Through the Eyes

his July, I was in Mumbai shooting for the covers of the forthcoming issues. It was fun and challenging to shoot with model and actress Shweta Bhardwaj. The concept this time was ‘born free’. The advantage of shooting with an actress of her stature, is that she understands the various moods that are required for the perfect execution of a particular shot. Shweta is moody but a thorough professional, and has a good eye for detail. While at the sets, we had a surprise visitor Chan Chan, her lovely Shih Tzu dog. This really energised our cover girl and the pet sure looks confident, while posing with us. I am sure that the dogs out yonder are turning green with envy. It was a wonderful experience shooting with Shweta, ace photographer Vishal Saxena and the entire team. However, due to rains we were constrained to shoot indoors. Though in the next cover, you will find that the rain Gods were very kind and we could mostly shoot outdoors with (V…. M…...). Try to work this one out. In the last two months, I was part of a jury for selecting models for India International Garment Fair and Silk Paradise Expo, the event being managed by ace choreographer Anup Banerjea. I was also invited as a jury member to choose the participants for the Mrs. India Worldwide ‘11 contest. It was interesting to know that most of these married ladies aspired to be in the glamour world since their childhood days. Deprived a chance by their parents, they stood there in this contest, encouraged by their husbands. ‘Born free’ after wedlock. This time around, the Synergy One Delhi Couture Week ‘11 was held at The Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi from July 22 to 25. It was definitely the right choice for such kind of a fashion extravaganza to be held there, as it presented the right feel to the opulence of the designers’ collections. In the French context, ‘haute couture’ stands for high fashion. ‘Haute’ stands for elegant and ‘couture’ means exclusively made-to-measure finely stitched garments involving high degree of workmanship, detailing and structuring for a particular individual. In India, the concept of ‘haute couture’ has existed centuries before its French counterparts. ashion knows no boundaries. An object of fashion is free from any dominance and is a permanent thing of joy. Similarly, beauty cannot be captivated and tends to energise everybody with its positivity. This was the concept for the cover with gorgeous model and actress Shweta Bhardwaj. Ace fashion photographer Vishal Saxena immaculately captured this stunning beauty and her sensuality in this ‘born free’ concept. Styling by Nikkiey Chawla and makeup, hair styling by Sangeeta have made her look even more passionate and luring. Cool funky apparels, accessories by Kazo and Max have added more fire to her tangy attitude. As a result, her looks have come out as ‘picture perfect’, befitting the ModelsnTrends cover girl. Valentino The maestro of gripping glamour

W

hen this legendary Italian couturier announced his retirement from the world of fashion and luxury, it was really the end of a glamorous era, which was full of elegant and beautifully crafted evening gowns. "I am especially grateful that I have been able to keep my own style over the decades, in spite of the many changes that have taken place in the world of fashion and in its business," said the designer on the occasion of his retirement.

For Valentino, life was as surprising as his elegant feminine fashion. A small shop owner’s son, he had a great zest for designing beautiful clothes, ever since his childhood. According to him, "As a young boy, my passion was to design, and I have been very lucky to have been able to do what I have loved all my life. There can be few greater gifts than that." After winning a scholarship at the age of 17 in the prestigious Chambre Syndicate couture school of Paris, he started working with couturier Jean Desses in the 1950’s, and later served as an assistant to the French fashion designer Guy Laroche.

Only a few designers in the history of fashion have that charismatic appeal to magnetise the gorgeous beauties of the world, and ace fashion designer Valentino Garavani is undoubtedly one of them. A name that remains copiously coveted amongst royalty, politicians, socialites and celebrities‌

Page 34 - 36_Layout 1 8/4/2011 6:06 PM Page 35

In 1959, he returned to Rome and opened a small studio. He showcased his first collection in 1960 but got recognition only with his 1962 collection, which he presented in Florence. This collection was picked by eminent buyers and Valentino never looked back, with business partner Giancarlo Giammetti at his side. He successfully combined the couture of Paris and Italy, using French embroidery along with Italian fabrics and workmanship. Later, he presented his famous ‘no colour’ collection in various shades of white, cream, chalk, sand, ecru, beige and won the ‘Nieman Marcus’ award for this collection. In 1967, he premiered the ‘Valentino White Collection’, which became famous for the ‘V’ logo that he had designed. In 1969, he opened his first prêt-a-porter outlet in Milan and later another one in Rome. In 1975, he showcased his first prêt-a-porter collection in Paris. In 1989, he had his first show of haute couture collection in Paris.

I love the designer for his classic and modern designs, be it fashion apparel or fashion accessories. His high quality craftsmanship makes him one of the most sought after designers in international fashion. I personally like his fashion accessories, which ooze young vibrancy.

Priyanka Kothari, actress

After receiving many accolades for his collections, he sold his fashion label in 1998, which is now owned by Permira private equity fund and its partners. In 2008, Valentino showcased his last haute couture show, and retired from the fashion world. During his career, Valentino only designed dresses and was not interested in accessories. He knew the allure of gowns, which had made women look gorgeous through centuries. He did not want to launch a perfume or a cheaper line of clothing or slouchy hobo bags with dangling gold V. "I love to design and create dresses. I always did this and I am not capable of doing anything else. I am a disaster in everything else," he once stated before announcing his retirement.

Classic and timeless, this is all I can say about Valentino’s designs. The designer has managed to conquer the whole fashion world through his mastery over the glamorous gowns, while maintaining a touch of class. I would definitely love to own his beautiful gowns to flaunt sophisticated fashion, for many years to come.

research and development of all of Valentino’s collections, prêt-à-porter, fashion accessories and perfumes today. For Valentino, ‘haute couture’ has always signified quality, precision in cuts and draping, attention to details and to the choice of accessories. It embodies the highest tradition of Italian creativity and craftsmanship.

Drawing upon incomparable values of the past, while possessing a unique understanding of the present is what allows Valentino clothes to be both classic and ultra modern at the same time. The Jackie frock coat, designed for the then ‘first lady’, is still a ‘piece de resistance’ in the collections, desired by women the world over. Similarly, accessories, which have been re-launched using original fabrics, prints and decorative elements of past couture, have had an extraordinary success. A sparkle of glamour is effortlessly brought in to every day life.

When did you decide to join the fashion industry and launch your own label? Have you ever thought about other options except designing? Fashion has always been my passion. Earlier, I used to design with my husband Sunil for our company called ‘Intraport India’. It was an export house where I was designing for H&M, Top Shops and many more international chains. In 1999, I started designing for our premium line Mynah’s Reynu Taandon. Hard work paid and this premium line became our mainline. If I was not a designer then

probably I would have been in some other creative line, like designing homes, as creativity is in my blood. If even this didn’t work out, I would have dedicated my life to a spiritual home to keep me grounded, happy and content in life.

What was your inspiration behind the label ‘Mynah’ and what is its forte? My husband’s label ‘Sandpiper’ inspired me to have another brand related to birds. I believe in ‘things forever’. Mynah bird has been flying high for years and will be there forever. My forte is thread work and its unique placement on garments. What goes on in your mind when you create a collection? What kind of image do you have in mind about the wearer while designing a new collection? First thing that strikes me while making any new collection is the colour. Then comes the season I am designing for and lastly comes the forecast for the next season as far as styling is concerned. I always imagine excitedly how glamorous a person would look while wearing my collection. No matter whether it is my bridal wear or resort wear collection, my dedication towards every collection is the same. How essential is inspiration, imagination and creativity for the success of a collection? What are your sources of inspiration? If you miss anyone of these three qualities in your collection, you cannot produce an excellent piece of work. I get inspired by travelling. I like to go and visit different countries, their tribal areas, and their crafts. My biggest inspiration comes from the demand of my clientele. Compliments from clientele and friends help to boost my morale. I thank God that I am surrounded with the best of people.

My Favourites Favourite colours: White and orange Reynu - the extrovert or the introvert: Extrovert Favourite past time: Music Favourite actor and actress:

In your creations, you frequently use the rich traditions of the country mingled with western trends. Don’t you feel bored while using the same fusion fashion repeatedly? Change is the essence of life. Every collection brings different embroideries, textures, and silhouettes, which is very exciting. Hence, I can never get bored. You are more inclined to design clothes only for women. Are you also planning to focus on menswear? No, I would rather pay more attention to what I am already doing. I am very much focused towards two lines; ‘couture’ and ‘resort’ wear. What are the essentials for presenting a unique style statement? Just by copying fashion trends, one may not look good in what one wears, if he lacks style. Style is something, which is very unique and very individualistic. To carry a stylish look, you need confidence and then only will you create a style statement.

