AVOIDING

“Hidden”Costs

inWine Country

weddingsBy Kerry Lee Dickey

H

aving a wine country wedding is the ultimate in sophisticated rustic elegance. There is nothing like it. Knowing in advance some of the ”small print” can help you plan a more accurate budget and ensure your wine country wedding is enjoyed and maximized to the fullest extent possible.

• Most wineries require that the florist, lighting designer (and in some cases rental company) “strike” (or break down/clean up) the actual night of the event. This can result in larger overtime and labor fees which are passed along to the client from the caterer, lighting designer or florist.

events can generally not start until around 5pm or so) and this may cause a time crunch for your set up suppliers (caterer, rental company, florist, lighting designer) , causing them to have to hire extra staff to get an especially elaborate set up done in a shorter amount of time. The extra labor will be passed on to you.

The average rental cost for a single event winery venue is $6,500. But don’t think that that’s it for the bill from the winery and once you sign their contract, pay your deposit, provide proof of liability insurance that you’re done. Below are some of the most commonly overlooked items on many winery’s contracts for events.

• Think Mom and Aunt Bettie can do the decorating to save yourself money? More and more wineries (and top-notch event venues) are requiring Proof of Liability and Workman’s Comp insurance from those who decorate, which means you will save money by hiring a professional florist/lighting designer/decorator in the first place. Additionally, these professionals have their own equipment (ladders, extension cords, etc) already.

• Some wineries require that you hire their valet for your event. Cost will be dependent on how many guests you anticipate.

• There are three levels of liability insurance: $500,000, 1 million and 2 million that should be considered depending on the size of your event. Contact wedsave.com for more details.

18 modeleweddings.com

• Since a winery’s job is to sell wine first and foremost, events often may not be set up until a certain time (since

• Most wineries will require you to hire an “on site” manager (from their staff) to ensure the venue is looked after in case of emergency and also to ensure the venue’s policies are upheld. The venue manager is not the same as a professional event coordinator and it is not their job to do any labor such as set up, etc. But you as the Client will pay for them.

• One winery in particular insists that you hire their pre-approved and licensed child-care provider if anyone – and I mean anyone – under the age of 12 is coming to the wedding. • Some wineries require that your guests may not park on site; you are required to hire shuttles to bring guests to your wedding and reception. • Check to see if there is a service charge and tax added on to your site fee or the bottles of wine purchased for your event. • Further, be aware that you will be charged for bottles of wine that are iced down – not even necessarily opened but iced down. This is standard procedure as the winery

cannot re-sell those bottles once iced down. The great news is that hiring a Full Service Caterer will ensure that they will estimate as closely as possible the amount of wine you will be using, thus keeping unnecessary charges to a minimum. • Be very clear on your winery event contract what time your guests may start arriving. One winery insists that guests may not even arrive until a certain time and if they arrive before then, they will charge you an additional $500/hour. Do not, however, put a “fake” ceremony start time on your invitations to try and lure your guests there in an attempt to start your ceremony in order to accommodate the winery’s contract. This is in very poor taste etiquette-wise. It also ends up costing you more in the long run as the rest of your vendors will be off, the

stage not set when first guest arrives (not acceptable), etc. A good professional wedding planner can work with you to give you super easy ways to accommodate the contract with the winery as well as honor your guests, etiquette, other vendor’s contracts, event timeline as well as an accurate wedding invitation. • Most venues in general (not just wineries) now require the Client to hire a Professional Event Coordinator. While an added expense, this service is invaluable and most coordinators offer an array of services so you do not have to hire a Full Service Wedding Planner. Most offer “day of ” packages, which is the very minimum service your winery will require. Your Professional Wedding Coordinator or Planner is , as one groom said, “wedding insurance” and a reputable one is priceless.

