n line with our vision to go international with ModelsnTrends magazine and as promised in the last issue, this time we bring to you a renowned international model and actress on the cover. She is none other than Olena Koch, who has been Ms. Germany in year 2008; has acted in two Russian movies and is all set for the launch of the third one. Not only this, but Olena has revealed the inside fabric of the modelling and fashion world in her interview, which I am sure will help our models and all concerned. The quest towards this glamour world is endless and needs to be approached with a forthright perspective. I am getting many more proposals from the fashion experts around the world wanting to get involved in the making of ModelsnTrends. Surely, this would mean better synergies and more activities happening nationally and internationally. On the national front, we bring you a double bonanza this time. If you remember, we had introduced the ‘Little Master’ Yathaarth (Noddy) to you in our May 2008 issue when he had just signed up for the movie Tum Milo Toh Sahi starring Nana Patekar and Dimple Kapadia. Well, the movie has just got released. God bless you son for a job well done! The other champ is the ‘darling of all hearts’ Ferena Wazeir with her just released movie Sadiyaan, which is a must watch. So do watch both our stars in action. It was unusual and unfortunate that the first day of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) Autumn-Winter 2010 (held at the NSIC exhibition complex, Okhla, New Delhi), was a complete wash out. Considering that the eyes of the fashion world are set on this ‘Pride of India’, one would think that the fire department and the local law and order machinery could have shown more understanding and compassion in handling this situation. However, it was the vast experience of the organisers Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and the deft handling by its president, Sunil Sethi that ensured a smooth sailing, the next day onwards. After the remarkable success of the last WIFW Spring Summer 2010, this 15th edition witnessed a phenomenal participation of 130 designers, who mesmerised the fashionistas with their flamboyant collections. From the downtrodden woman to the demand for justice and equality, the woman of today has come a long way. The designers have painted the canvas and the women of substance, self reliance and power have walked down the ramp this season, with some adorning the military attires in all its hues. The signal is clear that the women will not only stand up for their rights, but will also do so for the integrity of their nation. We will bring to you a selection of these collections in the magazine during the coming months. Very soon, you will also be able to see all the designer collections on our web portal www.modelsntrends.com . I am grateful to God for the timely intervention in thwarting a major happening. Rohit Bal went through a rough patch with a heart condition However, ‘all iz well’ and our adviser, dear Gudda is fast getting ready to be back in action with his heart winning smile. ModelsnTrends has joined hands as the media and glamour partner for a very progressive beauty pageant ‘Miss North India 2010’. Thirty five contestants have been selected from Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Jaipur and other prominent cities. They will be groomed by experts for the finale to be held on April 25, 2010. The winners and runners up will be promoted extensively in our magazine and web portal. ModelsnTrends has also found a major opening in the hearts of the Northeast region. Very soon, we will also be part of a major talent hunt there. Well my dear friends, it’s time to go now. Do take care of yourself from this scorching heat and do read the tips on fashion, beauty and skin care to keep you surging ahead.

ummer season brings with it ‘fun and cool fashion’, which is sure to enliven your mood swings. With this concept, we planned the shoot with ‘Ms. Germany’, Olena Koch. This sensual and striking international beauty got going with the spirit of the concept and to everyone’s delight added lots of fun, liveliness and masti, adorning the designer maestros Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna’s urbane and opulent clothes. Fashion photographer Raj Chaturvedi took no time to catch her vivaciousness with his camera. He perfectly explored and utilised the jovial mood of Olena to make her come out a true sensation. The makeup by Nidhi and Ridhi, hair by Yangkyi and exuberant styling by S. T. Benjamen Anal made the entire shoot really stirring. Surely, you would rave about the bubbling beauty, so do turn to page 42.

Sleek, minimalist clothes, stimulating perfumes, trendy watches, sexy and provocative advertising campaigns are the endemic pros of Calvin Klein brand that transformed a small enterprise of two childhood friends into one of the most successful brands in the world‌ 22

his legendry name in fashion came into existence when American designer Calvin Klein and his close friend, Barry Schwartz set up a women's coat business in 1968 with ten thousand US dollars. As luck would have it, a merchandising manager from Bonwit Teller, a departmental store of New York City, visited their small shop. Appreciating their collection, he placed an order of fifty thousand US dollars worth of merchandise. This turning point in Calvin’s life further encouraged him to create designer sportswear line. However, the brand became extremely successful after the launch of tight fitting designer jeans in the 70’s, at affordable prices.

Page 23

The provocative advertisements of the jeans featured a 15-year-old Brooke Shields cooing, ‘Nothing comes between me and my Calvins’. This elevated Calvin’s designer status leading him to rule the roost. He now became the heartthrob of New York's urban youth. His designs were always refined but away from boredom. Clean lines and spare shapes, simple yet effective and this uniqueness paved the way for him receiving the fashion Oscar, the ‘Coty Award’. Surprisingly, he was the youngest designer ever to have been awarded this prestigious award three years in a row, 1973, 1974 and 1975. Calvin’s fresh and unpretentious designing later revolutionised the underwear market in 1982, with the launch of boxers and briefs.

He blurred the boundaries between the sexes, designing masculine bikinis for women. It was the first time that boy cut briefs were made for women. Calvin believed that there is something incredibly sexy about a woman wearing her boyfriend's T-shirt and underwear. With the help of some startling advertisements featuring semi naked supermodels Kate Moss, Christy Turlington and Mark Wahlberg for men’s underwear, the CK underwear business became hugely successful. According to him, “Fashion is about change and for me, the philosophy is always the same that the clothes have to be really modern and have to make women look really beautiful. However, it is fun to keep changing the silhouettes, fabrics and colours.” Such novel perception to define fashion was welcomed and the Council of Fashion Designers of America conferred upon him the award for outstanding design in both women’s wear and men’s wear in 1982, 1983 and 1986. In 1985, the brand touched another milestone with the launch of its first

24

fragrance, ‘Obsession’, followed by ‘Eternity’ in 1988 and ‘Escape’ thereafter in 1991. Men versions of these fragrances were also created. The launch of ‘CK One’ with unisex fragrance in 1994 was the first of its kind presentation to the fashion world. This was a revolutionary fragrance, not only for its appeal to men and women, but also because of the edgy, undeniably cool advertising campaign that was used to market it. ‘Ck Be’, another unisex fragrance was the follow up to ‘Ck One’, and both enjoy popularity till the present day. Newer additions to the family of Calvin Klein fragrances are the perfumes, ‘Contradiction’, ‘Truth’ and ‘Euphoria’. Calvin Klein, ‘the supreme master of minimalism’ consented that fashion can be applied to many forms of one's lifestyle, and it is a logical extension to design for homes. With this attitude, he penetrated the home decor market, where accessories ranging from bath towels to bed linens bear his name. With the passage of time, the brand as well as its makers have witnessed many ups and downs and in mid-December 2002,

Calvin Klein Inc. (CKI) was finally sold to shirt maker Phillips Van Heusen Corporation. Today, the fashion house is one of the leading fashion design and marketing studios in the world. It designs and markets men and women apparel collections and a range of other products that are manufactured and marketed worldwide through an extensive network of licensing agreements. From apparels to fashion accessories, innerwear, fragrances, cosmetics and home décor products, the famous American designer’ name is the most frequently purchased brand in the world and one of the top three most

coveted brands as per ‘AC Nielson Global Luxury Brand’ study. Francisco Costa is the current creative director for Calvin Klein collection for women. Italo Zucchelli is the head designer for Calvin Klein collection for menswear and Kevin Carriagan is the creative director of the ck Calvin Klein and Calvin Klein (white label) brands. However, as Calvin Klein himself said that the brand is everything. "I have met many people, who did not even know that there was a person called Calvin Klein. They thought it was just the name of a product."

