modèle wedding tips:

{Leila Khalil ~ Be Inspired PR}

For the Bridesmaid: While getting married is one of the biggest events in life, being asked to be a bridesmaid is one of the biggest honors! It’s a celebrated tradition that only the best of girlfriends get to take part in. But despite all the excitement and newness of a wedding, stress is inevitable and as a bridesmaid your job is to alleviate stress, not add to it!

Here are a few tips to help you be the best bridemaid possible: • Check your ego at the door and don’t complain about your dress! It may not be the most flattering style or your favorite color, but keep in mind you’re just a piece of the bigger picture; the bride has thoughtfully selected your dress to coordinate with the rest of her special day. You may not get to be a fashionista on the wedding day, but your dress signifies you as a special part of the bride’s life... so rock it out and wear that dress with honor!

• Put effort into the bridal shower; the bridal shower is the one part of the wedding the bride gets to enjoy and not plan! For inspirations check out hostessblog.com, greenweddingshoes.com or 100layercake.com/blog. • Be prepared! An unexpected emergency may arise during the wedding, so this is your chance to save the day! Pack the essentials and I promise your bride will love you for life - aspirin, stain remover, super glue, safety pins, etc. If you’re in multiple weddings you may want to check out the mac-daddy of all wedding emergency kits on shop.mindyweiss.com.

Here are some ideas on how to show the love:

For the Bride: When you ask your friends to be bridesmaids, you’re not only asking them to stand with you on your wedding day, you’re also asking them to help you with the entire process. From the shower, to the bachelorette party, to the ceremony, your maids are going to be clocking hours helping to get everything ready. A gift showing your appreciation is not only a sweet gesture, it’s an important part of the bridesmaid tradition.

• Shop ‘til you drop! Visit the Wedding Chicks shop (www.weddingchicks.com/shop) for the cutest tees and totes - all customizable! And the best part is you can do it from the comfort of your own home; no need to face the crowded malls after work or on the weekends! • Bling them out! What girl doesn’t welcome gems and jewels with open arms? Tejani’s Bridesmaid Collection (www.tejani.com/bridal-jewelry/bridesmaids.html) has beautiful earrings and bracelets that let your girls bask in the light of jewels. Customize it to your wedding color palette and they’ll be all set for your big day!

• ‘Wood’ you be my bridesmaid? The JL Designs collection offers gorgeous balsa wood flowers that you can put on your wrist or put on your shelf! She offers jewelry and decor options so each maid gets a unique gift along with a cute tag asking “‘Wood’ you be my bridesmaid?”

OUR STORY: Sam and I were neighbors in the dorms our freshmen year at UCSB. We were good friends for over a year before we started dating and we’ve been together since then. Five years into our relationship, we took a little vacation to New York. On our last day, we went to the famed diamond district in NYC. One of the stores caught my eye so we went in to browse. It was one of those places where you can build your ring, so we started picking the setting and the diamond and before we knew it we had the beginnings of an engagement ring. He asked me right then and there to marry him and of course I said yes. Then we got to watch the jeweler set the diamond, and the ring was finished before our eyes.

Fun Tidbits: My something old, borrowed and blue was a brazilian aqua and diamond pendant that my grandfather bought my grandmother as an anniversary gift decades ago. They have been married over 60 years. The cake knife and server were my aunt ands uncle’s, used at their wedding. They’ve been married over 35 years. As part of the ceremony each of us brought a wine from the region where we grew up {Scott’s from Sonoma county and mine from San Luis Obispo where I went to college}. We each drank a sip of our own and then a sip of each other’s before reciting our vows and promising, that as we became one we would always love, cherish and respect each other as individuals. It was one of our favorite parts of the ceremony!

Florals: Garden roses, dahlias, sweetpeas, & echevaria were the focal flowers.

Inspiration Boards: how your wedding planner can turn your wedding fantasies into a reality

{Kelly Clark}

Have you ever seen a gorgeous wedding image in a magazine and thought, “I love this style, but there is no way it will fit into my budget!” Have no fear! By hiring a talented coordinator, your style does not have to be sacrificed at the altar!

