Pocket vacations Unlike some countries in the world, the Philippines is an all-weather destination. No matter what time of year, you can always go out on an adventure and discover the country’s beauty. With more than 7,000 islands to choose from covering an area of about 300,000 square kilometers, that’s a lot of space to roam around. And though, monsoon season is now upon us, there is still the chance of taking pocket vacations, as a series of long weekend loom in the coming months. In this issue of Experience Travel & Living, we share a number of locations, some near, some far, that might serve as a guide on your travels. They are accessible by land, air and water—the mode of transport adds to the charm of your break. There are still a lot of hidden gems in Bohol, while Bataan gives you an up close view of the country’s past through architecture. And while parts of Mindanao might be facing unrest, there are areas where holidayers can seek refuge. If you feel like staying in Metro Manila, a number of properties offer

staycation packages that are convenient and budget-friendly. With amenities to rival accommodations abroad, our favorite hotels offer this service. One of our go-to addresses in Quezon City is Luxent Hotel, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary this July. Its posh interiors, spacious rooms, fine dining experience and impeccable service have guests raving. To meet guest demand, the hotel is in the middle of an expansion program that will see not just more rooms, but improved amenities and the same hospitality the brand is known for. Indeed, if there is one reason to vacation in the city, it would be to indulge in Luxent’s kind of luxury. If you are looking for some outbound adventure, we offer insightful stories on three popular Asian destinations: Mumbai, Sapporo and Chiang Mai. Each is unique in its culture, engaging in its attractions, and definitely worth the trip. For life but an occasion to see the world, learn about other people, and experience their culture.

Happiness in a meal Kitsho’s lunch sets are filling and flavorful By Edwin P. G alve z Pho t o s by Te d dy Pe laez
Great cooking, whether at home or in a restaurant, requires using only fresh, authentic and high-quality ingredients. It is pretty basic if you want to serve greattasting meals. But when your chef goes to the market daily for the day’s supplies, prepares basic items from scratch right in his kitchen, or have food flown in from a country where it is originally harvested or produced, then you are assured of a satisfyingly flavorful meal. Such was our experience when we tried the seven lunch sets offered at Kitsho Japanese Restaurant and Sake Bar at Hotel Jen Manila prepared by its owner and executive chef Mizumoto Masahiro, or chef Hiro, who has spent the last 10 years in Manila serving the cuisine he grew up with in Fukuoka. “Kitsho” means happiness in Japanese, and chef Hiro served us that in each set over some relaxing Zen meditation music. We had them served buffet-style for sharing and, surprisingly, their prices—ranging from P448 to P649.60—are very competitive for their generous servings. The seventh set, sashimi tempura gozen, has three kinds of sashimi and tempura items, and is priced at P1,097.60.
C h ef M iz umoto M asah iro of Kitsh o
You may choose from these: daily set (the main dish depends on what is available), kaisendon (assorted sashimi on steamed rice with sesame sauce and cold soba or buckwheat noodles and fruits), grilled fish (either mackerel or salmon), sautéed pork, sashimi (four kinds), tempura (shrimp, fish, squid, and vegetable), and sashimi tempura gozen. These are served with salad (except for kaisendon and tempura), rice, miso soup, chawanmushi (steamed egg custard with seafood, an appetizer that chef Hiro likens to taho) and fruits.

According to his “professor,” there is a science to eating Japanese. Chef Hiro says you start with fruits and proceed with salad, soup, appetizer, main dishes, and noodles. You also need to eat the hoba leaves that adorn your food because they are antibacterial, just like wasabi (used not just to add heat), especially when you take raw food. Kitsho’s “other” value-for-money lunch sets are six mini rice toppings (tuna sashimi, marinated tuna, pork katsu, shrimp tempura, chicken and cooked egg, and crabstick) with your choice of mini noodles (white or soba varieties), at P448 each. As Kitsho’s owner since October last year and six years as its executive chef, chef Hiro has been flexible with prices without compromising the high quality of food and service expected of a restaurant owned or run in a Shangri-La property.
Th e s autee d p o r k se t l u nc h
“We even have better ingredients here,” shares chef Hiro. His salmon is flown in from Norway, his rice, miso, and beef, among other ingredients, come from Japan, and he makes his own wasabi paste using a pricier powder but tastier, and even ice cream! Yes, you have to cap your lunch with vanilla (very creamy!), matcha green tea, black sesame, and even wasabi—I was told it’s the only one in the country, not so intense—ice cream flavors made by Kitsho’s own machine and leave with only happy tummies. Kitsho is located at the lobby of Hotel Jen Manila on Roxas Blvd., Manila. It is open daily for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and dinner from 6 to 10:30 p.m. It offers a buffet on weekends. For inquiries, visit www.kitsho.com.ph or its social media accounts, or call 795-8888.

Matt Mason to pursue European market Photos by Re njie T ol en t i n o
Matt Mason Furniture opened its second branch in Silang, Cavite recently, as it unveiled its 2017 collection and launched the 2017 issue of Modern Movables Magazine. Located along Aguinaldo Highway, the store marks the firm’s success as a purveyor of fine furnishing. “My vision for the collection was for something classic and that can seamlessly blend with nature,” said Matt Mason’s Mike Yu. “Natural elements, such as exposed wooden frames in sofas, provide a balance and effortless character to my furniture."

The event was graced by Filipino artists, namely Nikulas Lebajo, Lerma Julian and Owie Chiong, whose commissioned artworks provided accents to the furniture collection. Beautifully curated pieces from Pizzaro and Conmigo were also featured in the show. “It’s definitely surreal to be a part of this growing brand,” said Julian. “It never ceases to astonish. I look forward to seeing Matt Mason live up to its full potential.” The first Matt Mason Furniture showroom in Silang, Cavite, along the Tagaytay-Sta. Rosa Road, which opened in 2014, spearheaded the transformation of bespoke furnituremaking in the area. Despite being one step ahead of the local competition, Yu sees challenges for the Matt Mason furniture brand as it sets its sights on the international arena. “I think the biggest question now is how do we make unique designs that are also universally appealing? We know that even with positive feedback from our clients, we simply cannot rest on our laurels and become complacent. We must continually challenge ourselves for the brand to grow, evolve, and stay responsive to the demands of our market,” he explained. Matt Mason furniture sees itself expanding to Europe’s vibrant furniture capital of Copenhagen, Denmark. "Matt Mason is a local brand, but we are trying to make it global. With all our clients’ patronage and support, I certainly hope we’ll be able to make it in a few years’ time," he added.

Fruits abound in a tropical country like the Philippines. Some grow all-year long, such as bananas, while some are seasonal, available only during certain months of the year. But whether they are seasonal or thrive all year through, fruits are most bountiful during summertime. There’s something about the bright sunshine that nurtures tropical fruits and makes them burst with natural sweetness and flavor. Watermelon’s lycopene content is one of the highest among fresh produce, and the naturally occurring compound has known benefits to heart and bone health. Being a powerful antioxidant, lycopene also has anti-inflammatory properties and helps prevent prostate cancer. Watermelon also contains potassium, beta-carotene and the amino acid citrulline. The latter converts to the amino acid arginine. Both amino acids promote good blood flow, thus assuring one of good cardiovascular health and improved overall circulation.

