced at around `6,000. It is quite interesting to note that the average price points of tablets are better than the handsets and smartphones. It helps tablet vendors improve on the bottom lines as well as the top lines. And yes, creating appropriate content for these tablets must also be a strategic focus for these players as handset makers cannot treat tablets as a box item like mobile. Primarily a tablet is nothing but a content device that is solely going to run on the content side. According to CyberMedia Research, about 475,000 units of media tablets were sold in India in calendar year 2011. In the January-March period of 2012, India saw the sales of nearly 3,50,000 units of media tablets. India’s market has become particularly competitive since 4Q of 2010 when Samsung launched the first tablet model in India. RIM’s Playbook, Apple’s iPad2, Motorola’s Xoom and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 7 are some of the notable MNC tablet brands available in the India market in the high-end range. Moving forward, it is for sure that as a highly entrenched product category, tablets are going to play an important role in terms of enabling content delivery for India, from a device perspective.

With the introduction of the eSEC (embedded Security Enabled Stephen Bryant, C o m m u n i c a t i o n s ) Connexion service Telenor Connexion is taking an end-to-end approach to security in M2M solutions, ensuring that all possible“hacking”points in a connected service are addressed. The new eSEC managed service solution enables end-to-end encryption all the way from the M2M device through any connectivity channel to a security gateway. “At Telenor Connexion we pride ourselves on our proactive service awareness and the ability to help our customers get their offerings to market.
Now we are turning our eyes towards the total business case around security as an area where we can help our customers simplify their connectivity strategy and increase security levels”, says Stephen Bryant, CTO of Telenor Connexion. Having an end-toend security solution also means a “walled garden” where content, applications, payments and other services can securely be made available to open new revenue possibilities. To accomplish this there are four key criteria; CTO of Telenor banking grade security, lightweight encryption methods, open roadmap and manageability. All addressed in the eSEC managed service solution. “We believe it is time to look past today’s APN and VPN setup as the primary means of securing connectivity. With the eSEC solution we provide a managed service and support products which have a supported and maintained roadmap. As important as the technology, we provide a full managed security service providing alarms, reporting and 24/7 surveillance and service desk that is ready to act!”, Stephen Bryant continues.

Alex Huang, Managing Director, System Business Group, Asus India. Industry has witnessed tablets unveiling by various existing and well established brands as well as by lower tier vendors at entry level. As varied are the offerings by different vendors, the segment that they are targeting are equally divergent. Moving forward, we expect to see android tablets and low cost tablets entering the market and shaping up the market forces. Tablets in premium segments are seen more as a wholesome device for office & entertainment. In mass segments it is either more perceived as education, gaming limited entertainment. Rajesh Agarwal, Managing Director, Micromax Informatics Recently, there has been high adoption of tablets in the Indian market in enterprise, education, retail sector. Going forward, the trends will be in terms of the content that is provided by the product. It would be more focused on the software rather than the hardware. It will be all about VAS applications and the ability of the device to fulfil the need gap of people. Today’s young generation consists of restless heads who demands for technology at the tip of their fingers. They
need to be technologically equipped and demand to possess the latest innovations. With growing competition it is observed that no consumer is a brand loyalist. Their ultimate goal is to possess an innovation. They may tend to switch onto other brand if they come across a relevant invention. So the prime focus for bringing in devices is to provide the consumers with a product they will aspire to buy rather than just concentrating on the pricing strategy. The success in adoption of tablets will largely depend on product performance and availability of relevant content. Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO, Datawind We believe that in the next 24 months the tablet market would exceed the size of the computer market in India – i.e. 10 million units /year. The space is enormous. Due to huge income disparities, there is space for different players offering products at varied prices to participate. Major players who may not have entered the market as yet will also enter this market. We are proud of the fact that we have created a product category, which was missing. The needs of a segment of the population were being ignored which would be taken care of by this category of tablets. Sunil Lalvani, Director, Enterprise Sales, Research In Motion, India The tablet PC is a unique category that beautifully amalgamates the functions of a laptop and smartphone on an entirely new device, best known as the third screen. Tablet PCs give a good experience to users in terms of both work and leisure. One can download personal information while at the same time, get equal output from the device for workrelated functions. A lot of preference for the device is also driven as a result of this capability that comes with tablet PCs. In a country such as India, the uptake is also widely driven by various factors namely, price, tariffs and availability of relevant apps. While there are consumers who will go for competitive pricing and average technology, there will continue to be a great demand for tablets of global standards with cutting edge technology for the technology savvy category of users. From an Enterprise perspective the security and manageability features of the Tablet are key driving factors given that secure Corporate data cannot be compromised even on employee owned tablets.

