Messina’s recently published book called “THE LUMINOUS PORTRAIT,” is a unique and eloquent guide into her creative process of making photographs. This book is full of Messina's insights and expertise, and she is generous with information about how she approaches each shoot and is able to create consistent "luminous" images. It is so much more than a usual step by step guide, it is also thoughtful and inspirational. The conversational tone of her words feels as intimate as her photographs. Her portraits have an uncanny ability to simultaneously inspire with beauty while invoking a curiosity about the subject, like a masterful painting. Says Messina, “It was only in photographs that I found a peace, a soulful satisfaction where my mind, my heart, and my creative ideas merged and were inexplicably connected in my images.”
Elizabeth Messina: Elisabeth Messina & The Luminous Portrait by Thomas Flynn
W
hen Elizabeth Messina was a shy twelve year old girl, her mother gave a camera as a Christmas present. Without any guidance, and little idea of what she was doing, she began setting up her first photo shoots, putting make up on her friends and posing them in different places. That was the beginning of her love affair with photography. This timid child had begun searching for a visual and artistic voice, and a sense that, before she knew photography could be a an actual career, something in her instinctively knew what she would become. But the road to pursuing her calling wasn’t easy. Coming from a family of more conventionally educated people than creatives, photography didn’t even seem a viable occupational choice to her. Her plan (which was supported and encouraged by her family) was to go to college and eventually law school. She followed that path until her third year in college, when fatefully, she enrolled in an elective photography course. In that class, she something changed in her heart as learned there was a name for what she truly wanted to be, a photographer. So, with little more than unwavering hope, and that one elective photography class under her belt, she took the chance of her life, dropping out of college and applying to the San Francisco Art Institute, breaking down in tears after turning in her application because she thought she’d never be accepted. As she says in her poignant book “A Luminous Portrait”, “I had jumped off a cliff, figuratively speaking, and did not know where I would end up.” Luckily for the art world, she landed on her feet, camera in hand. She was accepted to SFAI’s photography program, and began a journey into her soul’s passion, one that continues to this day. Fast forward several years. Elizabeth is a busy lady, a mother of

three with a demanding career in wedding and editorial photography. She has been named by American Photo magazine as one of the top ten wedding photographer’s in the world, and her images have appeared on Entertainment Tonight, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and The Lifetime Network. Her work has been published in Martha Stewart Weddings, The Knot and Town and Country, among others, and she’s been given editorial assignments from People, OK and Angeleno magazines, and many others. She maintains a fantastically visual and wonderfully poetic blog called kissthegroom.com, a work of art in itself, and she regularly contributes to the Huffington Post. Her celebrity client list includes names like Hillary Duff, Brooke Shields, Tori Spelling, and basketball great Kevin Garnett. And yet, for someone with so much on her plate, Messina’s pictures have a timeless, unhurried quality, as if taken by someone with all day to sit around and capture the perfect moment. With verbal imagery like this it easy to see why writing a book would come so naturally to Elizabeth. Pick up “A Luminous Portrait”, and it’s impossible not to be affected by her infectious enthusiasm for photography. The casual admirer will be taken by the stunning beauty and purity of the pictures that are contained throughout, and as concrete evidence of the author’s intimate knowledge of her craft. The fledgling young
photographer as well as the more experienced photographer will find inspiration in Elizabeth’s personal story, as well as prudent practical advice on a variety of subjects, from choosing the right light and putting a subject at ease, to selecting the right equipment to compliment one’s artistic preferences. Whether you want a beautiful coffee table book or are yearning for knowledge about photography you will be satiated. There is even a chapter dealing with the business side of photography, with sections on how to establish a niche, gain exposure by getting published, and ideas for how to promote your work. While Messina is well versed in all areas of photography, she is particularly obsessed with light, specifically natural light, and her pictures are a testament to it’s enchanting qualities when used correctly. In “A Luminous Portrait”, she explains why natural light is beneficial, which she says “resonates with and envelopes it’s subjects, allowing their natural beauty to emerge”. And while experienced photographers will find it a valuable tool, the book is also full of simple, yet professional suggestions that many amateur photographers can benefit from, from seemingly obvious (though not in reality) advice, like not photographing subjects with light in their eyes— it makes people squint, and it’s not flattering— to tips on minimizing glare for gentler effect. It is clearly an devotion with Messina that goes further
than just photography. “I am always aware of and noticing light, whether or not I have a camera in my hands,” she says. “So I do, whenever possible, guide my subjects towards the beautiful, flattering natural light.” Though Messina is now a seasoned and experienced photographer, one cannot help but notice her seemingly fresh enthusiasm for her craft, that little twelve year old peeking out in every picture. It reveals itself in the way she communicates both in images and words, and you can feel the sense that she feels incredibly fortunate to do what she loves. “The act of creating a photograph is still so satisfying to me,” she says. “There are moments while I am shooting when I feel like something wonderful is happening…I am so involved in the moment of creation...it is pure pleasure.” And though now a recognized expert in her field, her reflections about photography still maintain something wonderfully humble, even child like in their curiosity. •
“I would have loved to have been around when photography was invented,” she says. “It must have seemed like a miracle.” Marveling over your photographs and this book Elizabeth, we’d have to say that it still does. modèleweddings.com | 15