What do you look for in a model for presenting your collection? I prefer a model who is very chic, edgy and straight top of the line. Tell us about a fashion trend you would like to change in menswear and in womenswear? In menswear, I would like to ban T-shirts which has lycra in it. It looks good only on the men with great physique and does not look good on an average or chubby body. They should rather opt for comfort fit shirts, which are neither too tight nor too loose. In women’s wear, I would like to ban puffy sleeves as a woman’s shoulder and biceps look masculine and broad in it.

our family garment export factory. Even at that age, she used to show me her sketches for approval. After completing her professional course, she joined me and worked under fashion label Mynah’s umbrella for three years. However, her sensitivity towards designing was totally different than mine. Whom do you consider as the best dressed man and woman amongst celebrities? Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh and ace fashion model Feroz Gujral. Is a celebrity necessary to boost up a designer’s creativity? No doubt, a celebrity helps to create media buzz. However, a collection should speak for itself, so I do not think having a celebrity is a necessity. What is your favourite line, western wear or Indian wear and why? I like both because in Indian wear, I love experimenting with lots of embroidery techniques; love to play with colours and love to make sexy cholis for the brides and her sisters. I have a lot of international clientele in western wear. I love to design dresses and kaftans for them with minimal embroidery, while keeping in mind their culture, style and colour, so that they will look fabulous. How do you feel when people mimic your style and designs? Do you think it is dangerous to your business? Of course it is disheartening when you see that your designs are copied by others, but at the same time, you can do nothing about it as it is a part of the game. I believe that people copy the best stuff. However, it hampers the business to some extent but at the end of the day, an original is always an original. Are more fashion weeks good for designers or a burden on their creativity to present something out-of-the-box every time? More fashion weeks bring more branding and business. Nobody from the design council puts pressure to participate every time and create a new collection. It is an individual’s choice to showcase the products in any particular fashion week. How do you see the future of couture fashion in India? Haute couture is something, which is exclusive and not a run of the mill. If it is a lehenga, it would be custom made for a client. Its cut would be sharp, chic and its embroidery would be exquisite and intricate. Couture fashion in India can never go wrong .We have been into couture from the last 100 years and will remain in it for several years to come.

You are fond of works of art and have masterpieces of well known painters in your home. How did this love for art grow in you? Do you paint also? My love for art grew in years. I love my home and love collecting different pieces for different corners. I like collecting brands of art, silver and many other accessories. However, I do not paint.

What changes do you observe while comparing Indian fashion and international fashion? Indian fashion is very classy, heavy embroideries and is embellished forever, whereas international work is more focused on silhouettes, less embroidery and colour forecast. From last few years, many Indian designers have been showcasing their creativity internationally and have got tremendous response from the buyers. So, I can surely say that our fashion has been creating ripples in the fashion world.

Shweta Bhardwaj Shweta easily catches the eyes of the beholders with her ravishing looks and toned body. Get ready to watch this sizzling beauty, as she is again ready to set the screen on fire. Here, relish the new looks of this gorgeous hottie and know more about her mindset… After a long gap, recently your movie Bin Bulaye Baraati has been released. Where were you busy in between your last movie and this one? I was really young when I did my first film Mission Istaanbul, so I decided to go back to my hometown Delhi to complete my studies. I was also in a contract with Suniel Shetty’s production house, which didn’t allow me to work elsewhere. From modelling to acting, how do you see your journey from one limelight to another? I started my career at a young age with small marketing jobs at a call centre. After this, 50

I started anchoring few shows and after that ramp shows and then films happened. I am a dancer and used to teach dancing at my dancing school in Delhi. One day somebody approached me for modelling and I got a chance to walk the ramp. I was noticed there and got offers for films.

Did modelling help you in your acting career? Of course, modelling helped me a lot. In my acting career, my past experience from schooling and the people I met throughout my life, really worked wonders. Meeting new people during modelling, their encouragement, interactions with them etc; everything supported me to enhance my vision. Modelling really helps to keep you comfortable in your dressing sense and in front of people. I met so many people, working, non-working, married, unmarried and I learnt from all of them. How has been your experience with your profession and the related people till date? I have had amazing impression and experience with everyone, who I have worked with. However, everyone has a similar impression about me that I talk too much (laughs loudly). What sea changes do you observe in today’s modelling and fashion industry? Modelling and fashion industries have achieved a higher level. Today, we have not only one beauty pageant to choose one of the most beautiful faces but there are so many contests and reality shows that are happening. I would rather say that too much is happening. Earlier, people used to wait for the Miss India pageant to happen, but now since there are so many contests happening, people are hardly interested. Since too much is happening, the novelty factor has gone down. Aspirants are getting more chances these days in the fashion industry. No doubt, the industry is blooming, but foreign models and actors are getting more work, thereby curbing the share of Indians in these industries. As a result, many people have to leave the industry. What is the role of publicity in a celebrity’s life? Everything is really important for a celebrity. When it comes to acting, an actor has to be organised. How vocal the actor is about his work and what he wants to do, a PR helps in presenting all these capabilities. People cannot look at you and imagine what kind of roles you are comfortable in doing. At that time, a PR helps you to in getting your potential established in the right circles. Controversies are a part and parcel of the glamour industry. How do you cope up with this? Thank God, so far there hasn’t been much controversy and I am waiting for something to hit me. I am not dating anyone famous or doing anything over the top to create a controversy, so I cannot really answer this well. When you are in this profession, normal things like walking on the street or eating out even become very difficult. A beautiful person can walk on the street and nobody will greet you, but when you become an actor, it becomes difficult. After a controversy, you come under people’s radar even more.

According to you, what are the pros and cons of modelling profession? Good thing about modelling is that you get a chance to start your career at an early age. It is not only about the face, but also about height and a great body, which at a younger age is more natural. In this profession, you get time to complete your studies as it is not a full time job, unlike acting, where you have to spend hours on a film set. Also you get a chance for travelling, meeting people and wearing lots of different clothes. It instils a lot of confidence in you, gives you good perks and money. Bad thing is that since you start at a very young age, you can get stuck with the wrong people. What upset me initially was that as a model you are just part of a herd. People often consider modelling and acting as ‘child’s play’. What is your stand on it? People who know about these professions definitely don’t think so. When you become a part of the industry, then people around you start knowing what a profession it is and what all you have to go

through. So it is definitely not a child’s play. My family and friends have now come to know what all I have to go through to perform in different climates, situations, conditions of health etc. We are busy shooting from early morning to midnight.

Do you think a parallel career option is necessary for models? I don’t think that it is necessary for a model to have a parallel career. It is an individual’s choice and if you think it will help you, then you can do it. If you are into any profession then give it the best but don’t try to do too many things. What advice or tips would you like to give to the young girls, who are interested in entering the modelling world? I will suggest that they should wear heels, walk and see if they are comfortable in them. Also if you have a great attitude, great height and great body then what are you waiting for? If you have an attitude but not a great body then hit the gym and get yourself ready. There is a thin line between right and wrong, so take your decisions and choose wisely. Which actress is your role model and why? I do not really have a role model but I am a fan of Shefali Shah and Hugh Jackman. If you ask about a role model then most of the people from my family and friends are my role models as they have helped me to perform better.