Calvin Klein is a young, vibrant and chic brand for passionate people. I like its stylish and well-fit jeans that are perfect for flaunting a sexy style statement. I also love the sturdy, yet stylish eyewear and the exciting fragrance of its perfumes, especially of ckIN2U. The brand is really a must have for a fashion front-runner.

Calvin Klein has certainly gained impetus amongst the contemporary fashionable youth. Its perfect skinny jeans; softer, sexy, classy underwear and refreshing fragrance are really legendary. Pair the skinny jeans with a cotton white shirt or geometric patterned T-shirt to soothe the blazing summer days and to embody cool fashion. — Sahil Shroff, model and actor

The ideal tattoo studio by Anu Singh Pruthi, Tattoo Empire India

amela Anderson rightly said, “Tattoos are like stories and are symbolic of the important moments in our lives. Sitting down, talking about where you got each tattoo and what it symbolises, is really beautiful. Tattoos can make a person look good and are like an extension of the personality. However, these can turn out to be an eye sore if not crafted by a trained artist. Moreover, there is a strong possibility of health risks, such as skin infection, blood borne pathogens, cross-contamination and permanent scarring, if the design installation process of a tattoo is poorly implemented. Hence, think before you ink and never compromise, as a tattoo remains a part of you for the entire life. A little knowledge and awareness goes a long way in making the tattooing experience healthy and pleasant. Therefore, spend considerable time to finalise a tattoo studio before marking yourself with a chosen design. Consider these vital areas before embarking upon this exciting journey.

Basic shop hygiene: A tattoo studio

should be neat and clean. The furniture and fixtures should be non-porous so as to allow proper disinfection of the working area. Special attention should be given to the storage of equipment, inks and their handling. There should not be any inaccessible area at the workstation, as this can be a breeding ground for bacteria and germs.

Sterilisation equipment: Always check the sterilisation equipment being used. Worldwide, an autoclave is the only equipment acceptable for 100 per cent sterilisation. Self sealing sterilisation pouches with an indicator should also be used for a successful sterilisation cycle. All instruments should be sealed in pouches with respective date of sterilisation marked on them. This ensures highest level of safety in a tattoo studio.

Page 34 - 35:Layout 1

4/2/2010

4:17 PM

Page 35

Cleaning the equipment: The pre-sterilisation process involves disinfecting the equipment with antibacterial agents. Use an ultrasonic cleaner or manually rub off any dirt and grime. Inspect the equipment closely for any dry ink deposits. Everything used to ink a tattoo should have a sparkling clean shine to it.

Vaccination: It is not a common practice to get Hepatitis B vaccination. However, it is very important that an artist and his client protect themselves against this killer disease and get vaccinated.

New consumables: Everything that is used for the tattoo

process should be new or should have been sterilised. In other words, new or sterilised consumables, such as gloves, razors, needles, ink cups, vaseline, tissues and covers should only be used. These should be disposed off after completing the tattoo process. Do remember that anything used once should never go back to the universal container. Some artists use the deodorant stick directly on the skin of a customer. Doing this can be harmful, as it carries bacteria from one client to another. Artists also give the needle to their customers for any future touch-ups. A needle once used, should be destroyed and never used again, as it carries a risk of cross-contamination and skin infections. A studio should give an option to its clients to choose between sterilised or disposable and one-time use plastic tips, grips and ink shots for usage in the tattoo process.

Protective covering: Everything like the tattoo machine, clip cord and spray bottles used for the tattoo should have a disposable plastic covering on it. The tattoo artist should wear gloves, face mask and apron during the process. Disposable sheets should be used under the tattooed body part. These precautions ensure that there is no risk of cross-contamination. Artist’s credentials: First of all, check the artist’s

portfolio and not the tattoo flash. Do not be impressed by the pretty pictures of tattoos made by the artist. Instead, make it a point to scrutinise the line work, colours blending, shading work, dimension and depth. This will help you to decide whether the artist is capable of handling a design of your choice or not.

After care: Take proper care of the tattoo till the time it is properly healed. A studio should provide the basic after care products for good results and a list of do’s and don’ts. If you do not ensure proper hygiene during the healing period, it can cause infection.

Do not hesitate to ask questions from the tattoo artist or the studio in-charge. Look for the correct answers by following your natural instinct and judgement. For example, if you have asked to see the autoclave, then ‘we do sterilisation at home’ answer is not acceptable. God forbid if their answer is as vague as their sterilisation process, because for complete sterilisation, the equipment has to be kept at 15 PSI steam pressure for 30 minutes. The awareness of these simple precautionary measures will ensure a memorable experience and you will cherish your favourite tattoo through life.

Was designing always on your cards or happened by chance? What was your vision while entering into the fashion industry? Of course, designing has always been on my cards. Nothing happened by chance for me. I had realised at an early age that I can make this passion into my profession. I wanted to explore and form my imagination through the medium of garments and to dress up the who’s who of the world. My vision was to be the greatest couturier of all times. In a short span of time and at a young age, you have earned a name to reckon with in the fashion industry. How do you feel about it? I am extremely thankful to the Almighty for His blessings! However, there is still a long way to go, to reach the heights that I want to scale and am absolutely confident that I will succeed. When did you decide to launch your own label ‘Manav Gangwani’? What was your inspiration behind your label? There was no such decision to launch the label. It was what I wanted to do ever since I grew up. It started with “Manav Gangwani” in 1999 and diversified to “Manav Gangwani Couture” in 2004. My inspiration is a sensuous woman, who is bold; is willing to experiment and is not afraid to make a style statement. What is the forte of the label? How does MG cater to the fashion loving men and women? “Manav Gangwani Couture” is out and out a couture brand. The range is tremendous and I can play without any restrictions. On the other hand, the label “Manav Gangwani” gives me the freedom to create clothes that are more diffusion. Here the embroidery is toned down a little and can be repeated sometimes. Then there is my classic label “MG TIMELESS”. Here each design is one of its kind, never repeated, created lovingly and exclusively for a few special clients and royalty.

— Raveena Tandon Thadani, actress and socialite

HDIL India Couture Week 2009

Manav’s creations are versatile. His creativity is flamboyant, yet elegant and classic, all at the same time. His designing is fabulous and outstanding. I love wearing his clothes as these make me feel really special!

You have brought a refreshing change to the men's wardrobe but still the segment is not as flourishing as women’s wear. What is the reason behind it? Well, women constantly desire more clothes. They add on to their wardrobe with every changing trend. Most men on the other hand are usually content with a couple of pairs of jeans, a few pairs of trousers and shirts. Probably prêt would work better for men but designing prêt does not give me as much satisfaction as couture does. How essential are inspiration and creativity for the success of a collection? What are your sources of inspiration? What can determine the success of a collection more than creativity and how else can creativity be born, but out of inspiration? Therefore, it is obvious that both factors are absolutely integral to each other in the creation of a successful collection. There is no particular source of inspiration. It can be anything that catches my eye - be it a colour or an event and at times something from nature.

Designer wear is still inaccessible to masses. Is fashion restricted to any particular category? Although fashion has no restrictions, yet designer wear is not available to the masses, especially I am not ready for it yet. Today, everyone has the option of purchasing something within their reach and the choice is vast. Whom do you consider as the style icon or best dressed man and woman? SRK and Zayed Khan are the best dressed men in India and Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp on an international level. I consider Rekha as the best dressed woman and love the panache of Queen Rania of Jordan and Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie.

Favourite colour: Red, pink and black. Manav - the extrovert or introvert: Socially an extrovert and personally an introvert.