Melon or Cantaloupe Undeniably a summer fruit, melon or cantaloupe is 90 percent water; thus, it does not just refresh but also keeps you properly hydrated. It is a great source of vitamins A and C. Regular consumption of cantaloupe reduces the risk of many lifestyle diseases, such as heart disease, obesity and diabetes; promotes healthy skin and hair; and increases energy. Cantaloupe contains the antioxidant zeaxanthin (which helps protect eyes from macular degeneration), fiber (which promotes good digestion), and potassium (which reduces the risk of stroke), among others. People usually enjoy it diced, on its own, or shredded and combined with water and sugar into a refreshing drink,

but it can also be made into different desserts and even appetizers.
Mango The Philippines has the sweetest and most delicious mangoes in the world, and this is the Carabao mango variety. Its sweetness is such that it can be eaten alone or made into a variety of desserts and baked goodies. It even goes into salads and dressings, and is made into refreshing shakes and smoothies. Even the unripe mango makes for a delightfully refreshing shake. Cut into strips, green mango served with bagoong (shrimp paste) is also a favorite street food. Low in cholesterol, saturated fat and sodium, mango is a good source of dietary fiber and vitamins A, B6 and C. It is a bit high in sugar, though, so take it easy.

Avocado Avocado season in the Philippines is from January to July, so it is readily available for a good part of the year. Great as a shake, ice cream and in other desserts, salads and dips, it is high in good fat. More than delicious, with its exotic taste that can go from sweet or savory, avocado is nutritious. It contains significant amounts of vitamins K, C, B5, B6 and E, folate and potassium, as well as small amounts of magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, zinc, phosphorus, and vitamins A, B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin) and B3 (Niacin). Low in carbohydrates and saturated fat, avocado does not contain cholesterol or sodium. Avocado (Wikipedia/Nsaum75)

Star apple The star apple, known locally as kaimito from its scientific name Chrysophyllum cainito, is a roundish berry with purplish-green skin and white, soft and milky jelly-like flesh with black seeds. It is sweet and nutty to the palate, and is often eaten as is—sliced in half, flesh with black seeds scooped out by the spoonful, then seed spit out. Rich in carbohydrates, vitamins C and B3, iron, dietary fiber and antioxidants, as well as protein, vitamins B1 and B2, and phosphorus, it has a wide range of local medicinal uses. It promotes digestive and bone health, assists in weight loss programs, helps control diabetes, and prevents

Sineguelas It goes by the scientific name Spondias purpurea and belongs to the cashew family. Native to the tropical regions of the Americas, sineguelas are also known as jocote or Spanish plum. The small, round fruit has a green skin that raw turns purplish red when ripe. Sour and tangy when raw, its flesh is soft and uniquely sweet when ripe. Often, people just wash the sineguelas, dip it in a little salt, and bite into it. Each fruit has a big seed at the center, which is discarded afterwards. This exotic fruit has plenty of antioxidants that make the skin glow. It is also packed with vitamin C, which keeps the immune system strong and healthy and protects it from illnesses.
Makopa Its scientific name is Syzygium samarangense, but it is locally called makopa. This pink, bell-shaped fruit originates from Southeast Asia and Oceania, and it goes by many names—Java apple, water apple and wax apple. It is a tropical fruit common in the Philippines Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan. While it has a pinkish skin, it has a white flesh. To eat it, just wash and bite into it. The Virtus awards make a mark in the tourism industry The Virtus Awards’ quest for creativity, innovation and excellence is now on its third year. The multi-category competition offers a unique platform among hotel sales and marketing professionals in the country to tell their stories of excellence and success that resonate well beyond the hotel and resort industry. It acknowledges customer and business-focused strategies as well as innovative and creative programs that bring about measurable results and return on investments to their properties. The Virtus Awards is designed to shift paradigms in hospitality excellence. The Virtus Awards was launched in 2015 by the Hotel Sales and Marketing Association (HSMA) in collaboration with industry stakeholders. management, catering, reservation, public relations and communications, and revenue management. The corporate award recognizes the most outstanding marketing campaign that is built around a single, unified theme. As the HSMA continues to grow, with 80 memberproperties to-date, “the Virtus Awards has propelled the HSMA into another level of advocacy and raised the bar in the delivery of its objective of motivating and encouraging excellence among its ranks.”, quips Ms. Rose Libongco, Chairperson of the Virtus Awards. Rose further adds that “through the annual competition, we hope to ignite the passion and drive of hotels and resorts through their all-important sales and marketing team to excite the market, deliver vigorous business, make hearts beat a little faster, and yes, shake our world.”

An inexpensive way to stay connected By A ns on Y u
Like many other travelers, my smartphone has become an indispensable part of my journeys. It is practically my personal concierge as I use it to get directions, translate signs, get tour details, hire taxis and, of course, take pictures and post them online. But one of the biggest concerns with smartphone use while abroad is the roaming fees. It could potentially run up to the thousands of pesos if one is not careful. This is why smart travelers have devised various ways to try and keep costs reasonable, from buying a local prepaid SIM card to renting a local Wi-Fi router. Recently though, I discovered another affordable way to stay connected. A Singaporean company has set up last year Flytpack.com. Aside from selling foreign SIM cards and Japan rail passes, it rents out Wi-Fi routers for Pinoy travelers to use on their smartphones and laptop while abroad. Rates depend on which country you are traveling to, plus a refundable deposit fee.
22
experiencetravelph.com // Vol. 4 No.2 // 2017
Fl ytpack’ s Wi-Fi router keeps you connected wh en travel ing abroad.
I decided to try it out on a recent trip to Thailand. At the time I went, the rates for Thailand was P180 a day. So, for a five-day trip, that amounts to just P900. Even with the P2,800 deposit fee, it was way cheaper than using my telecom’s roaming plan. What is even better is that there is no limit with regards to amount of data you can use. Though they did admit that, depending on the country, once it reaches a certain amount of data, say 1Gb, the speed of the router tends to slow down. Though they did offer to send the router kit to me via courier, I decided to save a few pesos and pick it up on my own. It came with its own adopter for charging and a cable. The staff assured me that every Wi-Fi router is in working order before it is sent out. Every unit is tested to make sure it doesn’t conk out while you are using it. In the unlikely event that something does go wrong, the staff assured me they will try to troubleshoot on their end.
Upon arriving in Bangkok, my friend and I typed in the password that was indicated on the router. Immediately we were both connected. According to Flytpack, it can handle as many as five devices at a time. We began using it to get in touch with our friend who was picking us up from the airport. For the next few days, the device worked nicely. It enabled us to stay connected with our friends, get information, translate words, and help us get taxis. Definitely a Flytpack kit will be part of my luggage from here on every time I travel abroad. For information, visit Flytpack.com, send an email to hello@flytpack.com, call (02) 810-9863 (from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.), or send a text message of Viber to 0926-0182272.

