Publisher’s Note Every issue of Experience Travel & Living is not bereft of challenges. Nothing or no one is perfect, right? But whatever we encountered in our journey, we faced them all with a smile, a fervent heart, and a passion to make every issue simple yet exceptional, and that alone was already an achievement. This is the reason why for this issue, we endeavored to make it impactful despite its simplicity, just like the spirit of the holidays: simple, joyful and meaningful. For this, we profusely thank our advertisers and supporters and more importantly, our readers. And this 2019, we look forward to another better and prosperous New Year for Experience Travel and Living, while we pray and hope to contribute to make the Philippine tourism and travel industry remain vibrant and dynamic and soon, get to make this home-grown magazine, either in print or online, bring local news and happenings to an international audience. I’d say it is very much doable. Watch out for it this 2019!

ED ITO R ’ S NOT E

Editor’s Note Like a child, I look forward to all kinds of holidays, because it’s a good excuse to get together with family and friends. Such gatherings are like bright lights at the end of the tunnel. Amid all of life’s challenges, deep inside I know that things will always get better, because there will always be opportunities for love and laughter. No matter what happens the sun will always rise tomorrow, marking the beginning of a new day, a new hope for every one. I have come to realize that even at the darkest hour, the light will eventually come. Amid the nonstop parties and the gift-giving spree, the holidays always send a very strong message of hope. For some of us, it may not be the best of times. Yet the joy of the season is so strong and contagious, problems are put aside to make way for good tidings. Apart from the feelings of hope and happiness, it is also a season of miracles. This issue is extra special because we attempted to capture the spirit of giving in the next few pages. The joyful season may have ended, but thanks to the magic of printed word, it can stay in our lives for as long as we want. Every time we pick up this issue, we remind ourselves that hope is very much alive. And if we live by this spirit every day, then we can look forward to a happy and fulfilling 2019. Peace & Prosperity to all!

t’s a time for good food, gift giving and spending wonderful moments with loved ones. It doesn’t really matter if we had a roller coaster year, like children we all look forward to Christmas and the festive excitement of the joyous season. Unfortunately, all that gift-buying and party planning bring about unwanted stress. Instead of arriving happy and excited for your family reunion, you look harassed and miserable because you stood in the cashier line for hours or it took forever till you found a parking space. The holiday fever has a downside, and if we are not mindful of our actions, it might end up being a not-somemorable Christmas. Before we completely miss out on the real essence of giving here are some tips on how to have a very merry Christmas amid the traffic, long queues and hangovers.

H OLI DAY WE L L NE S S The Pinoy Porchetta hamper of Resorts World Manila comes with starters, sidings and Christmas pudding.

Schedule a pampering session in between that busy shopping calendar Include a luxurious spa session in your to-do list this holiday season. Those mall trips and party nights can be very draining. It is important to feel refreshed amid all the Christmas frenzy. Besides, everybody deserves a break, especially during Christmas.

Avoid the rush, check out weekend bazaars and online stores Instead of facing the mall mob head-on, why not check out weekend bazaars and online stores? The bazaar scene is more laid back, although it is still safer to come early to avoid the crowd. Most of the time the booths are manned by the owners, so you can always negotiate for deals. Online stores are perfect for a stress-free shopping, simply fill up your virtual shopping cart, check out, choose the payment mode, and wait for their courier to deliver your goods.

FIVE STAR RELAXATION. The Dusit Room inclusive of buffet breakfast for 2 adults and 2 children, 20% discount on F&B outlets

Order out and avoid kitchen stress Instead of spending hours preparing Christmas dishes in the kitchen, why not order dishes from your favorite hotel or restaurant? Most establishments have party packs or gourmet hampers, which can make your holiday spread extra special. Go ahead enjoy your favorite wine as your guests feast on the culinary treats prepared by the country’s top chefs. Gatherings are meant to make you feel good, not stress you out.

Holiday Staycation Treat yourself to a well-deserved break by spending the night in your favorite hotel. Sometimes we need to escape from our usual routine environment in order to refocus our thoughts and energize our minds. Too much activities at home can lead to sleepless nights, something we cannot afford during the busy season. Enjoy the perks of sleeping late and savoring a quiet breakfast at your own pace. If you are in the mood to indulge, then reserve the Presidential Suite and have a royal weekend. For the budget-conscious, there are cozy city hotels

where you can unwind and relax for a few days, before you resume your Christmas activities.

Take home Lola Virginia’s Chicken Relleno from Romulo’s Café in Quezon City, Jupiter st. Makati or Alabang.

Don’t forget your workout routine You will need to burn all those rich holiday treats. Apart from staying fit, a physical activity can give you that much-needed mental relief from all the Christmas chaos and stress. There are gyms that stay open during the holidays. You can also check out those fun Christmas workouts online. Maybe you can do your High Intensity Interval Training to the tune of “All I Want For Christmas.”

