The phrase “Back to regular programming” could not be more appropriate for Go Hotels. After serving as a quarantine hotel, Go Hotels has now returned to its pre-pandemic regular operations. FAMOUS DIVE SITES FOR BEGINNERS IN FREEDIVING AND SCUBA DIVING: 1. Buddha (at Dive7000)-The Buddha is for beginners and also every new freediver to reach. This is the closest freediving site to the jump-off point. It is eight meters deep during high tide and six to seven meters during low tide. Some coaches do night dive in the Buddha spot too. 2. Famous Turtle Biboy - Biboy is a young hawksbill sea turtle wandering the waters of Batangas. He is a lot of many things to divers and he gives so much- joy, calmness, elegance. According to Rustique Rue, Biboy is the most fun turtle around the area because he is also exploring the water with curiosity and the darling of divers as he encourages them to be more patient. Monte Carlo – This is located in front of Monte Carlo Dive Resort where you can explore the following underwater sites: Scooter and Motorcycle (four to six meters deep), Toilet (five to eight meters deep), Two Boats (eight to 10 meters deep), Cross (15 to 18 meters deep) and Volkswagen. Suggested areas for beginners. 4. The Hashtag at Aiyanar – Suggested for beginners (four meters deep) 5. Twin Rocks – This could be reached via boat dive. Approximately 20 to 30 minutes travel time. A diving location where strong current towards the twin rock occurrs and where the beauty of live corals must be seen and experienced. Suggested areas for intermediate and advance dive.

6. VistaMar- Dine in at VistaMar Table and Chairs (four to six meters deep) Suggested for beginners. 7. Sepoc Island – live coral gardens on the other side and wide range of white sands (underwater) - Reachable via boat dive 20 to 30 minutes. 8. Area 51 – Favorite site of majority of freedivers for basic diving training course where they could learn introduction of scuba diving. This is the perfect site for night dive. 9. The Cathedral and Castle in front of Ocean Camp – This is 15 to 20 meters deep. Suggested for immediate to advance diver.

ACCOMODATION AND TRAINING: Where to stay and take a course 1. Pier Uno Dive Resort is a family owned resort. It started as a rest house for the Crisostomo family and was finally opened to the public in November 2005. The resort amenities include an outdoor pool and Jacuzzi, dining hall, where all meals are provided, on-site dive training by certified SDI dive instructors and dive masters and a dive shop where guests rent dive equipment. The resort is situated in Anilao, Batangas.

Anilao, Batangas is two to three hours away from the busy streets of Metro Manila via the newly constructed skyway. It is a popular place for divers, and snorkelers all year round. Pier Uno Dive Resort is accredited by the Department of Tourism as a two-star resort and is accredited by the Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving. It is also an accredited centre of SDI and SSI. Other diving organizations like PADI and CMAS are welcome. 2. Ocean Camp is situated at Sitio Punta, Bagalangit, Mabini, Batangas, has newly opened tropical villas with registered

divers for both scuba and free diving. It is owned by Fredierick Galo and Shekinah Armentia. Its ameneties include duplex native rooms, dining room, kitchen, comfort rooms and shower areas. Ocean Camp is a recreational business service that aims to share diving experiences, affordable accommodation, good food, and pleasurable moments. 3. Diving Angels Diving Angels instructors are Soo Jin Lee and Allan Mark Jones while their dive master and underwater photographer is Sandra May D. Lee. If you want to learn how to dive, take up a course at Diving Angels. The instructors there will make sure that divers will experience and appreciate the beauty of the underworld. They also offer competitively priced packages. 4.. Sea Diver PH Owner : Sea Diver PH is owned by Cerys Mesa, Hazel Caraan and Liz Florentino. It is located in Mabini. The main goal of Sea Diver PH is to introduce freediving and scuba diving to those who are willing to explore the underwater world. It is also their advocacy to clean every site that they visit.

CLEAN UP DIVE ADVOCACY The coastal and ocean clean-up is a pilot project of Women of Global Change Foundation founded by Dame Shellie Hunt in collaboration with Sea Diver Ph. W

ith the country slowly opening up to both local and foreign tourists, it is just a matter of time before medical tourism will be back in full swing. Medical tourism is when a person travels to another country for medical care. These medical travelers usually opt to go to other countries to undergo elective procedures like plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgical procedures. “Before the pandemic, there was a lot of medical tourism. Some patients come to the country exclusively for procedures, some mix vacation with procedures. With the pandemic, it is mostly locals within the area,” related Dr. Vicente Francisco Q. Firmalo. Dr. Firmalo is a Diplomate of the Philippine Board of Plastic Surgery, a Fellow and a member of the Board of Directors of the Philippine Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (PAPRAS); an International member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and a member of the International Society of Plastic and Regenerative Surgery. He holds clinic at The Surgery Center at Centuria Medical Makati; The Medical City South Luzon in Sta. Rosa, Laguna; University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Medical Center and Clinica Antipolo Hospital and Wellness Center.

Popular procedures He mostly does chest surgeries like breast augmentation, breast reduction for both males and females, tummy tucks, liposuction and rhinoplasty. Before COVID-19, the government had been promoting the Philippines as a health tourism destination. According to a paper titled “Addressing the Gaps: The Philippines as an Emerging Health Tourism Destination,” health tourism “encompasses several industries such as medical, wellness, hospitality, transportation and logistics, among others, all of which involves the provision and availment of services to improve the health of individuals who avail of such services outside of the country. The two most notable types of health tourism are medical 14

tourism and wellness tourism. The paper noted that the Philippines is considered one of the most popular tourist destinations due to its tropical climate, fluency in Engilsh, natural beauty and rich culture. “This is evident in the rankings in the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) where the Philippines ranked 44th in international tourist arrivals, 36th in international tourism receipts and 29th in International Tourism Expenditure as of 2020,” the paper said. While the health tourism program is still in its early stage of development, the country has shown a promising future as a health tourism destination. Based on the 2020 Medical Tourism Index survey, the Philippines is ranked 24th out of 46 countries, and is one of the 25 leading growth markets for wellness tourism trips from 2015 to 2017 based on the Global Wellness Tourism Economy Report. The Philippines has strong features, according to the paper, that are seen as opportunities for the industry to gain competitive advantage over its regional competitors. These key features include the large pool of English-speaking professionals, its culture of hospitality, the quality of education and skills of health professionals, its young and hospitable work force, and competitive price advantage for healthcare and other services.


Faster recovery One person who does believe that the Philippines will do well in medical tourism is Tourism Undersecretary Benito Bengzon. In a webinar held in December 2020, Bengzon said that the country’s medical and wellness tourism sector may recover faster due to the emphasis on health brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Department of Tourism has long identified medical and wellness tourism as a promising sector in the country’s tourism industry that can contribute significantly not only to tourist traffic but more importantly as an economic driver that will help generate employment and livelihood,” he said in a report that came out in Philippine Star. Bengzon said the Philippines’ health tourism products highlight world class facilities, quality services and treatments that have generated much interest among domestic and foreign markets. “And these products have gradually positioned the Philippines as the next important player in the regional and eventually the global medical and wellness community” Bengzon said.