flu that would not go away, prompting her to stay longer. She started painting at her house, and when people came to visit, they suggested she meet some local artists. And as they say, the rest is history. From then on, she participated in 26 group exhibits and launched her solo exhibit. She believes that you should just do things out of your heart and soul, and enjoy. She gets inspiration from the many people she meets. She encourages people through her art and music that convey happiness and positivity. "My paintings are quite happy. There is some brightness in them. Even if you can feel that there are troubles in some paintings, there is always a silver lining on the cloud," she notes. While she gets inspiration from people, she also helps out by doing volunteer works and teaching art classes. "I provide music in exhibits or if somebody needs encouragement but does not have money, I still go and play. I also share a lot to artists who ask me how I do this and that," she says. A for a visual Visualidentity Identity manila 2018 2018 for MANILA At the 50th ADB (Asian Development Bank) Board of Governors Meeting – the prestigious annual forum for Asia’s financial industry and government sector – delegates from the Philippines were tasked to showcase the diverse beauty of the country to thousands of participants. Held at Pacifico Yokohama in Japan, the 4-day affair was not only dedicated to discussing the region’s economic and social development issues; It was an opportunity for Filipino government representatives and business leaders to invite potential investors to visit the Philippines. Manila, after all, is chosen to be the host country to the next ADB Board of Governors Meeting. Manila 2018: The 51st ADB Annual Meeting, will be one of the most noteworthy international assemblies scheduled to unfold next year. That is why the country has pulled out all the stops to make a distinctive impression and give participants a taste of what’s to come.
The Philippines’ booth setup at the Yokohama 2017 ADB Annual Meeting
If you look closer, the negative space between the people connecting reveals a second figure – the silhouette of the Sampaguita, the country’s national flower. Blooming ever so subtly in the middle of the image, it is a symbol of the beauty that awaits anyone who wants to visit the Philippine islands. To add a bespoke touch to the usual exhibit set up, a one-of-akind app was especially developed for the booth. Aptly called The Curated Itinerary Generator, the app operates through two touch screen panels where participants answer questions pertaining to their personality and preferences. The software then uses the information to customize ideal destinations and suggest activities for the individual. This allows him to experience the country in a most memorable way. These are only but a sample of what can be fully experienced in Manila next year. With all the creativity and ingenuity of its people, and the limitless adventures and possibilities that await curious visitors, a trip to the Philippines has never been more enticing. • oliviarepotente.com • hello@oliviarepotente.com • IG: studiooinc
Studio Olivia Repotente Inc, otherwise known as Studio O, was commissioned to ideate the visual identity for the event which was then applied to an experiential exhibit that highlights the country’s best sites, gastronomic finds and artistic treasures. Coming up with the iconic logo to be emblazoned on all event resources was a welcome challenge for the dynamic bunch. Their trademark dual imagery designs and clever concepts have, after all, found their way to the faces of the most recognizable brands and establishments in the metro. Inspired by the meeting’s theme “linking people and economies for inclusive development” the logo shows an image of people coming together and joining hands. “We wanted a simple yet striking image that represents the vision of a collective effort achieving a common goal of inclusive growth,” says Olivia Repotente, founding art director of Studio O.

"The concept of Y2 is taken from the yin and yang. This side of Makati Ave. is vibrant and busier, with lots of tourists coming in all the time. But here, we try to give our clients a more quiet and serene atmosphere," said Philippe Bartholomi, general manager of Y2 Residence Hotel. The yin and yang logo and the black-and-white color contrast designed by the team of Tessa Prieto Valdes and Tess Alindogan can be seen in many areas and items in the hotel. Bartholomi, a seasoned hotelier, said this hotel offers both short and extended stays for

It also has in all of its 182 rooms a fully equipped kitchen. Guests have the option to cook in their rooms, which is something guests can’t do in most hotels. Not to be missed is Pink Panda, its restaurant located at the lobby area. Bestsellers include babi guiling , a Balinese dish of roasted pork belly with peanut sauce and served on a fried bun, and salted egg prawns, an innovative take on shrimp tempura but with a dipping sauce of salted egg and milk custard

People who do not get adequate sleep over a period time could suffer from stroke, heart failure, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and other chronic illnesses. Likewise, people suffering from insomnia are likely to manifest symptoms of anxiety and depression, which can ultimately affect their performance and their relationships.

Reviving the art of traditional dye weaving A network of non-governmental organizations and community-based organizations in south and southeast Asia called Non-Timber Forest Products-Exchange Programme (NTFP-EP) has started working on The Indigo Project, which reaches out to indigenous populations in upland and rural communities in the Philippines and Indonesia. These artisans include members of Mangyan Alangan, Mangyan Hanunoo and Mangyan Iraya of Mindoro, Higaonon of Bukidnon, Palaw'anon and Tagbanua of Palawan, T'boli of South Cotabato, Maguindanao weavers, and those of Negros. The Indigo Project promotes the development and implementation of environmental and social standards in hand-woven textile production. It supports production and sourcing of environmental-friendly natural dyes and fibers, establishes eco-friendly product standards, and scales production of eco-textiles.
"We're not business people, we're more involved in community development. But all this technology helps drive the business," adds Camba.
CMCC, incidentally, is one of the social enterprises being supported by leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom.
As part of rehabilitation and recovery efforts in Aklan, Globe and CMCC have expanded the program to benefit more subsistence farmers and to take advantage of the vibrant weaving industry in the province. Globe, together with Ayala Foundation, has helped establish 14 indigo farms in Madalag and Kalibo directly benefitting over 200 families. It helped set up natural indigo dyepowdering facilities, not only in Aklan, but also in Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Zamboanga, Palawan and Bukidnon.
"When we started the Indigo Project, there were no takers. It was only Globe who really worked with us on this," says Benilda Camba, NTFP-EP Enterprise Development coordinator.
To know more about CMCC and its collection of products from skilled weavers and indigenous artisans around the Philippines, please visit www. cmcrafts.org.
In the Philippines, NTFP-EP partnered with Custom-Made Crafts Center (CMCC) as its integrated design and marketing arm to give project beneficiaries proper skills training that will allow them to combine modern technology with age-old practices.

New air routes jumpstart 2017 tourist arrivals Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo-Teo said improved connectivity has significantly helped boost international visitor arrivals, which immediately hit the 1.78-millionth mark in the first quarter of 2017. Teo noted that tourist influx hit a four-year high, with January registering the biggest volume at 631,639 arrivals and the biggest growth at 16.48 percent. Approximately 98 percent of these arrived via air, as the Department of Tourism (DOT) facilitated the opening of international air routes to gateways outside Metro Manila. For the first quarter of the year, 787,678 international airline seats have been added from major tourist-source markets to the Philippines, led by the mounting of new direct flights to the country’s secondary airports, from Chongqing, Wuhan and Chengdu to Cebu, and Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Jeju to Kalibo. Philippine Airlines, China Eastern, and Sichuan Airlines are utilizing A320, A321, and Boeing 737800 aircrafts for the aforementioned flights. “We encouraged more airlines to mount new flights to our primary and secondary airports to upgrade connectivity and accessibility to our emerging destinations all over the archipelago,” said Teo. For March 2017, Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the country’s primary entry port, posted 350,517 arrivals, followed by MactanCebu International Airport (MCIA) with 113,869, and Kalibo International Airport with 68,819. Clark International Airport and Francisco Bangoy International Airport of Davao rounded up the top five air gateways. The DOT recently secured the Best Destination Marketing Award of Routes Asia 2017, a testament to the agency’s initiative for “a more conducive environment for the continued growth of air connectivity,” Teo also disclosed. The department bested stiff competition from Auckland Tourism, Taiwan Tourism Board, Tourism Malaysia, and Maldives Tourism Promotions Board.

