Bagful of

FASHION Fashion handbags have become ‘a must have’ in the wardrobe of every fashionable woman. The latest handbags are not only comfortable for carrying necessities such as mobile phones, cosmetics, money or credit cards but also enhance a woman’s looks and style...

A

Beautifully handcrafted jute, cotton, denim and silk handbags are most popular, especially amongst college going young girls. These can even be more eye catching than handbags with a branded logo. These are not only chic, stylish, well crafted but are also available at cost effective prices.

Jute and cotton handbags are indeed a beautiful addition in the fashion market. Similarly, a wide variety is also available in silk bags. In the market, these are available 30

fashion handbag complements the outfit and cherishes her persona. Women from different walks of life want handbags to match not just their outfits but also every occasion. Thus, they dare to experiment with new fabrics and styles. Nowadays, the handbags come in new fabrics, more colourful and highly decorated with sequins, beads, tassels and embroidery. However, the purpose is the same, to flaunt style and functionality.

in ethnic and contemporary styles. If you are looking for something authentic to go with bridal wear or party wear then you can go for bags, which are heavily embellished. You can also choose sequins, brocade, crystals, lace, jacquard and gota bedecked handbags.

Gold, silver or bronze clutches with some stones and crystals added to them are the best things to carry at a dance, wedding or a night party. These clutches gel well with all evening gowns and dresses. A black, purple and red clutch to match your evening attire is perfect for your wardrobe. If you want to add volume and attention to your look, then choose a bucket bag. A lot of young school or college students prefer to carry it because of its size and the fashion statement. It is a perfect choice for a day out. A matching bucket bag with a simple tee, jeans or skirt is enough to make you look glamorous for the day With these bags so much in fashion, you have to make sure about the right colours, embroidery, embellishments, size and materials, which should be in accordance with your taste and choice.

• Cotton, jute and silk bags are trendier than the luxury leather bags. They are more affordable, convenient and reach out to a wider target audience. • These bags are perfect for those trendy college goers and women, who prefer casual looks and want to experiment with their style without making it gaudy. Not too heavy on the pocket, these bags are forever in fashion. • The trend and colours this season are usually the warm tones like brown, beige and purple. You can also try bright or soft colours matching your dress. Sanjay Sahni, MD, Biglife Ritu Wears

Elegant and sophisticated fashion

Known for casual, cool, striking and multi-striped designs, Paul Smith has shaped an entire lifestyle based around the quintessential English culture that celebrates bespoke craftsmanship, classic tradition and mischievous humour…

an proposes, God disposes’, aptly describes the life of iconic fashion designer, Paul Smith. This British designer, who is known the world over for his stunning designs and collections, once had a great passion for cycling. He wanted to become a professional racing cyclist but as luck would have it, he met with a terrible accident at the age of 17. 34

n

Models Trends MARCH 2011

As a result, he was admitted to a hospital for six months. However, this was a turning point in his life. During this time, he made some new friends, who kindled in him a taste for fine arts. Aroused by this influence, the young Smith started dreaming of colourful ideas, new thoughts and innovative trends. The finesse acquired during his early days reflected in the collections designed by him later.

Page 34 - 37:Layout 1

Paul Smith is a chic brand with a touch of elegance. I like its menswear and fashion accessories, which are perfect for flaunting a suave style statement. I also love the stylish wallets and the exciting fragrance of its perfumes. The brand is really a must have for a fashion and class conscious urban male.

Anuj Sachdeva, model and actor

Thus, he kick started his journey into the glamour world of fashion. By introducing changes gradually in men fashion, Smith says that he made his customers confident about adding a patterned tie or a coloured sweater in their wardrobe. Richly patterned or embroidered waistcoats, coloured braces and decorative socks are also examples of Smith's subtle changes in basic menswear items. He has the ability to anticipate and even spark off trends, not only in fashion but also in English culture. He manages to transmit a genuine sense of humour and mischief, which are interwoven with his love for tradition and the classics. His global shops also reflect the character of Smith and his typically English designs that are augmented by

the unexpected. The Paul Smith shops house his fashion collections and an extensive selection of jewellery, books, art, antiques and an array of interesting and beautiful products.

In the 1990's, Smith diversified by launching a collection for women and children; a jeans collection; watches and even fragrances. In 2002, Paul collaborated with an Italian furniture company Cappellini, to create the Mondo collection of furniture, which was inspired by his observation and travelling. In 2003, he started designing upholstery textiles in partnership with the textile company Maharam. This collection was called ‘Bespoke’, which was inspired by classic pinstriped suiting.

His contribution and recognition for his work in fashion has won him numerous awards; placed him on the government's official list of ambassadors, and brought suitors like luxury conglomerates LVMH and Gucci Group to his doorstep. He received the coveted title of ‘Sir’ when he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in November 2000.

Courtesy: Paul Smith women’s collection ss’11

His girlfriend and present wife, Pauline Denyer encouraged him to try his luck in fashion designing and Smith started taking tailoring classes. At the age of 24, during 1970, with his entire savings, he opened a small Paul Smith boutique in Nottingham. During 1976, his first collection of men shirts and jackets under the label Paul Smith was introduced in Paris. These designs were a blend of traditional, classic and fashionable styles. His jackets were traditionally styled, but he lowered the armholes to make them easier to wear and subtly changed the shape of trousers. Using wool, tweed, and fine cotton, Smith's designs retained just the right element of English tailoring tradition with peculiarity. These appealed not only to conservatives but also to the young urban professionals of the 1980’s, for whom a Paul Smith suit became an important status symbol.

2/19/2011

Today there are 12 different collections; Paul Smith, Paul Smith Women, PS by Paul Smith, Paul Smith Jeans, Paul Smith London, R.Newbold (Japan only), Paul Smith Accessories, Paul Smith Shoes, Paul Smith Fragrances, Paul Smith Watches, Paul Smith Pens, Paul Smith furniture and other fashion accessories. Designed in Nottingham and London, the Paul Smith collections are primarily produced in England and Italy while the fabrics used are mainly of Italian, French and British origin. Paul Smith shops are established in London, Nottingham, Paris, Milan, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, the Philippines, Korea, Kuwait, U.A.E. and over two hundred outlets throughout Japan. In India, Paul Smith collections are available at DLF Emporio, New Delhi and UB City, Bangalore, where the complete men collections are available. Smith strikes a cord with people in showbiz having a creative bent, especially in the field of music, films and sports. He designs the official off-field

uniform of Manchester United and has also designed for the British football team. International celebrities, who have been spotted wearing his collection, include Jude Law, Tom Cruise, David Beckham to name some. India’s creative community and Bollywood are also now the sworn fans of Paul Smith collecions.

Smith continues to be an integral part of his company. Not only is he the chairman of the company but is also the designer and is continuously involved in every aspect of the business. As a result, Paul Smith Limited retains a personal touch with the customers, which is often lost in other big fashion houses. According to him, "A lot of designers or company bosses lose touch with the reality of their customers, or where they earn their wages from. They surround themselves with subservients; have ivory-tower offices, chauffeur-driven cars and eventually they just lose touch, especially in a fickle industry like fashion." No doubt, the house of Paul Smith will continue mesmerise the lovers of designer wear for times to come.