Credentials posted Since Dr. Firmalo’s credentials were made available in both local and international platforms, he managed to have a very good practice at that time.

“My pre-pandemic practice was a lot better in terms of numbers as well as the ease with which I could do cosmetic surgery,” Dr. Firmalo said. “Some patients would fly in and depending on the type of surgery, in seven to 14 days, they would fly back to their provinces or countries.” When asked to describe his clientele, Dr. Firmalo related that he had “a wide range” of clients. He added that a lot of his patients learned about him through his previous patients. From his friends and some through social media. “Some of my patients are very discreet and they don’t want a look where it is obvious that they had plastic surgery,” he related. “On the other hand, some of my patients, since they are in the limelight, want a more obviously enhanced appearance.” In short, Dr. Firmalo had patients whose requests ranged from “Doc, I don’t want people to know I had plastic surgery” to “Doc, I want people to know I had plastic surgery.”

Practice on hold Like most businesses, he had to put his practice on hold for a few months at the height of the pandemic in 2020. Dr. Firmalo only decided to reopen his clinic “when the numbers of COVID-19 positive and the percentage of positive patient had stabilized and there were less restrictions.” Upon reopening his clinic, Dr. Firmalo adopted the safety guidelines and protocols that were laid out by the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and the Inter Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases or IATF. “Apart from the usual health protocols of social distancing, health questionnaires, temperature checks, face masks and face shields, the clinics that I am affiliated with have routine disinfections,” Dr. Firmalo said. “We also adopted appointment-based consultations and follow ups as well as routinely requiring negative RT-PCR test results for those who will undergo procedures and for the staff as well,” he added. As patients start coming in with the easing of quarantine restrictions, Dr. Firmalo is confident that medical tourists will start coming in, especially now that the vaccination program has been rolled out in most parts of the world. “The prospects for medical tourism in the new normal for the country will still be big because Filipinos are good in English and are caring people as a whole and our medical specialists are world class so we can be very competitive among our Asian counterparts,” he said. “I believe COVID is here to stay but I am optimistic that we can bring down the number of cases in the country and keep it at bay with proper discipline of our nation as a whole,” Dr. Firmalo added. If the name Carmie De Leon rings a bell to many people especially in the healthcare industry, it is because this hardworking, energetic, charming lady executive used to be the VP of Sales Marketing and General Manager for clinic management for the country’s leading healthcare provider, Healthway. “I had my first retirement in 2002 after spending 10 years in a pharmaceutical company. I thought of resting and I put up my own food business but it didn’t last.” I was missing team dynamics, board meetings and quotas so I went back to corporate. In 2004, I was recommended by my former officemate to join Healthway. I was interviewed and hired by the Chairman who then became my favorite mentor. I started as a sales manager and have found a huge playground since then,” she related. Being the VP for Sales and Marketing of Healthway for 17 years was not an easy road for Carmie. Pivoting the business while caring for customers and developing a new market is a no brainer for me but I felt like something was missing,” she added.

People and passion

When asked what she was most proud about Healthway Medical, Carmie said it was the people and passion that they had for the brand, their tasks and for one another. She pointed out that there is the culture of care that emanates from the people who truly love to serve. “Given all the changes and challenges brought about by


the pandemic, it has also opened other avenues for most people to experiment, explore and reset. I wasn’t spared. During the pandemic, the sudden change in the atmosphere brought about by the new work arrangement and higher demands of the job triggered my curiosity to step out of my comfort zone,” she said.

As a highly sociable, type-A personality, Carmie said she thrived in dealing with people. With COVID, she was forced to do more things online “and at the same time overcome depression while promoting wellness and happiness.” “In between meetings I tried painting and during meetings, I noticed that I am calmer and more composed. Little did I know, things happened to bring me back to my real passion – arts,” Carmie said. “I have a new routine. I start my day feeling the air, looking around, stretching and painting. I paint while listening to praise songs and allow the spirit to flow,” she added.. For Carmie, arts is a gift, a stimulant and relaxant. “When I paint, I pick any color and strike freely, without planning ahead. I end up with paintings that reflect my moods and emotions. As I express my feelings through. I get dark creations when I’m sad and confused, colorful illustrations when I’m happy and at peace. Either way, it helps me get rid of negative thoughts. There’s also much excitement after seeing my labor of love and creativity,” she said.

Bag painting

Carmie dabbled into a lot of things until she finally found something that she liked doing. “I did all kinds of tricks and played around until I figured out what my forte was. I painted shirts, pants and skirts, walls, wine bottles, mugs, pillowcases, and now, my favorite is Mitzify leather bags from Canada. One thing I’m most excited about is this collaboration with a Filipina entrepreneur based in Canada where we agreed that I would do the hand painted Bagful of

The world always looks brighter from behind a smile. This is why Dr. Analiza Porciuncula Borras keeps smiling back as life brings about interesting twists and turns in her 52-year journey. The licensed dental practitioner is in the business of helping people attain the most beautiful smile through the successful Swiss Dental Clinic in Parañaque City, where she personally performs procedures for her clients and patients. Doc Ana, as she is fondly called by her clients and peers, obtained her degree in Dentistry from the Manila Central University in 1993. “My father wanted to have a doctor in the family,” she recalls. “But the thought of 10 years mastering the profession was not enticing enough for me.” She had also considered taking Ophthalmology but was held back by the observation that most Filipinos don’t usually prioritize getting a check-up whenever they have eye problems. “Unlike when you’re experiencing pain in your teeth or gums, you would immediately want to see a dentist.”

Unexpected opportunity

However, life brought a different smile when Doc Ana bumped into a different opportunity before she graduated. A cousin from Bicol dropped by for an interview at the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA). “She was applying as a Flight Attendant. It got me excited that I asked if I could join her for her interview,” she narrates. Fortunately, she had the time to accompany her cousin as she was already done with her clinical requirements by then. While waiting for her cousin to finish her interview, an officer took notice of her and asked if she was also scheduled for an interview. The same officer enticed her to give it a try. “I was in my white uniform. I hurriedly went down from POEA and bought a bio-data, filled it out, and proceeded to the interview.” To her surprise, they asked her to return the next day in corporate attire. She succeeded in the process! The opportunity came so fast that Doc Ana almost missed her graduation. She was immediately deployed. “April 4 was our graduation. The next day, April 5, at 7 a.m., I was already at the airport!” Doc Ana had to set aside practicing her profession to be a Flight Attendant for the five years that followed—she worked at Saudia Airlines for two years and Qatar Airways for another three years. Return to dental practice

Doc Ana worked part-time as a Dental Hygienist in Switzerland until 2003. It was during that time that she started considering taking the dental board exams, which she had skipped when she decided to be a flight attendant. In 2005, Doc Ana came home to Manila and sought a former professor who was running a review center for the Dentistry board exams. “I was confident I would pass my board and hurdle the 11-year gap from the time I graduated. I was even working part-time at a friend’s clinic while taking the review classes,” she recalls. She passed the board on her first take. Upon getting the license, Doc Ana established the Swiss Dental Clinic on September 28, 2005 in its first site along Buendia Avenue (now Gil Puyat Avenue) in Makati City. “I adapted my learning experiences from Switzerland and brought their best practices here. That’s why the clinic is named ‘Swiss,’” she says. Swiss Dental Clinic immediately carved its place in the industry through its most sought-after services that included veneers installation. Doc Ana has become a trusted dental professional for numerous celebrities, basketball players, beauty pageant hopefuls, politicians, and other Filipinos who are after the best dental and oral care.