“Routes Asia Marketing Awards is the recognition of the best practices in the aviation industry and is considered as its Academy Awards or the Oscars. This award will open up more opportunities for our airports to reach out to Asia and other parts of the world,” the DOT secretary added. MCIA was “highly commended” for the four- to 20-million passenger category, while Boracay International Airport, previously known as Caticlan Airport, was shortlisted in the Under Four Million Passenger cluster. Talks between DOT, MCIA and UBM Ltd. London, the organizer of Routes Asia, also commenced as the country bids for the hosting of the Routes Asia 2019 in Cebu City. Last year’s Routes Asia was staged at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, and was attended by more than 1,000 foreign and local delegates from the aviation community, airports officials, aviation data suppliers, tourism authorities, and other stakeholders from the region and around the world. The DOT Route Development Group is scheduled to conduct familiarization tours for network developers and route planners and assist foreign carriers in securing permits to operate while continuing its marketing support to air carriers. Secretary Teo said that they are also “working with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the private sector for continuous major expansion of airport infrastructure.” DOTr’s hybrid public-private partnership (PPP) program plans five regional airports in Davao, Laguindingan, New Bohol (Panglao), Bacolod and Iloilo for huge facelifts. A newly renovated Puerto Princesa International Airport, now with almost two million passenger capacity per year, was recently inaugurated, while MCIA’s P17.5 billion PPP (public-private partnership) expansion is projected to be completed by 2018.

Despite her talent in the kitchen, her exposure led her to choose a career that was at the front of the house. She took on management training at the Westin and was offered a position with guest services. Even at the time, she already had a solid career track in mind, one that led her to rise above the ranks quite quickly. “I positioned myself in that I would be a manager in the next two years. In a five-star hotel, it would take me longer as I would have to go through the frontline and operations side. So, in order to achieve that, I chose to work in a four-star property, under the Century International Hotels group. That was about 21 or 22 years ago.”

Proud Filipina She says that she is very proud of Filipino workers, especially on a global scale. “We are highly skilled, we have the education, and we can communicate in English. Moreover, the Filipino always finds a way to get the job done. We make things happen, we always have ways and means. Maparaan tayo. We are hardworking and resourceful, our dedication, our passion, it is there.” She says that there are many women leaders in the hospitality industry, and it is very well suited to a woman’s nature to nurture. “I look at my colleagues, especially the millennials as my sisters or daughters. When she came back to the country, she realized how much has changed—with more hotel concepts setting up not only in Makati, but also in The Fort and in the bay area. There is also a rise in boutique hotels. She looks at this as a challenge that she is able to rise to. “At the Dusit Thani, we have a 44 percent return rate, which I would say is very high. We differentiate ourselves by our quality of service, which combines Thai hospitality and the Filipino’s genuine warmth. We are also refurbishing our facilities and rooms in order to offer our guests that relaxing experience that we are known for.” Of course, she is not surprised that the Philippines is becoming a popular destination. She herself marvels at the beauty of the country and cites Palawan and Bohol as her two favorite spots, particularly for diving. Most importantly, it is the people. She explains, “Our hospitality is genuine; our service is passionate and very personal. It is in our Filipino tradition and culture that go all out for our visitors. We have a lot of beautiful beaches, and nature’s beauty abounds, but it is the people who make the difference.”

Healing touch
For actress Patricia Javier, travel and beauty go hand-in-hand T e xt b y Ma. Gla iz a L e e P h otos b y Renj ie To l e n t in o
For actress Patricia Javier, there was only one reason why she would leave behind a thriving career in show business—and that is love. At the height of her popularity in 2004, Javier left the Philippines and started anew in the States after meeting and marrying her husband Robert Walcher, a chiropractic practitioner. "I felt it was the perfect timing. When I left the Philippines and stayed in America, I was already turning 30. I felt it was the right time to settle down and have kids. When I met Rob, we were both single. Right away, I found him attractive," shared Javier. On their second date, Rob took her to his clinic. That time, she had a recurring pain around her neck area. No matter how much she would go to a doctor for treatment, the pain would persist. Arriving at Rob's clinic, he told her what chiropractic is about, and how it would help her condition. "After he adjusted me using chiropractic, I knew that was the sign. Of course, anyone who thinks about her dream guy would wish for someone who would really care, someone you can trust and leave everything to, because you know you are in good hands. That's how I felt with Rob. I thought he could be a good father to my future children because he genuinely likes kids,' she said.

Believing in the healing touch Aside from her showbiz commitments, she is busy helping her husband run their chiropractic clinic, Dr. Rob Chiropractic Wellness Clinic, which is located at the corner of Tomas Morato Ave. and Scout Madriñan St., in front of Il Terrazo, in Quezon City. A chiropractor is a doctor who evaluates the condition of the spine and nervous system. "We locate misaligned vertebrae affecting the nerves, called subluxation, which can cause stress in the joints, leading to arthritis, and which can affect the nerves and where they are communicating, such as muscles, organs, the immune system, among others," shared Doc Rob, as he is now fondly called. Stress factors in everyday life, be it physical, emotional and chemical, accumulate in the spine and change the body structure, and, over time, create medical problems. When the nervous

system is not functioning well, the body would manifest symptoms as muscle tension, pain and injury, and medical conditions, such as asthma, digestion problems, etc. Walcher explained that a chiropractor doesn’t treat symptoms; he treats subluxation: "What does that mean? We locate misalignment, correct it with our hands, so that the nervous system and joints function the way they are supposed to, and then the body heals itself. We believe in the power that made the body heals the body." While each chiropractor has his own way of treating his patients, he believes it is "a way of health, a way of prevention. It should be a regular care for everyone, just like how you brush your teeth everyday to get rid of plaque. It is a way to combat daily stress. When I treat patients, I use my hands. I don't use machines. I think that is how chiropractic was intended to be. There is something about healing touch. I believe in the power of touch."
Setting priorities Even though their calendar can get busy, the couple still find time to bond with their kids by traveling. "We love traveling together,” Javier said. “I believe that every time we bring our children to a different place, it helps build their confidence. It makes them see real life. Traveling teaches them life experiences more than attending classes in schools. She advised parents to take their children to places, instead of buying them toys and gadgets. Travel while you are still young, she said: "I would tell my husband that we should travel now, while we still can. While we are still young, while we can still walk and spend time with our sons, we have to travel. We don't need to spend much to travel and enjoy a place. If you save enough, find an affordable hotel, choose the activities, anyone can travel," said Patricia. For weekend getaways, the Walchers would go to Subic or Batangas. Their recent travels include Puerto Galera, Boracay and Mactan, Cebu. She hopes that before the year ends, they would be able to travel to Palawan. On the other hand, her bucket list includes taking a selfie at the Taj Mahal in India: "I want to have a picture there. It is a place that symbolizes love." When asked how she keeps healthy while traveling, choosing wellness should be a priority. "Being healthy is a choice, even if you are in a vacation. If you always eat healthy, your body will know. If you eat unhealthy food, your body will tell you. Even if you are on vacation, do some physical activities. Run around the resort or do sit-ups after you wake up."

