Where are you going this summer? In just a few weeks, the summer months would be upon us. It would be time to go on our annual vacations for a much needed break. In this issue of EXPERIENCE TRAVEL + LIVING, we suggest a number of destinations that might help you plan your trip. The beach is an obvious choice for many holidayers. While a number of locations are perennially on the radar, some are not. For example, the Visayan isle of Siquijor might just be attractive for those who want to be far away from tourist traps. This small island barely registers in most people’s itineraries, serving merely as a stopover on a hop from Cebu to the island of Negros. Its reputation as a land of enchantment surely should make it attractive to sun worshippers.

J osep h C ortes E di tor-i n-chi ef

On the cover

On the other hand, Oslob in Cebu is quite famous for its whale sharks, one of the few places in the country where you can get into the water and see these gentle creatures up close. And no, that’s not all this town has. It has enough natural attractions to offer, from waterfalls to hills that are suitable for trekking. Vigan, which many might consider a heritage town, now has a themed resort that is the closest we could get to Africa in this side of Asia. Safari Hotel and Villas is located within the same property as same Baluarte Mini Zoo, and guests could have a close encounter with animals at almost any given time.

ibis Bangkok Riverside offers a modern look with quality service.

If a trip abroad is part of your plans, Bangkok never loses its charm. Whether you want to meditate at a temple, wander at some of the royal palaces, or simply stock up on goodies from its many emporiums, you will never run out of choices. Gyeongju in South Korea might be out of the way from either Seoul or Busan, but it was the center of the Silla Kingdom from 57 BC to 935 AD. Walking around the city and its many parks is like being at a museum, as remnants from the past co-exist with present-day structures. No matter your choice of destination, it would surely be an experience that you will look back on in the future. 4

Mews, the British-French restaurant in Salcedo Village, Makati City, is an original place. The clean, white surroundings, generously decorated with contemporary artworks, serve as a backdrop for beautiful platings of what might be considered standard continental fare: fish and chips, Guinness steak pie, truffle risotto, osso bucco, beef Wellington, grilled Caesar and tuna Niçoise salads, a selection of flatbreads and pasta, chicken liver mousse pate, and even Eton mess. But the emphasis here is on the use of locally sourced ingredients in creating these offerings. Chef Demar Regresado, who grew up in the United Kingdom, is intent on serving the best of what he knows how to cook for local diners. “Filipinos are quite fussy about food,” shares Regresado. “Many of them now go for healthier organic fare.” This combo is very East meets West, a formula followed Chef Demar Regresado

Your 2018 Journey

Fit and Fab, Healthy & Happy By Carmie d e L e o n

Carmie de Leon

Most are aware that health is wealth. But, who cares? YOLO, so eat whatever you like!

are coming from; if you don’t understand this, it’s fine. Some are blessings. Others are lessons.

Nope, there’s more to life than that. You are what you eat, and you are what you repeatedly do. Health is a personal commitment. It’s about the time you commit yourself.

Guard your circle

Fit doesn’t only mean a trim waistline, toned muscles or a curvaceous body. Health isn’t merely the absence of disease, but overall well being, that ability to live life to the fullest. This includes mental wellness, your relationship with yourself and with others. This year, do not start with very tall orders or ambitious to-dos that are bound to fail after a month. Just be more realistic. It’s as easy as having a beautiful mind.

Ever yone is a gif t Start with a clean slate, and forgive those who have hurt, offended, and disappointed you. Setbacks are set-ups. You’re being prepared for bigger and bolder breakthroughs. Forget about negative things from the past and obnoxious personalities who are still around you. Share your blessings by understanding where they

Stay away from people who belittle your ambitions. Small people do that, but the great ones make you feel that you are special and are capable of becoming greater. Make friends with people who are fun to be with, who believe that you can soar higher. When you find them, cherish and grow with them. Seek wisdom and learn from their successes and failures.