Dental care the ‘Swiss’ way

Its growth paved the way for Swiss Dental Clinic’s second location—in Parañaque City. However, because Doc Ana intends to keep the high quality of service the clinic has been known for, she tried personally performing important procedures. That’s when she realized she could not keep two locations at the same time. “I wanted to make sure Swiss Dental Clinic will always uphold the best quality of dental care that the name has become synonymous with,” she explains. Thus, the Makati City clinic folded, giving way to the Parañaque City site as the only Swiss Dental Clinic location to date. “I am happy with this decision as I personally attend to my clients and at the same time make sure they get the best care through my years of experience,” she says. When the pandemic hit, Swiss Dental Clinic had to make adjustments to ensure the overall safety of its staff and clients. Doc Ana reveals that they invested almost P500,000 to implement new-normal safety protocols. Aside from the added expenses for frequent disinfection in the facility, the clinic spent more on hygiene items (masks and gloves) and new industryapproved equipment to continue procedures. Continuing operations during an ongoing pandemic has become inevitably costlier but the clinic takes this not just as a challenge to overcome but also as a move to its unwavering commitment to bring the best dental care to Filipinos. 26

Personal time

Despite her hectic schedule, Doc Ana finds time to unwind so she can continue her advocacy of spreading smiles through her commitment to service. During her free time, she drops by her place in Zambales, where she enjoys going to the beach and doing other leisure activities. She also spends quality time with her children—her son is now 24 and her daughter is 22. Both are starting to live their own lives and pursue their respective career paths. “We still enjoy doing some activities together just like in the old times, when they were just kids in Switzerland,” she says. Doc Ana also goes out to catch up with friends whenever she has the luxury of time. “Life is fun and so we just have to enjoy it even if work becomes tedious and hectic on the usually busy days.” Still at her prime, Doc Ana intends to keep Swiss Dental Clinic a place to spread more smiles. “We take good care of all our clients. Evangeline “Vangie” Ariaga Arseniuk, CEO of Pilipinas Biringan and Corporate Secretary of Green Mountain Energy Solutions, plays a vital role as she leads the initiative, together with Suyo Mayor Samuel, to transform Region One into an Agro-Industrial Economic Zone under the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) in order to attract investments in the agriculture sector and green industries. In all honesty, I have not been to this town much less heard of it. So I inquired and found out that it is part of Ilocos Sur, Region 1.


SUYO A quick search about the town showed that Suyo is from the Ilocano word “naisuyo” which means “thrown.” According to folklore, since Suyo runs parallel to the Chico River, it is said that the town was formed from the soil that was accumulated from the riverbanks. Suyo became a regular Municipality in 1962, composed of eight barangays and 45 sitios. The early inhabitants of the town originated from the Cordillera Mountain, who migrated during the concluding period of the Spanish regime in the Philippines. With the town having a population of more than 12,000, Suyo is a 4th class municipality. Suyo offers the vast beauty of nature, conserved and undefiled, and with a rich cultural heritage that one can eagerly discover. Its topography offers both cool pine-breeze from the highlands of Cordillera and tropical weather of Ilocandia. Simply amazing! As a true blooded Ilocano and a native of Baguio, harmonizing modernization with green reforms is a game changer. Laying the foundations of the project using green methodologies and technologies for its people, process and projects is just brilliant!

Getting it done Going back to that afternoon with Vangie, while enjoying our coffee and the cold weather in Baguio, she detailed the plans on how to ecozone-proof the municipality. Suyo Ecozone is anchored on resiliency and sustainability. Vangie had it all mapped out and it is superb!

To make the Suyo Ecozone attractive to potential investors, the team came up with state-of-the-art technologies and quality infrastructures to serve as the backbone of these industries. Creation of a cultural hub. The project includes the drive to preserve and promote local arts and crafts. The Suyo Cultural Hub aims to strengthen its heritage through a repository of artistic works and knowledge. The design is focused on utilizing organic architecture composed of local and sustainable materials where it embeds the region’s rich stories of cultural mores. Suyo’s Cultural Hub will serve as the presentation center for artists in residence and neighboring towns, for exhibits, studios, workshops and other presentation activities. It is projected to house vast literary works of Region 1. It gets more exciting when at that point we start discussing the plans of preserving the local and neighboring town’s weaving population and the handicrafts training strategies to propel human resources in this sector. By enabling product development facilities, a weaving center using local indigenous and modernized hybrid fabrics would open doors to export industries and green sectors for support and funding.

• Cotton farm. Using methods and materials that have low impact on the environment, the community aims to propel cotton production which will be exported to a ready buyer from Japan. In place are organic production systems that are intended to replenish and maintain soil fertility, expand biologically diverse agriculture, and prohibit the use of synthetic toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, as well as genetically engineered seed. Getting it done right To quote President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., “The bedrock of a revitalized economy is value creation.” - The Suyo Little Earth project is precisely that. This initiative unveils and brings the value of embracing modernization while accelerating reforms for managing the impact of climate change. The Suyo Ecozone will leave an indelible mark in the economic landscape, being the first of its kind that will push green modernization and development. ike a string of thousands of idyllic islands, the Philippines is a wondrous waterworld where rich bodies of water abound at the bosom of the mountains, plains and its coastline which stretches almost infinitely. Sarangani province is a shining, shimmering proof of why the archipelago is the ultimate natural playground for water lovers. Embraced by the Sarangani Bay in Mindanao, this unheralded getaway will surely dazzle beach bums, be it for aquasports or simply frolicking on the beach or the refreshing splash of rushing rivers. Declared a Protected Seascape and a Key Marine Biodiversity Area, this gigantic 226-km cove offers enthralling beach escapades both on the surface and beneath. Scuba divers will be mesmerized by the remarkable assemblage of coral and aquatic animal life at the Tinoto Wall right below Lemlunay Resort in Maasim town, the province’s prime dive spot. Within the municipal waters is Maasim Reef which abound with juvenile white-tipped sharks, huge fan corals, gigantic bat fish, and astounding gardens of marine flora. At various points of the bay, divers can sight yellowfin tuna, dolphins, clown fish, lion fish, sergeant fish, sea turtles,

whale sharks, cheilinus undulatos (Mameng), dugongs (sea cows), and an assortment of exotic aquatic life. Because of its marine diversity, this underwater world has been named by the Department of Tourism as the scuba diving haven of the Soccsksargen Region. Beach lovers will find a charming retreat in Gumasa Beach in Glan, a mile-long stretch of powdery white sand and crystalline water which is a quiet escape without the madding crowd. The coastline is dotted with cozy boutique resorts, restaurants which offer culinary treats, not to mention stunning panoramas during sunsets. These sleepy shores turn into a hive of watersports and family-oriented recreation with the Sarangani Bay (SarBay) Festival which draws mammoth crowds during summer. The annual event has been on a hiatus, though, due to the pandemic and eager southerners cannot wait to have this outdoor party back soon. Another exciting aquatic experience in this beach colony is scuba diving, with the recent opening of the town’s dive tourism program and expanding the sites within the bay. Sun worshippers can also laze in the sun, sea and sand at Tuka Beach, a patch of powdery sand tucked in a secluded cove in Kiamba. Its marine park is a protected sanctuary where fish spawn, making it a haven for snorkeling and freediving.