My fashion tips: Carry a tinge in your bag, which adds to your glow My strongest point: I am vocal. My weakest point: I am very vocal about what I like and do not like. Wardrobe-malfunction: It happens sometimes when you are extremely unprepared or extremely prepared. Casting couch: There is a couch everywhere in the world or any industry. Our Bollywood movies revolve around love and romance. What is the value of romance in your life? These days Bollywood movies also revolve around divorce and extra marital affair. Well, love and romance is the most beautiful thing and I am one person who eats, prays and loves romance. Love has no boundaries. I believe that love can happen at anytime and at any age. It is about realising where you are at a particular time in your life. Tell us about your upcoming movies and your roles. I have Raqt - Ek Rishta, a film about a young girl who takes responsibility to take care of a child at a very young age. She becomes an actress to take care of the child but her life becomes difficult while juggling between the two. My character ages from a young girl of 16 to a woman in mid 30. Then I have Abbas Mustan’s Players. Next is Hriday Shetty’s Challis Chaurasi, where I am the only female character in the film along side Naseeruddin Shah, Atul Kulkarni, Kay Kay Menon and Ravi Kishen. Another film is soon going to be launched, which is being directed by Chandrakant Singh whose recent release was Bin Bulaaye Barati. What is your stress buster and how do you relax? When I come back home, I light lots of candles and aroma incense around the house and then take a long shower. I also love spiritual music and like to listen to ‘OM’ as it rejuvenates me immediately. When I am really stressed then I call in few of my close friends and feed them, to keep my stress at bay. Apart from modelling and movies, what else do you wish to do in your life? In terms of career, nothing else is decided. I have lots of talents but I haven’t looked in any other direction. After this career, I want to be a wife and a mother. I accept the life as it comes. What is your advice to the models, who want to enter movies? I do not think modelling and acting are two different professions anymore. If you are a model, people will notice you and then it will lead you to acting. What you all need to learn is patience. When you are an actress you have to be fit and healthy as you are not doing the same thing for just one or two hours, but for many hours and that too in extreme conditions. What does success mean to you? Where do you want to see yourself in the next 10 years? In terms of career, I definitely see myself as knowing where I stand in the industry or what all I have done. All I wish and pray is that I should be content with what I have achieved. One cannot really predict about the future, so let it be. How was your experience shooting with Anup Bhandari, Chief Editor, ModelsnTrends magazine? It was really great working with him. He is thoroughly professional and made sure that I felt at ease at all times. The coordination was also done really well and his involvement in the shoot was great.

ACTING IS GOING BEYOND SELF Film acting is more than a portrayal of a strong personality. It is not merely about ego; love for performing; memorising lines and jumping before the camera...

A

ctors must create an intense relationship between their personality and the body of creative work that they have been given. To begin with, one needs to explore the needs and intentions of the character. Then comes the movement and the rhythm of the scene. Finally, the actor must analyse and memorise the lines. Film acting is different from theatre acting. Hence, actors trained for the stage do face difficulties, while shifting in front of the camera. It is widely believed that one can learn by looking oneself on camera, but bringing the camera in the classroom has its own problems. I feel that one can learn more by watching oneself and other actors, while rehearsing or on the stage, rather than seeing a film based on his own performance on a small video screen. Secondly, it is very important for the actor to believe that whatever he is doing is connected to the truth. Thus, you need to be connected to your personal truth (personal truth is a standard expression where one introspects inwards and reconciles to what he thinks and what he stands for). Thirdly, it is not always true that those who can perform well can teach well also. However, those who can perform,

they do have a responsibility to teach, but they must measure whatever they are teaching, on the basis of their own techniques. Fourthly, film students who aspire to be directors feel that why should they learn about acting. Little do they realise that playing another person’s life gives them a better understanding about that situation. Hence, when they will direct, they will be able to deal with their actors better. It is a popular myth that one needs a baritone voice like Amitabh Bachchan or Om Puri to be great actors. That is not correct, as actor Ashok Kumar, with a soft voice was also a roaring success. Now to begin, one should start with exercises on relaxation, concentration, and sense memory (sense memory is again a standard expression in acting, which is used for the quantum of retention in one’s memory about one’s performance). Next comes script and character development. These will help an aspiring actor in audition and casting. It is necessary for an actor to be conversant with the art of film making. Without that no actor is complete. Every actor needs to be an objective observer of his own work. An actor must ask himself, if he can be humane and retain moral integrity. He should portray humanity that gives meaning to his and others lives. It is a choice that every actor has to make.

POINT

ARMOUR CODE

For The Gen-X Models

A

lot has changed in this world since the turn of the century, equally so in India. Besides breakthroughs in science and technology; upheavals in finance and stocks, huge changes have also been noticed in our social beliefs. One such major change is that suddenly many so called traditional Indian families have removed the ‘taboo’ against modelling. Today thousands of boys and girls, even from smaller towns, are making a foray into the

glamorous world of modelling. The kids of today are smarter than their parents and are conscious about staying out of trouble in this profession. They are concerned about getting misled, exploited, cheated or inadvertently doing such things, which may hamper or finish their fledgling career. With years of experience in the glamour and fashion world, veteran Atul Kelkar has formulated this ‘Ten point armour code’ to shield and guide thee through the perils of the modelling world journey.

Thou shalt not become 2 Thou shalt not distribute desperate, and if you still thy portfolio pictures as if feel so, it must not show! they were free rations!

1

The amount of trouble you get into is directly proportional to your level of desperation. If you do not feel desperate about getting work and do not show desperation, you will not be a soft target and people will generally not try to exploit you. 56

3

Trying to use ‘influence’ or ‘contacts’ is thy curse and not thy blessing!

Always stay away from all those who promise ‘breaks’, due to their so called connections. They have their own dubious agenda, which you can definitely do without. You should rather have faith in your own abilities.

5

Thou shalt not fall prey to temptation of the easy pot of gold!

Model: Samiksha Courtesy: Sanjay Aggarwal Photography See more pics. on www.modelsntrends.com

Remember, any modelling offer that is too good to be true, is almost always a fraud. So stay away from those illogically tempting offers or investigate them well.

Thou shalt not leave your ‘common sense’ in the freezer when dealing with new people in this business!

4

Most imposters give out obvious signals of their dishonesty and you can spot the fakes by carefully reading between the lines. Use common sense and you will be able to see through the most fraudulent situations.

Thou shalt not go for client meetings at odd hours in odd places!

6

Unless you already know the agency, attend auditions or meetings only if they are held in offices during office hours, not in homes or hotels. If doctors and lawyers do not need to meet people at such places and timings, why should models have to?

7

Thou shalt not presume honesty while transacting business!

Never make any commitments, neither oral nor written, unless you have got the complete information about the project, and have had the time to think or consult with the seniors of the industry. Anyone, who coerces you into giving instant replies, surely does not have a clean agenda.

Thou shalt not forget that thy written word is very powerful; it can ‘give’ as well as ‘destroy’!

8

Never sign a blank paper. Take a copy of all the documents, which you sign. If there is a discrepancy in what is written and what is verbally agreed, you must get it corrected, before signing.

9

Thou shalt not get greedy for work and accept it in haste!

Never agree to report for any shoot, unless you have clearly fixed the remuneration and got satisfactory replies to all your queries. Never accept that your queries will be answered once you report for the shoot. Once you have finished shooting, you have played into their hands.

Every day, thou shalt pray that 10 thou shalt remain protected from the wrath of the monsters of the cyber world! Social networking sites are a good place to socialise in, not to get professional leads. In the cyber world, it is very easy to pretend to be someone you are not. Use your legs not only for posing but also to go and see offices for yourself and to check the credibility of people on internet.

Models Trends AUG - SEP 2011

T

he other day in a TV interview, I was giving tips to aspiring models, as how to make a career of modelling and its allied fields. While I was answering questions raised by the anchor, I was getting random queries from boys and girls from

all over the country. One lady asked a very relevant question, “Sir, I am from Patna and my height is 5’ 8”. I want to join modelling and later films. So what is the right way?” This inspired me to write this article. Let me mention that these days modelling (be it ramp, print, TV or motion pictures) is definitely the gateway to enter the world of stardom. It is a stepping stone to learn the art of selling your outer personality as a brand. With the easy access to television all over the country, new faces and personalities become the idols of the youth everyday. They feel inspired and charged up to be there and to be noticed by the world. In search of glamour, fame and money, the ‘I can do it’ bug has bitten almost every youth of the country, be it in metropolitan or in smaller cities. Everyone wants to be Shahrukh Khan, John Abraham, Deepika Padukone, Preity Zinta or

Page 58 - 59_Layout 1 8/4/2011 6:15 PM Page 59

Bipasha Basu. They have all come from middle class families and didn’t have any ‘Godfather’. However, still the question arises, ‘from where should I start?’ Youth living in bigger cities are definitely in a better position to ascertain and choose their starting point. However, it is a bit frustrating for boys and girls coming from smaller cities or towns. Generally, their exposure is limited to either television, or one-sided articles about the glossy or make-believe life stories of successful models or film stars. Many a times, the hidden facts about the pitfalls that the celebs have gone through, are overlooked. This time, I am giving you five tips to plan and prepare, assuming that you have already made up your mind to take up modelling as a career.