Embrace selflessness Be more generous in paying forward, extending yourself to others unselfishly. Whenever possible, throw people your sweetest smile, say thanks and excuse me, hear them out, cook for others, and share time, talent and energy. Recharge by reaching out. Times are difficult, so spend it by helping, sharing and inspiring others.

Care to commit to good health Choose to live a SEED life: Sleep; Eat right; Exercise;

De-stress. The preventive health cycle starts with SEED, followed by self-check (Be sensitive to what your body is saying.) and HealthcheQ (an annual physical examination, so you would know your numbers). Take charge of your health. What’s the use of dreaming big, if you don’t have a sound mind and body?

FAN is fun Flexible, Agile, No fear: as long as you have them, you will continue to shine and go forward, upward, and nonstop. Thrive on a fast-paced life by keeping yourself busy. No matter where you are in your journey or what you are into, move with fun. Don’t stop adapting, learning, and dreaming. Excite yourself by leveling up.

Demonstrate and declare Winners advertise themselves, not for the sake of boasting or bossing anyone around, but to demonstrate what God’s faithful servant can do to humanity. Encourage and enlighten by sharing exemplary experiences. Explore new things, overcome hurdles, and show them how you did it. Be an advocate. There’s more to an 8-to-5 job and your family. Serve the community by revealing your success story.

Balance out Make rules, modify rules, follow rules, and break some rules. Take time to assess and apply different strokes and situational leadership without compromising virtues and values. Balance self-improvement: work–family– society. Know when to be logical and irrational; it’s more like learning, un-learning and re-learning, and listening to the inner voice on a day-to-day basis.

Fire and loosen up There are so many things in life that we can’t control, so just do your best and let it flow. De-stress. Step out for eco-therapy or digital detox once in a while, preferably thrice a week. Walk with faith, and entrust the rest. Work confidently and secure, claiming that God has designed and predestined everything. Start your day right with a prayer. Nothing beats a thankful and grateful heart. Gratitude is the best attitude.

Take charge Own it. Say, “To be fit and fab, happy and healthy is up to me.” Believe in yourself and your limitless potential to do greater things. It starts and ends with you, and what you choose to be the new you. Strive to stretch out and outdo past achievements. Be more mindful and responsible with your health—physically, socially, mentally, financially, and spiritually. Be at peace and live in harmony with one another. Start with self-management. Make the complex simple. Just be the better version of yourself. As God lifts you up, humble down. Never assume to be right all the time, and never insist on fighting back. Learn to endure and mature with trials and lessons. Life is too short to be too stiff and unreasonably tough. Spend time gladdening the hearts of those you journey with. Health is being in the moment, mindfully choosing the best options, keeping in mind that we are all here to huddle and love one another. Enjoy the ride to your fit and fab, healthy and happy life.

Refrain from immediate reactions and negative interpretations. Stop complaining and making excuses. It weakens your brain. While everyone’s

rushing and everything’s getting urgent, sometimes it is better to play it cool. It’s OK to pause. It’s OK to wait for the right timing. It’s not just about hearing, but listening wholeheartedly, understanding others’ perspectives, and uncovering God’s message. In most cases, life is telling us to let go, and not getting into it is healthier.

Real Beauty Is Within Reach The Beauty Empire, a skincare and aesthetic center in Quezon City, offers beauty treatments, enhancement procedures and organic products that guarantee optimum results. Beauty Empire is the brainchild of Dorothy Joy Matulac who, as a young girl, wanted to become a flight attendant for an international carrier. She instead pursued a degree in hotel and restaurant management. She would later meet the man who would eventually help her discover a career that she was passionate about. “I’ve always loved beauty—not just physical beauty, but beauty in everything. Beauty relaxes the mind, but also inspires the imagination. So, I am drawn to anything and everything that is beautiful. When I met my husband, Dr. Alvin, who is a dermatologist, I was instantly drawn to his line of work,” says Maglutac. “My husband manufactures his own skin care and beauty products—soaps that address specific skin problems, serums, supplements, solutions for cleansing skin, toners, moisturizers and makeup—under the brand Professional Skin Care by Dr. Alvin. Although these products are already available nationwide, I thought of putting up a beauty and aesthetic center that uses only this brand. That was how Beauty Empire came about. Now, Dr. Alvin is already creating an exclusive line of products under the Beauty Empire brand,” she relates. “Beauty Empire is a business, but it is not just a business. My husband and I have made it our advocacy to give people of all ages and of all social backgrounds access to treatments that are normally not within easy reach of everyone without sacrificing quality of products, services and results. Making people happy makes us happy,” she explains.