Trends in Convergence
Towards Greener Past W
hile telecom segment as a whole is relatively energy-lean, telecom networks which power the telecom ecosystem of an array of devices including the smartphones, tablets etc are energy-driven and energy costs represent a huge opex item that is increasingly important as energy prices rise and energy efficiency continues to be in focus. The challenge for operators is to pursue growth in telecom networks, while ensuring the 2 percent of global emissions does not significantly increase over the coming years.Experts close to the industry strongly believe that this environmental challenge cannot be met in a static commercial or operating landscape. Hence, new eco-friendly technologies and applications need to be incorporated in the networks which will then drive growth in both mobile and fixed broadband data networks.

www.mobilityindia.com
In today’s scenario, day by day networks are expanding to serve more subscribers and increasing traffic per subscriber. From an environmental perspective, this means that while the absolute amount of energy consumed by telecom networks is growing – along with associated CO2e emissions – the carbon intensity of the network traffic is lower than the activities the traffic replaces. The goal then is to increase energy efficiency in driving additional traffic so the carbon intensity differential between that traffic and the activities it replaces is as great as possible. As telecom networks get bigger and bigger, the Indian telecom industry is a key power consumer with over 400,000 towers, each consuming between 1,000-3,000 watt-hours. However, given the unstable power situation, telecom towers are hugely dependent on being running with diesel resources and MOBILITY
Trends in Convergence
tures are estimated to consume over 2.5 billion litres of diesel annually. This bitter figure is acting as a black hole for operators as it is getting very difficult for them to gain anything out of this situation. On an average, energy cost currently account for 35 percent of total telecom operator costs. Moreover, as the number of towers grows, associated environmental concerns have also mounted. Recent studies undertaken by various telecom vendors and the government indicate that telecom towers alone produce over 550 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. Going green or eco-friendly has therefore become a situation necessity, rather than anything else for the telecom operator community. Especially, in a tight telecom scenario, where margins are going down because of continuous tariff MOBILITY
wars, denting the profitability of service providers, going green is the only option in front of the operators in order to gain solace. Operators are therefore exploring all possible options to reduce dependence on diesel and are opting for greener technologies. The government also seems all decked up to encourage change in the power usage pattern for the betterment of telecom industry. Due to the nature of networks, telecom operators need to employ a framework that not only includes metrics to minimize carbon intensity, but also caters to network effects: the most efficient network design draws together the maximum amount of traffic in the fewest nodes, given a set of constraints, including transmission costs, spectrum limitations, radio link budgets and/or optical limits. Each of the elements in an operator’s cost structure has an associated environmental impact. Traditionally, this impact has been given relatively little consideration by operators when making network investment decisions. Additionally, a methodology has not been in place for operators to understand cost and environmental dimensions simultaneously. There are many investment tradeoffs to be studied along the way, and the approach that allows these to be investigated in the most straightforward way is TCO. By linking CO2e and associated cost evolution estimates into the TCO framework, an operator has a powerful tool to use when considering alternative network designs and power-saving features, evaluating traffic enhancements and minimizing environmental impact while improving competitiveness. In addition to cost-effective operations, operators are also recognizing the need to respond to the climate change challenge by reducing the environmental impact of their operations. In the future, operators will need to find ways to balance investment decisionmaking so that it is based on both economic and environmental grounds. The approach can be referred to as TCO2, and it can help telecom players lower costs while simultaneously reducing their carbon footprint. Operators will need to make investment decisions in the long term that consider the total cost and total CO2e impacts. Telecom operators can use the TCO2 methodology in network operations to evaluate carbon emission and energy consumption savings from different www.mobilityindia.com
solutions and network scenarios. When an operator is building a network – or rolling out more capacity or coverage – there are choices and trade-offs to evaluate in designing and implementing the solution. When the issues primarily involve costs, then TCO is an effective framework to use when evaluating different options. The Green Way When we talk about going green, solar has so far emerged as the most preferred of renewable technologies on offer primarily because of the availability of abundant sunlight across the country. Other alternatives are also being adopted. Wind turbines for example, are particularly relevant in areas with significant wind velocities. Moreover, operators are also adopting solar-wind hybrid solutions, which help lower fossil fuel consumptions by up to 80 per cent. Base stations powered by such solutions offer economically viable alternatives since they lower both operating and maintenance expenditures. Global as well as Indian companies are also undertaking research and development activities for producing bio-fuels from renewable energy sources, such as agricultural waste and residues, to power existing diesel gensets. Other solutions like fuel cell systems are also being adopted. These help to replace batteries and DGs in urban areas. “Fuel cell” is a term encompassing a wide range of technologies that typically work by transforming the chemical energy of a fuel (usually hydrogen) directly into electrical energy. Fuel cells can generate power ranging from 1 watt (cellphone) to several megawatts (small factories). Hydrogen itself can be extracted in many different ways from different sources. Owing to the urgency of the present situation, all telecom operators as well as tower companies in India have started installing and experimenting with various alternative power solutions. Operators like Idea, Bharti Airtel, Reliance etc are already doing their bit to incorporate green element in their network of BTS. Vendors are also not leaving any stone unturned on this and focused companies like Gurgaon based Vihaan Networks are doing pioneering work to find greener and better solutions for the telecom industry. Moving forward, telecom operators will have no option but to go with green energy consumption in order to gain more from their existing networks. October 2012 | 21