At this point, Kelly reviews the bride’s binder and considering her budget, creates an Inspiration Board. “I create the inspiration board by using the bride’s original pictures and adding some new pictures. This gives the bride an idea of how we can realistically create her dream wedding”, explains Kelly.

Meet Kelly Clark Leonard, a wedding coordinator servicing the Santa Barbara and Los Angeles area since 2005. Her warm demeanor and Zen-like presence will make planning your wedding peaceful and fun! Best of all, she will help you plan your wedding with your style in mind, all while watching your budget. Originally from Santa Barbara and with a background in floral design, opening her own wedding coordination business was her dream since childhood, and a perfect fusion of all her talents. “I love interpreting different styles into a reality!” Kelly says with excitement. One of the first assignments Kelly gives to a new bride is to go buy all of the beautiful wedding magazines that she can find. Next, pull pages from the magazines that appeal to her style and save them in a binder. “Don’t think about price. Just cut out everything: flowers, lighting, makeup to hairstyles to shoes… everything that you love! It’s great to go online and pull images from there as well!”

32

modèle weddings.com

Once the bride is happy with the Inspiration Board, the planning begins! On a final note, Kelly encourages couples to hire their wedding planner first. “If a couple selects thier planner early, the planner is able to help them with all aspects of their wedding, offer advice, answer questions along the way and recommend vendors.” Find Kelly at www.eventoftheseasonsb.com

OUR STORY: I was not the girl who grew up picturing her wedding and planning for the big day all my life. So when the time came, I had no idea what I was going to do. I could not have executed everything without my aunt Ycela (or Chela as I lovingly call her). With every idea I had she was there to help make it happen and to problem solve when there was a dilemma. She is incredible. After all the hard work and planning, the day arrived and I was incredibly excited to see everything I had envisioned all put together. I wanted everyone to have an amazing time and to see and appreciate all the little personal touches. The day was perfect. Seeing every detail from the paper dahlia napkin rings and boxed chocolate favors to the star lanterns and signature cocktails was simply breathtaking. I would not have changed a thing. I got to marry my best friend in the world and share the day with our closest friends and wonderful family. Â

modèle designer spotlight:

{Elle & Jae Bridal}

One of the newest wedding accessory designers to hit this year’s Bridal Market (the wedding industry’s version of Fashion Week) was Elle & Jae Bridal, a best-friend team dedicated to creating exquisite wedding sashes and hair accessories for the modern bride. With gorgeous pieces in colors, fabrics and embellishments to die for, we were eager to sit down {Lauren & Joey}

with founder Joey Brooks and Lauren Born to find out

more about the women behind the brand, as well as the inspiration for the collection.

1.

How did you both get into design and decide to create Elle & Jae?

We both loved design in junior high and high school (where we met), but it was really in college where we were able to immerse ourselves in it. Joey at-

Martha Stewart, Vera Wang, Victoria’s Secret, Calvin Klein and J. Crew. We were also lucky enough to be able to work together to launch Jessica Simpson Swimwear before leaving New York to move back to LA. We say lucky because we realized how well we worked together and how closely our aesthetics

tended Washington University in St. Louis, where she studied Apparel Design, and Lauren attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and FIT where she focused on Textile & Surface Design. After college, both of us lived in NY for 8 years and we worked and consulted for numerous design companies, including

actually were when it came to color, design, and texture. After moving to LA and brainstorming for hours on end, taking field trips to flea markets and fabric stores, it just sort of hit us one day that we wanted to be in bridal. Once we started designing, we knew we had made the right choice.

42

modèle weddings.com

does the name Elle & Jae come 2.Where from? Elle is “L” spelled out for Lauren and Jae is “J” spelled out for Joey. We both just loved the way it sounded and looked in print. And we loved its simplicity.

3.What type of bride would wear your products?

She ranges from traditional to bohemian and everything in between. She’s modern, fashion savvy, and knows what she wants to look like on her wedding day. She definitely doesn’t want to look like every other bride out there, and she’s not scared of color, texture, sparkle, or a combination of the three. She understands how to accessorize to make herself look even more beautiful, and realizes how she can use her dress as a canvas to create a look all her own.

4.

Any future products or projects in the works you can share with our readers?

