“WHAT I NEEDED WAS BELIEF, BELIEVING IN MYSELF” Hatice Kahraman, the painter of flowers, talks about how she navigated her way through mathematics to arts and how her life has changed after she explored painting. You studied mathematics at first; then you found the artist within yourself. We’re curious as to how this selfdiscovery started... I was born in Hatay. I grew up in a conservative family. My father has always been my role model since my childhood. I have always been impressed by his work and work discipline. I reflected this on my own life without realizing it. I was a hardworking kid at school. After graduating from Istanbul University, the Department of Mathematics, I got my second degree from Mimar Sinan University, department of Traditional Turkish Arts. I still
pursue my graduate studies in the same university and department. My path to becoming a painter was not based on a specific time frame, situation, or decision-making moment. Perhaps it was late for me to realize my talent, but in my inner world, even when I was a little kid, there was an ongoing process of observing, experiencing, and wondering. When the time came, I was ready to get a real acquaintance with the brush and paint. What I needed was belief, believing in myself and changing the ways I memorized...

Modesty is an essential quality for her designs “Recently I like to wear simple things – not as complicated as they used to be. My designs also change with me.” Asiya Bareeva is a fashion designer who grew up in a Muslim family from Tatarstan. She decided to adopt a religious lifestyle after a trip to Mecca. She lives in Russia and looks at modest fashion from a different perspective with her nature friendly collections.

After finishing technical university for textiles, Bareeva first began designing in 2013. Since then, she’s been known for collections made from secondhand materials she gets from bazaars and her relatives. She started to use vintage fabrics as she has an eco-friendly standpoint. Her Islamic belief and its teachings of modesty are also present in her style and designs. She nicely layers all the clothes that she designs to fully cover the bodies of models. We had a pleasant interview with Asiya Bareeva, who is also creating ceramics to cleanse her soul these days:
Lately, aside from women’s clothing creations, you’re also making ceramic designs. When did you start working on ceramic and which object do you like to make most? My interest in pottery was born in the period when I kind of decided to have a little rest from clothes design and learn something new. And when I found myself in the clay - it was just beyond the happiness. This is definitely mine... And the first forms were so similar to the pieces of fabrics. Let’s say I’ve shifted my love to fabrics and textile in general to this clay and pottery. It may seem that clothes designing, and pottery are very different and can’t be related, but for me it’s the same journey and continuation of one and other. I think as a result I’m going to use these skills and knowledge together to make an object that will unite all these things.
How did you decide to embrace Islamic fashion? My will to make clothes is related to the period when I converted to Islam and started actually practicing it. At that point, I already had my designing degree and the first collection in my background, so the next works I’ve made were more and more suitable for covered women. As one of the Muslim fashion producer women around the world, can we say that you’re doing a difficult job? What is the hardest part of your job? The most difficult thing for me is definitely the communication and my search for teammates - people with

I am inspired by people I love, people who are close to me, their positive feelings and emotions and the way it is all affecting me. But if we are talking about an inspiration from the physical world, that will be traveling, new skills, SPRING 2021 •

Fashion&Art new materials, whether those are fabrics, beads, or woods or else. It can be whatever, but if I feel I can create / design something from it - it just makes me shine. Also, history and old objects inspire me a lot. I love old things and the past in general, for example, I’ve used my grandma’s embroideries in the design many times. Is it important to you that your designs are wearable? Or putting a certain artistic effort and its uniqueness are more important? If I can make my fantasy become a physical reality - I’m really enjoying it. Completely and without looking back! And it may sound strange, although there are some pieces that may seem to people something that belongs to the museum and they might think it can’t be a thing that one will wear, but no - there is always someone who wants to buy it and wear it. My clients are incredible people, I believe so. They also inspire me and kind of push me forward to make the whole process faster. They make me feel that every piece is needed, and every piece will find an owner, so therefore everything has a meaning. However, recently I prefer to make designs not so complicated, but simple, the reason is that recently I like to wear simple things too, so if I’m changing - my product changes too. What’s your biggest dream? My dream is not to let my eyes or let’s say designing sight/vision to just fade away, to always have something that makes me stand up and explore new things around and in myself. I want to have all possible skills and use them. Want to make this all grow into something bigger, not just clothes or not just pottery. My dream is to make all these things get “married” to each other, to unite into something new and different. Maybe furniture or other art objects... How would you define your own designs? What are the details that you care about and cannot give up? Honestly, I don’t like to give titles to things. It just all comes from the soul. I would never wish to start a work with a certain set intent or aforethought, that is unnatural to me. That’s really contradictory. So, in the end not even details of the design are that important, as the sincerity. This is the most important - not to drop off your honesty and your sincerity and remember an early version of yourself. Which designers do you follow and admire around the globe? Inspiration is not that direct. And the fact that I’m designing clothes, doesn’t mean that I should necessarily be inspired by other clothes designers. I don’t think it works this way; this feeling is not that obvious. More bright and rich images can be found in nature, fine art, and other types of art. Sometimes even one word heard from a person - can be an inspiration. 58