Dorothy Joy Matulac

Some of the center’s signature treatments include an array of facials, like the popular celebrity facial, which includes cleansing, facial massage, steaming, and blackheads and whiteheads removal; oxygen infusion facial; Empire signature facial; and gold bio-collagen facial mask. For a clearer and cleaner complexion, also offered are warts removal and IPL hair removal. Non-invasive fat-burning therapies include cavitation and radio frequency procedures. The CC glow treatment gives the skin a semi-permanent foundation through an advanced skin pigmentation procedure using organic pigments. Those seeking healthier skin from the inside out can avail of the different intravenous procedures, such as the glutathione and vitamin C drips. Medical procedures offered include fillers (nasolabial, nose, chin augmentation, cheek augmentation, and lip augmentation), Botox treatments and Meso procedures. Likewise, Beauty Empire is making available the best quality glutathione and Garcinia cambogia. “Beauty Empire is dedicated to give the best treatments at the lowest possible prices, because we want to give everyone a fair chance to be the best versions of themselves. We at Beauty Empire, through our services and products, hope to develop confidence and a stronger sense of self-worth in everyone who comes to our doors,” she concludes. partnership between a hospital and a health maintenance organization. TMC Partner Care powered by Maxicare seeks to provide Filipinos a better option in terms of the delivery of quality, efficient medical services, and value for money that only TMC and Maxicare can provide. This full-risk, clinic-based healthcare plan covers both outpatient and inpatient services. It carries an Annual Benefit Limit (ABL) of P100,000 where pre-existing conditions, illnesses, and injuries that a member has experienced before the commencement of his HMO plan are covered. Sean Argos, Maxicare’s president and Chief Executive Officer, said “The goal of Maxicare is to provide convenient ways for members to access healthcare services.” A TMC Partner Care principal and his dependents and now bona fide Maxicare members could access various services in TMC hospitals and clinics, including all Maxicare Primary Care Centers (PCC) nationwide. Members are guaranteed superior quality and wider healthcare coverage through this plan. TMC Clinics and Maxicare PCCs are equipped with modern facilities and manned by skilled medical personnel capable of addressing a patient’s needs as in a hospital but at a lower cost. As for needed diagnostic, laboratory procedures or inpatient care in a TMC hospital, members simply need a referral from a TMC Clinic or Maxicare PCC physician prior to availing of the procedure.

The Medical City (TMC) and Maxicare Healthcare Corporation (Maxicare), both recognized leaders in the medical services industry, recently introduced a healthcare plan for TMC patients and Maxicare members that will revolutionize the delivery of medical services. The best things in life are the people we love, the places we’ve been with them, and the experiences we’ve shared with them along the way. Don’t you agree? My husband and I love to travel, and having a child didn’t stop us from doing what we love; in fact, it encouraged us to travel smarter. However, we do know that traveling with babies or toddlers could become chaotic and overwhelming. That’s why we made to sure to plan ahead—and as a project manager, this is my area of expertise: thinking about all possible scenarios, and how to deal with them. Why travel with a toddler, though? Where the Whale Sharks Swim