After basking in the sea, one can hie off to the town’s upland area to chill and rinse in the refreshing waters of the three-tiered Bocay-el Falls which form icy natural basins. A must-try is the whitewater tube ride at Pangi River where one can get an adrenaline rush along the waistdeep rapids. Situated at Maitum’s interior near the foot of Mt. Busait is a community-oriented eco-adventure tourism spot which is ideal for close-tonature activities.

Guests can indulge in the ancient art of weaving from both the indigenous lumad and Moro tribes with the rich tapestry from all cultural stripes. Visitors can immerse at the Lamlifew Community Village Museum in Malungon town, the first of its kind in the country, which chronicles the ethnic heritage, organic agriculture, and the intricate mabal tabih weaving of the Blaan tribes. This award-winning cultural project is as close as one can get to the

authentic Blaan way of life as guests are welcomed by villagers in traditional regalia to the beat of percussion instruments and the music of the twostringed faglong guitar. It takes pride in its museum and School of Living Tradition where native women spin the mabal tabih, an exquisite abaca fiber which is regarded as Sarangani’s crown jewel of cultural resources. Further up into the hinterlands of Malungon is the Tagakaolo tribe, a lesser-known but equally-colorful lumad tribe which takes pride in its exotic tapestry. Another gem of a fabric is inaul, the traditional silky fabric of the Maguindanaon community which has found its way into the world’s prestigious catwalks as accents of Filipino haute couture. Handwoven by local women, you can witness its magical weaving at the Balungis Weaving Center in in Malapatan town. A unique traditional craft is igem (mat) weaving by a Blaan community in an upland sitio which is the home of master weaver Bai Estelita Bantilan, a Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan (National Living Treasure) awardee, the highest government recognition to folk artists. With the confluence of its waterworld and weaves, Sarangani is a wonderland which packs a knockout punch much like its famed world boxing champ.

F

or eight decades now since making its heroic last stand against Japan in World War 2, Bataan has been synonymous to the uncommon valor displayed by its defenders against overwhelming odds. It’s small wonder then that many of its tourist attractions are associated with the historic spots which figured prominently during the Pacific War. But beyond the memories left by the war, this peninsular province offers an exciting experience you will surely fall for. What used to be a long and circuitous journey in the not-so-distant past is a breeze with the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway and the improvement of the Roman Superhighway, the main road. For an insightful drive around, the Bataan Tourism Center is a one-stop visitors information center in the capital city of Balanga. It has a souvenir shop, a diorama mini-museum, audio-visual room that plays war documentaries and tourism videos, and a manicured park which is now a top public recreational area with its promenade gardens, lagoon and amphitheater. Travel back in time to the Ground Zero of Bataan’s gallantry at the World War 2 Museum inside the Balanga Elementary School where Fil-American troops surrendered to the Japanese. The act of capitulation is depicted through a life-size bronze tableau at the very spot where it took place in 1942. Meanwhile, you can witness some 9,500 endemic and migratory birds flying by at dusk at the City of Balanga Wetlands and Nature Park, a 34-hectare mangrove forest, foreshore and special ecotourism zone. Not to be missed is the postcard-pretty Dambana ng Kagitingan (Shrine of Valor) in Mt. Samat in Pilar, which is a must-see for all first-time visitors of Bataan. The centerpiece of this government memorial complex is a 92-meter tall cross punctuated by relief sculptures of the late National Artist Napoleon Abueva, a colonnade with the war dead’s names, and a museum. At the shrine’s platform, one can have a commanding view of the island fortress of Corregidor just across Manila Bay. The iconic mountain is also an adventure tourism and enterprise zone with the recreational facilities, forest trails, waterfall and natural pool. Situated at Bataan’s bottom most tip is Mariveles, once a top summer beach excursion place in the 1980s for Metro Manilans

because of its long coastline. Situated at the foot of Mt. Mariveles, the heart of the town can be reached through a breathtaking steep zigzag road. An iconic historic spot is the Km 0 park of the infamous Death March where over 70,000 Filipino and American troops who surrendered were gathered for the 100-km walk to their prison camp in Tarlac. Nestled at the mountain’s slopes is The Oriental Hotel Bataan, a luxe stomping ground for business travelers and the homebase for staycationers who want to behold the bounty of the province. Known as the Bataan Hilltop Hotel in the 1970s, it is an architectural masterpiece of the late National Artist Leandro Locsin during his heyday located at the Freeport Area of Bataan industrial enclave. L

ike many other people who have been confined to their homes during the pandemic, my family and I have been itching to travel and get away from the city. When the opportunity to travel to Baguio first came up, I was apprehensive about the process, since I knew there were many restrictions in place and it seemed like it would be a stressful process. To my pleasant surprise, it was a breeze, mainly due to the fact that we were guests at the Baguio Country Club. Unlike the other tourists entering Baguio who had to get the antigen test at the Camp John Hay center, by virtue of having reservations to stay at BCC, we breezed through the checkpoint and

were able to have our antigen test done onsite, within the BCC compound. We were in and out within an hour. How convenient! That certainly set the tone for the rest of our stay! As far as health and safety was concerned, we were satisfied and our minds were at ease. Aside from the antigen tests required of everyone entering Baguio, staff and guests alike were following the safety protocols and wearing masks and face shields, and maintaining social distancing and sanitizing. Checking into one of the newlyrefurbished detached cottages across from the main BCC compound, we were able to appreciate the huge windows that gave us a delightful view of Baguio’s natural scenery. It really brought back memories of growing up in Baguio, enjoying the fresh air and cool weather in the City of Pines. The three-bedroom cottage was private and delightfully homey, with a spacious living room. For the meals we didn’t feel like going out. We brought food back to the cottage and easily set it up in the dining area, since the kitchen was fully-equipped with appliances and crockery. When the afternoon waned into evening, housekeeping came to the cottage and built a fire in the fireplace, creating a relaxing atmosphere, conducive to private reflection and bonding moments with the family.