The value of great experience Word-of-mouth from happy guests marks Luxent Hotel’s fifth anniversary B y J o s ep h Cortes P ho tos b y Patric k U y
Businesswoman Imelda Padiernos looks forward to holidays and special occasions because it gives her a chance to bond with her family. Downtime with her kids gives her so much pleasure. That’s why every opportunity she gets, she checks in at Luxent Hotel along Timog Ave. in Quezon City for some private time with her loved ones. She had heard about the hotel before. That’s why when she chanced upon Luxent’s booth at a travel fair a few years ago, she didn’t hesitate to approach the sales staff to make inquiries. When Padiernos finally managed to stay for a night at

the hotel, she found it to be a good fit for her needs. For one, its rooms are much bigger than those at newer properties, and the amenities can compare with the five-star ones in Makati and the Manila Bay area that she is familiar with. The fact that her kids get special attention at the hotel is a big factor for her. She recalled that one time when her daughter had a little accident at the pool area, she was amazed that the staff was quick to respond to their needs, even sending a doctor to follow up on them afterwards. At Luxent Hotel, it is the complete guest experience that matters most.
‘Return-of-experience’ Luxent general manager Melanie SiyPagkalinawan said providing their clients with great service during their stay is of utmost importance for the property. “We do not only focus on ROI (return on investment), but more important is ROE (return of experience),” said Pagkalinawan. “The moment a guest comes into the hotel, the delightful guest-experience cycle begins. We also set the right expectations by updating accurate information on all channels where the guest is expected to book, greet them warmly on arrival, quicken the check-in process, be consistent in the way we treat every guest, and offer complimentary items during their stay. We also have a feedback process in place, and respond to every review and stay in touch with old guests.”

Since it opened in 2012, Luxent has become Quezon City’s only luxury hotel, serving a wide range of clients who value price, reputation, room quality and location. “The look and feel of the hotel continues to be a crucial consideration, but responsive employees and their ability to solve problems become more important. Apart from staycations, it is a regular venue for wedding receptions, debut and birthday celebrations, family and school reunions, corporate and government functions, such as launches, conferences and conventions, and a whole lot more. Whatever the occasion, the combined force of its sales, banquet, kitchen and housekeeping staff worktogether to make every occasion a successful one. Apart from its 117 guest rooms that are fitted with all the amenities you might need to feel at home, free wireless internet is also available for the duration of your stay. For those that need to be connected to the world 24/7, this service is a must. Continuing expansion As the hotel celebrates its fifth anniversary this July, Pagkalinawan said hotel regulars have something to look forward to. For one, work is ongoing to double the number of rooms with the completion of Phase II expansion at the back of the existing building. This would also mean a new lobby area to receive guests when they check in, as well as a bigger ballroom, a boardroom and more meeting rooms, a bigger pool and bar area, and an exclusive club floor and lounge.

Of late, foreign tourists have slowly spread the buzz about the town after a few diving enthusiasts discovered Anda’s clear waters. What they found was a treasure trove of rich marine wildlife. Some dub it as one of the best in the world, while some say it is simply a stunning location to witness vibrant underwater sea life. Because of this, hotels and restaurants have started to thrive around town, and one of the best ones is East Coast White Sand Beach Resort. It is one of those accommodations with reasonable room prices. The Cadapdapan Rice Terraces
Aside from the beach, Anda also brags of cave pools that are scattered around town. These pools are a source of fresh water for locals, and they have become tourist destinations for many. The most popular of these is Cabagnow Cave, an underground cave with a pool of so clear that visitors are prompted to jump into it for a swim over and over again. A 45-minute drive to the nearby town of Candijay brings you to Bohol’s laidback lifestyle with attractions for one to enjoy the simple life in the province.
The Boholano version of Sagada’s famous landmark is Cadapdapan Rice Terraces. Not only is it considered to be the rice granary of the Visayas, but it also provides a breathtaking view of Canumantad Waterfalls from its peak. A short hike down would take you to its foot. Waterfall chasers would surely be thrilled to know that this is the tallest falls on the island. At sixty meters, it rightfully deserves a visit to witness its grandeur. It flows to a river to provide locals with a source of cool, refreshing water.

Next to Can-umantad Falls is Canawa Cold Spring. Nobody has figured out where the water here comes from. Canawa comes from the term “kawa,” which means a vat. Legend has it that a couple lived in the area and farmed for a living. One time, severe drought struck, and their crops died one by one. The couple offered prayers and pleaded to the gods of the mountain for water, but the monkeys that lived there mocked them as they prayed. Eventually, they caught one of the monkeys and clothed it with a child’s dress. As the monkey continued to make fun of them, the woman started crying in laughter because of how the monkey looked. She cried and cried until her tears engulfed the place. But, as the lady cried, her tears also drowned her and her husband, their lives an offering to the spring, which is now a source of water for farmlands. If Loboc has its floating restaurants, Candijay does, too. The Candijay del Rio Floating Restaurant is just the same as in Loboc, offering sumptuous meals as you cruise the Candijay River. And when night finally comes, there is a special treat for the eyes along the river’s path. Firefly-watching at Candijay remains vivid in my mind ever since I first experienced it: a magical, surreal and ethereal experience rolled into one. The one-hour boat ride takes you to the trees where fireflies glow like disco balls at night. To complete your nature experience, the Binabaje Hills in Alicia town has trails that off-road bikers, hikers and runners have thrilled them to the optimum. Last February, the Second Mountain Bike Festival was held and organized by the town. The stamina of bikers and cyclists was tested under the heat of the sun, with an excellent view providing a plus. The contest winners told organizers that Binabaje Hills is one of the best off-road tracks for biking and running, and it should be promoted into the spotlight for future events, like marathons. Bohol will always surprise you. So many foreign tourists I’ve met while touring the island said that its destinations have always left them in awe. However, these are not the only places to see in Bohol. The new tourist areas in the northeast part of the island will also leave you breathless the same way the Chocolate Hills, the tarsiers and Loboc River make you feel once you’ve visited them.

Taking part in a heritage tour one fine weekend gave me a glimpse of the past: reliving age-old yet distinct Filipino heritage, while offering discerning visitors with a unique experience. The moment you enter the premises of Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan, you are transported back to 18th-century Philippines in the blink of an eye. The Filipino-Spanish influences are evident in the architectural pieces that have been transported from different parts of the country, reconstructed and restored in Bataan to create a heritage community that everyone can appreciate and enjoy.