Smart Devices Delivering M-Healthcare Driven by ease of use, SmartPhones and Tablets are fast becoming close friends of doctors in delivering M-Healthcare for their patients 24 | October 2012
I
n today’s technology driven scenario, healthcare providers face new and evolving demands from patients, to continuously look at bettering their technology intake and deliver best of the applications for their set of patients. And hence, successfully addressing this sea change in expectations requires a concurrent transformation in healthcare technologies and deep understanding of mobility friendly devices such as smartphones and tablets. Wireless technology, in particular,

holds the promise of enhancing the quality of patient care, helping providers control costs in creative ways and lessening the pounding headache of keeping up with the technological advancements. It all begins with the mobile device, and global vendors are working diligently to tempt healthcare providers with a broad— and sometimes bewildering— array of choices when it comes to delivering innovative applications. Change is the constant—with smartphones becoming more MOBILITY

powerful, personal monitors becoming more sophisticated, and a new generation of tablets bursting on the scene and threatening to upend laptops. Even traditional, push-to-talk devices are being enhanced with exciting new capabilities.
The Mobile Experience The healthcare sector has never been known for being an early adopter of information technology. However, wireless devices—along with wireless broadband data networks and mobile software applications—have to be recognized as

fundamental components in the quest to expand and improve patient care, control costs and comply with government and industry mandates. For some hospitals, the computer on wheels (COW) is as mobile as it gets— simply because no one is motivated to search for better alternatives. Often, a lack of funding or technology personnel serves as a key barrier to transitioning to wireless. Sometimes IT staffs are paralyzed at the thought of supporting more than one type of mobile device and therefore refuse to support anything. Data security and patient privacy are also concerns. Today’s healthcare providers, physician offices and hospitals have an array of mobile devices to choose from. Smartphones, wireless laptops and push-
in six major flavors. Today’s operating systems include Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS, RIM’s BlackBerry®, HP’s webOS, Nokia’s Symbian/MeeGo™, and Microsoft’s Windows® Phone 7 (successor to Windows Mobile 6.x). Despite some differences in approach, each OS sets the stage for intuitive, user-friendly devices and applications. Touch screens, increasingly powerful processors, GPS location awareness, crisp graphics and animation, rapid Web browsers, and accelerometers are just a few smartphone capabilities that help deliver a convenient user experience to healthcare providers. Smartphone-based mobile health applications range from drug and clinical references to diagnostic tools to real-time patient record keeping.