AMERICAN LUXURY LIMOUSINE

Y

our wedding and its celebration create unique, never-to-beforgotten moments in the lives of your loved ones and friends. From the moment a marriage proposal is accepted, through all the planning stages to the shower and the rehearsal dinner, the bachelor and bachelorette parties and finally, the vows, the exchange of rings and the first blissful married kiss, each event, including transportation, must be planned in advance. Scott and Edie of American Luxury Limousine pride themselves in making sure all of your transportation needs are met by providing custom fit vehicles and excellent customer services. One of the most popular events planned for bachelor, bachelorette, or gender-inclusive parties are chauffeured wine country tours. These tours create dedicated special activities outside the scope of ordinary wedding parties and, at the same time, provide your family and guests an ideal introduction to the mountain, land and seascapes of Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles Counties. From the Santa Ynez Valley —so memorably portrayed in the movie Sideways— down the Ventura County Wine Trail, through the Simi Valley to the ocean-side hills of Malibu, expect your desires to be accounted for at every turn. You can choose the number of stops you’d like, the types of wines you’d prefer to sample among the area’s four distinct growing regions —where, for example, pinot noir and chardonnays are rated extraordinary— and then outline your budgetary requirements. American Luxury Limousine will happily

32 modeleweddings.com

share both its vintage expertise and years of local experience, custom tailoring a tour that best suits your wishes. Fancy a closer look at Santa Ynez wine country? The Santa Ynez Valley is nestled in among Southern California’s Coastal Mountains just 35 miles from the beaches of Santa Barbara, and home to more than 75 wineries and tasting rooms. Dropping down over the San Marcos Pass, vineyards of magnificence sweep and regularity lie interspersed with breathtaking vistas—hilly pastures studded with ancient oaks, roadways picked out by brilliant orange poppies and other California wild flowers. Whatever the season, a leisurely drive through the Santa Ynez Valley will provide an experience to toast with any one of the region’s award winning wines. But more than wines await you; there are quaint towns as well, streets lined with charming shops and boutiques, fine restaurants and galleries. Your visit might well coincide with a local festival or a wine-maker’s dinner, a formal concert or a gallery opening. Such events are public and your booking to attend them can be guaranteed in advance. What wines to sample in the Santa Ynez Valley? Pinot Noir and Chardonnay have been mentioned, but the Syrahs are extraordinary as well, the Zinfandel, Malbec, Bordeaux Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Gris, the Rhone varietals and the Merlot…

W

here to begin? These wines are handcrafted and you can expect to supplement your tasting with a delicious lunch at a local café, or arrange for a gourmet picnic spread at one of the many sheltered spots the local wineries provide. Malibu, with its cooler, maritime climate is also perfect for wine grapes, and the industry there is burgeoning with vintages both distinctive and delicious. Malibu wineries are conveniently located near major highways and are designed to provide both casual and musical leisure time experiences. The newest addition to the Malibu tasting scene is located at the renowned Malibu Golf Club and features the specialty portfolio of Malibu Family Wines. Malibu Family’s Beth Neal will happily arrange a day of golf or spa visits for your bachelors or bachelorettes, preceding any tastings or live music on your schedule. This venue is stunningly beautiful, with ocean views in one direction and the majestic Santa Monica Mountains rising up and away from the incoming lines of surf. Many Malibu tasting venues stay open late, specifically to accommodate private tasting parties, and the surf, sand and soaring mountain slopes make these archetypical Southern California experiences. Neither you nor your guests will forget them. Not to be overlooked, the Ventura County Wine Trail formed a few short years ago by local wine makers, and now featuring a total of fifteen wineries, the Trail connects regions of Santa Barbara with those of Los Angeles along the scenic highways and byways of Ventura County. The destinations here range from an antique establishment on a working, 2,000 acre cattle ranch to state-of-the-art facilities with all the modern amenities. At the Cantara Winery in Camarillo, step by step, visitors can witness the wine production processes first hand. Guided tours are offered here, as well as at other establishments, and are often delivered by the owners or wine-makers themselves. As an interested visitor you’ll be invited to immerse yourself in the arts and sciences of wine-making, as well as its delectable tastes. Be assured, neither you nor a guests will want to be relegated to the designated driving role on such trips. Choosing the right limousine service becomes all the more important then; likewise keeping your family and friends together in mobile and comfortable circumstances. The fun should begin the moment you’re picked up and continue until the day and hour you designate. After all it’s your wedding, your celebration, and one of a kind. Scott and Edie of American Luxury Limousine have provided eight sensible questions to ask any transportation company. ◉ - Scott Ruge

