“DECIDING WHAT TO WEAR FOR THE SHOW WAS REALLY HARD” Many people know Güzide Mertcan from a cooking game show called Masterchef Turkey. But Modanisa people know her as one of the founders of Minel Aşk. We’ve had a sweet chat with Güzide Mertcan about work, children, marriage and her wardrobe. You’ve probably talked about this many times but, when and how did you decide to participate in Masterchef Turkey? Masterchef was a cooking show that I’ve always loved and watched. Also, I have a passion for cooking and I wanted to see how far I can go in this amazing journey. You have 3 sweet children, a happy marriage and a very busy business life. How do you cope with this? I’m lucky that I have a wonderful husband. Especially for the kids, he’s a perfect role model dad. He always takes his time to answer every single of their questions in details. He sweeps the house when necessary. He can also make delicious “çiğ köfte”. As you see, the housework is actually pretty easy for me. In terms of business, I got my sister watching my back. When I’m not around, my sister makes me feel safe and when she’s there, I know 34

that everything’s okay. You can easily say that I’m very lucky in terms of business and housework. But, I must that sometimes I feel insufficient. As a mom, I always feel like that. I have accepted this feeling and learned to live with it. You are actually an aesthetician... Will you continue to do your job after Masterchef or are you going to change your career? Maybe, we can see you as a chef on your own restaurant. I have two projects that I want to do for years. The first one is to open up a clinic for women. The other one is opening a restaurant that puts children in the center. In our country, playgrounds for children are too small and neglected. Especially hygiene is very important; in winter, these playgrounds become breeding grounds for germs. As a mom with 3 children, my priority is to open up a restaurant focuses on kids and serves delicious and original dishes. People speculated a lot on the “fashion brand” you’ve created with your sister Tuğba Tokmak... What’s the story of “Minel Aşk”? How involved are you? 8-9 years ago, our journey has started with a small tailor shop in a back alley. There was an immense market demand back in the day. Yes, there was a demand but no supply. So, we bought a chunk of fabric and we sewed shirts. We sold those shirts and produced caped tunics in different colors. Social media was all about Facebook back in those days. thanks to our fabric and sewing quality, and special designs. The company was located in İzmir and I live in Istanbul, that’s why I’ve worked for introducing our brand in fashion fairs and expos at first. Now, our company has moved to Istanbul and I got busier. Was it hard for you to decide what to wear at the show? Can you describe your wardrobe to us? Deciding what to wear for the show was really hard. The studio was really hot. At the same time, I needed to be comfortable to compete properly. Moreover, I had the responsibility to maintain a proper hijabi look in front of the cameras. Finding styles that are suitable to all these conditions was really hard. Mostly, I used sweatshirts by my own brand; Shesea. How’s your relationship with you wardrobe? Which styles are essential for you?
Which colors do you like to wear? Unfortunately, I don’t really like shopping. I go shopping when I need something. Saggy trousers and sweaters are my wardrobe essentials. I’m in love with earth tones. Shades of brown, beige and gray are must-haves for me. Since it’s your job... Can you tell us about your makeup style? What are the essential products for your skin care? Wearing makeup is not so easy for me because of my face and eye shape. And cameras add more to it. It’s not the same as looking yourself in the mirror, to see yourself on a screen is very different. When you put on a light makeup, you look like ill; when you put on a heavy one, it’s like you’re wearing a mask. There’s a thin line there. I cleanse my skin every night. HOW DO I KEEP MY SKIN HYDRATED? Healthy skin requires regular skin cleansing and moisturizing regardless of age and gender. Rimelaşkına shares her secret formula. Hello everyone! I’m Hilal, most of you probably know me as Rimelaşkına. As someone who suffers from dry skin, I would like to talk about the importance of moisturizing the skin and how. Our skin is a very important organ covering the entire body. Hydrated skin is not only important to look beautiful, but it’s also important for our health. A skin with a balanced hydration level protects you from many diseases such as skin diseases, cracks and infections. Healthy skin requires regular skin cleansing and moisturizing regardless of age and gender. First things first, the root to a balanced skin hydration level starts from the inside. To achieve this you must drink at least 2,5litres of water. I must say: I too try to drink plenty of water to keep my skin hydrated. I cleanse my skin twice a day and each time I do, I use my moisturizing products. Even if my face has been bare all day, I continue to follow my care routine to protect
my skin from pollution and other environmental factors. My skin is fairly dry, hence why I opt for makeup removers that are also suitable for dry skin types. I also use a serum containing hyaluronic acid before the moisturizing cream to both enhance the effect of the moisturizer and strengthen my skin barrier. Then I use; what every young lady in her 20’s tend to avoid, and what’s generally neglected by everyone; under eye moisturising cream. What most people often forget is, these products are best used before you’re faced with skin problems, to minimise them, or at least delay their arrival by a couple more years. Finally, for soft lips I use my lip balm. Of course I moisturize my hands and body too! Lastly, I mustn’t forget to mention. UV rays dry the skin and cause wrinkles in the long term, the use of sunscreen creams during the summer and winter helps to maintain moisture balance by protecting the skin from harmful effects of the sun.

