Don’t care about what’s trending or what’s “in”just focus on what makes you happy.”Says Neelam Hakeem. Here’s our fun interview with her on discovering Islam, her rap career and modest fashion:
W
hat kind of family did you grow up in? We know that your life has changed after your mother's illness... Can you tell us about your childhood and early teens? I grew up in Seattle Washington with my parents and my two little sisters. My family actually practiced Christianity religiously before we converted to Islam when I turned 12 years old. We were standard middle class family until my parents separated in my early teens. Later we moved to Los Angeles California and we’ve been here ever since. Going to high school in LA was a culture shock for me, but LA felt like home. You picked the name Neelam Hakeem when you were 12; you had a different name... One day, your father came and told you that he is no longer a Christian and he is a Muslim now. We'd like to hear the story behind that… My fathers story is a lot similar to the story of Malcolm X. An African-American man who sought knowledge of his past and his history and then made the change to connect back to his roots. He didn’t want to force any religion on us he wanted us to research for self and make a decision for ourselves which is something I always appreciated. After doing
my own research that’s when I decided to embrace Islam. In 2007, you decided to embrace the hijabi style and you were 21 back then... How did you come up with this decision, what encouraged you? I’ve actually only been wearing the hijab going on three years. On Muslim woman’s day I was going through the hashtag and all I saw was beautiful Muslim women and girls showcasing their modesty in such an amazing way. I became completely inspired to do the same in that moment. I had to fall in love with modesty for myself because I believe a woman should have the choice and not be forced to do anything and on that day I chose. Is there any difference being a Muslim in America compared to other countries? I believe there is a complete difference being a Muslim in America compared to other countries especially Muslim countries. When you’re in a Muslim country you’re with people who believe the way you do and understand your cultural practices and you’re not the oddball out. Also other people don’t control the narrative of your religion of what and how you believe. You’re the minority instead of the majority. However, SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2019 •

I believe something really positive about being an American Muslim is you have more of a diverse and inclusive mindset because you’re forced to be that way and I believe that is a beautiful way to be instead of narrow minded. How did you get involved with music? I posted my first rap piece on my Instagram page and it was re-posted by Diddy and The Shaderoom and many others which cause my followers to grow significantly. My second rap
piece Diddy and The Shaderoom posted it again and Diddy reached out to me personally to work on other endeavors. My next big rap piece was re-posted by Will Smith, Eryka Badu, Worldstar Hiphop and so many more! This one went completely viral growing my following immensely which made record labels and companies like Vogue, BET, Essence etc reach out to me and put me more on the path to pursuing music. It’s been the greatest journey so far. How did you decide to be a rapper? Is it hard to work and earn money in this field as a Muslim? After receiving so many accolades on my rap pieces that I posted on my page it made me decide to pursue being a rapper. It is hard for me to work in this field as a Muslim woman because I am pretty much carving away for myself that doesn’t exist. I making my own lane and I’m quite different from the norm so there’s always difficulty in doing anything that’s different. Do you have that tough skin and keep going no matter what. What do you mention about in your songs; how do you come up with those lyrics, what inspires you? Everything I rap about comes from experiences or things that I’m observing that’s happening in the world. I believe the music should reflect the time that were in so I try to do that at all times. I’m inspired by every event that happens honestly. Has being a mother changed you? Does motherhood affect your lyrics? Being a mother has definitely changed me. There’s an inevitable thing that happens to a woman when you bring life into the world. Your priorities and how you feel about everything virtually changes. It does affect my lyrics because my daughter wants to hear my songs she wants to sing my songs and I don’t to cringe when I hear her quoting me. In 2017, your Instagram page completely changed... How did you get involved with fashion? like I said before I was inspired or

Muslim woman’s day so I decided that I would switch up my style and pretty much reinvent myself. I thought that if I can motivate just one person the way that those women and girls motivated me but that would be an amazing thing. The amount of the DMs and messages that I’ve got from girls who watch my journey and how they told me how I inspired them literally can bring me to tears every time. As a rapper, is it hard to find modest clothes and tailor it to your style? For me personally it’s not hard to find modest clothing thanks to Brands like Modanisa and so many others. Getting inspiration from other Muslim women and seeing where they shop it’s a beautiful Modest Fashion community that feeds and helps everyone in my opinion. Also I love making things work things that may not technically be considered Modest Fashion but but the way I style it comes out in a really dope way. How do you describe your style? My style is very random because it always depends on my mood or the occasion. I honestly switch it up so often I really couldn’t even label myself LOL but I would say in my opinion I like to keep it dope. You say that nobody should tell a woman what to wear... Is there any way to fight back with those who dictate? It’s important that women support women. Just because a woman doesn’t dress modestly or isn’t Muslim doesn’t mean she can’t stand in support of a Muslim women who chooses to dress modestly. When there is a band like wearing burkinis in places like France all women should stand up in support for those women’s rights. Also, just be yourself. Your authentic beautiful self, regardless of what anyone says. Don’t care about what’s trending or what’s “in” just focus on what makes you happy.

fter a long night without eating, your kids need energy and they shouldn’t skip breakfast, the first meal of the day. Breakfast helps building better muscle functions and keeps your kids awake. Also, children who have breakfast regularly are very strong against obesity. You can try out foods with your kids to find out what they like; organic honey, molasses, eggs with cold cut veggies, cheese sandwiches, veggie pancakes or oatmeal, fruits and milk can be a great start. Are you trying hard to make your kid eat an egg every morning? All you need is creativity to make your children eat an egg; present it to your kids in different forms. You can make smiley face pancakes

If your kids don’t stock up energy with the right kind of foods, they are more likely to have some snacks. The most critical junk foods are the ones with sugar and chocolate! These snacks are the main factors for child obesity. To get your kids away from these junk food you can make homemade chocolate by using molasses, tahina and cocoa and prepare them some healthy cakes and deserts with organic ingredients. Eating 4 to 5 healthy fruit and veggies is very important for your kid’s digestive system. They need fiber and pomace for their metabolism. You need to put at least one fresh and well washed fruit or veggie in your kid’s lunch box. Dried fruits like dried apricots, raisins, dried figs, prunes and blueberries will boost you kids energy during breaks.

hanks to its wide traveling database and content Trip Advisor’s users have picked the top 25 landmarks of Earth. Sheik Zayed Mosque is in the top 3 on the list. The mosque had place in the “Trip Advisor’s Top 25 landmarks” list twice before in 2016 and 2017. “A wonder of modern times” Sheik Zayed Mosque was open to public in 2007. Most of the materials used in its construction came from Turkey, New Zealand, Germany and many more countries. The mosque has room for 40 thousand people. It is built by architect Yousef Abdelky in 1988. The mosque is a combination of Turkish, Arabic, North African, Iran and Indian Islamic architecture. It has 82 domes, 1048 pillars and 4 minarets in total. The mosque is one of the most instagrammed landmarks and its surrounded by porches and pools. Each of these porches have two pillars and the pillar heads have persimmon engravings. These 82 domes are all in different sizes and their design is inspired by Badshahi Mosque in Pakistan. The lines in their design reflect the Mughal era. The pillars in the main hall which is veiled by 3 domes are engraved with precious stones and gold. Three big chandeliers embellished with precious stones are hanging down from these domes.The chandelier in the middle is considered as the biggest chandelier of the world. It is 15 meters high and weighs 10 tons. The floor is covered with the biggest hand made woven carpet. This hand made carpet designed by Ali Khaliqi is woven by 1200 women in 2 years and it is 5 thousand 627 centare. The kiblah wall behind the mihrab has the engravings of “99 names of Allah” in 24 carat gold.