on and Mimi had celebrated their marriage in Korea but knew they'd have another ceremony closer to home. The romantic evenings spent on their balcony overlooking Pelican Hill Resort made it an easy selection for their special day. They imagined a lavishly floral designed ceremony and culturally diverse reception. When Mimi decided that peacocks and chandeliers would welcome the guests to the rotunda, her florist got to work designing seven-foot birds and a breathtaking backdrop. Don and Mimi's family and friends enjoyed the beauty and gasped as the ceremony ended with 100 white doves flying upon a blue sky. The guests were invited to a 5-course meal and enjoyed a live production of models parading colorful gowns from Korea. Don and Mimi participated in the show to an applauding and delighted crowd. With a change of wardrobe, Mimi danced solo for her adoring groom. When the evening came to a close they knew the day had been full with memories and moments satisfying the imaginations of the wedding of which they dreamed.

Our actors, Jon Hall and Sharelle Smith, gave us the expressions and chemistry of the true prince and princess running across the castle's draw bridge as the clock struck midnight. Each scene required a speedy and complete change of hair and makeup. VANESSA MOON AND VALERIE CLINE worked hard to see that we'd meet the setting sun with a full story. My assistants DAVE AND SUSAN BELL ensured that each light was pointed perfectly painting the right mood.

The castle winery was made with nearly one million antique bricks shipped from Europe, wood and iron imported from Italy and combined with over 8,000 tons of local stone. Today, Castello di Amorosa, a popular Napa Valley destination, offers a variety of wine tasting and touring options in a unique Tuscan castle setting. It’s a familyowned winery which produces worldclass wines sold only at the winery direct to the consumer.

"Mike and I met in college at USC. He was a friend's older brother from a fraternity. I had a terrible crush on him as a Freshman, though it wasn't until my Sophomore year that I mustered up the courage to ask him out. Six and a half years later he asked me to marry him. We were married in Rancho Santa Fe (a great place for historic Spanish architecture) with an intimate, but fun group of family and friends. I wanted it to feel like a classy dinner with a bit of a frat party thrown in."

California’s wedding designers and the venues that inspire them are among the best in the world. The California bride has discerning and sophisticated taste and requires a wedding that is fashion forward and able to fuse nature and architecture seamlessly while providing guests with a beautiful, emotional and captivating experience.

The former Cathedral of St. Vibiana, located in downtown Los Angeles, has a very long and interesting history. One of L.A.’s few remaining nineteenthcentury landmarks, St. Vibiana’s was completed in 1876 and the city’s first cathedral was an impressive example of architecture, designed by Ezra F. Kysor. The cathedral’s Italian Baroque façade was inspired by the Los Angeles bishop’s childhood church in Spain. Architect John C. Austin enlarged the structure in 1924 and created a new Main Street façade of Indiana limestone. St. Vibiana’s Cathedral was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1963.
38 | modèleweddings.com
In 1995, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles announced plans to demolish the church to make way for an all-new cathedral complex on the site. The Los Angeles Conservancy intervened and a long fight began to save St. Vibiana’s. Luckily, the Conservancy ultimately prevailed in both lawsuits, despite appeals from the Archdiocese and the City. The Archdiocese ultimately decommissioned and deconsecrated the cathedral, vacated the site, and built the new cathedral a few blocks away on Temple Street. The Conservancy pursued potential buyers for the property and in 1997 commissioned a study of options for its adaptive reuse. In 1999, Vibiana was purchased by Tom Gilmore, a visionary who worked to revitalize downtown L.A.’s historic buildings. St. Vibiana’s rehabilitation began and the incredible building now known simply as Vibiana, is the darling of venues in Los Angeles, hosting some of the most fashion-forward weddings and receptions in the world, in addition to fashion shows, fundraising events and live entertainment.

