THERAPEUTIC THERAPEUTIC RECREATION

Montgomery County Recreation Aquatics offers American Red Cross courses for potential aquatic professionals. Participants must meet all prerequisites and attend and complete all sessions. Blended learning courses require completion of an online component and in-person sessions. This course will train you to be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer. Certifications are valid for two years. Attendance is required at all sessions and online component must be completed in order to be certified. Students must be 15 years old by the last day of the course. Proof of age is required at the first class. This course includes a pre-course check. The first date listed is the pre-course. You must pass the pre-course to continue. The pre-course consists of: 1. 300 meter swim (front crawl or breaststroke). 2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only legs. 3. Swim 20 yards (free or breast), surface dive to 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to starting position, exit the water on your own in under 1 minute, 40 seconds. Enrollment in this course does not guarentee certification. Students must pass written and physical exams. Cost for the course is $135.

Blended Lifeguard Training

Swim Lessons Indoor courses meet for six 30-minute sessions. Fees range from $58 to $67 depending on the level and number of participants.

Swim Lesson registration will begin on May 10 at 6:30 a.m. for residents. Please note the following: Parents: in order to assist us in offering a quality program for your child, you may not remain at the class unless it is otherwise stated in the description. Experience has shown that children are easily distracted. Observation is allowed from designated areas only. At some facilities, clear observation may not be possible. Observation is not possible at the MLK pool. Class fee covers only the lessons and no other use of the facility. Participants may enter the locker rooms ten minutes before the start of class. Lesson questions should be directed to the facility where you wish to enroll. For a detailed list of skills taught in each class, inquire at the pool where you will be taking lessons.

Read course descriptions carefully and select the level at which the student has mastered all prerequisite skills. Review the guidelines for placement in Swim Classes on the following page. If you are unsure of the student’s level or ability, evaluations are available at each indoor facility for one hour after the last lesson every Saturday and Sunday. All other times are by appointment. Registrations will not be accepted after the first lesson. There are no transfers. If you have enrolled in the incorrect level, you will be withdrawn and withdrawal fees will apply.

Aquatics Lesson Weather Policy When an indoor lesson is canceled due to inclement weather, a practice pass will be given to each participant at the end of the session. Practice passes can be used for admission to a recreational swim session at any Montgomery County Recreation aquatic center. Practice passes expire six months from the date of issue and are valid for one adult and one child. When two or more lessons are canceled due to inclement weather, a pro-rated credit will be issued to the payer’s ActiveMONTGOMERY account at the end of the session. The credit issued will be for the cost of the canceled lesson(s). The credit can be applied to future aquatics lessons or any other Montgomery County Recreation program.

Outdoor lessons are scheduled for eight sessions to allow for inclement weather cancellations. There are no makeups or refunds due to weather related closings and delays for lessons at outdoor pools. Please check each pool's listings for lesson schedule changes due to facility conflicts. Lessons will be held on all other days the facility is open.

Class Requirements: On the first day of class, students must be able to have one adult participant per child and wear swim diapers or tight-fitting waterproof pants under their suit if not potty-trained.

Class Objectives: Children will learn basic water-adjustment skills and begin to master simple swimming skills (submerging, floating, kicking and arm stroking). Parents will gain the knowledge and skills to work comfortably with their child in the water.

Beginner (Ages 4-6) Youth (Ages 7-13) Adult (Ages 14+) Level 1

Class Requirements: On the first day of class, students must be able to function well in a group setting without parents.

Class Objectives: Students learn water-adjustment skills. Students will be introduced to water entry, front and back floating, kicking, bobbing, blowing bubbles and arm strokes.

Beginner (Ages 4-6) Youth (Ages 7-13) Adult (Ages 14+) Level 2

Class Requirements: On the first day of class, students must be able to enter water, front and back float without support, kick, blow bubbles and do arm strokes. Parents do not accompany children.

Class Objectives: Students are already water adjusted. Students must be able to submerge for three seconds and float on their front and back without support. Students will be introduced to basic swimming skills: front and back glides, kicking, arm strokes on front and back and rhythmic breathing.

Beginner (Ages 4-6) Youth (Ages 7-13) Adult (Ages 14+) Level 3

Class Requirements: On the first day of class, students must be able to use basic swimming skills including front and back glides, kicking, arm strokes on front and back and rhythmic breathing. Parents do not accompany children.

Class Objectives: Students can already swim a combined stroke on the front and back, using a kick and arm stroke for a minimum of five yards. Students will be introduced to back crawl, elementary backstroke kick, treading water and rhythmic breathing. Students will also work on improving their front crawl.

Beginner (Ages 4-6) Youth (Ages 7-13) Adult (Ages 14+) Level 4

Class Requirements: On the first day of class, students must be able to swim a coordinated front crawl for 15 yards and swim back crawl for 5 yards. Students should be comfortable in deep water.

Class Objectives: Students can already swim a coordinated front crawl for 15 yards (across the width of the pool), back crawl for 5 yards and are comfortable in deep water. Students will be introduced to elementary backstroke and breaststroke. Students will also work on perfecting their front crawl, back crawl and treading water.

Advanced Youth (Ages 7-13) Adult (Ages 14+) Level 5

Class Requirements: On the first day of class, students must be able to demonstrate a proficient front crawl (freestyle) and backstroke, and be comfortable in deep water.

Class Objectives: Students can swim one pool length of front and back crawl, tread water and dive into and swim in deep water. Students will begin learning sidestroke and fine-tune breaststroke. Students will also work on refining all previous strokes.

Advanced Youth (Ages 7-13) Adult (Ages 14+) Level 6

Class Requirements: On the first day of class, students must be proficient in all previous strokes (front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke).