What is unique about this resort is that you get to experience and stay at traditional houses that serve as hotel accommodation for tourists and guests who are seeking a meaningful staycation. Our group had the opportunity to stay in Casa San Miguel, the old home of an ilustrado family during the Spanish era. The Hotel de Oriente, which originally stood in Binondo, Manila, is believed to be the first hotel built in the country.

Sarangani's inland tribe and white-sand beaches Sarangani Province has a 230-kilometer coastline that bounds Sarangani Bay and Celebes Sea. This translates to fresh seafood and beaches. Our first stop here was Hacienda Don Juan Beach Resort in the Municipality of Glan. It is one of the recommended places to stay in, and is among the many resorts where one can experience Sarangani Bay up close. It was here where I got convinced that pristine white sand beaches are not exclusive to Boracay or other beach resorts in the Visayas or up north. Why go to a crowded island during April or May when you can sit back, relax and enjoy the fresh produce of Sarangani Bay? As we toured the Hacienda Don Juan ancestral home, we were briefed on the annual "SarBay" festival in Brgy. Gumasa, which is Glan's own beach festival that rivals LaBoracay and also happens on May.
There are a few resorts that offer diving activities in Sarangani. One of them is the Lemnulay Resort in Brgy. Maasim, which also has a stunning view of Sarangani Bay. In contrast to the beaches, head to Lamlifew Village located in the Municipality of Malungon to meet the B'laan tribe. Compared to other coastal tribes in the province, the B'laans are the only tribe that is based inland. Its men are land-tillers, and are out in the field during daytime doing farm work. This is why the women of the village are the ones who entertain guests and are tasked to teach children traditional B'laan songs, dances, cooking and weaving. According to one of the elders, many visitors thought that the B'laans are also part of the T'boli tribe, but they aren't. There are similarities in their clothing, native instruments and weaving methods. However, the designs in their traditional clothing and the B'laan language are different from the T'boli.

A side trip to General Santos Fishport You can go on a side trip to General Santos Fishport while in Sarangani even if you don't plan to buy any seafood. If you can't go to Tokyo's Tsukiji Market or haven't visited it yet, a trip to GenSan Fishport is a good experience. The ideal time to visit is early in the morning to see as much of the freshly caught fish and to avoid the crowd as well. The port is open to the public, but visitors are required to pay a minimal fee to enter the complex. They must also wear the proper attire—no skimpy clothes—and the required footwear that is provided at the administration office. To savor the catch of the day without having to cook it yourself, head to Tiongson Arcade, a row of fresh fish vendors and restaurants where you can choose from whatever fish or seafood is available and have it cooked any way you want. The region of SOCCSKSARGEN has a lot to offer, from its food to the warm hospitality of the locals, the region's cultural heritage and the environment. A three-day-two-night stay will only give you a taste of what southern Mindanao has to offer, yet meaningful enough to appreciate the Philippines even more.

Time-traveling in Mumbai This In d i an ci t y boa st s a h ybr id arc h i te ctu r al st yle from t h e m yri ad c ul t u re s th a t h a ve fou nd a h om e here T e x t and Ph otos by Ma r k Go
The streets of Mumbai cast a dizzying spell even to this third-world traveler used to seeing voluminous crowds rushing to and from various errands. It reminded me of our first stop in India, the city of Kolkata, where all noises came to us like cannon blasting from all directions: the relentless honking of automobiles, and the incessant yell from vendors, among dozens of other reverberations, all comprise a mixtape of the mother of all audible uproars. After Kolkata, we saw the same kind of overwhelming street scenes at Varanasi, before tapering off in New Delhi and unto the desert state of Rajasthan, where long stretches of desert and dry mountains offer space to its large population. Here in Mumbai, as what a Caucasian traveler described to us at the bus terminal in Jaisalmer, “You won’t see an empty space. Almost each spot is occupied by someone.” Of course, it was an exaggerated statement, but hearing the noise now, and almost getting lost in the sea of humanity on our way to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, while we try to reserve a train ticket to Kochi, we got what he meant.
The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is one Mumbai’s imposing structures. 76

Amid the multitude of humanity, an impressive set of buildings also crowd its streets in an eye-popping manner, especially for an architecture junkie like me. Leading the pack is the Gothic-Victorian design of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, which is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the center of Mumbai’s complex but effective railway system, ushering the boundless wave of commuters to and from other cities in India. A few steps outside the station, one is quickly dazzled by an array of Art Deco buildings that earned the city of Mumbai the distinction of being the second city—next to Miami—to have the most number of surviving Art Deco buildings in the world. The architectural visual feast doesn’t stop there, as Gothic, Victorian, Indo-Saracenic, modern and contemporary architectural styles blend charmingly with historical landmarks from the British colonial era standing beautifully behind the swarming sidewalks of the city. The wave of optimism that flourished at the turn of the 20th century and after the First World War attracted many local businessmen to set up residency here, and along came a rich fusion between traditional architectural styles and the decorative design emanating from the cities of Paris and London. Not long after, rows of lavish offices and glittering residential apartments started appearing and adorning the huge city blocks that earned the city’s Bombay Deco reference. While many of these buildings stand at the mercy of passing time, as characterized by the peeling paint, broken glass and unkempt façade, the character they express is hard to miss. I do hope that the Indian government would soon implement a citywide restoration program or it risks repeating the same mistakes we committed here in Manila of surrendering our city’s architectural heritage to modernity.

We pass by the stand-alone Art Deco Regal Cinema, which was constructed during the cinema boom of the 1930s. Currently showing the Bollywood box-office smash film “Queen” about a female traveler, it is one of the many movie houses from its era that still operates today. The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel situated near the Gateway of India is architectural marvel. Built in 1903, it retains the flavor of its visual elegance represented by the Florentine, Moorish and Oriental architectural styles.
lined with interesting hole-in-the-wall establishments sandwiching a lone Starbucks branch and unto another street filled with bazaar stalls, until we settled for a café serving local and Western breads. For an hour, we sat by the window as I observed the hectic pace at which the locals darted in and out of my sight. With the many old heritage structures standing broodingly in the background, I felt a throwback vibe to decades past, all thanks to the olden sentiment the classic architecture of Mumbai brings.
As the afternoon crowd started to thicken at the water’s edge of Mumbai Harbor, taking photographs of the Gateway, we inched closer until coming within a few meters of it. I lifted my head, and my eyes gazed at the sheer size of the magnificent Indo-Saracenic architecture that blended beautifully with Hindu and Muslim design influences. Often compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, it was built in 1911 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary.
Staying true to the diversity of Mumbai’s populace, the aesthetic of the city’s stellar architecture presents a glimpse into the quixotic footprint that thrived once upon a time in its now frenzied and crowded environment. The city where much of “Slumdog Millionaire” was filmed showed me that there is more to it than endless shanty towns, all of which are visible at each edifice, that up to this day battle the rigid curse of decay and abandonment in an attempt to preserve the city’s opulent heritage and storied past. Just before the night’s darkness totally bit off the remaining daylight, we flagged down an iconic Premier Padmini cab to cap our metaphoric time-travel through Mumbai’s architectural wonders.
I felt the cool breeze of the wind, and smell the aroma of curry it carried. I suddenly developed a desire for Indian food. My friend Aileen and I walked toward a street