Give gifts that feed the soul Instead of the usual gifts, volunteer or give a donation in the name of your friend or family member. You can donate to your friend’s favorite cause or charity. Local chapters of World Wide Fund (WWF) or United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund allow online donations. It has been proven that the act of giving, no matter how big or small instantly boosts our mood. According to research, giving is related to reduced blood pressure and enhanced sleep.

Listen to instrumental holiday music

ORTIGAS STAYCATION. Stay at Bleu Hotel sfor as low as 2500++ a night.

The season is marked by festive music, but have you tried listening to the instrumental version? Music certainly soothes the brain. In fact, slow tunes can reduce heart rate thereby allowing the body to relax. Try including instrumental tunes on your play list to free your mind from stress. Pleasurable listening also releases Dopamine which helps the brain function.

Binge watch Christmas movies Drown all your stress by watching romantic Christmas comedies. Everybody loves a happy ending and Christmas movies are known to be filled with love, laughter and happily ever after. Netflix and Hallmark channels are showing nonstop Christmas movies all throughout the season. Take a break from the hectic party scene and have a dose of light romance. This will give you a good reason to stay home and relax.

1

Take it slow. Don’t run with the rest. Spend more time with yourself, meditate and reflect on the reason for the season. Lest we forget, Christmas is all about love, peace and forgiveness. It’s fine to join the bandwagon of smart shoppers but at the end of the day, try to look at the gifts, the more important part is how you will give it. It’s the giver, not the gift.

focus - it’s about love.

5

Care to customize. Shop around and go for tailor- fit gifts. Create one if you have the time. Take advantage of extra hours and use your creativity in appreciating the people who made your year right. Pay back, in whatever sweet way you can.

miles away.

7

Choose memory over money. Spend generously and celebrate. Memories are forever, moments aren’t coming back so go, spare more time and energy with your loved ones. Eat, laugh, get drunk with the ones you love.

8

Write how the year went and how you envision the next 12 months. Guide your soul by clearing your mind. What went well and what went beyond expectations? Jot them down and reflect on it. Discover how you can respond to the evolving needs of your family and society. Let your past experiences be your ammo for a better you.

2

Pig it out, but let it all out. Be mindful of what and how much you eat and what you burn after. Eat anything in moderation. It’s party time, everyone’s feasting and you can’t be anti- social to resist high fat, high sugar gastronomic moments. Make sure you burn those calories. Walk around, jump, stretch, run or play.

9

Shortlist your master list. Focus on what’s relevant, behavior changing and inspiring. Use your energy wisely by choosing activities and friendships. Party hard but learn to discern and say “No” if needed. Your body needs enough rest. Remember SEED lifestyle. Sleep, Eat right, Exercise, De-stress.

3

If you will travel, travel light. Don’t complicate by doing a lot of activities. Simple relaxation and exploration will do, so you have enough space to breathe in/ breathe out. Choose off peak days to enjoy the tour. Tap the unexplored but make sure to read reviews and testimonials on comfort and safety.

6

Tech Savvy? Engage and connect. Find time to reach out to old friends and relatives, classmates and former office mates. Search and surprise them with “thanksgiving wishes” waves and hellos. It is always sweet to know that someone remembers us, even if they are

4

Keep your cool. The more patient you are, the more beautiful life gets. With horrendous traffic and limited parking lots, fully- booked restaurants, it is so easy to get upset and dismayed. Don’t lose your

10

Be a blessing. Donate something, talent and energy to charity. Try to figure out institutions that may need your help. Refill your love tank by establishing connections to the less-privileged and use your network to bridge gaps and build stronger lives.

Delight yourself, look at the best days, wrap up this Christmas season. Of all the days and holidays, this is the time to give thanks and praise, dance and rejoice. Healthy holidays start from within, so take time to re-shape 2019 and design your strategy now that you’ve extra time out of office or routine. Don’t consume all the days shopping, allocate time for self- awareness and alignment of purpose. This is the best time to offer yourself to God’s amazing blessings by looking back at how the years have been, and how you should move on and claim more breakthroughs. As we joyfully do the right but seemingly uncomfortable things, we submit ourselves to His pleasant surprises. Slow down and feel the magical moment, the birth of Jesus Christ.

