WELCOME TO FALL 2020 As we head into fall, our battle to stop COVID–19 continues. There is no doubt that this is one of the most challenging periods of our nation’s history. Regardless of how much this crisis has altered our way of life, it is more important than ever that we exercise for mental, social and physical health.

That is why Montgomery County Recreation has developed a fall program that will be safe and enjoyable. The fall program will include activities that are outdoors or virtual, so participants feel comfortable and safe. In addition, the County’s aquatic centers will be open with appropriate health and safety measures in place.
Health/Wellness
In this year’s fall guide, you will find activities that are much like the ones you have always enjoyed. There are experiences people of all ages can use to stay active throughout the fall.
Martial Arts
We are in a different time—and we have to find new and different ways to spend our recreational free time. This fall, Montgomery County Recreation will make it easy for you to keep busy, have fun—and do it while staying safe.

Children’s Days “Good Garden Vibes Children’s Programs
Fall Children’s Programs Special Note
and Wellness”
We’ve made some changes to our annual Children’s Day, so kids and families can enjoy the event safely. It’s more important than ever to get outside and experience the “Good Garden Vibes and Wellness” that comes from being near plants. Small groups will rotate through outdoor stations where the children will meet “Sunny Blossom” for a song and fun physical exercise, make an upcycled key windchime, pot-a-plant and practice some garden yoga and mindfulness! Families or groups of 8 including adult must register. Since this is a limited attendance event, we suggest limited adult supervision (i.e. one parent instead of two accompanying child or group of children). We are sorry, walk-ins will not be accepted so everyone can keep a safe physical distance.
We look forward to welcoming you back for our fall programs both online and in person. Special cleaning measures are in place to provide a safe environment for everyone. For indoor activities, group size will be adjusted, and tables will be spaced according to current CDC guidelines. In order to seat guests at tables comfortably, we have changed the registration process so you may register your family members or close friends to be seated together at a table for four or eight (depending on the program). As we need to be mindful of the maximum group size, we suggest limiting adult supervision to one adult accompanying a child. We are sorry, walk-ins will not be accepted so everyone can keep a safe physical distance. About Jimi Blake
Our food system works for some in our nation but fails too many people of color, a problem that has only been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. In this lecture, Duron offers a vision of a healthy and just food system. Sharing the importance of applying an equity lens to our current system, he will diagnose the problems and challenges, identify areas ready for change, and determine ways that we can work together to build a better and more fair system for everyone. Duron will share from his personal experience working in urban agriculture and local food systems as he helps define what it means to build a racially equitable food system—from field to farm to fork—and lay out the necessary steps toward achieving that goal.
Jimi trained in the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin as a horticulturist and was subsequently appointed Head Gardener at Airfield House in Dundrum, Dublin. Jimi is a Gardening Consultant, Planting Designer, and International Lecturer giving talks and presentations all over the world.
About Duron Chavis Duron Chavis started his career in community advocacy working with the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of VA. While there he founded the highly acclaimed Happily Natural Day festival, a weekend long experience that focuses on cultural awareness, health, wellness and social change. In 2009 Duron launched the Richmond Noir Market, a Saturday pop-up farmer’s market targeting low-income communities located in what the USDA has designated as food deserts in Richmond, VA. In 2012 he developed McDonough Community Garden and began transforming green spaces throughout the Richmond Region into urban gardens, farms, orchards, and vineyards. He served as one of 40 community facilitators for dialogues on concentrated poverty throughout the Richmond Region on behalf of Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities,

Transforming a humble flower into a dramatic artwork starts from the choice of an angle that creates dramatic contrast, intricate perspective, and the flowing light that captures a viewer’s eye. In this workshop, Heeyoung will share her methods of observing and analyzing the specimen in order to maximize the interplay of light and shadow. She will share composition techniques that help develop quick drawing skills that eliminate unnecessary repetition while maximizing detail and accuracy. Dark colors are often challenging to achieve as they become muddy looking or uneven when too many layers are applied.