His collections of clothing and accessories for both men and women are usually identified by the presence of multi-striped signature on each item.

Wendell Rodricks One of the top fashion designers of India, Wendell Rodricks has been famously known for promoting Goan culture, mixing it with Indian heritage and converting it into sensual and glamorous fashion. His versatility and adroitness to set a new minimalism style, keeps him apart from others in the international fashion world. At a time when couture in India meant silk with embroidery, Wendell led the way with his rural cotton weaves, eco dyes and garment patterns favouring cut and colours. He has shown his artistry in Beijing, Dubai, New York, Paris and many countries worldwide, often representing the Government of India. His clothes are worn by actresses Ayesha Dharker, Rekha, Malaika Arora, Angelina Jolie, Meg Ryan, supermodel Helena Christensen and many other prominent personalities from all walks of life. This magician of bright colours and cool fabrics is truly a world class Indian designer and one of the hot favourites of Anup Bhandari, Chief Editor, this month.

Inspite of a successful career in hotel management, you decided to become a fashion designer. What was the reason behind this decision? I always wanted to be a fashion designer but there was no course in India that I could pursue at that time. Five star hotels were the next glamorous option. So I decided to choose this career. 46

What goes on in your mind when you create a collection? What kind of image do you have in mind about the wearer while designing a new collection? My collection is based on an emotion. When I create a new collection, I must feel my entire self, totally in tune with that emotion. Only then can I create a collection.

Inspiration, imagination and creativity is considered a necessity for the success of a collection. What are your sources of inspiration?

Very much. An inspiration can come from many sources, which can be a country, a painting or an object. It also can be inspired from an abstract source, such as music, yoga or air.

What was your inspiration behind your label?

I always want to make clothes, which people can make a part of their lives on a daily basis. I want to make women look taller and slimmer through my label.

You have revolutionised the concept of Indian heritage by mixing it with Goan culture and lifestyle. However, don’t you feel bored while using the same tradition again and again?

You have worked for various celebrities, whom do you consider as the best dressed man and woman?

I am a Goan and will always be the son of this soil. Is it boring for Indians to wear Indian clothes? In any case, my collections are varied and are inspired from Brazilian music to Tibetan monasteries. This keeps my creativity chic and fresh.

Wendell Rodricks’ design sensibility and creativity stands out from the rest and he can make any woman look like a goddess in his garments. I personally have a few of clothes of the designer and it certainly won’t be the last. Besides his great talent, he is a fabulous person also. I live in New York right now and the fashion here is amazing, but not a single designer makes clothes like him.

Nina Manuel, supermodel

There are too many names to mention. Frankly speaking, we have so many well dressed people in this country, so it is unwise to mention only some. However, I consider Malaika Arora Khan and gorgeous Rekha very stylish.

What is the role of style and sensuality in fashion? What are your favourite garments to present a unique style statement for men and women? The saree and lungi are eternal style statements. They are very Indian, comfortable, graceful, elegant, ancient yet modern.

You have represented India in many international fashion weeks. Do you think Indians are as fashion conscious as Western or European people? Indians are undoubtedly better dressed than Westerners, who wear stuffy suits, boring dresses and the same pants. Our clothes have a great variety,

Do you think that Indian fashion has achieved the status to make a mark on the global map?

I think that there will be Indian stores and designer labels in the West in the next twenty years. It is bound to happen. However, for all purposes, these are two different worlds.

Tell us about a fashion trend that you would like to change in menswear and in womenswear?

For men, I wish more men wear kurtas at work. For women, I wish that they stop carrying branded bags. It looks like a vulgar display of wealth.

Fashion is an industry that is full of copycats. How do you feel when What is your favourite people copy your style line, western wear or and designs? It is an honour if people copy my Indian wear and why? Indian wear is my favourite. However, I agree that the West makes good accessories, such as shoes, belts and bags. For the rest, I love Indian style.

nowadays. Is this a good trend for designers or is it creating a burden on their creativity to present something out-of-the-box every time? It is true that too many fashion weeks are happening these days than previously but the fact is that designers are making money, by getting paid for them. So more fashion weeks mean more exposure as well as more business.

What according to you is ‘Haute Couture’ as the definition is getting quite confusing nowadays? How do you see the future of couture fashion in India?

Haute Couture is French custom made clothing made in Paris. Everything else is simply designerwear and cannot be called couture by any standard. It is a misconception that bridalwear is India's representation of couture. There are many designers, who do detailed intricate work, which can be closer to couture but bridalwear is not couture. For me, someone like designer Rimzim Dadu is more couturier than many big names of the industry.

Is a celebrity necessary to boost a designer’s creativity?

Not at all. A designer who is good in creativity can sell without any such endorsement.

What are your plans about launching new stores on the national and international level?

Courtesy: WIFW SS ‘11

Courtesy: LFW

I do not intend to expand my own store but I am rather keen to stock at more stores.

Wendell is a mixture of talent and humbleness. He is a designer who courageously experiments with new fabrics, designs and styles. I really appreciate his designs, cuts and silhouettes. His play with the fabrics and blending of two different cultures is really unique. I have learnt a lot from him and consider him as a ‘magician’ with scissors as his magic wand. Rahul Mishra, fashion designer

What do you look for in a model for presenting your collection?

A model should have a feel for the clothes and show off the garments to others advantage and not her own.

Do you want to be a fashion designer all your life or something else is also in the pipeline? I like to write on fashion. I also hope to paint one day or to open a design school in Goa.

PRIYANKA KOTHARI Priyanka made her debut in Bollywood with the movie, Sarkar. From modelling to movies, Priyanka with her hot looks, bubbly traits and toned body has mesmerised the audience of all age groups. Besides Tollywood, she is now busy in Bollywood movies. Is there any specific reason behind your name change? Not really. Actually, I love both my names. I started my journey in this industry with my name as ‘Nisha’, so it is dear to me. My success, recognition, appreciation and love of my fans is associated with this name. Since my childhood, my family, relatives and friends know me as ‘Priyanka’, so my sentiments are associated with this name. However, I believe that only hard work and dedication pays rich dividends. What’s in a name?

You are more busy in South Indian movies. What about your Bollywood project?

Nowadays, I am busy with Bollywood movies. I am committed to some new projects here but it would be too early to disclose them. Soon my fans would see me in some challenging roles. I am sure that with the grace of God and the love of my fans, I will do justice to my new roles.

What do you think is the prime difference between the culture of Bollywood and South Indian movies?

The scale of professionalism, opportunities, respect, discipline and punctuality is higher in South Indian movies. However, hard work and dedication is a prerequisite for success anywhere.

Do you prefer to act in South Indian movies or in Bollywood movies and why? Hindi movies have a global appeal and a wide array of audience. However, these days South Indian movies are also doing well and the stars of this industry are famous around the globe. So an actor performing both in Tollywood and Bollywood should maintain a comfortable balance.