Martin Villamor: Cool Mayor of Cebu’s Nature Haven With its vast fresh water supply, lush vegetation and soon-to-open theme park, Carmen is set to be the top weekend getaway in Cebu By Ruby Asoy-Lebajo

M

“ 28

ayor Martin Gerard Villamor has fulfilled his vision for the town of Carmen, Cebu. Composed of 21 barangays the town’s assets lie on its forests teeming with springs that support the endangered bare back fruit bats, nocturnal cats and other flora and fauna. Now on his last term and eighth year in office, Villamor realized that he can’t do everything. “I still have a lot of unfinished business,” he shared during an exclusive interview with Experience Travel and Living magazine at the Carmen municipal office. His topmost agenda is to make Carmen a top tourist destination in the province of Cebu by focusing on ecotourism. “We are halfway there with the opening of Cebu Safari, the establishment of several monasteries for faith tourism, and the development of a road network leading to these destinations.” He will also set up the Carmen Marina that will cater to yachts and small boats, hopefully all these will turn the town into a first-class municipality. The town will also be the home of the biggest Aqua Intergalactic theme park owned by Bantigui Leisure Resort. Located in Barangay Luyang, Carmen, the 5-hectare development project will boast of inflatable facilities for swimming and other sports activities. The park is expected to be completed in two years’ time.

Classroom shortage has been addressed, thanks to the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation.

Despite being an agricultural town, Villamor said a good food security plan has yet to be implemented. “We try to maintain our town to be green, with lots of agricultural lands to plant crops such as corn for food security.” Aside from fishing and agriculture livelihood, employment opportunities are now available for the people of Carmen with the growing number of businesses in the area.

He advocated for wider roads 20 years ago but unfortunately, land prices have gone up. However, he proudly claimed their barangay roads are better than most towns in Cebu. Education is also a focal point. He

stressed that the lack of education can hamper the town’s growth. Classroom shortage has been addressed already in most barangays. “To date we only lack 10 or 20 classrooms, thanks to our partner, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation.”

A peaceful town There are no drug-related problems in Carmen. Minor incidents and petty crimes are immediately addressed by the law enforcers. In terms of infrastructure, the Mayor is concerned about the narrow roads that are contributing to Carmen’s traffic woes. EX PER I EN C E T R AV EL AN D LI VI N G

challenge is his ability to relate to people of all types. “As mayor you have to say yes. I seldom say no, I want to please everybody as much as I can. To be frank about it, I want to be real and truthful as possible with many people as possible.”

Heeding the call of politics

Mayor Villamor is always happy to welcome visitors at Carmen.

Last year, the town placed second among communities with high incidence of malnutrition. This year Carmen went down to 22 or 23. Villamor is happy with this development and has since then assigned a dedicated health unit to monitor the issue. Another concern to be resolved is water availability. “Many wanted to have water but don’t pay their bills so I decided to look for a private supplier to supply water to everyone,” he said. Right now, they have a grandstand near the plaza, partly funded by the water company. They built a sports facility so people will not be involved in bad activities.

Trust and Confidence As he sets the vision and pace for the development for Carmen, Villamor has learned to trust the people around him. “They know how to do their job. Because of the trust, I seldom call for a meeting. I only call them when they have problems to report to me,” he quipped.

The down-to-earth mayor is adamant in pursuing a “zero-corruption” policy in his office. The “Transparency Seal” has been posted in the municipality’s website indicating its compliance. “When state auditors come here, I always tell them that they should dig deeper.” He is known to be very approachable. He’s at work almost every day, answering questions and addressing barangay problems from the town plaza and not from his office at the municipal building. He signs papers in the morning and attends to several meetings. He usually keeps his afternoons free. His management style is unconventional. His simple manner of dressing reflects his laid-back approach to life. “My routine is almost the same every day with my glass of beer that helps me unwind,” he laughed. “What people love about me is that ‘this is who I am, they know that I’m gay, that I drink beer.’” Definitely the people will credit him for the town’s development, but the biggest

Villamor took up architecture at the University of San Carlos and became a successful businessman. He had a gasoline station, and was also involved in construction and distributorship. But he gave them all up to be the campaign manager of his dad, Virginio, when he ran for mayor in Carmen. His dad was the municipal mayor for nine years, vice-mayor for three years, and the mayor again for five years. Villamor had no plans of being in politics because of his temperament. He is very strict, a trait which is not exactly acceptable in public service. But as the years pass he learned to adjust. He is the 12th mayor of Carmen, “hopefully not the 13th,” he quipped, saying he now wants to give other people a chance to serve the town. He is looking to run for councilor to help protect his legacy and other projects. He is the eldest of seven siblings, with two adopted kids. “They (siblings) look older than me. My secret there is that when I get mad, I throw everything. All out ‘yan. After that, I will be fine. I don’t sleep on it. My staff would check on me if ‘may sapot pa ba si mayor’ (is mayor still mad)?’” But unlike most of his other siblings and friends he does not travel much. He wants to experience traveling from Saint Petersburg to Vladivostok in Russia by train. But for now his heart remains in Carmen, Cebu. “I don’t want to make Carmen a city because the land taxes will get higher. I want it to remain a small, but a first-class municipality no less,” he concluded.