Favourite category: Women’s couture, of course! Favourite past time: Watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Favourite model: Naomi Campbell Favourite actor/actress: SRK and Kareena Kapoor Favourite outfit: Jeans and T-shirt Favourite international fashion brand: Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton and Hermes.

Favourite fabrics: Too many. I love using new

French fabrics.

Favourite Indian fashion designer: My friend,

the brilliant “Gudda”.

Favourite foreign fashion designer: John Galliano A fashion tip: Fashion is not about being

comfortable, it is about making a statement. If you want to be comfortable then sit at home in your PJ’s and watch TV. 40

Manav is not only one of my dearest friends, but also truly a talented designer. I actually call him the ‘Saree Couturier’ because I think his sarees are exquisite, unique and flamboyant, just like him. His stunning gowns are excellent, and whenever I wear one of his creations, I feel like a princess. The gown that he designed for me to wear at the IIFA is one of my all time favourites. It was absolutely gorgeous and eye-catching.

Who are the customers of MG? Well known celebrities like Sussanne Roshan, Zayed Khan, Malaika Khan, Shruti Hassan, Dino Morea, Lara Dutta, Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, Mughda Godse, Tabu, Sophie Chaudhary, R. Madhavan, Ayesha Thapar, Soha Ali Khan Pataudi, Sharmila Tagore Pataudi, Dia Mirza, Riddhima Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Peter Andre and of course, the very gorgeous Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. A few political bigwigs like the highly respected and refined Priyanka Gandhi, Smita Thackeray, Amar Singh among others. Friends from the fashion fraternity like designer Rohit Bal and Manish Malhotra have shown their credence in me as a designer and a brand by walking the ramp for my shows. The King of Bhutan ‘His Highness Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck’ is a personal friend and I have the pleasure of designing for His Highness on a regular basis. What is the role of style, passion and sensuality in fashion? Style, passion and sensuality play a vital role. I consider these qualities as the ‘essentials’ of fashion. What are your favourite garments that present a unique style statement for the man and woman? Though it depends on the occasion, yet the saree pretty much fits in anywhere and can be adapted to make a style statement, which is indisputable. For men, I guess a jacket can be constructed in a million ways to make a statement, whether worn with jeans, trousers or even dhoti.

Manav’s couture designs are as opulent, dramatic and luxurious, as he himself is. If one is looking to make a statement, it would be impossible to do so, without donning his creations.

What changes do you observe in Indian fashion and international fashion? Indian fashion is already making a mark globally and boundaries are slowly dissolving. The very fact that Indian culture and tradition has so much to offer, which is translated by us in the form of clothes, has made a huge impact across the world. What according to you is ‘Haute Couture’ as the definition is getting quite confusing nowadays? How do you see the future of couture fashion in India? Haute Couture is emblematic of the triumph of costume and fashion; the modern entity that combines novelty and synergy. It is essentially customised apparel created to the needs and tastes of a particular client. The future of couture fashion in India is very exciting. Today, many people are open to fashion and thereby to couture garments than they were in the yesteryears. People are willing to experiment, as well explore their own fashion quotient.

— Rahul Khanna, fashion designer

HDIL India Couture Week 2009

In India, the popularity of a designer is measured by the number of Bollywood stars that the creations are made for. How do you see this trend? I am not exactly convinced with this point of view. If a designer is good, he gets recognised. However, I guess the visibility of a Bollywood actor goes a long way in increasing the designers’ popularity. More and more fashion weeks are happening nowadays. Is this trend good for designers or is putting a burden on their creativity to present something new frequently? The point is not that it is a burden on creativity but the exclusivity and charm of the fashion shows has been lost. Thank God, I am a couturier and am not in this rat race. Just do a couture show once a year and you are on the roll. Tell us about your other ventures like MG décor, paintings and music? Is it business or hobby? My passion is designing and creating. Be it garments, venues, paintings or music; there is no line demarcating business or hobby. For me, my art is my work.

How do you see the current modelling world, especially with the inflow of many new faces? The inflow of new faces is refreshing and with the increase in the number of designers and fashion shows, it is a good thing. No doubt, the modelling world is thriving. What do you look for in a model for presenting your collection? The most important aspect of a model is a perfect attitude. I do not believe that there is a perfect size. My idea is to design clothes to suit the figure, not the other way around. How would you like to be remembered amongst the fashion fraternity? A living fashion legend…When I will be in my 60’s!

COVER GIRL

OLENA KOCH Ms. Germany 2008-09 beauty pageant winner, Olena Koch believes that actions speak louder than words. This green eyed beauty was invited recently to share her vision and mindset with ModelsnTrends. Olena has worked with renowned Russian director Aleksandr Shapiro for the movies Kheppi pipl (aka Happy People) and Besprno. Here the tall, blonde, eye candy girl spills the beans about the fashion and glamour world yonder...

You always wanted to become a model or it happened by chance? I like beautiful dresses, new places and good looking people right from my childhood. When I grew up, this fondness became an eternal passion. Therefore, I decided to be a part of the glamorous world and started modelling. This profession has fulfilled all my desires. Later, I got a chance to participate in the Ms. Germany beauty contest and fortunately, I won. Now my passion is my profession. What is essential for a model – beauty, brains or fashion sense? For me, all these are essential because if you are beautiful then no doubt people will get attracted towards you. However, if you have no intelligence then soon they

will definitely be fed up of you. Your beauty alone cannot help you to be a centre of attraction for a long time. So, I guess beauty with brains is a perfect combination for any model. Being a part of the fashion world, you should also have a fashion sense to hone your looks. Tell us about some qualities, which are necessary to become a good model? A model should have a disciplined lifestyle. Although this profession has odd working hours but one should be very careful about one’s health, body and food. Do not skip food because of the fear of being over weight. A balanced diet is necessary for a model to be fit and fine. Stay away from alcohol, smoking and late night parties. Apart from these qualities, you should also have a good sense of humour, to tackle the weird situations that may happen. Do you think a parallel career option is necessary for models? Everybody knows that modelling is a not a permanent profession for one’s bread and butter. You cannot be in this profession forever. People often consider modelling as ‘child’s play’. What is your stand on this? It depends on the way you assess a line of work. I do not think that any job on this earth is very easy. Yes, sometimes it may be trouble-free but at other times, it is really tiresome and chaotic. Anyways, it is easier said than done.

What is the one thing, which you would like to change in this glamour industry? I think it is related to torturing one’s body by starving in order to look good, slim and fit, which is quite common amongst models these days. A model should understand that proper care of body and health is essential for the best performance and to cope up with the work pressure. I really hate this skeleton- shaped trend in the name of fashion and fitness. How crucial is a good portfolio for a model’s career? It is a vital part of any models’ career and a sure bet for getting good assignments. It is not possible for a model to be present everywhere physically to meet people for assignments, so a properly conceived folio works wonderfully. Also remember that everything from styling, make-up, photographer to clothes, along with your attitude should be well organised. It is the team work that does justice to a beautiful face by creating a progressive portfolio. How essential is it for a model to keep fit and well-versed with contemporary fashion? It is very important. For example, if I go shopping or walk the ramp wearing a designer’s collection or be it any fashionable apparel, it should suit my posture and body frame,