The Healthcare Agenda The segment of Healthcare is a fiercely competitive sector that is being buffeted by multiple forces, including: • Our still-struggling economy, with continued high unemployment and financial unease, making healthcare services more of a financial burden in certain patient segments. • Consumers becoming more educated and choosier about treatment and caregiver alternatives. Hence it becomes very important for healthcare providers to create better differentiators. • Physician alignment with hospitals, which remains a work-in-progress. • Ongoing margin pressures. • Aging patient populations, with a corresponding rise in chronic conditions. Patient Care: Delivering high-quality, easily accessible patient care—on both an in-patient and out-patient basis—is an ongoing balancing act. Consumers are looking for quality and value. They have done their homework, think they know the answers, and are frustrated with insurance plans. In the face of this educated customer, the healthcare industry has to compete and survive by demonstrating real value-add. The new healthcare value proposition to patients is equal parts high-quality medicine, affordability and convenient accessibility. Multiple expert providers are expected to work together to deliver seamless, coordinated medical services. Technology’s tangible benefits are easy to predict, but can be difficult to actually quantify. CIOs can find it challenging to put a hard, concrete number on staff productivity improvements, increased patient safety, cost-savings, faster response times, improved outcomes, more satisfied and involved patients, reduced medication errors, etc. In the face of cost increases and ongoing margin pressures, providers must manage expenses by constantly evaluating alternatives and improving efficiency across departments and groups. Specific examples that have found their home on the smartphone form factor include: • Mobile reference libraries— Caregivers can stay current on medical advances, advice and news by tapping into medical apps, such as anatomy references (ex: Netter’s Anatomy) and drug guides (ex: Davis’s Drug Guide for Nurses). • Diagnostic tools—This is a burgeoning category, including both prepackaged and customized solutions. Lab results can be delivered directly to a physician. Electrocardiogram results and guidance can be accessed. Patient vitals (for recovering patients or those with chronic conditions) can be monitored long distance using a combination of smartphones and sensors. Remote consults can take place with rural or distant patients and colleagues. • Patient record keeping—Electronic health records can be accessed via smartphone, allowing caregivers to diagnose and communicate
Tablets: Ruggedized, special-purpose, tablettype computers have been around since the 1980s; however, a slimmer, less expensive, more feature-packed version is now taking the mobile device industry by storm. These new iterations, launched by a growing list of top-tier vendors, have significant potential in the healthcare sector. Tablets can satisfy the clinician’s growing demand for information and data right at the point of care. Weighing about 1 pound, less than half an inch thick, and offering 7- to 10-inch touch screen displays, these devices are eminently portable, with the 7-inch models being compact enough to tote around in a lab coat pocket. With 1 GHz dual-core processors, they deliver the speed and performance that are absolutely crucial for medical applications. And high-resolution displays (1024 x 600 pixels) can provide clear, crisp views of medical images (X-rays, CT scans, etc.).
virtually anywhere, anytime, including at the point of care. Home healthcare providers can enter patient data once on site. • Worker monitoring—Home healthcare aide location and workflow can be monitored via GPS to ensure timely arrivals and departures and optimal productivity. Smartphones present certain strengths and weaknesses as a form factor in the healthcare field:
PRO CON BEST FIT • Inexpensive • Easy to carry in pocket • Decent-sized screens • Location awareness (with GPS) • Rapidly expanding portfolio of medical applications • Can be ruggedized with third party casing • Limited displays and lower processing power can result in incomplete or unclear information,

time-consuming paging through multiple screens • Potential security vulnerabilities • Easy to lose • Battery life less than 10–12 hours • Dual cameras (front and back) on certain models make these devices even more productive in three important ways: 1) By allowing caregivers to supplement patient records with valuable images of the current medical condition, 2) by providing an image that the caregiver can quickly share with his or her colleagues for feedback and collaboration purposes, and 3) by allowing videoconferencing—virtual consultations—with patients and other healthcare providers. Tablets also allow caregivers to share images and data directly with the patient, resulting in more interaction and engagement and, hopefully, a more satisfied healthcare customer. Tablet applications will focus on providing diagnostic imaging and video, quick access to educational and reference resources, and on-the-spot access to electronic patient records. In addition to the capabilities discussed, software vendors are challenged to leverage additional features such as pen input, GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope and multiple network connectivity options. Both custom and prepackaged applications will be common. Examples of native apps currently being developed for tablets include MRI viewers, mobile film readers and mobile medical calculators. Developers are still discovering the benefits of the tablet’s increased size. For example, tablets are large enough for easy addition of a biometric reader, which could single-handedly trump the need for other security protocols—thereby saving valuable clinician time and effort. Hence as we move ahead, smart devices such as smartphones and tablets are set to take the healthcare technology full speed ahead on the technology roadmap. MOBILITY