Model: Shum Courtesy: Praveen Bhat Photography See more pics. on www.modelsntrends.com

1. Progressive modelling and acting academies are generally based in Delhi and Mumbai. So, if you are planning to shift to any of these cities, do take your parents or a sensible friend with you, when you are planning to join the modelling or acting course. Remember to join a reputed modelling or acting school, to learn the finer points as this will help you in getting quality work later. Check out the credentials of the institute, its regular faculty members, the rate of success and the achievers produced by the institute. Check out the course content and duration. Generally, these courses last from two to four months.

2. Try to negotiate a deal with the institute where you can pay the fees in two to three instalments, so that in case you feel that the institute is not delivering as promised, then you can discontinue. 3. Remember, a genuine institute will never insist that you to get your portfolio made by them. They will rather suggest you names of good fashion photographers from whom you can get your portfolio made, once you have checked the quality of their work and charges. You must learn to emote and express in front of the camera, learn proper body posturing, before getting your portfolio shot. 4. Join a gym. If you are a boy then tone up your body. In fact, this applies to girls also. Do not become a body builder or a bag of bones. People like to see a supple body, which can carry every outfit gracefully. 5. Sleep for at least 8 to 10 hours every day. Eat well and do not become addicted to smoking or drinking. It will show on you and could lead to your downfall. Like elsewhere, the fashion and glamour industry too is not devoid of exploitation. However, negative forces can never deter the positive forces from succeeding. In my next article, I will bring forth another topic in this series of ‘mark your steps’. ‘The casting couch’ that exists but always denied. I will suggest ideas that may assist you in saying ‘No’. Till then, give your 100 percent efforts to get back 100 percent in the shape of rewards.

he mingling, the chatting and the social talk is inevitable and is truly an art of discussing matters of little consequence with strangers. This not only helps in creating a great first impression but also helps in building rapport. The definition of social talk includes both light conversation and idle chit-chat. While some people are born with this gift, others feel awkward, while conversing with strangers. People who realise and master this art understand that it is an opportunity to

enhance relationships and build rapport. Some topics for social talk are movies, weather, traffic, travel, books, food, sports, current events, art, hospitality, world news and hobby. Topics that should be avoided are personal health issues, wealth (yours or theirs), gossip, politics, religion, personal matters, inappropriate jokes, violence and crime. A good social conversation is dependent little on skill, more on planning and plenty of practice. The following points should be kept in mind...

People enjoy talking about themselves, so keep the spotlight on them. Ask about their interests and well being. Once you can get them talking about themselves, they will think that you are fascinating.

• Be a good listener. Careful listening helps you to be a better conversationalist because you are able to ask good questions and keep the conversation going.

• Body language speaks before you do. Avoid folding your arms across your chest so that you don’t unintentionally appear uninterested. Show an expressive face displaying interest without appearing inquisitive.

• Limit the word “I” to the minimum. Tell your story in a short version and ask the other person for their story. Show interest in what the person is saying by asking questions.

• When joining a group, listen intently to the conversation before contributing. Use non-verbal communication to gauge receptiveness of others and if you are not well-received, excuse yourself politely to join another group.

• Social talk should include all people, who are present in the group. The art is in learning to speak, so that everybody in the group can take part.

to start a fight over a topic. Be polite and listen to the views of others also.

• Use words that are appropriate for a decent conversation and avoid using slang.

• Do not get too personal or touch disturbing subjects while talking to others. • Learn when to exit a conversation. Your objective should be to make a good first impression and leave people wanting for more.

• For every group of lovely people that you meet at a party, there is bound to be one person who may spoil your mood. So excuse yourself and leave. • Be yourself as conversations are all about making a connection. • Do not panic when there is a lull in the conversation. If you sense that the other person is dying to get away, give him the opportunity to do so. Otherwise, take the conversation in a new direction Although the nature of these initial conversations appears less important on the surface, yet it reveals a great deal about the speaker, especially his personality. Feeling confident and at ease around strangers makes it far easier, not only to make friends but also to begin establishing significant relationships.

Healthy skin is

beautiful skin

It is the health of the skin, not the colour, which is one of the main foundations of beauty. You do not have to be born a beauty. You can acquire it, because beauty is the outcome of good internal health and regular external care...

nternal health and external care are two sides of the same coin. For external skin care, it is necessary to have an understanding of one’s own skin, in order to judge its requirements. In other words, you should have a fairly good idea of your skin type. A woman who has been on a daily skin care routine will find that the signs of ageing are delayed and the skin looks more youthful. Nowadays, one can choose products according to specific needs, as many kinds of ready-to-use products are available in the market. Regular care of the skin not only improves its look, but also makes you feel good. It gives a real boost to the self confidence. The daily care of the skin involves cleansing, exfoliation (use of scrubs), toning, moisturising,

nourishing and the use of masks. Cleansing helps to remove dirt, pollutants, stale sweat, oil, dead skin cells and makeup. If you use soap, wash the face only twice a day. Dry skin needs a cleansing cream or gel. Light cleansing milk and lotion are better for oily and combination skin. For pimple prone skin, use a medicated cleanser. Exfoliation is a method of deep pore cleansing and also helps to remove dead skin cells. This is done with facial scrubs. For dry skin, use it once a week and for oily skin without pimples, you can use it more often, even daily. Toning of the skin follows cleansing. Toning helps improve blood circulation to the skin surface, close the pores and refresh the skin. Rosewater is one of the best natural skin toners. After cleansing, use a

cotton wool pad, soaked in skin tonic or rose water, to wipe and pat the skin. One of the main aspects of skin care is sun protection. Most sunscreens have built-in moisturisers. Moisture is most important for the skin. Moisturisers are available in both liquid and cream forms. Oily skins may need a moisturiser only during the dry season. Nourishing is important for normal to dry skin. It helps to keep the skin lubricated and soft, so that it can hold moisture. After cleansing the skin at night, apply nourishing cream and massage it on the skin for 2 to 3 minutes. Wipe off with moist cotton wool. Masks play a vital role in skin care because they perform many functions. The regular use of masks help to keep the skin in good condition; adds a glow; tightens the skin; improves the cell renewal process and delays aging signs. Apply it on the face while avoiding the lips and area around the eyes. Wash it off when it dries, or follow specified directions. The concept of beauty has undergone a real change over the last few decades. The emphasis has shifted from

superficial treatments to a more positive approach that aims at protecting and preserving the natural beauty of the skin. More attention is being paid to ingredients in the cosmetics, since there is increased awareness about the potential dangers that the skin is exposed to. Over a period, it has been found that the answer lies in nature and natural beauty aids. Nature is a potent healer with great restorative powers. Skin care using natural ingredients, based on the tried and tested ayurvedic system has shown that there aren’t any harmful side effects and irritative reactions. Indeed, nature is not only an expert chemist, but also the best cosmetologist and has provided us innumerable ingredients that have versatile benefits in skin care. They not only help to preserve and protect skin beauty, but also have corrective actions that help in achieving the perfect balance, essential for healthy skin. A healthy skin means a skin that is clear, smooth and free of blemishes. Such a skin is not difficult to achieve. Thus, understand the individual needs of your skin and give it the care that it deserves.

Know your skin type

To know your skin type, when you wake up in the morning, before washing or cleansing, wipe your face with a tissue. If the tissue is clean, you have a normal to dry skin. If the tissue becomes stained or soiled with grease, you have a normal to oily skin. Use different tissues for different areas. Wipe the forehead, nose and chin with one tissue and use another one to wipe the cheeks. This will help you to know if you have a combination skin.

Try small western blouses with denims, cargos with tees; fitted kurtas with pyjamas and even the dhoti pants are few options to look stylish in casuals. Use colourful eye pencils, a basic lip gloss and kohl to add more shades in your fashion. Trendy bangles, finger rings, earrings and colourful cotton bags can also make you a fashion diva.