The museum, located in North Bethesda on the property where Josiah Henson was once enslaved, interprets Henson’s inspirational life story, and educates visitors about the history of slavery in Montgomery County and ongoing struggles for racial equity and justice. After my first visit to the completed museum I found it so moving that I came back a few days later to spend more time studying the exhibits and thinking about Henson and his life. Josiah Henson Museum & Park Maryland’s newest museum of African American history!

The NEW Josiah Henson Museum & Park in North Bethesda, Maryland, commemorates the life of Reverend Josiah Henson (1789–1883). He was renowned as an Underground Railroad hero, abolitionist and author. Reverend Henson’s autobiography helped inspire the fictional antislavery novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe.

The museum’s exhibits and programs celebrate the challenging and inspiring life of Reverend Henson, educate visitors about enslavement in Maryland, and promote an appreciation of the African American experience of Montgomery County.

Testing the Limits: Adventures in ZonePushing Speaker Series This lecture will be offered as a live online webinar with audience Q&A throughout the presentation. How Climate Change is Afecting Our Temperate Eastern Forest Speaker Series

Bio: Angelica Patterson, Master Science Educator, Black Rock Forest As we face global historical declines in large-scale agriculture, timber harvesting and wildfires, the northeastern US forests are becoming one of the fastest growing sources of removing carbon dioxide from our atmosphere. However, increasing temperatures are leading to tree migration and altering the makeup of our forests. In this lecture, you'll learn how global warming is creating a disadvantage for our native trees and negatively affecting the ability of northeastern forests to store carbon and ultimately protect us from climate change. Bio: Angelica Patterson is the Master Science Educator at Black Rock Forest. She received her B.S. degree in Natural Resources from Cornell University and her M.A. and M.Phil degrees from Columbia University, where she is currently completing her doctoral degree in plant ecophysiology. Patterson is a strong advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the environmental sciences and has served on various committee and working groups. She has served as a speaker at several US universities, environmental organizations, and K-12 institutions, and has recently been profiled in The Guardian, The Forestry Service, and the National Environmental Education Foundation. Our built landscapes reflect social ethics and values that guide our response to reviving wildness in and outside the urban environment. How can we recognize and develop compassion for other species? What role do native plants have in opening us to the perspective of others? What happens to our society when we advocate for the equality and freedom of a silent majority? Through ecology, psychology, landscape design, horticulture, philosophy, social science, and over 100 inspiring images, we'll explore the rich complexity of rethinking pretty and what a garden means in the anthropocene. Want to watch wildlife or just enjoy a peaceful paddle? Then join us for a leisurely tour of Little Seneca Lake. We could see beaver, herons, maybe even a bald eagle. Flying Squirrels

Maryland Flying Squirrels are abundant, cute, and active year-round, but few see them in the wild because they are active at night - nocturnal. BNC has established a squirrel feeding station so some of our flying squirrels can be seen up close by our visitors. Summer Saunters: North Branch Trail

We have dreamed of summer through snow, sleet and slush. Now that it has permanently arrived, we shall exult in it, no matter the heat, the humidity, or buggy harassment. Our Friday hikes begin an hour earlier than usual to take advantage of the morning coolness and we will walk 2 - 3.5 miles on natural surface or paved trails along creeks that release breaths of fresh air. Water quality is an important factor in the health of humans and animals alike. Living in the Big Woods

Way back before your great, great, great, great grandmother's time, Maryland was predominantly forested. People lived in the forest and found there most of the resources they needed to survive. During each of these four sessions we'll explore and experience life as it was practiced by pioneers like the Laura Ingalls Wilder family and the Algonquian Native Americans. From trying to start a fire with a bow drill, to making butter or twisting bark into twine, we'll come to understand how our ancestors relied on the forest environment and wove their lives into it. Dusk Hike Along the Canal

The frenzy of daytime activity begins to slow down at dusk when birds retreat to leafy branches and crickets begin to ring out their calls. Parent and Child Golf

Golf is a great game for kids to start early, and you will have a great time learning together. With the help of a Montgomery County Golf Academy Certified Instructor, you and your child (age 7-14) will learn the basics of golf, including proper stance, grip, chipping, putting, driving, and more. If you are already a golfer, the instructor will work with you at your level to help you improve your game. Fee covers one child and one adult; register the child only. Practice cards are valid until the start date of the next lesson series. An electronic practice card good for public skate admissions and skate rental to practice.

If you register after June 17, you must register in person at the facility. No new enrollments are added after the second week of class.

Helmets and gloves are highly recommended for safety.

Please read course descriptions carefully and select courses that match the skater’s ability and experience. At the end of each class series, the skater will receive an evaluation form recommending the class that should be taken in the future.

Arrive at the rink 30 minutes early for your first lesson, and 15 - 20 minutes early for subsequent lessons to have time to get skates on properly.

•

If you see a class you like, register! Classes may be canceled or combined if a minimum enrollment is not met.

•

Pick up your skates at the skate exchange. Ask for one size smaller than your sneaker size. You’ll have better balance and protection against injuries.

•

If you wish to practice on the same day as your lesson, please see the public skating schedules before signing up

This fee does not apply to Montgomery Parks activities. • CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS - Make checks and money orders payable to ActiveMONTGOMERY. - Checks and money orders must include name, address, and telephone number. If your check is returned unpaid, your account will be debited for the original check amount, and electronically or via paper for the state’s maximum allowable service fee. Payment by check constitutes authorization of these transactions. You may revoke your authorization by calling 800-666-5222, ext. 2 to arrange payment for any outstanding checks and service fees due. - Please allow two weeks to receive a refund by check. • CREDIT CARDS: Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover are accepted.