he floral design was a key element in making this wedding feel both traditional and modern at the same time. Contrast was key when Eddie Zaratsian of tictock Couture Florals designed the bridal bouquet, using roses in light ivory, pink and peach tones, while adding dark, modern callas and adornments of pearls and rhinestones. The bridesmaid bouquets, bursting with rich color were a modern contrast and complement to the bridal bouquet. Cascading white orchids and lush roses placed in modern, glass vases and sitting atop clean, white glossy stands greeted guests at both the ceremony and reception and provided a stunning atmosphere that embodied glamour and modern design.

EASTERN STYLE has been influencing the runway as well as the reception and is evident in the recent collections of prominent designers like CHANEL, PRABAL GURUNG and LOUIS VUITTON. Designers are now CELEBRATING INDIAN CULTURE more than ever before, as well as all of the beautiful colors, patterns and richness that India has to offer. Vibrant colors, flowing fabric and beautiful ancient motifs are showing up, not only on the runway, but down the aisle and at the reception and the design options are endless and exciting!
E
legant opulence is back and will not be just for the traditional Indian bride. We predict that India-inspired design themes will also start showing up in more Western-style weddings and receptions in the coming year. The fusion of Indian opulence with easy, California style creates something truly extraordinary and unique and is evident in this incredible Terranea Resort wedding designed by Nikki Khan of Exquisite Events. Turquoise, gold, orange and bright yellow are hot colors right now and work so well together in this sophisticated and tasteful wedding ceremony and reception. The mandap, a focal point of the ceremony, earns it’s place as the center of attention. Covered in joyful yellow and white flowers, gorgeous embroidered fabric and adorned with a beautiful chandelier, it is a
work of art. The reception at Terranea Resort is the epitome of opulent elegance in gold, pink, orange and peach. The walls draped in sheer fabric add to the warm and inviting atmosphere and create a more intimate feeling in a large ballroom. Modern, rich and lush are all perfect words to describe this over-the-top (in a good way) reception. Terranea, a Mediterranean Resort in Palos Verdes, is an old-world estate on a tranquil and well-maintained 102 acres of land. The luxury resort offers 582 rooms, including a luxurious collection of residential bungalows, casitas and villas. The resort also features The Links at Terranea, an award-winning, 9-hole par 3 golf course, an incredible spa, three ocean-view pools and a collection of eight amazing restaurants, bars, cafes and lounges.

The furniture line was originally inspired by French Provincial design, but is infused with plenty of California chic and effortless beauty. A
s the scratchy old radio played Loretta Lynn on repeat, the set echoed an oversaturated, cloying, over-the-top 1957 scene. The bride is celebrating her perfect day, her perfect husband, her perfect fantasy life. Heavy-handed, blown out hues - you can almost taste the saccharine cherry pie and intentionally cliched props setting the stage for our protagonist to celebrate her dream moment. Oblivious to her surroundings, she poses in exaggerated domesticity while around her time and life has been shattered. It's Mad Max 30 years earlier and she's the last hold out of a forgotten life. She serves and preens, desperate to fulfill the role. Slowly she winds towards emancipation. The fantasy starts to unravel. The idealism fractures, and by the end of our story she casts off the foisted role. Screw him. Screw this. She tears off her chains to the obligations of the past, turns to face the future and realizes it's too late.