Jamie’s passion as a writer led him to LA and Elizabeth’s love for Jamie side tracked her from moving to France after college. Fast forward seven years to a meeting of hearts and minds and we arrive at Rancho Dos Pueblos. Their ceremony took place under 200 year old sycamore trees that seemingly grow together, highlighted by the poignant reading of Captain Corellis Mandolin. Flowers were chosen thoughtfully - lavender representing France, the thistle, an ode to the bride’s Scottish heritage, acorn tops from childhood, and cotton hand-picked in North Carolina by the bride’s mother. Elizabeth, a clothing designer, enjoyed creating a lot of the details that helped make the day unique. Hand dyed lace table runners, photo booth back drop, tags for the honey favors, and scrolls that acted as escort cards with a unique quote for each guest. All of these visions were enhanced by the Event Designer and Ranch Manager, Tricia Fountaine. Her unbridled creativity took Elizabeth and Jamie’s imagination to the moon and back transforming the ranch into a world where it seemed as if all of these magical touches were there all along. Tricia designed the floral arrangements and created a beautiful cotton wreath that hung in the barn. Jamie and Elizabeth often express that it was as if the stars aligned on this special day. From the very beginning of the planning process things fell easily into place and lasting relationships were made with all the people they were lucky to work with

Ten Ways To Keep The When the excitement Of the Wedding Day is Over by Rachel Coates, LCSW Maintains a private practice in Ventura County and specializes in working with children, families and couples. She has been working in the field for over 15 years.

The answer is ‘yes, of course.’ A man and a woman must re-engage with ordinary work routines as a married couple, and that will mean less time focused on their relationship, more time responding to the hurried, discordant demands of everyday life. So yes, of course: a letdown.

On occasion, recreate your first date. Wear the same clothes; go to the same restaurant; watch the same movie—and then, with just a pinch of role-playing, discuss the width and breadth of change in the times since.

SOUTHERN BELLES Beauty Bible By Page Berse

Listen up sugar, It’s The Southern Belle with a few helpful hints and a beauty standard or two. What, you may ask yourself, qualifies this woman to dispense advice? How about six generations in the American South, where perfect hair and makeup are de rigueur through intense humidity, tornadoes and the odd day of Civil War Reenactment. I’ve been in the business since I was able to hold a teasing comb and a can of hairspray. Can there be a more perfect union? I am sincerely dedicated to beauty as an art form, and striving daily to get the current mob of beauty truants back in class. You know those truants, don’t you, the ones who text from Walmart? If fashion Don’ts were criminal acts, life sentences would steer a trolley down aisle 10. Jeepers Creepers!

About Face Make Up Artistry { aboutfacemakeup.vpweb.com } 805-729-5854

If eyes be windows on the soul, don't let yours advertise The Little Shop of Horrors. Woolly Worm eyebrows and spider lashes are the first among Don’ts; they are absolutely unacceptable. Get your eyebrows done professionally. The right arch, shape, and color are essential for framing your eyes and prompting a finer make-up application. Tip: the gals at the Benefit Brow Bar in Santa Barbara personally keep me from being mistaken for the Wolfman — Wolfwoman, that is— and are kind enough to place courtesy calls before a full Moon. I love the brow kit from Benefit {benefitcosmetics.com}; it contains two shades for brows and a great highlighter for the brow bone as well. Mascara has made many victims out of innocent beauty. Pick a formula designed for your lashes and stop the applications at two coats. Please, y’all. A case of the vapors and you’ll progress from Tammy Faye Baker to Alice Cooper faster than Dale Earnhardt’s last lap at

Talledega. Don’t give the folk more to talk about after church! Technology has come a long way in mascara. I love the “lash curling” type from Trish McEvoy {trishmcevoy.com}. It produces shiny lashes, great length and never rubs off. It literally wraps around lashes, but it will release in little tubes with a simple splash of warm water. Perfection. And when you visit the Trish counter, ask the on-site artist to give you a quick makeup lesson. If you’re in Santa Barbara, that artist is Carolyn. I also love the lash conditioners on the market,You’ll want the drug free sort sold in most good stores. I use Nuelash { neulash. com } and LOVE the result. Eyelash batting is a competitive sport where I come from and I EXPECT TO WIN! False eyelashes are a viable option, yes, but practice installing them well before the big day. First measure the false lash to see if it needs trimming and only trim with sharp scissors. Next place a bead of glue on the base and let it set a minute. Then bend the lash a little and place it as close to the lashline as possible, starting from the inner corner. You want false lashes aligned on the natural lash line. But, Ladies, go easy on the glue. You don't want your eyes stuck shut and a seeing eye dog guiding you down the aisle. Brides-to-be, I only recommend full, natural looking lashes, the kind you can fill in and define. The three-inch, batwing fans were designed specifically for the Drive Thru Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, somewhere they match up with Elvis’s mutton chop sideburns. Don't embarrass your mother. Wear the batwings and her revenge will be a forced viewing of your bridal portrait every Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter Sunday for thirty years, give or take.