Beauty or brains. What is more important in boosting the career of an actress? Beauty fades away with the passage of time. However, it is the beauty that makes the first impact but after some time, the charm can only be maintained with brains. Beauty lures momentarily but with the help of intellect, you can keep it fresh and alive forever. However, an actress has to have many other qualities also. There is no shortcut to success.

What say

Page 52

How has been your experience with the industry and its people to date?

I catch people lying to me.

Avoid heavy makeup and keep your dress simple.

I spend my leisure time…

My willpower.

I feel bad when…

Watching movies, net surfing, reading and doing yoga.

My style mantra of fashion…

Be comfortable in whatever you wear.

My strongest point… My weakest point… I get angry easily.

Casting couch…

A worldwide phenomenon.

Live in relationships… It is cool.

My fitness mantra is… Extramarital affairs… Eat healthy and workout hard.

My fashion tips…

A matter of destiny.

I am still learning, even though my experience basket is full of sweet and sour experiences. The industry is full of good people and bad people like a life full of ups and downs. However, you have to learn how to deal with both kinds of people. It takes time to judge but one learns. Why only this industry, the whole world is full of such people, yet the earth is a good place to live on. We should cherish good happenings and learn from the bad ones.

What sea changes do you observe in today’s modelling and fashion industry?

ItIt is evolving and coming out as an enhanced platform, flourishing like never before; bolder and more creative. People of all ages are interested in becoming a part of these industries, which is really surprising. Parents today encourage their children to show their talent, irrespective of any province.

Do you think that today the percentage of youngsters is higher in the industry? Why? Of course, it is and I do not see anything wrong with this. I do not think that there is any harm if youngsters are attracted to the glamour and glitz. Our movies are a vital part of our everyday life. When we watch a movie, we feel a bond with the atmosphere, plot, characters, incidents, songs and so on. We forget our pains and fiascos at that moment and become a part of the activities happening on screen at that moment. Our films are mostly channelised to fascinate and encourage the younger generation, which has a higher proportion in the country’s population. So if they want to contribute in the expansion of the cinema through their talent, it is a healthy sign.

Our Bollywood movies revolve around love and romance. What is the value of love and romance in your life? Do you believe in love at first sight or love after marriage? Love and romance is the essence of life. It keeps us young forever. Love has many forms and being loved and cared for by a person is the best gift given by God. Why only our movies, the whole world revolves around this. However, the value of love and romance depends upon person to person. There are no set hard and fast rules. Love starts at first sight but it becomes stable and perpetuates after marriage with a suitable person.

Do you prefer your career over marriage? When would you think of getting married and to what kind of a person?

52

n

Models Trends MARCH 2011

It is too early to say anything about this. I have not thought about this aspect as I am concentrating on my career. Marriage is definitely not on the cards as I have to achieve many levels in the industry. My journey has just started

Page 50 - 53:Layout 1

towards my goal. It depends on the circumstances. If I meet a person, who could suit my expectations then I will think of it. However, I will continue my acting even after marriage. Marriage is not the end of one’s life, but the beginning of a new phase and responsibility.

Do you think that a model or actress has some responsibility towards the society?

Of course. When a person watches an actor or actress in a movie, he tries to emulate the gesture of that particular artist into his life. As I said, Bollywood has a deep influence on our routine life, so whatever famous models or actresses do in their life, people definitely follow them. Thus, we have to keep our actions in check, so as to avoid spreading any wrong message.

Which actress is your role model and why?

I do not follow the way or style of any actress, though I appreciate the acting skills of many. It would be difficult to name any one in particular. My role model is my mother. I love her very much and she is my closest and best friend.

Page 53

What does success mean to you? Where do you want to see yourself in the next 10 years? Success means to keep going on forever, without any hurdle. It means being busy with tons of work; getting recognition and fame for the hard work; being surrounded with friends and family and have blessings and love showered by well wishers. This is what I call success and want to see myself in this situation always. The rest is in the hand of the Almighty.

How was your experience shooting with Anup Bhandari, Chief Editor, ModelsnTrends magazine? He is really a sweetheart. On the day of the photo shoot, I was late on the sets but the warmth and welcome he showered on me was really surprising. He is so energetic, vibrant, full of energy and with a positive attitude that I never felt bored or tired during the shoot. I did not feel that I was working for the first time with him.

he audience does not know the actor personally but identifies him with the character that he portrays, rather than his real persona. For them, this character on the stage or screen is the real person. Living another life by portraying a character different than his own, is a work of art and a great challenge for any actor. The finesse in his portrayal sets him apart from the ordinary,

An actor portrays a character, different than his own while performing a role on the stage or screen. This is like living another life for a couple of hours.

leading to wide appreciation and acclaim. The pundits of the acting industry have debated since time immemorial, whether it was possible for one to live another life, even if for a short while? In fact, they argue that the character should not be imposed upon the actor and he should only enact it, as he so perceives and understands. This is known as ‘method acting’. Actors around the world have

Page 54 - 55:Layout 1

Page 55

Once superstar Amitabh Bachchan made a startling revelation, asserting that whenever he played a role, where his mother had died on stage, he felt that his own mother was no more. Amitabh has played this role many times over.

been applying this methodology to the characters portrayed by them. Though some directors insist on one or the other method, yet some actors choose to be on their own. However, playing a role in the theatre is not a function of methodology alone. Every good actor tries to imbibe the spirit of the character, internalises it and lives it off and on stage, so as to enthral the audience. Not only does his performance have to be convincing, but also it has to be in synchronicity with other roles. One weak actor can kill the total impact of his role and of other actors on stage. There is no scope for a solo excellence. It is like being a part of an orchestra where you are playing one instrument but if you do not gel with the rest, the symphony will become a cacophony. Thus, it becomes imperative for every actor to not only understand his own role but also of his fellow actors, so that the precision teamwork can pave the way for the success of the show.

Great actors have dwelt on their varied experiences while playing different and difficult roles. Once superstar Amitabh Bachchan made a startling revelation, asserting that whenever he played a role, where his mother had died on stage, he felt that his own mother was no more. Amitabh has played this role many times over. Imagine his plight that he has to undergo the catharsis of losing his mother, each time that he performs such a role. Often the male and female actors in the lead roles perform intense intimate scenes on screen to show that they are actually in love. Some of these pairs tend to end up as husband and wife in real life. Such situations arise only when they are playing infatuated lovers. Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri; Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh; Dharmendra and Hema Malini are some leading examples. However, the intimacy that develops between the lead pairs generally refrains the married star wife from playing similar roles with other actors after her marriage. Undoubtedly, there is no other profession than acting, which gives you so much thrill and satisfaction as playing another character on stage or screen. The standing ovation, which great actors receive after a great performance, is a reward in itself.

Role of a proper INTRODUCTION

W

There is an old saying that you never get a second chance to make a first impression, which includes making a proper introduction...