Dream Wedding Give Away
Cinderella was right, never stop dreaming. Because someday, your dreams will come true.
Kenna & Zach
L
ove and compassion are just a couple of words I can think of to describe the people behind modèle Weddings Magazine. My husband Zach and I had always talked about having our dream wedding but had accepted that it would never happen. As a Marine Corps family, having a dream wedding wasn't really an option, and Zach was getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan for the 3rd time in April 2012. One night in January 2012, we were presented with a sweet movie montage of some of our most fun pictures. At the end of the movie we were asked to attend our dream wedding, sponsored by modèle Weddings Magazine. Wait... what?! I cried and Zach was speechless. The next month was a whirlwind as we were taken through all the preparations for the wedding and reception. Could this really be happening?! All of the vendors came together and designed the most exquisite, delicate, and glamorous wedding and reception we could have ever asked for. The wedding took place at a church on a hill overlooking the beautiful mountains in San Juan Capistrano, California. The altar was surrounded with vintage bird cages, pink decor, suitcases and garden flowers. At the reception, the room was transformed into a vintage Wonderland. We both gasped when we walked into the room, as these dainty decorations covered the room. Our sweetheart table was breathtaking, and the cake was the most beautiful (and delicious!) cake we have ever tasted. It had these realistic butterflies on it, which are a huge symbolic creature for us. The butterflies symbolize rebirth, and the dainty birds throughout the wedding are a symbol from when my husband was baptized. These amazing people came together to give us the wedding beyond our dreams, and we are forever grateful. Every person that was a part of this wedding and reception knew beauty in its truest form and created a masterpiece. After it was all over, my husband and I were still in awe. We couldn't believe it had actually happened and that these people, some who did not know us at all, cared so much for us and would design something so intimate and dear to our hearts. Cinderella was right, never stop dreaming. Because someday, your dreams will come true.

Tianyi & Dan
"The couples's first date was the culmination of a serendipitous meeting before Dan set out on an around the world trip"
60 | modèleweddings.com
TIANYA AND DAN MET AFTER MONTHS OF COMMUNICATION OVER THE INTERNET, AND A 20 HOUR FLIGHT TO ULAN BATOR, MONGOLIA. They chose to make the date last for three weeks from Mongolia through Tibet. It went so well they set up an encore in Tahiti before traveling to Taiwan to celebrate Tianyi's mom's birthday. From the beginning they knew there was something special about their connection. Tianyi and Dan wanted their wedding to be an intimate gathering of friends in a setting that felt like a picnic in the park. Cravens Estate in Pasadena was selected as the venue since it allowed for both the ceremony and reception on site.
T
ianyi, being the owner of TISELLE- a letterpress and design company, took advantage of her artistic talents to create an invitation that had a woodsy and whimsical feel complete with a rabbit and fox as the couple's alter egos. The rest of the wedding was full of personalized touches coming from collaborating with the couple's excellent group of friends and vendors. A tree house was built as a backdrop for the ceremony. It including elements from Tianyi and Dan's worldwide courtship. An entrance song was chosen for Dan. The officiant was one of the groomsmen, and there was a special dance performance headlined by the groom. We had a ton of fun and hopefully everyone else did as well!

iko and I met in 2003, in high school, and we have been together ever since. Kiko went away to college while I finished my last year in high school. We had a distant relationship for that year, which was hard, but fate still kept us together. I joined the Marine Corps after high school while she finished college, we have stuck together through so much and love every minute of it. We had a beautiful wedding in Westlake Village, California and celebrated our honeymoon in the Caribbean on the island of Saint Lucia. We're currently living in San Clemente. We have two dogs that we love dearly and couldn't be happier!