otherwise I will look like a scarecrow. It is also being unjust to a magnificent garment, if you do not carry it in a good and effective manner. It is the body, style and fashion sense that makes a creation really fabulous, otherwise a mannequin can also carry a fashion look. How is the German modelling world? Have you ever suffered any kind of sexual exploitation in the industry? German modelling world is not very competitive. We have good opportunities to flourish, especially in the European fashion circuit. However, unlike European and western countries, we do not prefer excess of black or white colours. Fashion here is very minimal and feminine. The most important thing is that the laws against exploitation are very strict in Germany. I have not faced any kind of harassment till date and I have worked with very professional people. What is your view about Indian models and the modelling world? I like Indian models. They are very feminine and carry any apparel with great gusto and panache. The good thing is that they love vibrant dresses and do not stick to any one particular colour. Do you ever feel jealous of the achievements of your fellow model friends? Not at all. I love meeting people and making friends. It is a wonderful industry and I have real good friends here. A friendly nature is more soothing and fruitful than being jealous of someone. What is your opinion about the gay culture? We should understand that gays are also human beings like us. I do not think that being gay is a fashion. It is their

inborn nature, not an imposed trait or a sham. In fact, it is quite acceptable where I come from. I have many gay friends but surely the society will take time to accept them. Who is your style icon? Who do you think is the ultimate fashion diva and why? Italian actress Sophia Loren is my style icon. According to me, French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s wife Carla Bruni is the ultimate fashion diva. It is really amazing to see that how beautifully she carries any apparel. A fashion tip, which you think really works? What is your style statement? Whatever you put on, just make sure that it goes well with your personality. I love to be in different styles every time, to present myself publicly. I love to wear a business dress, party wear and long gowns with high heels.

What do you think is the perfect size for the ramp? It depends upon the requirements of a show. It can be different for different designer collections and also as per the prevalent parameters of a country. What are your future plans? Are you ready for acting in films? Nobody knows what future has in store. However, I want to become a famous model worldwide. I have worked in two Russian movies and another is in the pipeline. Who is your favourite Indian fashion designer and why? Ritu Beri is my favourite Indian fashion designer. I like her collection, her feminine cuts, silhouettes, cosy fabrics, various colours and shades. What is your advice to the aspiring models? It will be quite early for me to advise others, since I too have miles to go in this profession. However, I would say that always put in your mind and soul into your work. Do not be tempted by short term gains. Always look and think twice before you leap, as this profession is full of mirages.

Fly Your Simulator

Yuri

(Training pageant winners for over a decade now)

Model: Shardha Courtesy: Rahul Dutta Photography

H

ere is a question for you. What is the similarity between preparing for a beauty pageant and learning how to fly a supersonic fighter plane ? The answer lies in the learning process. I learnt to fly as a fighter jock in the Air force, and one of the important ingredients of our training was a thing called ‘the simulator’. The simulator was a machine that looked like the inside of an airplane cockpit complete with switches, buttons, instruments and a joystick. You could sit inside and fly the simulator just like you flew a regular plane. You could take off, land, and do various maneuvers. They even had a combat simulator to train the pilots for dog fights. Except that the simulator never really left earth and you could make mistakes without the fear of crashing into the ground. A similar simulation process can be adopted for pageant training too. You need the help of your family and friends. Seat them in a big room and they become your audience. Ask five of them to act like the contest judges. Believe me, performing in front of your friends and relatives is tougher than performing in front of strangers. Now go through your entire routine, whether it is the talent round, the initial introduction, the walk, the swim suit round, the evening gown round, or the Q&A rounds. Do everything that is meant to be done and take this seriously. Get over your initial embarrassment and do not laugh off the mistakes. Select your judges carefully, do not

Page 46 - 47:Layout 1

4/2/2010

4:26 PM

Page 47

allow them and the others to take it lightly. Request them to put in some work into selecting the right questions and then be critical in a constructive manner. It should all be simulated exactly like it would be at the real pageant, except that you will be the only contestant. After you have gone through the routine, sit down with the judges and anybody else who wants to provide an input and discuss your performance. Debate the questions and your answers; make a list of lessons learnt and figure out which areas you need to work on. If you can manage it, film the entire performance and watch it a number of times to know your weak areas. Another important aspect of the flying training simulator was the simulation of emergencies. The instructor sitting outside the simulator would suddenly put on the fire alarm or give you some other potentially dangerous situation. The person flying the simulator would take necessary action, activate the right switches, control the aircraft suitably and nurse it back to a safe landing. If he made any mistakes, the simulator would crash, not really, and the instructor would tell the trainee how to correctly handle that emergency. They would then practice again, till the trainee could handle the emergencies with his eyes closed. Do some similar exercises in your ‘pageant simulator’ too. Heels do break in pageants; contestants do trip over their evening gowns; wardrobe malfunctions are not uncommon; one could be stuck for an answer in the Q&A round and there could be several other things that could go wrong. Simulate and practice them. It will not only train you to handle emergencies better, but it also will reduce your nervousness and stage fright. You are definitely going to be more confident and give a winning performance on the D-day. Fly your ‘pageant simulator’ as often as you can manage to do so. Plan for it, work on it as sincerely as you can and see the results for yourself.

This exercise is priceless because although you are doing this in the safety of having your own people around you, the experience will stand you in good stead when you actually get on to that pageant stage. I’ll see you next month with more tips on winning that crown. In the mean time, answer this month’s simple question and win yourself 3 free one-on-one training sessions with me. It’ll help you on your way to the crown. Plus it’s easy because the answer to the question lies somewhere in this article. The Question : Practicing emergencies that could happen on s tage will make you more conf ident of your per for manc e. (True or False ?) Shoot off your answer to yuri@modelsntrends.com. Beauty pageants are really helpful in providing instant recognition and a tremendous platform to venture into the glamorous world of modelling. n the fast changing scenario, the definition of beauty is rapidly changing. The youth, especially females are becoming increasingly more aware about their looks. For them, the beauty is no longer limited to make-up only, but is also about presenting themselves with panache and style. Their target is no longer to be just a beautiful ‘baby doll’ but a beauty with brains and skills. Thus, the concept of beauty has undergone a sea change. This penchant is reflected in the manner that most beauty contests and pageants are conducted. Here are some renowned beauty pageants for modern, confident and talented young girls.

Miss World: This is the oldest

international beauty contest, which was initiated by Eric Morley in 1951. He adapted the seaside beauty contest into fashion shows and developed this into a national beauty pageant and a TV concept. Together with his wife Julia, he presided over this competition, which was watched by more than 20 million in Britain at its peak in the 1970’s and early 1980’s. Kaiane Aldorino from Gibraltar is the present Miss World.

Titleholders for the last twenty years:

Gina Tolleson from United States(1990) Ninibeth Leal from Venezuela(1991) Julia Kourotchkina from Russia (1992) Lisa Hanna from Jamaica (1993) Aishwarya Rai from India (1994) Jacqueline Aguilera from Venezuela (1995) Irene Skliva from Greece (1996) Diana Hayden from India (1997) Linor Abargil from Israel(1998) Yukta Mookhey from India (1999) Priyanka Chopra from India (2000) Agbani Darego from Nigeria (2001) Azra Akın from Turkey (2002) Rosanna Davison from Ireland (2003) María Julia Mantilla from Peru (2004) Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir from Iceland ( 2005) Taťána Kuchařová from Czech Republic (2006) Zhang Zilin from China (2007) Ksenia Sukhinova from Russia (2008) Kaiane Aldorino from Gibraltar (2009)

Miss Universe: This annual

international beauty contest is run by the Miss Universe Organisation. California’s clothing company Pacific Mills founded the contest in 1952. In 1996, American business tycoon Donald Trump acquired

The current Miss Universe is Stefanía Fernández from Venezuela. Femina Miss India: This contest is a national beauty pageant, which selects three winners annually to compete internationally. It is organised by Femina magazine and is one of the recognised pageants that produces international beauty queens. models on the ramp and in front of the camera. Mrs. Wadia is also one of the forces behind the Miss India beauty pageant. The contest has received extraordinary national and international acclaim over the years as its winners have won several titles at various international pageants.