Lieut. Rita Gangwani (Retd.)

hen you lose your self-confidence, it is conveyed in your posture, facial expressions, intonation, attitude and demeanour. So even if people never tell you, which they won't, they still definitely take notice of your mistakes and lack of confidence. Every day we encounter people in a variety of business and social situations. The way we meet and greet them creates lasting impressions and paves the way for a productive encounter. Sweaty palms, not remembering a person's name, awkward silences and not knowing the proper way to make an introduction can be the most uneasy aspects of etiquette at any formal function. The most important point about an introduction is to make it correctly. Failing to do so causes embarrassment and discomfort. The second important point in an introduction is the order of the name. The name of the person being introduced should be

Models Trends MARCH 2011

mentioned last, and the person to whom the introduction is made should be mentioned first. The rules for who is introduced to whom depends on whether it is a business or a social introduction. 1. In business, introductions are based on power and hierarchy. Simply, persons of lesser authority are introduced to persons of greater authority. Gender plays no role in business etiquette; nor does it affect the order of introduction. Here are a few tips to follow: i. Introduction of people in business should be based on rank, not gender or age. ii. In business, the client, guest or visitor outranks the boss or co-worker and should be introduced first. iii. Women and men should stand when introduced. Always smile and maintain eye contact. iv. Shake a woman and man's hand in the same manner, straight up and down. Extend a good, firm handshake to exhibit respect, trust, and acceptance.

Page 56 - 57:Layout 1

2/19/2011

6:47 PM

Page 57

v. Keep the forms of address equal to avoid differential treatment or the appearance of preferential treatment. vi. Never ever use an honorific such as Ms., Mr., or Dr., to introduce yourself. vii. Demonstrate professionalism and credibility by clearly stating your full name. viii. Do not call a person by his or her first name when meeting or being introduced for the first time. Use their title and last name until invited to be on a first-name basis. 2. Social introduction is based on chivalry, so both formal and informal introductions are made according to age, then gender, and then social status. The man would be introduced to the woman in a social situation unless the man is obviously a great deal older, in which case one would defer to age over gender. 3. As you make the introduction, include a brief but meaningful piece of information about each of the people to explain their uniqueness or importance. When in doubt, be less personal rather than being more personal. 4. As you say each of the individuals' names, look at him or her. In this way, you focus attention on them and make them feel important, while appearing to be in control. Once a conversation has begun and everyone seems at ease, you may excuse yourself. 5. When introducing relatives to other people, always clarify their

relationship to you. Never refer to your own spouse as Mr. or Mrs. in a social introduction. Simply saying "Rajeev, my husband," or "Sonia, my wife" is sufficient. 6. When a couple is living together but not married, introduce both by their first and last names but do not comment on their living arrangements. 7. When introducing peers to one another, mention both the first and last names. It doesn't matter who is introduced to whom. Including a titbit of information that might start the conversational ball rolling is always a good idea. 8. At social events, it is not necessary to introduce a newcomer to everyone in the room. Introduce that person to the closest group by saying the newcomer's name first and then giving the names of the others. 9. At any function, the host should meet all the guests to make them feel as if their presence matters. At many business functions, guests may not know the host. It is a good idea to appoint several representatives of the office to stand by the door to act as greeters when guests arrive. The greeters introduce themselves and escort the guests to the host, make the introductions and then escort the guests to the bar or introduce them to others. 10. If no one introduces you, step in and introduce yourself. Feeling slighted because you were not introduced only puts you at a disadvantage. Introduce yourself by extending your hand, smiling and saying something like, "I am Aditya Gulati, Rajeev's partner." 11. The way you respond to someone else's introduction is just as important as making the introduction. In response to informal introductions, simply say "hello". Add a phrase like, "I have heard so much about you, Rajeev," only if it is true and if it is complimentary. Beware of phrases like ‘pleased to meet you’ because that may not be true after only a few minutes of conversation. 12. "How do you do?" followed by the person's name is the customary response to a formal introduction. Refrain from the use of first names until the person to whom you have been introduced has indicated that the familiarity is preferred. 13. When you are introduced to someone, say the person's name and then repeat it several times during the conversation. Not only do you project a genuine interest in someone by repeating their name, but the repetition is more likely to imprint the name on to your memory. If you are an introvert and find yourself constantly nervous about meeting new people, it is in your best interest to practice the proper way to make an introduction in the privacy of your own home. The more you do something, the easier it becomes. As far as those sweaty palms are concerned, try this tip of carrying a fresh napkin in your pocket when attending an event and before you shake someone's hand, you can discreetly wipe the moisture off your own hands.

Tips On E R A C R I HA

H

It won’t be an exaggeration to say that beautiful and healthy hair is like a shining crown on your head…

ow would you feel while looking at yourself in the mirror wearing a premium outfit and a proper makeup but with messy hair? Of course, not a perfect picture. The hair makes or breaks your appearance. A stitch in time saves nine. Thus, it is always better to timely initiate some necessary steps, so as to save your crowning glory.

A nutritious diet is not only vital for the whole body but also for the hair. The body’s nutrients are transferred to the living part of the hair, which is the root. Consequently stress, smoking, eating non-nutritious and junk food can result in hair dullness and hair loss. Proteins, such as dairy products, meat, fish, poultry, fresh fruits and vegetables are extremely beneficial for healthy hair and should form an integral part of the daily diet.

Page 65

Always pamper your hair by deep conditioning and overnight oil massage at the end of the week. In the long run, it will make the hair softer, shining and healthier. Whenever out in the sun, always protect your hair from the harsh sun rays, as the hair loses its normal moisture and becomes dry with the UV rays.

Often people brush their wet hair. This causes hair breakage. Opt for a wide-toothed comb instead of a brush. Wet hair should not be rubbed dry with a towel. It is better to just wrap your wet hair with the towel, to prevent hair breakage.

Dandruff is a common problem related to the hair, which is a result of hormonal imbalance, poor diet, stress and harsh hair care products. Dandruff also causes hair thinning. It is best to massage the scalp with olive oil, castor oil, almond oil, or coconut oil to remove the dandruff. Always comb your hair in the night before going to bed. This increases the flow of blood in the scalp.

Chemically rich products are harsh for the scalp and clog the pores on the head, which can result in hair thinning. It is better to try herbal shampoos and conditioners. The hair should be washed at least three times a week, using less quantity of the shampoo. Use your fingertips and not your nails while shampooing. Use butter milk (lassi) or yoghurt (dahi) to remove the dryness and to add shine to the hair.

LOOK GORGEOUS AT

A GALA NIGHT Shahnaz Husain

Looking beautiful at a party night is not only about a glowing makeup and lavish dresses. If you start taking care of your skin and hair in good time, it really pays rich dividends. Cleansing the skin is vital in order to get rid of the impurities, which are deposited on the skin...

N

ight time cleansing is a must, especially for city dwellers as the chemical air pollutants, dirt and grime in the air are major skin irritants. Do not forget to remove the makeup after a night party. Neglect of these aspects can cause dryness of the skin in winter, leading to rash and other eruptive conditions, like pimples and acne. 68

n

Models Trends MARCH 2011

Exfoliation is an important face treatment, as it improves the texture of the skin and also makes it glow. In the olden days, ubtan was made at home for skin care and consisted of wheat bran (choker), gram flour (besan), yoghurt or malai and a pinch of turmeric (haldi). All these simple kitchen ingredients were mixed together and applied on the face and body, before bathing and then washed off with water during the bath.