“Rohs was born out of my own needs. It was designed for self-assured, modest women who want to be stylish and modern but cannot get a hold of high fashion brands.” Gülsüm Elkhatroushi made a great debut with the brand Rohs. Modanisa Magazine caught up with her to chat about her brand’s story and details of the Rohs Spring-Summer 2021 collection. When and how did your passion for fashion start? I was instinctively very interested in clothes and dressing since childhood. Colors and patterns always drew my attention. For example, newspapers used to publish paper dolls and with separate clothes, also made of paper. My favorite thing was to cut those clothes and put them on babies. I never thought that I would be a fashion designer specifically or design clothes, but I’ve always been fascinated by fashion. Where does your inspiration come from? What requirements do you think are necessary to prepare a collection? Our first and foremost purpose is that it appeals to casual chic and comfortable style. Trend colors and good quality fabrics, of course, shape the collection. We try to prepare timeless pieces that make our customers feel comfortable. Nature itself is a source of inspiration for us if we look carefully to find it. Sometimes a butterfly or a flower inspires us. What is the story of Rohs? How did it get started? How would you describe a woman wearing Rohs? Rohs was born out of my own basic needs. It was designed for self70

assured women who love to dress modestly and want to be stylish and modern but cannot get a hold of high fashion brands. Our branding was done with the letters taken from my surname. Our goal to become a corporate and global brand has shaped Rohs. What awaits(is waiting us) us in the Rohs SpringSummer 2021 Season Collection? How many pieces, what fabrics and what kind of clothes does the collection consist of? Our 2021 collection was prepared with the theme “Return to Nature”. We have worked on a wide range of products in the collection where we focus on natural fabrics. We focused on viscose, modal, and cotton fabrics. Sports styles were also included in the collection, while keeping the Rohs characteristics. We have designed stylish and sports tracksuits, colorful dresses for hot summer, timeless pieces for our customers who like to dress in classic styles, and casual outfits for women in business life. In our knitwear groups, we wanted to reflect the feeling of dynamism that colors evoke. Our cotton and mercerized knitwear stand out in the spring capsule collection. We do not set a certain limit on our collections. We always keep our product range dynamic by creating capsule collections in line with the suggestions and requests of our customers. In short, we can always call it a new season in Rohs. Would you please share your plans for your brand with us? We are evaluating the intense demands of international customers. We have 6 projects that we are currently working on. Our investments continue in digital platforms. Our production capacity is increasing fast. Our production cooperation with international companies continues. As a Turkish brand, representing our country abroad in the best way possible is our greatest excitement.

ongratulations on your wedding! Your wedding coincided with the pandemic. What challenges did you face during this process and how did you overcome them? Thank you so much. We went through a psychologically challenging process. More precisely, it was a period that made our lives difficult as the pandemic and our wedding date coincided. When engagement, henna night, and weddings were banned at the very last moment, we started to search for a new date. A wedding organization requires much effort and patience when you consider wedding dress, groom’s suit, hairdresser, house, and household goods. It was quite exhausting to print the invitations repeatedly, to think about the possibility of causing coronavirus disease among the wedding attendees and thus who we could invite or not in this situation. I can say that we tried to remain patient, sensible, and calm as a solution to all these challenges. What would you recommend to the couples who will get married in these difficult days? I have only one piece of advice for couples to marry: Avoid hurting your future spouse, family, and friends because of this process and seek understanding from one another. These busy days might seem like never-ending, but they end eventually, and what remains will be your happy memories. You will step into happy days with your new family. You must be a little patience for this.