Aware of the situation, Modanisa donated Burkinis to the school for the young Muslim students, which certainly put a smile on each and every one of their faces. We spoke to the head of their swimming club and the Muslims students at the Canadian school.

LAST MONTH, we received an email from a
school in Canada. Greg Simmons, a teacher at the school, contacted us mentioning how they were in need of burkinis for the refugee Muslim students, so they too can participate in the school’s swimming club. They liked the styles here at Modanisa, and were wondering if they’d go on sale. Modanisa sent the burkinis as a gift; all the girls chose their favourite colours, tried them on and proudly showed them off to their friends. Now they’re extremely excited to join the swimming club. Our conversation about the Holy Heart of Mary Regional High School and refugee students in Canada with teacher Greg Simmons was delightful. Could you introduce your school to us? Our school is Holy Heart of Mary Regional High School. We are located in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. We have over 1000 students and we are the biggest high school in Newfoundland. How many of your students are refugees? For the past ten years, Holy Heart has welcomed an increasing number of students from refugee backgrounds. These students have come to us from countries all over the world, including Albania, Bosnia, Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Sudan, Tanzania, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and of course, most recently, from Syria. Currently there are about 70 students at Holy Heart who come from refugee backgrounds. Are Muslim refugee students experiencing difficulties in adapting to life in Canada and your school; how do you cope with this situation? Students from refugee backgrounds face many challenges when they come to Canada. Most do not know English. The culture, food and religion are very different. For most, the weather is colder than they are used to. In addition, many students from refugee backgrounds have gaps in their formal education, and some have experienced traumatic past events. All of these factors make adjusting to life and school in Canada quite challenging. Fortunately, there are services and programs available to help students from refugee backgrounds adjust to their new life in Canada. We have a settlement agency called the Association for New Canadians that assists students and their families from the moment they arrive. At Holy Heart High School, we offer English as a Second Language courses to help students develop their English language proficiency, as well as Literacy Enrichment
and Academic Readiness for Newcomers (LEARN) programming to help students develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in mainstream academic classes. We also try to create opportunities for these students to participate in fun group activities that contribute to their well-being and provide them with a sense of belonging. Some examples include indoor soccer, outings for different activities such as skiing and hiking, dance club, international club, after-school homework program, and now, our inclusive swim club. Are your Muslim students willing to join the swimming club? Yes, and they are very excited to do so. Especially the girls. Last year one of our fun group activities was an activity day at a local community center, which included swimming. Many of the Muslim girls who came that day were disappointed that they were not able to participate in the swimming because they did not have the appropriate swim wear. This led one particular student, Fatimah Alameeri, to come up with the idea of fundraising to purchase birkinis so that the Muslim girls could swim as well. Fatimah and her friends are so happy that this idea is now becoming a reality, thanks in large part to the generosity of the good people at Modanisa. How did you find out about Modanisa? We found out about Modanisa when searching for birkinis online. The girls liked the Modanisa birkinis much more than those that were available on other websites. So, we contacted Modanisa to inquire about a possible discount so that we could purchase what we needed without going over our limited budget. To our great surprise, Modanisa offered to send us twenty birkinis as a gift. We were blown away! This incredibly kind and generous gesture will allow us to expand our inclusive swim club to other schools and age groups. How did the students react to the burkinis that you’ve received? The girls were overjoyed. Fatimah was especially proud to see her idea finally come to fruition. All the girls were very excited to pick their favorite color and try on their birkinis and show them to their friends. They cannot wait to begin their swimming lessons, and they are looking forward to our school swimming day which is scheduled for early in the new year. An American muslim woman showed great effort and strength to bring ‘’World Hijab Day’’ to life by being the first to turn it into a celebration. Her intentions at first were to gather non hijabis to empathise the matter of wearing a hijab, for a day. There is a preconception of men who force women to wear the hijab, in some countries. Hijab Day is gradually becoming not just a day to empathise the hijab situation, but a day for hijabi women from all around the world to show their victory and claim the perception that wearing a hijab is a choice of their own. In the past years, many events have been held in our country within the scope of Hijab Day; among them were panels. In fact, I was a guest speaker at one of the panels. Reporters, designers, presenters and hijabi women from all around the world had gathered and we actually enjoyed and was happy to be all together in one place. A hijab does not intervene with anybodys’ success. Recently, the number of hijabi women who have incorporated different branches of visual arts, music and sports into their lives, has grown. Islamophobia should not be an obstacle for their success. This fear should be conquered and this unjustified matter should always be manifested. A hijab is not a result of fear, to wear it to suit your belief, your sense of style, it’s a choice! I would like to wish everyone a happy World Hijab Day and I hope it brings peace. 50