SPOTLIGHT
Mindfulness and Marriage by Rachel Coates, LCSW Child and Family Therapist
A
s the big day approaches you are surely running the gamete of emotions; joy, excitement, anxiety, trepidations… This is to be expected. Embrace each emotion. Acknowledge it and make note of the cause. As your excitement and anticipation builds keep in mind that the day of your wedding with all the wonders it holds is one day in your life-time commitment with your partner. From this moment forward you and your partner will navigate a life time journey together. Like a cruise around the world; some days will be calm and peaceful, feeling as through you are in a perpetual state of bliss. Others days will bring rough seas, and making it through those days will take real team work, commitment and mutual respect. "Marriage as with life has ups and downs; the yin and yang. For where there is joy, there must also be some sorrow. Peace lies in the middle." "Mindfulness is a way to navigate to that middle. Accepting and embracing what is. Mindfulness of our actions, our words and our thoughts. It is only when we are truly aware (mindful) can give 100% of ourselves, not just to our partner but to everything; our work, family- to OUR life." Mindfulness encompasses so many things but here are a few simple steps to become more mindful:
1.
Make note of a thought. So many times we are thinking of a thousand different things while our body is doing something completely different. For instance we may be driving to work thinking about what we need to get at the store later, then menu choices the caterer gave, then the price of the cake, then, how your partner seems completely disinterested in any of these details and is leaving it all up to you by saying, “Whatever you want honey.” Somehow you arrive at work not even remembering how you got there. Our thoughts evoke feelings. You can be thinking about the cake and feel hungry and excited, but then move into the thought of the disinterest of your partner and become angry. Try to stay with one thought at a time. Be mindful of how that thought is making you feel. It is that feeling that will help you navigate your path. For instance if you recognize that when you think about making food decisions you become angry and can identify why, you are now able to approach your partner with this information. You may say something like, “Honey, I appreciate how flexible you are with letting me pick what I want and at the same time I want you to be involved and have a say too, so I feel like we are partners in this.”
2.
Be mindful of your actions. Such as with the example above about driving the car, often times we are moving through life not really in the moment or attending to what we are doing. Try to
keep your mind focused on the task at hand. When your mind wonders, just make note of it mentally and then bring yourself back to what you were doing. Driving is a great example of this. There would be far less accidents if everyone of mindful while they were driving.
3.
Be mindful of others. How many times has someone been talking with you and you are half listening? Your partner is talking about a stressful day and although you are interested you are also thinking about all of the chores you need to get done before the end of the day. Try to clear your mind like an eraser on the chalk board, make eye contact and tune into what is being said, your partner’s tone of voice and non-verbal body language. Ask clarifying questions to show your partner you are listening, interested and wanting to understand everything that is being communicated.
open…If we ignore or squash our feelings we are creating a weak foundation. When you hit those rough seas that weak foundation may not be able to support you and your marriage. It is important to not just acknowledge these feelings, but share them with your partner no matter how hard. It is when you can be truly vulnerable and honest with each other that you will grow closer together and in turn strengthen your marriage. •
LISA FITTS PHOTOGRAPHY
4.
Be mindful of your feelings. Similar to making note of your thoughts, there are times when we are overwhelmed with a particular feeling and maybe can’t explain why. Embrace this feeling even if is uncomfortable. It is often times of discomfort that brings about change. Change is often seen as scary and unwanted but in reality usually something that is positive. Think back on your life when you encountered major changeswhat were the outcomes? Like the old saying goes; when one door closes two more doors

Love Story:
J
Kelsey & John
ohn and Kelsey both grew up in the Santa Ynez Valley and went to the same high school. Despite having mutual friends, their paths rarely crossed. It wasn't until a chance encounter in the summer of 2007 that set their fate. John pursued Kelsey for quite a while and after some convincing from her girlfriends she finally gave in. From that point on they were inseparable. Their shared passion for the outdoors led them on their first vacation together in beautiful Big Sur. Over the next four years, John and Kelsey went on many adventures together. Shortly after John graduated from UCSB, he swept Kelsey away to the place their romance had blossomed years earlier. On the side of a mountain beneath ancient redwoods, John proposed. When they started to plan their wedding day, John and Kelsey stressed the importance of simplicity and the desire to capture nature's beauty. In their minds Firestone Vineyard was the perfect fit and October was the perfect time of year. Their ceremony took place under a huge live oak tree (their favorite), surrounded by 30+ year old chardonnay vines whose leaves had just started to turn beautiful colors of red and orange. In keeping with a natural theme, the reception was a collective masterpiece of both their families and designed to showcase their love for the outdoors and nature. Kelsey's aunts prepared every last boutonniere, bouquet, and centerpiece for the wedding day with flowers from the local farmers market and white oak leaves harvested from local trees. Each table was accented with mason jar candles filled with acorns while recycled wine bottle glasses from wine punts served as the water glasses and a gift to their guests.
In keeping with a natural theme, the reception was a collective masterpiece of both their families and designed to showcase their love for the outdoors and nature.