This removed the dead cells and made the skin soft. Add almond meal or dried orange and lemon peels to provide more nourishment to the skin. Today, ready-to-use scrubs are also available in the market. However, you can still try out this traditional method. For the daily care routine, cleanse the skin twice a day. Take half a cup of cold milk and add five drops of any vegetable oil, like til, olive or sunflower oil.

Page 68 - 69:Layout 1

2/23/2011

12:22 PM

Put this in a bottle and shake it well. Cleanse the skin with it, using cotton. Keep the left-over mixture in the refrigerator. Nourish the hair with oil treatment once or twice a week. Heat olive oil and apply on the scalp and hair. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the hot towel around the head like a turban. Keep it on for five minutes. Repeat this process three or four times. This helps the hair and scalp to absorb the oil better. The white of an egg is a good natural cleanser for oily hair and its protein content helps to add body to the hair. Apply egg white on the hair about half an hour before shampoo. To nourish dry hair, massage egg yolk or mayonnaise into the scalp. Leave it on for half an hour and then wash the hair. It helps to soften the hair and is very useful for hair that has suffered damage through colouring, straightening or perming.

Few tips before getting ready for a party…

• If you have been working hard just before the party night, a few ‘pick me up’ tips will help. Chipped nail varnish, or untidy hair can reduce the entire effect.

Page 69

• Give yourself a manicure and pedicure the day before the big night. In fact, after soaking the hands and feet in warm water, massage them with a rich cream to make them smooth and soft. A good ‘pick me up’ treatment for the hands is to rub them with sugar and lemon juice. Pay attention to details like waxing and threading too, at least a day in advance. • A proper face mask can leave your skin clean and glowing. Cleanse the skin, mix honey with egg white and apply it on the face. Wash off with water after 20 minutes. For dry skin, use half a teaspoon of honey, egg yolk or pure almond oil and one teaspoon dried milk powder. Mix into a paste and apply on the face. Leave it on for half an hour and rinse

off with water. After washing off the pack, give the skin a compress with cotton wool pads, soaked in rose water. • The rose water soaked cotton wool pads can be used as eye pads too. Lie down with the eye pads on. This is extremely relaxing and restores both the body and mind. It helps to remove fatigue and brighten the eyes. Used tea bags can also serve the same purpose. Soak them in a little warm water, squeeze out the water and apply on the eyes like eye pads. • What do you do if you suddenly get a pimple on the face? Just apply foundation over it. Wait for it to dry and then apply foundation on the entire face. Touch up the pimple again with foundation. Then apply powder to set the foundation. • To conceal pits left by acne scars, take a foundation which is a shade or two

lighter than the one you use on your entire face. Apply the light foundation into the pits, using a fine brush. A concealer can also be used. Then, apply the normal foundation on the rest of the face. • For nails, mix almond oil and honey in equal parts and massage into the nails and cuticles. Keep it on for 15 minutes and then wipe it off with a moist towel. Mix together three tablespoons of rose water with one tablespoon each of glycerine and lemon juice. Apply on hands and feet and leave it for half an hour. Wash off with plain water. • If your hair are looking dull, give it a quick conditioning treatment before shampoo. Mix one teaspoon each of vinegar and honey with one egg. Beat them together well. Massage the mixture into the scalp. Then wrap the hair in a hot towel for twenty minutes before washing the hair. Your hair will have more body and shine. • Give your hair a tea water and lemon rinse after shampoo to add shine. Boil used tea leaves in enough water. After boiling, you should have about four cups of tea water. Cool and strain it. Then add the juice of a lemon and use it as a last rinse after shampoo. CHARACTER CHANGE

Here the purpose of makeup is to create a much altered or completely different looking character. For example, presenting a haute couture, space alien or other historical character. However, character change need not be so extreme. In the entertainment industry, the looks are altered to suit a character role being portrayed by the actor. What would the theatre be without the skills of a good makeup artist?

moment must appear at their best. “Looking their best” can mean many things, depending upon the purpose, which they are being shot for. This objective requires them to look very attractive, intelligent, dignified, thoughtful, and a part of the character they are portraying. For all these traits, quality makeup is a must. However, many different things also assist in creating a photograph that brings out the desired results. The model should have oodles of oomph factor along with proper body language and other traits, such as proper state of mind, actions, physical attributes and well styled clothing. The major objectives for using makeup are appearance enhancement and character change.

APPEARANCE ENHANCEMENT

The goal is to enhance the models’ skin and features in order to make the model appear as attractive as possible. Makeup is used to correct certain shortcomings, such as skin imperfections, short eyelashes etc. and to alter the overall appearance of a person’s facial structure.

Photography is an art and a photographer is an artist, who defines one’s feelings and emotions in an impressive way. When one comes for a portfolio, he does not know exactly about his persona. So a good photographer along with a fine makeup artist boosts his confidence and helps him to bring out that X factor.

the portfolio shoot of models. However, during auditions, it is not uncommon for models to be expected to take care of their own makeup needs. Thus, a model with a good understanding of the application of makeup definitely has an edge over others, who do not possess this skill. With proper makeup, the portrayal of a subject will be far better than that of a person, who has not applied makeup at all.

The complexity of photography tends to capture not only the good attributes but also the flaws of the person being photographed. Sometimes, a photograph can even exaggerate the less attractive attributes. For example, one may notice that the camera adds weight onto a person; tends to make skin look rougher; makes blemishes stand out or causes features to be more defined than actually desired. Once proper makeup is done, it leads to greater confidence while posing in front of the camera. A skilled photographer, image stylist, hairdresser along with the makeup artist can do wonders for the appearance of a model.

PREPARING THE FACE

Wash, exfoliate the dry skin, tone and moisturise the face before applying makeup. Oil control is very important. Try to use oil free products.

CONCEALER

This should be two shades lighter than the skin to cover blemishes and dark spots. Apply it before the foundation.

FOUNDATION

Choose a thickly formulated foundation rather than a thin one so that all the blemishes are covered easily. Blend foundation from chin to neck, so that it mixes well with the skin tone.

POWDER

Use compact powder and re-apply between shots to get a matt finish look.

EYES

Highlight eyebrow bones using light shadow to create lively eyes. Avoid eye shadow that is too frosty or shimmery because it will appear shiny. Apply eyeliner with precision. Use waterproof mascara. Overall application needs to be more than normal makeup.

LIPS

Use lipstick and a lip liner of the same colour. The lip liner shade should be darker than the natural lip colour. Apply lip gloss for the shiny glossy look.

Perfumes are considered as a second skin in the fashion circuit. A suitable perfume even makes your presence felt at any occasion. The selection of a fragrance depends upon a person’s needs, lifestyle and personality. So, if you are confused about choosing a perfect scent for yourself, here is the solution ‌

78

n

Models Trends MARCH 2011

P

erfumes have been used by both sex, since ancient times, for the arousing fragrance and congenial attraction. A perfume also signifies the personality of a person, who wears it. If you are rich, modern or fashionable, the key is to choose the best fragrance that fits your lifestyle. Describing the fragrance, of your choice is not easy but here are some tips on how to select the best perfume according to your personality and lifestyle.