PC Jewellers Miss India Worldwide-India: Miss India Worldwide

commenced 17 years ago as a beauty pageant meant primarily for the NRI populations to select a beauty queen from the Indian diaspora. The objective of the pageant is to encourage, motivate and guide the winners in promoting Indian culture and performing arts the world over. With affiliates in over 30 countries, the Indian chapter of this pageant was held for the first time in Delhi in February, 2008 by Tijori Entertainment & Kaleidovision in association with HT Media Ltd. The title sponsor for this event was PC Jewellers and the event was called PC Jewellers Miss India Worldwide-India. The winner of 2008, Shagun Sarabhai represented India at the seventeenth annual Miss India Worldwide pageant at South Africa and was crowned the winner. The winner of 2009, Deepthi Varughese represented India at the eighteenth annual Miss India Worldwide pageant held at Durban, South Africa. Many other state level beauty pageants do happen on a micro level and there is a need to harness these on to a macro level.

Winning such a contest can be a remarkable episode, in any participant’s life. It can tremendously change the life of a participant, and of course, that of the winner. I can say that after winning this contest, I got status and recognition in the industry. This contest provided me a chance to show my calibre to the world. — Prateek Balhara, model and winner of Gladrags Manhunt ‘09

Summer Skin Care

D

uring every seasonal change, proper skin care is essential to enhance beauty. In winter, the skin needs to be well moisturised and protected from the cold. During summer, the skin needs to be carefully protected from the sunrays and extreme heat. In India, summer can be divided into two sections (i) hot and dry (ii) humid and scorching. These changes cause skin problems like tanning, heat rash, sun burn, open pores, pigmentation and dark circles.

Aromatherapy is a very ancient therapy. It means using pure essential oils that come from plants,

The more the body exposed in summer, the higher the care required. However, aromatherapy, combined with the season’s fruits and vegetables, helps in solving various skin related problems spices, flowers, leaves, barks and herbs for treatment through the sense of smell.

How essential oils affect the skin

Essential oils are absorbed through the skin and penetrate into the deepest layers. These oils pass through the organs, glands and tissues of the body. They also regulate the blood and the lymph fluid, improving circulation and helping respiration of the skin. The antiseptic and anti bacterial properties of these oils help in healing skin inflammation. Essential oils are also helpful for treating burns and cuts. They not only reduce the possibility of infection but also stimulate new skin cells through their cycophylatic activity. Several

essential oils act as skin tonics and help muscles to maintain a healthy condition. The astringent action of these oils helps in binding and tightening the skin tissues and thus, arrests excessive oiliness of the skin. These oils also maintain the moisture level of the skin and act as a natural deodorant and skin tonic.

Summer Tips for a glowing face

Make your own moisturising packs and use them twice a week to combat the dry summer heat: Mash a ripe banana or a watermelon. Mix one teaspoon of milk powder, one fourth teaspoon of honey and two drops of orange essential oil. Clean the face and allow this mixture to remain on the face and neck for 20 minutes. Rinse off with cool water. This pack is especially good for dark skin that gets markedly grey or ashen due to the heat, over washing and parching wind. Try oatmeal and tomato juice pack to shrink large pores and remove dead skin. Mix oatmeal to a tablespoon of tomato juice to make a thin paste. Add one drop of peppermint essential oil to the mixture. Apply it on dampened skin while avoiding eyes and mouth. Leave it for five to ten minutes. Then wipe off with damp cotton or a sponge and rinse with cool water. Apply a protective barrier of vaseline with a few drops of lavender essential oil before swimming for long hours. This concoction protects the skin from the chlorine and preserves moisture in the skin. Lavender also prevents burning. Sunscreen can be used to protect the skin from the burning rays. Sunblock can also be used to block out the sun completely, as skin can burn within minutes if it is unprotected from the UV rays of the sun.

Sunscreens should always be used over moisturiser and under make-up, regardless of the skin type. Apply iced water with a few drops of lavender essential oil to the sunburnt skin every two to four hours. Cucumber juice is also very soothing. To remove the tanned dull skin, mix one tablespoon oatmeal powder with sour yoghurt to make a paste. Add the juice of cucumber or grapes with two drops of rose oil in it. Massage this pack on the tanned area; leave for half an hour; rinse off and then apply moisturiser. You can also use seasonal fruits as facial masks since they are economical and highly moisturising. Crush a fruit’s pulp in a blender. Apply as quickly as possible before vitamins lose their potency. Grapes are abundant in sugar, vitamins and mineral salts. Use this fruit on wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. It moisturises, detoxifies and nourishes the skin. Papaya is useful on blackheads and blotchy skin. Cucumber is good for cooling and improves a dull and greasy complexion. Mix the juice of one small cucumber with one teaspoon of

rose water to rejuvenate the skin. Apply a mixture of watermelon and a drop of jasmine oil on the face and neck to freshen up the skin. Add a drop of sandalwood oil in coconut water and rub it on the skin. This will not only lighten up the skin but will also help to get rid of heat rash. Drink a lot of water to replace the liquid lost through perspiration. It is also important to nourish the skin from within. Make refreshing eye pads from thick slices of cucumber on cotton pads soaked in chilled milk. Use chilled raw potato slices to relieve itchy and reddened eyes. Place them over eyelids and rest for ten minutes. Brighten the eyes by putting few drops of rose water before sleeping.

before the bath. Add a cup of buttermilk (lassi) and few drops of jasmine essential oil in bathing water to tighten the pores. Nourish and soothe the skin with this bathing formula. Next for best results, add equal quantities of almond oil, malt vinegar and two drops of lavender essential oil to another bucket of water an hour before the bath. Use a head to toe yoghurt mask to soothe the sunburns. Leave it for ten minutes then shower with cool water. This

neck and leave it for half an hour. Rinse off, pat dry and apply moisturiser. The oatmeal and yoghurt remove the dead surface cells and the lemon juice restores the acid balance and bleaches the skin. Follow it with an almond oil massage. Mix half-teaspoon salt with a tablespoon of milk of magnesia, available at the chemist. Massage into skin and then rinse off. Tackle spots and oiliness with this exfoliate creamy backwash. For dark elbows, mix one tablespoon of sugar with half lemon juice. Rub onto the elbows, leave for ten minutes and then wash off.

Foot bath

Put one drop of peppermint essential oil, one drop of lemongrass essential oil and one tablespoon of carrier oil in a water tub. Soak your feet in it for an energy boost. Follow these handy tips and you will find that even in the scorching summer, the skin will be beautiful, glowing and healthy all throughout.

gives fast relief. Rub ice cubes wrapped in a tissue on pulse points such as wrists and ankles. You will feel instant energy that will enhance your appearance. To avoid heat rash, remove your sweaty clothes and hit the shower. You can also relieve the itchiness of heat rash by applying a cooling cornstarch mixture. Add half cup cornstarch to one-pint of water and then add a few drops of sandalwood oil. To avoid prickly heat and for a soothing effect, dust the body twice a day liberally with equal quantities of boric powder, sandalwood powder and talcum powder. Make a good skin food for the neck with equal quantities of cold cream, almond oil and rose water. To massage the neck, put a little cream on the fingers of each hand and clasp the base of the neck with thumbs inwards and the fingers meeting from behind. Now gently massage from the bottom to upwards until you reach the ears. Rub the back of neck and hairline with rosewater. To remove dull skin, use cleansing and tightening masks. Mix one tablespoon dry oatmeal powder with yoghurt (dahi). Then add the juice of one lime. Massage this pack on the

Help For Damaged Hair

We all agree that healthy hair is synonymous to beauty. Yet, we do not pay sufficient attention to hair care and thereby tend to damage them...

amaged hair is usually brittle and tends to break off easily. It also acquires split ends. In fact, damaged hair is weak and can lead to hair loss. It is therefore important to avoid hair damage and properly nurse damaged hair back to health. We tend to forget that the hair is actually like a delicate fabric and should be treated as such. The most common causes of hair damage are hair styling techniques that employ chemical lotions, or direct application of heat as is done in colouring, dyeing, bleaching, straightening and waving. These procedures alter the structure of the hair, which tend to weaken.