It rained throughout our trip and reminded me of London’s foggy and rainy weather. I had been looking forward to playing golf on one of the country’s finest courses, but the gloomy weather encouraged us to explore BCC’s other amenities. I still got to play golf—albeit indoors. BCC’s Golf Simulation Room recreates the actual 18-hole outdoor course and allows you to choose among various environments and courses. While I was preoccupied with teeing off, my son, my daughter, and my niece headed towards the Recreational Center. They made the most of the fullyautomated bowling lanes and played a few rounds. Afterwards, they tried their hands at billiards and table tennis. Later on, my son went to do his daily workout at BCC’s Fitness Center, which was awesomely complete with state-of-the-art machines and equipment! He did some weightbearing exercises and was able to squeeze in some HIIT (high-intensity interval training) cardio. It was great that everyone was able to enjoy some physical activity that we didn’t normally get to do at home. Another highlight of our stay was our lunch at Hamada. In all the time I’ve spent at BCC, it was my first time to dine at this Japanese restaurant, and it certainly won’t be my last! The expertlytrained chef entertained us with his acrobatic cooking style and delighted us with his sumptuous dishes. We ordered the Yamamori set menu, which came with US Black Angus beef, chicken, salmon, and shrimp. It was all so juicy and wellcooked, and went great with the Japanese fried rice. Towards the end of our meal we were stuffed already but we made room for a special dessert: the teppanyaki ice cream. It’s safe to say we all enjoyed our dining experience at Hamada! All in all, our short stay at Baguio Country Club was a truly exceptional experience. It was a much-needed retreat from the city, and that allowed us to get back to Manila refreshed and inspired to take on new challenges. We’ll definitely be back when we need another dose of fresh air and 5-star service.

Anos Research Manufacturing: A firetruck firm on fire

In a country plagued by numerous fires every year, a reliable fire protection system is a must in every city or municipal government. As the country marks Fire Prevention Month every March, the fire truck takes center stage to highlight safety and the fire-fighting capabilities of the local fire station. The good thing is that there is a local company that can manufacture fire trucks at par with its international counterparts and has proven its mettle through the fire, quite literally. In 1976, home-grown inventor Alfredo Anos Sr. established Anos Research Philippines to develop technologies that would help make the daily lives of Filipinos more convenient. Among his passion-driven creations include the award-winning mechanical inventions, such as wind power generator, boring device, blood plasma sheller, irrigation pump, and the Anos fire pump. The latter will become the core of a new product line, the Anos Fire Truck. Regarded as the “Godfather of Filipino Inventors,” his breakthrough products won numerous accolades including two Presidential Awards and two gold medals from the Geneva-based United Nations Economic and Social Council affiliated World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

In 1994, the firm was renamed Anos Research Manufacturing and focused on designing, manufacturing, and patenting fire trucks utilizing its own trademark fire pump. Its iconic model is the Penetrator, a fire truck capable of maneuvering through congested and narrow streets. Equipped with the Anos Fire Pump, it can attain NFPA-standard water discharge ratings of 500gpm at 120psi while utilizing a smaller engine for efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Another sought-after model is the Patriot, a model that was specifically designed for the Bureau of Fire Protection and is the most versatile model in the lineup. The Patriot utilizes the same Anos Fire Pump and can store up to 1,000 gallons of water. The company also plans to tap previously untouched markets, specifically the barangays and the private sector with its Light Responder, a model that is designed to be “light on its wheels” and light in your pockets. “We build our own fire trucks inside out, top to bottom and outfitting each unit with the patented Anos technology and comes with a lifetime free-service warranty, a proof of our confidence in our products,” says ARM VP of Sales and Marketing Stephen Anthony Garcia. He added that customers can be

assured of prompt part replacement as the truck’s components are locally sourced and manufactured, indicating that every unit sold provides employment to almost 1,000 Filipino families. The young executive pointed out that among the top qualities of the Anos fire truck is its flexibility for customization and compatibility with truck models preferred by customers. ARM takes pride in being the world’s first manufacturer to design and create a multi-role three-in-one fire truck called the Anos Fire Ambulance and Rescue Vehicle (AFARV), it has 1,000-gallons water capacity, a compressed air foam system (CAFS), a fully equipped ambulance cabin, and is decked with modern rescue equipment. “For almost 30 years, we have sold over 540 brand new trucks to both government agencies, private entities, and volunteer fire brigades which reflect their faith in the global quality of Filipino ingenuity. Among our top clients include the Bureau of Fire Protection, the city governments of Muntinlupa, LapuLapu, Zamboanga and Quezon City, the province of Camarines Sur, as well as Iglesia Ni Cristo, ABS-CBN and the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority,” Garcia reveals. As part of its diversification, the firm is expanding its product line-up to include fully equipped ambulances and soon, proprietary military vehicles for the Armed Forces of the Philippines. “With nearly five decades of experience in proudly Filipino worldclass technology, a growing list of satisfied customers, and vast potential for diversification, we can confidently say that Anos Research Manufacturing is indeed, a firetruck firm on fire,” Garcia concludes.

T

he turn of this decade seemed daunting yet formidable for our growth as individuals and as a society. It taught us a variety of skills, helped us to reevaluate and take a deep look into who we are, what and where we are heading to. The months that have gone by taught us to adapt and be versatile. It taught us to also rethink our lifestyle. I bet you also have an abundance of realizations that will make you wink, smile and say “Now, that’s what I call wisdom”. When WHO declared Covid-19 a pandemic, I was in the midst of my travels around Europe to visit friends and also in my professional capacity as an artist on a mission. I was thrilled to paint a mural in Madrid, Spain for the ASEAN celebration together with the ASEAN Committee in Madrid and meet local children and communities through my art curated programs on art and diversity. At that moment, I thought one of my teenage dreams would come true. However, I was redirected to do something else when social distancing was enforced. I am not frustrated honestly, being an optimist. Again, I believe in God’s perfect timing and true enough I ended up realizing my long time childhood dream of producing a series of art tutorials to be shared online and in foreign soil . I was redirected by the pandemic to focus on what I thought was left in my yesteryears.