They met in Japan as they both were pursuing their MBAs. Shortly after they started dating, Joe left Japan to start his career in Taiwan. 3 1/2 years in a long distance relationship brought them tremendously close as they got to know each other without the luxury of seeing each other every day. After attending Shirley's friend's wedding together in the states, Joe decided this would be the last goodbye they would share. On his flight back to Taiwan (and hers to Japan) he knew she was "the one."

We got engaged in Las Vegas, four years to the weekend where we had kissed for the first time. Scott had been planning the weekend for months and even arranged for both our families to be there to celebrate with us. A year and a half later, we tied the knot on the roof of The London Hotel West Hollywood with 150 of our closest friends and family in a traditional Jewish ceremony. Since the majority of guests were in from out of town (Scott’s from New York and I’m from San Francisco) and Scott is in the entertainment business, we wanted to have an iconic “LA” wedding. Our venue reflected that with an elegant but modern Hollywood feel, just steps away from the Sunset Strip. The ceremony was held under a tent on the roof, set on a backdrop of panoramic views of the city. The celebration followed on the roof with cocktails and food stations from the culinary team of Gordon Ramsey. Guests were then brought down to the ballroom where we danced the night away. In lieu of a traditional wedding cake, we offered a dessert table with a variety of sweets, including our favorite ice cream sandwiches from the famous Diddy Reese. Throughout it all, we think the night really reflected who we are. We wouldn’t have changed a thing! It was perfect!

I met Greg seven years ago during a trip to Las Vegas. I was there for my best friend's 22nd birthday; he was there for his younger sister's dance recital. I was entering my junior year at San Diego State and he was entering his senior year at Stanford. We met at a nightclub in Caesar's Palace and spent the evening dancing, sharing cocktails, stories and simply having a good time. We exchanged numbers that night but, aside from one random phone conversation a few months later, I thought I'd never see or talk to him again. A year later, I was sitting on a bench outside of a nightclub in San Diego and a guy, (which turned out to be Greg) sat next to me. We were shocked and amazed at randomly bumping into each other! He explained that he moved to San Diego because he just got a job playing for the Chargers. As the years passed, we ended up hanging out in similar social circles and would flirt every now and again. Greg made it clear he wanted something more, but I made it clear that he was stuck in the friend zone. In 2007, our friendship had grown to hanging out with each other a couple of times a week, but it remained platonic. By the end of the year, it had turned to something more. We didn't officially start dating until he moved to Miami because he got a job playing for the Dolphins, and I moved to South Carolina for an employment opportunity. We dated long-distance for 15 months before moving in together and he proposed to me in May 2010. Although I was a little stubborn at first, my heart's been smiling ever since I opened it up to him and our wedding day was truly magical.

It was an immense pleasure helping Danielle and Erik plan their wedding. They were high school sweethearts who had spent the last 4 years in different states while Danielle went to college. From the very beginning Danielle knew her color palate and knew that she wanted chandeliers everywhere! We decided on a design inspired by the sweetness and elegance of Marie Antoinette using a palate of ice blue, soft blush, peach, silver and gold. The ceremony took place at the church the bride grew up in, Santa Ynez Valley Presbyterian. From there, guests were shuttled to the reception. Having grown up in the area, they decided to have their reception at Tres Hermanas Winery. Because they loved the outdoor setting, cocktail hour was held outside under the huge oak tree. We hung crystal chandeliers from the tree and brought in amazing white button tufted furniture to glam up the space. With the help of Classic Party Rentals and Bella Vista Designs, we created the most amazing tent completely draped in ivory chiffon, with chandeliers hanging everywhere. Guests entered the dinner reception through a smaller entry tent where their seating assignments sat on a table covered in white china mums. Inside the tent, guests sat at square tables covered in La Tavola Ice blue Dupionique linen, and the bridal party sat at a long table covered in the beautiful Monique linen. The florals were yummy arrangements of blush, peach and ivory peonies, garden roses and hydrangea