Oslob, a town located on the southeastern tip of Cebu, is best known for being the gateway to close encounters with whale sharks, known locally as butanding. The whale shark interaction area in Brgy, Tan-awan goes 50 meters out to sea, which is the butandings’ playground and where they interact with visitors who come to see them and, yes, swim with them, as well. No touching, though, as the visitors are specifically cautioned against when formally briefed before they set out from the shoreline for that incredible interaction with the sea creatures. The local government unit of Oslob municipality, in partnership with Tan-awan’s barangay officials and boatmen, have centralized butanding-related tourism activities to this part of Oslob’s shoreline in the past few years. There is a pavilion along the shore that houses a briefing area, where visitors pay the free, P300 for locals and P500 for foreigners, and are briefed about the do’s and don’ts of whale shark interaction. From there, visitors hop on to boats and taken out to sea. Encounters are only from 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,

which is about the time that the whale sharks gather in the area to be fed with krill or alamang by the officials. Such an arrangement allows the Oslob to earn money from this unique attraction and, at the same time, keep the butandings free to swim away in the afternoons.

Hiking to Water falls While the butandings are its main attraction, Oslob has more attractions to offer. For one, it has a few breathtaking waterfalls, including Tumalog Falls and Aguinid Falls in nearby Brgy. Tangbo, Samboan town. Part of the appeal of Aguinid Falls is the trek going up the waterfalls itself. It is really an adventure. On the other hand, the trip to Tumalog Falls via habal-habal is sure to get your adrenaline going. Mushroom-shaped rock formations shield the falls, allowing sunshine to peak through. It gives the place a dreamy ambience. They converge in Siquijor from all over the country during Holy Week for a local government-sanctioned, Catholic church-supported healing festival to hawk their services and products. In fact, it has grown so big that it now includes a musical show featuring several local bands on the night of Good Friday at that. (No, it’s not called Healingpalooza. Not yet, anyway.) Frequent Flyer From a young age, Rachel Alejandro has been traveling the world by C a rl o S. Suerte F el ip e

Rachel Alejandro is one of those individuals whose life was changed by travel. Traveling is one of the perks of being a singer; she and her father, ’70s OPM legend Hajji Alejandro, had been to several countries for concerts and performances. These opportunities exposed her to the wonders of going abroad. If it weren’t for singing, she couldn’t have afforded to go to faraway places at a young age. Even when she entered the food industry in 2004, as coowner of the diet and healthy food delivery service The Sexy Chef, Alejandro never stopped traveling. “It’s the one thing that I don’t feel one tinge of guilt about spending on,” she admitted. Yes, she would spend on her travels, but she would not shop on her journeys. Her constant trips made her even less materialistic. That is what she noticed when comparing how she traveled during her 20s and now. Back then, she recalled

All Around the World Say the name of a place in Europe or Asia or in the

Philippines, and chances are Alejandro might have been there either for work or leisure. She’s been around Spain, where her husband hails from. One of her recent trips with her aunt and a friend was to Santorini and Athens to see ancient relics and excavations. She loves going into the water, and has gone diving several times with her husband. When they were still dating, they went to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. On their honeymoon, they went to the Maldives. However, she still considers the beaches in the Philippines the best in the world.

Istanbul, Turkey

One of the experiences that she considers to be a major life event was the shark encounter during a trip to South Africa. “I was on the boat while my husband was inside a steel cage underwater, and the Great White shark was like a few feet away. I would recommend a trip to South Africa. It’s the best place for food and value for money. For me, the safari experience teaches you a lot, and the best time to go there is in wintertime. The animals won’t be hiding a lot,” she shared.

Santorini, Greece

But even though she’s been to so many places, there are still travel destinations she hasn’t ticked off of her list. “My number one bucket-list destination of all time has always been Egypt,” she said. “For some reason, it’s a place I feel like I’m connected to, but I really can’t explain why. I’ve always been interested in Egyptian culture and art. I’d also love to visit Jordan, especially Petra. Another dream destination is to dive the Tubbataha Reefs in Palawan.”