Taste Treat your palate to the many flavors of the city, which boasts of fresh ingredients and rich, distinct flavors. Try its popular Genghis Khan mutton or soup curry and finish it by taking a sip of its famous Sapporo beer after a filling meal. Be a delightful guest by knowing basic restaurant etiquette. For self-service restaurants, make sure to throw away your used paper cups, plates, and food wrappers into the right garbage bin. If you booked a restaurant reservation, make sure to call in advance in the event of a cancellation of if you are running late for your schedule. Food establishments take careful consideration when booking guests and giving a heads-up shows respect for your hosts. When paying bills, bring your receipt to the cashier or ask for a copy of it if it hasn’t been provided beforehand. Tips are also not a custom in Japan so expressing your gratitude to the staff after an exceptional service is a good option.
Feel The city next door to nature, Sapporo is the perfect place for travelers who want some downtime and peace. The place is always bursting with the colors of the season, with its deep green forests during the summer and striking red and yellow greenery during fall season. Try mountain climbing at Maruyama, a designated National Natural Monument, which is mostly untouched virgin forest. You can choose from routes based on your stamina, and reach it by car, bus, or subway. If you’re going to drive, familiarize yourself with road signs for the city’s wildlife. Gas stations in Hokkaido can either be full-service or selfservice, some of which can close as early as 6PM especially if you are in rural areas. T RAV EL LUXE Searching for the Silver Temple We walked through the southern gate of the Old Town and strolled past a string of shops along Wualai Road. Afterwards, we found ourselves inside a temple complex that had colors reminiscent of autumn: monks in orange robes, a bit of brown and green from the trees, and several cool-colored temples. Searching for Wat Srisuphan, or the Silver

Temple, wasn’t too difficult, even when I only had a faint idea of what it looked like. It stood out beautifully, shimmering in the afternoon sun. I knew that it was what I was looking for. It was exciting to see the temple for the first time. My uncertainty added to the eagerness of the inner explorer within me. My first sight of the ubusot, or the ordination hall, gave me a feeling that I haven’t felt in any of the landmarks I had came across in Chiang Mai. We were told that the antiquated pillars and timber supports are the only parts that remain from the original construction. First constructed at the beginning of the 16th

Saint Augustine wrote, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” I’ve been traveling for several years now, and I’ve always thought that I’ve read the whole book. But my recent trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand has changed my thoughts on that. Chiang Mai looks like a place out of a movie, where quaint coffee shops abound, where traditional craft stalls are found in hidden alleyways, and where congregations of monks seem to appear at every turn. My visit to this town, courtesy of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (Philippines) and Thai Airways, made me forget that an entirely different world exists outside Chiang Mai’s ancient moat. Rather than follow our itinerary, we convinced our guide to venture away from the tourist crowd at Thapae Gate and search for a lesserknown and possibly more unique adventure.

everything in the temple was made with silver and aluminum. And past the ordination hall, one would be able to see more remnants of the original wat. Aside from that, the centuries-old sema stones, which serve as boundary markers for the sacred, praying areas in the temple, was carved with very intricate designs. I would later find out that the reason for the intricate ornamentation was because the abbot in charge of the construction decided to use local silversmiths to renovate the monastery. This is the main reason why it stood out: it utilized construction techniques that were beyond ordinary. When I went closer to the walls of the ubusot, I noticed that the designs included UFOs, and even comic-book illustrations! Another discovery that afternoon was the meaning of the Ganesha statue next to the ordination hall. The statue itself is very intricate and intriguing. I later found out that the character standing beneath the shade of an umbrella was actually a symbol for change from Hinduism to Buddhism in Thailand.

Putting my adventure to an end Like all adventures, my trip to the Silver Temple had to come to an end. Crossing into the unknown ancient city behind the moat made my trip to Wat Srisuphan to be one of the best and most unexpected experiences in my life as a traveler. Exploring the lesser known is surely rewarding, and every encounter was worth it. The best way to showcase a country's beautiful past is by presenting its artifacts and photographs and by promoting ancient structures that represent its most colorful eras. That’s exactly what I love about this city. Apart from good food, nice shopping spots and friendly people, we were able to appreciate Thailand's history and culture after visiting Chiang Mai’s famous tourist spots, especially Wat Srisuphan. As a traveler, I felt complete after a long day. I felt accomplished after finding out that there was more to the book that is the world, and that I had more pages to read, after all.
Wat Srisuphan is at 100 Wua Lai Road, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai, Chang Wat Chiang Mai. It is located to the south of the Old City, not far from the moat.
How to get there: Take a tuk-tuk or a songthaew to reach the Silver Temple. It is located on the same road where the Saturday Walking Street market is held. If going on foot, as soon as you pass through Chiang Mai Gate on the south end of the Old Town, walk down Wualai Road. At Soi 2, turn right and walk until the first left turn. The temple is about 120 meters down this lane. Wa t Srisup han combi n es par t s dat i n g b ac k t o t h e 16t h centu ry and re s torati on s m ade r ec en t l y .

For several millennia, woven products have been one of the defining representations of Filipinos. Weaving is a rich part of our heritage and despite modernization, there are still weaving communities that can be found all over the country. Local textiles crafted by indigenous communities are well known here and abroad for its elaborate and colorful design, as well as its durability. To promote local weaving tribes and their craftsmanship, Mode Devi presented a fashion show featuring designs of highly acclaimed fashion designer Renee Salud and Mindanaoan tribeswomen.

Held at Marco Polo Ortigas Manila, “Mindanao Tapestry: Neo Ethnic Fashion of renowned designer Renee Salud” showcased a combination of ethnicity and modernity through creative patterns and designs. The audience was in a psychedelic trance as top fashion models clad in vibrant and colorful gowns walked down the runway. Highlighted at the two-hour show were looks representing six regions. These were T’boli weaves, indigenous cross-stitches, Yakan weaves, tribal weaves of Bukidnon, royal garb of the Mandaya Tribe and Inuol ball gowns. Also featured in the show was one of the collections from the “Indigo Project,” sponsored by Globe Telecom. The Indigo Project aims to help indigenous tribes in producing world-class materials made of natural dye and fiber which can be marketed here and abroad. The Indigo Project collection featured in the fashion show consisted of locally weaved fabric dipped in indigo. This natural dye is highly favored by local weavers because it does not easily fade. The artistry of each fabric woven by tribeswomen and transformed into modern-day clothing by Renee Salud showed the massive potential of Filipino talent. The Mindanao tapestry has attracted locals and foreigners when Miss Universe candidates wore them at one of the pageant’s events last year. This opened up an opportunity for Mindanaoan tribeswomen to show their world-class designs. And now, the Mindanao Tapestry fashion show has opened more doors for local weavers. "We at the Department of Tourism take pride in Miss Universe candidates wearing Mindanao fabrics last January. Our efforts must not stop there for interests and appreciation of these worldclass fabrics. Thank you for giving sustainable livelihood for our tribal leaders and promoting for what Mindanao has to offer. I offer my warmest congratulations to Mama Renee Salud, to the organizers and designers, for putting together this very important event,” said DOT Secretary Wanda Teo in a message read by Undersecretary Kat de Castro.