You never hear of set ups actually working out… but I guess our friends knew what they were doing. Our mutual friends talked Jared up so much that before I met him, I jokingly referred to him as “my future boyfriend”. Little did I know that my future boyfriend would one day become my husband. Three and a half years after our first date, Jared proposed to me underneath the Santa Monica pier at sunset. He played his guitar and sang a beautiful song he had written for me. After a lot of hugging and crying, we drank champagne at the top of the Huntley Hotel. Jared and I tried to make our wedding as personal and heartfelt as possible. This included a lot of DIY projects: programs, seating cards with a picture of us with each guest, and an outdoor Polaroid photo booth. We also wrote our own ceremony and vows. Our favorite part of the ceremony was when four of our closest friends sang “Hallelujah”. We used Jeff Buckley’s arrangement, but Jared and I re-wrote the lyrics to describe our relationship. Our two guitarists accompanied the quartet and our very talented friends harmonized perfectly. My mom made the ring bearer pillow that my cousin carried it. She used lace from her own wedding dress and ribbon from our wedding invitation. My parents used to go disco dancing when they were first married. So as a surprise to my mom and the rest of our guests, my dad and I planned a fake-out father-daughter dance. We started dancing to a slow song then transitioned into a fast, choreographed disco routine. Since we got married on 4th of July weekend, we ended our wedding with a sparkler send-off. Our guests lined the pathway with lit sparklers in hand as Jared and I made our grand exit.

Tim and I met as undergraduates at TCU in Fort Worth, TX. Following graduation we made our way to Los Angeles when I started Law School at Pepperdine. Tim worked to support me for a year and then began the MFA screenwriting program at USC. Five years after our first date, he proposed at Disneyland on a flying pirate ship in a room full of stars. With both of our families in Texas, planning a California wedding had its challenges. However, our wedding planner Ariel Yve, made everything a breeze. Her taste was exceptional and thanks to her keen eye we booked Villa de la Vina before it had officially opened. In the days leading up to the wedding Ariel ensured all the decisions were already taken care of so Tim and I could relax with our friends and family who had flown in. It’s true when they tell you the wedding day itself flashes by before you know it. Now, I have founded, Book Roots, a non-profit that does literacy outreach with under-served youth, Tim has written his first hour of network TV, and we have nothing but memories of a intimate event that exceeded any expectation.

Scott courted Angelina for five years. What makes this wedding unique is that Angelina and Scott are both wedding professionals in Santa Barbara, California. Angelina has her own business, La Femme Cinema & Photography, and Scott is the owner of Scott Topper Productions, a Wedding DJ Entertainment Company, Action Photo Booth and President of an International Public Speaking System, Impro Solutions.

images this page: melissamusgrove.com

Their romance was sparked on several occasions. Their first encounter was at a wedding professionals gathering and also at a wedding vendor fair in Santa Ynez, California. Finally after one year, they found themselves working at the same event. Sparks flew again and this time Scott didn’t let Angelina out of his sight! They immediately became each other’s love interest and she discovered that the secret to his heart was through his stomach. She received a little help from her amazing brother, an executive chef of recipes for love! After four years of Angelina preparing Scott fine home cooked gourmet cuisine, and several romantic excursions to New York, Philadelphia, Costa Rica, Florida, and San Francisco, Scott decided to pop the question. Once Angelina accepted his proposal the couple headed to Geneva for an Engagement Celebration with Scott’s Family. On June 18th, 2011 the happy couple exchanged their vows in Santa Barbara, California at a private estate