Each hair is made up of concentric layers. The outermost layer, the cuticle plays an important protective role and also contributes to the shine of the hair. It is made up of tiny transparent scales, which overlap each other. The chemical lotions penetrate the outermost layer and enter within to alter the hair structure. The cuticle is stripped off in an uneven manner and the hair loses its shine, natural elasticity and resilience. It becomes weak, dull, dry and brittle. This can lead to hair breakage and even hair loss. In fact, chemical lotions disrupt the normal acid alkaline balance of the scalp and leave it prone to problems like dandruff.

Here are some home remedies to help damaged hair

Take two tablespoons of honey, one tablespoon of sesame seed (til) oil and one egg yolk. Mix together and apply on the scalp and hair. Apply on the ends too. Wear a plastic shower cap and leave it on for an hour before washing the hair. For extremely dry, rough and brittle hair, mix together one egg, two tablespoons of castor oil, the juice of a lemon and one teaspoon of pure glycerine. These ingredients should be well mixed. An egg beater can be used. Massage this mixture well into the scalp and apply on the hair too. Wash the hair after half an hour. Rinse well with water to remove all residues, so that they do not clog the pores. Both hot and cold infusions can be made from hibiscus flowers and leaves. Hibiscus flowers are called gurhal in Hindi and javakusuma in Sanskrit. For hot infusions, the flowers and leaves are added to boiling water and allowed to stand in it for 10 to 12 hours. The infusion (liquid) is strained and then used on the scalp. It can be used as a last rinse after washing the hair. For cold infusions, the flowers and leaves are allowed to stand overnight in cold water, in a ratio of one to six. The flowers are squeezed and the water is strained before use. Such infusions can be used to wash the hair and scalp, or applied on the scalp with cotton wool. The paste or juice of the flowers can also be applied on the hair.

Some amount of damage is also caused by excessive use of hair dryers, wire brushes and tying the hair tightly at the back. All this can cause substantial trauma to the hair, over a period of time. Other causes of hair damage are excessive exposure to the sun and the use of harsh shampoos. To restore the hair back to health, first of all discontinue the hair styling techniques that employ heat and chemical lotions, as discussed above. The damaged hair are in a fragile condition, and as such should be treated gently. Discontinue the use of brushes and use a wide toothed comb that has smooth edges. This is more so in the case of wet hair. The best way is to start combing from the ends and working upwards. Avoid pulling or stretching the hair. To some extent, the treatment of damaged hair is dependent on the type of hair. In case of excessive dryness, mix one part of castor oil with two parts of coconut oil. Heat and apply. Remember to apply on the ends too. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the hot towel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for five minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap three to four times. This helps the hair and scalp absorb the oil better. Avoid vigorous massage and rubbing when you apply oil. Massage the scalp gently, using only the finger tips in small circular movements. This helps to stimulate blood circulation to the follicles. Keep the oil applied overnight and wash hair, the next day. Use a mild herbal shampoo to wash the hair. Shampoos containing herbal extracts of amla, reetha, shikakai, brahmi, bhringara and bael help to improve the health and texture of the hair. Avoid very hot water and wash the hair with lukewarm or cool water. Do not dry the hair by rubbing with a towel. Instead, wrap the towel around the head and allow it to absorb the excess water. Comb out the tangles with a wide toothed comb, starting from the ends and working upwards. Allow the hair to dry naturally. Regular conditioning is extremely important. Hair conditioners and serums protect, soften and improve the look and texture of the hair. Write to shahnaz@modelsntrends.com for all your beauty queries. Contract marriage‌

Rocking kya?

lthough every marriage is a contract of two soulmates, yet the decision to pen it down is extremely personal and is influenced by the specific situation of two individuals. Contract marriage is a legal agreement between two beings. These people can be already married or are planning to marry. A pre-marriage contract is called the ‘prenuptial agreement’ and takes effect on the date of marriage. A marriage contract usually makes a statement about the purpose of the agreement along with a series of promises, which are to be followed by both parties. Often marriage contracts seem to be used for second marriages, rather than the first ones, especially when either party has children. It maybe because people are more realistic the second time around and also because they often have accumulated more wealth than they had the first time, so are more anxious to protect it. The advantage of an agreement is the clarity in case of an eventuality, as the rights and obligations of a couple, particularly concerning property and separation are all written down and the document is registered before the concerned legal authorities. In India, this concept is new and is merely a story liner for Bollywood movies. However, in Western and European countries, this practice is part of the both real and reel life. Some sensational contract marriages, which have been the media stealers, have of course been related to the Hollywood and sport icons.

Be it a love marriage or be it an arranged one, it is a personal choice and depends upon the circumstances. As the society and its connected values are undergoing transformation, so are the relationships and this has paved the way for contract marriage... 72

The marriage between Hollywood bigwigs Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise has always been interesting fodder for gossip magazines. However, the news that the three year wedding contract was up for renewal, left a lasting impression, which was much more than what their films ever experienced. Their contract marriage was up for renewal, but this time around, Katie demanded a bagful of moolah, which was much more than before. According to sources, Katie called in her lawyer father to help her fulfilling her extra demands. She wanted additional 500,000 US dollars for supporting Tom's chosen religion, ‘scientology’; an increase in her annual clothing allowance from 750,000 US dollars to two million US dollars and a role in the coming series of Mission Impossible. She had even received a 3 million dollars bonus from Tom, when she had their daughter Suri. Tom even increased the additional amount, as an incentive for Katie to get pregnant again. He is supposedly prepared to pay up to 5.5 million US dollars for her to be pregnant with a 2 million US dollars bonus, if she is expecting by 2011. And, believe it or not, Tom's ex-wife Nicole Kidman had a similar high worth contract also but in lieu of money, she wanted assured roles in films and other work opportunities. Another celebrity pair under a contract is pop sensation Madonna and her director husband Guy Ritchie. Madonna had imposed strict marriage rules on Guy to live by.

Page 73

In India, this concept is new and is merely a story liner for Bollywood movies. However, in Western and European countries, this practice is part of the both real and reel life. Some sensational contract marriages, which have been the media stealers, have of course been related to the Hollywood and sport icons.