Nidhi Khurana, fashion designer

• For a wider choice, 'mix and match' your new apparels and accessories with the old ones in your wardrobe. You can use the new T-shirt with old jeans or new leggings with old kurti. Try long tops with dark leggings and ballerina slippers, Kolahpuri chappals or other flats. To add a fashion dash, wear a printed cotton scarf around your neck or your waist.

cotton, wool and linen never go out of style.

• Choose the colours wisely for your casual apparel. Do not go for a specific colour, rather select the colours, which match your skin tone. Neutral colours, such as white, beige, gray, navy and black are good choices for the pants, skirts and leggings because they almost match with every other colour. Fabrics are also an important element of your wardrobe. Natural fabrics, such as

• Choose your fashion accessories to match the clothes in your wardrobe. The trends in fashion jewellery, belts, bags and scarves changes frequently in fashion so do not invest in expensive ones. Chunky or costume jewellery is perfect for any casual wear. You can choose embellished cotton, jute or canvas bags and belts to gel well with your casual clothes.

• Keep your casuals simple as trendy patterns and specific colour combinations tend to become outdated very fast. If you want to maintain a stylish look with your casual clothes for a long time then go for simple designs or patterns. Choose polka dots, checks and floral designs for long lasting freshness.

• Forget fine gold or silver and add more fun and colour to your casual look. Add bold, bright, interesting designed necklaces, earrings and bracelets to your casual clothing. • Pastels and natural colours always look good. So fill your wardrobe with clothing in these colours. • Make the casual look of jeans and white shirt chic by using some bold costume jewellery like earring, necklace or bracelets. • Do not wear clothes with horizontal lines as they will make you look wider than you really are. Instead, wear clothes with vertical lines. • Wear colours that look good with your skin tone. For example, if you are very pale, it is probably best to stay away from white and light pink T-shirts, tops and kurtis. • Match soft girly clothes and accessories with edgier clothes and accessories. For example, try a light pink headband and pretty ballet flats with indigo jeans and sheer black leggings. • Use big frame sunglasses and bags with your casual clothes while going out.

We can always pull out old things from our wardrobe and couple it with our new clothes to create a new look. Take out old fitted short skirt and refit it to make a tube top or you can make a wrap around skirt as halter neck top. An old floral chunni can be used as a scarf, a kurta as a swimwear cover up and an old dupatta as a sarong. Use an old necklace as a motive or a broach, old scarves as hair bands or as a belt in jeans. I have made anarkali suits from my mothers’ old saris and as old crinkle skirts. They look ravishing and fresh.

Bollywood Konnection

Tusshar Kapoor Inspite of a legendary father of Indian cinema Jeetendra, and a successful TV serials producer Ekta, as his sister, success did not happen overnight for Tusshar. With his slow but steady progression, he made his ‘guy next door’ image popular amongst youngsters. Today, he is the one to reckon with, as his performance is outstanding. Meet this happy go lucky actor right here… Your film Shor In The City has done extremely well at the box office. However, unlike your characters in the movies like Golmaal 3 and Love U... Mr. Kalakaar, this character is more serious. How did you prepare yourself for this role? Although I have already performed serious characters in movies like Aggar and Shootout at Lokhandwala but yes, this time it was different. When I approach a role, I take my character very seriously and the way I dealt with this character was no different. For me, being an actor is the same, no matter which film I am doing. However, this role is unlike what I have done before. This is the first time ever that I have played an edgy character. Why have you been labelled as a comic hero? How do you feel about this tag? That is because I have done a lot of comedy and also all Golmaal series movies are a major hit. People always remember you by your last success. If you remember, I had begun my career as a college lover boy. However, it feels great that my character ‘Lucky’ has been so well received. I really 78

n

Models Trends AUG - SEP 2011

Page 78 - 80_Layout 1 8/4/2011 6:26 PM Page 79

enjoy comedy and I am very comfortable doing it. However, I believe that an actor should do a variety of roles and should not restrict himself.

How was the experience of doing this role for the first time? I was shocked when I heard that I had to play the role of a mute character. I was reluctant to do it. I was wondering how I would match up to actors like Ajay Devgan, Paresh Rawal and Arshad Warsi, that too without dialogues! However, Vikas Kadam who is from the Marathi theatre taught me how to modulate my voice to communicate. When he showed me the kind of effect that I could have with the right timing, I got the courage to attempt it. It was heartening to see that the character was so well-received. How has been your journey in this industry till date? What have you learnt in this industry? Superb, I must say. However, I will not say that I am satisfied, but I am happy with my career graph to a great extent. This is a cut throat industry and only some directors will really take interest in you. You have to take care of your own self and work hard to make your character come alive on screen; be focused on your work and be fit. You have to take very good care of your diet to show your fitness. I want to be ready to drop my shirt on screen, if required. The time is such that you might suddenly

be called to take an avatar, which is different from your previous image, and you cannot refuse the role because you have a paunch. You should be here with body and brain.

What kind of person are you? It has been learnt that you are an introvert and avoid parties and limelight? I really don’t know how this happened. Somehow an impression has been created that I am a shy, serious kind of a guy who was not interested in cinema. The fact remains that I always wanted to be an actor. In fact, I have even assisted David Dhawan in few of his directorial ventures. I have always been in love with films and am not an introvert at all. However, I am not a socialite or a Page 3 guy. Yes, I do attend parties and stuff but you won’t see me everywhere. Being visible is important in this profession but I believe in being strong as a person as that is what eventually comes across. How is it to be the son of a legendary actor and the brother of a ‘queen of Indian television’? Don’t you think that people have high expectations from you? Whatever I have achieved as an actor in this industry has been achieved by my own efforts, not because of my family’s support or background. People should judge me for who I am and not in comparison to what my father or sister has done. People don’t know the fact that my dad achieved his success in 35 years. I still have many years to go in my career, so the success ratio should not be compared. However, it has not affected me that much. My career is building slowly and steadily and I have tried to build my identity away from my family. How do you prepare yourself for a role, which is offered to you? I always have a general framework of the kind of character I am going to play. I have to go into the mind of the character and connect with it. Of course, I also use some of my own life experiences and imagine how this character would behave in those situations.

What is your dream role? If you ever got a chance to perform in a remake of your father’s film, which one will you select? Well, my dream role has yet to come, so don’t know when it will happen. If I could get such a chance then I will definitely choose my father’s film Farz because it was a super duper hit and was really the talk of the town those days. Do you take your dad or sister’s help in choosing your films? No, I always take my own decision. Dad’s time was different, so he might have a different take on things. His personality was also not like mine, so what might work for him might not necessarily click for me. My sister never interferes in my work. She has her own profession to focus on and we regard each others’ decisions. Are you also trying to feature in any international project like your peers? I would love to do so, but I am not aiming to get into international films only. I am also open to other options. Some people are dying to get out of Bollywood and move to the West but essentially I am a Bollywood actor and that's my base. How do you feel when you have high expectations from a film but it doesn’t do well at the box office? I usually move on because I know that the film is bad. Actually, what hurts more is when the film is good but it doesn't get promoted enough. I am lucky that during my worst phases, when my films were not doing well, I was still getting work. My career has always been steady. By God’s grace, things have gotten better now. Are you planning to do any serial or reality show for television? No. I may host a talk show or a game show but won’t act in serials or reality shows. 80

Are you ready to marry someone? What kind of image do you have of your woman? Not yet. Marriage is a very serious thing. I need to know the person very well. I am open to a serious relationship. Love is blind, so your love interest should be somebody completely different from the one that you fall in love head over heels with . She should be innocent, fun loving and emotional. More than anything, we should have similar interests. When you are not shooting for movies, what do you do for pastime? I love playing squash and exercising. I love trying different cuisines as I am a big foodie.

WATCH OUT for those

T

he way to a man's heart might be through his stomach but a woman’s palate appreciates and desires a well-dressed man. However, it is not only good dressing sense that can impress a woman, there are others things too, which a modern woman observes closely while meeting a man. Follow these suggestions to add that X-factor to your personality and see the fairer sex polarise towards you.

Shoes ‘Judge a man by his shoes’, is an age old saying, but still many women believe in this. A nice pair of leather shoes with clean looks, represents the confidence and class of a man. However, it does not mean that you have to buy expensive shoes to be the centre of attraction but keep them clean and polished, if you are going to attend a ceremony or a public event. Tattered and untidy shoes blink carelessness and misfortune. Remember fashion flows from head to toe. Thus, pay as much attention to your shoes as you do to your clothes.