Ben and I met in college, at UCSD where we had the same major and minor. He would sit by me in class and “conveniently” need to borrow a pen and paper. It took us until mid way through our senior year to officially get together; however it was very clear soon after that we wanted to spend our lives together. After graduation we made our way to San Francisco and have been living there happily ever since. So when we began to plan our wedding five years later we knew that we wanted to have our celebration in the city where we have made our life together. We wanted our wedding to be a modern reflection of our city, Hotel Vitale was the perfect venue. It’s located right on the water by the famous Ferry Building, and is a certified “green” hotel. All of the food served at our cocktail style reception was organic and sustainably sourced. Plus it is absolutely beautiful, with a very clean aesthetic, and you can’t beat the view! Both our ceremony and reception were held outdoors - a bit risky in San Francisco, but we lucked out with a beautiful day. Our ceremony was on the 5th Floor Roof Top Terrance, while our reception was held on the first Floor Americano Patio. Ben is a very talented designer at an ad agency and so was able to design all of our paper goods, the invitations, rsvp cards, programs, thank you notes, signs. I did the crafting, design and flowers for the reception and ceremony myself (with help from the bridesmaids day-of), and my mom made all of our bouquets. The chuppah was hand crafted by my father-in-law, while the cover was actually a table cloth my great-great-grandmother made that I sewed ribbons to. It was truly a labor of love. Our wedding day was such an amazing day. We felt so blessed to be surrounded by all of our loved ones, it was such a supportive send off. I was surprisingly calm all day, even during the set up which I thought would feel hectic and stressful. I was on cloud nine. The only time I really felt the butterflies was right before I was about to walk down the aisle with my dad, but as soon as I saw Ben I felt like I just floated toward him. Our ceremony was really joyous, which was a great representation of how we are together. We make each other really happy, and laugh a lot. We wanted to share that with our guests and have a really positive and posh celebration. I think we accomplished that. It was an amazing day

Ventura Rental Center

is proud to be a family owned and operated

Since 1978, Ventura Rental Center has been a proud, family owned and operated corporation serving Ventura, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara Counties. Early on, the Center specialized in heavy equipment —backhoes, bulldozers, forklifts and the like—but in 1985 co-owner Heidi Whitcomb accepted the encouragement of her father, Ron Holley, and laid out a separate facility: Ventura Rental Party Center. 10 tables and 100 brown chairs were the initial investment. Ron had noticed a light in Heidi’s eyes as she thumbed through party and wedding catalogues, a spark he hadn’t seen while she considered backhoes. Fair enough he thought. He laid down a few “rules of business,” holding firm to the Company’s basic principles, and let one decision lead to another. Today, under Heidi’s supervision Ventura Rental Party Center participates in several hundred events every month: weddings are a specialty, but corporate, public and non-profit events are handled as well, some encompassing 8500 guests! Long a favorite with brides and wedding event professionals, Ventura Rental Party Center specifically aims to eliminate the guesswork associated with their planning efforts. Heidi points out that fully trained, personal consultants are assigned in every case. “The event rental business is a service business, and the creative participation of our employees and vendors is key to its success.” At Ventura Rental Party Center, everyday service means superior service. Every bride is assisted during every phase of the decision making process. From her Bridal Fair meeting, through the onsite wedding location visit, through the reservations, alterations and changes, to the equipment set-up and its eventual return, Heidi is quite clear: “We strive for top-notch customer service at all times, with each and every client. From the start to the finish of each event, service is the force driving us ahead of our competition. Often a bride will come in with specific ideas; she’ll know the color and feel of the linen she wants; she’ll know her tablescapes and the arrangement of her wedding chairs. No problem. Other times a bride will need one of our consultants to help coax her personal vision into full, three-dimensional view. We happily accept that responsibility.” Heidi and her staff believe in both collaboration and inspiration. “To better accommodate our brides, we now offer a full service design studio where they can sit down individually with their wedding planner and uncover the exact looks they desire. When a bride’s eyes light up with an “ah ha” moment, when a woman actually sees her wedding’s ideals brought to fruition, we could not be more satisfied.” Partnering is a key factor in the wedding business and Ventura Rental Party Center purposefully seeks out leading event professionals for collaboration. These people can add distinction to any layer of an event project. “Ventura Rental Party Center enjoys being known as a company that offers brides a solid, quality referral service. This is simply part of what we do.” Family owned and family operated, with four separate locations around town, Ventura Rental Center has brought the same service based credo to equipment and event rentals since 1978. That is: Stay abreast of the industry. Uncover and thoughtfully develop industry trends. Bring unique, innovative touches to decision-making. Heidi Whitcomb personally invites you to visit Ventura Rental Party Center’s newly remodeled showroom. Step in and experience the warmth and hospitality. You’ll find Heidi’s team lives and works under a single business mainstay, just as they have for more than thirty years:

Carr Vineyards & Winery is a small handcrafted winery located in downtown Santa Barbara

Note that The Winery’s Quonset Hut is in consistent demand for receptions of all sorts, as well as rehearsal dinners. A lofty ceiling, subtle lighting over rich, dark woodwork, décor that illustrates the vintner’s trade from seedling vines to casks and corks, this is a memorable, one-of-a-kind location, a place you’ll be delighted to share with family and friends. If a full-fledged reception is not in your Santa Barbara plans, The Winery can accommodate tasting groups of any size or composition, old or young, over a timeframe of your choice. Tables in its lounge area easily convert for side games of backgammon, chess and shuffleboard. In 1999, Ryan Carr produced his first exclusive vintage using grapes sourced from the unique microclimates of Santa Barbara County. Success followed success from then to the present day and Ryan’s Winery now specializes in ultra, premium or limited production wines handcrafted under at his personal guidance. Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, Grenache and Syrah, all have made names and won awards; however, it is Pinot Noir that has drawn Ryan’s particular attention. Sourced in the Santa Rita Hills Appellation, these wines haven’t merely been recognized among the finest in California; many have graded among the finest Pinot Noirs in the world. mattdayka.com

Ryan Carr graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Art and a taste for the unique. He served his wine making apprenticeship from the soil up, beginning in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley pruning for a vineyard management company. In 1998 he worked in several additional capacities for Central Coast Wine Services in Santa Maria, moving from vineyard to press to cask and bottling, thoroughly learning the basics at each stage of his development.

ibrant, handcrafted hospitality, that’s what the Carr Vineyards & Winery provides Santa Barbara. Housed in the industrial area of the American Riviera, The Winery’s glass doors open on a modern environment that is at once alluring and comfortable. Here you’ll find a sample glass of Ryan Carr’s 2009 “Late Harvest” Pinot Gris the perfect compliment to any of Santa Barbara’s brilliant, summery days. Visit in a winter squall, however, you’ll find The Winery’s tasting room just as warm and accommodating. In any season of the year, this is the perfect venue to declare a toast to love, good friends, or partnership.

In 1999, working in his garage with grapes he’d helped grow a few miles away, Ryan fabricated a Cabernet Sauvignon that was his first vintage. He produced ten cases, where the industry norm is measured in thousands, and didn’t charge for any of them. Instead he delivered them as gifts to friends and family, and then listened in pleasant surprise as friend after friend, brother and sister, sought to order more. From those ten cases his way forward was clear. With his friend and fellow vintner Andy Kahn, Ryan started a development company that allowed him to source, manage and fabricate his wines in conjunction with Andy’s winery, trading time, energy and his growing knowledge for the opportunity. It was Andy Kahn’s partnership that made Ryan’s first commercial vintage possible. In 2004 Ryan produced just over 1000 cases of the highest quality and, more importantly, he had his offerings win significant national recognition. By 2006, Ryan had either built or helped build three separate wineries and planted over 200 new acres of varietals in Santa Barbara County. In the spring of 2007, he opened the Carr Vineyards and Winery, one of only four full production wineries and tasting rooms in downtown Santa Barbara. The rest, as they say, is history. But it is a tasteful, living history, history you can experience for yourself with Ryan Carr as an accomplished guide and host. Why not drop by his convenient location on the American Riviera? Or, from out of town, call for a booking consultation or more detailed information? Carr Winery, 414 N. Salsipuedes Street, Santa Barbara , CA • 805.965.7985

A close mutual friend introduced Naomi and Scott on Summer Solstice in Huntington Beach. The connection they immediately shared was apparent to all of those around them. What started out as a friendship soon turned into love. After 18 months of dating, Scott completely surprised Naomi with a walk on the beach to a location where he planned a private romantic lunch overlooking the ocean off the cliffs in Laguna Beach. Naomi had no idea until that moment when he dropped to one knee that he had planned every detail