Engagement, henna night, wedding, photo shoot… What were the most joyful and challenging moments in this long and tiring process? Could you share a funny memory with us? Asking for the hand and engagement ceremonies were held together. The henna night was also a bit dull due to the restrictions. It was a small party with a few friends. My bachelorette party was the best part for me. We were able to do it before the bans were imposed. I can say that I eased the stress of the whole month on that night. We had a fun moment during the celebration ceremony we held in Zonguldak, Ereğli. Everything was going well, and the pandemic was yet to be mentioned. We prepared the meals at home for our guests at the engagement and were carrying packages to our other house to serve the guests. We left some of the packages in front of the door and took what we could get and went inside. When we got back, we had an interesting scene: The milkman of the neighborhood was feeding his cows with our food :)

I HAD MADE UP MY DECISION ON THE WEDDING DRESS MONTHS AGO. I ALWAYS HAD TWO MODELS IN MIND: I WANTED TO SEE MYSELF BOTH IN A FLIMSY, LIGHTLY FUN DRESS AND A SIMPLE AND NOBLE ONE

The wedding gown is white; that’s a norm. How about the engagement dress, what color did you prefer? I chose a pastel pink for my engagement party. I think pastel tones such as salmon and dusty rose or colors such as dark blue and brown are the perfect fits for the engagement. What do you think about the lace / embroidered masks that accompany the wedding dress? Have you used a special design mask? I mean, it looks good aesthetically pleasing, but I did not opt for it. A custom-made, plain fabric mask worked for me :) What did you pay attention to when choosing a wedding dress? What kind of wedding dress did you dream of? Did the result satisfy you? I had made up my decision on the dress months ago. I always had two models in mind: I wanted to see myself both in a flimsy, lightly fun dress and a simple and noble one. Thank goodness both happened! I had two ceremonies. I wore an elegant self-patterned wedding dress at my formal wedding. Nihan Peker made my dreams come true at the other wedding and photo shoot; I wore a gown decorated with three-dimensional flowers and a cape with a straight skirt and a floating cape. Everything was exactly the way I wanted it :) The accessories accompanying the wedding dress are also very important. Which accessories did you opt for? The dress I wore for the formal wedding was very calm. That’s why we used pearls on my head to liven up the wedding dress during the ceremony in Ereğli. In the second one, I preferred to wear a plain scarf. Since the wedding dress I wore was floral, I did not need a different accessory. The flowers in my wedding dress were enough anyway. I am sure you can give the most useful tip about the right shoes to complement the wedding dress... I chose two different pairs of shoes because both dresses reflected different characters. One part of me was saying that I should be tall in a wedding dress as I am 1.57. So, I opted for a comfortable, simple platform high heel. The other side of me was asking for a pair of shoes that had a story and was worthy of my wedding dress. That’s why I chose a light transparent shoe with lace details. Which one is the most important detail: the bride’s veil or the shoes? As I preferred a cape instead of a veil, I had a turban, and this may be the only thing I regret. Hijab style and veil should be a top priority. If necessary, you should arrange a fitting beforehand.
Where will you live after you get married? Was it difficult for you to live far away from your family? I had already been living away from my family for about 10 years. I have been in different cities for high school, university, and work. Since my wife is from Şile / Ağva, we are now from Istanbul:) Where did you spend your honeymoon? We rested for 5-6 days in a private villa. We were so tired at the wedding. Fortunately, we didn’t think of delaying our honeymoon to a later date. If we hadn’t done it then, I don’t know how we would have relieved our fatigue during this period. Lastly… Could you share your best moment of your wedding with us? My husband, Erdem shouting “Yes!” at our wedding excited me very much. It was beautiful but also a bit weird. The moment we got on the stage at the party we had with our friends was also fascinating for me. With Evgeny Grinko’s Carousel playing in the background, that moment when I was with the man I love, and our close friends felt like the first step into a new life. I wish I could relive that moment.