Watches "Sophisticated watches are a subtle way of augmenting a great outfit. They demonstrate urbanity and portray their owner as a sophisticated person,” says model turned actor Sahil Shroff. No doubt, a luxury timepiece on the wrist of a man is as appealing as a diamond necklace in the neck of a woman. Those who aspire to own a premium timepiece are individuals, who understand and appreciate luxury, design and the best quality craftsmanship. Well, who can understand the significance of quality and comfort better than a suave woman? Thus, a high quality premium watch is a sure shot way of flaunting excellence with class and style. 82

Perfume is considered an essential part of the body accessories for men, as body odour is a big turn off. You need to be very careful, while making a choice. It should be based on the social stratum of the man and the occasion he is going for. Perfume depicts the personality of a man. Today buying a perfume is just like buying clothes for men, as it not only enhances the charm of a well dressed man but also attracts the opposite sex.

Vandy Mehra, director and designer, Study By Janak

Perfume According to a research at the Monell Chemical Senses Centre America, women in comparison to men have much sharper smelling powers and body odour in men is stronger and harder to cover up than in women. So next time, when you are going to meet a woman in your best suit, double check your body odour, to avoid any embarrassing situation. A pleasant fragrance of your perfume not only gets you compliments but also shows how well you maintain yourself on the personal hygiene front. And, of course, women do like to flock around a man emitting a nice fragrance.

Personal hygiene Pay proper attention to your personal hygiene, which includes your health also. Ensure that you are clean shaven; have a neat haircut; clean teeth without bad breath, clean hands and feet. Avoid dirty and long fingernails and toe nails. “ Personal hygiene is important for many reasons. Job demand, self confidence and partner’s expectation insist upon today’s men to take compulsory care. Handsome men have more opportunities. Therefore, not only celebrities, but also corporatists, industrialists, bankers, and builders also want to look their best. Brain and beauty combination has a surplus advantage over only a brainy man,” says Dr Ashwini Padmawar, dermatologist, cosmetologist and laser surgeon, Mumbai.

Fitness According to American health centre for behaviour, women get easily attracted to a healthy and muscular guy. Fit men draw more attention from women than do unfit men. Women want to be closer to such men, who they feel would offer them protection. A fit man enjoys better health and remains active with age. “After a point, men do not care too much about their health. You need endurance, patience and concentration for a perfect body. It is a punishing regimen but with a reward. There is an age old saying, ‘no pain, no gain’. And, if you are looking for a bigger gain, then you can think about the labour you have to do to achieve it,” says actor Rahul Dev. Thus, treat your body like a baby and avoid unhygienic habits which can further distort your body shape. Keep yourself healthy and fit by exercises and a balanced diet to boost your immune system. After all, we need a healthy body to flaunt all the fashionable things.

The quality of your shoes reveals how much you respect yourself. Of all the items in a man’s wardrobe, shoes are the most important element of style. Women check out your shoes before scanning the rest of your looks. Shoes make the man. A good pair of shoes completes a man’s image, not only giving him an identity, but also becoming an intrinsic part of his persona. The biggest fashion sin is not matching the shoes with your dress and other accessories. Wearing black shoes is a fashion fundamental and will serve you on many occasions, whether casual or formal.

ince long, dazzling diamond jewellery set in timeless designs has represented a symbol of class and luxury and has been passed through generations as a family heirloom. Many such exquisite pieces of diamond jewellery have adorned the attire of celebrities worldwide, thereby adding to the grandeur of their fashion exotica. However, today, diamond jewellery has gained wider acceptance, and has become an integral part of the fashionable urban woman’s attire. Here are some suggestions that will help you in making the right choice, while purchasing this important segment of your envious best.

Tips while buying diamond jewellery Take care of the various specifications of the diamonds, such as cuts, colour, shape, clarity, shine, polish etc., before buying a piece of diamond jewellery. Learning about all the C’s such as clarity, cost, cut, colour and carat is very crucial since these factors greatly affect the value of the diamond and hence the jewellery. Price of jewellery, quality of diamonds, upgrade policy, after sales service and modes of payment need to be carefully considered, while purchasing the right piece of jewellery.

Pricing of a good diamond The international price of diamonds varies according to size and specifications in terms of colour, clarity, cut, shape, etc. and can be determined by referring to the Rappaport chart, available on a weekly basis on the internet. However, a good quality one carat diamond can range between 3 to 5 lakhs. To authenticate your purchase, always insist on a certificate from a recognised testing facility.

Diamond jewellery for parties A suitable accessory is essential for an elegant dress, to enhance its effect. If a woman wears diamond jewellery to parties, it truly complements her outfit and makes her the centre of attraction. For a night party, choose small sized diamonds necklace with double or triple strands, chandelier earrings, a triple liner bracelet and a cocktail ring. A long necklace with triple strands set with pearls and diamonds can also be worn. For a day party, a pair of diamond studs in the ears, a solitaire ring, a single liner bracelet and a cluster ring will be the suitable choice, to make a fashion statement.

Taking care of diamond jewellery A diamond is truly special for its owner as it is not only expensive but is also associated with sentimental values. Here are few ways of taking care of your diamond jewellery: • Do not store your diamond jewellery with other jewellery pieces as it can be scratched. Wrap the jewellery individually in a soft tissue paper or use jewellery pouches. • Inspect your diamond jewellery regularly to make sure that its setting is secure. Promptly bring it to a professional jeweller, if you notice any signs of damage or loosening of the prongs. • Get the diamond jewellery examined by a professional jeweller, at least once a year to see if any repair is required. In any case, get the jewellery cleaned by these experts. • Handle your diamond cautiously with your fingers as the oil from your skin may alter the way the diamond looks.

• Clean your jewellery once or twice a week. A simple way to keep the diamond jewellery always beautiful is to soak it overnight in an ammonia based household cleaner, such as the window cleaner. In the morning, remove the jewellery from the cleaner and brush it with a soft, clean toothbrush to remove any leftover dirt.

Latest trends Fashion keeps changing with new designs and patterns. Trends in diamond jewellery come with panache. Choose black, grey and neutrals designs. Some diamond jewellery designs, which are in vogue, are antique, vintage, retro and new combinations. Dramatic, unique, unusual necklaces are also in demand. You can also wear ornamented bracelets. Eclectic natural look, crystal, rhinestone and Venetian art glass are the best way to flaunt your statement.

ndian brides portray Indian ethnicity with panache. This season is all about adding a little extra zing to the Indian attire. Many Indian brides are experimenting in subtle ways to ensure that they standout on the D-day. The definition of bridal colours has expanded from the traditional hues of pink and red, to include even colours like wine, gold and bottle green. Contrasting colour combinations, such as pista green with wine red, baby pink with oyster blue, pale yellow with sap green and creams with gold are being utilised to make a statement. The ombre effect is also being seen often in single colour garments. Indian women, from many sections of the society are thus becoming open to innovations, for their bridal ensembles. The inclination of the to-be-brides is often to go for stylised blouses in various cuts and designs, matched with lehenga-style or ready-to-wear sarees. Combinations of various fabrics and concepts merged together in the form of half-and-half sarees have also seen an upswing. Fabrics like net and georgette or net and shimmer are often being used together to give a fresh look. Stone and swarovski embellishments are being interspersed with intricate zari embroidery to make the saree look rich and vibrant.

Salwar suits The anarkali style continues to be the rage, while people experiment with the length of the suit and the pattern of the kali utilised in it. Preference is also being given to tanchoi and benarasi fabrics, which are enhanced by unique embellishments and stylised cuts.

Lehengas The kalidar and the fish cut lehengas continue to be the hot favourites. The trend to utilise kundan jadau work and crystal embellishments is also being seen. Wine and gold are very prominent colours in this year’s bridal section. Contrast colours have also been used liberally in the same garment. For example, a green lehenga matched with a wine dupatta. Fabrics are being characterised by words like ethereal, airy and sheer this summer season. Indian wear for women is being dominated by nets and chiffons. The feminine drape of the fabrics and the light weight is luring many women to make it an integral part of their wardrobe this season. In winters, an upswing in the usage of silks and handloom woven items is being predicted. This year, many old concepts are also making a comeback with some contemporary additional elements. The angrakha style choli-cut blouses, straight blouses with puffed sleeves and Victorian style fitted corset blouses are becoming very popular. For further stylisation, brides can easily accessorise the garments with brooches, chains, etc. These can be stitched at the back or on the sleeves to give a stylish look. An additional matching dupatta can also be used in conjunction with the bridal outfit to create a unique and stylish look.

