The Mysterious Chess Board

The Mysterious Chess board It was Sunday. Soph and Kate were playing their favourite game, Chess. “I’m winning,” cheered Soph. “Oh you always win,” moaned Kate. “Do you want to play again?” Asked Soph “Ok,” said Kate. When they had got all their pieces back on the board, Soph reached out to move her pawn, but it moved itself. She turned to Kate. “I know you’re trying to win but it doesn’t mean you can cheat.” “I’m not cheating” said Kate. “I never touched your ….” But just then Kate’s pawn moved too! They tried to ignore it. Then it happened again. “I’m going to tell mum,” moaned Soph. Kate kicked the Chess board on the floor. “Silly chess board,” she huffed. Just then the floor started shaking. “Aaaaaahhhhh…help!” She cried. But it was too late. Soph came hurrying back in. “Kate, Mum says you have to…” But Kate had gone. Soph looked at the chess board on the floor. "Kaaaaaaaate” shouted Soph. Just then…. ZAP! Soph found Kate in a massive room. It had a black and white board in the middle, made up of enormous squares that a human could stand in. “It’s just like our chessboard,” shouted Soph. “Yes, so we must have to play our way across,” said Kate. “Let’s go!” they both cheered. Kate and Soph ran over to the giant chess board. The proud kings and tall queens looked much scarier close-up. Their fierce eyes looked at them nastily. “Right, what shall we do first?” asked Kate. “We are black”, explained Soph, “so we just have to wait until white takes its go”. Kate and Soph waited nervously for white to take its move. One of the opposite side’s pieces moved slowly two spaces forward. Then, it stayed very still. Kate went nervously up to the

pawn at the end. Soph followed. They both placed their shaking hands on the pawn. “One, two, three!” they both shouted as they heaved their pawn forward. It was very heavy. They gave each other a high-five then went back into position. Minutes went by, then Soph’s and Kate’s smiles turned to frowns. Their hearts slowly sank as they saw the white queen snatch their knight and throw it to the side, like a goal keeper throwing a ball. It smashed into thousands of tiny pieces. Kate and Soph took three strides back as they gasped at what happened. They both tried not to let it put them off.

Hours went by and more pieces smashed. But this was nothing compared to what happened when the white queen stopped and shouted a word that Soph and Kate hoped she would never say ….. “CHECK!” Soph and Kate stared. “What are we going to do?” asked Kate. Just then Soph saw something. She looked very carefully at the bishop. She grinned. “That’s it!” she cried. She rushed over. She put her hands on the bishop. They moved it – “CHECK MATE!” Then they found themselves at home looking shocked at an ordinary chess board!