hen it comes to tablets the 7 inch display size is preferred most amongst customers today. This is simply because the bigger display unlocks many potential uses for the device while keeping it portable enough so as not to make it cumbersome. Today users can buy a tablet with bare minimum functionality and hardware specifications for as low as Rs 5,000 or even less, while with features the price can also go up to as much as Rs 30,000. This tablet is the first ever budget offering from Samsung as far as the tablet category goes. But even though the tablet comes at a bargain price it has enough muscle to glide through daily tasks with great ease. So here is the Galaxy Tab 2 P3100, and how it fairs in the real world. One would say that Samsung has
actually taken the older device, changed a few bits here and there, repacked it, and started selling it again in the market. Samsung had a challenge this time to create a cheaper yet equally functional tablet and it has managed brilliantly. Despite the price cut the build quality and finish of the device has not suffered at all. The device has a flush front with thick borders surrounding the display and on the upper side is the ear piece which makes communication easier but a little awkward due to the big size of the tablet. The display utilizes capacitive touch technology and therefore there is no recession in the screen bevel and the front of the device gets a flush and even finish. All the speaker and connectivity ports have been placed right at the bottom of the device so that its looks are not spoilt. Samsung uses a proprietary charging and data port so users will have to carry the cable with them at all times.

n the world of Bluetooth accessories, Plantronics like Jabra is a well known name and so far we have seen some pretty exciting products coming from this brand. This new Bluetooth headset, called as Voyager Pro UC, has some elements of the older Plantronics Voyager Bluetooth headset. Voyager Pro UC, as we said earlier, brings back all the nostalgia with an improvised behind-the-ear design. This mono Bluetooth headset comes with a non-retractable but adjustable swivel boom microphone that makes conversation easier and clearer. The headset has a big lumpy portion that holds the battery and the antennas while all other electronics are hidden behind the ear, balancing the headset evenly for comfort. The boom is constructed of hard plastic that makes it sturdy but lightweight. The whole headset weighs just about 17 grams which when coupled with the comfy behind ear design makes it a pleasure to leave on for the whole day. he connector between the earpiece and the rear part of the headset is quite made up of soft yet very strong rubber based polymer that does not pinch or even hurt the ear and adds grip to the headset as well. e now have Nokia's Bluetooth invention, the Play 360 speaker, with for review. Play 360 marks the use of NFC (Near Field Communication) in portable speakers for the first time. While the whole world debates on the proper use of NFC, Nokia fans should be happy that Nokia is utilising the technology in creating devices around it and is not just debating its potential. So let's get back to the Nokia Play 360 speakers that offer a choice of exciting colours as well as features. The best part is that if you get two of these you can connect them together and get a true stereo sound effect. Nokia is known for its simple yet appealing designs, which till now have been the biggest selling point for its devices. Same is the case with the new Nokia Play 360 speaker as well. The speaker is simple and yet it has so many minute and unique details. The design of the speaker is what gives it the name '360'. Play 360 has a top mounted speaker firing towards the roof to make the sound omni-directional. The base of the speaker has been constructed of sturdy impact resistant plastic. The pairing key is encircled with the power/connection indicator that glows blue while the device is connected. Just beneath it is the charging indicator that lights up while charging and turns off when charging completes. The back houses the charging port, power key and a 3.5 mm key used for connectivity with non Bluetooth supporting devices using wires.

dimax 3G wireless Router has been in the market for more than a year now, but still has some unique capabilities. Most of the operators offering 3G services in India are also offering routers, which have a 3G SIM slot. However, none of these routers offer the kind of features offered by Edimax 3G router (3G-6218n), especially the option to connect a wired broadband connection through an RJ45 jack. The router has a small box like design and is easily pocketable. There are three ports-one full USB port for a dongle, one RJ45 port to connect wired broadband, and a mini USB port for recharging the battery. The quality of the router is decent and it has a glossy white finish. There are three switches on the device-a power switch, WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) switch and a LAN/WAN switch. This is the only router that offers the option of connecting a dongle as well as wired broadband through an RJ45 jack. The router also has an 1880 mAh battery that supports it for more than four hours of use. The router uses green Ethernet technology, which basically means it consumes energy based on the load, thus reducing power consumption.