Among the many things that happened were I published a children’s book that teaches about the importance of accepting oneself; opened more opportunities to collaborate with fellow artists; exhibits in other countries, installed a pivotal piece on girls’ rights and empowerment in India , and furthered my cause while developing my craft. Again, all of these happened because I was redirected. I rested my feet from traveling yet I have been to many places all year round by just clicking away. Well, again it is the purpose that makes me travel and the connections that I built with people. Redirect by definition is to to direct to a new or different place or purpose. And yes, my new favorite word is “redirect” in all forms (past, present and future). I bet most of you appreciated the value of this word during the past months. And this is what I wish to share with you readers! We are living in an extraordinary time. We all had our fair shares of stories on hardship and resilience; inspiration and desperation; and everything in between. Turbulating beautifully just like the sea is what I’d like to call this phase of our lives. I am not trying to paint a rosy picture of coping through my words here, rather I wish to share how diction or our choice of words can help us better our perspective. A very good friend of mine always tells me about the power of the words


that we choose. Just like time, words are irreversible when said. It is powerful enough to affect our perspective, introspection and the way we react to the environment around us. I bet being at home for a period of time made you scroll your phone to look for quotes to make you feel better. Well, I am one of those that whenever I feel lonely, I turn to the power of quotes to ease me from it. According to the book “Words Can Change Your Brain” by Dr. Newberg and Dr. Waldman (2013), “A single word has the power to influence the expression of genes that regulate physical and emotional stress.” Being an artist and a public relations enthusiast, I believe in the influence of every single word that I use in naming my pieces to stir a conversation. True enough. and sometimes I just use the word “Untitled” and the word itself rings a bell to those who’d like to analyze the motivation and my character as an artist with that word. True enough, it evokes emotions that sparks up exchanges of words. Words can break or make you so might as well be a ball of positive energy in this challenging time and beyond. Having a positive vocabulary can make you shine from within and become a ray of sunshine for people around you. So here are some tips of how you can make this happen: 1. Acquaint / reacquaint yourself with poems and prose. The world is filled with great minds nowadays yet we need more empaths and those who can articulate the beauty of humanity. 2. Add more words to your vocabulary by saying hello to your dictionary. Whether it is the traditional hard copy or the online version, it will help you widen your vocabulary. We are instantly communicating through our devices and being adept with usage of words can help you develop your confidence level as well. 3. Read and practice saying the word. This will help you say things with conviction and sincerity. 4. Write affirmative notes. It’s time to get creative! Choose words that you’d like to become or just simply create your mantra and see how it can make you feel good. 5. Don’t be an accent nazi. People who mispronounce words are often the ones who know how to spell it because they’ve learned it through reading and not merely just by listening. Creatively Yours, AK

n the world of Philippine creative hair styline, there is only one name in the indusry that pop up in our mind. Celebrity hair stylist Lourd Ryan keeps on innovating and is always celebrating his artistry through his work. It’s no wonder why he is one of the best hairdressers in the country. Looking back at our first collaboration for his book “Imprint,” I helped a photographer friend manipulate his photo entry. The theme was about St. Sebastian. Then a year later, around 2019 I told myself I have to meet this talented person and with the hope that it could open doors for me and enhance my knowledge in fashion photography. What I like about Lourd is that he always guides his team. He is very hands on during productions, giving instructions and advice to junior hair stylists, make-up arists, models and the rest of the team. While he never forgets to give specific instructions, he allows his creatives to give their person touches. To be able to express our own vision and interpretation to our work is a very kind gesture, especially for someone like me who is jsut starting in the industry.

I can still remember the time when were shooting in the penthouse at the BGC Stopover in Taguig. The sun was so high up and we only had a few minutes to finish the layouts. Imagine the models were in their ball gowns during a steamy hot afternoon. I barely fould not open my eyes because my sweat was pouring on my viewfinder. This is just one of the few sessions I had with Lourd. As a photographer, I always look up to talented people like Lourd, who is passionate and never forgets to put his mark on his creations. It is also at the same time breath taking to capture those details like how the models gracefully move during the photo shoots. Photography is not about how fancy the productions are and working with Lourd has made me realize this. For so long as you’re brave enough to take risks and are strong enough to take criticisms. For as long as you understand your purpose and you know why you want to do it. “Go on and take your camera and capture all the beautiful things around you.” That’s the lesson I learned from Sir Lourd Ryan Ramos.

Unlike other retirees, Carmie kept herself busy exploring where she can be happier and where best to share her talents. She finally had time to do what her heart dictates like hosting a show for TNC called Inspiring Moments and polishing her 2nd book, “my beautiful connection” as she calls it, which talks about divine orchestration and secrets to meaningful relationships. Aside from being a freelance Sales and Marketing advisor, this tireless Pound fitness pro (cardio exercise instructor) and corporate wellness coach works just as hard as when she was in her C-level post, but with the time to paint to express her emotions and show her gratitude for life no matter how hard. “I’m simply limitless and unstoppable, I know I’m surrounded by angels and meant for something greater.” Carmie said.


From waste to masterpieces Carmie came across Reztyle that supports the circular economy model, and she played with the idea of launching her paintings in dresses.

Divinely orchestrated

Art as a form of therapy Carmie rekindled her love for colors at the height of the pandemic, when she had to face new assignments, more stressors and increasing market demands. Painting helped her manage her temper and tranquility. After her mom died, she created more dramatic paintings that sparked hope, courage and commitment to stay on top. Carmie painted flowers and angels on paper, canvas, walls and wood to keep her out of depression. Right after her last day on the job in July last year, Carmie signed up with a Filipino-Canadian entrepreneur to hand paint branded leather bags by Mitzify Canada. Along with the other international artist collaborators of Mitzify, Carmie’s angel collection was launched and is now one of the most favored and best selling painted bags.

Everything seems to be in sync From angel bags, Carmie launched her wearable arts at the VIRRCO art exhibit spearheaded by advocate Rommel Rico, a New York based artist that urged her to do a fashion show side by side the exhibit for

the Red Ribbon Project that supports the Duyan Foundation. The fashion show was co-crafted in less than a month, and was covered by international media. This was made possible with the love and support of the VIRRCO team, JCI Caloocan- Bantayog, Global Women of Change, Experience Travel Magazine, Aspire Magazine Global, Project Red Ribbon, SM Centerpoint and the whole community of ReStyle.

Angels come after Angels More collaborators approached the dynamic dynamo when friends learned about her retirement. But her favorite is ReZtyle. “I get calls everyday for consultation, guesting and potential partnerships, and I keep my door open because that’s where my joy and excitement begin. I’m fond of exploring possibilities, aligning and collaborating. I find beauty in synergy. I want to know what’s happening out there and how I can make things more bearable. So far, I’m so excited about redesigning with Reztyle,” she said.

Consistent with her mantra, the wellness guru found a reason to pursue her passion for fashion, with a new purpose. This came after the full house screening of InPaglayag, a documentary about the history of Muslims in the Philippines whom Spaniards referred as “Moros,” a term which resembled their previous conquests in the Moorish empire.