Just a few blocks away from SM Aura, Martin Place Social is the perfect place to wine and dine after a busy day. The restaurant may seem like an ordinary dining place but it is actually one of the few places in Bonifacio Global City that offers reasonablypriced dishes. The dishes are Australian-based but transmuted with Filipino, Mexican and Spanish influences, thanks to the chef and his students

dishes before were brought straight from the supermarket. But those were the early days of operation. Now every dish served is made from scratch. No powder flavorings, the ingredients come from sustainable sources, the kitchen staff bakes the breads and every recipe is tried, tested and consistent. Diners also have the option to sit either near the bar or the kitchen. What’s on the menu? The main offerings of Martin Place Social include baked Atlantic salmon (served with red rice, corn relish and corn puree), organic grilled chicken breast (with gnocchi, shiitake mushroom and sweetcorn), Bogan beef burger using Aussie wagyu beef, and grilled lamb shoulder. For dessert, they have cheescake, panna cotta, creme brûlée, brownies and even pancakes - all made from scratch. While the main dining place has a fixed menu, the second floor houses the Ausphin International Institute Philippines and the Sydney Room, a learn-and-dine area. The menu varies depending on the chef ’s preference. The chefs can set up a small kitchen there and cook the dishes in front of the guests. One unique feature of the Sydney Room is that it allows customers to bring the meat of their choice, and ask the chefs and the students to prepare a special dish. Chef Golding said this gives students the opportunity to prepare premium ingredients like foie gras or steaks. ravel Business Exchange (TBEX) Pilipinas 2018 tackled the issue of sustainable tourism in their annual 2-day seminar this year. With the theme “Creating a Responsible Travel Business Line,” the highlight was the seminar entitled “The World Begs for Sustainability, The World Needs You.” Seminar speakers were former Secretary of the Department of Tourism (DOT) Dr. Mina Gabor, a staunch advocate of responsible tourism, who spoke about the country’s readiness in addressing the issue. Rodne Galicha, Country Manager of The Climate Reality Project Philippines and world-renowned protector of the earth, shared his views on the importance of sustainable tourism, and Randy Durband, Chief Executive Officer of the Sustainable Tourism Council, discussed how the Philippines can be a global sustainable tourism destination.

Robert Lim Joseph, Chairman of the Network of Independent Travel Agencies and Allied Services (NITAS), said that responsible and sustainable tourism was initially led by the private-sector, but now several communities have developed their own programs to support the call for the protection of the enviroment. He shared his plans for a massive Manila Bay cleanup, with the help of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the water companies in order to get the attention of government. He believes everyone will benefit from the clean-up. “I want to recommend that the President (Duterte) do something about the informal settlers along the city’s waterways like the rivers, esteros. If this can be done within the next three years developers can build the appropriate infrastructure. There will be rules and regulations so that the garbage will not be thrown in the water. Even the settlers will be taught

waste segregation, composting and other activities designed to reduce waste and help save the environment,” he explained, adding that responsible and sustainable tourism cannot be done by a few. “It took Europe a long time,” he said. “Because of what was done in Boracay, there are now efforts to make waterways and sewage systems cleaner. Now, hotels and resorts have put up their own sewage treatment systems. Everything has to be
a concerted effort among stakeholders, especially in the provinces. With sustainable tourism, we can use and re-use. For example in farms animal wastes are reused as fertilizer for organic and chemical-free produce.“ “With responsible tourism, we can implement what we have only dreamt before, and the Manila Bay project will be the starting point. It’s a monumental project, but if we can dream, why don’t we dream big? We don’t just put these dreams on paper; we put them into action,” said Joseph, who is also a diplomat, author, motivational speaker, event organizer, and wine connoisseur. He is the Chairman of the Philippine Wine Merchants and its retail arm, Ralph’s Wine Merchants, and Columbia Transport. TBEX Pilipinas 2018 also gathered suppliers and local buyers on the second day for a Business-to-Business (B2B) meeting to promote tourism products and packages. It was headed by Angel Ramos Bognot, Project Director and Afro Asian World Events president and also a

Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events (MICE) expert. The buyers included retail and wholesale travel agents while the sellers were local and foreign airlines, hotels, restaurants, resorts and spas, hospitals, and transport operators. “What we love is that these mediumsize companies can easily organize bigvolume tour packages that can fill up airline seats quickly. We’re happy that they all came and established networks with buyers as they all geared up for expanding their business horizon and create productive and long-term partnerships,” Angel pointed out. Through the workshop, companies were made aware of the impact of sustainable tourism on their businesses, while advocating promotion of Philippine culture, heritage, food and destination. “These are all part and parcel of sustainable tourism. We all show our love for the environment and create a future for responsible and sustainable tourism in the country.” The 2-day event culminated with an exciting Gala Night that included the presentation of the 2018 Travel Girl and announcement of the preliminary plans for TBEX Pilipinas 2019. or jewelry designer Ivonne Pedragoza Ricaña of Ivona Fine Jewelry, nothing is more elegant and esteemed than jewelry pieces made of pearls, diamonds and other gemstones. For the former paralegal who loves to draw and learned the rudiments of jewelry design on her own, jewelry is practically life itself. Ivonne started by creating fashion jewelry and accessories that combined several crystals. After some time she shifted to natural South Sea pearls because she believes pearls are timeless and very versatile. It can be paired with anything, for any occasion. “Even if you wear a simple dress, a simple pearl stud, it will make it very beautiful and elegant.” Eventually she moved to custom jewelry. “For my designs, I always create something special or emotionally uplifting that will set a happy mood, or even healing using gemstones like amber and ruby. But I am very partial to pearls because they

symbolize timeless beauty and an elegant and beautiful woman inside and out,” says Ivonne, who counts her daughter, love of family and her support team as her design inspirations.

Natural is better Ivona Fine Jewelry, which was launched in August 2017, is known for the all-natural diamonds, pearls and

gemstones. Natural diamonds are about 60 percent more expensive than the cultured ones, but the quality is different, same with pearls. “Natural ones last longer than cultured. They take several years before they are formed, unlike cultured ones that take only 6 months to a year to create. Same with natural South Sea pearls that have no fixed number of years before they are harvested, so only a few are produced,

which makes it more expensive.” She collaborated with a British jeweler, a diamonds specialist, to create designs unique to Ivona, mostly South Sea pearls with natural diamonds. “We wanted Ivona to be known for natural diamonds and South Sea pearls that are not grown in any laboratory or cultured in any way. Those who know their jewelry know the difference. We also sell natural rubies, blue sapphire, emerald, and onyx.”

Pearls of the Orient Pearls come in sizes like perfect round, oval, baroque, button, drop. She said if it’s baroque, it can still be made into a necklace. They are naturally formed and very solid so if they break, it’s not natural. Ivonne said Philippine South Sea pearls are natural and exceptionally beautiful and very marketable globally because of its authenticity and high quality. They are naturally abundant here. “I

used to buy in Hong Kong but moved to Zamboanga or Tawi-Tawi. When it comes to authenticity of South Sea pearls, nothing beats the Philippines.” She admired the fact that majority of local farmers are honest and will never sell fake pearls. “When you buy from them, you can see the smile in their eyes, that they sold something really special aside from the earnings.”

Exciting trends Trends in 2018 are the statement pieces like earrings, rings, bangles, anklets, layered necklaces. The most saleable pieces are big pearl earrings ranging from 15 mm to 18 mm, and layered necklaces, or big diamonds with gemstones as centerpiece (wedding or engagement rings). “For 2019, we’re looking at more artistically designed pieces to be the trend, or those that show empowerment like pearls, which is hard and durable, to show one’s strong will and resolve.”

The jewelry business is very lucrative but very challenging, yet it continues to flourish as Philippine design and craftsmanship continue to earn global praise. Ivona pieces are passionately and skillfully crafted by local artisans working closely with her foreign partner to ensure that they follow international standards in terms of perfection in design and quality. “When you buy Ivona, you only get the best in terms of standards of quality because we follow the best global standards,” Ivonne emphasized, and also revealed that they are now in negotiations to open a new store to be located at one of the five-star hotels in Makati. Ivona Fine Jewelry is located at 2/3 Mid-level East Wing, Shangri-La Plaza Mall, Mandaluyong City. Call (+63) 917-6365120. The skin spa has two outlets in Los Angeles, California. O Skin’s glittery client list includes Miss World 2013 Megan Lynne Young from the Philippines, 2012 Miss Universe 1st runnerup Janine Tugonon, 2013 Miss Universe 2nd runner-up Ariella Arida, Kapamilya stars Dimples Romana and KC Concepcion, and A-List Hollywood celebrities Patti Austin and Telma Hopkins. Even 2015 Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach follows Miss O on Instagram. Lovingly called “Miss O,” Olivia recalls her humble beginning when she emigrated to the US to study cosmetology, which led to more advanced aesthetician courses. In 2003, Ms O rented a small room with one bed at Lody’s Styling Center in a strip mall. She called it O Skin Care. Center owner Lody Garcia was amazed at the young aesthetician who worked very hard every day. “The owner charged such a small rent; I’m sure she spent more cooking food and feeding me almost every day” Olivia says. “She was like a mother to me.” While running her business Ms. O completed several courses to complement her Business Administration degree from De La Salle University, Philippines. She found time to take post-graduate courses from the American Institute of Esthetics, International Dermal Institute, Visual Changes Academy, and John Robert Powers International. In time Olivia opened two O Skin Med Spa outlets in the Los Angeles area: Cerritos Mall at 369 Los Cerritos Center, Cerritos, CA 90703; and Eagle Rock Mall at 2700