We are getting such a great response to our headpieces, we are planning on expanding that portion of the line a bit. We’ve had a lot of requests for birdcage veils that combine some of our existing pieces. There is also a plan to create an edited and more price-conscious collection dedicated to sashes for bridesmaids, as we are realizing from special orders and requests that brides want their maids to be able to wear these gorgeous accessories as well. And as always, there will be a lot of color!!

5.

Are there any other designers that you admire?

We are so inspired by Jenny Packham, Alexander McQueen, Jjunko Yoshioka, Elizabeth Fillmore, Elie Saab, Diane Von Furstenberg and Tracy Reese.

Trust us when we say that it’s only the beginning; we can’t wait to see what comes next from this fabulous designer duo! For more information visit: www.weddingsash.com.

All the Top Santa Barbara To-Do’s for the Week Before Your Wedding

1Sharing Your “Location” Story

Your guests are coming from near and far to this chosen destination. Let them know why Santa Barbara is so meaningful to you as a couple! Sharing your story will connect your guests to “your town,” and just why you selected it for your wedding celebration. Did you meet in a side street gallery, the dog park or a wine bar? Was that evening concert in the park the site of your first date? Was your proposal at the top of the steps of a historic building or during a walk along the water’s edge? Invite your guests to see and experience your favorite locations in and about town by providing them with a week’s worth of possible adventures and activities. Your wedding website can serve as an initial sneak peek and is a great opportunity to not only convey your story, but also to share information for their upcoming visit.

couple of hours, popular group tours conducted by the Santa Barbara Trolley Company (www.sbtrolley.com) or the Land Shark (www.out2seesb.com) can convey the spirit of Santa Barbara through sights, sounds and narrated history as they transport your guests through the streets (and open water!) of the downtown and waterfront areas. For a more intimate look at the city’s landmarks consider the self-guided option of the Red Tile Roof tour available through www.santabarbaracarfree.org/pdf-files/redtile. pdf. The architecture and history buffs among your guests can enjoy walking the streets of downtown at their own pace. For those with a more adventurous streak, there is Segway of Santa Barbara (www.segwayofsb. com/index.html) with a guided tour from a two-wheel perspective. How about a sunset cruise to end the day? Relax in the afternoon sun while you and your friends and family enjoy sailing aboard the Sunset Kidd (sunsetkidd. com) or catch the Live Jazz aboard the Double Dolphin available through The Santa Barbara Sailing Center (www.sbsail.com). Not only will you get to see some of Santa Barbara’s majestic coastline, but frequently seen are California’s sea lions, dolphins, whales and a variety of exotic birds.

Setting the Perfect Schedule

Free-Time Extras to Experience and Explore

Months before the event, it’s easy to get caught up in the pace of list making and itineraries. While schedules may look good on paper, consider them in action the week before the wedding. Is it realistic to expect your friends and family to attend all of your planned events while on an extended vacation? While your wedding celebration is certainly the highlight of their trip, keep in mind that they may want (and need) some time on their own. Consider optional events or unstructured activities that do not require reservations or pre-payment on your behalf, this will help to avoid additional fees or cancellation charges.

P

l lanning A Wedding should be a joyous and exciting time in one’s life, filled with tremendous love and excitement. Often absent from all the millions of planning checklists, however, are the stresses and frustrations that come with organizing your monumental day. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed, as almost every bride-to-be, here are ten tips to help you cope with all that’s going on.

1.

4.

2.

5.

Exercise – Whether you like it or not, we all know how great it is. Studies show that exercise not only improves our mood and focus, it reverses the detrimental effects of stress by releasing boosts of “soothing” brain chemicals that help us decompress. If you need any more convincing, exercise also improves body image, builds self-esteem and enriches sexuality, all of which make for fabulous accessories on your wedding day (and, of course, wedding night)! Listen to Music – “I’ve Got A Feeling” (and so do the Black Eyed Peas) that listening to music will not only make you feel good, but also it will put a smile on your face! Have a scroll through your iPod and find songs that make you want to get up and dance! Bonus: Don’t forget to write them down to give to your DJ or band – I can guarantee that if the songs give you ‘that feeling’, they’ll give your guests that feeling too!

3.