The document detailed how many dates the couple should go on and how often they should have sex. It stated that Guy had to ‘work to enrich his wife’s emotional and spiritual wellbeing’ and ordered him to devote several hours a week for reading Kabbalah teachings to her. It even had instructions on what words Guy should use during quarrels, so as to resolve conflicts in a constructive manner. He was bound never to shout at his wife, but instead look her in the eye and say, “I understand that my actions have upset you, please work with me to resolve this.” The marriage rules said that both parties must devote time to their sexual expressiveness and not use sex as a stick to beat one another. Now only God knows how the hell they use sex as a stick to beat each other with! Tiger Woods’s fall from grace may have seemed at first a parable of celebrity hubris,

but it has quickly turned into an allegory of corporate omnipotence. One need only follow the money to find out that who dictates the disgraced golfer’s decisions. Woods and his betrayed spouse, Elin Nordegren, are reportedly replacing a prenuptial agreement signed in year 2004, which would give her 20 million US dollars after 10 years of marriage, with a contract that could net her 75 million US dollars, if she stays his wife for seven more years and keeps a vow of silence thereafter. To ordinary couples, such negotiations might seem to take the notion of a marriage contract all too literally. But this husband and wife share a billion-dollar interest in retaining his role as a symbol for Nike, Gillette, Pepsico, Tag Heuer, NetJets, TLC Vision, Electronic Arts, Accenture, AT&T, and Chevron. Behold the corporate sponsor as the ultimate marriage counselor. Therefore, if you are considering a marriage contract, discuss the terms of reference with your spouse or future spouse, and then discuss it with a lawyer. In case any party violates the agreement, the other party can stake a claim to one’s rights. The bonus is that a marriage contract helps both parties to respect each other’s rights and avoid any eventuality arising out of a dispute.

She is cool; she exudes charming innocence and is none other than the British actress Ferena Wazeir, born to Indian parents. She is a multi-talented damsel, who has already received accolades for her spellbinding beauty and eyes. Now, she is ready to sway the hearts across the country …

Your movie ‘Sadiyaan’ has just been released. How do you feel – nervous or happy? Both. I am nervous about the reactions of the audience towards my performance and the film. I am happy because at last my first film has been released in India.

Wazeir How has been your journey from theatre and modelling to films? It has definitely not been a cakewalk but has been quite a struggle. I did theatre when I first visited India. This experience is great for an actor’s soul but terribly hard on the pocket. Though I did few assignments in modelling but it did not interest me much. When I finally signed Bollywood, I had to wait for the release of my first film, before I could take on more projects. It has been a long wait. One needs a lot of patience to stick it out in Bollywood. In the initial stage, I lost some good projects because I was always abroad and did not take it seriously.

How did you prepare for the role in this movie? How is this role different from your role in Rang Rasiya? Well, I have a lead role in the movie Sadiyaan, whereas in Rang Rasiya, my role is less important. I am playing a young Punjabi Muslim girl in Sadiyaan. It is a commercial and a period film, so I had to act in a certain manner. I have put on weight for this role and got a chance to work with some great actors like Rekha, Hema Malini and Rishi Kapoor. They were really awesome to work with. How is Ferena in real life – romantic, naughty, extrovert, introvert or rationalist? All of these!

Had you always wanted to become a part of tinsel town or did you want to become something else? There are so many things I wanted to be. I wanted to be a teacher when I was a child. In school, it was the lawyer’s profession that appealed to me a lot. I wanted to be a broadcast journalist during my college days. However, I loved Bollywood movies as a kid and used to keep awake through nights with my dad watching these, deeply engrossed. I guess that somewhere this influenced me a lot to come to India to join this industry.

You are also working in a Hollywood project. What is the difference in the ways of working between Hollywood and Bollywood? There are a lot of differences and similarities between the two industries. Bollywood relies on the star system a lot whereas Hollywood does more work on character casting. Today, Bollywood is changing in this respect, which is a good thing. Actors in Bollywood do many more films, so they do not have the time to play around with their physique or looks, as compared to Hollywood actors, who perform in just one film every two to three years. Bollywood is more vulnerable to changing seasons, actors and technicians’ dates, which delay the schedules. So, which one will be your priority, Hollywood or Bollywood? It depends on many factors. The script, the cast, the crew and the money. What has been your experience with the industry and its people till date? My experience has been very varied. I have met all kinds of interesting people, good and bad. However, it is important to avoid the bad ones and surround yourself with the good ones. You have walked the ramp in fashion shows. How do you consider modelling as a profession? What sea changes do you observe in the modelling industry of late? I really admire models. They have so much patience. I think modelling is a great profession. I think models in India deserve to get paid more than they do. That is why it did not interest me too much due to lack of money in this profession, as compared to the west. In the west, for similar work, models get paid so much more than in India. I used to get a shock when some production houses gave me quotes for campaigns. Therefore, I decided not to work, rather than be so undervalued. What is love, romance and marriage for you? Do you believe in love at first sight or love after marriage? Love and romance means a lot to me. I am quite a romantic and would love it, to be in love. However, I will avoid it for a while. Marriage for me is in the heart. I do not need the piece of paper.

84

What kind of person would you like to marry and what about your work after marriage? If I have to marry, he would have to be a great guy to get me down the aisle. I would like to marry someone, who would be very intelligent, caring, kind and who would always encourage me in my dreams. I would also like to have the choice of working after marriage.

Controversies are a part and parcel of this profession. Do these bother you and your family? Yes, it does but that is something, which every actor has to learn to live with. Are you choosy about your roles or go for each and every role that is offered to you? Earlier, I have been very choosy but now I keep in mind not to be too choosy, as you never know which film will turn out to be a chartbuster. Some movies, which look great on the table, turn out to be something different on screen. Others, which do not read so well at the script level, carry on becoming great films. However, it is always interesting to watch the films you turned down, to see how the end product comes out to be. In order of your fondness, how would you rate these genres: comedy, action, suspense and melodrama? Comedy, melodrama, suspense and action. Tell us about your upcoming movies and roles? How do you see the year 2010 on the professional front? I would rather not divulge details till the projects start. I have become a little superstitious in this matter. I have been in the UK for the last seven months. Hopefully, some of the projects I am attached to will start soon and 2010 will be a fruitful year. Apart from modelling, theatre and movies, what else do you wish to do in your life? I want to travel and live in other countries and do lots of charity work for social causes.

A

fascinating smile works much more than a thousand words. A perfect glowing colour on the luscious lips not only flaunts a stylish and confident look but also expresses a forthright fashion statement. This is the magic of a carefully chosen lipstick.

The journey‌

The love for using lipstick as a fashion accessory has been carried through times immemorial since the Indus Valley civilisation, when women used to

adorn themselves with a crushed concoction having jewels too. In those days, applying henna leaves on lips was the most natural way of colouring. The desire for this shimmering look was also seen among Egyptians, who prepared lip colours using betel leaves, dye-producing plants and fish scales.

During the Islamic era, lipstick took its solid form and fashionable women spaced it in their fashion accessories stash. Queen Elizabeth and Second World War era movies popularised the use of lip colours to a great extent.

Choose the right one

Being the most delicate darling of your body, lips need more care and attention. A fine outline with a trendy colour reflects a chic look. The choice of lipstick is well dominated by the type of skin. A fair-skinned woman looks awesome with mild colours like light pink, purple, brown and bronze, whereas a dark-skinned woman looks gorgeous with wine and mauve shades. Warm peach and terracotta shades go well on an olive oil skin. However, neutral colours give a soft and elegant look to any skin colour or attire. Also, lighter coats of pink or red hue help to get rid of dull and bloodless look. For a more confident and bold look, the best way is to match lipstick and outfit of complementary hues. Use of lip colour largely depends on the mood and situation of the wearer. Your choice will not only enhance your look but will also highlight the personality. Use light shades with everyday wear to flatter your trendy outfit as well as your hair colour. On a special occasion, choose a bright colour lipstick for a classy look to gel well with your jewellery. If you have a fair skin and wish to have a heart-throbbing smile, choose a dark red lipstick. This will not only liven up your look but will also give your teeth a pearly expression. One perfect way to add glitter to the looks is to experiment with different hues. So get hold of an array of warm and cool hues into your make-up kit to be an emblem of elegance the entire day.