Page 78 - 79:Layout 1

2/19/2011

6:58 PM

Page 79

Test the scent of your perfume on your wrist, neck or behind your earlobes, but not on your clothes as it might damage them. Do not rub your wrists together as it will reduce the fragrance. Wait for twenty minutes to develop it on your skin before making a final decision.

The word ‘perfume’ is a combination of two Latin words per fumus, which means ‘through smoke’. Egyptians are known as the makers of perfumes but the Romans and the Arabs improved it subsequently. • A variety of perfumes are available that are suitable for different occasions. Keep in mind the occasion before selecting a perfume from your wardrobe.

For a confident gentleman, a woody fragrance mixed with a masculine fragrance would be the best. These fragrances usually contain vetiver(khus), patchouli, sandalwood and cedar.

• Fragrances composed of herbs such as oakmoss, coumarin, geranium and bergamot would be a good choice for a modern man. •

A man who

wants to dominate his presence and to be recognised as powerful; for him a tobacco fragrance is the best choice. This fragrance is a warm sensual blend of woods, flowers and balsam.

• A cocktail party, a meeting with people, a day

at the office or a corporate event; these occasions demand a little sophistication. So go with a subtle scent.

• Try a stronger fragrance at a wedding, a party

or on a night of clubbing. Choose the one, which will enhance your aura but not overpower it.

• If you are sensual, stylish and liberal then woody fragrances are meant for you.

• If you exude true machismo and are a self-made man, then a potent mix of berries, citrus, lavender and spices will augment your style.

Clothing made out of hemp or other natural fibres suit them the best. They love bright patterns in clothing of rich fabric. They love to experiment and the Sagittarian woman at the office likes to dress up in shades of brown, dark blue, red and emerald green. As they are usually very busy, they prefer a fuzzy sweater with a shirtdress or a pant suit that features many pockets so they have many places to keep their stuff. For casual wear, easy going archers prefer versatile cotton pieces in bright colours that are as sunny as their positive disposition. Sagittarius men do not like to follow fashion but try to create their own style, which sometimes does not work. They like to give a contemporary twist to traditional designs and this enables them to be adventurous and creative. The khaki coloured shirts, sweaters or pants in the cream colour range would look best on them.

CAPRICORN

They love to dress in lounging, relaxing clothes and prefer these to be well tailored. They do not allocate much time for improving their physical appearance. Females opt for perfectly organised

closets filled with classic items, patent leather purses, crisp white blouses, navy suits, black cocktail dresses and well fitting jeans. They like vegetable colours and hand block print designs, classical and sophisticated styles for romantic evenings. Casual jeans with cotton T-shirts or shirts are all time favourite of men. Sometimes, they may replace jeans with cotton pants. Colours preferred are rose, sky blue, navy blue, grey and caramel.

AQUARIUS

Aquarians like to dress unconventionally for that shock value. Women are attracted to hand knit sweaters, caps, crocheted ponchos and shawls. They love the feel and tight fit of lycra and futuristic polyester blends. Women love to wear long single colour dresses with sequin work for a stunning look. They prefer geometric and asymmetric cuts. They are fond of patterns, plaids and pinstripes as well as unusual fabrics such as herringbone, tweed, seersucker and poplin. They look stunning in colours like purple, gold, black, sky blue, ruby red, emerald green and wine.

PISCES

Clothes are the extension of their sensitive and compassionate soul. They are unaffected by the latest fashion trends. For them, clothes are in fact a social construct. Women look excellent in silk polyester blended jackets with classic cuts or kurtas and gowns in fluid shapes. Scarves and handbags give that desired finishing touch to their looks. They like velvet, silk and satin fabrics. For casual wear, they love blouses boasting of voluminous ruffles, tight fitting shirts with lace trim and sensuous cashmere sweaters. Pisceans are simple and their clothes reflect their personality. Turquoise, blue and green enhance their personality.

Do you think that modelling is child’s play? Do you have a mindset that anyone having merely handsome looks and a chiseled physique can become a model? Are you interested in modelling but looking for an institute or agency for guidance? Well, here are a few rules to follow…

odelling is a career that not only requires firm discipline but also a set of rules to be followed religiously. Just like any other profession, this too has its share of ups and downs. You need devotion, dedication, 92

n

Models Trends MARCH 2011

determination and professionalism to be successful. However, the term ‘rule’ is not to scare you but rather to help you in building a rock-solid foundation for a successful profession in modelling and beyond.

1. Get a good portfolio done

Page 92 - 94:Layout 1

2/23/2011

3:41 PM

Page 93

The foundation of this profession is in getting a proper portfolio, which is the gateway for establishing a successful career in the fashion world. Choose an established fashion photographer for a good quality portfolio. A good photographer can do wonders and will highlight the best in you. A well-organised quality portfolio helps a model to be short listed by future clients for meetings and auditions. It is an investment that will pay back rich dividends.

YOU MUST KNOW

Q How should I get my portfolio made? A Any good portfolio should be taken in at least five outfits out of which one should definitely be in a formal attire. The formal outfit can be a suit or sherwani etc. for a male and saree, lehenga or salwar etc. for a female. For males, the other four dresses may be either jeans, trousers, shorts, briefs or cargos in combination with any T shirt, casual and formal shirt, jacket etc. For females, the other dresses may be either mini, midi, skirts, jeans, pants, capris in combination with any tops, T-shirt, swimwear, bikini etc.

Q What type of photos shots should the photographer take?

A

Your photos should depict how you look naturally. Ideally, the following shots should be taken: (a) Face, (b) Mid shot, (c) Full length, (d) Sitting shot (complete body) and (e) Photographer’s option.

Q What should I take from the photographer as part of my portfolio?

A

(a) CD of the entire shoot (b) Contact sheets (8” x 12”) of the selected pictures ( c) Ten photographs (8” x 12”) of different views and (d) Comp Card (6” x 8”).

Q I don’t live in Delhi, which photographer should the portfolio shoot?

A

We are trying to negotiate special packages (as done in Delhi) with prominent photographers across India. However, in the meantime, if you have selected a particular good photographer in your area, then please give us his particulars (address, mobile number and email) so that we can discuss the modalities and work out a special package for you.

Q What are my chances of getting work assignments?

A Photographs of best entries as decided by our

eminent jury in each category (male/female) feature in the “TOP MODELS” and “MEGA MODELS” section of Models n Trends. This magazine is read across the world. Advertising agencies, fashion designers, fashion choreographers, theatre, film personalities and various professionals from the fashion and film industries locate new talent through this magazine. You can imagine the tremendous opportunity through this high profile fashion magazine, Models n Trends and the dynamic portal, www.modelsntrends.com

Q What about the wardrobe required for the shoot?

own outfits because these definitely fit better. Rarely is an outside wardrobe asked for. As such it is not included in the package. However, Models n Trends advise you to use your own outfits. If required our photographers will arrange for these outfits at subsidised cost.