To God be the glory Olivia owes all the blessings in her life right now to tithing, which is the practice of giving to the church 10 percent of one’s income. She said that when she started, her space was so small, like a kitchen or stock room. Then she said the Lord taught her about tithing. “The Lord says, if you want to be blessed, then follow me.” “I had doubts about it. And I asked myself ‘is this for real?’ Malachi Chapter 3, Verse 10 says: ‘Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.’” Olivia says she couldn’t understand tithing at first when she became a Christian but she still followed the principle. She practiced tithing for a year, but nothing happened. She still earned U$500.00 dollars and really worked hard for seven days. She said the Lord wants us to be a cheerful giver. Over the years she realized that a cheerful giver is someone who doesn’t wait for anything in return. Olivia says: “I am so thankful that the Lord taught me on the aspect of tithing. And I learned, only 3 to 6 percent of churchgoers practice tithing. Finally from US$500 a week, it became U$1,000 a week. And then it grew more.” Tithing has become a habit for her that she even told her accountant never to commit a mistake in tithing. She always reminds her EX PER I EN C E T R AV EL AN D LI VI N G

accountant that it’s okay to commit mistakes in accounting but not in tithing, where she pledged to the Lord that she will tithe her whole life. Olivia says that the Lord tells us to rest on the seventh day so she promised the Lord not to work on a Sunday and offered the day to Him. But since she is so hardworking there are times when work would lead up to Sunday. But when she gets home, she would still feel empty despite the additional income so from thereon, she promised not to work on a Sunday. “I think the Lord does not want us to be in the middle. It’s either you are for me or against me.” But the challenge to work on a Sunday did not stop there. A friend called her up and told her that a powerful person wants to try facial and wants it on a Sunday. “Oh no!” says Olivia. She had no choice but to turn it down. She made lots of excuses, saying that it’s quality time for her family. She put down the phone and asked herself if she did the right thing, considering the money it will pull in. “But I told myself it’s for the Lord. I cannot really work on a Sunday anymore.” It takes a lot of obedience before you are blessed, says Olivia, who adds that sins block blessings so people really have to pray to the Lord for help in work and how to be good people. She emphasized that when one trusts the Lord, everything will turn out fine. Ask and you shall receive so every day, people need to pray to the Lord every detail of our heart’s desires. Olivia reveals that she and her husband Jason waited for five years before they got a baby which, for many couples, is a long time. But they patiently waited and prayed for a child every day. Out of the blue, the couple bought diapers and after a week, she got pregnant, 44

and named their baby “Faith,” and then their second baby “Timothy.” “You have to put your faith first. And then He says ‘prepare a room.’ It simply means to prepare yourself for His blessings. Sometimes we don’t believe. We had to believe first before we see it,” says Olivia. She said that if people will hold to His promise, it will come because the Lord will never disappoint anyone. “The Lord will just bring you from glory, to glory, to glory. There will be trials of course. But if you will surpass that, the Lord will bless you a hundred fold.”

Olivia also encourages people to offer their confidence to the Lord. She narrated that one time, she had a 40-something client who had many pimples on her face and whom she treated every two weeks for the next six months, yet nothing changed. Prior to that, she treated clients for several months and their pimples were gone in one, two or three months, except this one. So she prayed to the Lord, the first time she offered a patient to Him. After one week, the patient called and told her that her skin has improved. She did not believe it at first, but when they finally met, she only had two pimples! Since then, Olivia has offered her patients with serious skin problems to the Lord, for Him to please take care of everything, that He’s just one prayer away.

A lot to be thankful for

Beyond business, Olivia is so thankful for the Lord’s intervention when their marriage was in crisis, which she said was already dead. She mentioned that they were in a relationship for 16 years and 13 of those years were husband and wife. To many people, they may look okay, she said, but they are not aware of what really happened in the past. She believes that God can really resurrect the dead so if one has a dead marriage, He can resurrect it and even if one has a dead business, He will resurrect it. He’s not telling us to read the Bible for two hours every day. All He wants is to have a personal relationship with us. ormer software engineer Aimee Woodside believes that women can always look stylish and sophisticated regardless of their body shape or size. This has always been her mantra. Unassuming as she is, Aimee’s goal is to exude her best fashionable look regardless of what she wears. This is the story behind Bella Collection, a fashion line that defines her life inspiration- utmost sophistication for plus-size women.