Follow these tips

“Keep your lips soft and kissable with lip gloss or flavoured chap sticks. For lipsticks, make sure to test the shade before use and top it with lip gloss to get the sexy pout. Rihanna’s fitness fret

Model and singer Rihanna’s fitness trainer has filed a lawsuit against her in Los Angeles for unpaid dues. Fitness expert Cindy Percival has alleged that the pop singer has not paid fully for her training. Cindy helped Rihanna to get a toned body at 1500 US dollars per day. The singer's trainer alleged in the court case that the star still owed her a sum of 26,144 US dollars. The amount also includes travel expenses, which the trainer claimed she spent while following the superstar around the world. Dear Rihanna, lose you can, be it weight or be it case.

Naomi does it again!

Controversial British model Naomi Campbell has again buzzed the headlines of tabloids after slapping her limousine driver. However, the supermodel was absolved from any investigation, as the chauffeur refused to register charges. According to the police, the alleged slap was not malicious and Campbell had also offered to co-operate voluntarily with police after the driver alleged that he was left with ‘bumps and bruises’ following a confrontation in midtown Manhattan. Luckily, after the chauffeur withdrew, the cops too have dropped the investigation. Wah! mulazim ho to aisa. 92

NRI actress Jiah Khan received accolades for her acting in Nishabd opposite Amitabh Bachchan and in Ghajini opposite Aamir Khan. Now she is back with Sajid Khan’s directorial movie Housefull, being filmed in London. Having been brought up there, Jiah helped the cast with her ‘gyaan’ about the city while filming. She would repeatedly go on raving about her London experience on the sets. However, Arjun Rampal irked by her never ending talks about London, tied a scarf around her mouth. Jiah was embarrassed and stunned while the entire crew burst out laughing. This incident culminated into a joke and every time anyone said anything about London, everyone would turn around to ask Jiah whether it was correct or not.

Kat is out of the bag

Hot damsel Katrina Kaif is really rocking the film industry nowadays as she has a long queue of big banners and established directors waiting to sign her up. Recently, the charming lady has signed a movie with the heart throb of the younger generation, Ranbir Kapoor. The wonderful chemistry of both stars was seen in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. So once again, Katrina is really excited to romance Ranbir, obviously in reel life yaar. This new movie will be directed by director Imtiaz Ali, where Katrina will perform the character of a Punjabi kudi . Katrina knows well that it will be an uphill task for her to relate with the character of a Punjabi girl, due to her accent. However, the way she is excited to pair opposite young Kapoor, it seems that the romancing days of Sallu and Akki bhai are now over. So let bygones’ be bygones’.

New lovebirds in tinsel town

Finally, actress Lara Dutta and tennis star Mahesh Bhupati were seen hand in hand at an awards function. The two have been denying their relationship for quite sometime but now with their individual single status regained (Lara parting ways with Dino Morea and Mahesh ending relationship with his wife), they are ready to kuchi- koo . The wagging tongues were stunned into silence and the hot couple was certainly the winner, as all were bowled over with the comfort level that these love birds shared with each other at the event. Surely, with the cat’s gone, the mice can play now.

Jolie, the jovial

Actress Angelina Jolie will again stun the newsmongers with the rumours of her split with hubby Brad Pitt. Author Jenny Paul has publicly revealed some secret romances of the star in her new book, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: The True Story. Jenny Paul has unearthed details of Jolie’s sexual liaisons around the time of her first meeting with Pitt and claimed that she was also in a relationship with ex-husband Jonny Lee Miller and actor Ralph Fiennes. The author claimed that Jolie slept with singer and musician Mick Jagger around the time she appeared in the 1997 Rolling Stones video. Paul also claimed that Pitt and Jolie planned to have 13 children. The number 13, lucky for whom! Jolie or Pitt.

Size-zero trouble

While Salman Khan has inspired an entire generation to work out for a six pack body, Kareena Kapoor seems to be following heed. Her fitness regime has not only wowed audiences but also inspired fans to go for similar regimes. Recently her diet consultant told media about the rave reviews that she received from her fans. However, for producer Boney Kapoor, Kareena’s size-zero is rather a nightmare as the actress has shed excess weight and now looks altogether different. Therefore, Boney Kapoor’s plan for shooting a promotional video for his film with Shahid and Kareena went off track. Adding to his woes, she has even refused to share the stage with her earlier lover Shahid Kapoor for the promotion of the film. She is ready to promote the film but sans Shahid. Well, size and status really matter.

Politics, an inner view

Director Prakash Jha has always voiced against the prevailing vices in the society. His movies pounce heavily on the vicious circles that debauch the moral values. This time, he has targeted the mucky side of Indian politics and the contemporary electoral policy. With a talented star cast, such as Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgan, Naseeruddin Shah, Arjun Rampal, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Manoj Bajpai, the drama is highly influenced by the epic story of the Indian mythology, the ‘Mahabharat’. Surely, this is another milestone for Prakash to prove his capabilities.

After challenging an evil dragon, rescuing a beautiful princess and saving his in-laws' kingdom, Shrek continues his tryst with the destiny and confronts new challenges. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, Gemma Arterton and Alfred Molina, the movie is based on a video game by the same name, which is set in the mystical lands of Persia. A rogue prince reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess and together they race against the dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger that can impart its possessor the power to rule the world. Musaa - The most wanted A stimulating story

This action emotion drama is written and directed by Himanshu Bhatt and highlights the burning problem of terrorism. Starring Jackie Shroff, Sameer Aftab, Sushant Singh, Yashpal Sharma and Akhilendra Mishra, this movie also focuses on the nexus of sting operations and its ill-effects on a victim’s life. Robin Hood

The return of a legend

Iron Man 2 Get ready for action

After the success of Iron Man, this sequel by Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios is once again directed by Jon Favreau. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson, this action thriller is set in the adventurous journey of character Tony Stark aka Iron Man, where he faces new threats and challenges in his quest to defy malevolence. Interestingly, director Jon Favreau has also played the role of Tony Stark's loyal friend and driver in this movie.

Hollywood veteran director Ridley Scott has a name to reckon with for his striking visual style, production designs, innovative and atmospheric lighting. Teaming up again with actor Russell Crowe, he is ready to woo the audience with this action, adventure tale of the legendary figure, Robin Hood. The movie is set in the late 12th century England and revolves around this legend’s uprising against injustice, in order to reinstate peace to his village. Cate Blanchett, William Hurt and Matthew Macfadyen are other prominent stars in the movie. Scott’s long time associate cinematographer John Mathieson has captured the era beautifully through his meticulous vision.

Red Alert - The War Within The most misunderstood war

Despite the lukewarm response to his recent releases, Sunil Shetty is still the apple of talented directors’ eye and a frontrunner in the star cast. This action drama explores the prevailing Naxal problem in the country. Directed by Anant Mahadevan and scripted by Aruna Raje, the film has already won the ‘Director's Vision Award’ at Stuttgart Film Festival, Germany and Shetty has won the ‘Best Actor Award’ at South Asia International Film Festival (SAIFF) in New York, this year. Sameera Reddy, Bhagyashree, Naseeruddin Shah, Vinod Khanna, Gulshan Grover and Aashish Vidyarthi are in the key roles.

Knock Out

The killer on a prowl

Despite his growing age, Sanjay Dutt is still a hot cake for filmmakers. In this action flick, director Mani Shankar has paired him opposite younger Kangna Ranaut. For a slimmer look, Dutt followed a special diet to loose weight rapidly. The 50-year-old is playing an assassin while Kangna is performing the role of a TV journalist. It seems that Kangna has always had a fascination for assassin heroes. She began her career with Gangster, where her assassin-hero was the 30-plus Shiney Ahuja. Now, she is once again attracted to the killer-hero. Irrfan Khan, Gulshan Grover and Rukhsar are the other stars in this movie.