LIFE STYLE
WHAT DOES COCKTAIL ATTIRE REALLY MEAN? The invitation arrives and the date is close. Your plus one asks, "What does cocktail attire mean?" You hesitate a moment and then realize that you don't have a definitive answer except to say “pick out the best outfit for the occasion”. Generally, that's not okay as dress codes are codes, i, e, the secret-yet-not formula of what is expected of you and your guest to be wearing.
Here's your reply to your guest for what to wear: by CBS Lifestylist - CBSLifestylist.com Cocktail attire REALLY means ‘GET DRESSED UP’. It means NO DENIM (in any configuration), NO TOMMY BAHAMA button downs paired with khakis and NO FLIP-FLOPS or other sandals. Generally speaking, in the great state of California, if you've been invited to a wedding you can assume that the couple to be married, and hosting the event, has spent anywhere from $45-$350 per guest. That means $90-$700 per couple aka, you and your date! What you wear translates into respecting the fact that this soon-to-be newlywed couple has paid a respectable amount of money for you to join in the celebration.
Let me be more specific: WOMEN: A good rule of thumb- ANYTHING THAT HAS A SHEEN OR SHINE WORKS. Keep this in mind. A dress and high heels is the most obvious choice. However, slacks or suits are lovely, too. Flat shoes for women are quite appropriate if they are clean, new and embellished. STAY AWAY FROM: raffia heels, clogs, wood stacked heels or canvas shoes. Wedge heeled shoes need to be patent leather, high quality variations of leather, or satin. FABRICS TO LOOK OUT FOR ARE: wool, crepe, satin, rayon, acetate and organza. All these fabrics can be worn year-round and convey "evening". FABRICS TO AVOID: constitute denim, chambray, and any cotton including jersey. If you notice- denim, raffia, wood, canvas and cotton are all dull or muted and don't exude a formal look –they are not shiny fabrics (back to my rule of thumb).
MEN: A good rule of thumb is to think three pieces: PANTS, SHIRT, JACKET. The most obvious choice is a SUIT AND TIE, any color. Linen and seersucker are reserved for spring and summer. Trousers and a sports coat work as well. Can you leave out a tie with his suit or sports coat? You can, but only very carefully. This means everything else has to look tailored and smart. Can you substitute a vest for a jacket or coat? Yes, again, very carefully. You will need to wear a tie and your vest needs to fit properly--not too big or too snug. Shoes must be dress-shoe quality and clean. FABRICS TO AVOID: denim and any form of cotton (especially as it relates to slacks). While we're on the subject, and you're confidently explaining to your spouse or partner, 'what does black tie or formal REALLY mean?' The explanation is, 'It means get really dressed up'. For women it's less obvious. It used to allow for long dresses only, but contemporary thought is short or long dresses, but no slacks or suits unless it's a women’s tuxedo. For men it's simple: tuxedo- any style, any era. Just needs to fit properly. So now you're off to the nuptial feast and you're properly dressed. You're ready to show your appreciation for your generous hosts and respect of the occasion. Cheers! By the way, when the invitation does not specify a particular dress code you can assume its cocktail attire unless otherwise stated. •

SPOTLIGHT Debbie Geller of Geller Events created a gorgeous wedding at a private estate in Southern California this past year. We caught up with her a few weeks ago. Here’s what she had to say:
B
ringing this wedding to life was one of the most exciting projects I have had the chance to execute in twenty years of event production. Having known the bride and her family for over fifteen years, and having experienced their style and sensibilities, I was certain there wasn’t a facility in the area that offered exactly what they were looking for. We decided to build their dream on a vacant lot near the bride’s parents’ home. Starting from scratch represented challenges as well as opportunities. I turned to Edgar Zamora at Revelry Event Designers to assist with the structure and to create a barn style setting in a tent. In the 60‘x 100’ tent by Classic Party Rentals, a sub floor was built to level out the empty lot. A truss structure with varying ceiling heights was built and covered in reclaimed wood. Sourcing the reclaimed wood was a huge project in and of itself. Revelry Event Designers called all over the city and finally found a place where they could buy enough reclaimed wood from various old buildings across Los Angeles to cover the entire truss. They then had to treat the wood to make sure guests would not encounter splinters or stains if it was touched. In order to create intimacy and warmth within the structure, we designed a dance floor area with a peaked ceiling using fabric and reclaimed wood beams. A drop-ceiling arbor over the dining area was covered with foliage by The Hidden Garden, and was accented with wooden lanterns. Hand-painted hardwood floors helped set the stage of permanence for this temporary structure, and barn-style doors were the perfect entrance. The biggest challenge of all was building the main doors to the tent to look like an actual barn door. The doors had to be beautiful and functional, and Revelry built it with rivets to look just like a barn door! Using a combination of rectangular exposed wood tables and round tables with linens, we created an eclectic seating pattern. A variety of chair styles helped to continue this look. The centerpieces executed by The Velvet Garden were different on every table. A combination of wildflowers combined with formal touches completed the look of rustic elegance. Subtle lighting design from Images by Lighting gave the illusion that all of the lighting came from our hanging lanterns and candles, although most of it didn’t. When the tent was filled with guests dining and dancing, the joy of the occasion was the last layer on our multi-faceted event. The setting was understated enough to make that joy the primary focus of the evening, and the marriage of bride and groom the most important detail. •

"My favorite moment creating this event was when the inspector from Building and Safety came to inspect the tent, and asked us where it was…while standing in it."