Her very own clothing brand allowed her to mend her engineering skills with her fashion sense. Bella Collection is also a tribute to her daughter Bella, which means “Beautiful” in Italian. After working for Information Technology companies for 10 years, she quit her job and focused on designing clothes. “I lamented the fact that I can’t find the clothing style and quality that I want. That was my dilemma, and I realized, ‘why not try to enter the fashion industry and come up with my own?’ And that started it all,” says Aimee.

Proudly Filipino made Aimee, who holds a degree in Computer Engineering, said her Bella Collection is fully home grown, all made in Las Piñas City. Her collection is apt from petite (small) to plus-size (5XL) women,

She averred that her collection boldly embraces curves by flattering their figures to make them as beautiful and slender. “We employed a revolutionary approach to women’s fashionable wear by offering innovative clothing designed to flatter all female body types. We made our apparel accessible to all women, from the Petite to the Plus sizes, from Slender to Curvy.” Bella Collection offers fashionable pieces for women of all sizes and shapes, but they are very popular in the Plussize market.

Prim Nolido:

The essential traveler By Carlo S. Suerte Felipe

T

he current boom in the real estate industry is challenging the creativity and innovation of developers like Pueblo De Oro Development Corp. (PDO). For company President Prim Nolido, the key is to constantly bring in fresh ideas. A change of scenery, or a new experience can do wonders to the busy mind. This is the reason why Prim loves to travel. Travelling is not just a way to escape the stress brought about by the corporate world. So far, Prim has visited five continents and it’s not because he’s the company’s head honcho. Apparently work follows the president everywhere he goes. And so when Prim travels abroad, work doesn’t stop.

50

“Travel is important in real estate because you’re able to get ideas from other countries. You bring home the knowledge from those experiences,” he explained. For example, Prim shared how communities are developed abroad. In the past, township designs in the Philippines were very similar to Spain. The church is the center and is surrounded by the market, plaza and other commercial areas. “In the newer townships we’re developing right now we see different kinds of master planning,” Prim explained. “In some areas, it’s very similar to the US where the government is at the center and it’s surrounded by businesses. There are also developments like New York City - Central VO L. 5

Park is at the center, and the commercial value of properties around it are very high. It’s somehow applied by subdivision developers - the basketball court, park or club house is at the center of the residential spaces. He also revealed that about 30 percent of the sales of Pueblo De Oro come from overseas Filipino workers. “OFWs tend to acquire properties with a design they are familiar with - it’s either they’ve seen that particular design abroad or maybe they worked or stayed in that particular type of house.”

Around the country and beyond Prim personally oversees and visits all

the developments of PDO in Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Batangas and Pampanga every month. Then, trips done out of the country are usually done with his two daughters. “I make it a point that I travel outside the country two to three times a year during my breaks - usually during the Holy Week, during the semester break of my kids (by the end of October up to first week of November) and during Christmas break. The trip is usually longer around these times. However, if it’s a long weekend or a short holiday, I’d still travel but in Asian countries.” Prim schedules most of his trips during long holidays which is also considered peak season for travelers. Planning

ahead by booking plane tickets and hotel accommodations early is his key to a hasslefree trip. To maximize the time spent for each trip, he would join tour groups and visit the best tourist spots. “Do a partial research of the places you’re going to using any available travel apps,” he explained. “And join tour groups because it somehow maximizes time you spend on each area.” Another travel tip from Prim is to always bring an extra empty luggage. He usually brings one when he travels to make sure he has that extra space for gifts or souvenirs that he’ll bring back home. And since he needs to document the places he visits, he brings a dual-

SIM smartphone where he can use an international data SIM that will keep him connected to his office in Manila.

Travel while you’re still young Prim’s travel advice would be to travel while you’re still young and embrace the culture of each place you visit. Get out of your comfort zone and make the most out of each trip. “Try the local food and drinks and go where the locals go.” “Travel while you’re still in shape,” Prim explains, “when you’re already too old, you might find it tiring and you will not appreciate the experience anymore.” Feast your eyes on your new surroundings by walking around the area.