Q Do I have to pay for the make up?

A Not at all, the makeup is included in the above package.

2.

Experience counts

4.

Develop a professional attitude

3. Go where the jobs are

As an aspiring model, focus on assignments most suited to your abilities and competence. This will give your profile both quality and content. Be persistent in approaching magazines which promote upcoming models. Appearing in the editorial of a magazine will set you apart from others and will give you recognition in the fashion world. At the initial stage, for a year or so, the prime concern for every model should be to complete as many assignments as possible, without bothering about the quantum of payment. Climb the ladder steadily, targeting towards better brands, which necessarily would mean better exposure, package, and of course a better experienced profile.

Modelling opportunities are found mostly in metros. However, majority of the work is in Delhi and Mumbai. Delhi is the hub of the fashion world and Mumbai of Bollywood. If you live elsewhere, then immediately move to either of these cities depending upon the type of work that you would like to do. However, as a starting point, Delhi is a better option. It would be nearly impossible to get selected for an assignment living in a far flung area. Preference is always given to the models, who are in the close vicinity of the working area, as it not only saves time but also the travel expenses. Also, try to network with people associated with this industry.

Just like the actors portray the character and not their real self, you too have to get into the skin of the character that you are portraying. You have to represent the looks of a person that the photographer, client and art director feel is necessary for their perception. For this purpose, you should be prepared to act in a particular manner, even if you feel it is not the ‘real you’. The real you should take a back seat and just follow the instructions given by the person in command. Smile, cooperation and sincerity can work wonders.

Once you are in the industry, you become a small business house with your own contacts that include photographers, fashion designers, stores and commercial advertising clients. A model has to spend a lot on his advertising and promotion. Unless you show people, who you are and what you can do, it will be difficult to get further opportunities. It means that you should be ready to pay for a good and exciting portfolio, business cards, advertising in agency’s head books, magazines, websites and a variety of other means to get noticed and move forward.

There is absolutely no substitute to hard work combined with discipline. Modelling takes a lot of stamina and patience, as the profession has stretched out working hours. A photo shoot can go on for as long as sixteen hours and at any time of the day or night. Just looking for a suitable job could keep you on your toes all day and at the end of the day, you still have to look fresh and charming. However, this endeavour is bound to pay rich dividends and take you to great heights.

No matter how successful and sought after you are, adhere to the basic etiquettes, such as politeness, humility, modesty, dignified behaviour, mutual respect, complete focus on work and work ethics.

pecial events require special attire. Thus, one of the fashion statements, which should form part of every woman’s wardrobe, is an evening dress. For a formal party, wedding ceremony or a red carpet event, these dresses can make you look gorgeous. The new spring summer 2011 evening dresses are varied in style. So a fashionable woman can choose a dress, which not only beautifies her persona but also helps her to feel comfy. This season, select evening dresses, which exude elegance and glamour in a simple or a sophisticated manner. The fabric as well as the details featured on these dresses make all the difference. So if you want to look trendy, then choose from these styles .

Long dresses or gowns, which feature different cuts, allow the dress to either move along with the body due to their body fitting cuts or to glide around the body due to the flared cuts. Long gowns suit better on tall frames. Therefore, taller women should not shy away from wearing gowns.

Evening dresses made of glossy fabrics shine well and create a luxurious look. These fabrics look best on slimmer bodies. However for pleasantly plum figures, go for non glossy fabrics.

Select vaporous georgette dresses, which will offer your body plenty of movement.

Short dresses, which reveal the legs and can feature different cuts such as right under or way above the knee cuts, are really fabulous. For a slightly heavier body, go for knee length dress to balance with the body frame.

For an elaborate wedding party, go glam with a tailored anarkali suit. This is perhaps a perfect example of vintage fashion with an Indian silhouette. However, you do not have to stick to the traditional style. There are other styles of anarkali, which feature layers of sheer fabric such as chiffon, net, stitched over a brocade or crepe anarkali kameez. Longer hemlines, high waist and pencil skirts will give a sexy hourglass figure.

You can also choose the dresses, which feature a high slit in the front or on the side of the dress to slightly reveal your legs while you are moving.

JUMPSUITS

Jumpsuits were featured on almost every runway during the spring 2011 shows. Usually, women dress in jumpsuits during the day. However this season, try one of these for evening celebrations. Boasting rich fabrics, new cuts and an array of colours, a jumpsuit is now available for every event.

JACKETS

When we think of evening wear, our minds generally portrays the images of luxurious gowns. However, try a jacket on a short dress to be experimental and different on any occasion. To look more edgy, try out a plain tailored jacket with power shoulder on corset and trouser, which looks amazing as an evening wear.

MAKEUP TRENDS

Try to choose an appropriate dress colour, which suits your skin tone for the summer season of 2011. Red and black are two great night colours, which will give your ensemble a little mysterious edge. These two colours, when mixed together in an outfit, bring out a very glamorous look to the wearer. For two colours toned outfits, choose either 25 per cent red and 75 per cent black or vice versa.

Changes in the makeup trends are directly proportional to the fashion trends, as makeup helps to complete the look of any outfit. So keeping up with the latest makeup trends is as important as keeping up with fashion. Choosing to be diverse with your makeup can help you looking trendy every time. Follow these tips and you can constantly surprise your friends with your new looks. Red, orange or hot pink are the lip colour shades, which can definitely enhance your sexiness. So if you are looking to attract attention, choose a matte version of any of these shades. For the remaining makeup, try

to be natural by creating a flawless look using foundation and emphasising your eyelashes with black coloured mascara. When it comes to the eyeliner, opt for a white eyeliner pencil during the day and a black eyeliner for an evening makeup. Adding focused attention to the eyes is a great option, especially during the evening if you have gorgeously shaped eyes. Add bold eye shadow colours such as orange, pink, green and blue. This will definitely help to enhance the eyes and will attract a generous amount of attention towards your face. Keep in mind that for this type of makeup you need flawless skin, so create it using concealer and foundation.

Superstitions in BOLLYWOOD

uncertain nuances, astrology and numerology are idolised to set the cash registers ringing at the ticket window rather than a well directed storyline or an exceptional performance. Our B-town celebs are largely bitten by this ‘bug of the unknown’ and leave no stone

unturned to experiment even with the spellings of their own names.

Let us look at the example of King Khan, who was so perturbed due to the declining graph of his popularity that he started writing his name from ‘Shahrukh Khan’ to ‘Shah Rukh Khan’.

Page 100 - 101:Layout 1

2/19/2011

Famous Bollywood actors mostly, do not use their original names. Yusuf Khan is known as Dilip Kumar, Balraj Dutt as Sunil Dutt, Jatin Khanna as Rajesh Khanna, Ravi Kapoor as Jitendra, Harihar Bhai as Sanjeev Kumar, Hari Krishna Goswami as Manoj Kumar and Rajiv Bhatia as Akshay Kumar.