Southern Belle's Beauty Bible
SPOTLIGHT
by Page Berse - About Face Make Up Artistry
HONEY, HUSH! As a Southern Belle, I cannot harp on the subject of perfect hair enough, so listen closely. The phrases “Crowning Glory,” and “Head and Shoulders Above the Rest,” would leave one to believe amazing hair is next to Godliness. Deep in the heart of Dixie you have a duty and an obligation to have the most perfect hair regardless of the natural disaster. Heaven knows the camera crews come around and catch some of the worst hair on the planet after the tornadoes, hurricanes, and occasional fire. Don’t defame the local trailer park with your listless locks! Speaking of natural disasters, flicking your bic during freebird while you tease and spray will definitely give new meaning to fried, dyed, and laid to the side.
THE HIGHER THE HAIR THE CLOSER TO GOD

“You cant make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.” Translate: Don’t expect silky shiny hair you can see your reflection in if you've over processed, undernourished, and flat ironed that hair till its crispier than the bacon at the Waffle House. Couple that with a side of scattered, smothered and covered which describes your color after a round of DIY home highlights. THERE ARE TRAINED PROFESSIONALS WHO CAN HELP! If your friends really cared they would have a “hair intervention” and get you on the right path again. Never underestimate the powers of a trained professional stylist. Who else knows all the gory details of your life and still strives harder than ever to ensure you are drop dead fabulous no matter what?
I
f there were a holy trinity in the hair world it would be the Cut, the Color, and the Style. You owe it to yourself and others around you to maintain a fabulous cut. One would hope that just a select few will know you were Brazilian waxed and "Vagazzled". Turning heads in church with an amazing hairstyle every Sunday is a bigger commitment. It’s a lot less
likely to tarnish the family name and can keep you in the Junior League. Getting your hair professionally colored should be a state law, with 5 inch black root offenders fined accordingly—some simply must do hard time for their haphazard color jobs. Semi permanent color is amazing for blending grey, toning down brassy blondes or adding rich tones of gold or red, with amazing shine. I recommend Shades EQ from Redken for rich glossy color. Sunkist hi-lites look best with color dimension. Use at least 3 shades in combination with your highlights to achieve natural looking color. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!! That home hi lite can go terribly wrong, and you can go from fabulous brunette to white trash brassy blonde in only 45 minutes The cost of color correction and the damage to your hair is not worth the glory of being “Beautician for the Day”. You have to use the right products to keep your hair healthy, happy, and full of life. I love Halo shampoo and conditioner, for silky smooth hair without being weighed down. For coarser, curly hair, I LOVE the Fekkai olive oil shine series,
which tames that frizz and perfects your curl pattern for bouncy tresses. The summer beach waves from Fekkai is perfect for perking up that lifeless summer hair. Styling products make a huge difference in your finished look. I love styling products from Rusk. Blo Foam is a great lightweight mousse that adds body and locks in shine. W8TLESS extra hold is an amazing working spray that gives you all the bounce without the sticky build up. Perfect for setting the loose romantic beach waves, and keeps the breeze from picking you up and sailing you down wind like those sticky sprays. For styles that have to stay put Just Sexy extra firm hold from Rusk is a Southern Belles Pièce de résistance. You do not have to grow your hair longer than Crystal Gail to achieve a wedding hairstyle. If you don’t have enough hair you just add it. To quote Dolly Pardon “if you paid for it -its yours.” New clip in extensions add great volume to any style, and are so easy to use. I love “The hair shop” in LA. They can match up the perfect color, and the hair holds a curl and looks amazing. It all just goes to show you that if the good Lord is willing, everyday can be a good hair day. •