Exploring the City of Angels Bangkok first-timers chart a memorable weekend experience By Ruby As oy- Leba jo

Creating an authentic travel experience in Bangkok is a must. Well-known for its vibrant street life and cultural landmarks, it isn’t surprising why Thailand’s capital is a favorite destination for many foreign tourists. Its attractions are endless: dazzling temples, thrilling tuk-tuk rides, boats to the floating market or just to cross the Chao Phraya River, shopping sprees at chic emporiums, and tasting culinary delights with their fresh and unforgettable flavors, savored at either fine dining restaurants or street-side stall. It is an amazing place with something for everyone. If you are a first-timer here, exploring the city without a guide is part of the challenge. How many charming and unforgettable locations will you find without losing your way? It’s fun to make your way around in a foreign country and return safely to the comfort of your hotel at the end of the day. That is truly an accomplishment. This is what we discovered on a trip to the City of Angels, in partnership with the Erawan Group, ibis, and Mercure Thailand. True enough, a fun-filled getaway here is accessible at almost every street corner.

A Museum Without Walls Gyeongju City is at the center of ancient Silla dynasty Text and photos by MA. GLAIZA LEE

One of the reconstructed buildings of the Donggung Palace

The tomb is part of the Gyeongju Historic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that embodies the history and culture of Gyeongju. This southern Korean province is relatively small in terms of population and geographic size, compared to the other Korean provinces. However, its size doesn’t mean it is lacking. The small city has big treats to offer. Anapji is a gorgeous pond inside Donggung Palace, where the Crown Prince of United Silla Kingdom resided.

“Did he just say Kim Shin?” a female tourist asked her companion, referring to the fictional general who was turned into a goblin in the recent hit Korean drama. Shaking his head, her companion replied: “You’ve heard it wrong. The lady guide said General Kim Yushin, not Kim Shin. He was known as the hero of Silla Kingdom, which is one of the three ancient kingdoms of Korea.” The two friends were visiting the Tomb of Kim Yushin, a large tomb measuring roughly 30 meters in diameter. Surrounding the tomb are the relief carvings of the gods of the Oriental zodiac. The grandeur and elaborateness of the tomb underscore the great contributions of the late general in unifying the Three Kingdoms.

Into the Silla Kingdom Touring this historic place is not as complicated as one would think. All you need is a means of going around and a sense of adventure. There are city buses that stop at major tourist sites. But the best way is by bicycle. Bike rental shops are everywhere in the downtown area. The fee ranges from 5,000 to 7,000 won for a whole day. The streets around the historic sites are sights to behold. Take, for instance, the street leading to General Kim Yushin’s tomb, called Heungmu-ro, which is considered one of the 100 Most Beautiful Streets in Korea. When spring comes, cherry blossoms give the street a scenic view: just imagine the beautiful, romantic scene of petals falling down when the breeze blows as you take a walk or go for a drive. Most structures and artifacts during the Silla Kingdom,

the longest dynastic period in Korean history, with its 56 kings ruling over a span of 992 years, became important treasures, not only of Gyeongju, but of Korea. Gyeongju, which was the capital of Silla Kingdom, has 52 designated cultural assets. One of the enduring structures in Silla is the Cheomseongdae, which literally means Stargazing Tower. Measuring 9.17-meters high, with the base stone on each side at about 5.35-meters, it is the world’s oldest surviving astronomical observatory tower. Designated as National Treasure No. 31 in 1962, it was once used for observing the stars to forecast the weather. The pavilion stone was used to decide the directions, where north, south, east and west are, and determined when the vernal equinox, autumnal equinox, winter solstice and summer solstice they would be. The cylindrical-shaped structure made from granite blocks has 12 blocks at its lowest level, signifying the months of the year. There are 30 levels representing the number of days in a month. The whole structure has 362 blocks, symbolizing the total number of days in a lunar year, including the leap day. At night, this is a good spot to watch the stars. Unobscured by city lights and tall skyscrapers, the evening stars twinkle amid the autumn sky.