Take Deep Breaths – Taking deep breaths releases toxins from our bodies and helps clear those uneasy feelings and relieve emotional stress. Plus, it’s not a bad thing to practice; when it’s time to embark down that aisle, those deep breaths will ensure you make it to the alter standing!

56

modèle weddings.com

Cook – What’s the sense of registering if you don’t know how to use your new baster or lame (which, for all you non-chefs like myself, a lame is a double-sided blade used to slash the tops of bread loaves in artisan baking)? Find a recipe that whets your whistle and cook up an impromptu meal for you and your husband-to-be. Not only will he be surprised, he’ll also be pleased to know that all those registery scanning skills were put to good use. Delegate – As brides, we take on a lot and, at times, it’s simply too much. Phone a friend or family member. It’s healthy to vent, but healthier to delegate, and you’ll still have control without feeling overwhelmed.

6.

Have One To-Do List – Who doesn’t love a to-do list? Crossing things off a list can provide such a huge sense of gratification. However, multiple to-do lists can have the opposite effect and make all the planning seem extremely overwhelming. Condense all those lists onto one page and create one master wedding to-do list. Also, don’t forget to add all those lists you’ve got going in your head! Creating one list will help get you, and everyone else around you, organized and on track so you can relax and enjoy your wedding day.

7.

Pamper Yourself – Pick your poison (manicure or

each and every day. There’s no better time to start than

and just allow yourself to indulge in those few moments.

appreciation for all the blood, sweat and many (many) tears, your body will most definitely thank you.

8.

Keep a Gratitude List – Writing a daily gratitude list gives you brief moments to think about what makes

9.

Take a Break – Yes, you can take a break! And by break, I mean no wedding talk whatsoever, at least

one day each week. You and your fiancé’s happiness does not hinge on your wedding day alone. It’s an

10.

Stay in the Moment – As I watched the Royal Wedding, aside from the dress, celebrity sightings and magnificent hats, I took notice of how present Kate was. With all that was going on, Kate was truly living in

and taking in the moment. Like it or not, we live in a world focused around the “what’s next”, shifting our attention

your desired style. If your hair is overly thick, a soothing treatment will help control your frizz and look polished. To avoid headaches, for thick hair a loose style will be the most comfortable.”

Q

: What is your day of wedding beauty advice? Sarah Monachos - Stylist/Makeup Artist: “Always have a preview of your hair & makeup scheduled weeks before your wedding. The night before, go to bed with a clean, moisturized face, and for a spa-like feel, lay cut cucumbers on your eyes for ten minutes. On the day, wear something comfortable (either a button down or zip-up shirt) and have your face clean and free of all makeup. Make sure not to have your hair up or in a ponytail, to prevent an unwanted crease in your hair.”

Q

: What hairstyles are best for short hair, long hair, thick or thin? Stevee Lynn Mashburn - Stylist/Makeup Artist: “Extensions are always an option if your hair is fine or too short for

: What special treatments does Freddie B Salon offer for brides? Shonti Conner - Stylist/Makeup Artist: “We offer onsite service for bridal hair styling and make-up services. Brides receive complimentary pre-trial consultations before they book the big day. This way, brides can try out styling in a calm, relaxed environment.”

Q

: What are you currently inspired by? Brooke Beason - Stylist: “I am inspired by architecture. Geometry and textures translate into hair very well. In addition, it gives me a sense of foundation and structure as well as a creative palate to run with my ideas.”

wants her photography to “capture your wedding with artistic flair and stylish elegance.”

According to Jessica Lewis, choosing a photographer for your wedding should be a very important concern. The Brooks Institute graduate, who began her photography career eight years ago, says she loves weddings because she believes that “for many it is the most important day of their lives, and while the day itself can come and go rather quickly, the photographs will last forever, perpetually bringing the participants back to that special time and the joyous feelings of love and togetherness that it inspired.” View some of Jessica’s past work and you will be impressed by the artistry of her photographic eye, and the pictures that seem to be the perfect blend between ageless and modern. You will further feel in good hands when you read the glowing endorsements Jessica has received from her past engagements, praising her not only for their beautiful wedding pictures, but for the comfort level she instills in her clients. ~ Tom Flynn