“A Kiss from an Elephant”
"Specializing in South Asian wedding photography I decided to put together one of the first photo shoots in San Diego that would capture the beauty and rich colors of an Indian wedding." by Braja Mandala
P
hotographing a South Asian elephant was an experience I will soon not forget. I not only photographed with one elephant but three elephants. At first I was a little intimidated to be around these gentle giants. But, there was a sense of calm surrounding them, that the experience brought peace to my heart. Their trainer/s were standing close by and he told me that I should get acquainted with the elephants before starting to photograph them. I hesitantly stuck out my hands to greet them and all of a sudden we felt this huge gust of air coming from the elephant's trunk. I guess you can call it an elephant’s kiss. I jumped back a few steps and looked at the trainer with a startled look on my face. With a few laughs the trainer said, "they are just playing with you, don't be afraid." I then understood that they were being friendly and welcoming me to photograph with them. I noticed that each elephant was unique in personality, one acted like the mother, while the other two were playful and young at heart. I spent the rest of the day photographing with the elephants and by the end of the day I completely fell in love with them. I made new friends that day and always greet them with a warm, hello and a kiss when I see them at one of my Indian weddings. •

Allison & Adam
San Francisco is a special place to fall in love.
A
s natives of Kentucky and Utah we have always been proud to call San Francisco and the Bay area our home. When we got engaged there was no question that we wanted to share our special city and the California wine country with all of our friends and family. As we began our venue search we quickly started narrowing down our options to the local wine country. The venues provide a comfortable and laid back atmosphere but with a touch of sophistication. More than anything we wanted to set up an atmosphere that was comfortable, beautiful and allowed our friends and family a fun vacation and venue to get to know each other. The little town of Healdsburg provided a central spot with great hotels, restaurants and access to the Sonoma wine country. We chose Trentadue Winery as our venue because I could instantly envision dining under the grape vine trellis on their property. A 100 yard long trellis was a great spot to line up dramatic queens tables, hang candles at varying lengths and sparkle with twinkle lights. I was hoping it would provide our guests with an experience they wouldn't get anywhere else. Our region is known for delicious fresh food, and as a couple we spend a lot of time eating out so it was important to us to chose a menu that added to the local experience and region. We dined on San Francisco Cioppino, Local Sonoma Duck, and Wine Ice Pops as a palate cleanser. My favorite flower has always been peonies so I felt extremely lucky to be getting married in the middle of the peony season. I love the hundreds of petals and beautiful colors that they come in. To fit with the winding grape vines that grow in every direction, I wanted the flowers to come in different sizes and containers to fit with the natural beauty of the area. Our ceremony had beautiful light pink peonies that contrasted beautifully with the gray bridesmaid dresses. But, when you got to the reception the peonies were a vibrant pink to add a little more festive atmosphere. The flowers were a dream come true! To bring a little bit of my roots to California, the night would not have been complete without a Kentucky Bourbon bar! My mom brought an assortment of bourbons packed tightly in her suitcase.
The tasting was a hit. I hope everyone learned to appreciate a good Kentucky bourbon! 108 | modèleweddings.com

Krysta & Austen
"We “officially” met the first day of our senior year in an Economics class, and have been inseparable ever since." 112 | modèleweddings.com
"AUSTEN AND I ARE HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS. WE WENT TO SCHOOL IN CORONADO, A SMALL ISLAND ACROSS THE BAY FROM SAN DIEGO." Although we had both been there since freshman year, we “officially” met the first day of our senior year in an Economics class, and have been inseparable ever since. One of our first dates was to CHS Homecoming. It’s a Coronado tradition that the guys devise unique ways of asking the girls to Homecoming, so Austen surprised me by putting sparkling new collars on my two Yorkie puppies. He suggested we take the dogs for a walk, and I immediately noticed the bling-y collars. One puppy had an engraved dog tag that read “Will you go to...” and the other puppies tag said “Homecoming with me?” He got an A+ on that assignment!
After high school, we were bi-coastal: Austen attended MIT in Boston and I went to LMU in Los Angeles. Although the four years of long distance between us was tough, we made the best of it and grew even closer. We would turn our computers on each night and study “virtually” together. I went out to Boston for Austen’s graduation. It was so exciting! Little did I realize there was more to come. The day after we flew back to Coronado, Austen and I took his black Lab, Stormie, for a walk to our favorite park, which has beautiful views of downtown San Diego. Over our 5 years of dating we had spent many romantic twilights at this park and it is a special place to both of us. We were both admiring the view when something on Stormie caught my attention. I called her to me to take a closer look; around her neck was a cute new collar and two red, heart-shaped dog tags that read “Will You” and “Marry Me?” As I looked at the collar, Austen got down on one knee and presented me with the most gorgeous engagement ring I have ever seen and asked me to marry him.. and of course I said YES!