A Walk Down Historical Lanes A stone’s throw away is the Banwolseong, or Half-Moon Fortress, a crescent-shaped set of earthworks that marks the site of an old Silla royal palace. In spring, beautiful cherry blossoms give shade to the old palace site, while the surrounding is transformed into fields of bright yellow rape flowers. Turn east of Cheomseongdae to find one of the most beautiful ponds in Korea, Anapji Pond. Constructed during the reign of King Munmu in 674, this gorgeous manmade feature was once a favorite relaxation spot for Silla kings. During the day, you can closely observe the architectural details. But at night, the whole place transforms into a magical diorama. The pond and its surrounding structures make for one of Korea’s most photogenic night scenes. While touring around Gyeongju, notice the round burial mounds, locally called tumuli. There are about 200 tumuli in Gyeongju, but the best place to see them is at Daereungwon, a huge park complex housing 23 tumuli, which is probably the largest concentration of mounds from Silla Kingdom in one area. Only a few of the tombs are unidentified, including the

Michuwangneung Tomb, the final resting place of King Michu, the 13th ruler of the Silla dynasty. Then, there is the Cheonmachong, a burial site named after the Cheonmado (Heavenly Horse) painting that was excavated from the tomb in 1973. The burial site is believed to be the tomb of an unknown Silla king who reigned in the 5th century. When it was excavated, over 10,000 artifacts were found, including the Geumgwan, the largest and most magnificent of the Silla gold crowns found to date. The excavated artifacts from Cheonmachong, as well as those from Anapji Pond, are exhibited at Gyeongju National Museum. Housing the permanent collection of the Silla kingdom’s most expansive and valuable treasures, the museum’s regular exhibits are open to the public. At the museum, check out the Seongdeokdaewangsinjong (Divine Bell of King Seongdeok), a giant bronze temple bell made in the 8th century, as well as the Buddhist art from the Silla period and the intricate model of the nine-story wooden pagoda of Hwangnyongsa Temple.

Temple Run If you are planning to stay in Gyeongju for several days or even just a weekend, devote a day for a temple tour. From the bus stop across the Gyeongju Intercity Terminal,

take Bus No. 10 or 11 and get off at Bulguksa Temple. On the slopes of Mt. Toham lies the Buddhist monastery of Bulguksa and the Seokguram Grotto, both of which are designated UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. Constructed in 774, Bulguksa, which means Temple of the Buddhist Country, is a large complex built with exquisite masonry, reflecting its role as the spiritual and cultural backbone of the Silla Kingdom. It sits upon a high stone platform, connected to the ground by a stone staircase, which was believed to be the link between the temporal world (ground floor) and the spiritual world (the raised area of the temple). If you visit the temple, look for the six National Treasures that can only be found here, such as the Dabotap and Seokgatap pagodas located in front of the Daeungjeon Hall in the main courtyard, the marvelous stone staircases leading to the main precinct, and the two Silla-era bronze Buddhas. From the Bulguksa, take Bus No. 12 to Seokguram Grotto. This site houses the 3.5-meter tall Seokgamoni Buddha that has been delicately carved of rough granite. A tour around Gyeongju will always be filled with history lessons, remembering the years gone by and experiencing what this Korean southern city has to offer.

A merry Mexican fiesta By Suzette Jessica

When we talk of celebrations, fiestas are top of mind. And what could be more festive than a Mexican-themed birthday party for Guatemala Consul Amelia “Mellie” Ablaza, held at the Ablaza’s grand hacienda in Alfonso, Cavite? With the support of her loving husband Zambia Consul Louie Ablaza and masterminded by her son avant-garde artist and fashion designer Jun Jun Ablaza, it was an evening of dance, music, fashion and art one associates with Latin America. To the delight of her guests, Mellie emerged in an antique gold tunic printed with a portrait of famous Mexican painter Frida Khalo, her head crowned with a garland of blush-colored blooms. Guests enjoyed the Hungarian Deputy Chief of Mission David Ambrus, Ablaza and Kata Kondar