Embassy of Hungary reopens in Manila By S uzette Jes s ic a
The Embassy of Hungary in the Philippines finally reopened its doors after a 21-year hiatus from the country. Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, opened the embassy, located at the DelRosario Law Center in Bonifacio Global City. The event coincided with a Hungary-Philippines Business Forum held that day at the same venue. A Hungarian Embassy was in existence in Manila from 1991 to 1995. During its absence, the Embassy of Hungary in Jakarta was accredited to the Philippines, where Honorary Consul-General of Hungary Alfonso S. Yuchengco III looked after the interests of Hungary and its citizens. The Embassy of Hungary in the Philippines is headed by Ambassador József Bencze, who previously served as Ambassador of Hungary to Skopje, Macedonia from 2011 to 2016 and Hungary’s National Chief of Police between 2007-2010. Ambassador Bencze presented his credentials to President Rodrigo Duterte on December 6, 2016.

We want to promote 'resort living' in this residential community since Laguna is known for its hot spring resorts," said Fatima Olivares-Vital, business unit head of Ovialand. Ovialand stays true to its commitment in giving Filipinos the chance not just to own an affordable home with premier qualities, but at the same time the chance to invest their hard-earned money by ensuring the increasing appreciation of the property values of their developments. Ovialand chose San Pablo City for its latest project as it recognizes CALABARZON (Region IV) as a resolute region that is enjoying aggressive growth and development. "Cities like San Pablo are experiencing strong economic activity. There is a new generation of successful businessmen, OFWs and professionals from the area that are seeking the premier lifestyle they deserve while they strive daily for success. That is the added value that we are giving them, aside from the value-for-money investment we are giving them, we also want to make sure that they can sit and relax while enjoying their wise investment" explains Fatima Olivares - Vital.

The Medical City introduces microwave ablation for cancer treatment
Dr. Jolly Jason Catibog, head of the Vascular and Interventional Radiology Section of TMC Radiology Department; Dr. Eileen Grace Tiu, Interventional Radiologist; Dr. Heidi Herminia C. Santos, Consultant-Director of the TMC Department of Radiology; Dr. Ramon Santos-Ocampo, Interventional Radiologist; Dr. Manesh Tajeda, a specialist in Interventional Radiology and Interventional Neuroradiology at Raffles Hospital, Singapore; TMC Senior Vice President for Medical Services Group Dr. Eugenio Jose F. Ramos, and Dr. Vanessa De Villa, Consultant-Director of the Center for Liver Disease Management and Transplantation, with the Microwave Ablation machine.
Premier health institution The Medical City (TMC) introduces Mircowave Ablation (MWA), a new technology that destroys tumors using heat generated by microwave energy. While some tumors can be removed surgically, some are inoperable and must be treated by alternative means. One such method is image-guided tumor ablation which refers to a group of treatment modalities that are important tools in the treatment of a wide range of tumors throughout the body. Although most widely recognized in the treatment of hepatic and renal malignancies, the role of thermal ablation has expanded to include lesions of the lung, breast, prostate, bone, as well as to other organs. Its clinical applications also continue to increase. TMC is the first in the Philippines to offer MWA. The MWA machine was acquired by TMC in January 2017. To date, TMC has done several MWA cases for liver, lung and kidney cancers. MWA is a form of thermal ablation that uses electromagnetic waves in the microwave energy spectrum to produce tissue-heating effects. It is similar to radiofrequency ablation (RFA) but it has some potential advantages over RFA. In MWA, the heating process is active, which produces higher temperatures than the passive heating of RFA and should allow for more complete thermal ablation in a shorter period of time. The advantages of MWA over other ablative techniques also include the ability to treat larger tumors, faster procedure time, expanded treatment area including areas close to major arteries and veins, shorter hospital stay and lower recurrence rates.
MWA is applicable to patients who are inoperable due to age, poor physique, complications, or tumor’s adhesion or location; those who are not willing to do conventional surgery; those who are found not suitable to receive operation in intraoperative exploration; and patients with metastatic or recurrent cancer. The launch of TMC's Microwave Ablation machine dubbed "Plug and Play: A User-Friendly Approach to Tumor Ablation" was held on recently at the Augusto Barcelon auditorium of The Medical City Main in Ortigas, Pasig City. Guest speaker Dr. Manesh Tajeda, a specialist in Interventional Radiology and Interventional Neuroradiology at Raffles Hospital, Singapore, discussed the current status of MWA in Singapore and in Asia. Dr. Heidi Herminia C. Santos, Consultant-Director of the TMC Department of Radiology, delivered the opening remarks while Interventional Radiologist Dr. Ramon Santos-Ocampo tackled the first MWA cases in the Philippines. Dr. Ma. Vanessa De Villa, ConsultantDirector of the Center for Liver Disease Management and Transplantation, gave the closing remarks. Dr. De Villa said MWA is a welcome addition to the armamentarium of The Medical City Liver Center in treating liver diseases. Majority of the MWA procedures done at TMC were for liver tumors. After the launch, Dr. Jolly Jason Catibog, head of the Vascular and Interventional Radiology Section of TMC Radiology Department, performed the MWA procedure to a patient with liver tumor at the CT Suite, with Dr. Taneja and Dr. Santos-Ocampo as proctors. Ask your doctor or call the Center for Liver Disease Management and Transplantation at 9881000 ext. 6506 for inquiries. experiencetravelph.com // Vol. 4 No.2 // 2017

Minute Burger
looks to more years of success
M inute Burg er 35th annivers ary l og o
When Minute Burger celebrated its 35th anniversary, it celebrated with a banquet where executives, franchisees and employees looked back at 35 years of events that have now become part of its history, its struggles and success. In the late ’80s, as fast-food brands sprouted, the company was aggressive in its expansion nationwide, having a strong presence in provinces and municipalities with little competition. However, it struggled to stay afloat in the ’90s as the market grew smaller. Branches that were underperforming, including its first outlet, closed shop. Minute Burger’s Odie dela Cruz discusses future plans of the company.
By the starts of 2000, Minute Burger regained its foothold of the market as it opened new stores to franchisees. Its Buy One, Take One pricing captured the market’s fancy, while its Big Time product line launched in 2012 cemented its newly found popularity. And it continues to be an active presence in the burger market. At 35, this 24/7 burger brand is coming to its own in the crowded market of food franchises. Right now, the plan is to raise its inventory to 430 stores nationwide to 500, a milestone for a brand that is a true survivor in the local food franchise industry.