Bridal makeup trends • Today’s bride wants to look comfortable and contemporary in her looks. Air brush based makeup with beautifully done eyes, be it smoky with nude or matt lipstick, are in • Latest colours and styles are either Victorian inspired gowns or lehengas with heavily panelled zardozi, or short choli embellished with Swarovski crystals. The base colour, which prominently brightens the bride’s skin tone, looks good with these styles. Reds, corals, burnt oranges, hot pinks and burgundy colours, which coordinate well with champagne, gold and silver colours, are in trend. A good style is to have a separate net dupatta to cover the head thereby giving the bride a delicate and comfortable look. • Latest trend for bridal hairstyles is braided front sections. Bouffant hairstyle with elegant floral accessories and side parted sweeps are also in fashion. • Nails should be painted in a base colour to highlight the henna application. Mona Lall, makeup expert

High waist knee length skirts and short pencil skirts definitely make a fashion statement this season. A knee length skirt cut to the right extent gives a lot of length to the body, whereas a pencil skirt helps in tapering the body of the unwanted edges, giving it a smooth look. Nowadays, since everyone is becoming health conscious, so these skirts have become idealistic for everywoman to wear.

Although buying a skirt is an easy task but do check that it should be carefully tailored and well fitted as bad tailoring can cause embarrassment. Thus, besides the design and style of the skirt, the fit of the garment is as important.

Marriage sutra

With cupid riding high, the youngsters of today favour ‘love marriage’ as they firmly believe that it is vital for both partners to know each other before tying the nuptial knot. However, does knowing each other really make a marriage successful?

L

ove is blind but marriage is an eye opener. This banter may not convey the seriousness of the marriage in a proper way but literally a love marriage is full of challenges. We have many examples where couples fall in love with each other but later find it difficult to keep their association intact for a long time. Actor Aamir Khan and wife Reena Dutta; Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh; Karishma Kapoor and Sanjay Kapur; Vikram Chatwal and Priya Chatwal, the list is long but one thing is common amongst these famous celebs. All of them fell in love first with each other and then contemplated their love’s destination, marriage. However, their amorous love was obliterated with the passage of time. Inspite of the perils of love marriage, the younger generation still prefers to tread this path, even if the parents think otherwise. Many questions arise then. Is it really true that arranged marriage is more successful than love marriage? Do parents of today agree with the choice of their offspring? According to Murugavel Janakiraman, founder and CEO, BharatMatrimony.com, "It is not 92

n

Models Trends AUG - SEP 2011

like 20 years ago where the parents chose the groom for the girl. Today, parents seem to accept that arranged marriage too might not work. Although getting engaged is still very much a family affair but parents are quite comfortable nowadays with their children choosing their own partner as long as they marry within the community." A gripping feeling of physical attraction and fondness is quite common in both types of marriages. In love marriage, the two have ample time to explore the positive and the negative sides of each other, which helps them to develop a good comfort level after marriage. On the other hand, it takes more time in arranged marriage to develop a level of comfort and understanding between the two. However, is this a deciding factor to make a marriage run smoothly? "Companionship emerged as the most crucial element for the success of a marriage in the survey organised in this connection. A majority of people, who took part in our survey, believed that marriage was a divine union that should not be

Page 92 - 93_Layout 1 8/4/2011 6:33 PM Page 93

broken. The survey indicates that Indians attach a lot of sacredness to their marriages while not being averse to shedding views that they consider outdated. The survey has also captured the shifts in thinking and trends with respect to matrimony on a large scale,” says Mr. Janakiraman. Exuding vibrancy is the Amitabh-Jaya marriage, which weathered many storms but remained intact, due to their unique bonding. Many experts consider cooperation as a significant factor in deciding the vulnerability of a marriage. In love marriage, expectations ride high and this is natural between two people, who have loved each other and this has culminated into marriage. Compromising in a love marriage could be a difficult proposition and could become a cause for altercation and a withering association. However, compromise and adjustment is the foundation of an arranged marriage, since the married couple does not have any preconceived notions or expectations from one another. Due to this factor, our society considers arranged marriage as longer lasting and better than love marriage. “In today’s fast paced life, lofty ambitions, higher expectations and mundane potpourri push us to the edge and we feel wrecked. This affects our married life, causing stress and irritation but such problems are common to all marriages. However, what makes the difference is our attitude. At that time, a touch of love and support from the spouse, helps us to revive.

A commitment for the well being of each other is necessary and both should be committed to this, without any ego,” says Dr. Avinash Awasthi, psychiatrist, B C J Hospital, Mumbai. Thus, devotion, adjustment and time is vital for making a relationship worthwhile. “Keep the communication channel open at all times. Talk and sort out your differences, which is imperative to the success of any marriage,” believes Dr. Awasthi. It is an age old Indian folklore that marriages are made in heaven but celebrated on earth. It extends across seven or more lives, during which the couple helps each other progress spiritually. Two souls come together and marry because their karmas are intertwined and they have to resolve many things together here on mother earth, in order to ensure their mutual salvation. The relationship between a couple is essentially a relationship of the souls. It is not necessary that their gender roles are fixed for ever. Sometimes they may switch roles and the husband may become the wife and the wife the husband. Sometimes they may also temporarily part ways and come together again after one or two lives in a grand reunion. Brian L. Weiss, American psychiatrist in his famous book ‘Many Lives, Many Masters’ also believes that “there is someone special for everyone. Often there are two or three or even four. They look different, but your heart knows them. He may not recognize you, even though you have finally met again; even though you know him. You can feel the bond. His fears, his intellect, his problems keep a veil over his heart's eyes. He does not let you help him sweep the veil aside. You mourn and grieve, and he moves on. When both recognize each other, no volcano could erupt with more passion but the energy released is tremendous.” So for a good successful marriage, feel a bond between the both souls and consider your partner as the companion that you have known in lifetimes before.

Are married people happier than unmarried people? 41.4 percent said yes during an online survey conducted by BharatMatrimony; while 34.5 percent replied in the negative and 24 per cent were not so sure. The most important reason for people to get into marriage was companionship. In fact an impressive 65.5 percent voted for companionship as the foremost reason for them to get into marriage. Other reasons like children, security, sexual attraction, society pressure and religious beliefs scored fairly low.

aring of the feet includes scrubbing, washing regularly, as well as wearing comfortable shoes, which allow the feet to breathe easily. Washing the feet in lukewarm soap water on a daily basis, followed by rinsing in cold water, drying with a towel and then applying foot cream to soften the rough patches. Foot skin care is essential, to be comfortable and active throughout one’s life. Otherwise simple activities like

It is believed that the feet of a person can tell a lot about the personal cleanliness and hygiene. Hence, the health of one’s feet plays a significant role in one’s overall personality… walking or running can also become painful. Whenever your feet get wet, make sure to dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes. A highly effective method of foot care is to stimulate the nerve endings in the feet by rolling them on marbles in the foot bath. You can also try to pick up the marbles with toes, then contract and flex the feet before letting go of the marbles. This allows the muscles and arches of the feet to stretch.