Featured Designers: HERs LAHA is a strong advocate of the cultural heritage of Bangsamoro through weavering artistry. HERs LAHA Atelier is the first luxxe modest wear in the Philippines, established last 2016 and creates unique pieces rich with cultural design, with each abaya custommade with a unique signature identity. It’s vision is to amplify the stories of Moro heritage through rural women empowerment in the postconflict Southern region of Mindanao. In this show, the Inaul was featured, one of the finest handwoven fabrics in the Philippines. Yolk in the heart of Baguio City’s parks words and photos by Jomai Arnaiz

For years, the husband and wife team of JP and Jomai Arnaiz have always wanted to put up their own business. JP was the Assistant Mall Manager of SM Baguio while Jomai was a wedding and event planner. This is where her interest in food trucks stemmed from. They started asking City Hall regarding permits and licensing back in 2018 but always ended up being looked at like mad scientists. Nobody believed in the concept. This they found quite odd because they knew they’ve seen food trucks in the city before but just never stayed long. Until March 2020. Covid-19 happened. Pandemic lockdowns came about. Jomai had to leave for the US to take care of her terminally ill uncle who took care of her since birth while JP stayed in the Philippines and continued working. It all seemed like the business plans again were hopeless. But when Jomai’s uncle died, she came back home and

she was just more driven than ever as she knew events were at a standstill. Seeing her colleagues doing sideline jobs by selling food, the couple decided to create a food truck FOR RENT. The goal was to rent out the truck to her colleagues for a maximum of two months so that they had ample time to earn during the pandemic. They figured too that nobody’s done this yet. They both believed it would be something. And they both loved the idea of being able to help others. So off they went to City Hall as they were over prepared with cue cards ready for retaliation. But then, when they pitched their idea, they were requested by the City to help with the ambulant vendors instead. The Arnaizs were excited. They presented their proposal to the vendors. However, the park vendors could not grasp the concept of the food truck yet. And so, this is where Yolk was conceptualized. They needed a case study so that the vendors could see the potential of the food truck business.


Yolk is a living example that we can all just get up and punch this pandemic in the face. And proof that we all have what it takes to be resilient. Being in the events business, Jomai had a knack for researching and getting a feel of what could work and what’s relatable and appealing to the market. During the pandemic, she noticed that people loved Korean dramas and anything else Korean. She loved the Egg Drop concept of South Korea. Luckily enough, her brother Jonas also finished culinary courses and his passion was really food. So it just all came together – the taste, the look, the feel and most importantly the vibe of the Yolk was created. From there it just was a roller coaster of blessings. And they kept their promise to help the displaced ambulant park vendors. They came up with an “Adopta-Vendor” scheme where the ambulant vendors would set up shop around the truck, similar to a food hub or park but with a more dignified look. They would be donned in proper uniform, hairnet, kiosks, closed shoes, and would be following all IATF protocols. Plus, Yolk also aims to promote Baguio’s parks. After all, they were the ones who took a chance at the idea.

very individual has the potential to make it big and make a difference if given the opportunity. This is the belief of Hosfelito “Jhopet” O. Fines, President and CEO of tech-enabled sales and marketing company TOPYUGO Digital, Inc. (TDI). Thus, the 32-year-old self-made businessman finds fulfillment in helping his employees emerge as entrepreneurs, partners, or executives of the company. Since its establishment, TDI has set as its mission to make its staff grow personally and professionally along with the business, a unique differentiator that makes it stand out from other businesses. “I don’t want them to stay with the company as an employee forever,” Fines said. As such, TDI came up with the OTG program, with the main objective to make its people “graduate” as entrepreneurs, senior managers, or executives of the business or its external brands. Upon completion of the three-year program, an employee has to cascade what he has learned to another participant, who then does the same to another. The cyclical process paves the way for many other successful entrepreneurs or professionals, who could eventually establish their own businesses. “What the program guarantees is long-term success. However, OTG is not compulsory,” he added. “We qualify people based on excellence and on how much they are willing to sacrifice for greater gains. Most employees sign up upon seeing the progress of those who get into the program—some of them are able to buy cars or earn six-figure commissions in a short time. We attract people who think long term.”

Developing people’s potential Fines, a successful sales and marketing expert, has the knack for matching skills and capacity of individuals. OTG guides the participants in honing their potentials and using various platforms to meet their goals. One success story is a company driver who was able to get into his own sideline. In March this year, his initiative, with the guidance of the company, was able to close Php30,000 in gross sales from selling an in-house perfume brand. And that is just the beginning. “We take care of them, produce for them, give them opportunities, and expose them to our business network. I personally look into an individual’s capacity and create a business model for him. That’s my talent—to create unique business models. Many times, even I am surprised at each person’s potential,” Fines revealed. To further guide the new entrepreneur, Fines volunteers to become a shareholder in the new business. “From small projects with contracts, when those succeed, we then decide to pursue or register the new business. He can become the president of his own venture and I can be a minority shareholder. I invest in them in the early stage when no one believes in them.” 62

Fines only aims for the success of his people. He takes the risks in investing (training and capital-wise) and commits to continuously help and fix problems until success is ensured. He values long-term relationships especially with the people he helps. That’s where he gets the fulfillment in his personal mission to help others.

A company of opportunities “TDI is a summary of what I’ve been through in the past decades of my life,” Fines confided. As a self-made businessman, he knows how to start from scratch. In college, he started earning from buying old textbooks and renting those out to other students. After completing his degree, he started selling porridge (lugaw) in the town plaza. From there, his entrepreneurial journey pushed forth until he rose to become a manager, an executive, an operator, and a consultant for sales and marketing. TDI was born in the latter part of 2019—an interesting time as it was just a few months before the onset of the still ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. But that external and inevitable setback was never a detriment to the company’s growth. From a venture with just three employees, TDI grew exponentially to become a sales and marketing powerhouse with over 400 staff to date. “I wanted to make an impact on my employees. How can I do that? I can achieve my financial goals, but at the same time, I want a majority of my people or at least those who invest time, energy, and belief in our mission to grow with us as well. That’s why TDI diversified. We had to meet the different angles of doing operations. Risks are inevitable so we have been strategic,” Fines said.

An effective discipline

Aside from his sales and marketing expertise paired with his personal mission to help other people, which aligns with his religion (The Church of Latter Day Saints), Fines is also a master in stringent financial discipline. “I don’t handle money. I take an allowance from my wife, who also takes care of the company’s finances. She is my treasure and my treasurer as well,” he quipped. “If I want to buy something for myself, I don’t ask for cash to buy it. I create a small business model to generate the amount. I make business models for every need or want.” This discipline extends to how he manages TDI. The unique business models have paved the way for the company to “think and perform out of the box.” Consequently, TDI’s products and brands are “bigger than the box” and come with valueadded offers. For one, most of those are bundled with marketing promotions that are mostly anchored on NFT. The unique image codes redirect resellers and customers to attractive raffle promos or to exclusive content (relevant to the brands) from the company’s partner influencers. This strategy makes all 15 brands

more attractive to consumers. From its home base in Nasugbu, Batangas, TDI markets its products nationwide through various selling platforms—Lazada, Shopee, and even social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. The company is also set to explore opportunities across the region. They aim to tap the market in Thailand beginning June and other ASEAN countries within the year) and as far as Canada by August this year.