Astrology is more important than adding or excluding any particular letter or number. These tactics are manipulated and might suit one person but might be inappropriate for another. On the other hand, a well calculated horoscope guides you throughout your life and you can avoid a haphazard future. So follow your stars rather than the spellings of your name. Ajai Bhambi, renowned astrologer

• Akshay Kumar first writes ‘Om’ on a blank paper before writing anything. • Neha Dhupia is superstitious about black cats and avoids crossing the road after seeing them. • Kunal Kapoor always leaves a bit of food on his plate after finishing his meal. • Shahid Kapur always wears the right shoe first before the left one. • Ekta Kapoor matches horoscopes of the lead pair before starting a new serial. • Rakesh Roshan added an 'h' to his son’s name before launching him and thus it became Hrithik from Rithik.

However, despite the name change, he is still yearning for a big hit at the box office. Following his footprints, his peers in the fray, Kareena Kapoor, Ritesh Deshmukh, Sunil Shetty, Vivek Oberoi have also revised the nomenclature as ‘Kariena Kapoor’, ‘Riteish Deshmukh’, ‘Suniel Shetty’ and ‘Viveik Anand Oberoi’, respectively. After the intervention of dad Randhir Kapoor, the gorgeous lady dropped the idea of adopting the juggled name. However, she did change her nick name ‘Bebo’ to Daboo in her latest flick Golmaal 3. Since her father’s nick name is Daboo, she insisted on being called by this name in the film for emotional reasons and not for the sake of numerology. Even talented actor Ajay Devgan too could not resist this temptation and dropped the letter 'A' from his last name. This decision was taken by him in consultation with an astrologer to avoid any erratic slide in his health and fame.

Not all celebs succumb to the impact of numerology or astrology. For some, the name change is due to other considerations. According to MTV VJ, model and actress Shenaz Treasurywala, she prefers to be known as Shenaz because she is not happy with her long name. She claims that she doesn't believe in astrology and wants to change her name just for the sake of convenience. Shenaz plays the lead role in the forthcoming movie Delly Belly by Aamir Khan Productions. She strongly believes that this role was offered to her because of her talent and not because of any positive vibes due to her name change. On the other hand, actress Diya Mirza claims that her name change from Dia to Diya happened by chance, when the passport issuing authorities spelt her name incorrectly. Newcomer Ranveer in the movie Band Baaja Baaraat is rather happy to have not changed his name. It is

learnt that the actor was earlier not happy with his name, since his name sounds similar to Ranbir Kapoor. Thus, he was planning to change it. However, now the actor is happy that he did not change his name in a hurry. Who knows, had he changed his name, he might not have made a mark in the industry and that too with his first film.

Not only stars, even producers and directors of Bollywood also believe that dropping or adding a certain letter in the title of their movies can do wonders at the box office. The obsession of Rakesh Roshan, Ekta Kapoor and Karan Johar for letter ‘K’ is well known, as they claim this fetish to be their lucky mascot. However, after the success of Dostana, Karan has decided not to stick with such kinds of superstitious beliefs. “I used to think that a specific word is lucky for me. However now, I feel that contemporary thinking is extremely important and that we should not restrict ourselves with superstitious beliefs. So, I have consciously decided not to let superstition rule my being,” said the director. Similarly, television soaps queen Ekta Kapoor has also decided to leave this ‘mascot’ after the success of movies Shootout At Lokhandwala and Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, produced by her. However Rakesh Roshan is still a diehard lover of the letter ‘K’ despite the failure of movie Kites that he had produced. This producer, director and writer is now busy in the sequel of Krrish.

So, name change or being a devotee of a particular letter is not a sure shot formula to win the rat race in Bollywood. These tactics might have worked wonderfully for some but at the end of the day, there is no short cut to success and our filmuwalas still have to learn this mantra.

I was sceptical in the beginning and disliked my old name 'Shobha'. On Mr. Sanjay Jumaani's advice, I added the extra 'a' to Shobhaa De. Since then, I am very comfortable. Shobhaa De, celebrity author and socialite

STRENGTHEN YOUR BOND IN BEDROOM WITH FENG SHUI

by Ankush Modawal, Feng Shui practitioner

LOVE FLOURISHES GRADUALLY AND SMALL THINGS PAVE THE WAY TO BIG THINGS IN OUR LIFE...

o you remember that first small step towards something, which significantly changed your life? The first phone call you made to your lover or the first time you met a significant person in your life? A spark in the air, an awesome chemistry and a feeling of being in love…? However, gradually, the fire of romance burns out, leaving only smoke. Feng Shui reveals those small things, the absence of which can fade the flower of love in your married life: 102

n

Models Trends MARCH 2011

• Avoid paintings or artworks of warfare, ferocious wild animals and negative emotions in your bedroom. I once did feng shui for a couple where the husband had kept a life sized statue of a roaring tiger in his bedroom. The wife felt ignored because of her husband’s overbearing nature and in turn, she had manifested a hobby of drawing paintings of a lonely woman crying alone. As soon as the tiger statue and those mourning paintings depicting negative emotions were removed, the couple soon rejuvenated their love life by leaving for a vacation in Paris for a month.

know but a mirror facing your bed in the bedroom is harmful for your love relationship.

Remove clutter or any souvenirs you have left of your past relationships, which did not work out. Either burn, donate or throw them away.

Refrain from converting your bedroom into an office. Keep the files, computer and anything related to work out of the bedroom.

• Sleeping on a simple four legged bed is highly recommended but due to the emergence of apartments, people try to save up on space by sleeping on bed boxes. The boxes of the bed are in turn used to store all the junk, which you cannot throw away nor would like to keep. Beddings and linens are fine, but old shoes, utensils and electronics are a strict no-no because they affect your aura in a detrimental way. • Nothing kills the mood for sex faster than the 9’o clock news or the late night reality shows being aired on T.V. Do yourself a favour and do not fill your subconscious mind with unnecessary emotions just before you spend some restful time with your partner. • Never keep a water feature in your bedroom. Some people like to keep a fish bowl or an aquarium in their bedroom, but the element of water really dampens your relationship.

Your bed in the bedroom should always be accessible from all the three sides while the head of the bed should be placed along a wall. You will be surprised to see the flow of love and romance in your married life. • In Feng Shui, a king sized bed equates to a king sized ego. This pampers the ego of the person sleeping on the bed, making him arrogant, conceited and over confident. Also, it is imperative that your bed should have one single double mattress rather than two single mattresses.

• It is said that when we sleep, our spirit leaves our body and goes into another dimension and state of consciousness. A healthy life can only be ensured if you are getting a good night’s sleep. However, if you have a mirror in the bedroom, which reflects your body while you snooze, the spirit is never able to leave the body as it gets scared of seeing itself in the mirror. How much of this theory is true or myth, I do not

• Never place idols of God in the bedroom. The bedroom is meant for rejuvenation, sex and relaxation but not for worship.

Having photos of family members, parents or children in your bedroom is not advisable. If you are single, you can hang a picture of what you want that your ideal partner should look like. If you are a couple, then try to add photos of the good times that you have spent together. This will strengthen your bond even more.