Page 94 - 95_Layout 1 8/4/2011 6:34 PM Page 95

Another effective way is to keep calluses under control, by using an abrasive foot scrub or a pumice stone to remove rough and dead skin. If this skin is not removed regularly then it tends to become hard and thick, which may result in cracked skin. It also increases the risk of infection, which would make it difficult for the person to walk. An invigorating scrub can be used on alternate days. It cleanses and exfoliates dead skin to smoothen the rough edges of dry and tired feet. Massage and gentle scrubbing on rough skin areas make the feet soft and smooth. Sometimes, it is also advisable to get a foot massage with a good moisturising foot balm. This massage can be made even more effective by adding some peppermint essential oil to the lotion. One should use a moisturiser on one’s feet everyday as part of the foot skin care routine as the skin on the soles of the feet do not have any oil glands to keep them soft. Apply foot balm on your feet before going to bed and then put on a pair of socks. Cooling peppermint scented foot care products are available in the market, to energise and invigorate the feet, leaving them soft, smooth and comfortable all day.

causes them to lengthen and to expand. The best time to buy shoes is later in the day, when the feet are a bit swollen. The shoes that are comfortable at that time will surely be comfortable throughout the day. The UV rays of the sun not only harm the skin but the feet also. Therefore, when you go out in the sun wearing sandals, make sure to apply a sunscreen SPF – 30 on your feet, just like the rest of your exposed body parts. Before going to bed, wash the feet thoroughly, dry them with a towel and apply foot balm generously, especially at the heels. However, avoid the area between the toes while applying moisturiser or cream on the feet. Always take good care of this essential part of your body, like you do your face and hands. Apply a refreshing and cooling spray gel regularly. This softens the skin; energises the feet and legs; minimises the feet odour causing bacteria.

Shoes play a vital role in keeping the feet healthy. While purchasing shoes, first measure the feet correctly, while standing. The shape of the feet changes according to the pregnancy, daily pressures, as well as the age, which

veryone is fashion conscious and would like to flaunt their own style statement. However, to do so, one requires perfect fitting clothes. ModelsnTrends highlights some handy tips for the fashion loving men to select clothes that match their physique.

If you are short, then… • Wear the trousers one and a half centimetres short from the bottom of the shoe heel. • Never fold your trousers at the bottom. • Wear longer sleeves and trousers to add an extra inch.

If you are tall, then… • Avoid wearing the same colour from head to toe. • Do not wear pinstripe suits, vertical patterns, jackets that end at the waist or very thin ties. • Wear smart fitting suits, jackets and double-breasted suits. Mid width lapels add power to stance and volume to chest, hence not making you look lanky. • Avoid trousers with high waist.

• Always wear vertical patterns, stripes, corduroys, straight leg trousers; single-breasted jackets and narrow ties.

Page 96 - 97_Layout 1 8/4/2011 6:35 PM Page 97

If you are bulky, then… • Avoid jackets and shirts with extra padding in form of quilting or piled fabrics. • Avoid wearing ties with loud colours. • Always buy shirts of the exact size, which could be slightly bigger but never smaller. • Do wear V neck T-shirts; shirts with a vertical pattern; shirts with medium collar width and ties in a single discreet colour. • Wear shirts in classic patterns in medium weight fabrics and in dark colours. • Wear smart fit trousers, which are neither slim or not too loose.

If you are lean, then… • You can carry everything which the others dread. Try pleated trousers, cargo styled trousers and shorts. • You can wear double patch pocket shirts with sleeve roll epaulette, which can add a bit of muscle on you. Horizontal stripe sweaters and polo necks are another suitable option. • Avoid V neck T shirts, slim collar shirts and excessively narrow ties. • Avoid vertical stripes, pinstripe suits, shiny fabrics or very tight fitting shirts that hug the shoulders tightly. • Wear quilted zip jackets and heavy fabric waistcoats over shirts.

• Wear check suits and double-breasted jackets.

If you have a large stomach, then… • Suits are the best option for you, as they visually even the bulge. • Avoid light colours or excessively shiny fabrics. Single fabric suit is always better than a jacket and contrasting trousers. • Choose the shirt and trouser in two tone dark combinations. Wear classic fit shirts and medium width ties that extend till your belt buckle. • Avoid wearing trousers over your stomach. Unlike popular perception, low waists are better suited for you. However, if you are scared of wearing low waist trousers then a good option is to wear these just below the waist.

Always wear the clothes that suit your body. It is not necessary that what others wear will also look good on you. Many men, particularly those who are stubborn or who are thin believe that they look good when they wear a baggy or a loose fitting outfit. This is fashionably incorrect. Always wear clothes that gel well with your body colour. A fine suit is a must have for an urban man and is perfect to make a statement about your persona. Style is one of the most important aspects of a man’s persona. The popular colours in men suits are black, navy blue, slate gray and taupe. Sudhir Diwan, MD, Diwan Saheb

If you have an athletic body, then… • Pick anything with a slim tagging and it will suit you. Slim is the flavour of the season.

Fashion fundamentals Always match your belt with your shoes: Follow this long-standing custom in formal fashion to keep things simple. Stick to traditional colours such as black, dark brown or rich brown.

Matching ties and shirts: Diagonal striped ties on solid shirts and solid ties on striped shirt complement each other. A solid tie should match the darkest colour in stripes of the shirt. The lightest colour in tie should match the shirt in case of a striped tie on solid shirt.

Socks: The official rule on wearing socks is that they should match the colour of the trousers, though preferably not exactly the same shade. A tone darker is always better than a tone lighter. White socks should be reserved only for the gym.

Watches: Black band watch with black shoes and belt; brown band with brown shoes and belt; metal chain bands with lustrous suits, such as silver with black; grey with navy, while rose gold chain is suitable with brown and beige.

Sunglasses: The sunglasses should be chosen to suit your face, which can be round, square, oval, heart or diamond shaped.

ainy season is the time when the weather brings respite from heat but the high percentage of humidity comes with various challenges for the skin. The accumulated sweat, which fails to evaporate, clogs the skin pores and excessive moisture favours microbial proliferation. Fungal and bacterial infections are quite frequent during this time of the year. Here are a few health tips, which will surely enhance your looks during the monsoons:

Use a cucumber based toner to wash your face every time.

Pay special attention to facial skin as it gets prone to acne. Use a mild, pH balanced face wash, which is meant for oily or acne prone skin. A face wash containing herbs like aloe vera, neem, lemon oil, turmeric or sandalwood, works best for your tender facial skin.

recommended as it offers a better cleansing action.

with. Use a facial scrubber to remove accumulated dead skin cells effectively.

• Use an antibacterial cleansing soap to stay away from germs and body odour. A neem based herbal soap is equally beneficial.

• Wear minimal makeup that is light and oil free. Remove it with a suitable cleanser or face wash, before bedtime.

• Use talcum powder on skin creases, like arm pits and groin, to keep the fungus and body odour away.

• Do not forget to apply sunscreen as sun protection, which is a must, even if it is not too hot. The damaging UVA and UVB rays still manage to harm the skin.

• Exfoliation is a must to remove dead skin cells, so that your skin remains fresh and vibrant. Use a natural scrub containing wheat bran, rice bran, amaranth seed powder or walnut shell powder to take care of your radiance.

• An oily scalp may also make your facial skin look dull and lifeless. Thus, shampoo your hair as often as required. Remember, hair is the framework of your face. If they are kept neat, your face will glow with charm.

• Feet must not be neglected during rains. Keep them clean and dry; wear airy footwear. Use talcum powder to keep them dry and odour free. Fungal infection of toes and nail beds is to be prevented at all costs, as it is really difficult to deal

Needless to say, always carry an umbrella while venturing out, so as to give special protection to your hair and skin and to save you from getting viral infection. Remain healthy and keep your skin glowing.

Wear loose fitting cotton clothes and discard tights, skin fitting jeans and synthetic clothes.

Take light and easily digestible, short and frequent meals during this season. Add fresh citrus fruits and lemon water in your daily intake. According to ancient ayurvedic wisdom, this is the time of pitta samchaya (accumulation) and vata prakopa (aggression). In order to stay away from indigestion and related disorders, eat home cooked meals with minimal spices, oil or ghee, to remain healthy and glowing.

Rajesh Khanna: The first superstar of Hindi cinema set new fashion trends during his heydays. He wore round collar short guru kurtas and belt on shirts to create a raved about trend in the seventies and eighties. His gentle looks, charming smile and that famous tilt of the head titillated this fashion. It was his charismatic style that encouraged the BBC to make a film on him and a textbook prescribed by the Bombay University even contained an essay on him.

BOLLYWOOD FASHION ICONS OF YESTERYEARS Today when most Bollywood stars are dependent on fashion designers, luxury fashion brands or fashion stylists to flaunt a style statement, the actors of yesteryears created and flourished with their own fashion acumen… Jeetendra: The ‘jumping jack’ was known more for his obsessive passion and penchant for everything white, from headgear to footwear.