Pieces of advice for entrepreneurs With TDI’s continuous growth and success, Fines’ mission to help others is unwavering. To also guide and inspire more people, he shares three pieces of advice. “First, make yourself the measurement of success. Nobody holds your success but yourself. Be the measurement of standard. If you want high-quality people, you should be of high-quality yourself. Your company or business is just a multiplier of who you are,” he said. Second, Fines advises other people to develop an idea. “Most successful entrepreneurs did not start liquid. People who are pushed back by the lack of capital usually don’t have a compelling business idea to begin with. If you believe in your idea, make it serve as your motivation to find ways to make it happen.” Lastly, Fines calls on every entrepreneur to observe worklife balance. “It is a must to spend time with people who matter most—your family,” he emphasized. Fines reveals another discipline he observes—he makes sure he is home by 7 p.m. every working day to play or do fun activities with his three kids. Sunday is Church Day. If he gets the opportunity for a “metime,” he gets to enjoy his hobby, sniper shooting, which for him is meditative. Fines also advocates in healthy living and getting enough sleep each night. Indeed, TDI and Fines prove that entrepreneurship is not just about financial fulfillment. Their mission to help others become their own success story comes to the forefront. Nothing beats a good purpose.

London Bridge is falling down, My fair lady.” The rhyme is constructed of quatrains in trochaic tetrameter catalectic, (each line made up of four metrical feet of two syllables, with the stress falling on the first syllable in a pair; the last foot in the line missing the unstressed syllable), which is common in nursery rhymes. Children play games to this tune by having two players hold hands and make an arch with their arms while the others pass through in a single file. The “arch” is then lowered at the song’s end to “catch” a player. Behind these giggles and laughter, this song carries with it a deeply historical and social relevance. The meaning of the rhyme is not certain. It may simply relate to the many difficulties experienced in bridging the banks of the River Thames, but several alternative explanations have been put forward. Let’s explore these reasons, shall we? Just like the fate of any old structure, the most obvious explanation is that it deals with the dilapidation of London Bridge and attempts, realistically or fancifully, to repair it. Until the mideighteenth century, the Old London Bridge was the only crossing on the Thames in London. It was damaged in a major fire in 1633, but in the fire of 1666, this damage acted as a fire break and prevented the flames from further damaging the bridge and crossing to the south side of the Thames. With its 19 narrow arches, it impeded river traffic and flow. Central piers were removed to create a wider navigational span. Widening and the removal of its houses was completed

in 1763, but it remained relatively narrow and needed continual and expensive repairs. In the early nineteenth century, it was decided to replace the bridge with new construction. New London Bridge was opened in 1831 and survived until it was replaced in 1972. The old remnants of the bridge were then transported and reconstructed and to this day operational in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. A Viking attack is alternatively an exciting hypothesis of the origin of the rhyme that relates to the supposed destruction of London Bridge by Olaf II in 1014 (or 1009). The nineteenthcentury translation of the Norse saga the Heimskringla, published by Samuel Laing in 1844, included a verse by Óttarr Svarti, that sounds very similar to the nursery rhyme: “London Bridge is broken down…. Odin makes our Olaf win!” Contrary to written accounts, some historians have raised the possibility that the attack never took place. However, the original document detailing the attack was written only about 100 years after what would be a famous event in a highlypopulated area, leading the majority of historians to conclude that the account is at least relatively accurate. Perhaps the most ludicrous theory is that the nursery rhyme is about immurement, a form of imprisonment, usually until death, in which a person is sealed within an enclosed space with no exits. Alice Bertha Gomme (also repeated by Iona and Peter Opie) put forward the hypothesis that the song refers to the burying, perhaps alive, of children within the foundations of the bridge. This was based around the idea that a bridge would collapse unless the body of a human sacrifice was buried in its foundations and that the watchman is actually a human sacrifice, who will then watch over the bridge. Thankfully, there is no archaeological evidence for any human

remains within the foundations of London Bridge. … and in the refrain, who then is this mysterious “my fair lady”? Several attempts have been made to identify the fair lady, lady gay, or lady lee/ lea of the rhyme. The popular candidates are: First is the Virgin Mary: The nursery rhyme could allude to the Virgin Mary as the fair lady. The Viking attack was on 8 September 1009 (or 1014), the traditional birthday of the Virgin Mary; they burned the bridge but could not take the city, it was protected by the “fair lady.” Another candidate is Matilda of Scotland (c. 1080–1118) who was Henry I’s consort, who between 1110 and 1118 was responsible for the building of the series of bridges that carried the LondonColchester road across the River Lea and its side streams between Bow and Stratford. Lastly, it could be Eleanor of Provence (c. 1223–1291) a consort of Henry III, who had custody of the bridge revenues from 1269 to about 1281. Eleanor of Provence was also attacked with eggs and stones at the London bridge by the discontented citizens as her barge tried passing beneath the bridge. This was in response to the political discontent that had been created not only by King Henry III’s vast unpopularity at the time but was also sparked by his son King Edward I’s raiding of the Temple. Fast forward to modern times, the famous landmark that we commonly see in photos is actually called the Tower Bridge. The Victorian London Bridge that used to sit in between this and the now modern London Bridge, made of concrete and steel, assures us that London Bridge will never fall down (at least not for a really, really long time). ...and there will always be plenty of social media posts hashtagging the majestic #LondonBridge, for any and every fair lady.

OFW launches business using upcycled bottles

arolyn ‘Carlyn’ Aquino worked as preschool teacher and part-time beauty consultant for five years in Doha, Qatar until recession hit the Middle East. She lost her job and returned to the Philippines. With only P10,000 in her pocket, she opened a networking business, but lost money. When the pandemic struck in 2020, she worked as trainee in a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) company, but was not regularized. But Carlyn was unfazed. She kept conducting Bible studies for neighborhood children using what little she earned. Carlyn’s family also helped her cope. They bonded over a bottle of wine, until they ended up with a lot of wine bottles at home. One day, inspiration struck. Carlyn gave the bottles a new look by turning them into attractive lamps and giving them to friends. Her friends were beyond grateful. They urged her to make

a business out of the upcycled bottles. OBRA Philippines was born. Its first original product is OBRA de Lampara, an upcycled liquor bottle transformed into a battery-operated artisan lamp. Most of the materials – buri holder, abaca strings, jute strigs, coco rings and others – are recycled. This way, OBRA helps provide livelihood for indigenous people in Bicol province, Philippines. OBRA also helps low-income households in Marikina City, Philippines by buying their used bottles and boxes and using them as materials for artistic lamps and crafts. Happy customers have expressed their appreciation. Celebrity mom Christine Bersola-Babao created a video of her OBRA lamp and uploaded it together with three product shots, in her Facebook page. She described the products as “beautiful,” and asked followers to visit OBRA’s Facebook page.

OBRA was featured in The Filipino Channel and Jeepney TV’s Swak na Swak, and One PH and Radyo 5 92.3’s Magbadyet Tayo. OBRA pays it forward by allotting part of its earnings to We Care Ministry’s weekly feeding and Bible sessions for indigent children in Nangka, Marikina, Philippines. Some of the children were abandoned by parents caught in drug buybust operations. Recently, the company added a wedding collection product which can serve as illumined centerpiece in reception tables, and a solar-powered lantern one can hang on the home’s main door. Aside from Carlyn, OBRA’s CEO and chief designer, other officers are Dr. Regard Yakou, chief financial officer; Vien Villarica, communication officer and Anne Aquino, seamstress.