The A. Venue: Cozy dwelling in a bustling district

akati Avenue has long been regarded as one of Metro Manila’s popular nightlife destinations. Tourists and locals like visiting its bars, clubs and restaurants. But in recent years its popularity has been given a boost due to its proximity to the upmarket Rockwell Center and the cool, hip Poblacion district. It is no surprise therefore that more hotels are being built here to accommodate the growing number of foreign and local visitors who want to fully immerse themselves in this area. But despite the growing competition, The A.Venue Hotel has managed to remain in the lead in a class all its own. For the past ten years, The A. Venue has established a reputation as one of the premier hotels in the area. Unlike other dwellings the 290 guest rooms are spread out in three interconnected tower blocks. The studio rooms are spacious and equipped with microwave ovens, wifi, flat screen TVs and rainfall shower heads. In fact Eden Abella, the hotel’s marketing manager, says “That is the reason why we get a lot of bookings from groups like families and foreign tourists. They feel like they are staying in an upmarket condo in the middle of Makati.” Aside from tourists and locals, the hotel is very popular among business travelers due to its proximity to the Ayala Business Center. To accommodate their

needs, the hotel has two business centers with private meeting rooms. Another simple but thoughtful touch that attracts the business travelers here are the free local calls. While this is available to all the hotel guests, this is very important to foreign business travelers, as it allows them to save money from the huge fees charged by their country’s mobile phone carriers. Once the guests have checked in, they will find that the hotel offers a variety of

leisure activities. There are two gyms, indoor and outdoor pools and kiddie pools for those who want to maintain their fitness routine. For those with children, there is a children’s playground and two children’s pools to keep them happy. For those who prefer to pamper themselves they can check out the Toccare Spa near the pool area. Aside from massages and beauty treatments the spa offers a steam sauna and jacuzzi. Once they are done and they think they need a new outfit to show off their new look, they can just walk over to the nearby Century Mall or if they prefer take a taxi to the Rockwell Mall. If all these physical activities leave the guests hungry, the hotel has three restaurants located on the fifth floor. The Azzuro Restaurant,

Granvia Café, and the pool bar. But if they want something more, there is a wide variety of restaurants just within walking distance from the hotel. Aside from Filipino and various types of Chinese cuisine, they can try out Middle Eastern, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Thai and even Mexican food. Aside from the guest rooms the hotel has seven function rooms that can accommodate any event from twenty to two hundred guests. Whether it is a seminar, wedding or a debut, the hotel’s event team will make sure that everything will go as planned. With its location and guest rooms, you probably think that it would cost a fortune staying here. Not really. The published rates per night range from P9,500 in a studio room to P15,000 for a two-bedroom Suite. This is definitely a good reason to have a The A.Venue staycation.

A haven for beauty treatments and services, Mecca has the latest in world-class machine treatment systems from the US, Europe, and Korea. Offering top-of-the-line beauty treatments for the past 8 years, the unique menu of beauty services was developed by its founder Mars Balajadia and patterned after her favorite spas abroad. “When I travel, I usually go to the spa and try the services and when I like something, I get bits and pieces of the service. To address the problems of the younger generation she sought inputs from her millennial staff. “Most of them said dark underarms and acne. They also said they don’t know where to go to address these problems. Some even think it’s expensive. And so these became the

cornerstone of Mecca. A spa that caters to the young generation without breaking the bank. I want to be able to provide topquality yet inexpensive services.” Growing up, Balajadia knows that skin problems can affect one’s confidence and self-esteem. When she built Mecca, her objective was to help her clients build their confidence. With services like acne treatments, underarm whitening, slimming, even a simple massage she wants everyone to feel at home upon entering Mecca. She didn’t want the clinic to be intimidating. Even her staff are extra attentive. They make sure that every client is given extra special care. “I envision Mecca to be a beauty 56

They get full reflexology and foot spa services while watching a movie. In most spas, Balajadia says you don’t get to enjoy the services so she decided to combine the two things she loves most—massage and watching movies, which gave birth to the spa theater. lifting machine from Italy. Mecca is the only one in the Philippines that offers this treatment. The machine follows a fourstep process that melts body fat, tones the skin, and contours in just 7 days. They also have RevLite for underarm whitening and acne marks, RF Microneedling for stretch marks and acne scars, Hifu, the latest technology for lifting, and the Aqua Peel that eliminates blackheads and whiteheads minus the painful extraction. Since it’s a beauty vacation, they offer massage treatments like Brazilian Hot stone, Indian Mandara, even the traditional Filipino hilot. Mecca Flow, the signature massage, is a combination of all. “I want the massage to be a little bit of Swedish, Shiatsu and other popular massages, the Indian Head Massage, and foot reflexology, which became Mecca Flow. We even use Dagdagay sticks from Baguio to target pressure points. This 90-minute massage is really, really relaxing.” This early, Balajadia is excited with the expansion opportunities. She plans to open another branch in the 2nd quarter of 2019. Hopefully she can have more branches around Metro Manila and, even outside the country. “I know it’s going to be tough because it will entail a lot of work.” So if you want to relax without having to leave the country, why not go to Mecca Aesthetic Clinic and Spa?
